Homework can be a hot-button issue for both you and your child. Setting up a homework contract is a good way to defuse some of that tension and avoid homework battles. Here are two sample contracts you can download.

A homework contract is an agreement that outlines what you and your child will do to make sure homework gets done on time and well. It can help your child develop good study habits and become a more independent learner.

Homework contracts can also outline rewards and consequences for kids when they follow or don’t follow their part of the contract.

You can tailor your contract to address your child’s specific homework challenges. For example, if your child struggles with time management, the contract can lay out what time of day the homework needs to be done.

Fill out the contract together to make sure your child understands what’s being agreed on. Revisit the contract as your child’s workload changes or if things aren’t working as you expected.

How to Create a Homework Contract With Your Tween

If your tween is struggling with homework or just can't seem to keep themself organized, a homework contract can help. This simple agreement between a kid and their parents can help the tween stay on task and give the parents peace of mind, knowing they've laid out their expectations for schoolwork.

What Is a Homework Contract?

A well-written contract points out your child's homework responsibilities point by point. It also helps them understand how you can help guide and work with them in order to keep their assignments under control.

There are also some good reminders for parents. Simple things like designating a distraction-free homework zone in the house and maintaining a healthy, balanced schedule with extra-curricular activities are important.

Sample Student-Parent Homework Contract

Use the contract below as a guide and edit it as necessary. Just remember that a homework contract isn't about punishing a child for failing to complete assignments. Rather, it's a tool that both you and your child can use to stay organized.

It's also a reminder to you both that your child's school experience and success depends on both of you.

Student Responsibilities

  • I will keep track of my homework assignments every day and write them on an agenda or my binder before leaving each class.
  • I will bring home all books and workbooks needed to finish my homework assignments.
  • If I don't understand a homework assignment, I will ask my teacher for more information.
  • I will make sure I know when my assignment is due.
  • I will obey classroom and school rules and follow along when the teacher is teaching.
  • I will let my parents know when I need school supplies that will help me complete assignments. This includes pencils, pens, paper, graph paper, poster board, glue, markers, calculators, etc.
  • I will find a quiet location to finish my assignments so that I'm not distracted by the television, computer or my cell phone.
  • I will complete my assignments before I watch television, text my friends or play on the computer.
  • I will let my parents know if I do not understand an assignment or if I am having trouble keeping up in class.
  • I will allow my parents to quiz me, tutor me or help me understand any material I am struggling with.

Parent Responsibilities

  • I will provide my child with a quiet place to study that's free from distractions.
  • I will stay up-to-date on my child's progress in school.
  • I will provide a calendar for my child to keep track of assignments, projects, and other school demands. We will display this calendar in a visible spot such as the kitchen or family room.
  • I will make sure that my child has the supplies they need to finish their assignments.
  • If my child is struggling with a homework assignment, I will offer suggestions and advice, but will not complete the assignment for them.
  • I will be patient with my child when they do not understand an assignment, and I will keep my emotions in check.
  • I will communicate with my child's teacher if they are struggling with a particular subject.
  • If necessary, I will find a tutor for my child or enlist them in an after-school tutoring program.
  • I will encourage my child to read every day.
  • I will encourage my child to do their homework when they're the most alert (such as in the afternoon or early evening).
  • I will not over-schedule my child with so many extra-curricular activities that they cannot keep up with their homework assignments.
  • I will monitor my child's television time, computer time and time spent texting so that they have ample time to complete their assignments.
  • I will talk with my child every day about their school experience.
  • I will offer my child positive encouragement and will acknowledge thier efforts.
  • I will adjust this homework contract as necessary to meet my child's school needs.

Additional Information on Homework Contracts

The major purpose of a homework contract is to eliminate all the daily hassles that arise from family conflicts over when, where, and how homework is to be done. A contract places the responsibility for getting homework done on the student which is where it should be. It also helps many students establish a homework routine. Even young students will benefit from having a homework contract.

The best contracts are simple ones with few terms.

You definitely should not have your family’s first homework contract use all the terms of the sample contract.

Contracts need to be individualized to suit the needs of each family.

For a homework contract to be effective, all terms must be negotiated and completely agreed upon by both parents and students.

After a trial period of two weeks, the contract should be looked at again by the parent and student to see if any terms should be changed. Provision also needs to be made to look at the contract periodically (monthly, every grading period) to see if it needs to be revised as conditions change.

Remember all children are different. Some will need to do their nightly homework in two or more time periods. Others may need timed breaks to release energy or to get a snack.

How Much Time Should Students Spend on Homework

The rough rule of thumb that most educators use is that students should work on homework approximately 10 minutes for each year in school. Following this rule, a second grader would spend 20 minutes on homework while a fifth grader would spend 50 minutes. At the high school level, it may be necessary for students to do as much as two hours a night depending on the courses that they are taking and whether or not they have a study period at school.

Students do not have to work on homework every day. Weekends can be free of homework for many students depending on their typical assignment load. Older students can choose specific times on the weekend to review the week’s work or do projects. Poor students will profit from spending some weekend time on review or skill-building work. Redoing assignments can be helpful for these students.

It is not necessary for all students to have assigned homework times in a contract. Instead, the agreement can be for students to get all homework done by a specified time. With this type of agreement, no homework for any reason can be done after this time. Instead, the students can get up early to complete any unfinished work.

Why Should Students Have Homework?

In the early grades, there is only a very small relationship between the amount of homework children do and their achievement in school. It is not until sixth grade that a solid relationship can be shown between doing homework and higher achievement. The reason for doing homework earlier is to develop the homework habit as well as independent study skills.

Any child dreads having to do the homework once they are home from school. However, doing their homework is very important and it is something that will definitely help them out in the future as well. It is very important that you are encouraging your child to finish their homework all alone and to have quiet time at the same time. The more that you were encouraging your child to finish their homework, the more likely that they will become more independent and be able to follow all of the rules at home. It can definitely help out your child if you have a specific room in the house or specific corner or space where your child can go to whenever here she is doing any type of homework assignments. It is important that this visa room is quiet and free of any distractions so that your child is able to fully concentrate on his or her work. It’s also recommended that you do some sort of homework contract with your child so that you both are in agreement on the expectations that are required from him or her. In that contract, it is also important for you to let your child to know that he or she will be able to get some sort of price or a word after they have completed all of their assignments throughout the week.

Students who regularly complete and turn in homework assignments perform significantly better in school than those of similar ability who do not do homework (Olympia et al., 1994). Homework is valuable because it gives students a chance to practice, extend, and entrench the academic skills taught in school. Parents can be instrumental in encouraging and motivating their children to complete homework. This homework contract intervention (adapted from Miller & Kelly, 1994) uses goal-setting, a written contract, and rewards to boost student completion (and accuracy) of homework. Students also learn the valuable skills of breaking down academic assignments into smaller, more manageable subtasks and setting priorities for work completion.

How to Write a Two-Week Notice, According to Career Experts

These are the dos and don'ts of resigning from your job.

If you plan on quitting your job , giving proper notice isn't just a formality—it's an opportunity to leave a lasting impression on your former employer. In today's ultra-connected world, that's more important than ever. Not only can making an ungraceful exit burn bridges but there's also a decent chance that your future employer could hear about it. That's where knowing how to write a two-week notice comes in. Experts say it's crucial to take this step to avoid confusion, offer closure, and finish out your role in good faith.

"By adhering to some simple guidelines, you can ensure a professional and respectful departure from your current role, paving the way for continued success in your future endeavors," says Amy Thomas , founder and human resources expert at Horizon Business Service .

Why you should give your two-week notice

Just as first impressions are important for growing your career, so are your last impressions. Experts say that regardless of your reasons for leaving your position, it's always a good idea to make a courteous exit by giving proper notice.

"Giving a formal two-week notice shows respect for your employer and your time working with them. It allows for a smooth transition, giving you time to pass on your knowledge and helping the employer to backfill your position," explains Caitlin Wehniainen , a staffing and recruitment expert at On Cue Hire .

"A formal statement, both written and followed by a meeting with your direct supervisor, demonstrates that you are conscientious about your career. It also enables you to leave on good terms, making it easier to use your supervisor as a professional reference in the future," she tells Best Life.

Does a two-week notice always have to be in writing?

Though it's not universally required, submitting a written two-week notice is strongly recommended, says Thomas.

"It provides a clear, documented record of your intent to resign, ensuring there are no misunderstandings. It also ensures that your resignation details, such as your final working day, are explicitly stated, avoiding potential confusion," she explains.

6 tips for writing a two-week notice letter

As a rule of thumb, two weeks is customarily considered enough time for your employer to begin the transition to your departure. However, Thomas points out that some employment contracts or company policies mandate a longer notice period and that ignoring this could reflect poorly on you as you leave your position.

"Always aim to provide the full notice period unless extenuating circumstances prevent it. Non-compliance could lead to negative repercussions, such as forfeiture of accrued benefits," she tells Best Life.

Matt Collingwood , founder and managing director at VIQU IT Recruitment , says it's important to factor in that you may not hand in your two-week notice letter on the day you write it.

"Make sure you have worked out your last day correctly based on your notice period, and clearly state the date of your last working day. It would be unfortunate if there is any confusion over your last day and either party becomes annoyed and frustrated with the other," he says.

2. Keep it clear and concise.

Thomas notes that it's also important to use clear and concise language so your message is properly received. She suggests opening your letter with something like the following: "I am writing to formally submit my resignation from my position at [Company Name], effective two weeks from today, [Last Working Day]."

"Articulate your intention to resign and include the effective date of your resignation. This eliminates any ambiguity about your departure," Thomas says.

3. Express gratitude.

"Acknowledge the opportunities and experiences you have gained. This leaves a positive impression and demonstrates your appreciation," says Thomas.

4. Maintain a professional tone.

When it comes to giving your two-week notice, what you say and how you say it are of equal importance.

"Use a formal and respectful tone throughout the letter. This reflects well on your professional demeanor. At the very least, remain neutral," advises Thomas.

5. Offer assistance during the transition.

Your employer might be surprised by your decision to resign, but you can ease the atmosphere by offering to help with the transition process.

"This gesture reflects your commitment to ensuring a smooth handover," says Thomas. For instance, she suggests saying something like: "I am committed to ensuring a smooth transition and am willing to assist in training and transfer of my responsibilities."

6. Follow up with an email.

If you hand your employer a physical two-week notice letter, it's a good idea to follow up with an email so that you have a digital record of your communications.

"Write a short email stating that you have given your notice via letter," advises Collingwood, adding that you should also include the date that you submitted the letter to your advisor. "Doing both of these things ensures that there is evidence of the fact your notice was given and when."

This is a good opportunity to request a meeting to discuss your transition plan in person. "This shows professionalism and helps ensure a smooth handover," notes Wehniainen.

Looking for a two-week notice template? Wehniainen says these three drafts make good starting points. You can simply choose one and fill in your information or give it a personal slant. Either way, be sure to include your company name, company address, current position, the date of your resignation, your intended last day of work, and your signature.

Hello (Supervisor Name),

I'm writing to inform you that I am resigning from my position, and my last day will be (date). Thank you for the opportunity to work here.

I would like to request a meeting to discuss my transition plan and answer any questions. Here are a few days and times I'm available this week (provide your availability).

Thank you again for the opportunity to serve as (your title). I will always think fondly of my time here, and it has been a valuable experience for me.

Common mistakes to avoid when giving your two-week notice

Don't leave on a negative note.

It may be tempting to explain what led to your resignation, especially if the circumstances left you feeling sour. However, "this can burn bridges and harm your reputation," cautions Lauren Winans , CEO and principal HR consultant at Next Level Benefits .

Instead, she recommends avoiding negative language or criticism of the company and colleagues. Maintain a positive—or at least neutral—tone if you'd like to preserve your working relationships.

Don't be blindsided by an immediate departure.

Just because you're offering two more weeks of your time doesn't mean your employer will necessarily want to keep you on after you've resigned.

"Be prepared for the possibility that your employer might ask you to leave immediately. Ensure you have removed personal items and prepared any necessary documentation before giving your notice," suggests Thomas.

Don't CC anyone.

If you're planning to send a two-week notice email, Wehniainen recommends against sending a group notification. This may be viewed as going over your advisor's head and can complicate communications moving forward.

"Only send your letter to your direct supervisor, no CCs necessary. Do not escalate your resignation letter to the C-level unless that is who you report to," she says.

Don't ignore company policies.

Before you hand in your resignation letter, it's a good idea to do your homework on anything that might affect your notice period or quitting procedures.

"Familiarize yourself with your company's resignation policies. Some organizations may have specific requirements or procedures that you need to follow when submitting your notice," Thomas says.

If you're ready to move on from your current position, crafting a thoughtful two-week notice letter or email can help you leave on a high note.

Keeping it short and simple is key: State your intention to resign, share some words of gratitude, indicate a willingness to help with the transition, and request next steps, such as a follow-up meeting to discuss the details. Maintain a positive tone that demonstrates professionalism and warmth, and make it clear that you value the relationships you've cultivated in the workplace.

Of course, once you've submitted your letter, all that's left is to follow it up with action. Remember that how you conduct yourself in your last weeks as an employee will be memorable to your team—so it's a good idea to give it your best until you're officially released from the position. Then, onwards and upwards!

Sky waive Kysre Gondrezick as team looks to find right mix of contracts, fresh help

Sky general manager Jeff Pagliocca is making midseason moves, starting with waiving guard Kysre Gondrezick.

The decision Friday came just ahead of the halfway mark of the season, at which point non-guaranteed contracts become guaranteed. Gondrezick was originally signed to a training-camp contract, which was converted to a one-year, non-guaranteed deal before the start of the season. She appeared in five regular-season games, including Thursday night’s 95-83 loss to the Aces.

With Gondrezick gone, the Sky (6-10) now have 10 available players on their roster after center/forward Elizabeth Williams had season-ending surgery on her right meniscus this week. It’s unlikely they’ll sign anyone ahead of their game against the Lynx on Sunday.

However, over the next week and a half, teams will begin waiving players signed to non-guaranteed contracts, which could be a way for the Sky to add talent. Pagliocca also could opt to give guard Brynna Maxwell another look. The Sky drafted her 13th overall in April but waived her after she injured her knee the next month in training camp.

Teams can begin using seven-day contracts in the second half, giving the Sky another avenue to try out players without having to sign them for the rest of the season, which comes with a full salary commitment, even if the player is waived. A player is only permitted to sign three seven-day contracts with the same team per season.

The Sky’s three-point struggles were on full display again Thursday. After finishing 4-for-15 (26.6%) against the Aces, they’re now last in the league in three-point percentage, averaging 29.9% through 16 games. Only 16.1% of their points have come from behind the arc — also last in the WNBA.

Addressing that problem could be justification for Maxwell returning. Other guards Pagliocca could consider are free agents Crystal Dangerfield, Dyashia Fair and Emma Cannon.

Until Gondrezick connected in the final two minutes, guard Marina Mabrey was the only Sky player to score from deep against the Aces, going 3-for-8 and finishing with a team-high 21 points. The Aces, meanwhile, were 9-for-25 from deep (36%) and scored 15 points from three-point range in the second half alone.

How can the Sky make up for such a glaring difference?

“We have to play better defense,” coach Teresa Weatherspoon said after the game.

But defense alone won’t close the gap.

Six weeks into the season, Weatherspoon is still figuring out her rotations. Guard Dana Evans is one of the team’s best spot-up shooters, hitting 35.4% from three-point range this season, but she has seen her minutes dwindle, from an average of 26.7 to 17 combined the last two games. Weatherspoon moved her out of the starting five June 16 in favor of Lindsay Allen and Chennedy Carter.

That decision had considerable benefits. Allen’s facilitating and Carter’s scoring have helped the Sky to be more effective early. And Evans can now be more of an off-ball scoring threat.

However, she played under five minutes against the Aces.

“That group was rolling,” Weatherspoon said of her lineup Thursday. “We were just trying to see if they could roll us up out of the hump that we were in.”

Negotiations between Klay Thompson, Warriors frozen as free agency looms: Sources

Klay Thompson isn’t currently mulling a shorter-than-desired offer from the Golden State Warriors . Despite a wide open negotiation window, there isn’t a one-year, two-year or three-year deal on the table. Because nothing is currently on the table, according to league sources. There’s been no productive discussion between the Warriors and Thompson or his representatives.

Talks are essentially frozen. With free agency now less than 10 days away, Thompson’s exit from the only franchise he has ever known feels closer and more probable than ever before.

The Warriors have outwardly maintained their desire to bring Thompson back at the right price and in the right role, per league sources, but have viewed his situation as business to sort through after various other roster-building avenues have been explored. They’ve been actively searching for paths to larger-scale upgrades, using Chris Paul ’s non-guaranteed $30 million contract as a flexible tool. There’s been talk with Paul about possibly pushing that guarantee date back from June 28 into July, if necessary, per league sources, which would only be telling Thompson to wait longer.

If the Warriors can acquire a big name, high-salary player, that would significantly impact what they’re able to offer Thompson, considering their plan to duck the second apron and perhaps drop below the tax entirely. This calculated business approach — which has merit, considering the Warriors’ desperate need to improve an inadequate roster — can come off as cold to a franchise legend like Thompson , who won four titles in his 13 seasons with the Warriors but is being bumped far down the current offseason priority list.

Part of the Warriors’ calculus, it seems, is that Thompson could discover a lukewarm free-agent market and eventually return at a bargain rate. Controlling owner Joe Lacob, second-year general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. and vice president Kirk Lacob are pulling the levers. Early indications are that that read of the market will be proven correct. Word is there are mostly shorter-term contracts out there for veteran free agents, partly why Malik Monk returned to Sacramento on a four-year deal at only $78 million.

There has been no traction between Thompson and the Orlando Magic , according to league sources, despite some initial mutual interest. There is expected to be interest from other cap space teams and some longer-term offers on the table in a market that can always move in unpredictable directions. It’s always possible Thompson’s best offers may end up smaller in money and shorter in years than many predicted or expected, leading some to presume that’ll lead back to an inevitable reunion with the Warriors at a rate both sides are comfortable.

But that’s not necessarily the case. Even if the Warriors eventually approach Thompson with a competitive offer, matching or exceeding the money and years, it has become increasingly conceivable, according to league sources, that Thompson will decide to leave regardless, searching for a fresh start in a different environment, detached from some of the built-up friction of the previous couple seasons.

Before last season, the Warriors and Thompson discussed the idea of an extension. Our Shams Charania reported talks were in the two-year, $48 million range. Nothing was ever close.

Some other quick buzz: Kevon Looney , drafted in 2015, has been a member of the Warriors for nearly nine years. It appears that his tenure will continue into next week. Only $3 million of Looney’s $8 million is currently guaranteed for next season. The other $5 million guarantees on Monday, presenting the possibility he could be released.

But that isn’t the Warriors’ current plan, according to league sources. They are expected to let the rest of Looney’s $8 million contract guarantee, keeping him in their current plans, though it does remain possible they eventually use his salary to help complete an offseason trade.

Looney still has value as a leader in the locker room and remains one of Steve Kerr’s favorite players, a voice he relies on during tense times but also a center he trusts on the floor. Looney was edged out of the rotation midseason by rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis — and would presumably enter next season behind Jackson-Davis on the depth chart — but Looney moved his way back into the rotation in April and appeared in their Play-In Tournament loss in Sacramento, guarding Domantas Sabonis for key stretches.

If the Warriors did release Looney and replace him with a minimum veteran center, they wouldn’t save much salary or tax regardless. There has been no talk of a release-and-re-sign of Looney, either, because he’d be expected to have interest on the open market from several rivals and would explore those options. As of now, Looney remains in the Warriors’ plan as he nears the decade mark with the franchise.
