GHOST RIDER: Marvel Comics Confirms Plans To Introduce A NEW Spirit Of Vengeance With First Look Teaser

GHOST RIDER: Marvel Comics Confirms Plans To Introduce A NEW Spirit Of Vengeance With First Look Teaser

Marvel Comics is once again relaunching Ghost Rider , with a new character set to inherit the mantle of "Spirit of Vengeance," following in the footsteps of Johnny Blaze, Danny Ketch, and Robbie Reyes...

It's been announced today that a new Ghost Rider is coming to the Marvel Universe. Johnny Blaze, Danny Ketch, and Robbie Reyes are among those to have previously held the mantle, of course, but it's unclear who will be next to find themselves bonded with the Spirit of Vengeance.

In terms of the Ghost Rider 's creative team, Benjamin Percy will be on writing duties and Danny Kim is set to illustrate the relaunched series.

Marvel Comics hasn't released any additional details. However, the cover below was accompanied by a brief blurb which reads, "Rev your engines for a new era of Ghost Rider from writer Benjamin Percy and artist Danny Kim coming in March 2024. Learn more in the coming weeks."

Earlier this year, Percy told Marvel.com  about growing up as a fan of the iconic supernatural character.

"I moved all over as a kid, and I was often living in rural areas, so I rarely had a comic book shop I could visit with any regularity," he said.  "But when I did get to a store, I’d be pulling back issues of Ghost Rider from the dusty bins. And at garage sales and convenience stores, I was always drawn to the horror titles. That flaming skull is the coolest design in comics."

As for his approach to mixing superheroes with horror, Percy added, "My brain is hard-wired for horror. I probably rented as many horror VHS tapes as a kid as I ate grilled cheese sandwiches, so it’s just part of my creative DNA. No matter what I’m writing - take a look at Wolverine (2020) and X-Force (2019) - it bends toward the upsetting, the dreadful, the uncanny."

The first Ghost Rider was stunt motorcyclist Johnny Blaze, who, to save the life of his foster father, agrees to give his soul to "Satan" (later revealed to be Mephisto). When he senses evil, Blaze finds his flesh consumed by hellfire, causing his head to become a flaming skull. He rides a fiery motorcycle and wields blasts of hellfire from his body, usually from his skeletal hands.

Danny Ketch became the new Ghost Rider after his sister was injured by ninja gangsters. He gained his powers after coming into contact with a motorcycle that contained the essence of a Spirit of Vengeance and later learned that Johnny is his long-lost sibling. Years later, Robbie Reyes inherited the mantle but ditched the bike for a muscle car.

Check out this first look at the new Ghost Rider comic book series below.

WHO IS THE NEW SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE?

David Brooke

Marvel Comics has released a teaser for Ghost Rider #1, a new relaunch for the character. Benjamin Percy will continue to write with artist Danny Kim joining him on art and Juan Ferreyra supplying a rad cover. Percy and Cory Smith originally relaunched Ghost Rider back in February 2022 .

The teaser is scarce in details, although it does beg the question, “Who is the Spirit of Vengeance?” which seems to suggest the identity could be changing. Marvel promises more details in the coming weeks.

Check out the full teaser below, along with art by Ferreyra below!

Screen Rant

New ghost rider will replace the original in 2024, marvel announces.

2024 begins a new era for the Spirit of Vengeance, as Ghost Rider #1 empowers a new hero with Marvel's ultimate demonic force.

  • A new Ghost Rider is coming to Marvel Comics, marking the beginning of a fresh era for the Spirit of Vengeance.
  • Talia Warroad, a former SHIELD agent and ally of Johnny Blaze, is the likely candidate to become the next Spirit of Vengeance.
  • Ghost Rider #1 is coming March 2024, from Benjamin Percy and Danny Kim.

A new Ghost Rider is coming to Marvel Comics, as the publisher teases a fresh era for the Spirit of Vengeance. Ever since the mammoth-riding caveman hero of 1,000,000 BC, there has been a Ghost Rider in Marvel lore, and now a new hero will take up the mantle.

In a new press release, Marvel has revealed that March 2024 will see the beginning of a new Ghost Rider series from Benjamin Percy and Danny Kim. So far, very little is known, but Marvel has shared Juan Ferreyra's cover, along with the phrase "Who is the new Spirit of Vengeance?"

Currently, the Ghost Rider title is held by its most iconic and original bearer, the former stunt driver Johnny Blaze. However, as Blaze tangles with the Cult of Mephisto, things are about to change. Marvel says:

Rev your engines for a new era of GHOST RIDER from writer Benjamin Percy and artist Danny Kim coming in March 2024. Learn more in the coming weeks.

X-Men's Most Underrated Hero Killed Ghost Rider in One Hit

A new ghost rider takes the mantle, johnny blaze's fight against the cult of mephisto will have consequences.

The Spirit of Vengeance is an ancient spirit that embodies the cosmic need to punish evil deeds, and has almost limitless power to visit suffering on the deserving. However, the Spirit is so powerful and so ruthless, it requires a human host to balance its thirst for revenge with morality and compassion - otherwise, it would avenge every minor moment of misbehavior with hellfire. As Marvel's most potent demonic force, Mephisto has repeatedly meddled with the Spirit of Vengeance's path, and now it seems the Cult of Mephisto will carry on this grand tradition, with the summary for the upcoming Ghost Rider #21 speculating what stopping the cult means for the future of the Ghost Rider, and asking "Could this be the end of an era?" Jan Bazaldua's cover art shows Johnny Blaze's flaming head going out in a plume of smoke.

Talia Warroad Is the Obvious Candidate for New Ghost Rider

Johnny blaze's ally may be destined for the role.

The most obvious candidate to become the next Spirit of Vengeance is Talia Warroad . A former SHIELD agent and paranormal investigator, Talia has been working with Ghost Rider to bring down major supernatural threats, having been drawn to Blaze through a series of supernatural visions. It would make sense for these visions to have been telling Talia more than she realized, and actually predicting her future as the next host of the Spirit of Vengeance.

Strangely, if Talia does become Ghost Rider, she will be the second former SHIELD agent to replace a lethal Marvel hero in months - assassin Joe Garrison just became Marvel's new Punisher , following Frank Castle's exile to Weirdworld. Ghost Rider and Punisher have a long history of working together, and it would be cool to see Talia and Joe team-up as the deadly 'new kids' in the Marvel Universe.

Punisher and Ghost Rider have the same cosmic origin. Defenders Beyond revealed the existence of 'Of-Vengeance' - an archetypal god from an earlier version of the universe. Of-Vengeance is the mystical forerunner to Ghost Rider and Punisher, and the design of each hero comes from the skull-headed god .

Who is the new Ghost Rider, will they be a hero, and what vehicle will they choose for this new era of adventure? Marvel promises more news in the weeks to come, as a new Ghost Rider takes their place in Marvel lore.

Ghost Rider #1 is coming March 2024.

I think the highest complement I can pay this new Ghost Rider book is that the first issue made me want to read more. I can't speak as to how well it fits what came before, but Percy and Smith are firing on all cylinders, in my estimation. This series promises to be a wild ride. Read Full Review

Finally, I thought the script was excellent. Comics that contain both good writing and good artwork are always a pleasure to read, and Im glad that my first Ghost Rider comic was one such. Read Full Review

Overall, Ghost Rider #1 is a great first issue that will remind fans of Wandavision but much scarier. The story by Percy is excellent. The art by creative team is astonishing. Altogether, this comic is definitely what nightmares are made of. Read Full Review

If Percy and Smith can maintain the tone they set with Ghost Rider #1, this is going to be a must-read run from start to finish. Read Full Review

One of the best Ghost Rider comics Ive read in a long while, this book plays to strengths of its creative team while delivering a smart take on superhero horror comics. Read Full Review

A solid return for a character who should get more love than he currently does. This may change that…. Johnny Blaze, the original and still the best. Read Full Review

A restart or rebirth of sorts, this book takes back the Ghost Rider horror element after having Robbie Reyes in the Avengers. I like Robbie's Rider fine, but to me Johnny Blaze is always Ghost Rider, the same way that Bruce Wayne will always be Batman, and before anyone asks, no it has nothing to do with sharing names! A great start and a welcome return to a character that has been on the sidelines for way too long! Read Full Review

The slow burn of the first 10-12 pages will frustrate some GR readers who will want the actual to start fast and furious, but it works from the point of view of Johnny as a victim of both the Rider and the creatures that are torturing him. Read Full Review

Ghost Rider #1 is a reawakening for Johnny Blaze, working out old traumas in fresh forms. It's a great blend of relatable unease with suburban life and the horrors rising up, sometimes literally from Hell. Read Full Review

Ghost Rider #1 kicks off a slow-burning and horror-laced mystery that also doubles as a celebration of the hell-powered hero's 50th anniversary. Readers of Immortal Hulk andVenom, rejoice: your next big Marvel horror classic is here. And whether this is your first or latest Ghost Rider tale, it serves as a great introduction to Johnny Blaze. Read Full Review

An absolute ride from start to finish, Ghost Rider #1 is the exact kind of heavy metal insanity you want and need from a comic starring Marvel's Spirit of Vengeance. Read Full Review

Ghost Rider #1 is a solid start that has me diving back into a character I haven't really been interesting in for about 30 years. There's something about this start that reminds me of that 90s run that I grew up with and remember devouring when it hit the shelves. There's a lot of promise here and a debut that might put this classic character back in the spotlight where he belongs. Read Full Review

Johnny's new life seems like it should be perfect, which makes it creepy as all hell even BEFORE the other shoe drops. This is a nice reintroduction to Marvel's original flame-headed biker. Read Full Review

There is a lot you can do with a character like Ghost Rider but there are demands by long-time fans as well. Percy basically gives into the standards that people want from the character with the foundation here and that's fine. It assuages them while leaving open what you can do next. The next is what's important in the long run (as long as a Marvel series is these days) and I'm curious to see if Percy can capitalize on it or just stick to the familiar. With Cory Smith and Bryan Valenza on board for the artwork, it'll look pretty great – especially with all the demonic elements – and that makes it worth keeping up with alone. But the potential is all here and I'm curious to see what Zeb and Talia will bring to the story when given a chance to breathe. Read Full Review

Smith's lineart is ideal for a story such as this, and when combined with moody colors from Bryan Velenza, a dark and gritty issue of Ghost Rider is delivered. Read Full Review

An excellent issue, and a very well done first issue. Percy hits where he needs to, and where he doesn't really need to he hits harder. Cory Smith's pages will scare you, but not gross you out. A very entertaining read. Read Full Review

THE DISPATCHIts been a long time since weve seen Johnny Blaze as the GHOST RIDER and Benjamin Percy dives right in with a cold open that makes fans quickly wonder what the $&@&s going on?! The focus of GHOST RIDER #1 lends itself to a character study about Johnny Blaze and the struggles of being the Spirit of Vengeance. However, under the surface, Percy found himself scratching the veneer towards mental health issues and the emptiness thats so hard to explain deep within those inner quarrels of the soul. How is it that on the outside you have everything but still feel so hollow like you have nothing? Read Full Review

Bits and PiecesGhost Rider #1 is a serviceable albeit frustrating start to a new run from Benjamin Percy. There's very little Ghost Rider in the story, and the mystery surrounding Johnny Blaze is not mystery at all. On the positive side, the art is excellent and isn't afraid to lean on the horror and gore. Read Full Review

This is one of the best first issues in any mainstream comic in a long time.

comic book ghost rider new

Wow! Probably the best ghost rider comic I've ever read! What a fantastic and twisted story. Benjamin Percy is on fire right now!

Great start to a new series! This felt like I was reading Ghost Rider from the 90s again. I’m enjoying the supernatural horror presented.

I don't have time to write anything but I read it just now and absolutely loved it. Corey Smith is amazing. I can't wait to see what happens in this run.

Dialogue. Great. Art from Cory Smith is absolutely insane. I would agree with a previous commenter that it read like an issue #0, but it made up for that nitpick in execution. I am adding this to my pull list.

Bit of a slow burn out of the gates, happy to see blaze back in the saddle. Im hoping the horror story vibe can keep up for the run. Lets see where this goes, right now this is shaping up to be a must read ghost rider series. Hopefully it doesn't get randomly cancelled this time.

Sometimes my shop gets their books in early, since I've been with them so long they'll let me pick up on Tuesday instead of Wednesday.

comic book ghost rider new

It's creepy and gross in the right ways, and it's all laid down with solid words and art. The execution isn't quite good enough to convince me that all the pieces matter, though; much of what's on the page comes across as nasty for the sake of nasty. Although, devil's advocate: I also see that *a lot* of the nasty is carefully planned and foreshadowed. This doesn't want to be the Immortal Hulk, but it wants to be *as good* as the Immortal Hulk. Although that's an impossibly high bar and this comic doesn't quite clear it, it's still damned good.

It was good enough but, it's going to need more moving forward to keep me invested.

This is a solid first issue. I'm wondering how this reboot of sorts of the character plays out. When will the crushing, dumb continuity of Ghost Rider seep into this back to basics story? I guess we'll see.

It was okay. Slow story, but decent and the art was adequate. I will come back for the next issue, as I am a fan of the Johnny Blaze, Ghost Rider.

Introducing Robbie Reyes: The All-New Ghost Rider Omnibus

May 17, 2021 by Sara Century Leave a Comment

comic book ghost rider new

The Ghost Rider has been one of the most prominent spooky antiheroes of mainstream comics since way back in 1972, and it’s hard to imagine a Marvel Universe without him creeping around its edges and popping in for the occasional crossover. Though Johnny Blaze was the original and Danny Ketch was his predecessor, there are countless other Ghost Riders that have never been explored at length.

When Marvel’s All-New line was in its planning stages, they approached writer and artist Felipe Smith to create a new Ghost Rider with the stipulations that he had to be young and he needed to drive a car rather than a motorcycle. Out of these sparse guidelines, Robbie Reyes was born. A Ghost Rider with a unique powerset and a troubled relationship with the spirit of a serial killer that he has been bonded with, Reyes brought a whole new edge to the Ghost Rider mythos in Ghost Rider: Robbie Reyes – The Complete Collection , while keeping the visual and thematic appeal of the character fully intact.

Collects: All-New Ghost Rider #1 to #12, Ghost Rider #1 to #5, What If? Ghost Rider (2018) #1

Meet the (All-New) Ghost Rider

Robbie Reyes is a young man trying to juggle the demands of high school with that of his under-the-table job as a mechanic. On top of this, he has to provide for his disabled younger brother Gabe, caring for him the way a parent would. When Robbie feels at his lowest after seeing his kid brother beaten up by bullies one day, he decides to “borrow” a car from the auto shop where he works to compete in a street race. Hoping to score big to pay for his brother’s care, Robbie ends up in a car chase with who he thinks are police, but turn out to be men working to retrieve mysterious bags of pink pills that were hidden in the car for none other than Dr. Zabo, perhaps best known as his alter ego Mr. Hyde. Robbie is killed, and the Ghost Rider rises up in his stead.

The arc that introduces us to Robbie Reyes (and his demonic serial killer counterpart Eli Morrow) is very violent, which causes some dissonance because it’s ostensibly aimed at a younger audience than some of the other horror-adjacent Marvel books. Gabe suffers multiple violent attacks and Robbie is shot to death. There are allusions to a young woman being roofied at a party and there’s casual bone snapping in fights. The tone changes as the series goes on, but there is some pretty visceral stuff in here.

The upside of some of the more hyperviolent moments of the book is that it shows us a very different Ghost Rider than any that we’ve known before. Unlike Blaze or Ketch, Reyes physically died to become the demon, and his connection with his Spirit of Vengeance is rocky and unpredictable—even by Ghost Rider standards. Eli tries to play with Robbie’s head by insisting that only extreme violent acts like setting the city aflame will cause real change, making him a perfect counterpart to the troubled Robbie. That’s how it is that with very little textual explanation of Robbie’s situation, we still get an excellent sense of who he is as a person. Though he distrusts others and turns his heart cold to suffering in order to focus on providing a better life for his brother, he is ultimately driven by the desire to step up and be a better person.

Ghost Rider, Meet Ghost Rider

One of the more entertaining parts of the second half of All-New Ghost Rider is, of course, the team-up with Johnny Blaze. Johnny kicks off the meeting with the standard superhero fight, but tells Robbie that he senses great evil in him. He does his research and is actually the one who reveals to Robbie that his demon, Eli, was a monster in his own life who has now learned how to inhabit the bodies of others.

Though Robbie and Johnny meet in a standard hero vs. hero brawl, they end up as friends, and they have an interesting dynamic. Johnny’s celebrity-driven early years and subsequent disillusionment with fame must seem like something out of a movie for Robbie, who lived a life of poverty and trying to make ends meet. Whereas Johnny made a deal with the devil out of his own misguided good intentions and naive worldview, Robbie’s bottom line was survival in a world that set him up to fail. Indeed, when Johnny asks him if he was sure he didn’t sell his soul to the devil, Robbie retorts that only an absolute fool would do something like that, to which Johnny has no response. Regardless of their comical personality clash, Johnny makes it very clear that he’s always around if Robbie needs him, noting, “You’re one of us.”

From beginning to end, though, All-New Ghost Rider is the story of Robbie’s relationship with Gabe. He forgets Gabe a couple of times due to Ghost Rider hijinks, and when Gabe witnesses Eli possess his brother and become violent, he immediately knows something is wrong. Gabe temporarily becomes a monster, but Robbie, helpless and confessing that he would never hurt Gabe on purpose and will always try to be a better brother to him, is able to talk him down.

Better Together

Here we pivot to Ghost Rider , a five-issue series that revolves around an unlikely team-up with All-New Wolverine, Honey Badger, Totally Awesome Hulk, and, of course, All-New Ghost Rider. This could have been an ongoing Champions series and I would have bought every issue because this cast is just plain fun and their chemistry as friends is through the roof. Amadeus Cho’s never-ending quips and monologues are the perfect match to Robbie’s brooding cynicism, while the sister team of All-New Wolverine provide violence, optimism, and down-to-earth pragmatism. The villain of the story is an out-of-control absorbing creature, and its general chaotic nature gives the heroes ample opportunity for truly delightful character growth. Smith’s at his best here as he gets to exercise his dialogue-writing skills in a way the All-New Ghost Rider format didn’t fully allow for. This is a hugely underrated book.

comic book ghost rider new

This omnibus doesn’t collect all the Robbie Reyes stories (for instance, Ghost Racers and the online-only X-Mas Special are both absent), but it does collect Smith’s work on the character. As Reyes becomes more in control of the Ghost Rider, Smith seems to click with him better and better. Meanwhile, the incredible art teams helped accentuate the genuinely fresh feel of these stories. Tradd Moore’s sleek linework gave us some incredible car chase scenes while legendary Cassandra Cain-era Batgirl artist Daimon Scott adds his flair for hand-to-hand combat and cityscapes to his issues of the book. Felipe Smith’s covers for the Ghost Rider miniseries have an incredible sense of fluid motion while the interiors by Danilo S. Beyruth makes for a classic “meet the gang” style superhero story.

This book is truly incredible, and it injected a ton of life and energy into the Ghost Rider franchise when it was most desperately needed. Swapping out tried-and-true staples for a new approach was a prudent move, and these stories manage to perfectly capture everything that makes Ghost Rider fun while giving a highly charismatic protagonist in Robbie. The fight scenes become only more interesting with the car as we learn that Robbie can quite literally become one with it, and the stylish art sells even the most chaotic parts of the story. Even for long time Ghost Rider fans like me, this book was nothing short of a breath of fresh air, making Robbie Reyes easily one of Marvel’s most exciting new characters of the last decade.

Ghost Rider: Pivoting to a New Spirit of Vengeance Might Not Be the Best Idea

There's supposedly a new Spirit of Vengeance coming to the Marvel Universe, but this might not be what the Ghost Rider franchise needs right now.

  • The introduction of a new Ghost Rider may further fracture the already divided fanbase, as different characters have their own set of fans vying for the spotlight.
  • There are already too many Ghost Riders, which dilutes the concept of the Spirit of Vengeance and devalues the uniqueness and special status of each character.
  • The latest Ghost Rider series featuring Johnny Blaze failed to revitalize the character and left fans disappointed, making the introduction of a new character seem unnecessary and illogical.

The legacy of Marvel's Ghost Rider has been unleashing hell on wheels since the Bronze Age, with the "first" of these accursed motorists being Johnny Blaze. Since then, there have been several other Ghost Riders, with some coming long before Blaze was ever on the scene. Now, there's a new Spirit of Vengeance about to be introduced, but this might not be the best course of action for the franchise.

The Ghost Rider legacy is one of several in comic books that's resulted in a somewhat fractured fanbase. Different characters have their own fans, with each vying for the spotlight and many times failing to receive it. This can only fracture more nascent properties, and it doesn't help given the previous developments of the Ghost Rider brand. Thus, the new character may end up being a few wheels too many.

Marvel Is Introducing a New Ghost Rider

Marvel spotlights spirit rider and wyatt wingfoot in variant covers for native american heritage month.

Marvel Comics has recently announced a relaunch of Ghost Rider , with the series' first issue releasing in March 2024. So far, there's not a lot known about the exact story, but the preview material teases the introduction of a new Spirit of Vengeance. This is the title that the Ghost Riders bear, with most of them being possessed by supernatural (and usually demonic) entities. Thus, the upcoming "new" Ghost Rider will seemingly suffer the same fate, replacing Johnny Blaze as the current Spirit of Vengeance.

Many suspect that the new Spirit of Vengeance might be Talia Warroad, a former agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. who began investigating the supernatural. The covers for the new series feature Talia in prominent roles, which further strengthens this theory. If this is true, it's still unsure if she'll completely replace Johnny Blaze entirely. If that's the case, it only adds to the mantle's biggest issue, which is also one shared by other legacy characters.

There are Already Too Many Ghost Riders

Ghost rider's live-action debut underused a powerful (but forgettable) villain.

While it makes sense that there are multiple Ghost Riders, it's inarguable that there are simply too many of them at the moment. Without even counting predecessors from other time periods, such as Carter Slade (the Old West Ghost Rider), there's Johnny Blaze, Danny Ketch, Alejandra Jones and Robbie Reyes. Johnny is the "main" Ghost Rider and the one introduced in the Bronze Age of Comics. Likewise, he was also the one portrayed in live-action by Nicolas Cage in two Ghost Rider movies. On the other hand, Danny Ketch was the version that had perhaps the most prominent series, with his 1990s comic book adventures as Ghost Rider allowing the property to actually become one of Marvel Comics' hottest commodities.

This creates a situation in which the concept of the Spirit of Vengeance has been diluted, with the mantle changing every other year or so. Likewise, it's not even a situation where the previous Ghost Riders are killed off in order to make room for their successors. Thus, there are several of these individuals operating at the same time when they shouldn't be. Something that was once a special status - and a tragic curse, in the case of most Ghost Rider - has instead become a status that just about anyone can achieve. It's the same issue as the multiple Web-Slinging Spider-People , who devalue what Peter Parker once uniquely brought to the table and instead water down the concept.

The Marvel Universe Needs Its Original Caretaker – But What Happened to Him?

One problem that arises from these situations is that the fanbase becomes fractured. Instead of necessarily being fans of the property as a whole, readers may only gravitate toward and support one version of a character in particular. Even when that's not the case, it might cause some level of resentment when former fan-favorites are simply thrown by the wayside in order to accommodate a new or old version. That happened with the Ghost Rider legacy once Johnny Blaze became the main Spirit of Vengeance again, as he replaced his successor Danny Ketch. He did so in more ways than one, with Blaze taking on the appearance, bike and even the powers of Ketch.

Even if these new legacy characters end up becoming popular, there's no guarantee that they'll stick around. As mentioned, Danny Ketch's success in the 1990s didn't prevent him from being pushed aside once Blaze came back into fashion. Alejandra suffered this fate to an extreme degree, with Marvel Comics ultimately doing very little with her. Even Robbie Reyes has become (at most) a sort of cameo character alongside other "All-New, All-Different" heroes instead of riding his initial popularity. Thus, by introducing countless new versions of the same hero, it's more than arguable that Marvel is setting each mantle swap up for failure. Plus, fans will have little confidence that the new hero who's grown on them will actually remain a relevant character within the next two years. There's also the question of why a new mantle swap has to be introduced if it's already coming after another new version's debut. A new Spirit of Vengeance simply doesn't seem very introducing at the moment, and it's due to how many of them there already were.

The Latest Ghost Rider Series Failed to Revitalize Johnny Blaze

Ghost rider: marvel’s most powerful demon is back – and so are his deadliest followers.

The current Ghost Rider series by writer Benjamin Percy is seemingly leading into the next book featuring the hellish antihero. It features Johnny Blaze as the main Spirit of Vengeance once more, with the scope of the series having a somewhat old-school, episodic format at times. Sadly, this has been the book's downfall in many ways, especially when it comes to truly developing the character's world. Johnny Blaze's development and happy ending had to be upended for the series to even get going and make sense, with Blaze left adrift and simply going from one town to the next amid supernatural happenings. Even his being the ruler of hell was done away with, and it actually felt like a regression.

The book's scope wasn't a very proactive portrayal, either, as it made Ghost Rider seem like a victim of circumstance in his own book. Likewise, it kept the Spirit of Vengeance's larger world from being further developed as he engaged in somewhat episodic stories. There were continuing plot threads, but the build up was particularly slow. This made the book come off like it was spinning its wheels. While that may have been the case, this was no reason to go through the trouble of introducing a new version of the Spirit of Vengeance. Fans were disappointed in how Johnny Blaze was being handled and the stories he took part in, but replacing him with a new character entirely was the furthest thing from a logical solution.

Mantle Swaps In Superhero Comics Have Become Controversial

Marvel’s new punisher has the potential to be better than frank castle.

The idea of "mantle swaps" in superhero comics hasn't always gone over easily with fans, especially in recent years. Legacy has always largely been a concept more at home in the DC Universe, with many fans finding issue with how Marvel handled the concept during the "All-New, All-Different" era of the 2010s. This saw new versions of almost every major Marvel hero introduced in quick succession to each other. This development proved to be incredibly controversial, with many fans yearning for the more traditional takes on the heroes. Ironically, the Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider was easily one of the more well-received new versions of a classic character. Nevertheless, the idea of switching out familiar heroes for new versions has developed a stigma.

A recent example of somewhat contentious mantle swaps is the new Joe Garrison version of The Punisher , who's almost too much like the Frank Castle version. It's particularly present at rival publisher DC, with the legacy characters that carry the mantle of The Flash definitely competing with each other for the limelight. This only got worse with how Wally West was utilized for years after the New 52 reboot before finally being reinstated as the main Flash. No such stability seems to be headed toward Ghost Rider, however, with even Johnny Blaze unable to lay claim to the mantle for too long. That's amid his just as (if not more popular) successor Danny Ketch from largely passed by, with even more ignominious fates befalling the female Ghost Rider Alejandra Jones and Robbie Reyes.

Thus, there's definitely the chance that the new Spirit of Vengeance will be less than warmly-received by resentful fans who wish to see the character they're most familiar with. Even if the character becomes something of a hit, like with Robbie Reyes, said success will only serve to further muddle the legacy of the Ghost Rider name. Another risk is that Johnny is outright undermined to make this new character seem as if they're worthy of being the Spirit of Vengeance. If that's the route taken with this new antihero, fans will quickly turn on the decision and yearn for one of the classics to come back. Sadly, it's a tight rope that will have to be delicately walked, with the development being more than hellish for Ghost Rider fans.

Ghost Rider

Cursed by supernatural means to become the Spirit of Vengeance, those carrying the Ghost Rider mantle unleash deadly justice on the darkest parts of the Marvel Universe.

Ryan Gosling Becomes The Perfect Ghost Rider In Fiery MCU Art

Posted: December 31, 2023 | Last updated: January 1, 2024

  • Ryan Gosling's potential role in the MCU has sparked rumors and fan speculation.
  • The artist @21xfour created comic book-accurate fan art of Gosling as Ghost Rider.
  • Gosling has the versatility to play various Marvel characters, including Ghost Rider, Richard Rider/Nova, Kang the Conqueror, Mister Fantastic, or Doctor Doom. #MCU #RyanGosling #MarvelCasting

Ryan Gosling looks comic book-accurate as Ghost Rider in striking Marvel Cinematic Universe fan art. Rumors have begun swirling that Gosling is in talks with Marvel Studios to join the MCU. Gosling would be a great addition to the upcoming Marvel movies , with the versatile actor being able to play either a villain or a hero well. In the past, Gosling said he would love to play Ghost Rider , and new MCU fan art has imagined what he would look like as the character.

On Instagram, artist @21xfour shared a fiery concept art of Gosling as the MCU's Ghost Rider.

The art depicts Gosling as the Johnny Blaze version of Ghost Rider, with the actor appearing in street clothes while lighting up on fire and also fully transformed as Ghost Rider. With the MCU's supernatural corner set to be opened up in a huge way through Marvel's Blade movie, Ghost Rider could debut in the near future, though Gosling could also play other characters in the MCU's Phase 6 .

Every Marvel Cinematic Universe Movie Ranked Worst To Best

Which mcu characters ryan gosling could play, gosling would be great as multiple marvel characters.

While Gosling's favorite MCU role might be Ghost Rider, the actor possesses the acting chops to play several high-profile characters that should be coming to the MCU in the near future. Marvel Studios is developing a Nova series , and the actor has been rumored as the favorite to play Richard Rider in the MCU. However, Gosling debunked the Nova rumors at the time he expressed his desire to play Ghost Rider.

With the recent firing of Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror and the new rumor that Gosling is in talks with Marvel coinciding, the actor could possibly become the MCU's new Big Bad. If Marvel chooses to recast Kang for the rest of the Multiverse Saga, the MCU is likely going to opt for multiple actors as Kang variants rather than having the Multiverse Saga hang on a person's shoulders again. Gosling has the necessary gravitas to play Kang the Conqueror or another important variant of the character, perhaps with the MCU making the Beyonder a Kang variant, which Gosling would be pitch-perfect for.

Marvel's Fantastic Four film is a hot commodity in Hollywood these days, with the anticipated MCU movie set to go before cameras early in 2024 but having no actors attached to it so far. If Pedro Pascal's reported casting as Reed Richards does not pan out, then Gosling could bring a charismatic and nuanced performance as Mister Fantastic. Likewise, Gosling would also be a great choice for the Fantastic Four's most famous villain, Doctor Doom, with Gosling being able to finally bring Doom's complexity accurately to the big screen. It remains to be seen if the Ryan Gosling MCU rumors are true.
