How to Homeschool an 11 Year Old

Are you homeschooling an 11 year old? This is an exciting time! Your child is probably wrapping up fifth grade and getting ready to go into middle school . • Step 2:  Research the various homeschool curricula available. Be sure to take into consideration your child’s learning style , the format (online or textbooks.), flexibility, features, etc.
• Step 3: Come up with a schedule for your homeschool. Will you homeschool four days a week or five? Will you do all subjects every day or split them up? The options are endless. Do what works best for your family and be flexible.

What should a 7-11 year old be doing.

Between the ages of seven and eleven, children typically undergo significant cognitive, social, and emotional development. This is a crucial stage for developing skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and understanding more complex concepts. Academically, they should be able to read more complex texts, write detailed sentences and paragraphs, and grasp more advanced mathematical concepts like multiplication, fractions, and basic geometry. Socially, they may begin to form stronger and more complex friendships, showing a better understanding of empathy and the concept of fairness. This is also the age range when they might start exploring their independence, while still needing guidance and support from adults. Emotional self-regulation also improves, and they can express their feelings more clearly and handle disappointments better.

1. Competitive Sports

At this age, children can participate in sports at a more competitive level. Encourage them to join a local sports team or league, where they can learn teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Sports like soccer, basketball, and swimming are popular options for this age group.

2. Advanced Arts and Crafts

If you're stuck inside and your kids are climbing the walls, but you aren't yet ready to let them watch Netflix from dawn to dusk, well, I don't blame you. Animal Jam is an online virtual world originally created in collaboration with the National Geographic Society. It teaches kids about zoology and ecology with games, adventures, and parties and online social elements. With 160 million registered users, this is one of the largest virtual worlds for kids. This is a great game that encourages spacial thinking and unique puzzle solving. Kids can pilot Toad through courses based on the Super Mario Odyssey game while hunting down treasures and solving puzzles.

This math-based role-playing game is free to play. Kids proceed through the game by answering skill-building math questions to earn rewards. There's an interactive element, too; they can go on quests with friends. The difficulty levels increase as your kids make progress in the game.

This physics puzzle game features rolling aliens that teach your kids about acceleration, buoyancy, gravity, and more. Like games of yesteryear, there are no ads, no in-app purchases, and it doesn't need an internet connection.

Ages 4 and Up ( Computer , iOS , Android )

Tinybop has dozens of learning-oriented apps and we've been fans for years . You can purchase them in bundles for iPhone or iPad (Android users there is one Tinybop bundle in the Play Store which has six games.) My kids love the Curiosity Kit ($16) , which includes apps about the human body, animal anatomy, and space. Tinybop is currently offering its Tinybop Schools subscription , which features ten science apps and classroom support, for free through the summer to help out parents and kids while schools are closed (no credit card required).

Ages 4 and Up ( iOS , Android )

Dragonbox games are primarily math-related, though they also partnered with chess champ Magnus Carlsen to create Magnus' Kingdom , a chess-learning game that's been very popular in my house. It uses an adventure-style approach to teach kids about different chess pieces and how to play. I strongly suggest picking up a real-world chess board (I like this no-stress chess board for beginners $18 ) as well. Your kids will ask for it. Trust me.

Ages 3 and Up ( Computer , iOS , Android )

It's time you let delightful animated monsters teach your kids everything from basic ABCs to complex sentences. It has puzzle games with talking letters and well-illustrated definitions to help your child learn to read. Originator, the publisher of Endless Alphabet , has many other games as well , including Endless Reader , which helps kids learn sight words, and Endless Spanish which helped my kids significantly improve their Spanish vocabulary.

This language, arts, and music learning site has dozens of games and activities to help your kids learn to read, add, subtract, and identify shapes.

PBS Kids has dozens of apps, many of them related to the shows on PBS Kids. If your kids like a particular show, they'll probably really engage with its related game, as well.

Free Homeschooling Resources in UK [For 11-16 year Olds]

If you have taken the decision to homeschool your child, you might be worrying about how much it will cost. While there are loads of great paid resources out there, there are also plenty of excellent free homeschooling resources too. Below are a range of options for UK children roughly 11-16 years old which equates to school years 7-11 ( Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 which is GCSE level).

The post is split into two sections, first are resources that are completely free and second are resources where there is a mix of free and paid content. Each of those sections is then separated into Key Stage 3 and GCSE level.

If you’re looking for free resources for younger children have a look at this post on homeschooling free resources for 5-11 year olds .

A note on language:  In my posts, I refer to “homeschooling”. In the UK, the correct term for educating your child at home is “home Educating”, with homeschooling referring to a child doing work at home that has been set by school. I use the the term homeschooling in my posts because many people who are new to home educating will use the term homeschooling when searching online and I want to make sure they can find the information.

Key Stage 3 (Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9) Free Homeschooling Resources

The resources in this section are available completely free with no limits on use.

BBC Bitesize at KS3

BBC Bitesize for Key Stage 3 offers a great range of free resources. Bitesize was originally designed for schooled children so the topics reflect that, covering all of the non practical subjects that would be studied at school in years 7-9.

They include:

• Science (as well as sections for the separate sciences, biology, chemistry and physics)
• Computer Science
• Religious Studies

They also include some content specific to Wales for Citizenship and Humanities.

The content is a mixture of written information to read, graphics to look at, short videos and quizzes to check understanding. A few topics also have games.

BBC Bitesize will suit learners who are happy to do a fair amount of reading as part of their learning.

BBC Teach at KS3

The difference between BBC Bitesize and BBC Teach is that while Bitesize is designed for learners to use at home, BBC teach is designed for teachers to use in the classroom. This means that the written content is less easy to read and layout is less child friendly.

Where BBC Teach does excel is video. There are a large range of video clips for lots of different subjects so while you probably wouldn’t be able to leave your child to work through BBC Teach on their own, it can be great source of resources if you as a parent have time to find them.

BBC Teach also covers some topics Bitesize doesn’t, here is a list of the subjects covered at KS3:

• English Language
• English Literature
• German Spanish
• Design and Technology
• Art and Design

Oak National Academy for KS3

Oak National Academy was set up by the Government during the pandemic to provide a way for children to learn at home. Some of the content has now been moved to a different website called Continuity Oak so if you click on a section in Oak National Academy and it is empty, try checking Continuity Oak.

For most subjects, Oak provides a video lesson of a teacher explaining the subject and setting work as they go along. Some also have worksheets and quizzes. Videos are usually short, 15-30 minutes, but many ask learners to pause to complete activities so they will likely take closer to an hour to complete.

At Key Stage 3 the following subjects are offered on Oak National Academy:

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is an American website that has a huge range of learning resources for lots of different subjects. The only difficulty is that being an American site, it doesn’t match up with the UK National Curriculum.

If you have chosen not to follow the National Curriculum (not having to being one of the benefits of homeschooling ) and are just looking for good learning resources, Khan Academy is a great option. If you are following the National Curriculum, you can still use Khan Academy, it will just take a bit more work to find the things you need.

When judging the level of work on Khan Academy, it is useful to know that in terms of age, Grade 1 equates to the England’s Year 2, Grade 2 equates to England’s Year 3 and so on. This means that for Key Stage 3, you’re looking at grades 6 – 8.

Khan Academy mostly covers Maths, English and Science with a some Humanities and Economics content.

GCSE Level (Year 10 and Year 11) Free Homeschooling Resources

If you are studying for GCSEs (Key Stage 4), here are some completely free resources you can use.

BBC Bitesize at GCSE

Bitesize for GCSEs covers a range of exam boards however, if your child is taking IGCSEs (which many homeschoolers do to avoid practical elements and coursework, one of the disadvantages of homeschooling ) they may not have the exact syllabus you need.

For many subjects there is a degree of crossover so you may still find relevant resources, you’ll just need to check your syllabus first and see if Bitesize offers anything relevant. The exam boards vary for each subject so you’ll need to visit the page, click on the subject you are interested in and then you’ll see a list of exam boards.

At GCSE level, Bitesize covers the following subjects:

• Combined Science
• Music and PE

There are also some subjects specific to Wales and Ireland.

BBC Teach for GCSE Level Work

Unlike Bitesize, BBC Teach doesn’t provide resources specific to a particular exam board so it is a case of looking to see if it has anything on the topic you want to cover. As at Key Stage 3, there are some great video clips and while it is still quite wordy, its more likely a learner at Key Stage 4 would be able to read through the information provided alone.

The following subjects are covered:

• Media Studies

Oak National Academy for GCSE Work

As noted in the Key Stage 3 section, some of the resources from Oak National Academy have been moved to Continuity Oak . There are also some resources that are no longer available, the main subject that is impacted by this at GCSE level is modern foreign languages where much of the content has been removed.

The format for KS4 work on Oak National Academy is the same as that for KS3, with video lessons along with quizzes and some worksheets.

The following subjects at GCSE can be found on Oak National Academy:

• French (parts missing)
• Spanish (parts missing
• German (parts missing)
• Religious Education

These subjects are available on Continuity Oak:

As a US website, Khan Academy doesn’t have content specifically tailored to GCSE but you may still be able to find some relevant content for Maths and Science which it covers up to High School Level. Bear in mind that in the US, High School covers up to age 18.

If you feel your child needs more support than free resources can offer, have a look at this list of online GCSE course providers .

Key Stage 3 Homeschooling Resources with Free Elements

The resources below are useful for years 7, 8 and 9 (roughly ages 11-14) and while you have to pay for full access, they all offer some access for free.

Free EdPlace Resources for 11-14 Year Olds

EdPlace is essentially a revision site so while it won’t teach your learner any new material, it can be a great way of testing current knowledge and practicing skills.

EdPlace is aligned to the National Curriculum so useful if your intention is to follow it. It covers Maths, English and Science.

With a free account your child can do up to 5 activities a month. While this isn’t a great deal it can add variety to your schedule, which is how we have used it. What is really useful is, as a parent, you can preview as many activities as you want to help you decide which 5 activities will most benefit your child.

Free IXL Resources for Years 7, 8 and 9

Like EdPlace, IXL is a revision site and aligned to the National Curriculum. For free use you are limited to 10 questions a day and then it will cut you off. You don’t need an account to do the 10 free questions, you just find the work you want to do and get on with it.

The downsides are that you can’t preview work to help you decide what your child should do and because you don’t have an account if you’re using it for free, you can keep track of what has been done. Like EdPlace, it’s useful if you want to mix things up a bit.

Free Seneca Resources for Key Stage 3

Seneca has a mix of free and premium resources available. The majority of the free resources for Key Stage 3 relate to English with a few on Maths, Sciences and Humanities. There are a lot more on those subjects if you pay for premium.

You can set up a free account for yourself as a parent and one for you child and then link them. You can then keep track of completed work. Seneca is a good option for English as it offers more at KS3 than Edplace or IXL.

Finding Free Twinkl Resources for 11-14 year Olds

While many of the resources on Twinkl require you to have a subscription, there are still a good number that you can access without paying, you just need to sign up for a free account.

The easiest way to find relevant resources is to click on the 11-16 option at the top of the homepage and then select the subject that you want at KS3. You can then use of the filter on the lefthand menu to limit it to free resources.

The other option is to put “Free Resources” into the search box and then filter the results by age. This isn’t foolproof however and will still bring up some results that need a subscription, usually because they have the word “free” in the resource name or description.

While Twinkl has lots of great resource, the main problem I have encountered as a home educator is that, because they are originally designed for teachers, answers aren’t included. While this wasn’t a problem in the younger years, it has proved to be one at secondary school age.

Twinkl also has a new section called “Beyond” dedicated to secondary school resources but they only offer a sample pack for those with the free account.

It is also worth noting that the Beyond sample pack is pretty much the only Twinkl free resource available for GCSE level.

GCSE Homeschooling Resources with Free Elements

These resources all offer some free GCSE level content.

Free EdPlace for GCSEs

EdPlace is designed to be a revision tool so is great for practicing GCSE work. At GCSE EdPlace offers English Literature, English Language, Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Like Bitesize, each subject is separated by exam board so if you are doing IGCSEs you may need to dig around a bit to find the topics you need.

The free account can give you a way to track what’s being done and you could also give your child access to your parent account to allow them to explore resources before deciding what would be best for them to practice.

Free IXL GCSE Resources

IXL covers GCSE level English and Maths and has a large number of topics within each. They are not linked to specific exam boards which may actually make it easier to find the topic you are after.

You’re still limited to 10 questions a day but it could add some variety to revision.

Seneca Free Resources for GCSEs

As with the years 7, 8 and 9 work, a lot of Seneca’s content at GCSE level is focussed on English however there is more on other subjects at GCSE than KS3. There is a fair amount of Science and Maths as well as some other subjects.

Much of what is there is tailored to a specific exam board and you can filter by subject and exam board to find what you need.

Hello. Im thinking of taking my child out of school education. She struggles so much socially and the environment isnt a happy one for her. She currently has an EHCP, which im pretty sure doesnt have an effect if out of a school environment. She is currently in year 10. She struggles with subjects as processing information is hard for her but she’s definitely improved over the high school years. I think home schooling may help her as there are no distractions of other children being mean or disruptive behaviour in class which will help her concentrate. If we go ahead with this she would need only do the basics. English language, maths and science. I feel that would be enough for her to study. She enjoys reading so thats not a problem and she can work on her own pretty independently. Im interested in the free classes but interested to know the cost of what it would be as an ongoing cost. College isnt for heidi so can she continue the subjects for years 12 and 13 too? Many thanks Helen Ecott

83 years later, 105-year-old finally earns master's from Stanford

Virginia Hislop has spent a lifetime trying to increase access to education, and now, at 105 years old, she appears to have completed her own schooling.

On Sunday, Hislop celebrated Stanford University's conference of a master of art's degree in education — 83 years after having left campus just shy of the degree. Her son-in-law had contacted the institution and discovered a final thesis, her unfulfilled obligation, was no longer required.

“I’ve been doing this work for years and it’s nice to be recognized with this degree,” Hislop told Stanford for a story about her nearly lifelong journey to a stage on campus , where a diploma in a Cardinal-red cover was placed in her hand.

In 1941, on the eve of the United States' direct involvement in World War II, and as her fiance was preparing to be called to serve, Hislop skipped out on the thesis.

Her Stanford days, starting in 1936, were nonetheless fruitful, and she earned an undergraduate education degree before moving directly to postgraduate studies.

She wanted to go to law school, Hislop has said, but her father wouldn't pay for it, so she opted for the briefer time required for teaching.

Hislop had completed coursework for a master's and needed only to turn in the final version of her thesis, she has said. Instead, she told NBC Bay Area, she skipped town and had a honeymoon in Oklahoma near her husband's Army post at Fort Sill.

"Not my idea of a place for a honeymoon," she told the station, "but I had no choice in the matter."

At the time, such a sacrifice — trading her career for marriage and a future family — was seen as a way to support the war effort. It was a sacrifice for America.

She had grown up in Los Angeles, but after the war the California girl found herself with husband George in Yakima, Washington, where George took part in the family business of ranching.

They raised two children, which put Hislop's focus on a passion stoked during her days in Palo Alto: education.

"I didn’t return to teaching, but I feel I put my teaching certificate to good use serving in committees and on boards and trying to improve the educational opportunities every chance I got," she told the Yakima Herald-Republic in 2018.

She opposed middle school curricula that required home economics but not advanced English for her daughter, so she ran for the Yakima School District Board of Directors and won, according to the publication.

Hislop also successfully lobbied for independent community college districts in Washington state at a time when Yakima's two-year college was under the otherwise K-12 district.

She was eventually recruited to raise funds for what would become Heritage University, a women-founded, women-led institution about 20 miles south of Yakima.

She launched the school's annual Bounty of the Valley Scholarship Dinner, which by 2018 had raised nearly $6 million to help students attend the institution. Hislop is listed by the school as a board member emerita.

At Pacific Northwest University, a medical and health sciences school in Yakima, a scholarship, the Virginia Hislop Emergency Fund , bares her name.

Her interest in broad access to education may have been inspired by an aunt who was the principal of a public school in West Los Angeles' Sawtelle Japantown neighborhood when Hislop grew up in L.A.

Sawtelle is an area originally anchored by a housing and care facility for disabled veterans of the Civil War, but it evolved into a community populated by Japanese Americans and Latinos.

Hislop said she was moved by her aunt’s experience seeing education change lives on L.A.’s Westside, according to the Yakima Herald-Republic.

“Aunt Nora would tell us about some of the Hispanic students in her school and how they were doing and the difference that education made for them,” she told the publication. “It seemed to me that without an education, your future was limited and with an education it was unlimited.”

Her new degree is punctuation for a life spent advocating for public education for the masses.

On Sunday, Daniel Schwartz, dean of Stanford’s Graduate School of Education, handed Hislop her master’s diploma with a broad smile, describing her as “a fierce advocate for equity and the opportunity to learn."

Activities for 2-month-olds

Place your baby on their back and sing them a song. As you sing, tap the bottoms of their feet in time with the song. How your baby benefits: This game is great for developing listening skills. Your little one will delight at hearing your voice and the tapping adds a new way to experience singing songs together.

Face your baby, make eye contact, smile and talk to them when they make sounds. Take turns responding to their babbles and pause to give them time to respond. How your baby benefits: This back and forth helps your child to learn language and conversation skills – and they’ll love the attention they get from you! Making eye contact shows your baby that you want to communicate with them and helps support learning.

Reach, reach, reach!

Hold a toy or another baby-safe object, such as a cloth, and move it toward your baby’s hand, encouraging them to touch it. Make sure to switch sides so they get to reach with both of their hands. How your baby benefits: This simple game helps your baby to work on their fine motor skills by giving them a chance to practice opening and closing their fists.

Activities for 4-month-olds

Read and look at baby books together. Point to the objects, animals or plants on the pages and name them. How your baby benefits: Making time to read together promotes bonding, language skills and visual development.

Texture talk

Give your baby different fabrics to feel and use words to describe them such as “smooth” or “rough.” How your baby benefits: Giving your baby new sensory experiences helps them to develop their sense of touch and introducing new words helps to build their rapidly growing vocabulary.

Turn the switch

Let’s get rolling.

Place your baby on their back or tummy on a safe surface and place their favourite toy or another baby safe object just out of reach. Encourage them to roll over to reach for the toy. How your baby benefits: This game helps support your baby’s gross motor skill development by working on a big milestone like rolling over.

Go exploring

Take your baby for a walk outside and talk about the things you see and noises you hear. How your baby benefits: Going outdoors helps to expose your baby to new sights and sounds, helping them to develop their listening, visual and social skills.

Magical ride

Place your baby on their tummy on a towel or blanket on a soft surface free of any obstructions. Hold the corners and slowly move around the room, taking your baby on a fun, safe ride! How your baby benefits: This fun adventure helps your little one to strengthen their core and back muscles while also helping them to improve control of their head and neck.

Follow the leader

Activities for 1-year-olds

Hide and search.

Hide toys or other baby-safe objects under a towel or blanket while you play together. Encourage your little one to find it and help them if they need it by pulling it out and saying “here it is!”. How your baby benefits: This kind of play teaches your baby all about object permanence: Even if you can’t see it, it doesn’t mean it’s gone forever!

Words, words, words!

When your baby points to an object, respond by naming the object and talking about it. For example, if they point to a ball, you could say “Do you want your ball? Here is your ball! Let’s play with the ball!”. How your baby benefits: By naming things that your baby is interested in, you are helping them to learn new words. Paying attention to things they point to also teaches them that their needs matter and helps to build their self-esteem.

Water wonder

Place beads or marbles in a bottle or small container, fill it with water and seal it securely. Give it to your little one for them to shake and observe. How your baby benefits: This homemade toy helps your baby to practice their visual skills.

Activities for 18-month-olds

Walking buddy.

Encourage your toddler to walk with you in a safe space as soon as they are able. Go slowly to match their pace. How your child benefits: Your little one will feel more confident practicing their new skill with you by their side. It’s also a great way for you to enjoy getting exercise together!

Make believe

Encourage pretend play with a toy or another baby-safe object. For example, take turns rocking a teddy bear to sleep or grab a wooden spoon and use as a microphone. How your child benefits: This kind of play helps your child to learn empathy and practice social skills.

Grab a box, bucket or other container and ask your baby to put toys or other child-safe objects in and then take them out again. As they do so, use the words “in” and “out” to describe their actions. How your child benefits: All while having fun, your little one is working on developing their fine motor skills by grabbing objects and developing their communication skills by listening to directions.

Activities for 2-year-olds

Household helper.

Invite your toddler to help with age-appropriate tasks around the house such as sorting clothes or serving food. Try to turn it into a game and let them know that they’re a great helper! How your child benefits: Including your child in household activities helps to foster independence and build self-esteem by letting them know they’re a valued member of the family.

Budding artist

Create basic art projects with your toddler like drawings, finger paintings or arranging materials they find outside like shells or pebbles. After they’re finished, display it somewhere where your child can see it. How your child benefits: Letting your child’s imagination run wild through art helps to foster their creativity and independence.

Tower tumbler

Use blocks or other safely stackable objects to build a tower together and let your toddler knock it down! Teen shot in Fernwood neighborhood, Chicago police say

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A teen is recovering after being shot on Wednesday on the city's South Side, according to police.

The shooting happened around 11:45 p.m. in the 10000-block of Perry Avenue in the Fernwood neighborhood.

A 17-year-old boy was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the body.

He was originally taken to the hospital in critical condition, police later said he was listed in fair condition.

A witness told Chicago police officers that the shooters may have fled in a white SUV, police said.

There is no one in custody. CPD Area Two Detectives are investigating.

No other injuries were reported.

Life with a 5-year-old can be incredibly fun. For instance, a 5-year-old can still feel little and adorable, yet ask thoughtful questions that will seriously impress you.

Cuteness aside, the age of 5 isn’t without its ups and downs. For instance, they're learning how to regulate emotions and doing "big kid" things like going to school.

Here's what to expect in terms of growth and development in your 5-year-old , as well as some red flags that might warrant a call to your pediatrician.

5-Year-Old Language and Cognitive Milestones

Here are some of the cognitive milestones you may see in your 5-year-old:

• Language skills . Your child’s language skills are really exploding at this age. “Five-year-olds are fluent talkers,” says Molly O'Shea, MD , official pediatrician of  Goldfish Swim School . “They use pronouns correctly, recognize colors, and understand and use direction words like 'over,' 'under,' and 'next to.'”
• Remembering details . Dr. O’Shea says that children this age love to recount the things that happened to them during the day and can recall details from hours before.
• Following directions . They're also able to carry out more detailed directions, a skill that will help prepare them for kindergarten . “When following directions, 5-year-olds can usually carry out a three-step sequence such as, ‘Get your shoes, put on your jacket, and pack your backpack,’ with few reminders,” Dr. O’Shea describes.
• Learning new information . You will be wowed by how quickly your child is absorbing new information, says Tiffany Kimbrough, MD, associate professor and pediatrician at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU. “Five-year-olds are like sponges and are constantly learning,” Dr. Kimbrough explains. “They can count 10 or more items, can understand concepts like money, print letters and numbers, and copy shapes.”
• Knowing what's real vs. what's not. Although your child still enjoys playing imaginatively, they are better able to distinguish between imaginative play and real life, says Dr. O'Shea. “Fantasy vs. reality is getting clearer, but kids still struggle to understand what can really happen and what can’t,” she notes.

Language and Cognitive Checklist

A 5-year-old can:

• Have a vocabulary of about 2,000 words and speak in sentences with at least five words
• Recount things like their phone number, and the first and last names of their parents
• Answer simple questions
• Recognize rhymes like "hop" and "stop"
• Have speech more easily recognized by others
• Use the future tense when speaking (“I will go to school tomorrow”)

5-Year-Old Movement, Hand, and Finger Milestones

Here are some of the physical characteristics you might see in a typical developing 5-year-old.

Physical appearance

As your child moves from preschool age to school age, they're growing a bit more slowly, and their round cheeks and chunky thighs may start to lean out a bit.

Movement milestones

A 5-year-old's movements are becoming more synchronized and their hand-eye coordination is getting more refined.

“Five-year-olds have gotten a lot more coordinated and are ready for action,” Dr. O’Shea says. “ Gross motor skill development allows them to throw and catch smaller balls, run, jump and skip, and even do more complex movements like gymnastics and swimming real strokes.”

They should also be able to hop on one foot.

Fine motor skills

As for fine motor skills , your child should be able to do things like:

• Feed themselves easily
• Use a child-safe knife to do things like spread butter on bread
• Write their own name
• Dress themselves

“They should have established hand dominance and be exhibiting a mature pencil grasp called a dynamic tripod (or quadrupod) grasp,” explains Caitlin Sanschagrin, an occupational therapist at Bright SpOT Pediatric Therapy .

But all children are different, Sanschagrin adds, and you shouldn’t expect your child to have a “textbook” pencil grasp at this age. 

Physical Milestones Checklist

Your 5-year-old should be able to:

• Stand on one foot for about 10 seconds
• Be learning to climb, swing, and somersault
• Use the potty on their own
• Hop and sometimes, skip

5-Year-Old Emotional and Social Milestones

You may notice just how much fun it is to chat with your 5-year-old. Yes, they still say the cutest things, but they also have a lot of interesting thoughts and opinions to share.

“They are very capable of participating in conversations and may ask questions to gain information,” says Emily Rooker, a speech-language pathologist at Bright SpOT Pediatric Therapy.

Here are some additional social and emotional milestones you may notice at this age.

Expanding their circle of friends

Rooker explains that your 5-year-old is growing and maturing when it comes to making friends and engaging with people outside their immediate family. At this age, children more consciously make and choose friends on their own, Rooker says.

Learning to follow directions

They're also able to engage in play that involves directions, expectations, and cooperation, Rooker explains, which is another important prerequisite for the type of activities they will engage in once they begin elementary school.

A 5-year-old can also do simple chores , such as putting their plate and cup in the sink after a meal.

Testing boundaries

As much as your child can adhere to rules and become a team player, they're still very much capable of testing limits, especially with their parents.

Regressing in behavior—and even having the occasional meltdown—is typical at this age, and it’s important to remember that your child is young and still learning.

“It can be frustrating for parents to see children behaving ‘like babies’ in their eyes, but by acknowledging the feelings and supporting the child, their emotional capabilities will grow and the child will have more ways of handling tough situations,” Dr. O’Shea advises.

Other Milestones for Your 5-Year-Old

Here are a few other things that may happen as your 5-year-old continues to grow and develop:

• Losing baby teeth . Get your tooth fairy skills ready, because 5 years old is when most children start to lose their baby teeth . Starting at around age 5 or 6, your child’s mature sets of incisors (the middle bottom and middle top teeth) start to come in.
• Using the bathroom solo . At this age, your child should also be fully potty-trained, for both pee and poop. Most children this age can clean up after themselves in the bathroom as well.
• Occasional accidents . Don’t be surprised if your child still has accidents, though (that’s why their kindergarten teacher will have you send in an extra set of clothes). Kids this age still sometimes wet the bed.

How To Help Your 5-Year-Old Learn and Grow

As a parent, you may feel frustrated that your child still has occasional tantrums at 5 years old. This behavior is normal, says Dr. O’Shea, but there are some things you can do as a parent to help your child navigate these difficult feelings.

“Children will get upset,” she says. “When they do, parents can try hard to empathize rather than diminish their children’s feeling by saying things like ‘stop crying’ or ‘you’ll be fine.’”

Even though your instinct as a parent may be to try to make the behavior stop immediately, allowing children a chance to share their emotions is important. “By leaning into it with empathy, we give our children an opportunity to express their feelings and for us to help them come up with new ways to express themselves in the long run,” Dr. O’Shea adds.

Starting school

Of course, you can't discuss a 5-year-old without talking about the possibility of them starting school. This is natural because starting kindergarten or an early kindergarten is a major milestone for both you and your child.

Thankfully, although the adjustment to school can be bumpy, most children do fine in kindergarten—and yes, their parents learn to let go as well. But some children may need extra help and that's OK, too.

If you're concerned about your child’s ability to self-regulate their emotions, or if your child is showing lags in social skills or pre-reading and math skills, don’t hesitate to reach out to your pediatrician with your questions and concerns.

How To Keep Your 5-Year-Old Safe

Your child will have a well-child checkup at the pediatrician's office soon after they turn 5 years old. Here are some things you can expect at their check-up to keep them healthy:

• Immunizations . Their health care provider will make sure they're up to date with their childhood vaccines , especially the ones required for school. Immunizations typically offered at this age include additional doses of the DTaP vaccine, the polio vaccine, the chickenpox vaccine, and the MMR vaccine. Your child’s provider will likely offer the flu shot as well.
• Physical activity . Additionally, your child’s pediatrician will discuss the kinds of lifestyle choices that will keep your child healthy during this time. Five-year-olds need regular physical activity—at least one hour of movement a day.
• Sleep . They need to get adequate sleep as well, and many kids this age need to sleep between 11 and 13 hours each night.

When To Talk to Your Doctor About Your 5-Year-Old

Every child is different when it comes to reaching milestones, and this is especially true at age 5. Some children can read a little at this age, while others are still learning their letters. Some children are little gymnasts while others are still mastering catching a ball.

There's a wide range of normal, so don’t worry too much if your child has or hasn't mastered certain skills before others. Dr. Kimbrough does advise talking to your health care provider if your child exhibits any of the following symptoms:

• Can't say their first and last name
• Doesn't play with a variety of toys or play different games
• Doesn't respond to others
• Has extreme emotions ( anxious , shy , or overly fearful)
• Is unable to wash their own hands
• Cannot draw a picture
• Loses skills they once possessed

You can bring up your concerns with your pediatrician. If they agree that there may be an issue, they will be able to refer you to a specialist who can evaluate your child and connect them to resources and help they may need.
