Three years after the events at Beacon Mental Hospital, Sebastian Castellanos has left the Krimson City Police Department and continues to be haunted by his experiences at Beacon, the disappearance of his wife Myra , and the death of his daughter Lily in a house fire. Sebastian is then approached by former partner and Mobius agent Juli Kidman , who reveals to him that Lily is still alive since Mobius faked her death. However, Mobius now needs Sebastian's help in saving her. Sebastian is brought to a secret Mobius facility where he meets the Administrator, who further explains that Lily is being used as the Core for a new STEM system to simulate an idyllic town called Union . However, some time ago, Mobius lost contact with Lily and their agents inside Union, and they no longer have any control over the STEM. Sebastian reluctantly agrees to help Mobius so that he has a chance to save Lily and enter the STEM.

Upon entering Union, Sebastian quickly finds that the town has been turned into a nightmare realm where all of the inhabitants have either been killed or mutated into bloodthirsty monsters. In addition, Sebastian witnesses a mysterious photographer with supernatural powers hunting down and murdering Mobius operatives. He manages to meet Liam O'Neal , a surviving Mobius agent who helps Sebastian track Lily's whereabouts. As Sebastian follows her trail, he realizes that Lily has been kidnapped by the photographer, who reveals himself as Stephano Valentini, a serial killer who had managed to infiltrate Union. Another surviving Mobius operative, Yukiko Hoffman, explains that Stephano's status as a pyschopath gives him a measure of control over the STEM, granting him his powers. Sebastian tracks down Stephano, who reveals that he had originally kidnapped Lily under orders from another party, but decided to keep her for himself to exploit her powers as the Core. Sebastian kills Stephano, but is shocked to see Myra spirit Lily away.

Sebastian is then approached by Father Theodore Wallace , who attempts to convince Sebastian to join him to seize Lily from Myra since Stephano betrayed him. Sebastian, mistrustful of Theodore, refuses and is banished to a forest outside Union where he meets with Esmeralda Torres . She reveals to him that she, Kidman, Theodore, and Myra had conspired to break Lily out of STEM and destroy Mobius from within. However, the plan went awry when Theodore decided to kidnap Lily for himself. Sebastian goes to check on O'Neal to find a new lead but discovers that he has already been corrupted by Theodore. Sebastian rescues Hoffman from O'Neal and is forced to kill him, though O'Neal tells them how to find Theodore with his dying breath. Sebastian and Esmeralda assault Theodore's realm, but the attack fails when Theodore disables Sebastian by using his own guilt and self doubt against him. Sebastian is visited by a vision of Myra, who assures him that what happened to Lily wasn't his fault and that he should focus on saving her.

When Sebastian wakes up, he finds out that Esmeralda had sacrificed herself to get him to safety. Hoffman tells him that Theodore has erected his stronghold in the center of Union. Both Sebastian and Hoffman assault Theodore's stronghold, but Hoffman is killed after helping Sebastian breach the stronghold. Sebastian then fights his way to and defeats Theodore, who is killed by Myra. However, Myra tells Sebastian to leave the STEM and leave her and Lily alone. Confused, Sebastian follows Myra to a recreation of their home.

Sebastian finally confronts Myra, whose desire to protect Lily has warped her into a monster determined to keep Lily locked in the STEM for her own safety. He reluctantly battles Myra and defeats her, knocking her back to her senses. She tells Sebastian to take Lily out of the STEM, revealing that she is planning to sacrifice herself to take Lily's place as the Core and destroy Mobius by overloading the chips in their brains that keep them connected to the STEM. Meanwhile, in the real world, Kidman is ordered by the Administrator to eliminate Sebastian. She disobeys him and helps Sebastian and Lily escape the STEM while Myra enacts her plan, killing The Administrator and all Mobius operatives. Now free from Mobius, Sebastian, Lily, and Kidman leave the facility.

In a post-credits scene, Sebastian parts ways with Kidman and goes off to live a new life with Lily. Elsewhere, an abandoned STEM terminal begins activating.

Gameplay [ ]

Gameplay in The Evil Within 2 is much streamlined from the clumsy and uncomfortable mechanics of the first game. For starters, movement is greatly smoothed out, allowing Sebastian to better maneuver his surroundings either during combat or when sneaking with greater finesse. The cover mechanics from the Kidman DLCs from the first game have been implemented into this game as well, which allows Sebastian to brace against covers and even peek out at enemies and rounding corners to get away from them with ease. Gunplay is also improved as well, with a nearly tripled amount of unique firearm types compared to the first game.

Partially eschewing the linear design of the first game, The Evil Within 2 consists of several hubworlds that comprise the townscape of Union with rather great freedom, giving him much more options to go about completing his objectives while allowing for more creative opportunities with the placement of collectibles and side stories. As well as this, several side missions can be given by NPC's which will grant the player resources and even weapons for completing them.

Green Gel returns, serving the same purpose as the first game to upgrade Sebastian's stats such as movement speed, stamina maximum health and resistance to damage, as well as being able to grant new abilites such as slow down time while shooting, stealth attack from cover, and give him a chance to automatically dodge certain attacks. However it can no longer be used to upgrade weapons, instead, weapons parts can be collected to and spent to increase weapons' Firepower, Rate of Fire, Capacity and Reload Speed.

The crafting of crossbow ammunition has been expanded upon from the first game, to include crafting of all ammunition types. Each type of ammo needs specific resources. Ammo can be crafted at work benches, or in the field for a higher resource cost.

First Person Mode [ ]

TEW_2_FPP

The Evil Within 2 in first-person

An additional feature of The Evil Within 2 is the ability to play the game in a complete first-person perspective. Originally added to the game engine as a one-time gimmick in Chapter 4, the mode was accessible via a  console command  and proved popular among players. As a result of this, Tango Gameworks have officially included the option to the game via Update 1.04, with additional tweaks to weapon animations and Stealth Kill prompts to address the noted flaws encountered prior to the patch.

First-person mode can be toggled on and off in the Options menu. Perspective change will take place midway through the first chapter, and the game will occasionally switch to third-person during scripted segments, but otherwise the first-person experience will be near-seamless.

Development [ ]

The development process of The Evil Within 2 began almost immediately following the release of The Executioner DLC for the first installment. Following several complaints about the first game's overly complicated story and ambitious direction, series creator Shinji Mikami handed over the next game's creative development to John Johanas, who was described by him as a person with "a lot of talent" [1] . Mikami himself remained as project supervisor and consultant. The game's script was written by Syoji Ishimine and Trent Haaga, who opted to go with a more psychological approach to the story rather than the predominant shock value of the first, so as to provide players with a more logical and easier to digest plot.

The 2.5:1 aspect ratio featured in the first game was removed due to the mixed response this design choice had received upon its release, even though the team liked it [2] . It was, however, included in the final release as an unlockable setting.

Unlike its predecessor, which ran on id Software's id Tech 5 engine, The Evil Within 2 runs on the STEM engine, an offshoot of id Tech that was custom developed by Tango Gameworks for the game [3] .

TEW2 Last Chance pack

Similar to the first installment of the series, The Evil Within 2 offers additional content to players who pre-purchase the game prior to its official release. Known as the Last Chance Pack , this DLC confers additional items to players starting a new game to give them a leg up in surviving the many horrors of the Union .

The Last Chance Pack contains the following:

  • The Burst Handgun
  • 1 First-Aid Kit
  • 1500 Crafting parts

The following content are also included in the pack but not advertised in the pre-order blurb:

Green Gel

  • 1 High-grade Crafting part
  • 100 Gunpowder

The content of the Last Chance Pack are granted at the start of Chapter 3 when starting a new game. Starting the game again on New Game+ does not give additional copies of the items.

Downloadable Content [ ]

As of current, no additional downloadable content have been planned for The Evil Within 2 .

Reception [ ]

The review aggregator website Metacritic gave the PC version of The Evil Within 2 a 81/100 rating, denoting "generally favorable reviews". According to aggregate scores, the Xbox One port of the game is considered to be the best, sitting at a 82/100 score, while the PlayStation 4 release is regarded as the worst (76/100) due to a multitude of bugs and less-than-optimal optimisation compared to the other versions. Regardless, The Evil Within 2 was considered a commercial success and was nominated for several 2017 Game of the Year awards [4] .

The Evil Within 2 received a much more favorable opinion from critics than its predecessor, with praises aimed at its much more balanced ratio between gameplay and narrative. The departure from the first installment's chapter-based storytelling was noted to have been a major improvement, and the game's open-world design, while not received as well, was lauded for the many interesting narrative opportunities it creates.

Gallery [ ]

The burning newspaper in the intro containing the early version of the original script.

  • Unlike the first game, fire no longer serves as a weakness for enemies, however it rather ironically has become a signature of one of the games main antagonists, as well as being used psychologically against Sebastian himself.
  • The burning newspaper at the beginning of the game is seemingly based on what appears to be an early version of the original script for The Evil Within , with mentions of Sebastian obtaining his knife from a corpse and a chainsaw-wielding enemy .

Torres's Journal

evil within 2 who is the ghost lady

Chapter 11 starts in Torres's safe house. Loot everything you can from the area. There's a Mobius supply box with a freeze bolt inside, which will get you the ability to craft them on your own, so make sure you search thorougly. There is a high grade weapon parts on a shelf in the room with the mirror to Sebastians room. Grab Torres's Journal from the table in the back of the room, then go through the open door in the back of the room and into The Marrow using the terminal in the back room.

Once you get inside the marrow, exit the room you're in, then go down the hall, up the stairs and around the corner to your right. You'll find door CE-C03. To the left of it is a fuse box. Flip all four switches to open the door and proceed through.

evil within 2 who is the ghost lady

Once you grab the slide, follow the wall markings for Exit D5 to find Hoffman's safe house. On the way there, around a corner inside a small room, you will find a fallen Mobius operative laying against the wall. Take the syringe from the body if you need it and then grab onto the cart opposite of that and pull it out. Duck through and you will find a Mobius supply crate with some goodies inside and then a filing cabinet on the opposite wall. Check it for more stuff and then head back into the hallway and continue to the door at the end, which puts you back into Hoffman's safe house. When you arrive in Hoffman's safe house, you'll find she isn't there, but a resonance in her place. Play the resonance to discover Hoffman has left to meet O'Neal in the restricted area of The Marrow.

Exit through the door labeled "Restricted Area" in Hoffman's safe house, then run down the hallway until you find and loot the corpse near the elevator. In the room directly across from the corpse is another batch of high grade weapon parts, however to get away with it alive, you have to contend with two Lost playing dead in the corners. Do this and then take the elevator down to reach the Restricted Labs . Go through the metal detectors and take a left to find a small room containing a mirror and a computer. Examine the computer to find a file. Exit the room and make a left, then go through the door to enter a white hallway. Go through the white hallway and through the door at the end of it. The next room is full of tanks, but there isn't anything to do with them. Go through to the back of the room and exit to find another resonance that will show Hoffman going through a door that requires a Unity Cerebal Chip to enter.

Turn to your right and walk along the outer peremiter of the area until you reach some glass windows. You will see a Lost attempting to work on advancing its movie career. Take it out and then look through the windows (in which case this area is Lab 1 ) to see a jar of Red Gel laying on one of the pull out trays where a body is laying. Go through the doorway labeled "Lab 1" and go through the door into the next room and make it yours!

Next, go back out to the main area and look around to find a door with a fuse box next to it across the room opposite the red door. Shoot the fuse box with an electric bolt to open the door half way. Crawl under the door to find a room with mine cart tracks lining the floor. At the end of the tracks is a pit, with an office on the right.

Examine the pit, then enter the office and examine the computer to find a file. When you go to exit the area, Sebastian will once again encounter The Anima. The Anima is impervious to all attacks and will kill you instantly if it finds you. Sneak around it using rubble and columns as cover.

Take the stairs down, where The Anima will follow you. Take the path to the right to cause a body tray to eject from the wall, blocking your path. When this happens, The Anima will rearrange the items in the room, opening a new path for you to take.

evil within 2 who is the ghost lady

Crawl through the center of the room, near where The Anima is patrolling. As long as you remain behind cover, it shouldn't see you. Look to your left to find a small gap between a pillar you can crawl through. Once you've made it to the other side, move forward until another body tray ejects from the wall.

Go around the pillar to get around the body trays, which will cause The Anima to rearrange the room again. From there, you should see a clear path to the exit. At this point you can stand and run, as The Anima won't be able to catch up in time. Get through to double doors to escape, after which you'll be returned to the office outside the pit.

Slide And Files

After your encounter with The Anima, make your way down the hallway and go into the room on your right. Search the room to find the report on a desk.

Next, go across the hall to the room on the opposite side to find the letter on a gurney.

Files on the First Floor

Before you go upstairs, go around the staircase to your right to find Lab 1. Go through the doors in the back of the lab to find to find Report: Irregularity Studies on a gurney and also a bottle of red gel laying next to a corpse sticking out on a tray from the wall.

Once you have both files , make your way back to the staircase near the back of the room and go upstairs. At the top of the stairs, turn left and go around the corner. Enter the door marked "2" to enter Lab 2 where you will find a resonance point. Tune into the resonance point, then search the corpse on the floor nearby to find a Medical Pouch . Once you're done in Lab 2, exit and turn right. Continue until you hit the wall, then turn left. You'll see a door marked "3", indicating it leads to Lab 3. Before going through door number three, turn around and look up into the hanging lights dangling from the ceiling. Right next to you is one with a small statue standing on it. Clear this upper area of Lost and then take down the statue with a bullet from your handgun. Return to the lower floor directly below and go through the small section where the open curtains are and look to the middle of the floor to find the locker key.

evil within 2 who is the ghost lady

After that is done, go back up to Lab 3 and pass through the room full of corpses on gurneys and into the next room where you'll find a dead Mobius operative on a table. Interact with the keypad at the end of table and enter the code 0128 to remove the chip from the operative's brain.

Computer File - Operative Case

As soon as you have the chip, the power will go out. Exit the lab and make a left, then follow the wall to the other side of the room. Be careful as you pass Lab 2, as a Lost will jump out at you. Keep following along the wall until you reach the stairs, then go down.

Be careful as the first floor is now overrun with Lost, including one of the more dangerous, acid-spitting variety. Set traps with your explosive bolts and lure the acid-spitter to them to make short work of it, then head to the door and wait for it to open as it scans the chip.

evil within 2 who is the ghost lady

Take the items in the duffle bag in the next room and keep going until you find a door marked with a four. a short cutscene will play before you find yourself in a fight with the flamethrower enemy from before, who is revealed to be O'Neal.

evil within 2 who is the ghost lady

The fight with O'Neal is one of the toughest in the game. O'Neal's flamethrower covers a large area in a tight space, and his flames stay lit. Use the lever in the back of the room to activate the sprinklers and put out the flames periodically to give you room to move.

Fighting O'Neal

If you have freeze bolts, use them to stop O'Neal in his tracks and get a free shot with another weapon to do big damage. When O'Neal reaches half of his life, he'll remove his mask and start charging you. Be careful to avoid this attack as it does big damage.

evil within 2 who is the ghost lady

Once you've taken O'Neal out, grab the Broken Flamethrower from his dead body, then head into lab four and view the memory fragment, and grab any other items in the room, like some more high grade weapon parts.

Use the mirror to return to Sebastian's Room if needed.

evil within 2 who is the ghost lady

Go through to the next room to find what appears to be a Stable Field Emitter. Sebastian will call Torres over and Torres will tell you she is almost ready. Take a moment once you regain control of Sebastian and look directly behind the field emitter to find another small statue. Smash it for a key.

evil within 2 who is the ghost lady

After you do that, talk to Hoffman first for a list of selective dialogue and then talk to Torres. When you are finished, tell Torres to arm the bombs, which will destroy the device and complete the chapter.

The Evil Within 2: Every Boss Ranked & How To Beat Them

From the Matriarch to Anima, The Evil Within 2 has its fair share of boss fights. Here's how each ranks in difficulty and how to beat them.

The Evil Within games are known for their exciting monster design, adding an exciting twist to the horror game genre. The second installment of this franchise polishes the first game's formula. It improves the survival horror setup's vital features, like stealth mechanics, that allow you to pass through Evil Within bosses using stealthy moves.

RELATED:  10 Horror Games To Play If You Like The Evil Within 2

Whether you're a long-time player or someone who just discovered this game series, boss fights are always something to look forward to, but they can discourage even the best of players. To make things easier for you, here's a ranking of all the Evil Within bosses you'll encounter during the second game and where their weak spots are.

Updated June 8, 2021, by Miguel Amaro: Recently, news broke that The Evil Within IP was re-registered for continued use. While this doesn't officially mean anything, it leads to speculation that the franchise could be expanded with a third game. After all, it's been roughly five years since The Evil Within 2 was released, so a third installment makes sense when you look at the timeline. Either way, while we wait for any update on the matter, let's look at the terrifying Evil Within bosses the second game brought to this universe and how to deal with them.

Liam O'Neal

Liam isn't a bad guy, just kind of a coward. Still, he aids Sebastian via radio. At some point during the game, Liam is transformed into a Harbinger by Father Theodore, and Sebastian will have to face him.

This boss behaves a lot like typical Harbinger, which means he'll use his flamethrower all he can. The best you can do is aim for the head or stun him by blowing out the tank on Liam's back . You can also try and take him down with stealth attacks (if you have the patience for that). After Liam is defeated, you'll get his flamethrower. While it is broken, you can repair it to gain access to one of the most powerful weapons in the game.

Effigy is a mini-boss Myra will summon during chapter 15 . This one looks like two humanoid bodies merged (and fused with a telephone post for some reason). However, that same post gives Effigy its most dangerous feature — this monster can manipulate the post's wires and harness its electrical power to use against its enemies.

RELATED:  The Evil Within On Game Pass PC Is Essentially A Remastered Version

This boss has several attacks it will use against you. It can crush Sebastian with its hands or create a temporary area of effect that inflicts electrical damage. It can also jump towards you, knocking you down.

However, like all the Evil Within bosses, Effigy has a weak spot. Just go ahead and aim for the glowing part that's in the monster's midsection . On the same note, this particular creature is weak against freeze or explosive Warden Bolts (however, it's better to use these as traps rather than firing them directly to the monster).

Anima is as mysterious as she is terrifying. She seems to roam the streets looking for people to attack, although she seems especially interested in Sebastian. You'll notice Anima is close because it gets cold and fog starts to appear — she also sings in that "non-hostile" mode, so you can use her voice to ascertain how far she is from you.

While playing The Evil Within 2 , you'll encounter Anima three set times:

1. During chapter 3 , appearing behind Sebastian when he tries to leave the house at 336 Cedar Avenue.

2. During chapter 7 in the Juke Diner.

3. In chapter 11 , when she ambushes Sebastian while he is trying to escape from the Restricted Labs of the Marrow.

While those are the three scripted moments in which you'll see this creature, players can also encounter Anima randomly as they explore around (however, after chapter 11, she'll be nowhere to be found). Either way, if you want to avoid her every time, make sure to study her movement pattern, listen to her humming, and try not to break any glass as this will expose your location.

The Watcher

This creature looks like a floating skull covered in a white goo similar to wax. While that might sound silly, you shouldn't underestimate this boss as the slimy substance covering him slows down your character.

Sebastian will first encounter The Watcher in chapter 6 and then briefly in chapter 8 . During its boss fight, you'll have two options, either try to sneak past it or shoot your shot and kill it. The stealthy route will be really difficult as this boss slows you down and can summon hands anywhere. Still, it will save you tons of ammo.

If you want to attack this creature, go for the weak spots , like its red eyes . While doing so, try to avoid stepping on the goo and dodge The Watcher's hands or spit attacks. Keep repeating this process of hitting the eyes and avoid the rest until the boss is defeated.

As terrifying as Guardian looks, it has a sad back story. This tall creature was created from the mutilated pieces of the women Stefano murdered. That's why it looks like a bunch of heads glued together. If that isn't scary enough for you, this boss' right arm has a large buzzsaw blade ready to tear you apart.

You'll encounter this type of creature three times in the game, during chapters 2, 5, and 7 . This enemy doesn't have a particular weak point, so to defeat this boss, use shock bolts since the Guardian has a low tolerance to their effect. A fully upgraded explosive bolt could also do the trick.

RELATED:  The Evil Within 2: How To Obtain Every Weapon

Moreover, go for weapons like Sawed-Off Shotgun and the Sniper Rifle since those two deal significant damage to the Guardian's heads. Finally, one of the best ways to fight against this one is to use the environment to your advantage . For example, you can lure the Guardian into a gasoline puddle and then shoot at it to catch the monster on fire. You could also use oil barrel traps and camera stasis traps to slow down the creature and shoot at its heads.

Obscura has the grace of a ballerina, a zombie's skin, and a camera in place of its head. You'll face this monster during chapter 5 and chapter 7 — Stefano created her, and it's believed to be his ultimate masterpiece.

This creature attacks with its camera head and will stun Sebastian with her flash. She can also stop time, stopping the 90-second countdown from the Emitter during chapter 5.

The first time you fight Obscura, don't try to kill it — your job here is to let the countdown get to zero . To fight Obscura's time-stopping abilities, go for her weak spot, the camera . The second time you fight her, you can either choose to sneak past her or go ahead and try to kill her, which will grant the player 7000 Green Gels.

Theodore Wallace

Theodore is the game's main antagonist, so you better bet his boss fight will be a tough one. This particular enemy won't fight you directly; instead, Theodore will summon three Evil Within bosses from the previous game — a fitting strategy for a cult leader.

This fight will happen during chapter 14 , so brace yourself. The first boss that'll come back is The Sadist , a huge man covered in blood wielding a large chainsaw as his main weapon. Like the first game, you must outrun this boss and not get caught in its one-hit kill.

RELATED:  The Evil Within 2: The 9 Best Side Missions (& Where To Start Them)

Next up is The Keeper , a tall humanoid-like man that has a safe for a head. His chosen weapon is a meat tenderizer, which he'll use to... well, tenderize you in a most violent manner. This enemy relies on strong blows, so it's wise to use long-range weapons against him . Also, The Keeper bangs on its head whenever he spots Sebastian, take that as a cue that he's about to attack. Keep in mind that this phase of the boss fight will have you fighting not one but three Keepers.

Finally, it's Laura 's time to shine. She will gracefully come out of the Keeper's safe-head, and the final phase of the boss fight will begin. To eliminate this spider-lady, you must open the valves to power up the incinerator . However, this takes time, so in the meantime, use freeze bolts to slow down the monster .

Stefano Valentini

Stefano is a twisted person, corrupted by his obsession with finding beauty in death. He was once a war photographer who lost an eye but gained a new fascination with killing people and converting them into "art."

While Stefano appears throughout the game, his boss fight takes place during chapter 8 . He has numerous attacks he can use against Sebastian, like:

  • Teleportation
  • Knife-throwing attack
  • Dash attack
  • Explosives attack

There are a few tricks when it comes to defeating him. For example, paying attention to what he is saying will help you a lot. It turns out Stefano's quotes will give you a clue about what kind of attack he will perform.

While Stefano's boss fight is challenging enough on its own, this boss also has a humongous sub-boss aiding him during battle. Meet The Aperture, a gigantic flying creature created by Stefano. This one looks like someone inserted a human eye inside a camera lens and then attached tentacles all around it. This makes sense, considering that this enemy represents the eye Stefano Valentini lost during his time as a wartime journalist.

RELATED:  The Best Third-Person Survival Horror Games

You'll encounter this monster several times during chapters 5 to 7 , and luckily, it only has one type of attack : attacking your character with its tentacles, smashing him in the process. To avoid being kill by Aperture, use walls to hide from its line of sight.

This one is the final boss in the game — she looks human enough, but her body and face are very deformed. You'll encounter the Matriarch during chapter 16 , and while the fight consists of four phases, each one has the same objective: shoot the glowing parts.

The Matriarch's weak spot is her abdomen (which will glow an orange shade ). Find opportunities to shoot this part of her body; however, she is aware of her weakness, so she will try to cover up this part of her body from time to time.

This time around, the weak spot is located in her shoulder blades . The problem? These parts are hidden and will only be accessible after the Matriarch performs a fist slam attack . Not only that, but during this phase, the boss will spawn spiderlings to make things harder for you; still, if you manage to kill the creatures, they will drop resources.

Phase Three

You'll know you've reached phase three because one of the Matriarch's severed arms will grab your character . You'll have to shoot the glowing spot at the end of the limb. This feels more like a quick-time event than a phase in a boss fight but don't worry: the combat isn't over.

Finally, during phase four, you'll have to try and shoot the remaining arm while trying not to get smashed by the new limb this boss grew out of her body or getting grab by one of the gooey hands the appear from the floor. Once the Matriarch falls to the ground, just h it the final weak spot located in her mouth .

Use a long-range weapon, like an upgraded Assault Rifle, for this fight and go for the weak spots (the stomach, the two shoulders, and the mouth) .
