Homework submission guidelines.

This semester you will use Gradescope to electronically submit, and receive feedback on, all  homework problems. Gradescope is intuitive and easy to use, and it works well on both desktop and mobile platforms.

Here are some Gradescope resources for you, all of which describe how students can upload their work to Gradescope for grading:

Our tips for turning in great homework:

• Follow the homework template attached to the course syllabus.
• We generally recommend that you upload a single PDF file for your homework (rather than a set of images), because you can control the scan parameters for your PDF file (to control file size). A black-and-white (rather than grayscale) scan is preferred.
• It's also really helpful if you start each new problem on a new page . It's a much cleaner division of your work, both on paper and in Gradescope.

CSE 341 -- Homework Submission Guidelines

Please read all of this information very carefully. If you have any questions, the earlier you ask, the better. These policies apply to all work submitted in this course unless otherwise noted on a specific assignment. The point of these policies is to ensure you get the credit you deserve for your work, getting it to the grader and back to you in a timely fashion, so please double-check them before you submit anything.

Work is due at the beginning of class on the posted due date. You are required to submit two identical copies your work: one copy via computer using the turnin program (notes below) and another as paper printouts in class.

Please make sure your full name , your CSE login , your section , and the assignment number appears at the top of each file you submit to ensure your printouts do not get lost. (See example below.) For code files, include this information in a comment header for each file.

Output showing code testing should show both how code is invoked and the resulting output in a plain text file. (See tips below.) Unless otherwise instructed, please put all output in one file with clear headings for separate functions or parts of the output.

For written work, try to use the most platform-independent, lightweight format possible. Plain text should be just fine for most of the written work in this course. (Emacs users, Meta-Q is your friend.)

See the man page for turnin for instructions on how to submit files via computer. (On an instructional host , run man turnin or read it on the web. )

To ensure readability, make sure to print both code and output using a fixed space font like Courier , rather than Times or Arial, where some characters (e.g., 'i') occupy less width than others (e.g., 'M'). You can do this by printing plain text files from UNIX using lpr or enscript , as described below or from Windows using Notepad.

Grading Criteria

Grading of code will primarily be based on these main criteria:

If your code satisfies all of the above requirements, you can expect to get a very good grade.

Capturing Output

You can copy and paste out of terminal windows after running your code. Unless you have multiple screens worth of output, this is the recommended and probably easiest method. If you use emacs, you can run your code from a shell started inside emacs (Meta-X shell), facilitating copying and pasting. Regardless of your choice of editor, you can also run a special shell whose trancript is saved in a file using the useful script program ( see man page ). With interpreted languages like Miranda, consider defining test functions and data so you don't have to type much to generate output. Finally, many interpreted languages support redirection of output or writing a session transcript to a file, so check your documentation.

Saving Paper

When printing from UNIX with lpr , cut paper use by as much as 50% by using the -Zduplex flag to print two-sided. Save another page by using -h flag to skip the header page and grab your printout right away. (...and even if you don't, it'll have your name, section, and assignment number at the top anyway, right?) See the man pages for lpr , enscript , and psnup for more information.

Printing in the Labs

This is probably covered in an ACM tutorial, but if you're in Sieg 329 or another CSE lab, you can print to the printer in the room by adding something like -Pps329 to your lpr command.

6 Strategies for Dealing with Late Assignments

In my previous post Should we penalize students for late or incomplete assignments , we discussed the use of punitive grading as a deterrent for late or incomplete assignment submissions and assessed its effectiveness at teaching accountability and responsibility. In that post, I argued that homework submission is more a behavioral issue than an academic one and should be treated as such. We as educators risk invalidating the purpose of students’ grades by using them as a tool to affect student behavior.

If you are reading this with a furrowed brow wondering how you could possibly reduce or eliminate the submission of late work without grading penalties I have 6 strategies just for you:

1. Stop giving students take-home assignments

Students can easily acquire the answer to almost any assignment we give them without exhibiting any personal knowledge or skill, whether that involves typing the question into a search engine and copying the answer word for word, by having a parent or older family member assist or (more often than we think) by depending on the academic prowess of their peers.

Whenever we attach a grade to any assignment it immediately becomes high-stakes and the likelihood of students copying the answers from outside sources, rather than spending time trying to understand the content increases. It is also a little-known fact that students are more likely to cheat if they fear the loss of reputation or ranking (Rick & Loewenstein, 2008). In such cases, some students’ grades are often inflated and more likely to reflect the extent to which they can persuade their bright and generous friend to allow them to copy the answers rather than their ability to solve those quadratic equations.

Instead of assigning students take-home assignments, it may be more meaningful to allow them to complete assignments in class and use quizzes to measure students' learning outcomes. This provides a more accurate representation of your student's ability and understanding. This strategy reduces inflated grades due to cheating or assistance from outside sources and also deflated grades due to unstable and unsuitable home environments.

2. Home-Work Completion Work Shops: It’s like detention but fancier

Rather than applying grading penalties students who do not submit work by the due date will be required to give up some of their free time during lunch or after school to get the assignment done. It can be given a fancy name like homework support or completion workshops, but the key here is that your students are aware that they will be required to “participate” if the assignment is not submitted for whatever reason.

Using this strategy, students are made aware that opting out of an assignment is not an option and that if extra time is required it will come out of their free time during school hours since they forfeited the convenience of doing it at home by submitting late.

If you notice students were unable to complete the work because they require academic support, they can be tutored during these sessions, by yourself or another student. Furthermore, in cases where students' home environments are not conducive for schoolwork, they get to complete the work in a controlled and safe environment.

3. Use Incomplete instead of Zero

It is easier to defend a student’s grades when we do not allow non-academic variables to affect their academic standing. How do you comfortably have a conversation with a parent and explain to them that the reason why their son is failing mathematics is not due to his difficulty grasping the concept but his inability to submit his work on time?

Assigning an “Incomplete” instead of zero or a reduced score eliminates these uncomfortable conversations and maintains the legitimacy of your academic records.

Without a numerical value, an incomplete assignment will not risk dropping the student's grade and as such, you can fairly discuss their academic performance based on their work ethic while simultaneously communicating that in order to glean their academic ranking in a particular course all the assignments must be submitted.

4. Set a time span instead of a due date

By setting a time span such as “the week of the 20th” or, “due by next week " rather than giving students a specific date allows for flexibility and the illusion of control. Of course, you should have an absolute deadline in your head (or planner) after which you can implement some of the other strategies discussed here.

When students are given a time span this affords you the opportunity to mark the early submissions ( which cuts down on your workload) but more importantly, gives students who are struggling the time and opportunity to ask for assistance.

There is a disadvantage to this strategy though...procrastinators!

5. Use accountability forms

Accountability forms can be used when students miss a deadline. Have them fill out a form on which they will state the reasons for not submitting and also allows them to give a reasonable date by which the submission will be made.

On this form, you should provide a list of interventions that are available at your school such as homework completion workshops, peer tutoring, counseling, etc., and have the student select the intervention they deem appropriate if they do not submit by the date they have provided. That way students are made responsible for what happens next. What is most important is that zero or grade deductions are not provided as options. You may be surprised by the number of students who select those options instead of having to get the work done in a timely fashion.

With accountability forms, you can track patterns and repeat offenders and determine whether or not more severe measures need to be taken with certain students. An editable accountability form can be found in our free resource library, sign up to our mailing list to gain access.

6. Use in-school suspensions

If all else fails and a student consistently submits work late, or a student has a certain number of accountability forms on their file, it may be necessary to get parents or the school’s administration involved. An in-house/ in-school suspension may be necessary.

During school suspensions, students are usually kept separated from their peers but are kept occupied with assignments and quizzes from their different courses. This strategy is more useful than the traditional out-of-school suspension as it teaches students that there are consequences for repeatedly breaking the rules and simultaneously helps to improve their academic standing by having them catch up on all outstanding schoolwork.

Whatever strategy you choose it is imperative that students are aware that you are an advocate and not an adversary. As teachers, we need to support our students and help them feel safe in their learning environment. Implementing some of these strategies may actually eliminate some of the negative confrontations that we have with our students with respect to assignment and homework submissions. We teach students accountability while offering them support and still maintain the integrity of our grades.

• After the first week of class, you will receive an email from Professor Murray with the Microsoft Access textbook and the textbook data files.
• Complete the homework assignment using your personalized Access data files and then upload the completed files to UBLearns .
• Make sure to close the Access database file before submitting to avoid the mistake of submitting a "locked" database file (.laccdb). The .laccdb file appears when the database is opened, and disappears when the database is closed. • Assignment files may be submitted multiple times to UBLearns, but only the most recent, on-time file submissions will be graded.

• Upload the completed StudentRoster.accdb and Employees.accdb database files to UBLearns prior to the due date and time. Late submissions automatically receive a score of 0.
• Upload the questions from page 18 in your textbook to UBLearns prior to the due date and time. No credit for Guided Exerises will be awarded if this is not submitted on time.
• Page 16 Step 5 - If you forget to uncheck the option for Hide Key Column, only the TitleName field will display in the dropdown and you can�t run the Lookup Wizard again without deleting the relationships between the two tables. Since we haven�t covered how to do that yet, here is a workaround to fix this problem. Open the Employees table in design view and go to the Lookup properties tab for the TitleCode field. Change the Column Widths property to 1�;1� and the List Width property to 2�. The Employees table should now show both the TitleCode and TitleName fields in the dropdown list for the TitleCode field.

How to collect homework file submissions

If you have set up a homework task to allow homework file submissions, you will be able to view the files when marking homework submissions.

To collect homework file submissions for a homework tasks, start by entering the class you wish to collect homework for.

Next, click on the  Homework  tab along the top of the page.

The homework sidebar will appear on the  Set homework tab, where homework tasks are published and assigned to pupils. Click on the  View homework tab.

You will be presented with a list of previously published homework tasks. From here, there are two methods of collecting homework file submissions:

To collect homework file submissions via the submissions view, click on the Submission button for the homework task of your choice.

The class will now be in submission view for the homework task. If a pupil has submitted a homework file, they will be indicated with a page icon.

To view a homework file submission in more detail, click on the page icon for the pupil of your choice. From the Uploads popup, click on the filename for the uploaded homework file in order to download it.

To collect homework file submissions via the submissions view, click on the people icon for the homework task of your choice.

You will then be presented with a list of pupils in the class that have been assigned to the homework task.

If a pupil has seen the homework task through their pupil account, an eye icon will be displayed next to their name. If a pupil has submitted a homework file, they will be indicated with a page  icon.

Writing notes for a homework file submission

Once a homework file has been submitted by a pupil, you can leave feedback on the file so that the pupil can understand how to improve their work. To leave feedback for a homework file submission, click on the Leave feedback button.

The Edit note popup will appear. Enter the note of your choice into the text area provided and upload any files as feedback. Click on the OK button once you have finished.

The feedback will now appear on the homework file submission. Submission feedback can be amended at any time, by clicking on the Edit  feedback  button.

If submission feedback has been added, a  speech bubble icon will appear next to the pupil’s name.

The feedback will also be visible in the pupil’s Class Charts account when they view their homework file submission.

To edit the note at any time, by clicking on the Edit  feedback  button.

• What circumstances can arise in the problem?
• What test cases have been devised to check those circumstances?
• What results does the program produce for those test cases?

Any program results or output must be faithfully recorded, not forged. (A thoughtful explanation of unexpected behavior can often be a worthwhile submission and is much better than the alternative.)

• Best for: 24/7 homework assistance  

This service has three main parts . The first is Chegg Study, which includes textbook solutions, Q&A with subject experts, flashcards, video explanations, a math solver, and writing help. The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.  

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school. 

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects. 

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

• Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services) 
• Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them. 

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers. 

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

• Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want 
• Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help 

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help. 

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter! 

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!  

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

• Best for: Science homework help
• Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well. 

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded. 

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.  

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

Homework help websites can be a great resource if you’re struggling in a subject, or even if you just want to make sure that you’re really learning and understanding topics and ideas that you’re interested in. But, there are some possible drawbacks if you don’t use these sites responsibly. 

We’ll go over the good–and the not-so-good–aspects of getting online homework help below. 

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Websites 

First, let’s take a look at the benefits. 

#1: Better Grades Beyond Homework

This is a big one! Getting outside help with your studies can improve your understanding of concepts that you’re learning, which translates into better grades when you take tests or write essays. 

Remember: homework is designed to help reinforce the concepts you learned in class. If you just get easy answers without learning the material behind the problems, you may not have the tools you need to be successful on your class exams…or even standardized tests you’ll need to take for college.

One of the best things about online homework help is that it comes in a variety of forms. The best homework help sites offer resources for all types of learners, including videos, practice activities, and even one-on-one discussions with real-life experts. 

This variety can also be a good thing if you just don’t really resonate with the way a concept is being explained (looking at you, math textbooks!).

Not so fast. There are cons to homework help websites, too. Get to know them below!

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Websites 

Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of online homework help. 

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option. 

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming 

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up. 

No matter which site you choose to use, make sure you research and read reviews before you sign up–especially if it’s a paid service! 

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get. 

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned. 

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating. 

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later. 

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help Websites for You

Now that you know some of our favorite homework help websites, free and paid, you can start doing some additional research on your own to decide which services might work best for you! Here are some top tips for choosing a homework help website. 

Tip 1: Decide How You Learn Best 

Before you decide which site or sites you’re going to use for homework help, y ou should figure out what kind of learning style works for you the most. Are you a visual learner? Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With
