How to write 10,000 words a day

One of the most popular posts on the Thesis Whisperer is How to write 1000 words a day and not go bat shit crazy . Last year a Twitter follower brought to my attention a post called How I went from writing 2000 words to 10,000 words a day by the fiction writer Rachel Aaron.

I did a double take.

Can you really write 10,000 words a day? Well, Rachel says she can, with three conditions:

1) Know what you are going to write before you write it 2) Set aside a protected time to write, and 3) Feel enthusiastic about what you are writing

I read the post with interest. Much of what Rachel did conformed with what I suggest in my earlier post, but I couldn’t bring myself to really believe Rachel’s productivity claims. To regularly write 10,000 words: It’s the dream, right? Imagine if you could reliably write 10,000 words a day, how long would it take to finish your thesis… A week? How about a journal paper – a day?

Impossible!

Or so I thought.

The Thesis Bootcamp formula was developed by Liam Connell and Peta Freestone of the University of Melbourne. Thesis Bootcamp (and the veteran’s days which follow) is a total program designed to help late stage PhD students finish their thesis document (In some countries this document is called the ‘dissertation’, but I will use the Australian term ‘thesis’ here). The Thesis Bootcamp concept is simple – put a whole lot of PhD students in a room for a whole weekend and set them the goal of writing 20,000 words each.

Yes – you heard me right.

At every Thesis Bootcamp we have run, at least one student will achieve this goal, and many write many more words than they thought they would. In a previous post Peta Freestone and Liam Connell wrote about the ideas behind Thesis Bootcamp . In this post I want to reflect on Rachel Aaron’s threefold advice and put in the context of thesis writing.

1) Know what you are going to write before you write it

Composing a Thesis requires you to do different types of writing. Some of this writing is ‘generative’ in that it helps you form and articulate ideas by… just writing as much as you can, not as well as you can. It works best when you don’t second-guess yourself too much. The philosophy is ‘make a mess and then clean it up’. Perfectionist writers have a problem doing this, which is why we see so many perfectionists at our Bootcamps.

At Bootcamp we teach our students to focus the generative writing energy to productive effect. An important step in this process is for the student to spend at least a week making a ‘Thesis map’  before they come to Bootcamp. The map is essentially a series of sub-headings which the students use as prompts for composing new text, or re-using existing text.

Students, particularly those in the humanities and arts, tend to agonise over the Thesis document ‘structure’. I think the anxiety stems from the idea that ‘Thesis structure’ is some kind of perfect platonic form they need to discover.

It’s important to realise that structure is made, not found. Thesis structure is strongly influenced by disciplinary precedent and the content of the Thesis itself. A history PhD it might follow a timeline from the past to the present; a science PhD might echo the order of the experiments that have been performed. But multi-disciplinary PhDs, or PhDs in ‘polyglot’ disciplines like education, do not have comfortable traditions. This means you’ll have to make the structure up. Try the following technique:

  • This Thesis contributes to knowledge by…
  • This Thesis is important because…
  • The key research question is….
  • The sub-questions are….
  • Decide how long your Thesis will be. Most universities have a maximum word count. Aim for your Thesis to be at least 2/3 of this total (it’s likely you will write more than this, but this gives you some wriggle room).
  • Make a document with chapter headings and word counts next to them. Include an introduction of 2000 – 3000 words followed by up to seven chapters of equal length and a conclusion of around 4000 – 5000 words.
  • Under the conclusion heading write a rough list of points you think will go in there (hint – these should be answers to the research questions you have posed). Study these closely – have you got data, theories, evidence and arguments to support these conclusions? These concluding points, singularly or in combination, will form the ‘key learnings’ of the Thesis – the knowledge and ideas you want your readers to absorb.
  • Each chapter should have at least one key learning in it, maybe more. Under each chapter heading note the key learnings in the form of a brief synopsis of up to 300 words. This synopsis is like a mini abstract that explains what the rest of the chapter will be about.
  • Then make a list of the material you will include in the chapter as dot points. Don’t worry about the gaps and stuff you haven’t written yet – just make a note of them. These should be short sentences that will act as subheadings
  • Now ask yourself: If, at the end of the chapter, I want the reader to be convinced of the validity of this key learning, what needs to appear first? What comes next? And so on. Rearrange or write new subheadings as you go until you have arranged all the subheadings of the chapter in a way that tells the research story.

Following these steps will help you to create the Thesis map – but it’s important to remember that this is merely an aid to writing, not a plan set in stone. You can change, add and move stuff around as you write.

In our Thesis Bootcamps we ask students to just pick a spot on this map and start writing as fast as they can, not as well as they can. Does this generate perfect thesis ready text? Not necessarily, but many students say that the writing they produce at Bootcamp is clearer than the writing they did before it, when they are worrying over every word. I think the thesis map is a big part of this clarity because it keeps the focus tight.

This organising technique works best for very late stage thesis students, but it can be a way of creating order at any time in your journey and working out what you need to find out or write more about. I’ve made a downloadable cheat sheet which shows you my own Thesis map, generated by the above method so you can make one of your own.

2) Set aside a protected time to write

I’ve written so much about this, so I wont rehash it all here. If you are interested in some techniques and ideas for creating protective writing time, have a look at the following posts:

  • Another way to write 1000 words a day
  • Office or cafe?
  • Shut up and Write!
  • Detox your desk
  • A visit from the procrastination fairy

3) Feel enthusiastic about what you are writing

I think this is the ‘secret sauce’ in the 10,000 words a day recipe. Rachel Aaron did some deep analysis of her productive writing days and compared these to the occasional not-so-productive days. The days Rachel was able to write 10,000+ words were the days she was writing scenes she had been ‘dying to write’ – she called these the ‘candy bar scenes’. Days where she found it hard to muster 5000 words a day she was bored with what she was writing:

This was a duh moment for me, but it also brought up a troubling new problem. If I had scenes that were boring enough that I didn’t want to write them, then there was no way in hell anyone would want to read them. This was my novel, after all. If I didn’t love it, no one would.

In the fiction world the answer to Rachel’s dilemma was simple – make the boring scenes more interesting! Unfortunately in Thesis World this is not always possible. There will always be parts that are functional and unexciting; I call these the ‘dry toast’ sections – you need to do a lot of unproductive chewing before you can swallow.

There’s a term that describes this process in gamer culture – ‘grinding’. Grinding is being forced to perform the same action over and over again before you can ‘level up’ in the game and get more powers / weapons / armour or whatever. The level up is the pay-off.

One of the most genius ideas Liam and Peta incorporated into Bootcamp was the squeezy lego blocks. We give these out for each 5000 words written in a particular colour order: green, blue, red and gold. The blocks clip together to make a little lego ‘wall’ that the students can display at their writing station. When first presented with the idea of the blocks the students laugh, but all too soon, they are typing furiously with single minded purpose – to get the next block. We have a little ceremony every time someone gets a block, clapping them as they walk up to write their name on the board. It’s cheesy, but it works to turn writing from a source of pain to a celebration. So think about how to reward yourself for every 5000 words written.

Up for the challenge? Have a look at the testimonials on our ANU You Tube channel . I’d love to hear about other ways of doing writing marathons and what you think about this kind of ‘binge writing’.

9 Tips for Writing 10,000 Words a Day| Looking to try your hand at writing 10,000 words a day? Click here to read my 9 tips to get your hands flying across the keyboard.

Original photo by Gregory Culmer

I’m here to reassure you that it’s entirely possible, though I’ve never tried writing 10,000 words a day on purpose. It just sort of happens.

The first time I experienced it was in grad school. I had one semester to complete my graduate thesis project, and your girl did it. But that meant that I was writing a novel in two and a half months, and then submitting it to my committee so they could read it, and then defending it.

That was not an ideal situation, but I did it while working two jobs, and I finished on time. It’s also worth noting that I have no recollection of what’s in that novel.

The next time I did it was while I was working as a ghostwriter at a terrible publishing company. On Fridays, we had to submit the work we’d done to our boss, and it never failed that by Fridays, there had been too many meetings and phone calls during the week to actually write. So I’d show up on Friday mornings, a 20-ounce travel mug of coffee in my hand and an energy drink in my purse, and I’d try to write the required 6,000 words I needed on each of the projects I was working on at the time.

That was a really taxing time, and I definitely gained 60 pounds while working there because all I did was sit, chug caffeine, and go eat fried foods at lunch. Also, the environment was incredibly toxic, so I got really good at producing cortisol.

And more recently, I did it while staying at St. Francis of the Woods on my solo writing retreat . It was so nice to get away and just sit down and let my hands fly across the keyboard. And before I knew it, I was over 11,000 words. It was a good writing night.

So, all of this is to say that I have a few tips to help you when it comes to writing 10,000 words a day. Whether you’re backed into a corner with deadlines, or have some time to just enjoy the writing process, these 9 tips are crucial for success when it comes to writing 10,000 words a day.

Writing 10,000 Words a Day

001: make an outline..

I’m sorry, pantsers. This one might sting a little.

The thing about writing a significant amount in a day is that you have to know where your story is going. You don’t have to know every last detail or bit of dialog, but generally, you have to know all the major plot points that get you to the end.

The reason you need to know this is so you don’t waste time trying to figure out what to write next.

Most of these tips are ways to help you keep your brain focused and your hands flying across your keyboard. If you don’t have an outline, you really can’t do either of those things.

I’m not saying that you have to give up the joy of writing and surprising yourself with the story that emerges. I am saying that you have to know the general direction of the story, and let it flow.

My outlines aren’t very detailed. It’s usually a set of bullet points that are maybe one or two sentences. But this is enough to keep me going to the next point.

And before you ask, yes. You can be more detailed if you want. That will actually make it easier.

The key here is to have the outline available, and to read it before you start each writing sprint so you know what you need to do as you go.

002: You have to like what you’re writing.

This is something I try to explain to my students every single, stinking semester. If you hate the topic you’ve chosen, it’s like gargling broken glass to write about it.

So if you find that you’re stuck just because you hate the thing you’re writing and you’ve always hated it, it’s time to change. Notice I said “always hated it.” There are times in the writing process where you will hate story ideas you once loved. That’s because writing a novel is like shooting your body out into space and no one can save you. Naturally, there are parts of that you wouldn’t enjoy.

But as long as you remember that initial love and excitement, it’s enough to keep you going.

(This isn’t anything like shooting your body out into space. I think I just imagined someone shooting themselves out of a cannon past Pluto, and somehow their dedication to the mission sustained them and they didn’t burn out from the force of being shot out of the atmosphere. If it works like that, then yeah. This metaphor works.)

So if you’re finding that writing 1,000 words seems impossible, and the idea of writing 10,000 words is just outright insane, it could be that you don’t feel that connection to your story. And that’s okay. Because now, you get to start over with something you do like.

003: Practice.

As an instructor, one thing I see again and again is students assuming they can sit down and write a whole paper in a night. Some of them can, and some of them can’t.

The ones who can are the ones who have built up their writing muscles. No, not actual muscles. In fact, I would argue there are a lot of us writers out there who are really soft and supple in places where you’d expect a muscle to be. No, we’re not weak. We’re just really good at sitting at a desk, which is something more active and strong folks can’t do. SO THERE. WE’VE BEAT YOU AT SOMETHING.

The writing muscle is actually just the ability to sit down with your butt in the chair and your hands on the keyboard. It’s what keeps your head in the game and enables you to keep cranking out words.

If you haven’t practiced sitting down and writing for long stretches of time, writing 10,000 words out of the blue isn’t going to happen.

Think of it like this. You wouldn’t run a marathon without training, would you? Then why would you do a writing marathon without training?

Luckily for you, writing marathon training has way less running than marathon training. And all you have to do is carve some time out to write as often as possible, and then you’ll be able to pull a 10,000 word writing marathon.

Don’t forget to check out my posts on building a writing habit , or good writing routines . These will definitely help you build up those writing muscles.

004: Write, don’t edit.

I cannot emphasize this enough, and I feel like a broken record.

When you’re writing, you’re writing. When you edit, you edit. You can’t do both at the same time.

I talked about this in my post about how to write fast , but it should be repeated until everyone chants it like those damn sheep in Animal Farm with their “four legs good, two legs bad.”

The part of your brain that generates ideas and lets them flow is different than the part of your brain that’s critical and knows how to change stuff. I think. I don’t know. I’m not a neuroscientist. What I do know is that if you keep going back over what you’ve written, you’re not allowing yourself to get in that creative state of flow. And you’re not making any progress because you don’t have the necessary perspective.

You can edit sentence by sentence until you’re blue in the face. But one sentence is a drop in your novel bucket. And honestly, one sentence is fairly meaningless unless you look at it in the context of other sentences that surround it. And I would argue you should edit with that context in mind. So if one sentence is bad, it doesn’t necessarily become great when you read the next sentence. But it does have more meaning, and could potentially change the way you edit that bad sentence.

Maybe this is all true, or maybe I’m full of shit. Either way, let your writing brain write and your editing brain edit, and don’t let the two of them know that they’re sharing an apartment inside your skull like the Odd Couple.

005: Set a timer and sprint!

I love writing sprints. Everyone should do them.

A writing sprint is simply where you set a timer for any amount of time (I recommend 15 or 20 minutes) and write that whole time. You’re also pushing yourself to write a little faster.

I started experimenting with these in grad school when my friend, Sarah, and I met up in the grad lap to work on our projects. She was insane and doing a dual masters, and as I mentioned, I was an idiot who was trying to write a novel in a semester.

Sarah brought coffee and snacks, and we did a fuck-ton of word sprints. Without that, I wouldn’t have finished, so I owe Sarah a debt of gratitude.

Now, I swear by sprinting. Not necessarily for all writing. (I never do for blogs, just because it’s so easy to breeze through. They’re so short in comparison.) But when it comes to fiction writing, or any long project where I want to make incremental progress, sprinting is key.

And my favorite thing about sprinting is that it makes you get faster. If you haven’t read 2k to 10K by Rachel Aaron or 5,000 Words a day by Chris Fox , you need to. Both are super short and easy to read. And the best part? They give you a guide on how you can improve your writing speed with sprints.

So if you’re angling for writing 10,000 words a day on the reg, start sprinting. You don’t always have to, but it’s a great way to improve your writing speed, and it makes hitting 10,000 words a lot easier.

It’s also really cool to see how the number of sprints to get to 10,000 words decreases over time as you get faster.

006: You have to take breaks.

No one just sits down and writes 10,000 words in one sitting. You have to take breaks to go to the bathroom, to stretch, or to get your seventh cup of coffee.

(Just kidding. I stop after the fifth cup.)

This is the beauty of the sprint system. You sprint for a bit, and then you get a break. And when I say break, I mean a real break.

I think the key to keeping up the writing productivity is that you give yourself time away from the screen. If you’re furiously sprinting away, and then for your break you pull up Twitter, well. That’s not really a break, is it?

I recommend taking a step away from your computer. Maybe set a timer and go outside for 20 minutes. Or you can go make a snack. Or clean the kitchen. Or do some laundry.

The key to a good break is to let your brain rest and to stand up for a bit. This gives you time away from the computer, and makes it easier for you to tackle your next sprint.

If you only spend time sitting at your desk, it’s really hard to keep going because you’ve been stuck in the same place all day.

So do three or four sprints, and then get up and move your limbs. It will make it so much easier to keep going.

007: Go all in and enable the the tunnel vision.

One of my greatest pet peeves in life is when I find myself multitasking. Sure, you may think you’re being productive, but you’re really just frazzling yourself. (Can you use “frazzle” that way? I AM GOING TO DO IT REGARDLESS.)

The fastest way for me to feel burnt out and stressed is to try to do too many things at once. And if I have too many tabs open or I’ve got too much noise in the background, or I’m trying to text while I work on something, it just kills me.

You may feel like that’s the way to get stuff done. I feel like that’s the way to make minimal progress on multiple things.

So I go all in on most things. That means if I’m writing, I’m only writing. If I’m texting with someone, I’m only texting. And this is key for writing 10,000 words a day, because you need as much time as you can get to hit that word count.

If you’ve chosen this quixotic AF writing goal, you need to go all in. If you’re writing 10,000 words a day, then that’s what you’re doing that day. Embrace the tunnel vision and only allow yourself to write when it’s time to do those writing sprints.

008: Don’t try this without warming up.

Here’s a fun fact: I never start writing with a sprint. And that’s because I know I need to give myself a bit of time to get back in the swing of things. You wouldn’t go into the gym and try to bench press 200 pounds first thing. You have to warm up.

So I like to take some time and go over the outline while I sip some coffee. Then, I like to write maybe 100 to 600 words. This gets my fingers moving, and gets me back in the headspace of the novel.

This is generally all I need to warm up. It’s nothing special, and it’s something that you can do first thing in the morning. It also just makes it easier to hit that 10,000 word goal because you start off by having chipped away a bit already.

It’s not much, but it’s like that little kick that enables you to really pick up speed.

009: Don’t make this your daily writing goal.

And finally, allow me to caution you. I know it can seem really cool to write 10,000 words in a day. It’s not. It’s how you burn out.

Sure, you may want to do this in order to finish a novel in a week. And maybe that will work one time. But it’s not something that is sustainable, especially if you have a day job.

Depending on how fast you type, you may be able to knock out 10,000 words in a three or four hours. And you may think that you can do that every single day after work.

Here’s why you can’t: Your brain needs rest. So unless your day job just consists of downtime where you get ample rest and don’t ever have to solve any problems or stare at a computer screen, you can’t do this.

Don’t demand so much of your writing that it makes it impossible for you to write. Don’t think you’re a machine that can magically always fill your writing time with magical word sprints that net you 10,000 words.

Sometimes writing is slow. Sometimes, you need to just chill and enjoy a day where you don’t hit 1,000 words.

I wrote 50,000 words in 10 days for my Mphil Thesis .

I’ve done it working for a company I hated trying to meet deadlines and I gained 40 pounds so I understand what you’re saying for sure.

I literally thought something was wrong with me because of how fast I put on the weight!

It’s easier to do when you are writing about something you love but after two days you more than likely will burn out.

Awesome article and great tips!

I have totally experienced weight gain while writing stuff I hated for a terrible company! There’s something psychologically that happens to make you gain weight faster when you’re super unhappy. (Or so I think.) Thanks for reading!

10000 Word Essay On Human Resource Management

The leaders play a significant role in the growth of the organization. They tend to provide guidance and support to the employees as well as make the decisions for the company in association with the various other directors of the organization.  It is being stated by the author Dasgupta, Suar and Singh (2013), that the leaders of the organization are the one who communicates both with the employees as well as the directors or the people belonging to the higher position of management of the organization. However, the approaches of communication which are mainly taken by the employees to communicate are not the same. The aim of the paper is to understand the communicational approaches which must be utilized by the leader in order to communicate. The paper will be focusing on a situation of the need of extending a health care facility in another city in which there is a requirement of the services.   The paper will be highlighting the facts or the information which must be incorporated in the communication by the leader, the communicational approach initiated by the leader in each group, and the challenges which are being faced by the leader from each group. Leaders must seek last-minute assignment help to effectively incorporate essential information, adapt communication approaches, and address distinct challenges within each group for successful outcomes.

It is the role of the leader to present the right information as well as the evidence to both the employees as well as the board of directors about the expansion of the health care facility in another city where is the requirement of the services.   In order to represent the information, the leader must incorporate the very necessity of the health care expansion. This will enable the directors to get convinced easily and approve the expansion of the health care facility. Additionally, it is also important for the leader to present the profits of the expansion of the health care in another city.  On the other hand, it is important for the leader to ensure that he has conducted the external analysis of the new location in which the health care facility can be initiated. This will help in avoiding any form of objections in establishing the organization. Additionally, this will even lead to the smooth running of the organization with a higher rate of profit. Therefore, the leader needs to incorporate such information in the presentation.  Additionally, the leader must even examine the policies of the government and must even provide them in the presentation.  On the other hand, while presenting it to the employees, the leader must ask all the employee to work with greater collaboration and find out details which can be of greater help for the organization.  Additionally,  the leader must ask the employees to give their valuable opinion and suggestions for the reason for expansion so that the right conduction of the expansion of the health care facility in another city can be initiated.

To communicate with the directors of the organization or the management heads of the organization, it is very important for the leader to utilize the manipulative form of communication. Liu (2016), states the fact that the manipulative form of communication can be considered to be one that is scheming and even calculating.  Researches show that manipulative communicators are mainly are the ones who are good at impacting or even controlling others for their own advantages. Through the utilization of the manipulative form of communication, the leader will be able to influence the directors or the management head of the organization.  Through the utilization of the manipulative form of communication, the leader will even be able to have an underlying message when they speak.  Through the utilization of this style of communication, the leader will be able to communicate to the directors and equally convince them for the expansion.  The leader must try to put his points along with the evidence for justification to the directors so that the directors get easily convinced. For the purpose of communicating with the employees, it is important for the leader to conduct the

the assertive form of communication. Hwang and Park (2018), states the fact that assertive communication is one of the best styles of communication which is being utilized for the purpose of dealing and even for the purpose of utilization. Researches show that they are mainly the effective form of communicators who tends to have high esteem.   This is the reason for which they are neither very aggressive and very passive (Niess and Diefenbach, 2016).  Through the use of the assertive style of communication, it is important for the leader to confidently put forward his opinion without pushing the restriction and neither being controlling. Choudhury et al., (2019), states that the people who utilize the assertive form of education are the ones who do not harm other individuals.  Additionally, it is to be noted that it is highly important for the leader to discuss the problem and even be very much straightforward and open.  Additionally, it is important for the leader to expect that suggestions or opinions will be coming from the employees which must be rightly heard by the leader (Swift et al., 2013).  It is very important for the leader to ensure that the employees who are providing their suggestions are not being disrespected.  Additionally, through the help of the assertive form of communication, it is important for the leader to ensure that they are appreciating the other employees of the organization. This will eventually lead to the expansion of more ideas which can further lead to the profit of the organization in itself.

A leader can face a huge number of challenges while communicating with both the directors as well a the employees of the organization. One of the basic problems which can be faced by the leader in communicating with the management as well as the employees is that of the language barrier (Miehle, Minker, and Ultes, 2018). The difference in language can lead to misinterpretation. This can further lead to a huge amount of problems and issues which can lead to the delay in the expansion of the organization.   One of the main issues which are can be faced by communicating with the directors is that the directors can be very aggressive and may not be convinced with the facts of the leader. Therefore, the leader might face problems in convincing the directors. Additionally, there will be problems regarding the collaboration and coordination among the employees. The lack of collaboration from the employees can lead the leader to face a various number of problems. Additionally, the employees might be disinterest and can not come up with any form of solutions or resolutions by which it is will be difficult for the leader to provide evidence to the directors.

In conclusion, it is to be noted that communication is one of the most effective forms which is mainly utilized in order to provide viewpoints. It can be considered as the medium which is being utilized in order to express one’s own beliefs, notions, values, and ideas. However, the wrong style of communication can invite various problems. It can lead to the wrong representation of the views. Therefore, it is highly important for any individual to understand the different styles of communication and must implement them in accordance with it.  Different situations require different styles of communication. Therefore,  in this context, it is important for the leader to assert the right style of communication with both the employees and the directors of the organization and lead to the expansion of the health care facility in the place where there is the requirement of the service.

How To Write 10,000 Words In Less Than 12 Hours

March 11, 2017 by Marc Guberti 10 Comments

I'm happy to see you around. You may want to subscribe to my blog. Thanks for visiting!

Welcome back! I am so happy to see that you have come back for more.

blogging 10,000 words

What would you do if you could write 10,000 words a day to kick you content into high gear?

Would you write five lengthy blog posts? How about an e-book? Or maybe high-converting sales copy for multiple landing pages?

Writing 10,000 words a day seems more than challenging. Writing 10,000 words a day seems nearly impossible. However, it is entirely possible. I can write 10,000 words during most weeks.

When I’m feeling really good, I can write 10,000 words in one day. At that rate, I could write 70,000 words per week, or 3,650,000 words every year.

I don’t consistently write at this pace, but when I do write 10,000 words in a day, it’s an awesome feeling. If I manage to write 10,000 words in one day, I can dedicate several more days to content marketing.

With the right work ethic, you can write 10,000 words in less than 12 hours.

Not Your Everyday Writing Goal

As I mentioned earlier, I don’t write 10,000 words every single day of the year. I do it on occasion. The problem with a goal like this is that some people will get tempted to put off their writing and go all-out on one day of the week (or, even worse, once per month).

Writing 10,000 words in one day, but forgetting about the other days of the week, will set you up for ruin. You won’t develop a habit for writing, and you’ll grind through the process instead of enjoying the journey.

If you constantly pressure yourself with this goal, you risk getting overwhelmed and despising writing all together. Before you consider writing 10,000 words a day, you need an established habit.

Writing 500 words per day is a great starting point . As you establish the habit, you can look deeper at some of the other techniques writers use . Once you merge your own habits with the analysis of other writer’s habits, you’ll discover a magic formula.

My absolute minimum goal is to write 1,500 words per day, although I usually finish most days at 2,000-3,000 words. The reason I don’t write 10,000 words a day every time is because I have other responsibilities for my brand. Once I write the content, I have to spend even more time on marketing.

This is why I rarely type 10,000 words in a given day. If you have the writing habit built-in, then you’re ready for your first 10K word day. I advise making a goal for 10K words in a day only twice per month. If you do anymore than that, you risk burnout, but if it works for you, then more power to you!

How To Get The Writing Habit Down

If you don’t have a writing habit, you need to start developing it. Five-hundred words per day is a great starting point. But how do you reach it? For some people, writing 500 words seems just as impossible.

Up to now, I’ve written exactly 500 words and didn’t even notice. It took me just a few minutes. Writing 500 words isn’t that easy, but once you’ve been writing millions of words for your blog posts and books, writing 500 words in one sitting is light work.

Let’s get back to habit development. According to science, it takes 66 days for any activity to become a habit. If you write 500 words every day for two months, you can easily write 500 words anytime.

But instead of writing 500 words per day until it becomes a habit, you need to gradually increase your word count. After a week of writing 500 words, challenge yourself to go a little higher. Don’t make a big jump in the beginning. Choose a more manageable jump such as 550 words per day.

You could even increase your word count to 510 words per day. Small increases add up, and soon enough, you will effortlessly write thousands of words on any given day. It all starts with your daily habits.

Right now, you might be creating a mental roadblock in front of your writing habit. It’s something you know you want or need to do, but for some reason, you keep putting it off.

In The Productivity Project , Chris Bailey lays out six triggers for procrastination. When you look at this list, ask yourself if any of these triggers impact you when you write:

  • Frustration
  • Unstructured
  • Lacks personal meaning
  • No intrinsic reward (it’s not fun)

You can change your results by making these unattractive triggers more attractive . For instance, if your writing lacks personal meaning, change what you write about so it aligns with your interests, which will make it easier for you to write 500 words each day (or more).

I write about topics that I care about, and enjoy writing blog posts like this because they help the people that I’m trying to reach. I don’t enjoy writing history papers, for example, because 99% of them are forced assignments necessary for the grade.

Calculate Your WPM

Let’s shift gears back to your first 10K word day. The next bit of information you’ll need is your WPM. This popular acronym stands for Words Per Minute in the writing community.

WPM is an assessment of how many words you can type in a given minute. Using your WPM, it’s easy to calculate your WPH. Just multiply your WPM by 60. For example, if you type at 40 WPM, then your WPH is 2,400 words.

With the average WPM lurking between 38-40 , the 500 word goal is easily attainable. It’s an average WPM. For most people, it will only take 12.5 minutes or less to finish writing a 500 word blog post (assuming the idea and outline are already in place).

Knowing your WPH allows you to determine how much time you need to write 10,000 words. With the average being 40 WPM (and therefore 2,400 WPH), you only need to type for 4 hours and 10 minutes to reach the 10,000 word milestone.

Of course, this is assuming you consistently type at 40 WPM from start to finish. At some points, you’ll be thinking of different ideas and possibly doing research to verify certain facts as you write your content.

In that case, it will take longer than 4 hours and 10 minutes. If you factor in everything else that can possibly happen (including idea development while writing), you’ll find yourself at the 5-5 1/2 hour range for 10,000 words in a day.

Mathematically speaking, none of this seems as scary as before, right? I could literally write 10,000 words every day of the year, but five hours of writing each day without any marketing won’t bring forth a content brand.

This entire example is based on the average WPM. You may be slightly above or below the average WPM. The only way to determine your status is to start a typing test. Typing tests only last a few minutes; what type what shows up on the screen, and you get your WPM in real-time.

The typing test lasts for a minute, and then you get to see your results.

Here’s mine:

Screen Shot 2017-03-11 at 10.42.38 AM

For this speed test, I typed 95 words per minute, which came from countless hours of practice. At this rate, I could write 5,700 words in one hour and finish writing 10,000 words in just two hours.

While this data is skewed since the words are already provided (and you’ll have to think of fresh ideas to write about), knowing your WPM gives you a rough idea of how much time it will take for you to write 10,000 words. Just tack on an extra hour to factor in time for idea generation.

On this WPM test, you’re also likely to make mistakes as I did since the words are listed one after the other instead of provided in clear sentences.

While writing takes time, editing and revising can take even longer. You can hire an editor, ask a friend for help, or edit the content yourself. With all three of these approaches, there will be typos in your work. It’s practically unavoidable unless you meticulously look it over for several months or even a year depending on how long your content is.

At that point, it could have been published in an imperfect form but attracted more people to your brand.

Combining Attention & Energy

The timing of your work is just as important as the amount of time you invest in your work. Let me share an example with you:

Writer A goes through the entire day feeling exhausted. She still feels exhausted but pulls out her computer anyway and starts typing at 10 pm.

Writer B wakes up at 6 am and starts writing almost immediately. After some typing, she takes a break, eats a healthy breakfast, and then continues typing for another hour.

Which writer seems more productive to you? I’d go with Writer B any day of the week. Both writers are committed and willing to write for several hours. The difference is that one feels charged up while the other feels exhausted.

Your body and mind are part of you, and they play a big role in your productivity. If you feel distracted, that will negatively affect your productivity. There’s no question about it.

Most people focus on time as a measurement of productivity. If you worked for six hours today, you were more productive than when you only worked for five hours, right?

That approach is all wrong.

It’s not just a matter of how much time we put into our work, more specifically, it’s about what kind of time we’re putting into our work. Are you putting quality minutes into your work, or do you struggle through the day eager to boast about how much work you did later?

Circling back to The Productivity Project , Chris Bailey also mentions biological primetime. Everyone has a biological primetime, the timeframe in which it’s easiest for us to enter our working flow. For me, my biological primetime is early in the morning. For others, their biological primetime is in the afternoon or evening.

Think about how you work to determine your biological primetime. That is when you need to write your content. During this primetime, it’s much easier to write 10,000 words a day.

To actually find your primetime, you need to track your entire day, from what tasks you completed to how often you procrastinated. If you do this for a week, you will discover your biological primetime.

Once you know your primetime, you can reallocate your tasks so your high-value tasks (i.e. writing 10K words) get distributed within your biological primetime. That way, your attention and energy are properly focused on the work that matters most when you’re at your optimal level of productivity.

Not only should you track your time to discover your biological primetime, you should also learn a lot about yourself . You’ll learn how you spend your time and how you procrastinate. You can more easily weed out the bad activities so you can focus more of your time, attention, and energy on the tasks that create the biggest impact.

Space Everything Else Out Of Your Biological Primetime

When you keep track of your time, you’ll discover which tasks you do during your biological primetime. Most people discover that they’re making a big blunder within this golden opportunity.

If you check your stats, read the news, or scroll through Facebook during these golden hours, you are restricting your potential. That is the time you should focus on writing content.

Based on how you track your time, you’ll determine different distractions that can get in your way. Email and the internet are two of the many distractions that call us when we are trying to pursue our work. Anticipate distractions like these and eliminate them.

When I write a blog post, I’m almost never on the internet. The only time I use the internet while writing a blog post is when I’m doing research. I find the right time to mention someone else’s article. All I have to do is get the link, and that’s the only time I use the internet while blogging.

Oh, and I never see my Mail icon when I’m writing blog posts. I remove that app from my dashboard and only bring it back when I’m done writing.

Plan Out Your Content In Advance

I keep score of my blog posts’ lengths as I write them. Right now, this blog post is a little over 2,000 words long. In the past, I would struggle to get past 1,000 words with a blog post like this.

I might get past 1,000 words on a post, but not by much.

I always planned out my content in advance, even when it felt like writing massive blog posts was challenging. Back then, my outline was limited. I identified the blog post title and which tactics I would discuss.

Now I use the Socratic Outline for all of my blog posts. The Socratic Outline is like a traditional outline with a twist. You act as the reader and type questions the reader would have. For each tactic I discuss, I type at least three questions that the reader might ask.

For a blog post on getting more Twitter followers, one tip would be “Interact with your audience.” Here are some questions people may have:

  • How do I interact with my audience?
  • What do I say?
  • How do I continue the conversation?

Instead of having five ideas within a blog post containing five tactics, I now multiply that total to 15 ideas within the same blog post containing the same five tactics. The more ideas you have to play with in your writing, the easier it is to write 10,000 quality words each day.

Anyone can type “very, very, very” 10,000 times. Planning out your content in advance allows you to develop the skill of writing quality words in massive quantities.

The Socratic Outline makes long-form content much easier to produce.

Change Your Environment

The tactics mentioned so far will give you the skills and mindset needed to write 10,000 words in under 12 hours. However, your environment is also a critical factor. When I first wrote this blog post, I mentioned that we all have a biological primetime. We are more productive during certain times of the day than others.

I want to take biological primetime one step further. Your biological primetime differs based on the environment you are in. At home, my biological primetime is the morning. Towards the evening, especially after 5 pm eastern, my productivity drops.

The biological primetime for my productivity at home is in the morning.

That’s why I interview most of my podcast guests in the evening. I’m not as productive at writing in the evening, but I can hold great conversations during that time.

Sometimes, when I don’t have an interview, I’ll go to a local bookstore in the evening to become more productive.

My productivity spikes in the new environment because my environment has changed. Your environment affects your biological primetime. I’m more productive at a local bookstore during the evening, and I only create content in that bookstore. I’m not doing anything else at that time.

I do all of the tech related work in the morning (create landing pages, check email sequences, etc.) and create as much content as my heart desires.

If your productivity is lagging at certain times of the day, the best solution is to change your environment. Then, you change your results.

In Conclusion

Writing 10,000 words a day is a daunting task, especially if you do it consistently. However, if you write 10,000 words two days each month, you’ll add an extra 20,000 words to your monthly total.

Those 20,000 words can provide you with several blog posts, books, and other forms of content. As you continue writing every day, you’ll have an easier time writing high quality words in massive quantities.

6 Tips To Write 10000 Words a Day of Quality Content

How to Write 10,000 Words a Day

Table of Contents

You can write 10000 words a day

Three days a week, I set aside most other activities and write 10000 words a day towards completing a book. It takes dedication, willpower and resistance to temptation, especially from the internet, to be able to do this. There’s always something else that seems more fun, and the excuse of “writer’s block” is constantly available. However, regardless of distractions and excuses, it is possible to write that many words in a single, 8-hour day.

Can you write 10,000 words in a day? Some people set their goal of writing to 1000 words a day, some to 750 words per day and others to even 200 words a day. The important thing is to set a goal and meet that goal every single day. By the way,

Set a Goal to Write 10000 Words a Day

Set a Goal to Write 10000 Words a Day

It’s important not to stress out too much if the goals are not met. They are intended as a guideline, not as a straight jacket. Setting goals adds focus to the day and helps to prevent distractions from appearing which don’t align to my longer-term objectives. Setting goals is an important part of being able to write 10000 words a day.

Eliminate Distractions

Make a Living as a Professional Self-Published Author

To write 10000 words in a single, 8-hour day, you have to eliminate and ignore distractions.

  • Create a workspace in your home and make it clear to everyone in the household that when you are in that space, you are not to be interrupted except for urgent, life-threatening emergencies. You’ll have to enforce this to make it work, and sometimes others will not be happy with you for not giving them attention. Nonetheless, to achieve your goal you must set enforce your limit and space.
  • Turn off the cell phone and other distractions. Don’t just put it on vibrate, because you will still know when it is ringing. Either turn it off or put it in another room, far away from you.
  • Ignore the temptations of the internet. Sure, I know how much fun it is to “just look at the news for a minute” or “scan Facebook”, but don’t do it. They can drag you away from your goal for minutes or even hours.
  • Do not answer emails, social media and other messages. During your productive time, make an effort to ignore all emails and other messaging. Believe it or not, you lose hours each day just reviewing and answering and getting caught up in related activities as a result.
  • Eliminate any other distractions. As you identify other things that cause you to deviate from your writing, tune them out or turn them off.

Write in Chunks

I’ve found it is best to divide up my writing day into smaller chunks of time. This allows me to schedule short breaks for stretching, snacking, answering email and so on. I set a timer for 45 minutes and write for that length of time. When the timer goes off, I reset it for 15 minutes, which is the length of the break. This seems to work very well, and vastly increases my productivity. Additionally, it gives me a chance to stretch and get on the exercise bike for a few minutes, which is better for the back and the body.

Don’t Edit as you Write

You’ll never be able to write 10000 words a day if you attempt to multi-task editing and writing. When you write, just write. Don’t go back and change words, delete sentences and restructure things. Save that for another day. You’ll find that by just writing all in one shot, you’ll get far more done. Then you can edit the whole thing at once, with a clearer picture of where you are going with it all.

Explore Dictation Software

Dictation software has allowed me to improve the speed of my writing by over three times. It is far faster to speak than it is to type, at least for most people. For some, dictating their works to the computer works wonders, and for others it is a meaningless distraction.

Reward Yourself

Once you’ve successfully completed your goal to write 10000 words a day, reward yourself. You’ve done well, and you deserve to be rewarded for your efforts.

Not that I have EVER written 10,000 words in a day, however even in writing sessions, aimed at quantity, I find that keyword/concepts can direct me, and helps me to avoid writing mere gibberish. However, that being said, there is something to be said about just writing, and we know that you are the King at that!

I did youtube videos to record my books when I was publishing. Then I had a transcriber transcribe them. It was great content if I do say so myself so I didn’t have to outsource writing my books. It worked great.

Life on 10,000 Words a Day: How I’m Hacking My Writing Process

I’ve talked before about how I don’t write every day. This idea blows the minds of some folks who follow me on Twitter during the long marches right up before deadline, when I’m updating them with insane word counts while weeping into my whisky and mourning extravagant character deaths. But the reason I binge write – and, in fact, the reason it’s often necessary – is because I’ve tried writing every day many, many times before in my twenty years putting words onto pages, and I find it absurdly painful to write a book that way.

I realize that the idea of not writing every day flies in the face of every bit of writing advice that new writers get. And, you know, “Write every day” isn’t bad advice when you’re new and still working on honing craft. It can help you make the time you need to actively practice your skills, which is important when you’re still figuring out how to write a good sentence. But one of the best pieces of writing advice I ever got was from Carol Emshwiller, who said, “Practice doesn’t make perfect. It makes permanent.”

If you are sitting down writing the same old shit every day, without actively working to level up your craft, you’re not going to get any better. You will just keep writing the same shit and throwing it against the wall and hoping it sticks. This is one of the reasons I’m always writing a book I’m not quite ready to write. But constantly leveling up also means there’s no auto pilot. No auto pilot means hitting word count felt like an endless slog, to me.

Writing EMPIRE ASCENDANT, the sequel to my epic fantasy novel, THE MIRROR EMPIRE, was an exhausting project. They are complex books, and things only get more sticky in EMPIRE ASCENDANT. The multiple worlds, the interwoven timelines, the varied cultures, were all elements I had to manage on top of all the regular nuts and bolts of a good book: create great characters, build compelling settings, give readers big explosions and fight scenes (literal explosions and/or emotional ones), a satisfying sense of progression, tension, conflict, suspense, evocative prose, and all the rest. Writing a book that’s readable is tough. Writing a book you really want to be good is fucking exhausting.

For some time now, I’ve tried to break up my writing time into chunks that I carve out every day of the week. We work five days a week, so I should write 5-6 days a week, right? I was working hard to get in writing time during every work day lunch, and for 90 minutes every night. But I could never keep that up. Worse, I actually started dreading these writing times. I vented online about it. I whined to my spouse. I wanted to hurl books around my room every time I was supposed to start.

Writing just wasn’t fun anymore. I told myself over and over that this was just a natural thing, that this was just what it was like to be a writer with a day job and book deadlines. But I mourned that lost joy.

The truth is, I get my best, most fulfilling writing done when I have big chunks of time to immerse myself in it. I’m talking four hour, six hour, ten hour blocks. That was easy when I was a kid, a teen, and when I was in college. It’s a lot harder to carve out eight hours for yourself on a Wednesday. The thing is, I truly enjoy the time I spend writing when I have the chance to immerse myself in the world I’m writing about, instead of feeling like I’m poking at little newspaper cutouts and telling them to do things and oh god it’s time to make dinner and I have to get up at 5am and….

I heard author Catherynne Valente once compare falling into this immersive state while writing with falling asleep, and the metaphor was so apt that a little bell went off in my head, and I realized that I’d been trying to fit the act of writing into a work week designed to produce widgets, not prose. When you only have 90 minutes to lie down and take a nap, and the dog is barking, and people are opening and closing the doors, and the TV is on, and cars are driving by… you’re constantly popping in and out of that glorious place where you’re drifting off to sleep, and you really never reach the deep sleep you need to feel rested. Sure, you might get some “rest” but you haven’t really slept the way you would if you have five hours, eight hours, ten hours to nod off.

mjaxmy02mwe2njqzmwi4nmnjztgx

But give me six hours and I fall into the process there in hour one, and emerge on the other side during hour six blinking and bleary-eyed, like I’ve just battled monsters and saved kingdoms all by myself for the last six hours and hey, I also have 7,000 words done and gosh do I feel fabulous.

When I read Rachel Aaron’s “2k to 10k “, the first and most important tip of hers that I put into place to hit a greater word count was to “pre-write” my scenes for the writing session I was about to start. She points out that we all waste too much of our precious writing time just staring at the page thinking, “What does this character do next?” If you can glance at your notes and see it, and you’ve primed yourself beforehand by writing a summary, it’s a lot easier to keep your momentum going. Even if you’re like me and hate outlining, this is actually a pretty fast and low stress hack. I just write 3-4 sentences of what happens in the chapter I plan to work on that day, and then I get started. It takes five minutes, and it eliminates a whole lot of wayward time I’d spend staring angrily at the screen and clicking over to check Twitter or look at something on Pinterest, hoping I just come up with something inspiring for the scene. Pre-work is gold.

But one of the other things in Aaron brought up was  to try and get big blocks of writing time, get out of the house to work, and to figure out what time of day you produce the most work. I never had the time to put this tactic into place before, but terror at missing my deadline was… inspiring, to say the least.

So when I found myself these last six weeks barreling to finish EMPIRE ASCENDANT before its Feb 1 st deadline, I decided to carve out big chunks of time for myself, time that would let me immerse myself in the work, and actually track during which hours I was producing more words.

I sat down at the coffee shop the first Saturday morning at about 10am and worked until I hit 10,000 words.  It took me until about 7-8pm, including breaks to eat. I was consistently hitting 1k/1hr early on, with peak word counts from 11 or 12 until 2 or 3. It got tougher as the day got longer, which shouldn’t be too surprising. I’m not sure if this means I’m better writing in the morning or afternoon, it just means I write faster during peak REM time, right? If I’m falling to sleep at 10am and getting up at 7pm, then my deepest sleep is somewhere in that middle time period – and coincidently, that’s when I’m doing the most effortless work.

Sundays were always harder. I’d still hit my 10k, but it would take longer, it wouldn’t be as fun, and my fingers were sore by the end of it, cause typing 20,000 words in two days is, indeed, a lot. I did find that updating Twitter with my word count, using it like a timesheet to track my progress, was also pretty motivating. I could take a break and snark with people for a few minutes, then dive back in.

The first weekend I did this, I thought it was a fluke. I spent the next couple of week days trying to work in my usual 90 minute chunk after work, and it was so dispiriting, so physically painful, that I just gave up and said, “Forget this. I’m going to just write another 10k on Saturday.” And I set the manuscript aside and worked that week on making notes, reviewing the manuscript, and doing some research.

By the time Saturday swung around again, I was refreshed, invigorated by the research and other reading I’d done during the week, and ready to go ahead. I hit my 10k easily on both days.

I spent the next weekend on revisions, which involved adding another 12k to the manuscript.

And… when I surfaced from the manuscript at 4pm yesterday while sipping a beer at the new beer lounge in town, I had a fully revised and ready to pass off draft of EMPIRE ASCENDANT. I’d written something like 60k of it, total, in six weeks.

And I felt great.

I really did. Every night after I wrote 10k, I felt fabulous. All the sudden I loved being a writer, I was enjoying what I was doing again, and even singing along to the radio on the way in to work. Writing had gone from painful chore to weekend joy, something I did at a coffee shop or a beer lounge, clacking away, spending some quality time being perfectly, joyfully introverted, a traveler to some foreign place, building a whole world all by myself.

It was fabulous.

One of my biggest laments this last year is that I was getting more writing invitations than I could possibly have time to write for. I had so many more opportunities, but lacked  time in the day to write them. Writing was already so painful, trying to do it every day, that I couldn’t imagine trying to do more on top of it.

But for my next book, THE STARS ARE LEGION, I’ll be putting this new writing schedule into place. Instead of trying to squeeze out 2k a day five days a week, I’m just scheduling a 10k writing day every Saturday. I’ll write just one day every week, giving myself those five days a week I’m navigating my day job to just read, do research, or complete writing-related admin work. It means writing a book in bursts, this time. But it also means I’d have the potential to finish a rough draft – the most loathsome part of a book, for me – in just 9-10 weeks. That’d give me a LOT more time to revise, and avoid the terrible panic right before deadline comes around.

Best of all, being able to draft quickly also means I can set it aside to rest well ahead of deadline and work on other things – short stories, novellas – that people have been asking for.

Life is mad, so whether or not this new schedule works is up in the air, but I’m happy to spend every Saturday immersively happy inside my novels again instead of spending an hour and a half every night hating my life just to squeeze out 500 words. This doesn’t mean I’m not getting up at 5 am anymore – quite the opposite. Now I can use all that time I was trying to get those 500 words in the morning on writing related stuff like admin, research, and revisions.

This goes against a lot of perceived wisdom about how we should schedule our writing lives, but it sure does make me a lot happier in having chosen mine.

Here’s to a happier writing life.

Why Having a “10,000-words-a-day” Writing Goal Was Too Much… – by Christina Queen

March 25, 2022

Why Having a “10,000-words-a-day” Writing Goal Was Too Much… – by Christina Queen

There I am, standing on the top of a mound that was once a former bunker, staring out at the English Channel. Omaha Beach is an inspiration on its own; the historical events that took place here make it somber and emotional. After jotting a few notes, I walk off the grassy mound and back to my car. The rain splashes against my windshield, bubbling before sliding down the glass. I’m avoiding going home to begin writing.

Don’t get me wrong; I want to write. I want to capture the fresh and raw emotions brought on by visiting this amazing beach. But, I can’t. In fact, I’m avoiding my computer altogether.

If I listen to the advice found on the internet, I should be writing every day and setting goals for myself to be successful.

I’ve done that, and I must admit I found the “advice” suffocating. I try to avoid writing. I find myself shying away from my task, which is upsetting because I love writing. I have loved it since the third grade when I wrote little plays for my class to perform each week. But, not being able to stick to the goal of 10,000 words a day was not only making me feel unworthy of the title “writer,” it also had me feeling overwhelmed.

So, why is a 10,000-word day goal so hard?

I’m not kidding when I say I have been writing pretty much my entire life. In school, I would write short stories and poems for my school paper. I was the kid who was excited about a research paper, or a project that we had to work on with a report.

As I have grown as a writer, so has my process. I create outlines, character backgrounds, etc. This is my profession, so I should have professional habits. One of the ways I adopted these professional habits was to set goals, and set up schedules.

My best writing happens in the morning, sometimes right out of bed. Understanding this, I set up my writing schedule and word goals around my most productive time. However, while I was able to accomplish my goals for the first week, suddenly, I wanted to avoid writing like it was the plague. The writing was no longer the bright shiny love of my life; it was now a chore.

How did I get around this? And, how can you get around that feeling?

I learned to listen to myself, and understand that I am not like the “average writer.” My creativity comes differently for me than it does for others. I work more organically. How I work may look less structured but I am most productive and creative when I am not committed to an unrealistic goal.

To get around the “strictness of goals,” I make sure that I write during the times of the day when I know I will be more productive. Using my outline, I make sure that I stay true to the story, but I don’t limit or require myself to reach a specific word goal.

Working during the hours when I feel most productive also helps me tap into the creativity that makes me enjoy writing. Understanding myself, and learning how I work, has been incredible for my productivity and writing management.

Here are ways you can continue to progress as a writer:

1. Discover yourself When writing a story, how long does it take to get it out of your soul and onto paper? Track the time it takes you to push all the good stuff you are coming up with on the fly.

Discover how much time you, as a writer, need to devote to writing. It is vital that you understand how long it will take you to write a chapter, an article, a short story, a poem…anything that’s on your to-write list. Knowing how much time it takes you to write, and how many words you can push out, will help you create a realistic goal, and not turn writing into a chore. The bonus is that you know what you can hold yourself accountable for should you feel you cannot write another word.

2. Discover your motivation For me, my motivation usually comes from books, research, or visiting the place I may be writing about (or want to use in a story). When I feel inspired, I turn to a journal. Journaling is a great way to gather your thoughts and notes, and collect details you may want to use later.

Journaling will also help you keep track of the things that motivate you. For instance, you could be sitting in the park, and notice a couple arguing. The way they fight, the hand gestures, and the way they stand could all inspire you.

3. Set page goals instead of word count goals As with any writer, I understand that goals are essential, especially when you are working towards a deadline. Remember to keep track of what you are capable of, and use that information to set a realistic goal for your writing. If you can create 40,000 words a month, use that as a goal.

Page goals are a much more realistic goal for someone like me. I am doing a little math, taking the average page amount of any given fiction book, dividing it by the number of weeks in which I want to finish my project, and then figuring out how many pages I need to have completed each week to reach that goal.

4. Read. Write. Read. Repeat.

Reading is a great motivator and it helps build your vocabulary. Plus, it allows you to become a better writer. Spending time with established writers gives you good examples of what good writing looks like. I am not saying you should copy everything the author has done, but you can use their writing as a guide. Focus on how they build a scene, the dilemma the character faces in each chapter, or how the plot builds. You are learning in real-time how a great story can be established.

Use what you have learned in your own writing. While setting 10,000 words, a day goal may work for others; there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to goals. For many, 10,000 words a day may seem overwhelming or unachievable. If that is the case, try something else. Hold yourself accountable, and use a writing system to support you, and not hinder your progress.

Is it Possible to Write a 10,000-word Undergraduate Dissertation in 16 Days?

Adela B.

Table of contents

The clock is counting down, and the deadline for your undergraduate dissertation is on the away.

Whether the timeline caught you by surprise or you've been meticulously planning, the final stretch demands a strategic, focused approach.

We've crafted a foolproof 16-day plan to not only complete your 10,000-word dissertation but to ensure it shines with clarity, coherence, and scholarly insight.

From brainstorming compelling topics to fine-tuning each sentence, this guide is your roadmap through the labyrinth of research, writing, and revision.

16-Day Plan to Write a 10,000-word Undergraduate Dissertation

Whether you were given a month or two to submit your undergraduate dissertation paper, the fact is that today you are just 16 days away from the deadline. With no time to waste, here is how you can write a 10,000-word dissertation in 16 days.

Day 1 – 2: Brainstorm Potential Topics

Devote the first two days to just brainstorming topic ideas and nothing else. Start with making a list of topics you are interested in and then look into each. You can also explore topics that are related to your career goals. That way, you begin to get a better understanding of the field of your choice.

The topic should not be too vague or complex. Once you have made your decision, discuss it with your guide to check its feasibility before you go ahead.

Day 3 – 6: Start the Research

You have a topic and your guide’s approval. Now is the time to get immersed in conducting detailed research on the chosen topic. Don’t just rely on search engines – you have four days in hand, spend one day in the college library, and refer to journals and past dissertations.

Research that involves fieldwork, such as surveys, lab work, and interviews, is more time-consuming, so ensure you plan it accordingly. Gather all the information you collected through various sources and organize it properly so you don’t have to look for it later.

Day 7: Create a Rough Outline

Just like you created rough outlines for college essays, you need to do the same for your dissertation paper. Outline the sections you plan to include and enlist the main points under each section. Broadly, these are the sections you must have:

  • Introduction;
  • Literature Review;
  • Research Methodology;
  • Results or Findings;
  • Conclusion;
  • Bibliography.

You must ensure you have included the key points and see that the paper flows logically. Once the outline is ready, it is a good idea to consult your guide and incorporate their feedback.

Day 8 – 12: Start Drafting

Now begins the writing process, and you have five days to complete it, which is a reasonable amount of time to do full justice. It is a good idea to break down the writing and aim to finish 1,000 – 2,000 words daily. This saves you from burnout and enhances productivity, too.

Find the best time to write when your surroundings are peaceful, and you can devote all your attention to completing the paper. Keep your phone away while writing, and be focused on meeting your daily writing goal. Before you know it, your 10,000-word dissertation paper will be over!

Day 13: Take a Break

The hard part is over – you are done with the writing. Not only do you need a break, you truly deserve one. Before you hop on to the next step, pat yourself on the back for completing it on time and take a break. Spend time with friends, relax, watch a movie, or do anything that takes your mind off the paper and rejuvenates your mind.

Day 14: Edit the Paper

You've diligently written 10,000 words or more, and now it's crucial to refine your manuscript for the final submission. As you review your work, ask yourself:

  • Is the content concise, or could it be more succinct?
  • Are concepts repeated or presented clearly just once?
  • Does the narrative flow smoothly and logically?
  • Are there sections that need better organization?
  • Are your arguments well-balanced and substantiated?

Remember, a fresh perspective is invaluable, so allow some time to rest your eyes before beginning the editing process.

If you're looking to save time and enjoy an extra break, our team is ready to edit your dissertation paper to enhance its clarity, coherence, and overall impact. We are committed to refining your work, ensuring it is concise, well-structured, and compelling so it truly stands out in its final form.

Day 15: Do a Thorough Proofread

Many mistakes in editing and proofreading for being the same, but that’s not true. While editing is about checking the flow and quality of writing, proofreading involves checking for spelling, grammatical, and typing errors. Both of these are equally important to submit quality, well-written papers.

Day 16: Ask for Feedback

Finally, you are done with your 10,000-word undergraduate dissertation paper! Before you bind it, it helps to get feedback on your paper. Share a copy with a friend, parent, or guide and get a fresh set of eyes on your writing. They may be able to point out loopholes or flaws that can give you perspective and help you improve the piece further.

how to write a 10000 word essay

I’m now a 10,000 words a day believer because I have been watching students write even more than this in a single day at the Thesis Bootcamps we run at ANU.

At every Thesis Bootcamp we have run, at least one student will achieve this goal, and many write many more words than they thought they would. .

MYSELF ESSAY 5 (300 WORDS) My name is Sulekha; I read in class 9th standard in…

This organising technique works best for very late stage thesis students, but it can be a way of creating order at any time in your journey and working out what you need to find out or write more about. I’ve made a so you can make one of your own.

2) Set aside a protected time to write

I’ve written so much about this, so I wont rehash it all here. If you are interested in some techniques and ideas for creating protective writing time, have a look at the

Have a look at the testimonials on our . I’d love to hear about other ways of doing writing marathons and what you think about this kind of ‘binge writing’.

If you are an ANU student,

If you are in the UK,

In “Getting things done”

In “On Writing”

I’ve been doing medical writing and translations, and all work comes with tight deadlines, but the normal speed always was 2500 words a day or 10 standard pages. I know people who were able to go up to 4000 words, but quite honestly: how can one be sure about quality of such writing? Is the goal just in quantity or is it in something worthwhile? I’d never believe every single word in a 10K word writing a day is in its right place, or has the shade of meaning which makes any writing unique and worth reading. It’s also physically very tough. After typing some 100 pages in 4 days I was always sick: wrists and shoulders were hurting, and over years my eyesight worsened a lot. Maybe she is dictating this using a voice recognition software? However, that requires a lot of editing. 40 standard pages a day is bit overdone. Just my thou

Guest Post: How I Went From Writing 2,000 Words a Day to 10,000 Words a Day

by Rachel Aaron

Rachel Aaron

But (of course), things didn’t work out like that. Every day I’d sit down to add 4000 words to my new manuscript. I was determined, I was experienced, I knew my world. There was no reason I couldn’t get 4k down. But every night when I hauled myself away, my word count had only increased by 2k, the same number of words I’d been getting before I quit my day job.

Needless to say, I felt like a failure. Here I was, a professional writer with three books about to come out, and I couldn’t even beat the writing I’d done before I went pro. At first I made excuses, this novel was the most complicated of all the Eli books I’d written, I was tired because my son thinks 4am is an awesome time to play, etc. etc. But the truth was there was no excuse. I had to find a way to boost my word count, and with months of 2k a day dragging me down, I had to do it fast. So I got scientific. I gathered data and tried experiments, and ultimately ended up boosting my word count to heights far beyond what I’d thought was possible, and I did it while making my writing better than ever before. When I told people at ConCarolinas that I’d gone from writing 2k to 10k per day, I got a huge response. Everyone wanted to know how I’d done it, and I finally got so sick of telling the same story over and over again that I decided to write it down here.

So, once and for all, here’s the story of how I went from writing 500 words an hour to over 1500, and (hopefully) how you can too:

A quick note: There are many fine, successful writers out there who equate writing quickly with being a hack. I firmly disagree. My methods remove the dross, the time spent tooling around lost in your daily writing, not the time spent making plot decisions or word choices. This is not a choice between ruminating on art or churning out the novels for gross commercialism (though I happen to like commercial novels), it’s about not wasting your time for whatever sort of novels you want to write.

Drastically increasing your words per day is actually pretty easy, all it takes is a shift in perspective and the ability to be honest with yourself (which is the hardest part). Because I’m a giant nerd, I ended up creating a metric, a triangle with three core requirements: Knowledge, Time, and Enthusiasm. Any one of these can noticeably boost your daily output, but all three together can turn you into a word machine. I never start writing these days unless I can hit all three.

Side 1: Knowledge, or Know What You’re Writing Before You Write It

The first big boost to my daily wordcount happened almost by accident. Used to be I would just pop open the laptop and start writing. Now, I wasn’t a total make-it-up-as-you-go writer. I had a general plot outline, but my scene notes were things like “Miranda and Banage argue” or “Eli steals the king.” Not very useful, but I knew generally what direction I was writing in, and I liked to let the characters decide how the scene would go. Unfortunately, this meant I wasted a lot of time rewriting and backtracking when the scene veered off course.

This was how I had always written, it felt natural to me. But then one day I got mired in a real mess. I had spent three days knee deep in the same horrible scene. I was drastically behind on my wordcount, and I was facing the real possibility of missing my deadline… again. It was the perfect storm of all my insecurities, the thought of letting people down mixed with the fear that I really didn’t know what I was doing, that I wasn’t a real writer at all, just an amateur pretending to be one. But as I got angrier and angrier with myself, I looked down at my novel and suddenly realized that I was being an absolute idiot. Here I was, desperate for time, floundering in a scene, and yet I was doing the hardest work of writing (figuring out exactly what needs to happen to move the scene forward in the most dramatic and exciting way) in the most time consuming way possible (ie, in the middle of the writing itself).

As soon as I realized this, I stopped. I closed my laptop and got out my pad of paper. Then, instead of trying to write the scene in the novel as I had been, I started scribbling a very short hand, truncated version the scene on the paper. I didn’t describe anything, I didn’t do transitions. I wasn’t writing, I was simply noting down what I would write when the time came. It took me about five minutes and three pages of notebook paper to untangle my seemingly unfixable scene, the one that had just eaten three days of my life before I tried this new approach. Better still, after I’d worked everything out in shorthand I was able to dive back into the scene and finish it in record time. The words flew onto the screen, and at the end of that session I’d written 3000 words rather than 2000, most of them in that last hour and a half.

Looking back, it was so simple I feel stupid for not thinking of it sooner. If you want to write faster, the first step is to  know what you’re writing before you write it . I’m not even talking about macro plot stuff, I mean working out the back and forth exchanges of an argument between characters, blocking out fights, writing up fast descriptions. Writing this stuff out in words you actually want other people to read, especially if you’re making everything up as you go along, takes FOREVER. It’s horribly inefficient and when you get yourself in a dead end, you end up trashing hundreds, sometimes thousands of words to get out. But jotting it down on a pad? Takes no time at all. If the scene you’re sketching out starts to go the wrong way, you see it immedeatly, and all you have to do is cross out the parts that went sour and start again at the beginning. That’s it. No words lost, no time wasted. It was god damn beautiful.

Every writing session after this realization, I dedicated five minutes (sometimes more, never less) and wrote out a quick description of what I was going to write. Sometimes it wasn’t even a paragraph, just a list of this happens then this then this. This simple change, these five stupid minutes, boosted my wordcount enormously. I went from writing 2k a day to writing 5k a day within a week without increasing my 5 hour writing block. Some days I even finished early.

Of the three sides of the triangle, I consider knowledge to be the most important. This step alone more than doubled my word count. If you only want to try one change at a time, this is the one I recommend the most.

Side 2: Time

Now that I’d had such a huge boost from one minor change, I started to wonder what else I could do to jack my numbers up even higher. But as I looked for other things I could tweak, I quickly realized that I knew embarrassingly little about how I actually wrote my novels. I’d kept no records of my progress, I couldn’t even tell you how long it took me to write any of my last three novels beyond broad guesstimations, celebratory blog posts, and vague memories of past word counts. It was like I started every book by throwing myself at the keyboard and praying for a novel to shoot out of my fingers before the deadline. And keep in mind this is my business. Can you imagine a bakery or a freelance designer working this way? Never tracking hours or keeping a record of how long it took me to actually produce the thing I was selling? Yeah, pretty stupid way to work.

If I was going to boost my output (or know how long it took me to actually write a freaking novel), I had to know what I was outputting in the first place. So, I started keeping records. Every day I had a writing session I would note the time I started, the time I stopped, how many words I wrote, and where I was writing on a spreadsheet. I did this for two months, and then I looked for patterns.

Several things were immediately clear. First, my productivity was at its highest when I was in a place other than my home. That is to say, a place without internet. The afternoons I wrote at the coffee shop with no wireless were twice as productive as the mornings I wrote at home. I also saw that, while butt in chair time is the root of all writing, not all butt in chair time is equal. For example, those days where I only got one hour to write I never managed more than five hundred words in that hour. By contrast, those days I got five hours of solid writing I was clearing close to 1500 words an hour. The numbers were clear: the longer I wrote, the faster I wrote (and I believe the better I wrote, certainly the writing got easier the longer I went). This corresponding rise of wordcount and writing hours only worked up to a point, though. There was a definite words per hour drop off around hour 7 when I was simply too brain fried to go on.

But these numbers are very personal, the point I’m trying to make is that by recording my progress every day I had the data I needed to start optimizing my daily writing. Once I had my data in hand, I rearranged my schedule to make sure my writing time was always in the afternoon (my most prolific time according to my sheet, which was a real discovery. I would have bet money I was better in the morning.), always at my coffee shop with no internet, and always at least 4 hours long. Once I set my time, I guarded it viciously, and low and behold my words per day shot up again. This time to an average of 6k-7k per writing day, and all without adding any extra hours. All I had to do was discover what made good writing time for me and then make sure the good writing time was the time I fought hardest to get.

Even if you don’t have the luxury of 4 uninterrupted hours at your prime time of day, I highly suggest measuring your writing in the times you do have to write. Even if you only have 1 free hour a day, trying that hour in the morning some days and the evening on others and tracking the results can make sure you aren’t wasting your precious writing time on avoidable inefficiencies. Time really does matter.

Side 3: Enthusiasm

I was flying high on my new discoveries. Over the course of two months I’d jacked my daily writing from 2k per day to 7k with just a few simple changes and was now actually running ahead of schedule for the first time  in my writing career. But I wasn’t done yet. I was absolutely determined I was going to break the 10k a day barrier.

I’d actually broken it before. Using Knowledge and Time, I’d already managed a few 10k+ days, including one where I wrote 12,689 words, or two chapters, in 7 hours. To be fair, I had been writing outside of my usual writing window in addition to my normal writing on those days, so it wasn’t a total words-per-hour efficiency jump. But that’s the great thing about going this fast, the novel starts to eat you and you find yourself writing any time you can just for the pure joy of it. Even better, on the days where I broke 10k, I was also pulling fantastic words-per-hour numbers, 1600 – 2000 words per hour as opposed to my usual 1500. It was clear these days were special, but I didn’t know how. I  did  know that I wanted those days to become the norm rather than the exception, so I went back to my records (which I now kept meticulously) to find out what made the 10k days different.

The answer was head-slappingly obvious. Those days I broke 10k were the days I was writing scenes I’d been dying to write since I planned the book. They were the candy bar scenes, the scenes I wrote all that other stuff to get to. By contrast, my slow days (days where I was struggling to break 5k) corresponded to the scenes I wasn’t that crazy about.

This was a duh moment for me, but it also brought up a troubling new problem. If I had scenes that were boring enough that I didn’t want to write them, then there was no way in hell anyone would want to read them. This was my novel, after all. If I didn’t love it, no one would.

Fortunately, the solution turned out to be, yet again, stupidly simple. Every day, while I was writing out my little description of what I was going to write for the knowledge component of the triangle, I would play the scene through in my mind and try to get excited about it. I’d look for all the cool little hooks, the parts that interested me most, and focus on those since they were obviously what made the scene cool. If I couldn’t find anything to get excited over, then I would change the scene, or get rid of it entirely. I decided then and there that, no matter how useful a scene might be for my plot, boring scenes had no place in my novels.

This discovery turned out to be a fantastic one for my writing. I trashed and rewrote several otherwise perfectly good scenes, and the effect on the novel was amazing. Plus, my daily wordcount numbers shot up again because I was always excited about my work. Double bonus!

Life On 10k A Day

With all three sides of my triangle now in place, I was routinely pulling 10-12k per day by the time I finished Spirits’ End, the fifth Eli novel. I was almost 2 months ahead of where I’d thought I’d be, and the novel had only taken me 3 months to write rather than the 7 months I’d burned on the Spirit War (facts I knew now that I was keeping records). I was ahead of schedule with plenty of time to do revisions before I needed to hand the novel in to my editor, and I was happier with my writing than ever before. There were several days toward the end when I’d close my laptop and stumble out of the coffee shop feeling almost drunk on writing. I felt like I was on top of the world, utterly invincible and happier than I’ve ever been. Writing that much that quickly was like taking some kind of weird success opiate, and I was thoroughly addicted. Once you’ve hit 10k a day for a week straight, anything less feels like your story is crawling.

Now, again, 10k a day is my high point as a professional author whose child is now in daycare (PRICELESS). I write 6 – 7 hours a day, usually 2 in the morning and 4-5 in the afternoon, five days a week. Honestly, I don’t see how anyone other than a full time novelist could pull those kind of hours, but that doesn’t mean you have to be a pro to drastically increase your daily word count.

So 10k might be the high end of the spectrum, but of the people I’ve told about this (a lot) who’ve gotten back to me (not nearly as many), most have doubled their word counts by striving to hit all three sides of the triangle every time they write. This means some have gone from 1k a day to 2k, or 2k to 4k. Some of my great success with increasing my wordcount is undoubtedly a product of experience, as I also hit my million word mark somewhere in the fifth Eli novel. Even so, I believe most of the big leaps in efficiency came from changing the way I approached my writing. Just as changing your lifestyle can help you lose a hundred pounds, changing they way you sit down to write can boost your words per hour in astonishing ways.

If you’re looking to get more out of your writing time, I really hope you try my triangle. If you do, please write me (or comment below) and let me know. Even if it doesn’t work (especially if it doesn’t work) I’d love to hear about it. Also, if you find another efficiency hack for writing, let me know about that too! There’s no reason our triangle can’t be a square, and I’m always looking for a way to hit 15k a day :D.

Again, I really hope this helps you hit your goals. Good luck with your writing!

Do American family names make sense?

10000 word essay in a day

Dictionary of American Family Names, 2nd Edition

With over 10,000 new entries, the Dictionary of American Family Names, 2nd Edition is a major new edition of the standard reference work on American family name origins. It consists of 5 volumes.

  • By Peter McClure
  • April 12 th 2024

Do names really mean anything, even when they seem to? Individuals in present day America called Smith, Jackson, Washington , or Redhead are not usually smiths, sons of Jack, residents in Washington, or red-haired. The disconnect between sense and usage in these particular names is mainly the result of hereditary surnaming back in England and Scotland, but this is not its only source. Names change their shapes, get borrowed into different cultures, and are sometimes re-interpreted to mean something other than what they originally meant. The frozen food company, Birds Eye, took its brand name from the founder’s surname, Clarence Frank Birdseye II of Montclair, New Jersey. His family had migrated from England to Connecticut in the seventeenth century, and the name’s meaning as a nickname looks obvious. But when it is traced back in English historical records, Birdseye turns out to be a habitational name, an altered form of the Lancashire gentry surname Bardsley , which migrated to Buckinghamshire, England, in the fifteenth century and was simplified there from the sixteenth century onward to Bardsey , Berdsey , Burdsey , and Birdseye .

The underlying cause for the disconnect is that names, unlike words, don’t have to stay meaningful in order to do their job of identifying individuals or groups of people. In fact, most American family names make no sense at all today and it is fascinating to uncover their original meanings and what they tell us about the history of the people who bear them. Hereditary surnames are especially vulnerable to changes in pronunciation that obscure their original senses. Starbuck , for example, seems to be an altered form of Tarbuck , which is recorded in the thirteenth century as the surname of the family who were lords of Tarbock in Lancashire, England. In the 1630s, Edward Starbuck, a coloniser from Derbyshire, England, set up a whaling company on Nantucket Island. Herman Melville borrowed the surname for the chief mate of the whaling ship Pequod in his novel Moby Dick to give his incredible story an appearance of local veracity. It is this fictional character that the coffee chain is arbitrarily named for.

Absence of sense enables names to migrate easily from person to person and into other languages, where they can be further mangled or re-interpreted, nowhere more prolifically than in the United States. American family names have a unique diversity, the living evidence of a country founded on colonization, forced transportation (especially of West Africans), and influxes of refugees and economic migrants from across the globe. The latest edition of the Dictionary of American Family Names explains over 80,000 of them and includes 35 introductory essays written by experts from countries across the world.

Names as gateways into world history are full of surprises. Trump is a surname from Bavaria in Germany, where in medieval times the now obsolete word trumpe , “drum,” was adopted as a name for a drummer. (Donald Trump’s Scottish connection is on his mother’s side.) Biden probably derives from the place called Baydon in Wiltshire, England, and has been a family name in neighbouring Hampshire since the early fourteenth century. (Joe Biden’s Irish connection is on his mother’s side.) Mancini is from Italian mancino , a nickname for a left-handed person. Wang is chiefly Chinese, from a Romanized spelling of Mandarin and Cantonese words of many senses, including “king, royal” and “yellow, gold.”

Some family names have been created in America itself, where individuals whose own culture had no tradition of surnaming found themselves legally required to have one. Migrants from Muslim countries and from parts of the Indian subcontinent have commonly opted for one of their own personal names. The Dictionary explains that the surname Abdullah , with over 8,000 bearers in the 2010 US census, is an Arabic personal name ‘Abdullāh , “servant of God.” Murthy , with 1,268 bearers in 2010, is from southwest India, where it is a personal name from the Sanskrit murti , “manifestation, image,” that of one of the gods, Rama or Krishna.

Among Native Americans, a different solution was to use their personal name in an English translation. The Cheyenne Mo’ohnah’evaoo’etse , “Elk stands with his wife,” refers to the habit of elks standing shoulder to shoulder, and was Americanized as the surname Elkshoulder . The most common American surname actually in a Native American language is Begay , with 17,533 bearers in the 2010 census. It is an Anglicized spelling of the Navajo word biye’ , “his son,” which was originally part of a longer personal name, coming after the father’s name. It was imposed on Navajos by white officials, who mistook it for a surname. Some Native Americans adopted the surname of a colonial administrator. Abeyta is a Hispanic surname mostly found among the Pueblos of New Mexico, where in the 1690s a Spaniard, Diego de Abeytia (or de Beitia), was involved in its recolonization. His surname referred to a place called Beitia in Biscay, Basque Country, in northern Spain.

But most Native Americans assimilated to Anglo-American culture by doing what most of the freed slaves of West African heritage did—borrowing an existing, commonplace surname like Smith or Johnson . An alternative strategy favored by African Americans was to take the surname of an admired figure, such as Lincoln, Jefferson, Jackson , or Washington . The Dictionary reveals time and again that the Englishness of an American surname is not a safe guide to the ethnicity or heritage of its bearers. Immigrants, too, often adapted to their new country through the translation or assimilation an existing non-English name into an English near-equivalent. Yet more sources of Smith are Dutch Smit , German and Jewish Schmidt , and Slavic Koval . Dutch Timmerman was sometimes translated into the English Carpenter , French Boulanger into Baker , and German Goldwasser into Goldwater .

The Ashkenazic Jewish name Kaplan , from German Kaplan or Polish kapłan , “chaplain, curate,” was already a translation of Cohen , from Hebrew kohen , “priest,” before it was assimilated in the American composer’s family to Copland , an English habitational name from either of two northern English place-names. Assimilated name-forms have created countless similar examples of misleading appearances. Sharkey is usually Irish, a shortened, Anglicized form of the Gaelic Ó Searcaigh , “descendant of Searcach,” from a nickname meaning “beloved,” but it is also an American garbling of French Chartier “carter.”

Family histories can resolve some of the uncertainties. Morton looks English or Scottish, a habitational name from one of the places so named, and it often is . George Morton of Nottinghamshire, England, was one of the Mayflower pilgrim fathers. But, as the Dictionary explains, the name has several other origins as anAmericanization of Swedish, Finnish, French, and Jewish names. John Morton, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, had a Finnish grandfather called Martti Marttinen— “Martin Martin’s son”— who moved to Sweden, where his name was Scandinavianized as Mårten Mårtensson ,pronounced Mortenson , and then to America, where his surname was shortened to Morton .

Another way in which the Dictionary disambiguates the origins of a family name is to note the forenames associated with it in US telephone directories. Lee , with nearly 700,000 bearers in the 2010 census, is the standout instance of an English habitational name that was re-purposed to assimilate names from other languages. They include one each from Irish and Norwegian and six from Romanized forms of Chinese and other Southeast Asian languages in Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar. The surname is famous as that of a Shropshire family that migrated from England to Virginia in the early seventeenth century and whose descendants were prominent in the American Revolution and the Civil War. But some of its forenames in America—Young, Sang, Jae, Jong, Jung, Sung, Yong, Kyung, Seung, Dong, Kwang, Myung—alert us to other histories, of later migrations from Southeast Asia.

Is it ever safe to take an American family name at face value? Often yes, even if all you can be sure of is that the name, whatever its original sense, belongs to a specific group of people. But, as you have seen from the names I’ve picked out for discussion, appearances can be very deceptive.

Inside Donald Trump’s Embrace of the Jan. 6 Rioters

The former president initially disavowed the attack on the Capitol, but he is now making it a centerpiece of his general election campaign.

Two days before former President Donald J. Trump was booked at an Atlanta jail on his fourth indictment, he held an event at his golf club in New Jersey for another group of people facing criminal charges: rioters accused of storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Standing next to a portrait of himself portrayed as James Bond, Mr. Trump told the defendants and their families that they had suffered greatly, but that all of that would change if he won another term.

“People who have been treated unfairly are going to be treated extremely, extremely fairly,” he said to a round of applause at the event last August in Bedminster, N.J. “What you’ve suffered is just ridiculous,” he added. “But it’s going to be OK.”

That private event was emblematic of how Mr. Trump has embraced dozens of Jan. 6 defendants and their relatives and highlights how he has sought to undermine law enforcement when it suits him, while he also puts forth a law-and-order campaign.

Recently, however, his celebrations of the Capitol riot and those who took part in it have become more public as he has promoted a revisionist history of the attack and placed it at the heart of his 2024 presidential campaign.

Despite the nearly 1,000 guilty pleas and convictions that have been secured in criminal cases stemming from Jan. 6, Mr. Trump has repeatedly described the rioters who broke into the Capitol as “hostages” and has started to open his campaign events with a recording of riot defendants singing the national anthem from their jail cells.

He has highlighted the work of the so-called Freedom Corner, a vigil of activists and rioters’ family members who have gathered nearly nightly for almost two years outside the jail in Washington where some of the most violent rioters are being held. This year, when it seemed as if Mr. Trump would go on trial in Washington on charges related to Jan. 6, his aides discussed the idea of him visiting that jail, according to a person familiar with the discussions who was not authorized to speak publicly. The plan was put off after the trial was delayed.

By doing all of this, Mr. Trump has risked radicalizing his most die-hard supporters even further, encouraging them to repeat events like those that unfolded on Jan. 6.

“It normalizes violence as a legitimate solution to political grievances,” said Robert Pape, a scholar at the University of Chicago who has studied American political violence in the wake of the Capitol attack. “And so it makes it more likely that politically angry people will resort to it.”

Trump Makes the Capitol Attack a General Election Issue

Most politicians would likely have avoided focusing on an episode that shocked the nation as Jan. 6 did, and that polling consistently has shown alienates swing voters. But Mr. Trump has paid increasingly more attention to Jan. 6 in his general election campaign.

Mr. Trump’s attention to Jan. 6 has provided President Biden with a political opportunity. Mr. Biden recently invited two Capitol Police officers who were attacked by the mob to speak at one of his own campaign events. As part of his message of seeking to protect democracy, he has repeatedly described the assault on the Capitol as one of the country’s darkest days.

“Trump said that there was ‘a lot of love’ on January the 6th,” Mr. Biden said in a January speech at Valley Forge, Pa. “The rest of the nation, including law enforcement, saw a lot of hate and violence.”

Still, Mr. Trump has a long history of creating alternate versions of reality when it works to his advantage. And as he has struggled to expand his voting coalition over three campaigns, he seems to have recognized that issues surrounding Jan. 6 motivate his base. The subject has helped him strengthen the bond he shares with his supporters by painting them as he likes to paint himself — as victims of a federal law enforcement system run amok.

“I do think he is sincerely concerned about us and our families, and I don’t think he’s doing it just for political reasons,” said Will Pope of Kansas, who attended the Bedminster event and has been accused of, among other things, jamming a flagpole into the Senate carriage doors as the police were trying to close them.

“He’s picked up on the growing concern about the Justice Department and the government in general going hard against American citizens,” he added.

Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for Mr. Trump’s campaign, said the Justice Department under Mr. Biden had spent more time prosecuting Jan. 6 defendants and Mr. Trump than “criminals, illegal immigrants and terrorists.” She added, “President Trump will restore justice for all Americans who have been unfairly treated by Joe Biden’s two-tier system of justice.”

How Trump Has Flipped on the Capitol Riot

Mr. Trump hasn’t always embraced Jan. 6 — at least not openly.

Prodded by his advisers, he publicly disavowed the attack within days of the Capitol being stormed, even though behind closed doors he strongly resisted saying the election was over, according to the House select committee that investigated the attack.

Soon, however, Mr. Trump began to echo the growing attempts to revise the history of the Capitol attack. In doing so, he often followed the lead of far-right lawmakers, including Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, who were in turn following the lead of a small but vocal group of right-wing journalists and activists.

Mr. Trump’s embrace of Jan. 6 not only has meant describing the attack in which more than 100 police officers were injured as a “love fest.” It also has led him to tell a journalist that he wanted to march to the Capitol that day but that his team had prevented him from doing so.

At a rally in Texas in January 2022, Mr. Trump, while teasing his eventual presidential bid, said he would consider pardoning those involved in the assault if he were re-elected — a promise he has often repeated.

A pivotal moment in Mr. Trump’s reversal on the attack came six months later.

In July 2022, one of his aides, Liz Harrington, reached out to Julie Kelly, a conservative journalist who has written extensively about the Capitol attack and the defendants charged with taking part in it.

Ms. Harrington asked what Mr. Trump could do “to bail these people out,” Ms. Kelly recalled. She replied that while there was little he could do about their bail, Mr. Trump should educate himself about the larger legal issues surrounding Jan. 6. Ms. Kelly proposed a meeting with Cynthia Hughes, the founder of the Patriot Freedom Project, a prominent Jan. 6 legal defense fund.

Mr. Trump’s aides initially balked at the idea of sitting down with Ms. Hughes, Ms. Kelly recalled. Ms. Hughes’s nephew, Timothy Hale-Cusanelli, was facing charges stemming from the Capitol attack, but he was also an avowed Nazi sympathizer who liked to take pictures of himself dressed as Hitler.

In the end, however, Ms. Kelly and Ms. Hughes were granted an audience with Mr. Trump at Bedminster in September 2022. Ms. Kelly said that she told the former president he was not doing enough to support the Jan. 6 defendants and that they felt abandoned by him. The two women also told Mr. Trump that some of the federal judges he had put on the bench were “among the worst” when it came to handling the hundreds of criminal cases stemming from the Capitol attack.

After the meeting, Mr. Trump gave $10,000 to Ms. Hughes’s organization. Around the same time, he told the conservative radio host Wendy Bell, “I’m financially supporting people that are incredible, and they were in my office actually two days ago.” Mr. Trump later gave a video statement of support at one of the organization’s fund-raising events at a hotel in Washington.

“People have been treated unconstitutionally, in my opinion, and very, very unfairly, and we’re going to get to the bottom of it,” he said in the video.

Mr. Trump also called Micki Witthoeft, the mother of Ashli Babbitt, a rioter who was shot and killed by a Capitol Police lieutenant on Jan. 6 and who is viewed by many on the right as a kind of political martyr.

“He said he talks about Ashli and he thinks about Ashli and that he has her on his heart,” Ms. Witthoeft said in an online video, in which she recounted the call with Mr. Trump at one of her nightly protests at the Freedom Corner.

Mr. Trump’s aides and congressional allies, like Ms. Taylor Greene, also got him interested in what they described as the poor conditions that Jan. 6 defendants were living under in the Washington jail. But those conditions long preceded the arrival of the rioters, and at this point the jail houses only about 15 or 20 of them.

By that point, Mr. Trump had hired Joanna Miller Wischer, a former aide to Peter Navarro, who was previously Mr. Trump’s White House trade adviser and is now in prison for contempt of Congress because he defied a subpoena from the Jan. 6 House committee . Ms. Wischer, whose involvement with Mr. Trump’s political action committee was first reported by the news organization Semafor , soon became an advocate of sorts within the campaign for Jan. 6 rioters.

Another issue helped to shape Mr. Trump’s thoughts on the Capitol attack and those who took part in it: the spectacle of the televised hearings that were held throughout that summer and fall by the Jan. 6 House committee. Mr. Trump was furious, according to a person with direct knowledge of his thinking, as he watched several of his former aides testify in public about his inability to admit defeat in the 2020 election and his inactivity in the face of the violence on Jan. 6.

How the Jan. 6 Prisoners Became ‘Hostages’

Mr. Trump’s use of the term “hostages” to describe those charged with taking part in the Capitol attack has been one of his most outlandish attempts to alter the history of Jan. 6. The word, at least as he has used it, expresses little beyond a baseless and distorted view that anyone who has been touched by the criminal justice system because of their roles in the riot has been treated unfairly.

During the Justice Department’s vast investigation of the Capitol attack, the number of defendants jailed before their trials has tended to hover around 5 or 10 percent of the total number charged. But that number has decreased significantly in recent months.

And the defendants jailed before their trials were among the most violent rioters, accused of shooting a pistol in the air while standing on scaffolding above the mob, plotting to murder the F.B.I. agents who investigated them and other serious crimes.

One of Mr. Trump’s associates said they realized that the former president started to use the term “hostages” in the months after he recorded a version of the “Star-Spangled Banner” with the so-called Jan. 6 Choir, a musical group composed of rioters serving time in the Washington jail. Mr. Trump has insisted on playing the song at some of his rallies and has also played it at times at Mar-a-Lago, his Florida residence, where, in some cases, diners on the patio rise during the display and put their hands over their hearts.

One of the recording’s producers was Kash Patel, a close aide to Mr. Trump who served in a top Defense Department role in the final days of his administration. Through a spokesman, Mr. Patel denied that he had any role in persuading Mr. Trump to use the word “hostages” in his speeches.

Last month at a campaign event in Ohio, Mr. Trump stood by as an announcer asked the crowd to rise for “the horribly and unfairly treated January 6th hostages.” Then, after saluting as a recording played, Mr. Trump repeated the word.

“You see the spirit from the hostages, and that’s where they are, is hostages,” Mr. Trump said, adding that the men were also “unbelievable patriots.”

Several critics, including some federal judges who have handled Jan. 6-related cases, have said that legitimizing the events of that day increased the risk that something similar could happen again.

A prominent judge in Washington, Royce C. Lamberth, earlier this month, while sentencing a man who assaulted the police on Jan. 6 to more than seven years in prison, worried aloud about Jan. 6 becoming “a precedent for further violence against political opponents or governmental institutions.”

“This is not normal,” Judge Lamberth said. “This cannot become normal. We as a community, we as a society, we as a country cannot condone the normalization of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.”
