Media Literacy Education and AI

How can educators help students think critically and evaluate all types of communication including digital platforms? In this edition of Education Now, panelists discuss the skills needed to navigate a world increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence, misinformation, and fake news.

  • Merve Lapus , vice president, Education Outreach & Engagement, Common Sense Education
  • Sarah Newman , director of art and education, metaLAB (at) Harvard, Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University
  • Faith Rogow , author, Media Literacy for Young Children: Teaching Beyond the Screen Time Debates

Uche Amaechi , Lecturer on Education, HGSE

Key Takeaways:

  • It is never too soon and never too late to empower students to think critically and creatively, not cynically, about generative AI and all media. An inquiry mindset is a good entry point.
  • Teach students the habit of asking inquiry-based critical thinking questions and remind them that all media are created and what is included and excluded influences the messages that are conveyed.
  • Don’t give AI too much power. Everyone, including educators, should actively question the role they want new technologies to have in our lives, including our schools, colleges, and universities.

Reimagining Work in the Pandemic and Beyond – Webinar Recording

Featuring: ravin jesuthasan, futurist, author of reinventing jobs , and managing director at willis towers watson.

The future of work is coming fast. As the coronavirus crisis continues to accelerate many of the underpinning factors – from remote working and greater automation, to a greater flexibility in deploying talent and rapidly shifting skill premiums – work as we knew it has changed, likely forever, in a matter of weeks.

The actions of leaders and HR professionals have never been more important. But what does an ethical and sustainable response look like? How can leaders reimagine how and by whom work gets done within their organisation, not just where? And how can we adapt an agile and continuous learning mindset in the face of chaos?

Join Ravin leveraging new primary research and his ongoing work with the World Economic Forum.

In this webinar we share:

  • New research into the impact of the coronavirus crisis on jobs, the talent marketplace, and the increasingly pivotal role of the HR practitioner
  • Case studies of organisations successfully adjusting to the “new normal”
  • Frameworks and tools for leaders and HR professionals navigating the pandemic and beyond

From upskilling and reskilling employees to sharing industry talent across companies, Ravin will provide a blueprint for reimagining work within your organisation, while building greater resilience and agility.

Life’s Work: An Interview with Hernan Diaz

  • Alison Beard

harvard business publishing education webinars

The Pulitzer Prize–winning author reflects on how literature shapes us and more.

In his novel Trust, which won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize, Diaz offered four contrasting perspectives on early-20th-century U.S. capitalism—a treatment that modern-day readers found deeply resonant. The author, who was born in Argentina, raised in Sweden, and now lives in the United States, says he likes to experiment with different voices and “mess with” American mythology. A longtime professor and academic editor, he published his first novel, In the Distance , a Pulitzer finalist, at age 44. Trust was his second.

  • Alison Beard is an executive editor at Harvard Business Review and previously worked as a reporter and editor at the Financial Times. A mom of two, she tries—and sometimes succeeds—to apply management best practices to her household. alisonwbeard
