The major in economics provides the student with an understanding of economic problems and institutions and with analytical tools to apply this knowledge to contemporary problems. The program is designed for the student desiring a career in business, government, international agencies, or multinational corporations; and for those planning graduate study in economics, business, law, public administration, urban studies, or international relations.

Other Teaching Qualifications (Description of Required Academic Degree and Justifications 4   for the programs in Economics)

Consideration of other teaching qualifications in lieu of academic credentials is made on a case-by-case basis and accepted in special cases where evidence of exceptional experience, research or other qualifications can be documented and are directly applicable to the course being taught.

1 Whenever instructors are not credentialed by their advanced degree or by an approved CIP relationship, they must be credentialed through a narrative justification of the instructor's qualifications to teach this/these course(s). Such credentialing is based on the proposed instructor's academic and professional preparation; diplomas, certificates, or relevant licensures; publications and presentations in the field; honors, awards, and professional recognitions; and other demonstrated competencies, skills, and experiences which the instructor brings to the University. These must be clearly tied to the specific courses to be taught and should establish beyond doubt that the instructor is qualified to teach the specific courses they are to be assigned.

The Office of the Provost reviews all such justifications and where the justifications warrant the instructor's teaching the courses proposed, it will either approve the justification for the appropriate period (seven years for full-time faculty members, or four years for part-time faculty members) or employ one of two additional clearance categories beyond the advanced degree and related-discipline categories which it may use to credential some instructors where their accomplishments warrant this:

Active Research Clearance in the Discipline or Active Artistic/Special Talent Clearance in the Discipline

2 The level and discipline of the terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D., MS, MFA, doctorate) that is required to teach graduate courses in the discipline

3 For each discipline, all strongly-related degree(s) and/or equivalent names for the discipline (include level) that would also be appropriate for teaching at the graduate level

4 (1)The appropriate academic degrees and justifications for each related degree above if not obvious; (2) the justification for why the terminal degree is not a doctorate in a discipline, e.g., specific examples of best practice in the discipline and accrediting association language; and (3) any other criteria used to determine appropriate academic qualifications to teach specialty courses in the program.

The Ph.D. in economics program at the University of South Florida allows students to specialize in health economics and industrial organization as well as in other applied areas of microeconomics. This degree prepares students for careers as professional economists in academia, business and government.

Program Requirements

The program consists of required courses, field courses, and structured graduate electives. Upon completion of all coursework and passing of the First-Year and Second-Year qualifying examinations, students enter candidacy where they must successfully complete and defend a doctoral dissertation. Students must complete at least two field sequences from within economics. Each field sequence is comprised of two courses for a total of four field courses. The department currently offers fields in the economics of health care, industrial organization, labor economics, and urban and regional economics.

The choice of structured graduate electives will be made with advice and consent of either the PhD Director or the student’s (co-) Major Professor(s). These electives will be used to strengthen the student’s preparation to undertake independent research.

To be eligible to graduate, in addition to the requirements stated above, students must satisfy all Office of Graduate Studies graduation requirements such as maintaining an overall and economics GPA of at least 3.0 and meeting residency requirements.

Two funded opportunities under Sydney-Glasgow Joint PhD program

The University of Sydney’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the University of Glasgow’s College of Social Sciences have unveiled two new joint PhD projects, providing opportunities for aspiring PhD candidates from across the world to work alongside leading research supervisors. The successful candidates will be jointly enrolled at both institutions, with Glasgow as the home institution and the University of Sydney as the host institution.

The funded Joint PhD opportunities

The health and wellbeing impacts of the energy transition for low-income renters: a comparative uk-australia study .

This project will advance understanding of the health and well-being impacts for low-income renter households of energy transition measures proposed by governments, and design solutions to redress identified adverse impacts as integral to these proposed measures while also generating co-benefits more broadly for society. It will conduct a comparative study between two locations which are increasingly experiencing extreme weather events with significant adverse population impacts and have high concentrations of low- income renter households – Glasgow, Scotland and Sydney, Australia.

The Socio-Economic Impacts of Colonialisation in Australia

Since the early European settlements in the late 18th century, the economic history of Australia is very deeply linked to its colonisation. This project will create a rich dataset to measure the impact that British colonialisation had on its Australian colonies on a range of economic outcomes in the short and long run. Using British and Irish records of settlers, Australian arrival records and subsequent censuses, together with current and recent rich administrative health records and surveys, the project will:

measure the mortality, morbidity, and characteristics of settlers travelling to Australia in the short run and understand how the selection of surviving settlers still impacts the health of current Australians. 

 analyse the impact of the relative arrival of free versus convict settlers across different areas in Australian on the severity and incidence of indigenous massacres and current political views.

Award Details

The program will commence in October 2024. The funding is provided by the University of Glasgow and is available as a scholarship for the maximum of 3.25 years. The full funding package includes:

• An annual maintenance grant (stipend) at the UK Research and Innovation rate (UKRI).
• Tuition fees at the University of Glasgow (including fee-waiver at the University of Sydney).
• Successful candidates can also draw on a Research Training Support Grant, up to a maximum of approximately £940 per year.
• A one-off travel grant of up to £3,000 to facilitate the required travel between Glasgow and Sydney.

FIU’s standing in Florida education rises as its enrollment grows

The year 2024 will be monumental for Florida International University. In addition to continuing to top the Florida Performance-Based Funding Metrics, we anticipate FIU will be named a Preeminent State University by the Florida Board of Governors at its June meeting.

Established by the Florida Legislature, Preeminence is a designation earned by Florida’s public universities based on their performance in 13 metrics, including 4-year graduation rates, retention rates, research expenditures, number of National Academy Members and patent production. FIU will join Florida State University, University of Florida, and University of South Florida as preeminent universities.

Preeminent universities are eligible to receive dedicated funding including money to recruit and retain world-class faculty. We are grateful that the Florida Legislature and Governor Ron DeSantis have invested in our public universities, providing quality and access while allowing tuition to remain among the lowest in the nation and our students to graduate with very low debt, if any. 

This year, the State University System universities will share $350 million in Performance-Based Funding, and $100 million in excellence funding to recruit and retain world-class faculty. The four preeminent universities will share an additional $100 million.

U.S. News and World Report recognized two FIU professional schools: The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine is ranked #2 Most Diverse Medical School. And FIU’s College of Law climbed 38 spots to reach #60 among the nation’s law schools (No. 32 among public schools).

FIU also is among the top 5 U.S. doctoral institutions in producing the most Fulbright U.S. Scholars in 2023-24.

FIU is classified as a Carnegie R1 “very high research activity” university, a classification only five other universities in Florida have achieved: UF, FSU, UM, USF and UCF. And it is leading the way nationally with one of the fastest-growing research programs. Hispanic and Black students earn 86 percent of the bachelor’s degrees awarded by FIU.
