Health Optimizing Physical Education 1 Quarters 1 and 2 – Module 1: The Healthiest and Fittest ME

This module was designed and made to enlighten you with how you should maintain and keep a fit body in order to have a healthy mind. At the end of the quarter, you are going to do physical and recreational activities that are aligned with health-related fitness and skills related activities. Through this module, you will also clearly understand the proper eating habits. You are also expected to learn ways to improve your personal eating habit that will lead you to become a physically fit individual.

Aligned with the curriculum, this module is focused on one lesson, that is:

  • Lesson 1 – Exercise, Eat, and Excel

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Demonstrate understanding of fitness and exercise in optimizing one’s health as habit, as requisite for physical activity performance and as a career opportunity

2. Lead fitness events with proficiency and confidence resulting in independent pursuit and in influencing others positively.

Physical Education and Health offers experiential learning for learners to adopt an active life for fitness and lifelong health. The knowledge, skills and understanding which include physical and health literacy competencies support them in accessing, synthesizing and evaluating information; making informed decisions; enhancing and advocating their own as well as others’ fitness and health.

This course on exercise for fitness enables the learner to set goals , monitor one’s participation in aerobic and muscle- and bone-strengthening activities and constantly evaluate how well one has integrated this into one’s personal lifestyle. It consists of an array of offerings which learners can choose from.

  • 5. Optimization of Energy System Energy comes from what we eat which are in the form of: 1. Carbohydrates- our muscles live and store carbohydrate in what is known as Glycogen. - is used as fuel by the body when it is broken down a glucose 2.Fat – it serves as insulation for the body to prevent heat loss. 3. Protein- used for the repair and growth of body tissue
  • 6. Health Behaviors, Health Risks factors, and Physical Activity ( PA) Health Behaviors: 1. Eating Behavior- proper nutrition, choice of food 2. Sleep- rest, sleep and relax 3. Stress management 4. Post –traumatic stress- caused by an unnaturally traumatic experiences, leading to the disruption of a person’s ability to cope and function effectively.
  • 7. Chronic stress- occurs someone experiences repeated and continuing demands that inhibit the person’s function. Health Risk factors: 1. Family history 2. cigarette smoking 3. hypertension ( high blood) 4. hypercholesterolemia ( high cholesterol count) 5. impaired fasting glucose levels (high blood sugar) 6. obesity 7. sedentary lifestyle ( Physical inactivity)
  • 8. Physical Activity Performance - Directly related to eating behaviors, rest, sleep, and relaxation, stress management, and health risk factors.
  • 9. How to Self assess health-related Fitness ( HRF) status? 1. Body composition ( Body Fat Percent)- refers to the ratio between lean body mass and fat body mass. 2. Muscular endurance- measures muscular strength 3. Cardio-respiratory endurance- response to submaximal workload heart rate, estimate maximal oxygen uptake,
  • 10. 4. Muscular strength- refers to the greatest amount of force that can be generated from a single maximal effort.( using of weights) 5. Flexibility- refers to the range of motion of a joint.
  • 11. How to set FITT goals based on training principles to achieve and/or maintain HRF. 1. OVERLOAD PRINCIPLE-relies on the premise that to improve, the muscles must produce work at a level that is higher than its regular workload. Frequency-refers to how often the exercise is done. Intensity- refers how hard the activity or exercise is. Time- refers to duration or how long the exercise will take. Type- refers to a kind of activity or exercise.

Progressive principle- means the body adapts to the initial over load, the overload must be adjusted and increase gradually. 3. recovery principle- adaptation to physical activity occurs gradually and naturally, but time must be allowed for the regenerate and build. 4. reversibility principle- all gains due to exercise will be lost if one does not continue exercise. 5. specificity principle- state that each form of the activity would produce different result. 6. variation principle- 7. individualization principle- 8. maintenance principle
  • 13. How to observe personal safety protocol 1. Dehydration- loss of fluid occur in exercise through sweat, breath and urine. 2. Overexertion- form of any exercise greater than the capacity of a individual to handle. 3. Hypothermia- training in a cold environment , condition of low core body temperature. 4. Hyperthermia- heat illness- is a product of loosing too much water heating up because of exercises.
  • 14. How to Organize Fitness event for a target health issue or concern 1. Identify a goal, target, or health issue to address. 2. Do your research 3. Identify a location or venue 4. Build your team

Students will learn a brief background about energy transfer between the sun, producers, primary consumers, and secondary consumers. ½ of the students are primary consumers (plants) and ¼ of the students are primary consumers (rabbits) and ¼ of the students are secondary consumers (hawks).

Using a deck of playing cards, the students will pick the number of reps for various exercises.

Students will practice listening skills and basic physical concepts as required in physical education class. Students will also work on balance and coordination.

Combining information about the speed of animals, the students will run laps in the gym or outdoors.

Basketball Relay

Students will practice teamwork, dribbling, and shooting a basketball.

Bear Hunt Obstacle Course

This plan will combine reading with balance and coordination skills to allow students to navigate a simple obstacle course.

Boom Over Movement Game

Students will play a game in which they need to change direction quickly. Students are to pretend that they are on a sailboat that is in the middle of a storm. They will have to run and change direction based on verbal commands and duck quickly to avoid being hit by the imaginary boom.

Butterfly Stretches

This lesson is designed to help students learn the importance and reasons for exercise through multiple activities and discussions.

Coordination Course

This plan will allow students to practice coordination while staying physical.

Multi-Ball Basketball

The student will participate in a game of basketball using various sizes of available balls.

Music Movement

The students will move to the music based on its beat, words, tune, and other variables.

On Top of Spaghetti

Pe immigration.

The students will research games and activities from other countries to share during a PE class.

Pass It Off

This lesson will allow students to practice passing, dribbling, and bouncing skills using basketballs

Plate Aerobics

Students will practice basic aerobics moves while trying to stay positioned on paper plates, this aids in coordination.

Race to the Answer

This lesson will allow students to practice teamwork, basic math skills, and get exercise through a relay race. Note: Problems/difficulty level can be altered by grade

Ride ‘Em Cowboy/girl

This lesson will allow students to practice gross motor skills.  

Students will practice listening skills and basic physical concepts as required in physical education class.

Ski to the Finish Line

This plan will allow students to practice coordination while staying physical. Students will demonstrate moving straight, backwards, and in a zig-zag pattern.

The New PE Class

The students will create a PE activity to share and demonstrate to peers.

This lesson will allow students to practice teamwork and trust building, as well as working on directionality for younger students.

What Time is it FOX?

The students play a game where they practice different movements including jumping, galloping, skipping, running, jogging, leaping, and walking. Based on National Physical Education Standards, students should have been learning these skills for the last 4 years.
