The Commonwealth Scholarships at King’s College London are for candidates from high income countries for full-time doctoral study at a UK university. Funded by the UK Department for Education (DfE) and the host university, Commonwealth PhD Scholarships for high-income countries support research that will have an impact in a field relating to sustainable development.

The Commonwealth Scholarships are intended to enhance individual teaching and research capacity, leading to increased institutional capacity in academic and other sectors in Commonwealth countries, and will contribute to UK higher education and research by attracting high-calibre international candidates and encouraging links and collaboration.

The scholarships are considered to support scholars who cannot afford to study in the UK without additional financial support. Applicants from traditionally marginalised or under-represented groups and those who have overcome significant disadvantages or other barriers in their educational journey so far will be given priority when making selections.

Eligibility:

Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country.
Show evidence that they are currently permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country. Candidates must have been living in an eligible Commonwealth country for a period of two years prior to the date they submit their application, which must be clear within the application.
Not be registered for or have started a PhD, or an MPhil leading to a PhD at a UK University prior to the start of the Scholarship and be available to start the Scholarship and academic studies in the UK in September/October 2024 (exact date to be agreed by the CSC). The Scholarship will not be offered to anyone who has already started their PhD in the UK prior to September 2024.
Hold a first degree of at least upper second-class (2:1) honours standard, or a lower second-class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree) by the time they apply for the Scholarship, with evidence of the degree to be submitted within the application.
Not have commenced or be currently registered for a PhD, or an MPhil leading to a PhD, in their home country or elsewhere.
Hold an unconditional offer or a conditional offer conditional only on finance for the 2023 UK academic year from all of the UK universities listed on their application, to be submitted as part of the application.
Provide references from at least 2 individuals, in PDF format, signed and on institution letterhead or an email clearly showing the sender’s details.
Provide a supporting statement from a proposed supervisor from at least one of the UK universities listed in the application, in PDF format, signed and on institution letterhead or an email clearly showing the sender’s details.

Apply for admittance for their chosen PhD at King’s College London via King’s Apply online application system.
Apply to the CSC using the CSC’s online application system .

The CSC is unable to accept any applications or documentation not submitted via the online application system.

Applicants are advised to complete and submit applications as early as possible, as the online application system will be very busy in the days leading up to the application deadline.

Applicants can expect to hear the outcome by July 2024. King's Scholarships

Upon acceptance to King's College, merit evaluation automatically occurs, and a separate application is not required. As an SAT/ACT optional school, you do not need to submit your scores. However, in doing so, your eligibility for scholarships and awards will be reviewed on an individual basis. Scholarship and award notification is announced in each acceptance letter. The following merit scholarship and award information is updated for the Fall 2023 entry term.

PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP (FULL TUITION)

The full-tuition Presidential Scholarship is awarded to only the top 5% of applicants to King's College. Consideration for this prestigious award is based on the following selection criteria reviewed by the Scholarship Committee:

Meets academic criteria: The student demonstrates exemplary leadership, scholastic achievement, extracurricular activities, and/or community service.
Meets King's College application requirements by January 1: The application is submitted by the deadline and includes official high school transcripts, and, if not applying "test optional," SAT (minimum 1310) or ACT (minimum 28) scores.
Meets minimum of recalculated 3.8 GPA: King's College recalculates high school GPA to include classes only in mathematics, science, English, history, and foreign language.

If identified, students will be invited to attend an interview for scholarship consideration. The Presidential Scholarship is non-transferable and covers any increase in tuition for four years (eight semesters) of undergraduate academic study at King's College*.

*Alternatively, the scholarship covers three years (six semester) for students participating in any partnership or dual enrollment programs (e.g., 3+2 or 3+3).

MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS (UP TO $26,000)

First-time, full-time undergraduate scholarships.

King's College offers merit scholarships based on a student's academic success in high school. The following scholarships are awarded at the time of acceptance and are renewable for up to eight fall/spring undergraduate semesters as long as students maintain the required GPA. Merit-based scholarships are financial awards that do not need to be paid back..

ARMY AND AIR FORCE (UP TO FULL TUITION)

Army rotc scholarships.

Four-year Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) scholarships or three-year advanced designee scholarships provide free room and board upon enrollment. Scholarship benefits award up to full tuition, $900 for books, and a monthly stipend ranging from $300 per month for freshmen to $500 per month for seniors. Exploring the relationship between gut microbes, phages, metabolites and cardiometabolic health using computational methods

Metabolomics and the gut microbiome are intricately involved in the risk of metabolic diseases. Moreover, there is increasing evidence that metabolites produced by the gut microbiota, such as short-chain fatty acids, bile acids and branch-chain amino acids, are responsible for several metabolic conditions including insulin resistance, diabetes and obesity, thus mediating microbial effects on human health. Likewise, the gut bacterial communities and their activities can be altered by viruses, including phages, making these biological entities important regulators of the host’s health. For instance, gut virome alterations have been associated with a wide range of diseases. However, the impact of the gut virome on the metabolome and health is still scarce. The objective of this PhD studentship is to identify the contribution of the gut microbiome, virome, and metabolome to cardio-metabolic disease and to investigate their interactions. This will provide a better understand the underlying mechanisms of phage-host interactions and their impact on the human host.

The PhD student will analyse available data from TwinsUK, a register of UK twins, and from the post-prandial nutritional intervention study ZOE PREDICT-1. These two studies provide a wealth of existing data, including blood and faecal metabolomics, the gut microbiome (shotgun metagenome), detailed cardiometabolic phenotyping at multiple time points, dietary information and post-prandial responses. The virome analysis will be supervised in collaboration with Prof. Li Deng at the Technical University of Munich and Helmholtz Centre Munich in Germany.

Seeking highly motivated early career researchers with a strong statistical/mathematical/bio-informatics background for a PhD studentship in human metabolomics/microbiome at the Department of Twin Research & Genetic Epidemiology, King’s College London. The Department has close links with Divisional and other Research Departments within King’s College, as well as many external Research Organisations. Our group includes over 60 researchers and produces over 70 papers per year in high impact factor journals including Nature, Cell and Nature Genetics and are ranked in the world top 1% of cited scientists. The PhD student will also work in close collaboration with the Deng lab in Munich, that has developed an integrative approach combining single-cell technologies, culture-independent techniques, multi-omics, machine learning, as well as their developed pipeline called ViroProfiler (https://github.com/deng-lab/viroprofiler) to analyse viral metagenomic data.

About the Project

The PhD project will focus on the development of innovative electrode materials for non-aqueous aluminium-ion batteries.

Background: Due to concerns over the environmental impact of lithium-ion batteries and the use of critical materials, alternative battery systems including non-aqueous aluminium-ion batteries (AIBs) have gained increased attention. AIBs are advantageous in that they contain highly abundant aluminium replacing critical lithium, have low cost, and a high theoretical energy. However, AIBs are still in their infancy and further research is needed to understand their detailed working principles and how to control the underlying reactions.

Project details: This project therefore aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the electrochemistry in AIBs and how to tune their performance. To this end, a systematic study of the impact of the chemical composition and materials engineering on the reaction mechanisms will be conducted. The obtained findings will be then rationalised into a design strategy for sustainable high-performance cathode materials for AIBs. Ultimately, the results of this project shall lead to the development of optimised AIB systems and will have a significant impact on the current battery landscape.

The student will use solid-state and solvothermal synthesis methods for the preparation of the electrode materials. In depth analysis of the materials is done via complementary characterisation techniques such as electrochemical cycling, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and more. Further, a computational component can be added. In addition, also the environmental and economic implications of AIBs will be explored using life cycle assessment and techno-economic modelling.

Requirements: We are especially interested in students with a strong understanding of materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or relevant topics. Lab experience (chemical synthesis) is required. Additional knowledge in electrochemistry, energy storage systems and/or sustainability-related modelling is welcome but not a requirement.

This interdisciplinary project is positioned at the interface between materials science, engineering and sustainability and provides ample opportunities for internal and external collaborations.

3.5yrs of funding to support a UK Home student for a project in the Department of Engineering.

Background:

The ability of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) materials to carry large current densities with little or no resistance makes them attractive for providing large rotor magnetic fields in high-power density superconducting electrical machines. Superconducting electrical machines are more efficient, smaller and lighter than conventional ones, and there is great interest in exploiting these properties for next-generation electric aircraft and other electric transport applications to meet ambitious net zero emissions targets.

HTS flux pumps – which exploit the nonlinear resistivity of an HTS wire when subjected to a varying magnetic field – offer the possibility of a brushless exciter for a wire-wound superconducting machine to inject a large DC current into its rotor coils without the need for slip rings/brushes and thermally-inefficient current leads. This would significantly improve the efficiency and reliability of such machines.

Project details:

This project aims to develop state-of-the-art numerical models of the HTS dynamo-type flux pump, in order to design and optimise the device for use as a brushless exciter for superconducting electrical machines in electric aircraft. Thus, in addition, a thorough analysis of electric aircraft requirements will be required to set design specifications.

To validate the numerical models, the project will also involve proof-of-concept experiments, which will ultimately enable us to explore the scaling up of the device for real-world application.

The Ph.D. will involve part of, but not restricted to, the following topics:

1 – Exploring the mysteries of bio-inspired flight/swimming. More specifically, the candidate will use theoretical and computational techniques to model natural flight and swimming flow problems, understand the mechanism behind them and provide advanced control and optimization strategy for the bio-mimic systems. The candidate could get involved in the fundamental analytical analysis on vortex shedding and the role of vortices in incompressible flows, the CFD simulations on 2D and 3D bio-inspired flight/swimming cases, the fluid-structure-interaction analysis, the data-driven surrogated model through artificial intelligence (GNNs, RNNs, LSTM, etc.), or the advanced control strategy and optimization.

2 – Modelling, control, and optimization of the flow in renewable energy systems, specifically wind turbines/farms or proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. In more specific terms, the candidate will simulate the fluid or fluid-structure interaction problem in wind turbines/farms or the multi-disciplinary multi-scale problem in PEM fuel cells numerically. The candidate will also deliver the flexible modelling framework for PEMFCs and provide solutions for the next generation PEMFCs by comprehensive optimization in the aspects of flow channel design, cooling strategy, input gas ratio, etc., to achieve high efficiency, reliability, and long durability.

The candidate will work with Dr. Juan Li (first supervisor) and Dr. David Moxey (second supervisor) based at Strand Campus, King’s College London. Dr. Li is experienced in the field of unsteady aerodynamics and renewable energy. Title: PhD Studentship: Development of numerical models and analysis tools for consumer energy decarbonisation within regional/global perspectives (King’s College London Scholarships)

To limit global warming to the target of 1.5°C, COP26 ended with a global agreement to accelerate action against climate change this decade alongside many countries aiming for longer-term goals of net zero emissions by 2050. The building sector emissions are historically one of the largest sectors when including direct and indirect emissions from heating, electricity and cooking it accounts for 28% of global emissions, followed closely by the transport sector with 27%. Approximately 60% of emissions from both of these sectors is from consumer energy demands, making personal energy use from residential buildings and cars around 33% of global emissions.

To address personal energy (e.g., heating/cooling, transport, and electricity) decarbonisation, previous studies usually focus on the interaction between these demands, with work completed primarily at national level. However, as energy demands, investment for personal energy decarbonisation is usually paid by customers. It is critical to allow an understanding of if low-carbon technologies will be viable for consumers, and therefore if they will be taken up at mass, which may lead to different results to that which is optimum by regional level long term analysis.

This project is to lead the development of numerical models and analysis tools for consumer energy decarbonisation within regional/global perspectives. Objectives are to 1) analyse domestic energy decarbonisation (electricity, heating and transport) options from the customer’s perspective (one region or across regions in the world), 2) assess if decaronisation will worsen equality of access to energy services (e.g., electricity, water, etc), and /or 3) assess if bottom-up customers’ least cost options are compatible with top-down system optimums. To consolidate the relationship between King’s College London and the Turkish Embassy Education Consultancy in London, an agreement was signed in 2018 to support postgraduate study for Turkish students at King’s College London. Applicants must be due to commence a full-time joint PhD program run in collaboration between King’s College London and a stated partner (The University of Hong Kong, Humboldt University, Berlin, The National University of Singapore, or The University of Sao Paulo) during the 2023/24 academic year. Admission Requirements : Applicants must meet the following criteria:
Applications for joint PhD programs must be approved by King’s College London and the partner university before a formal admissions offer can be made. As such, the process may take longer than for a single PhD program.
Students must spend a set minimum amount of time at the partner university (12 months for the Humboldt, NUS, and USP partnerships and 50% of the overall time for the HKU partnership).
Language Requirement : To study at King’s, it is required to provide certification of competence in English before starting studies. Check full English language entry requirements .

The award is offered for four years and depends on the successful progression of the candidate. The scholarship will cover the following:

University College London (UCL) is offering the IOE Centenary Scholarships for the year 2024 in the UK, open to international students. These scholarships cover full tuition fees for Masters programs at UCL, along with a monthly stipend of £1,730 to assist with living expenses in London. Additionally, a one-time contribution towards return flights to London is included. Applicants must meet certain eligibility criteria, including citizenship from low- or lower-middle-income countries as classified by the World Bank, holding an unconditional offer for a full-time Master's degree program at IOE, and not having previous experience studying or living in the UK. About our postgraduate research studies.

The Institute of Pharmaceutical Science (IPS) is an enabling and rich environment for students to undertake their postgraduate research studies. Across the three research groups of Drug Discovery, Medicines Development, and Medicines Use; we have approximately 100 students on 3, 3+1, and 4-year track PhD programmes.

Most of our PhD students are embedded on one site, engendering an environment of engagement (student led seminars, social activities, annual symposium day), interdisciplinary curiosity, and experience of cutting edge and diverse methodology platforms. This results in a unique, strong and exciting research journey.

The research experience of our PhD students can be further strengthened from competitive internal funds to allow you to travel to learn techniques in collaborator labs, or funds for conference participation from the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine and the Centre for Doctoral Studies.

Our PGR student body is international and this is reflected in the diversity of routes by which our students are funded. King's has annual application rounds of certain initiatives such as Medical Research Council- Doctoral Training Programme (MRC-DTP), London Interdisciplinary Doctoral Partnership funded by BBSRC (LIDo-DTP), and the King’s-China Scholarship Council (K-CSC).

Other PGR students may be funded by Industry, foreign government organisations, or self-funded. Some programmes have specific application procedures that must be adhered to and can be found below with particular timelines during the year.

If you need help discussing a research project you have seen advertised, or you need help in devising a research project but are unsure who might be the best person to supervise it, it is best to identify our research staff in Drug Discovery, Medicines Development, and Medicines Use.
