‘Augmenting’ the doctoral thesis in preparation for a viva

The viva voce exam is the final hurdle for PhD students, but for most it is also a new and fear-inducing experience. Edward Mills offers one framework to help those preparing to discuss their completed thesis at length

Using non verbal cues to build rapport with students, emotionally challenging research and researcher well-being, augmenting the doctoral thesis in preparation for a viva, how hard can it be testing ai detection tools.

In many ways, my own PhD viva voce examination was shaped by when and where it took place. Because I was examined at a UK institution, mine was not a public event; it was held virtually, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic; and, perhaps most depressingly, I didn’t get to wield a sword at the subsequent graduation ceremony (although my fiancée did make me a small wooden one).

Many parts of the viva, though, will be familiar to PhD candidates the world over from almost any discipline. After working independently for four years to produce an 80,000-word thesis, I was suddenly expected to discuss my work in depth, with two examiners (one from my institution, and one from elsewhere) and an independent chair present. During that time, the examiners would be checking whether my thesis was indeed my own work, and whether it met the criteria for the award of a PhD.

Understanding the ‘whole thesis’

Like many PhD students, I’d spoken about my research over the previous three years at conferences, but these presentations had largely been confined to individual chapters. Now, though, I had to become familiar not just with (say) my arguments on medieval calendars, but also on how they fitted into my broader narrative about language use in medieval England.

The approach that I took – which formed part of a suite of resources for postgraduate researchers produced by the University of Exeter’s Doctoral College – was based around what I called “augmenting” my thesis. Intimidating as this may sound, it was based around a fundamentally simple concept: turning my thesis from a lengthy PDF file into something physical and tangible and which would be of use to me during the viva.

There is, of course, no single “right way” to do this, but for the sake of clarity, and at the risk of sounding like a 1980s Blue Peter presenter , I’ll outline my own process in a series of numbered steps for the benefit of readers who may be approaching the viva themselves.

  • Resource collection: Resources on academic writing
  • Viving la viva: how to answer viva questions
  • How to write a PhD thesis: a step-by-step guide

An ‘augmented’ thesis in four steps

Print out and bind your thesis. This would form the basis of the “object” that I would eventually take into my viva, but it also has the advantage of getting you away from a screen, making you less likely to skip over certain passages as you reread it.

As you reread, place sticky markers along the top of the thesis to coincide with chapter headings and subheadings. At each point, write a one-sentence summary of that section. These big-picture notes give a bite-sized summary of your argument in each section, and when strung together, they provide you with a sort of “thesis-on-a-page”.

When you’ve reminded yourself of how all of your arguments fit together, start to look for points of detail. This is where highlighting can be at its most useful, if done selectively: I used yellow for material that I thought was central to my argument (and that I wanted to be able to quote back to my examiners) and red for material that I felt, on reflection, would benefit from further explanation. Any sticky notes can be placed along the outer margins of the thesis, which will distinguish them from the summaries along the top.

Record typos separately. However hard you try, typographical errors will find a way into the thesis that you submit. Highlighting each individual one, however, is likely to take more time than it’s worth: instead, I’d advise making a list of typos, keyed to page numbers and suggested changes, separately: this could later form the basis of a table of corrections to be submitted to the examiners.

There are, of course, plenty of other ways in which a thesis might be augmented: one of the main themes that emerged from collaborating on Researcher Development was that doctoral research is shaped by the researcher and their own experience just as much by field and topic. A PhD thesis may have a completely different structure to the one alluded to above; it may require more or less context for an oral examination; it may (whisper it) have fewer typos than mine did. Nevertheless, finding some form of structure in the isolating and stressful months and weeks prior to the viva is an absolute necessity for doctoral researchers, and producing an augmented thesis might just be the way to achieve it.

Giants OTA No. 9 Report: A Thought About the O-Line, No Word from Waller, and More

Patricia traina | jun 6, 2024.

New York Giants Practice

  • New York Giants

When New York Giants offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo spoke to the media last week, he was asked by yours truly if he had a certain cutoff date in mind regarding when he wanted the offensive line set.

“I'd like to think by the time you come out of your last preseason game, you pretty much know who your starting five are going to be,” he said.

“I don't fret this time of year. I jumble the starting groups, the vet group as I call it, and then everybody else and how we go through it.

“But I'd say for me, as we get later in the training camp, if we're not really set, you'll, you might see me a little worried, but until then, I'm not stressing at all.”

I mention this because two of Bricillo’s pupils have been limited this off-season, and both play the same position: offensive tackle.

The first is Evan Neal, who is recovering from season-ending ankle surgery. Whereas Neal was able to do some work in OTAs 3 and 5 (both of which were open to the media), he was on the side for OTA 9, which raised an eyebrow or two, considering he’s at least been able to go through warm-ups and work against air during installs.

It doesn’t need to be said that this is a big year for the seventh overall pick in the 2022 draft. Neal has dealt with injuries in his first two seasons, and he’s also struggled to find a true comfort level at right tackle, a position he played one season during his time at Alabama.

What’s more, this time on the field, Neal appears to be missing—and to be fair, it’s unknown what he’s been able to do during the practices that have been closed to the media, though it wouldn’t be a surprise if it’s been the same as what the media has seen—are valuable teaching reps not just at tackle but also any cross-training at guard that Bricillo might have planned for Neal.

Simply put, this potentially means Neal will be behind for the start of training camp next month, and that’s a concern, considering the Giants are counting on him to be their starting right tackle.

The other concern involves Matt Nelson, the former Lions offensive lineman projected to be the team's swing tackle. Nelson has also been sidelined this spring, the reason for which is unknown.

However, as is the case with Neal, Nelson is missing some valuable reps and hands-on instruction from Bricillo regarding hand placement, footwork, and other technique tweaks that he might want from his players.

No one from the Giants has expressed any concerns about Neal, Nelson, or any of the injured players from last year not being fully ready to go for training camp, but this is a standard boilerplate sentiment we hear every year, given that it’s easier to be optimistic despite not knowing what the future will bring.

The point of concern is that the more snaps these players miss in what has been a “teaching camp,” as Daboll described it at the start of the spring, the more of a concern that these guys will be behind come training camp when they’re expected to hit the ground running.

The Adult in the Room

Giants head coach Brian Daboll has better things to do than to engage in a childish war or words with Nick Sirianni, his contemporary with the Philadelphia Eagles.

For those who missed it, two days ago, Sirianni told the story of how he responds when Giants fans he occasionally runs into get under his skin .

“You know, we got your best player," he said, referring to running back Saquon Barkley, whom the Giants signed in free agency after the Giants decided not to extend a contract offer to the running back this past off-season nor use the franchise tag on him a second time.

Barkley, who grew up in the Philadelphia area and attended college at Penn State, signed a three-year, $37.75 million contract with the Eagles. The Giants, meanwhile, pivoted to a sturdier and less expensive option in Devin Singletary to lead their running back committee this season.

Before that, Barkley, the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, recorded 5,211 regular season rushing yards on 1,201 carries, his rushing yardage including three 1,000-yard seasons.

But Barkley, who has been something of a feast or famine back when healthy, has also struggled to stay on the field.

He missed 14 games in 2020 after tearing his ACL on the grass field in Chicago’s Soldier Field, and he’s been inactive 11 other times due to injuries, including three games last season due to a high ankle sprain suffered at the end of the team’s Week 2 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

This isn’t the first time Sirianni, whose “best player” statement could be taken as a slight to defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence II, left tackle Andrew Thomas, and inside linebacker Bobby Okereke, has trolled the Giants.

Brian Daboll was asked about Nick Sirianni's comments about the Giants: "I love Giants fans." pic.twitter.com/kh7KfCHUVW — Giants Videos (@SNYGiants) June 6, 2024

He was caught on camera nodding his head up and down as the Eagles took apart the Giants in the 2022 divisional playoff rounds, an act that drew the ire of Giants fans and players alike.

When asked about Sirianni’s latest shot at Giants fans, Daboll said, “I love Giants fans.”

When asked a follow-up question, Daboll repeated his answer. And when asked if he felt the Eagles did get the Giants’ best player, Daboll said, “Look, I’m focused on OTAs. I’m focused on our football team--go out there and have a good practice.”

No Decision Yet from Waller

For those hoping that tight end Darren Waller would finally announce his retirement after months of reflection away from his teammates, everyone will have to wait a little longer for a puff of white smoke to come.

According to head coach Brian Daboll, Waller has still not communicated his intentions about his football future. And as far as Daboll is concerned, there’s no rush or pressure for the eight-year tight end to do so.

The Giants are giving Darren Waller all the space he needs to sort out his future.

"We'll give him his time, and when he makes his decision, he makes his decision," Daboll said.

Waller has been contemplating his football future since the end of last season, ironically around the time he started ramping up his music career.

He’s already released new music videos, including one that captures the pain he’s experienced since his marriage to WNBA star Kelsey Plum fell apart.

The expectation remains that Waller will indeed call it a career. During a round of promotional interviews in April in support of Icy Hot , Waller said he hoped to decide by mid-June, which would put that timing around next week’s mandatory minicamp.

Speaking of the mandatory minicamp, all players under contract are required to attend, and those who don't are subject to being fined unless the head coach and/or general manager excuses them.

Status Quo for Daniel Jones

Quarterback Daniel Jones continues to make progress in his rehab from a torn ACL, but he’s still not yet at the point where he’s cleared to do 11-on-11 work.

Daniel Jones gets some work in at Giants practice pic.twitter.com/MRgalKKgS0 — Giants Videos (@SNYGiants) June 6, 2024

“He's still making progress,” Daboll said before practice, adding that Jones would continue to work in 7-on-7 drills. “That's been the plan all along. We’ll assess after this week. But he's coming along, making progress.”

Jones, who looked sharp in 7-on-7 red-zone drills, connecting with  Jalin Hyatt Wan’Dale Robinson and Malike Nabers for touchdowns,  is no doubt champing at the bit to get into some 11-on-11 drills. Who could blame him with newcomers like Nabers, running backs Tyrone Tracy Jr and Devin Singletary, and tight end Theo Johnson?

But a balance must be struck here despite how good Jones might be looking running around out there.

Simply put, the Giants would be foolish to rush Jones into full 11-on-11 drills right now. To do so would be taking a risk that something will happen to create a setback in his recovery.

If he were to have a setback, the Giants would all but certainly be on the hook for his injury guarantee, which kicks in next off-season, if he is unable to pass a physical.

This is why it should not come as a surprise if the Giants are extra judicious with Jones’s 11-on-11 reps and why they will likely hold him out of preseason games this summer.

Other Notes

Receiver/punt returner Gunner Olszewski, who appeared to injure his foot or ankle last week, is likely done for the rest of the spring but should be ready for training camp next month.

“It wasn't over the top,” Daboll said of Olszewski’s injury. “He'll be good for training camp.”

Pass rusher Brian Burns was among those not spotted at the voluntary practice. Inside linebacker Micah McFadden was sidelined with an undisclosed ailment. Carter Coughlin took his place in the lineup.

Receiver Malik Nabers put on a show, snagging two deep balls for touchdowns, including a highlight reel catch on a ball Drew Lock threw on the move. Nabers not only snagged the ball, he also managed to stay in bounds for the score.

“Post more Malik Nabers content!!!” pic.twitter.com/bsCHPtKmDM — New York Giants (@Giants) June 6, 2024

Cornerback Aaron Robinson, another player in a make-or-break year, was on the side with trainers. Robinson was on PUP  all of last season as he continued his rehab from a  torn ACL suffered the year prior and seemed to be forgotten.

Robinson's continued struggles to get on the field don’t bode well for his chances of making the roster this summer. It’s fair to wonder how far behind he might be in his development and whether there is a realistic chance of him catching up.

Pat Sajak's 6-Word Tweet Says It All About 'Wheel of Fortune' Retirement

After more than 40 years as the iconic host of Wheel of Fortune , Pat Sajak signed off the beloved game show for the final time on Friday, June 7.

Sajak — who has helmed the Wheel since 1981 — posted one final message to his followers on Friday, the day his last episode aired.

"Thank you all so very much," the veteran game show host, 74, wrote via X (formerly known as Twitter ).

Commenters came out in droves, thanking Sajak with heartfelt praise and emulating his dry sense of humor.

"Before you go Pat @patsajak I would like to buy a vowel please… D_n't G_ ," one person tweeted. "Congratulations, enjoy your retirement and thank you."

"Are you offering a clearance sale on vowels?" another asked.

Countless fans offered up their own memories in response to Sajak's tweet.

Pat Sajak

"Thank you for good memories of my mom and grandma. I hear this echo in many comments here. Although you don't know the people or the feelings attached in specifics, we treasure our time spent with family in those simpler times with you being the magnet that drew us together," one X user reminisced.

Sajak addressed viewers in his last episode just before his own final spin.

"Well, the time has come to say goodbye," he shared. "It's been an incredible privilege to be invited into millions of homes night after night, year after year, decade after decade. And I've always felt that privilege came with the responsibility to keep this daily half-hour a safe place for family fun. No social issues, no politics, nothing embarrassing, I hope. Just a game."

Wheel of Fortune , he described, was a place "where families came together along with friends and neighbors and entire generations," Sajak noted. "What an honor to have played even a small part in all of that. Thank you for allowing me into your lives."

Ryan Seacrest will take over as the host of Wheel of Fortune , while Sajak's longtime Wheel partner, Vanna White, will continue to man the puzzle board for at least the next two years.

How to Add Footnotes in Word? [For Students]

Being a student can be tough. They say it’s one of the best days of your life, but with all the assignments and thesis work, it can definitely take the fun out of it. To excel as a student, you need to ensure you submit your best work. That means your essays need to be convincing, with all the right citations placed correctly. In this article, I’ll show you  how to add footnotes in Word for students so you can properly cite your sources.

Footnotes in APA, MLA and Chicago Format

You haven't truly completed the format if you haven't added the citations and footnotes in the right way. Citations are a crucial component of academic writing, ensuring you give proper credit to sources and maintain scholarly integrity. Each citation style—APA, MLA, and Chicago—has its own specific rules for citing sources and adding footnotes. This can get complicated, especially when you're trying to meet tight deadlines or juggle multiple assignments. Here's what proper citation and footnote placement looks like when you are aiming to meet your academic standards:

APA format:

In APA format, footnotes are used by inserting superscript numbers in the text that correspond to the footnote numbers. Here's how to format footnotes:

Double-space footnotes.

Indent the first line.

Add a space between the superscript number and the note text.

For example, in a research paper, you might cite a book like this:

Antony Grafton, The Footnote: A Curious History (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1999), 221.

And a chapter from a book might be cited like this:

W. Jones and R. Smith, 2010, Photojournalism, 21, p. 122. (Copyright 2007 by Copyright Holder. Reprinted with permission.)

These footnotes include detailed citations, including author names, book titles, publication years, and page numbers.

MLA format:

In MLA format, footnotes are used for citing sources within the text. Here's how to format footnotes:

Place superscript numbers within the text to correspond with the footnote numbers.

Include detailed citation information in the footnote.

Single-space entries, with double-spacing between footnotes.

Chicago Format:

In Chicago style, footnotes are used for citing sources within the text. Here's how to format footnotes:

Separate multiple citations with semicolons.

Ensure consistency in citation style throughout the document.

How to Add Footnotes in Your Essay?

Adding footnotes correctly is incredibly important for academic writing, allowing you to reference sources and add explanations or additional information. To ensure you do this right, follow the steps below, designed to be compatible with various devices. To make sure you can follow along on your mobile, Windows, or Mac, I'll use WPS Office for the demo. It's a free office software that's compatible with all Word document versions and can even convert your papers to PDF without losing format.

1.On the References tab

As we move forward in this tutorial, let's address a common query students encounter when working on projects under strict professorial guidelines: how to add footnotes and endnotes in a Word document. Word simplifies this process. By navigating to the "Reference" tab, you can effortlessly insert footnotes and endnotes in your document.

Step 1: Let's launch WPS Writer, a simplified yet advanced writing software, and open our project where we need to insert footnotes.

Step 2: Now, within our document, place the cursor where you want to add the footnote.

Step 3: Next, the option to insert a footnote is located in the "Reference" tab. So, navigate to the Reference tab and click on "Insert Footnote" in the reference ribbon.

Step 4: A subscript will be added next to the text where you placed the cursor, and you will be directed to the bottom of the page where the footnote will appear.

That's how easily footnotes can be added in WPS Writer for your school projects. Another significant reason for using WPS Writer was its user-friendly interface, making it easy for me as a student. Additionally, it is budget-friendly while providing all the necessary tools.

2.Footnotes formatting

Probably the most important thing to keep in mind is the style requested by the instructor to follow: APA, MLA, or any other. Different styles entail different formatting. In this part, I'll show you how to add footnotes in APA style formatting. So, let's open WPS Writer and delve into formatting our footnotes.

Step 1: The first thing to remember is proper footnote referencing; ensure to follow the citation format when adding it to the footnote.

Step 2: To change the numbering format or starting position of your footnotes, right-click on your footnotes and select "Footnote/Endnote" from the context menu.

Step 3: In the Footnote and Endnote dialog box, select the numbering format according to the style in the "Number Format" field.

Step 4: Using the "Start at" field, you can start numbering your footnotes as desired.

Step 5: In APA style, our footnotes should be double-spaced. So, let's select our footnotes and navigate to the Home tab.

Step 6: In the Home ribbon, click on the "Line Spacing" icon and select "2.0" to change the line spacing to double.

With these easy steps, you'll be creating well-structured and formatted footnotes in no time. WPS Writer lets you concentrate on your writing and leaves the technicalities to the software. With a simple and clean interface and powerful tools that support all student needs, WPS Writer is my preferred choice for my writing needs. What to Know About the Alleged Trump 'N-Word Tape'

One of the producers of "the apprentice" published an exposé in slate containing several allegations about the former president., published may 30, 2024.

On May 30, 2024, Slate magazine published an article by Bill Pruitt, a former producer of "The Apprentice," the early 2000s reality TV show that brought future U.S. President Donald Trump back into the public sphere of attention. In the piece, Pruitt alleged that much of the show, which he emphasized was produced as entertainment, "played fast and loose with the facts, particularly regarding Trump," and that he could speak now about what he observed because a 20-year nondisclosure agreement had ended.

Pruitt's biggest allegation against Trump came at the end of the piece. According to Pruitt, during a recorded discussion about two finalist candidates late in the first season of "The Apprentice," Trump called one of the candidates, who is Black, the N-word.

The quote, as it appears in the article, was as follows: "'Yeah,' he says to no one in particular, 'but, I mean, would America buy a n— winning?'"

Pruitt noted earlier in the piece that the quotes were paraphrased and not verbatim, so Snopes reached out to Slate to ask about its fact-checking process and how much of the information in Pruitt's article was independently confirmed before publishing. We will update this story if we receive a response.

In the meantime, many  reliable media outlets began running the story, all based on information in the Slate article

Jasmine Harris, director of Black media for President Joe Biden's campaign, released a statement on behalf of the Biden-Harris campaign condemning Trump:

No one is surprised that Donald Trump, who entered public life by falsely accusing Black men of murder and entered political life spreading lies about the first Black president, reportedly used the N-word to casually denigrate a successful Black man.

Trump campaign spokesman  Steven Cheung called the allegations "completely fabricated":

This is a completely fabricated and bulls*** story that was already peddled in 2016. Nobody took it seriously then, and they won't now, because it's fake news. Now that Crooked Joe Biden and the Democrats are losing the election, they are bringing up old fake stories from the past because they are desperate."

The rumors certainly predate 2024 — the claim did pop up during Trump's 2016 presidential run, as  Cheung implied.

A New Yorker profile from 2018 about a different "Apprentice" producer, Mark Burnett, waffled on it. Some paragraphs discussed people saying the comments and tape were real. Other paragraphs suggested the opposite. In a 2020 MSNBC interview, Trump's niece Mary Trump claimed that she had heard her uncle use racist and antisemitic slurs.

As far as we could tell, the only time Trump himself ever publicly addressed the rumors was in a 2018 tweet , when he denied them in a roundabout way ("Omarosa" here refers to  Omarosa Manigault Newman , a former "Apprentice" contestant and Trump aide who also alleged he used the N-word):

.@MarkBurnettTV called to say that there are NO TAPES of the Apprentice where I used such a terrible and disgusting word as attributed by Wacky and Deranged Omarosa.

The rumored tape has never surfaced. In his article, Pruitt wrote that he suspected it never will.
