middle east journal of scientific research

The set of journals have been ranked according to their SJR and divided into four equal groups, four quartiles. Q1 (green) comprises the quarter of the journals with the highest values, Q2 (yellow) the second highest values, Q3 (orange) the third highest values and Q4 (red) the lowest values.

The SJR is a size-independent prestige indicator that ranks journals by their 'average prestige per article'. It is based on the idea that 'all citations are not created equal'. SJR is a measure of scientific influence of journals that accounts for both the number of citations received by a journal and the importance or prestige of the journals where such citations come from It measures the scientific influence of the average article in a journal, it expresses how central to the global scientific discussion an average article of the journal is.

Evolution of the number of published documents. All types of documents are considered, including citable and non citable documents.

This indicator counts the number of citations received by documents from a journal and divides them by the total number of documents published in that journal. The chart shows the evolution of the average number of times documents published in a journal in the past two, three and four years have been cited in the current year. The two years line is equivalent to journal impact factor ™ (Thomson Reuters) metric.

Evolution of the total number of citations and journal's self-citations received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. Journal Self-citation is defined as the number of citation from a journal citing article to articles published by the same journal.

Evolution of the number of total citation per document and external citation per document (i.e. journal self-citations removed) received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. External citations are calculated by subtracting the number of self-citations from the total number of citations received by the journal’s documents.

International Collaboration accounts for the articles that have been produced by researchers from several countries. The chart shows the ratio of a journal's documents signed by researchers from more than one country; that is including more than one country address.

Not every article in a journal is considered primary research and therefore "citable", this chart shows the ratio of a journal's articles including substantial research (research articles, conference papers and reviews) in three year windows vs. those documents other than research articles, reviews and conference papers.

Ratio of a journal's items, grouped in three years windows, that have been cited at least once vs. those not cited during the following year.

Evolution of the percentage of female authors.

Evolution of the number of documents cited by public policy documents according to Overton database.

Evoution of the number of documents related to Sustainable Development Goals defined by United Nations. Available from 2018 onwards.

Ashabiyah Theory of Ibn Khaldun: An Alternative Perspective for Studying the Indonesian Muslim Society

Profile image of Achmad Zainal Arifin

Al-A'raf : Jurnal Pemikiran Islam dan Filsafat

Ibn Khaldun was popularly known as a Muslim intellectual since the West discovered his work, Muqaddimah. Through this work, he became the only Muslim scientist whose methods and knowledge basis were accepted by the West. Ibn Khaldun became popular with several names, such as Sociologist, Economist, and the founder of social science. However, only few attempts use Ibn Khaldun's perspective as an analytical tool in the discipline of sociology. In Indonesia, the study of the sociology of religion often refers to the big names of sociologists born from the West socio-historical context. Ibn Khladun theory of Al-Umran and Ashabiyah has offered a big concept about civilization, culture, and communal ties that are generated through his research on Muslim society as its focused object. This results of this study reveal that the Ashabiyah theory can be used as an alternative perspective in the study of the sociology of religion, especially to analyze the socio-religious phenomena of the ...

Debates about the usability of the concept of ‘secularity’ in academic research are not merely theoretical. Standpoints are also politically informed and arguments are sometimes emotionally charged. To some, merely using the term ‘secularity’ seems to inflict violence upon certain objects of research or even upon themselves. Others object to applying the concept beyond a particular arrangement of secularity, lest that defense-worthy arrangement be undermined. Taking a step back, however, the actual hermeneutical problem and historical question still seems rather clearly to be this: is it possible to uncouple the link between secularism as a political regime and secularity as an analytical concept with broader historical purchase? In this paper, I argue that the basic approach of Multiple Secularities is indeed the commendable way forward, but could be refined and improved, also by learning from the valid points of its critical alternatives. Thus, this paper aspires to shed light on two basic questions, namely, how to take ‘secularity’ beyond the modern West, and, as a logical prior, why take ‘secularity’ beyond the modern West in the first place?

Economists have generally maintained a rigorous separation between positive and normative economics. In the Muslim world, however, concerted attempts have been made to relate moral conduct to economic institutions and practices. Demands for an alternative theory and practice of development to both modernization and Marxist theories had led to the rise of Islamic economics. But while Islamic economic thinking presents an ideal of development that is based on an Islamic philosophy of life, it is beset by a number of problems which make it difficult to be considered as an alternative to modernist discourse as far as empirical theory is concerned. As such. so-called Islamic economics cannot be considered as presenting a counter-modernist and alternative development theory. As an ethical theory of development Islam offers an alternative to modernization. dependency. and neo-Marxist theories. However.as an empirical theory. so called Islamic economic theory remains within the fold of Western modernist discourse in terms of its theoretical concerns and methodology. This chapter provides a theoretical critique and suggests an exemplar for a political economy approach for the Muslim world.

The growing interest in the 14 th ‐century Muslim scholar Ibn Khaldun's ideas and his essentially historical‐sociological perspective implies a promise of a critical appraisal of the Eurocentric nature of the classical and contemporary social theory. An important role is played in this endeavor by Syed Farid Alatas whose work has been important not only in terms of further introducing Ibn Khaldun's theory to the Western audience but also making it more relevant to the contemporary theoretical debates and historical sociology. This article reviews Alatas' work on Ibn Khaldun with a view to demonstrate that his contributions to the Khaldunian studies today take at least five different forms: a critical examination of Ibn Khaldun's theory in general, and reconstruction of it as a theory of the state, and of religious revival in particular; demonstrating its significance for the modern social sciences; its application to a number of premodern and modern empirical cases; and a theoretical integration of his model with some modern Western theories, which is a rare occurrence in both Khaldunian studies and sociology in general.

The Qur’anic Ethos stresses the importance of an inquisitive mindset. The aim of this paper is to show the depth of theoretical information and practical advice the Qur’an provides, in regards to fostering and nurturing an inquisitive Mindset. This article will elaborate on the Qur’anic teachings on inquisitiveness. There are more than one thousand two hundred questions in the Qur’an, which are analysed to examine their contribution to fostering inquisitive thinking. The multiple characteristics of an inquisitive mindset are explained by recourse to several prominent classical exegetists. The Qur’anic blueprint for inquisitive learning is sketched briefly with an excursion into the etiquettes of inquisitiveness. A practical application of the theoretical discussion of inquisitiveness is provided in the context of recovering the Khaldūnian Legacy in sociology. The article concludes that fostering inquisitiveness is of the utmost importance, especially in our (post) modern times. It i...

Christian students' involvement in the school Islamic programs such as wearing Muslim clothing, participating in the seven-minute Islamic sermon, and joining Islamic classes are often considered a compliance attitude. Instead, it is a process of self-adaptation because they attend a school within a Muslim majority environment. Moreover, this camouflage represents their resistance to the school rules. This article discusses how Christian students in two state schools in Padang behave in the framework of Islamic customs. Based on the theories of Jean Baudrillard’s simulacra and James C. Scott’s resistance, the results of this study show that Christian students in two state schools in Padang tend to be obedient and interested in Islamic practices. For instance, they imitate the way Muslim students dress so that they look similar to Muslim students. This attitude pleases their Muslim teachers and fellow students. In addition, Minang people in their neighborhood also amaze and alway...

Studies on Ahmadiyah have been very extensive both in their focuses and approaches. However, few scholars consider local culture as an important means of the Ahmadiyya movement. This study focuses on the use of local culture in the form of uga in the Sundanese Ahmadiyya tradition. Uga is an oral tradition of ancestor mystical prophecy in Sunda on the coming of an important change in a situation of crisis. This is an ethnographic study of the Sundanese uga among Ahmadiyya followers in Kuningan, Tasikmalaya, and Bandung. The uga of Ahmadiyya is then analyzed using an interpretive approach. This study shows that there are at least six ugas of Ahmadiyya in Bandung, Garut, Singaparna, Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, and Manislor Kuningan. These ugas represent a symbolic meeting point between the expectations of Sundanese on the change of a situation with the messianic beliefs in Ahmadiyya. Ugas can shape the experience, identity and strengthen the roots of mystical ideology of Ahmadiyya in Sundan...

Modernity refers to the end result of the process of modernization. It is the condition that a society attains after having gone through specific patterns of social and economic change which began in Western Europe in the eighteenth century and which has been spreading throughout the rest of the world. The process of modernization refers to the introduction of modern scientific knowledge to increasing aspects of human life, first of all in Western civilization, then to non-Western societies, by different means and groups, with the final aim of achieving a better life as defined by the society concerned (Alatas, S.H. 1972, p. 22). The traits of modernization include the rationalization of economic and political life, rapid urbanization, industrialization, differentiation in the social structure, and greater popular involvement in public affairs. If we understand these traits as constituting the modern condition, then modernism would refer to the ideology, attitude or mentality that subordinates the traditional to the modern.

This study concentrates on a renowned Muslim figure, namely Ibn Khaldun. Most studies on Ibn Khaldun and Muqaddimah were accomplished by many scholars, in numerous fields, such as History, Politics, and Sociology. Yet, only a few works which focused on Ibn Khaldun’s study of other religions. In this respect, this study is prepared to explore and analyse Ibn Khaldun’s study of other religions in his Muqaddimah. Through the use of qualitative research design, which utilizes content analysis method on Muqaddimah, this study aims to fulfill the following research objectives. First, to delineate the brief history and development of the Muslim and Western study of religions. Second, to discuss the intellectual background of Ibn Khaldun and his Muqaddimah in relation to his study of other religions. Third, to describe Ibn Khaldun’s views on religion, which could be discerned from his study of cumrān and its relation to the study of religions. Fourth, to identify and explore Ibn Khaldun’s exposition and clarification on religions other than Islam in his Muqaddimah, such as Judaism, Christianity, Sabeanism and Magianism. The findings show that Ibn Khaldun’s conception of religion is related to his cumrān study of history, while his methodology of study of religions is found as subpart of his methodology of Muqaddimah writing. In terms of collecting religious information, Ibn Khaldun resorts to his critical observation approach and various textual sources. Whereas in presenting religious information, Ibn Khaldun utilizes three main approaches, namely descriptive, comparative and critical. With regards to Ibn Khaldun’s views on religion, this study found that they are described in four main points, namely religion and cAṣabiyyah, religion and society, religion and leadership; and finally, religion and happiness. Next, with regards to Ibn Khaldun’s study of other religions, this study found that they are comprised of eleven specific themes, including topics of interreligious discussions. Though Ibn Khaldun’s study of other religions does not comprise a complete treatment in the study of religions, yet, this study contributes a new dimension of study to the host of existing literatures on Khaldunian studies.
