Should TV Commercials for Alcohol and Fast Foods Be Banned?

Introduction

Both alcohol and fast foods are commonly recognized as unhealthy, yet still widely consumed products. Drinking too much alcohol can lead to harmful effects that affect one’s physical and mental health – both short-term and long-term. Alcohol consumption can lead to addiction, increased risk of diabetes and weight gain, impotence, cancer, brain damage, liver failure and heart issues (“What Are the Effects of Alcohol?”). Fast foods such as hamburgers and french fries are processed foods with high calories, fat, salt and low nutrient content. Eating fast foods has a negative impact on digestive and cardiovascular systems and can lead to obesity, diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, dementia and cancer (Fuhrman 375). Clearly, the effect of both alcohol and fast foods is detrimental to human health. The question is whether the negative impact of alcohol and fast foods on health could justify their ban on TV commercials. I argue here that advertising on TV has a positive effect on the sales of alcohol and fast foods, and therefore, a ban on the TV commercials for alcohol and fast foods should be introduced in order to achieve the desired outcome – lower sales of alcohol and fast foods and thus positive effect on public health.

Regulation of the marketing activities in the past

The regulation of the marketing activities for unhealthy products has already taken place. The advertising of cigarettes was banned from radio and TV commercials in the U.S. by the 1970s. Combined with other measures such as prohibiting smoking indoors in public places and adding warning signs on the packaging, the number of cigarette smokers has steadily declined from 42.6 percent in 1965 to 13.7 percent in 2018 (“Overall Tobacco Trends”). This shows that the regulation of marketing activities for unhealthy products can indeed be an effective measure for public health. The decision to ban TV commercials for alcohol and fast foods is further supported by the fact that there is no controversy about positive versus negative impact of these products on human health. Similarly, as nicotine products, alcohol and fast foods have so far only been reported to be detrimental to our health.

Discrimination of the producers and sellers 

A counterargument to the reasoning supporting the bans on TV commercials for alcohol and fast foods would be that the ban would lead to the discrimination of the producers and sellers of alcohol and fast foods. In other words, we need to solve a dilemma, whether the positive effect of the ban for public health justifies the discrimination of the alcohol and fast foods producers and sellers. As the alcohol and fast foods harm public health, their consumption causes a strain on the public health system as the consumers of these products often suffer from various medical conditions. Therefore, it appears unfair that the burden of costs for the treatment of consumers of unhealthy foods is on the whole society while the companies selling the alcohol and fast foods benefit from this situation financially. 

To summarize, the ban on TV commercials for alcohol and fast foods should be implemented as alcohol and fast foods harm public health. Previous experience with banning the advertising of tobacco products shows that this strategy can be successful. Restricting the advertising for alcohol and fast foods should take place even though it would result in a financial disadvantage for the producers and sellers of these products. The damage done by alcohol and fast foods to public health in my opinion fully justifies their ban from TV commercials.

In India the first experimental T.V. station was launched on September 15, 1959 in Delhi. The Bombay T.V. Centre started functioning on October 2, 1972. A relay transmitter at Pune was commissioned on October 2, 1973 to extend the range of the Bombay T.V. programmes.

The T.V. Centre at Srinagar started experimental telecasts on January 26, 1973. The fourth T.V. Centre in India, the Amritsar Transmitting Station was commissioned on September 29, 1973.

Towards the end of 1975, television centres were commissioned at Calcutta, Madras and Lucknow on 9th August, 15th August and 27th November respectively. Mussourie and Kanpur were added on as relay centres. It was only from 1st January 1970 that the decision to introduce commercial services was taken.

Progress during the 1970s remained very slow till a massive expansion programme was undertaken by the Government of India in the Sixth Five Year Plan. Now there are 18 programme originating Kendras of which 13 accept advertisements.

Television started accepting commercials with effect from January 1, 1976 over Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, Lucknow, Jalandhar, Srinagar, Bangalore, Trivandrum, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Nagpur and Guwahati.

With effect from 15th August 1982, commercial services have been made available to the advertisers on the National hook-up. Doordarshan telecasts simultaneously a common programme over all its 218 transmitters from 8.45 p.m. to 11.15 p.m. and on other important occasions when it is called ‘Network’.

At present TV services are available to more than 70% of the population. As a matter of Government policy, transmission of commercial advertising is restricted to 10% of the total time.

The Government has decided to use the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) band for expansion of its television services and to have all the proposed new TV transmitters on that band. About 45 UHF TV transmitters are proposed to be installed during the Seventh Plan. The first 12 of these will be commissioned between January and March next.

Existing black and white television receivers will not be able to receive UHF telecasts. Television manufacturers have been asked to produce low cost TV sets incorporating UHF tuners on a priority basis.

Thus commercial advertising on TV has been permitted since 1976. In order to attract more advertisers to promote their products through this audio-visual medium, several important changes have recently been intro­duced.

In addition to the present projecting of stills, the seven TV centres now permit movies or animated shots. Although the present spots continue, there are three classifications of TV timings.

The rates for Prime Time are the highest as it includes film spot advertisements during important programmes such as sports events, feature films, etc. This new scheme has received a stunning response in Bombay and Delhi, whilst in other centres like Calcutta and Madras the advertisers’ response is disappointing.

Colour Television was introduced in India from the end of 1982. Time can be purchased by private organisations on the Doordarshan network from December 1982 by sponsoring programmes to be telecast in colour.

These programmes may be produced by Doordarshan or outside producers and different rates are charged.

Advertising revenue of Doordarshan has shown a galloping rise during 1986-87 over the previous years. According to reply to a recent question in Lok Sabha, the total revenue received by Doordarshan from certain adver­tisers rose as follows: Colgate Palmolive from Rs.91 lakhs in 1984-85 to Rs.3.44 crores in 1986-87; Hindustan Lever from Rs.1.03 crores to Rs.4.68 crores; Brooke Bond from Rs.44 lakhs to Rs.1.41 crores; Godrej from Rs.18 lakhs to Rs.1.10 crores; Hindustan Cocoa from Rs.63 lakhs-to Rs.1.25 crores during the above period; and from Bajaj it went up from Rs.27 lakhs in 1985- 86 to Rs.1.47 crores in 1986-87.

Interpersonal relationships depend on a variety of internal and external factors, and television remains one of the most controversial issues in human life. On the one hand, according to Martin and Jacobus (2019), social interactions offered on TV are predictable and rather slick, with no solid room for experimentation and imagination. On the other hand, access to television programs has already become a meaningful international movement (Martin & Jacobus, 2019). It means that information may be displayed on TV and provoke certain emotions and behaviors. People want to and can watch as many shows and episodes as possible to cover their personal needs and emotional satisfaction. They compare experiences, analyze environments, and develop discussions to demonstrate what they learn from the offered material. For example, high social expectations and new perspectives on obligations depicted on TV affect adolescents and adults. In this essay, analyzing the course reading and an interview with a friend allows learning that despite a common context and technical advancement, television has a great impact on people.

Despite the intention to control the impact of TV on children, it is hard for parents to ensure that proper shows and episodes are chosen for watching. During this interview, my friend recognized two shows that determined her childhood and adolescence – Friends (NBC, 1994-2004) and Beverly Hills 90210 (CBS, 1990-2000). At that moment, watching the chosen series was related to multiple positive emotions because the authors depicted the nature of teenage and adult relationships and the quality of life that American citizens could have (Martin & Jacobus, 2019). For example, in Beverly Hills , school and college education were described, with a special evaluation of current problems of drug abuse, sexual violence, bullying, and friendship. In Friends , attention was paid to the essence of friendship and situations when certain decisions should be made and preferences should be established. It was learned that even the most intelligent and careful people could make mistakes and needed to analyze their behaviors in particular contexts. Each show seriously impacted the interviewee’s behavior and acceptance of reality. Those stories prepared adolescents for their grown-up lives where racial, gender, and age inequality existed and put various restrictions on an individual’s activities.

The ways of making TV shows have changed with time, including various technological and social aspects, but their impact on people stays the same. Today, there is no need to wait for a particular time but use the Internet and watch favorite shows anytime. The interviewee shared her interest in such series as Grey’s Anatomy (ABC, 2005 – ) and Gossip Girl (CW, 2007-2012). Almost every episode brought some new experiences and emotions to her life because the characters lived their lives, solved problems, and achieved their goals. Martin and Jacobus (2019) notice that many modern episodes are self-contained, and it does not take much preparation or explanation in advance. Therefore, the number of viewers changes regularly, and some people demonstrate their interest or choose other shows. My friend admires Grey’s Anatomy due to its surgical themes and how health care has been recently improved. Gossip Girl is a show about modern teenagers, their problems, and their dreams. It reveals what young people want, what steps they are ready to take, and how family business affects children’s future. Instead of inspiration or motivation, these series provoke critical thinking and evaluation.

Addressing the chosen TV shows and learning the material from the textbook, it has become evident that television’s impact cannot be ignored. Despite the year of production and distribution, the main goal of any product is to entertain people and gain commercial benefits (Martin & Jacobus, 2019). However, modern researchers and sociologists admit that new programs are characterized by biased or sensationalist judgments that discourage social engagement and misinform people (Rothwell, 2019). Therefore, it is important to be cautious and accept the offered material for advertising purposes. Marked influence continues to grow and promote the American style of life in many countries abroad. Video art has become a serious competitor to commercial television, offering experimental and radical ideas to please the audience (Martin & Jacobus, 2019). This sphere of art has not been properly examined yet, but its abilities are unpredictable and captivating. Although some people are confident in the television industry, it is wrong to neglect the possibility of improvement but gain a better meaning. Compared to the adolescent period, when viewers admire opportunities and discover new sources of inspiration, adulthood makes them more attentive to the significant details.

Communication with my friend and the evaluation of old and new TV shows and video art ideas turn out to be a valuable experience in understanding how people should treat television. Different in quality and distribution periods, most series are similar in their context and purposes. They aim to describe human lives, address social, economic, and political problems, and show how certain decisions lead to certain outcomes. However, even if the episodes vary, their impact on people is definite – watching, learning, and following the examples. Images and sounds have been improved regardless of the viewer’s readiness or knowledge levels. Still, how individuals accept these stories has nothing to do with technology but personal judgments and attitudes toward society.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s decision to suspend his presidential campaign and endorse former President Donald J. Trump was — depending on where on the political spectrum the coverage came from — treated with either outright glee — or derision. Conservative sites primarily focused on the potential electoral boon to Mr. Trump, while liberal media outlets focused more on Mr. Kennedy’s dysfunctional campaign, including by returning to several negative story lines.

Mr. Kennedy announced on Friday that he would suspend his presidential campaign in key battleground states, though he intended to remain on the ballot in some states. He suggested he worried his presence in the race would pull voters away from other candidates, though recent polling wasn’t clear about who might benefit from Mr. Kennedy’s change in plans.

Conservative sites, more than a dozen of which prominently featured the news on their home pages, saw the news as a win for Mr. Trump. They argued that Mr. Kennedy’s decision could reshape the race by turning Mr. Kennedy’s supporters into Mr. Trump’s, and by shifting the attention of Americans away from this week’s Democratic National Convention.

Liberal media outlets described Mr. Kennedy’s decision as self-serving, and in keeping with his unpredictable campaign. Several referenced Mr. Kennedy’s assertion that Mr. Trump had offered him a role in a second Trump administration, something the former president declined to confirm on Friday. The sites referred to him using words like “power-hungry” and “transactional.”
