Haunted Buffalo: The Holiday Inn Grand Island Ghost

Turns out, there are plenty of stories across Western New York regarding haunted buildings, ghosts, and folklore.

grand island hotel haunted

One of the most popular haunted buildings in all of Western New York is actually on Grand Island.

The story of the Holiday Inn, Grand Island ghost.

To give a further backstory, the haunting of this hotel actually dates back long before the Holiday Inn opened in 1973 on Whitehaven Road (what is now the Radisson Hotel).

According to Buffalo Digest , in the 1830s, Whitehaven Settlement, which was a logging community, occupied the area which now holds the hotel.

Back then, there was a mansion that stood where the hotel does that Grand Island supervisor John Nice owned. Nice bought the mansion by 1848 for his wife and 10 children.

There was a fire that took the life of a little girl, 8-10 years of age and the house burned down in 1962.

Many employees and guests of the Holiday Inn (Radisson Hotel) from 1973 onward have reported witnessing a ghost in the building, which is a little girl named Tanya, who died in a fire on the grounds of the hotel.

There are even guests who say they saw the girl close up, including John Kostigian, who awoke in his suite to find the ghost standing at the foot of his bed one night, according to The Buffalo News .

Kostigian assumed it was a dream after he saw the girl vanish but then he heard other stories of the same girl named Tanya, who haunts the building.

Has anyone heard of this story or visited the Radisson Hotel (Holiday Inn) before?

A haunted location: Holiday Inn in Grand Island, New York.

Details: in the holiday inn there is a room that is all locked up.

This is because whenever someone rented that room, they got a call in the middle of the night at the same time and when they picked up all they heard was a little girl laughing.

Holiday Inn Grand Island Ghost Story

The "story"... The ghost of a little girl, who was burnt to death in a house that once stood here, now haunts the hotel built over the buried ashes of her former home. Guests, maids, managers, and bellboys have all witnessed Tanya's playful spirit here. People usually report her jumping on beds in empty rooms or running through the halls at night. Grand Island is just west of Buffalo, NY. And the corrected story.... It is a 30-year-old three story Holiday Inn hotel.  No child ever burned to death in the house that stood where the hotel is.  The house was built in the 1830s as part of the Whitehaven Sawmill Settlement and is on the East Niagara River. The first Grand Island, NY supervisor, John Nice, bought the property including the house in 1848. He and his wife raised their ten children, none of them named Tanya, in that house, referred to as "the mansion."   The house, a restaurant at the time, burned in 1962. No one burned to death in that fire. However, people just love the story which has changed several times over the past 28-29 years. Teddy Linenfelser Historian, Town of Grand Island, NY

A strange sway

When I entered the lobby my sister and I felt as though we were swaying in a circle. I also felt as though someone or something was grabbing my throat and my heart was beating abnormally fast.

Once upon a time...

I once stayed in this “Grand” hotel. It wasn’t so “Grand” when an apparition lifted me 16 inches off of the floor in the middle of the night. I awoke to a sound of heavy moaning coming from the room next door. I thought this was strange so I went and knocked on the door. No one answered. I knocked once more (just for gigs) and holy moly I heard something behind that door moan. Another experience I had was when I ate dinner in their dining room. I was eating alphabet soup alone and I had a sudden urge to use the potty. I got up and used the potty. When I came back the letters in my soup said “EGGS GUY”. I have no idea what this could mean. I’ve spent a days researching “egg guy” but have found no correlation to the paranormal but I still believe it’s true meaning is out there. Overall the place is def haunted.

They don't allow ghost hunters

Apparently they have a policy that prevents paranormal investigators from investigating the hotel. Maybe they're afraid of the publicity? I don't know.

grand island hotel haunted

I booked two rooms with Hotwire and then after I know the hotel's name, I search this hotel (Holiday Inn At Grand Island ,NY)

on the internet. I realize it's haunted, not just one person, lots of

people saying that.

I called them and hope I could rebook another 3* hotel in the area,

since it's their fault to put a haunted hotel in their list. They said no change , no refund.

People book rooms from Hotwire don't know the hotel's name . After you pay , then you know the name. Then it will be all too late,

because it's not refundable, or changable.

It's $240 value, I'm really dissapointed at Hotwire.com.

Is there any way I can get money back? Somebody help Pls!!!!

Money back? I think I'd pay extra if it was really haunted. Great entertainment value.

You do know there's no such thing as "haunted", right?

And, some people would pay extra if they thought they were getting to stay at a "haunted" hotel....

I booked a hotel through hotwire because the prices were so great. We experienced very strange things and ended up leaving at 2am in the morning. Didnt expect to get my money back because it such a deal and that it what the contract states. It was a well known hotel but certain rooms were blocked off for hotwire and now we know why.

That's how Hotwire works - you take a chance on the hotel. That's all explained on their website, so I'm not sure why you're surprised. As for the hotel being haunted, well, I myself don't believe in ghosts, but clearly you do; but even the people who report seeing "Tanya" don't say she's anything other than mischievous. I don't see why this is such a dealbreaker for you.

Join us on a haunted journey through the majestic state of New York!

The Empire State offers more than beautiful sceneries of mountains, oceanfront views, deep gorges, wineries, and small charming towns. In fact, New York is so beautiful that many find it hard to leave … including the dead. New York has some incredibly spectral inns where you can actually spend the nights with phantoms pulled from their historical pages.  Here we have hand-picked nine of the most haunted inns and hotels of New York.

Shanley Hotel in Napanoch NY

grand island hotel haunted

Like any other old hotel, intrigue, crime sex, and murder co-existed with the old fashioned good times at this seemingly serene mountain resort. All hotels have ghosts of a sort, due to the many lives intersecting within its walls, but the Shanley is special. It tops many lists of MOST HAUNTED hotels.

The penetration of dozens of ghosts in this property will always remain a mystery. Some say it is because of the location on a supernatural “vortex” and others say the secret is in the old mountains that surround the hotel. Regardless, it is an experience as no other can deliver.

Avon Inn  in Avon NY

Haunted Avon Inn - Haunted Journeys

The haunts here have been occurring throughout the decades. One of the earliest documented ghostly experiences occurred in 1986. The son of the owner at the time, Mr.Chappo, claimed he was heading up the main stairs and was stopped because a little girl about 8-year-old, in period dress, caught his attention by starring down at him.

Haunted Algonquin Hotel - Haunted Journeys

The historic Algonquin Hotel, which opened in 1902, could be best known for what used to be their Round Table Room meetings. These included the famous "Vicious Circle" of writers, actors, and playwrights including Dorothy Parker, the most well-known member to this day.

Many say that Dorothy Parker still rounds this hotel, but from the other side! It all started around 2004 when the hotel was renovated. Soon after strange noises have been heard, with furnishings moving around and elevators stopping on floors with no human prompting!  There have even been some reports of guests seeing apparitions. Many believe the ghosts are members of the Vicious Circle, including Dorothy.

Burn Brae Mansion in Glen Spey NY

grand island hotel haunted

Linda Blair, who played Ragan in "The Exorcist" states this is one of her most favorite places to stay when up in the area, it must be a very special place.  It appears, as well, it is the favorite of many of the phantoms that still lurk here.

Constructed in 1907, this grand Victorian masterpiece is offered publicly as an inn.  But you will get more than just a spectacular room.  You may also see a phantom or two!  For four decades, both guests, staff and even the owners have reported ghost sightings, unexplained occurrences and general feelings of an otherworldly presence.

The original owners’ son, Charles Elkin, was said to be a skilled organist, and guests and staff have reported hearing organ music playing in the house.

More recently, an elderly couple in their 90s, the Hapijs, both died in the house. Guests say that they can still see them from the front yard playing chess by the big window, hear his classical music and smell her daily baking.

During an investigation, a local paranormal investigation group, South Jersey Ghost Researchers found evidence that was “off the charts compared to an average investigation,” according to Burn Brae’s website.

Batcheller Mansion Inn in Saratoga NY

Haunted Batcheller Mansion - Haunted Journeys

Built in 1873, the Batcheller Mansion Inn is an architectural masterpiece, one of Saratoga, New York's great Victorian houses. There is no wonder that centuries of history and character have left imprints from the spirit world. These have been testified by staff and guests alike.

The 1873 Batcheller Mansion Inn was originally the home to a Civil War veteran and prominent political figure, George Sherman Batcheller. It appears that the soldier has such a stronghold on this property that he has never let go.

Both staff and visitors have reported meeting up with his ghosts in the beautiful mansion that offers celestial get-aways to the haunted traveler!

Radisson Hotel Niagara Falls in Grand Island NY

Haunted Radisson Hotel in Niagara Falls - Haunted Journeys

The building in which the Radisson Hotel resides, near Niagara Falls, was constructed in 1973.  So it doesn't take an ancient property to be haunted. The ghosts here were inherited from what was used to be there.

The previous occupant of this space was a beautiful historic mansion home to one of the wealthiest in the area with a large family. Tragically, it is believed to have been destroyed by fire. With that, although not verified, lives were lost.

With each renovation, with multiple hotels hanging their sign outside the buildings, the hauntings intensify. These paranormal events have been witnessed and documented by guests and staff as well. Sightings of a little girl continue to happen with curious repetition. You may see her playing in the halls of the hotel, or even running around in the pool had been drained.  When the staff went to check after the report, small footprints are seen at the bottom of the pool!  More chillingly, the little girl will appear suddenly at the foot of the bed.

There are many other reports at this intensely haunted modern hotel, showing that the earth truly retains the energy from restless souls from other previous structures that once laid on its soil.

Mansfield Hotel in New York City NY

grand island hotel haunted

An orphanage used to stand on the land that now holds the historic and beautifully eerie Mansfield Hotel. Constructed in the popular Beaux-Arts style, the property was originally built as a fancy hostel-type hotel for New York’s elite.

Today, it continues to host (in spirit form) these spectral characters that have a hard time leaving their memories behind.  It's hard to debate when a TripAdvisor reviewer stated in 2015, “And… it turns out that it’s extremely haunted and we had tons of paranormal activity in our room, but the staff isn’t allowed to talk about it.”

Unfortunately, the hotel avoids and does not acknowledge their phantom guests.  We wonder how the spirits have reacted to this disregard.  It certainly has not distracted the curious haunted tourists, though!  They keep coming in through to pay their respects to the departed.

Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown NY

Haunted Otesaga Resort Hotel - Haunted Journeys

For years, the 103-year-old Otesaga Resort Hotel was rumored to have paranormal activity, as confirmed by a feature on SyFy's Ghost Hunters.

Historically, the property's purpose (from 1920 to 1954) explains most of the spectral happenings. The hotel was once the Knox School for Girls, a private girl’s school. Could this be the reason guests have reported hearing children playing and giggling in the third-floor hallway?

Disembodied voices have been heard in the Glimmerglass Room. In addition, apparitions have been seen walking hand-in-hand in period clothing. Contributing more eeriness to this report, the staff have heard their names being called from unseen sources. A security officer has heard people walking above him on the fifth floor when there was no one up there!

Allegiance Bed & Breakfast in Mount Morris NY

Haunted Allegiance Bed and Breakfast - Haunted Journeys

The inside is home to two friendly yet mischievous permanent residents – Karen and Raymond (don't call him Ray - he doesn't like it). Karen has been spotted ascending the stairs a few times with her straight, gray hair and long dress. She has also been spotted sitting at the end of a guest's bed! You will certainly get your fill her of conversation. For you see, Raymond is known for being quite chatty.

And of course, there is Alice Montclair, who actually can be seen walking through walls, sometimes standing in the midst of the barrier. One time she was asked who she was, and she kindly returned the inquiry telling her full name.

Although its name honors Francis Bellamy, a "local son" who authored our Pledge of Allegiance, it's not Francis who frequently pays a visit.

The Haunted: Mackinac Island

As we get deeper into October, I’ve decided to explore some pet cases of mine. That means we’re staying in Michigan for this week’s post. In this post, we’ll explore Mackinac Island (pronounced mack-ih-naw , y’all) and its many hauntings.

Brief History

I recognize that many of my readers will not be familiar with Mackinac Island, so let’s go over some brief details and history of the island. Mackinac is a small island (around 4 sq miles total) in Lake Huron, between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsula. The population is just under 500 people according to the 2010 census, but thousands of tourists visit each year for the scenic views, historical landmarks, cultural events, and fudge. People always visit for the fudge. Cars are banned on the island, and the main forms of transportation are horses and bikes.           Now, onto the history. Prior to the French “discovering” Mackinac Island, Ojibwa and Odawa tribes of Native Americans used the island as a burial ground. They referred to it as Michilimackinac, which means “Great Turtle” in the Odawa dialect. However, when the British realized that the position could serve them strategically, they stole the land from the natives in 1780 and built a fort. The United States took the land from the British in 1783, and it was used as the HQ for the American Fur Company for a time before transitioning into a resort. It was then taken back by the British during the War of 1812, but the United States again stole it back in 1815. So. A lot of wartime activities. A lot of Native significance to the land. It also has a history as a resort spot, and has a history of witch hunts, but we’ll get into specifics of those in the individual hauntings.

Witch’s Drowning Pool

grand island hotel haunted

The drowning pool is located near the southern tip of Mackinac Island. The pool is relatively small, but is deeper than it appears, boasting a near 20-foot dropoff into its depths. Basically, if a woman was accused of being a witch – and it was always women – they would be tried in one of two ways to determine whether they were actually a witch or not. The first method involved placing one end of a lever over the pond, and having a weight repeatedly placed on and removed from the other end, dunking the accused into the pond over and over. Hence this technique has been dubbed dunking. If the woman drowned without admitting to being a witch, she was declared innocent. If she admitted to being a witch, the dunking stopped…but the accused were then hanged. The second method involved binding the accused’s ankles bound and weighed down with rocks. If they floated, they were witches. If they sank, they were declared innocent in death.           In the 1700s and 1800s, seven women were accused and tried in this way. All seven of them are said to still haunt the depths of the drowning pool. Many visitors claim to see or hear splashing in the waters without a source. Figures and shadows have been seen both above and below the surface of the water. Sometimes these spirits are smudges, sometimes they have more definitively human features. Sometimes the figures hover above the water. Sometimes they are seen drifting below the surface placidly. Regardless of where they appear, these sightings are not accompanied by ripples, waves, or wakes.

The Grand Hotel

grand island hotel haunted

The Grand Hotel was built in 1887. Local historians claim that the hotel was built over an old cemetery. Allegedly, bodies were attempted to be relocated, but there were simply too many to keep track of, so they gave up. Now, keep in mind that the only places I’m seeing these rumors is on other writeups from sources such as news sites, radio stations, travel sites, etc. I have not come across sources contemporary to the time of construction, so this very well could be an urban legend. Or maybe the fact that there could be bodies scattered beneath the Grand Hotel explains the high diversity of ghosts within its walls.           There are so many different entities reported being seen at the Grand Hotel that I feel comfortable saying that we won’t get to them all. Over the years there have been various spirits spotted dressed in clothes described as being from roughly the 19th century. One such ghost is known as Little Rebecca. Rebecca was a child when she died on the hotel grounds. She is most often seen on the fourth floor of the hotel, wandering the halls and disappearing. She most often appears between 2 and 4 AM (hello witching hour!) to singular people in the halls.           Another commonly spotted spirit is known as the woman in black. She is most often seen after dark, walking around the Grand Hotel’s porch. She also has a spectral companion, and that’s what makes her so interesting to me. She’s seen walking a large white dog. White dogs are very, very rarely mentioned when it comes to ghosts. Typically, we hear all about death being personified as a black dog, or black dogs being an omen of death. The fact that she has a white dog alongside her suggests that perhaps they were companions in life, which then opens the can of worms of whether animals have souls and can pass on. A lot of big questions are brought up by this woman and her pup.           I saved the scariest entity for last. There is something aggressive haunting the halls of the Grand Hotel. Several People have encountered a shadowy black mass with glowing red eyes. From what I can tell, it seems to manifest as a semi-transparent, semi-solid shadow or cloud. It does not appear to take the full shape of a human – i.e. no arms or legs – though it is roughly human-shaped. It apparently gives off malevolent vibes and has physically attacked several people, even knocking a maintenance man out. It apparently often appears in the hotels theater, near the stage.

Fort Mackinac

grand island hotel haunted

Fort Mackinac was built on the island during the Revolutionary War, since the island was at a strategic point (as we briefly discussed earlier). The fort is comprised of fourteen total buildings – including several soldiers’ quarters, barracks, storehouses, a hospital, a bathhouse, a schoolhouse, and more. Basically, everything a soldier or their family would need in daily life could be found within the fort walls. The current state of the fort is largely the same as it was in the 19th century – it has neither been modernized nor allowed to fall to ruin.           The haunting phenomena at Fort Mackinac varies in severity, depending on the building you visit. Across the fort, however, there seems to be a consistent presence of low-level activity. Visitors to the fort routinely report hearing the sound of fife music, though there is no source to be found. Rifle shots are heard often, even when there are no reenactments occurring. Orbs appear in many photos taken at the Fort – even outdoors, where dust is unlikely to be caught in a camera flash, and bugs tend to appear as bugs or blurs when captured.           The Fort Mackinac hospital also has reports of strange spiritual phenomena. Visitors have reported seeing the ghostly appearance of amputated limbs – meaning the limb itself, separated from the body. They do not see the person it was once attached to, so this does not seem to be a soul trapped on our plane of existence, as we normally conceptualize ghosts to be. Guests also report feeling overwhelming feelings of sadness in the hospital. These reports lead me to believe that the trauma experienced there imprinted itself on the very building and now shows itself over and over again, like a record skipping. For more information on this theory, look up the Stone Tape Theory.           The guard house and buildings that served as soldiers’ quarters also have reports of phenomena. The sounds of children crying are one of the most often reported phenomena. In line with the idea of kid ghosts, toys are found thrown around in the mornings despite being put away the night before – the idea being that the spirit children come out to play at night. Motion detectors often get triggered with nothing to be seen by the naked eye. Furniture gets moved around, apparently on its own. I don’t have a lot to say about that, apart from the idea that maybe the ghosts are trying to restore the quarters to how they remembered them to be – when they were alive that chair when in this corner, that sort of thing.

Mission Point Resort

grand island hotel haunted

Mission Point Resort began as a single home in 1825, built by Amanda and William Ferry, who were Christian Missionaries. The building began to morph into a complex in the 1950s, thanks to the Moral Rearmament which is a fairly radical nondenominational religious movement. I’m not going to get into it here, because it could really be its own post. The buildings were then utilized in 1966 to form the short lived Mackinac College. After the college shut down four years later, the complex was used for religious programming and getaways. In 1972, Mission Point Resort began pivoting away from its religious roots and instead focused on vacationers and those looking for a getaway. It was given the name Mission Point Resort in 1987.           There are a lot of low-level happenings at Mission Point Resort. People hear voices that have no source. Visitors report feeling watched, which is something that I discount almost immediately – your mind can play all sorts of tricks on you when you’re alone in an unfamiliar place, after all. There have also been reports of sudden, unexplainable drops of temperature.           The most sighted spirits at Mission Point are those of children. According to local lore, a tuberculosis outbreak took hold at Mission Point in the early 1800s. Those infected – most of which were children – were relegated to the cellar, where most died from the disease. Again, this seems to me more urban legend than fact – I was unable to find corroborating sources from the time period. One of the ghosts that has a name at the Mission is Lucy. Lucy and her parents lived at Mission Point, though the time period during which she was alive is unknown. The story goes that Lucy’s parents were called back to Detroit on business. Lucy was too ill to travel with them, so she was left to rest at Mission Point. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her illness before her parents returned, and now her lost spirit roams the halls, still crying out for her mother and father.           Finally, the most famous ghost of Mission Point Resort is known as Harvey. Harvey was a student at Mackinac College during its active years – the specific year is unknown, but we know it had to be between 1966 and 1970. Harvey was lovelorn, brokenhearted after his girlfriend broke up with him. He walked into the woods and completed suicide by shooting himself. His body was not found for some time – timeframes range from a few months to half a year. The official ruling on his death was said to have been suicide, but rumors on campus were that someone had murdered him – there had allegedly been two bullets his Harvey’s head when his body was found. Now, Harvey’s spirit is said to haunt the theater at the Mission Point Resort, poking and prodding guests.

Grand Hotel

grand island hotel haunted

This hotel, built in the late 19th century, is known to have more than a few haunts as a result of some grisly historic facts. It is said that when the hotel’s foundation was laid, many human skeletons were unearthed. And the small horse corral is said to be on the site of the first post cemetery. Rumor has it that not all the bodies were recovered when the cemetery was moved to its new location.

Another interesting fact: The Grand Hotel provided one of the settings for the 1980 film “Somewhere in Time,” starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. The hotel holds a convention every October for fans of the cult-classic film.

Grand Hotel’s Halloween frights to feature Haunted Maze on Mackinac Island

Grand Hotel

Halloween season is a fun and frightful time at Mackinac Island's Grand Hotel. Photo provided by Grand Hotel.

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI - Mackinac’s famous Grand Hotel is an elegant place, known for its stately Afternoon Teas and dress code for the evenings. But this Halloween season, there will be plenty of screams.

A Haunted Maze and Trail have been built on the grounds in front of the resort. It will be open to Grand Hotel’s overnight guests with complimentary admission. The public can also come and savor the spooky atmosphere for a $5 admission, which will be donated to Give Kids the World , a nonprofit that runs a resort area in Florida offering ill children and their families free vacations.

On Mackinac, Grand Hotel’s creative grounds crew has been busy planning and constructing lots of scary twists and turns. A video of the maze shows clowns, figures in creepy costumes - even one wielding a chainsaw.

“Trek through our Haunted Maze and Trail during your trip to Mackinac Island,” Grand Hotel staff said. “The trail meanders through Grand Hotel’s Woodlands Activity Center and is approximately 2,000 feet long, and the maze will be at the end of the haunted trail. Both the maze and trail will have live spooky actors.”

The opening date is Friday, Oct. 13 (mwa-ha-ha-ha!) and there are other weekend dates to follow. For more information on dates and times, check Grand Hotel’s website here.
