  • Trivia Despite its all-star cast and Academy Award-nominated writer and director, this went direct-to-video.
  • Goofs Seconds after Neal wakes up in the hospital after being knocked cold, clearly disoriented and unsure where he is, his sister comes in. He tells her the doctors want to "keep me overnight, to log some tests in the morning." How does he know this?

Bob Cody : Ever hear of Frederick Turner, Mr. Oliver?

Neal Oliver : No, sir.

Bob Cody : Well, he was an historian. About a hundred years ago he came up with a theory about the frontier. He said the frontier was a safety valve for civilization, a place for people to go to keep from goin' mad. So, whenever there were folks who couldn't fit in with the way things were, nuts, and malcontents, and extremists, they'd pack up and head for the frontier. That's how America got started - all the crackpots and troublemakers in Europe packed up and went to a frontier which became the thirteen colonies. When some people couldn't fit in with that, they moved farther west, which is why all the nuts eventually ended up in California. Turner died in 1932, so he wasn't around long enough to see what would happen to the world when we ran out of frontier. Some people say we have the frontier of the mind, and they go off and explore the wonderful world of alcohol and drugs, but that's no frontier. It's just another way for us to fool ourselves. And we've created this phony frontier with computers, which allows people to, you know, think they've escaped. A frontier with access fees?

Neal Oliver : What about space? You know, the final frontier!

Bob Cody : Ah, Star Trek isn't space. That's television - fine fuckin' frontier that is. Besides, how many folks can just pack up and go to space?

  • Crazy credits The end credits testify "No computer or miniatures were used to create or enhance the destruction of any vehicles in this movie".

These days, movies are spectacles - made to leave your jaw on the floor with their twists, visuals and... other big stuff.

This is not a spectacle movie. But it is fun. Very fun. And that is what movies, at their heart, should be. You wont get tired from over thinking the plot, you wont give birth to baby smiles due to laughter, but what you are left with is a sense of adventure and excitement. It has the perfect mix of everything.

This is a great, fun movie and everyone can enjoy it.

The movie is rebel, even for out time, reaching out beyond the boundaries of Hollywood cannon. Cast performances, music and story are mostly respectable, but the script is brilliant, on the same level as Groundhog Day or Waking Life. Must see.

"Where do you find a highway that doesn't exist?"

Neal is an aspiring artist from a wealthy family that wants to see him become a lawyer against his wishes. At his birthday party he unknowingly meets a mystical wish granting being of sorts who takes an interest in him. After taking a blow to the head he begins to see things that others cannot and it leads him down a road to delivering a mysterious package west across the country via the non-existent Interstate 60.

Once in awhile I stumble upon a clip of a scene and it causes me to add a film to my watchlist. In this case it was a long time ago but I vaguely remember…

Ah, experience has conditioned you into thinking that all hearts are red and all spades are black because their shapes are similar. It's easier for your mind to interpret them based on that past experience instead of being open to the idea they could be different. We see what we expect to see, not necessarily what's really there. Children who have never played cards always pass this test. Makes you wonder how many other things are right in front of you - sights, sounds, smells that you can't experience because you've been conditioned not to. The good news is, if we do the test again, you'll pass. Once you're aware that there can be black hearts and red spades you'll…

Interstate 60 is an enjoyable road trip movie with strange and unique comedy elements. The 'fantasy' story is entertaining and refreshingly original, and the atmosphere is charming for its time. One scene is probably my favorite scene in the movie, where all citizens are literally the only lawyers in town.

The cast is spot-on; James Marsden, Gary Oldman, Kurt Russell, Amy Smart, and the lead actors from Back to the Future .

Overall, it's a smartly written movie that deserves more viewings, and I'd also like to add that James Marsden looks so pretty in the film.

Bob Cody : Say what you mean, mean what you say. You know that if everybody followed that rule, there'd be a lot less trouble.

Interstate 60 (or Interstate 60: Episodes of the Road ) made me think a lot about The Man From Earth (which I liked better): a small budget film with a simple concept, yet full of ideas and topics to debate about.

There's a lot to tell about the casting: first of, I never thought that James Marsden could be such a charismatic actor, I wouldn't say he's great but his aura definitely fits well this fairy tale. It's quite disappointing that Amy Smart didn't have much to do, because she was great! It's also nice to see…

It’s a nice sweet film. Nothing spectacular about it but it works well.

A little bit of magic, wishes and mystery along the road that doesn’t actually exist.

I enjoyed it, one of those that will make you smile and laugh in certain places but it is basic, in both it’s concept and delivery. I wouldn’t put anyone off watching it but if it’s thrills and spills you like then probably not for you.

Be careful what you wish for to a T lol.

I love how brutal it was in that aspect of it too. O.W. Grant is a savage. The journey itself was pretty entertaining throughout, as it throws tons of wacky characters at us and lots of random shit happens in the meantime. This has a stacked cast and is unique enough to work quite well. 7.4/10🛣️

The R-rated Disney channel film where Dracula is disguised as Commissioner Gordon with a Pee Wee twist and has Wishmaster gifts with treacherous shenanigans, taking out capitalist Marty McFly, while pre-blindness Cyclops traverses a Gilliam-esque alternate-universe highway after signing a transporter contract with Dr. Emmett Brown and stumbling upon surreal, multi-genre encounters of the 69th kind, including suburban post-gay Colonel Fitts employing pre-Cyclops as proto Uber, and Snake Plissken giving lessons on family mortality and drug enslavement after escaping from dystopian New York and L.A. There is also an action sequence and like a cool explosion and stuff.

this movie is nuts! I love that it takes an hour and 45 minutes of people eating an entire diner’s worth of food and saying things like “I don’t need school, mom! I have euphoria!” to let you know the actual moral which is if you go to law school you will kill your dad.

“Interstate 60” reaches for a fresh spin on magic realism and comes up with very little. First pic written and directed by “Back to the Future” producer Bob Gale tries to replay “Future’s” gee-whiz elements, featuring stars Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd in supporting roles, but almost nothing about this odyssey’s themes of self-realization and wish-making feels genuine. While its hero desires to be a painter, there’s no evidence he has talent, and the film’s fable-like morals are delivered with juvenile obviousness. Pic won’t have B.O. wishes fulfilled during upcoming domestic release, but roster of stellar names will draw curious ancillary customers.

Neal resists his father’s plan of following Dad into the law, but his own artistic dreams are delayed by the work of a goofy gent named O.W. Grant (Gary Oldman), who has the power to grant wishes and the ability to puff green smoke out of an intimidating pipe. Lloyd’s Ray, with Grant, sends Neal on a ridiculous cross-country journey where he learns lessons in neo-conservative morals and meets one-note characters played by Chris Cooper, Kurt Russell and Ann-Margret, among others.

We Need to Talk About Books

We Need to Talk About Books

Film review: interstate 60 – the best movie you’ve never heard of.

Many films don’t get the recognition they deserve, get overlooked or forgotten. Few offer the charm or delight to reward tracking them down.

Some years ago I made an appointment with my doctor, announced myself to reception on arrival, was told to take a seat and immediately experienced that annoying emotion I feel all too often of wishing I had remembered to bring a book to read while I waited. The waiting room was typically filled with women’s and celebrity magazines but amongst this I did find an Empire to flick through.

It was one of those end-of-year editions were they asked their various critics to name their best and worst films of the year, plus some fun categories; best onscreen duos, best fight scenes, etc. A sort of boring mix of Academy nods, MTV high-fives and Raspberry buckets over the head. In amongst this was one category that did pique my interest; Empire asked their critics to name the best movie no-ones heard of, and their pick was Interstate 60 .

Interstate 60 is the story of Neal Oliver (James Marsden), a young man at the crossroads of his life. He works the night shift at a warehouse to pay bills while he tries to make it as an artist. But as rejection letters mount, his father gets him an acceptance to an academy that will set him on a path towards becoming a lawyer, just like his father.

Neal is the sort of guy who indulges in a bit of superstition. He refuses to believe in coincidences, looks for the meaning behind things, believes in signs and prefers to roll the dice and see what fate has in store for him. Now he finds himself torn between making the safe choice, as his father and girlfriend expect, or pursuing that which makes him happy.

After a head injury starts messing with his perception he is given a mysterious assignment. He is to head west along Interstate 60, which does not exist, to deliver a package. It’s a chance to get away, enjoy the open road and think about his future for a few days before he has to make his big decision.

On the road he meets O. W. Grant (Gary Oldman), an immortal being who has the power to grant wishes but mostly likes messing with people. Neal asks for the one thing he wants most – the answers to his life. What he gets is a magic-8-ball that will always give him the right answer.

As Neal travels down the mythical Interstate 60, he meets others who have had the fortune, or misfortune, of meeting Grant. “Some people just don’t know what to wish for” as Grant says. He meets people whose lives have been lead astray by money, sex, drugs and other pleasurable pursuits. Or people fooled simply by their perceptions or long-held convictions. As his journey moves along, Neal feels more certain about what he needs to do about his life.

Interstate 60 is written and directed by Bob Gale, best known for co-writing Back to the Future , and it shares that film’s charm and life-affirming themes. It is a frame-story, filled with eccentric characters, of a journey through a magical, metaphorical land. It sports cameo appearances by Michael J Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Kurt Russell, Chris Cooper, Ann-Margret and Amy Smart. Lloyd and Oldman in particular look like they had great fun with this film and their roles.

Does Interstate 60 truly deserve the title of ‘best movie you’ve never heard of’?

Maybe not. That was a few years ago. It is not that hard to find anymore, I would not say it is easy, but I see it around often enough. Mention such an accolade to your average film-snob and they will no doubt provide a number of films that may better fill that space. And you know exactly what sort of films they would be.

Foreign? Check. Subtitled? Check. Brilliantly written, acted and directed? Check. Plot structures and character development that go against all the clichés of Western storytelling? Check. A story and themes that highlight some forgotten aspect of the human condition; that destroy your preconceptions of morality, faith and love; that will have you leaving the theatre wondering who you are, what you believe in and where you parked your car? Check.

You know those sorts of films, you know what to expect from them, you know who to ask if you want to find them. I’m not dismissing them, frankly I’d like to hear about more of them, but you need not worry that  Interstate 60 is one of those.

It is a movie to be enjoyed on a Friday night in with some pizza and beer. It is a film about road-trip odysseys, frontier adventures and the eccentric strangers and monsters you meet on the magical island stops; about not being fooled by your perceptions or that life follows a planned course but embracing its unexpected turns; about betting on your own dreams and taking the roads less travelled by. It is feel-good without being preachy, cheesy, self-helpy or religious. It is funny, it is clever and it will surprise you by being surprising. It will leave you feeling either pretty good about your life or pretty sure about how you are going to change it. Enjoy.

INTERSTATE 60

By Randy Atamaniuk | August 27, 2002

Neal Oliver (James Marsden) has been offered the chance of a lifetime; to find his meaning of life, and to get the girl of his dreams. While having problems at home with his father, who wants him to pursue a career in law, Neal has chosen the artistic route; a career path his father does not approve of. By luck, pure coincidence or maybe even destiny, Neal meets up with Ray (Christopher Lloyd) who hires him to deliver a package to the city of Danver. The package itself, its contents unknown. Neal accepts Ray’s gracious offer, and embarks on his journey, onto the uncharted Interstate 60… a highway that doesn t exist on any map. Guided by billboards, with the girl of his dreams on every one of them, Neal comes upon his first hitch-hiking friend, O.W. Grant (Gary Oldman). After a brief conversation, Neal discovers that his journey may be the cause of Grant; from which he as granted a wish, that he may or may not have asked for. Cruising down the road as he passes Americana, he meets up with some of the most interesting characters. One of which, is Bob Cody (Chris Cooper). Bob is one of the greatest characters I ve ever seen; tough, honest, hates liars, and has an “explosive” temper if you get on his bad side. Amy Jo Johnson, the girl who is looking for the sexual experience of a lifetime. And then there was the town where all of its citizens are utilized to do work, in return for a highly addictive new drug. All enforced within the law, by the Libertarian Sheriff (Kurt Russell). Neal eventually gets into a little trouble, as he ends up in a town run by Lawyers. Incarcerated, it looks as if he’s reached the end of his adventures on I-60. Then, he meets her. The Girl (Amy Smart) of his dreams, who is also trapped in litigation hell. Neal gets help from his old pal, Bob Cody to get him and The Girl out, and they re off. Or are they? Neal seems to get himself into another predicament, as he is now being pursued by the police. After escaping from what seemed to be his ill-fated doom, Neal has finally awaken, realizing that he must choose his own path in life, and not to try and please everyone else, like his father. “I-60” has good intentions, and definitely has a message to it, or at least I saw it that way. But it’s also a lot of fun. Director Bob Gale, for what I see anyways, has not followed the conventional rules of movie-making, and instead given us a really different and yet refreshing story, with enchanting characters. What I really liked most about “I-60”, was that it felt like a movie that hasn t been made in over a decade; a picture with a 1980 s fantasy-feel to it; the way Hollywood used to make movies during that era, but keeping it fresh for todays modern audience. What I disliked about the film, was not the film itself, but was that I saw it at the San Diego Comic Con, on a small non-theatrical screen, a lousy sound system, and people talking throughout the movie. The film hits theaters in November, as I plan to see it again, in the proper environment. The best way I can sum up “I-60”, is if the Spielberg-produced television series “Amazing Stories” had branched off into a movie franchise, as the latter Zemeckis produced “Tales From the Crypt” series did, “I-60” would have to be the perfect candidate.

Film review: interstate 60 (2002).

Adrian Halen 07/10/2012 Cult Films

movie review interstate 60

A confused young man (Marsden) takes a journey on a road that doesn’t exist on any map.

“ Interstate 60 Episodes of the Road ” was one film that caught me by surprise. I’ve always associated it with the stylings of a cult film although I’m not so sure it ever caught on to signal “that” classification. For starters we’ll just stick with the shorter name of “Interstate 60” (no one likes a run on title, yunno?)

The film certainly has its mix of characters and well known actors taking part. And yet, it was always one of those films you might pass over on a rental shelf. Well that’s what reviews are for……to alert others of great films and not so great films. This one, in my opinion was some of the quirky special ones. Call it a comedy, adventure, drama…but whatever it is, it’s got a touch of that magic introducing viewers to roads not yet taken.

movie review interstate 60

The film encounters young artist Neal Oliver (James Marsden). He comes from a wealthy background but really wants to chart his own course in life. Even with the promise of a “sure-fire” interview for a well known law firm, he feels that life has something in store for him. His painting is a passion that is often centered on an imaginary girl he never met (Amy Smart). And then of course there is that magic element to the whole deal.. We learn from early discussions that there is a special person in the world named O.W.Grant, who grants his passersbys 1 wish. Played by actor Gary Oldman , Grant is sort of leprechaun figure that has been around for quite some time. He wears a bow tie and smokes a monkey pipe (but he’s as seemingly ordinary and you and me).

Grant does exactly that. He grants wishes, but his nature is that of a trickster which sometimes bends the rules of “careful what you wish for”. Horror fans would see this same profile taken with the Djinn from the “Wishmaster” franchise series. When Neal asks for a single wish in his presence, the wish of “wanting an answer to life” inquires Grant enough to come along for the ride. And speaking of ride, Neal is summoned to a freelance job per a strange man by the name of Ray (Christopher Lloyd).

His task? to deliver a single package taking Interstate 60. This interstate doesn’t officially exist, and so Neal sets out to see if it does. As he take the journey, he discovers the hidden road behind all roads that is pathed with a colorful array of characters. Many of which have also seen their wishes transpire in odd ways.

“Interstate 60” takes a colorful tone rich with a series of odd cities and encounters. Neal first comes across a town which purposely indulges it visitors into taking a legal drug they call “euphoria”. The town posts multiple signs about its addictive qualities in full support form its local law enforcement officials. As its simply explained….they get free labor in exchange for supplying more of the drug to its residents. The residents stay happy, high and out of trouble which is a win win for all (nice concept eh???)

The fun doesn’t stop there as Neal ventures further down to a town that is populated by over-anxious lawyers. In fact the entire town exists purely by suing each other for anything and everything. It’s quirky dark humor that I found to be quite amusing.

As Neal seeks his dream girl he also does so at the threat that a serial killer may appear at some point. With only a fortune-telling 8-ball at his side, it becomes clear that Neal will have to make some hard choices.

movie review interstate 60

“ Interstate 60 ” in summary, is alot of fun and seals the experience with a whole wrap around ending that brings life into perspective for Neal. It certainly is an offbeat story fashioning plenty of cameo appearances by great actors (call it a Wizard of Oz-style base?) The film follows in the same sort of “road to mystery” that the movie “ Highway to Hell ” did (leaving off the Hell portion) and while maybe not a sure-fire winner to every viewer…. is written quite cleverly. In analysis, I found Neal to be the subject of constantly having to make the right choice. He’s offered jobs, drugs, money, sex, residence and temptation at every point. Neal is being tested thru the whole film which leads him to the ultimate conclusion.

“Interstate 60” is about finding your soul mate, about dealing with the paths not taken and about the fantastical possibilities beyond our world that might just exist for those who are astute to it.

Has anybody seen Interstate 60?

The lack of awareness for Insterstate 60 always amazes me - mainly because it features an all-star cast and was written and directed by Bob Gale (Back to the Future). It stars James Marsden as an aspiring artist who accepts a mission to deliver a package down a mystical highway, which leads to him meeting some strange and interesting people. It's quite episodic and the little side stories are great. I won't get into spoilers in case you haven't seen it, but some of the character's obstacles include trying to get out of a town that's run entirely by self-serving lawyers and bumping into a guy who goes to extreme lengths when people aren't honest with him.

The supporting cast also includes Kurt Russell, Gary Oldman, Christopher Lloyd, Chris Cooper, and more. I have no doubt that Gale called in a few favours to land them, but most of them have a strong and memorable supporting role in the movie. Those names should have been enough to give the movie some kind of reasonable exposure, though. I don't think it received a proper theatre release back in the day, and it didn't catch on when it went to home video. That said, I'm shocked that it isn't more popular than it is.

It's definitely quite cookie-cutter with its philosophical ideas, and some parts are quite juvenile (I don't mean that as a criticism). At its core, it's a movie about self-discovery and making the right choices, and while it doesn't explore these ideas with much depth, its heart is in the right place and it's feel-good nonetheless. It embraces the hallmarks of road movies, but the lead character reminds me of the protagonist in The Phantom Tollbooth. Every situation he encounters brings some new meaning, and it's fun seeing how it all comes together.

Everyone I've recommended it to also enjoyed it, and I've found that other people who've seen it are big fans. I'm wondering what the consensus is here? I think it'd be a great movie to reboot as a limited series or anthology show. I'd love to see more stories set in this universe that explore more locations and follow new characters.

Interstate 60 review BMW convertible James Marsden 8 ball

Neal (James Marsden) consults relies on his 8-Ball to make decisions for him. Photo: Screen Media Films

Think America doesn’t have a mythological figure in its folklore who grants wishes? Then you haven’t met O.W. Grant, the immortal offspring of a leprechaun and Cheyenne Indian. If you’re lucky enough to cross paths with him, your wildest dreams may come true… but be nothing like what you expected.

That’s the premise to this whimsical, metaphysical comedy written and directed by Bob Gale, co-creator of the Back to the Future franchise. The self-funded film hasn’t garnered much attention since it was released in 2002, which is unfortunate considering the star-studded cast, intelligent script, and entertaining take on the road trip formula.

Neal Oliver (James Marsden), an aspiring but unsuccessful artist, wants to know the answer to his life. On his 22 nd birthday, like many at his age, he stands at the gateway to adulthood and yearns to know what purpose his life holds. He’s pressured by an overbearing father (Jim Bourgeois), an attorney-at-law who’s determined to send Neal to his Alma Mater and continue his legacy, and a girlfriend who’s more interested in psychoanalyzing Neal than supporting him.

However, after encountering the devious O.W. Grant (Gary Oldman) and the all-knowing Ray (Christopher Lloyd), Neal is sent on a trip across the fabled, supposedly-nonexistent Interstate 60 to deliver a mysterious package. Along the way, he encounters an assortment of individuals (including Ann-Margret, Kurt Russell, Chris Cooper) in fantastical situations that lead Neal down a path of spiritual and moral edification.

The Vehicle

Interstate 60 Review BMW Red convertible Family

While the BMW convertible Neal receives for his birthday is a gem, it’s really for his dad. Photo: Screen Media Films

The car Neal drives on his trek along Interstate 60 plays a critical role in his journey of self-discovery.

Our protagonist receives a brand new 1998 BMW 328i Cabrio convertible from his father, who boasts about its features: “Fire engine red. Fuel injected. 160 horses. Car phone.” However, such a car does not appeal to Neal; red is his Dad’s favorite color. Even his father’s signature phrase, “TAK 2 BNK,” is engraved on the license plate. The BMW wholly represents the legacy that’s thrust upon Neal by his father, the “free ride” he is expected to take in exchange for compromising on his own dreams.

The father/son relationship, and the legacy looming over him, is central to Neal’s dilemma and search for purpose. Thus, without revealing any spoilers, the importance of the car’s symbolism necessitates an ending that involves Neal bucking his father’s expectations and asserting his own vision for his life.

The BMW is also a means for Neal to travel across Interstate 60 and interact with a multitude of characters by picking up hitchhikers and delivering them to destinations along the way.

Our Interstate 60 Review

Interstate 60 is ultimately about two things: the ethical fiber of America’s John Everyman, and the moral humanity of each viewer.

If Frank Capra were making films in the twenty-first century, they’d arguably resemble Interstate 60 . There isn’t a scene that passes without a character sharing a profoundly striking thought about human nature or an interaction possessing rich metaphoric significance. O.W. Grant alters reality, going back in time, to place the protagonist on a road to learn life lessons, much like Clarence does in It’s a Wonderful Life .

Interstate 60 review Gary Oldman

O.W. Grant (Oldman) enjoys messing with your life by granting your wishes in unexpected ways. Photo: Screen Media Films

What other movie with mainstream actors teaches lessons about the drawbacks to promiscuity, addictions, deceit, and legalism using purely parabolic means? Instead of employing realistic experiences, Interstate 60 relies on fantastical allegories, much like Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress , to offer an anthropological study of humanity.

Interstate 60 is rife with religious and spiritual philosophy, mythology, doppelgangers, destiny, altered realities, and symbolism which deeply exemplify the themes in subsequent viewings. In many ways, the film is likened to an extended episode of The Twilight Zone .

Just when the heavy-handed themes become a bit too wholesome, the film includes some soft R-rated material to remind viewers that such lessons are important for adults just as much as for kids. What film for adults genuinely cover these subjects for the average twenty-something viewer?

It walks a fine line between moral cheese and adult content. The preachy moral lessons which will frustrate the skeptical, pessimistic viewers but the adult content will likely deter most conservative viewers. However, if your tastes fall somewhere in the middle, like us, this movie has the potential to become a favorite.

Washington, Oregon legislators press I-5 Bridge replacement officials about permits, cost and impact on property owners Updated 6 hours ago

Construction set to begin in late 2025.

Springtime leaves frame a view of the Interstate Bridge on April 29, 2021.

Legislators from Washington and Oregon who convened virtually Monday to discuss replacement of the Interstate 5 Bridge raised concerns about progress on the project.

“We are steaming toward … construction,” Greg Johnson, the project’s administrator, assured them. He said it’s set to begin late 2025.

Legislators, however, questioned him about delays. For example, the U.S. Coast Guard has yet to approve plans , and the draft environmental impact statement — a document needed to start construction — has been delayed multiple times and is yet to be released.

Johnson assured the lawmakers that both are on the horizon.

“We have solidified anticipated timelines for these key federal decisions and permits and the supporting work necessary for these approvals,” he said.

He added that project leaders hope to wrap up the required draft supplemental environmental review this year and then get approval and a “record of decision” from the federal government late next year.

A record of decision is federal acknowledgment that a project meets all federal guidelines and is eligible for federal dollars.

Vancouver Republicans Sen. Lynda Wilson and Rep. Paul Harris raised concerns about the impact the project might have on property owners in the path of the new bridge.

“Have we determined the actual footprint of the bridge yet?” Harris asked.

Not yet, Johnson replied.

“We do not get to a final footprint until we have officially a record of decision, which will come next year,” he said. “We’re getting information out to folks on what this preliminary footprint looks like and what those impacts could possibly be. But we cannot go into real estate discussions until we have a record of decision.”

Wilson pressed the issue.

“We’ve heard from several people who are concerned about whether eminent domain will be used and whether their properties will be sucked into the path of this bridge,” she said. “Will they have an opportunity to weigh in on this?”

Johnson said everyone will get a chance to weigh in on the proposed footprint when it is released. Following the release of the draft environmental impact statement, there will be a mandatory 60-day public comment period along with public hearings, he said.

“Eminent domain is the last tool in the toolbox that our real estate folks use to acquire property for a project or program like this,” Johnson added. “Once we get into the right-of-way phase, we will be having detailed conversations with those folks, so they understand their rights, and they understand the negotiation process for the value of their home, and how their home gets valued in the process.”

Johnson encouraged people who are concerned to visit the program’s office hours .

“You can set up a time to come and talk to us,” he said. “We will talk to anyone who has an interest, whether they’re in the footprint or outside of the footprint.”

Lawmakers also questioned program officials about the cost of expanding the bridge to better accommodate walkers, bikers and people who use mobility devices .

“We are not ignoring the needs of highway traffic,” Johnson said. “We’re building something that if you choose not to use a car, then you’ll be able to get safely across this bridge.”

Program officials also discussed the status of multiple needed permits, potential tolling scenarios and funding for the project. Officials also shared visualizations for the replacement bridge, discussed workforce readiness and answered frequently asked questions.

“We are on a good path to get this project underway,” Johnson said.

Record-setting Martin County High School track team member dead after interstate crash

PORT ST. LUCIE − Kenna Wilson, 18, who died last week after a car crash, was remembered as a “fiery competitor” who held herself to a high standard.

Wilson, who had been on the Martin County High School track team, died early Friday after a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Port St. Lucie. The crash, about 2 miles north of Becker Road, was reported about 1:43 a.m.

She was in a Honda Accord driven south by a 17-year-old Stuart boy. The crash happened after a southbound Lexus collided with the rear of their vehicle. Both vehicles left the roadway and struck trees.

Lorena Wilson, Kenna Wilson's stepmother who adopted her after her mother died, said Kenna Wilson was energetic and “the life of the party.”

“She made everybody laugh. She was funny,” Lorena Wilson said Tuesday. “She wanted the music blasting. She would wake up and she just wanted to get going.”

Chris Thompson, head coach of the Martin County High School track team, on Monday said Wilson was on a four-person team that set a new relay record of 49.64 seconds. Each member runs 100 meters, he said.

“She came to us as a sophomore. She's just like a very fiery competitor,” Thompson said Monday. “From the moment she was around, you just can tell that she wanted to win.”

Thompson said the record was set May 8 — the last track meet of the season.

“They basically worked together every day all season, doing workouts together, working on their relay handoff, just trying to put together that perfect race,” Thompson said of the four on the team.

Lorena Wilson said her daughter was in the process of signing up for the fire academy at Indian River State College. Kenna Wilson, she said, was a Martin County native, and very competitive.

“She was driven. She liked to take care of herself,” Lorena Wilson said. “Sportswise and healthwise, she would train hard and she would try to eat well.”

Kenna Wilson had a gift for athletic endeavors, and enjoyed working out.

“She's very hyper,” Lorena Wilson said. “She can't just sit and read, and she needed to do something active.”

Lorena Wilson recalled dance parties in the kitchen and living room. She said her daughter had a beautiful voice, and loved singing, with Billie Eilish being a favorite growing up.

Lorena Wilson said that before the crash, Kenna Wilson had just left Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital in Port St. Lucie, trying to visit a friend who was in the emergency room.

Thompson said Wilson graduated this year.

“She wanted to go out on a high note in the program,” he said. “She wanted to accomplish that her senior year … to break that school record.”

Thompson said Wilson, of Palm City, had a high standard for herself.

“Sometimes that was portrayed through a quiet intensity,” he said. “Other times it was portrayed through motivation and pushing her teammates.”

Kenna Wilson, whose biological mother died in 2019, enjoyed going to the beach and sunsets. She often sent photos of the sky with pinks and oranges, Lorena Wilson said.

“Every time she would see that, she snapped pictures,” Lorena Wilson said. “I call it the Kenna sky now, and we've had a couple of those in the last few days.”

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez are remaining on good terms as they try to work out their marital issues.

The pair, currently living apart, reportedly see each other a couple of times a week amid their hectic schedules.

“They’re still friendly and see each other every few days,” a source close to Lopez, 54, told People on Tuesday.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck.

The couple got together over the weekend at their 43,000-square-foot Beverly Hills, Calif. mansion, which they recently listed for “around $65 million” despite purchasing the property last year.

On Sunday, the “Good Will Hunting” star was photographed arriving at the home around 5 p.m. and leaving nearly four hours later without his wife.

The 51-year-old actor reportedly moved into a Brentwood home in mid-May and has been house-hunting in Los Angeles ever since.

A source previously told Page Six that Affleck has “come to his senses” about their ill-fated marriage and is ready to move on.

Although Affleck is “sad” things didn’t work out, he is reportedly “focused on his work” and being a “great dad” to his three children with ex-wife Jennifer Garner , a source told Entertainment Tonight.

Meanwhile, Lopez is reportedly ready to move into her own digs.

The “Jenny From the Block” singer recently started “shopping around for her own home” and has been “leaning on” her family amid the trying time.

“At this point, they are just doing their own thing,” the insider told ET Monday. “They went into their relationship very optimistic and thought things could change, but they haven’t.”

Although the estranged duo are still on good terms, they were last spotted together publicly on June 2 at Affleck’s son Samuel’s basketball game.

However, the pair didn’t show any PDA while greeting each other outside the sporting event, opting for air kisses on the cheek rather than the real thing.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California firefighters made significant progress Sunday to tame a wind-driven wildfire that scorched thousands of acres 60 miles (97 kilometers) east of San Francisco, burned down a home and forced residents to flee the area near the central California city of Tracy.

The fire erupted Saturday afternoon in the grassy hills managed by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, one of the country’s key centers for nuclear weapons science and technology. The cause was under investigation.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said the research center was not under immediate threat from the blaze, dubbed the Corral Fire, which had devoured some 22 square miles (52 square kilometers) by Sunday afternoon. The fire was 50% contained as of Sunday evening.

Thousands of people in the area, including parts of the city of Tracy with a population of 100,000, were ordered to leave for evacuation centers Saturday. The evacuation order was lifted to allow residents to return home starting Sunday evening. Tracy is about 70 miles (112 kilometers) south of California’s capital in Sacramento.

CalFire Battalion Chief Josh Silveira said Sunday afternoon the fire “burned right up to the homes” in the area and destroyed one house. With calmer winds and milder weather Sunday, Silveira said he didn’t expect the fire to grow.

Two firefighters suffered minor to moderate burns on Saturday and were expected to make a full recovery, Silveira said.

The wildfire presented no threat to any laboratory facilities or operations and had moved away from the site, Lawrence Livermore spokesperson Paul Rhien said in a statement to The Associated Press early Sunday.

“As a precaution, we have activated our emergency operations center to monitor the situation through the weekend,” Rhien said.

Photos showed a wall of flames moving over the parched landscape as dark smoke billowed into the sky.

The wildfire also forced the closure of two major highways, including an interstate that connects the San Francisco Bay Area to San Joaquin County in central California. But they had reopened by Sunday afternoon.

The San Joaquin County Office of Emergency Services on Saturday issued an evacuation order for areas west of the California Aqueduct, south of Corral Hollow Creek, west to Alameda County and south to Stanislaus County. A temporary evacuation point was established at Larch Clover Community Center in Tracy. The county also asked residents to temporarily use boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking and cooking purposes.

Sunday’s high temperature for Tracy was expected to reach 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29 degrees Celsius), with no rain in the forecast. But hotter conditions are on their way.

The National Weather Service said “dangerously hot conditions” with highs of 103 F to 108 F (39.4 C to 42.2 C) were expected later in the week for the San Joaquin Valley, an area that encompasses Tracy. Wind gusts of up to 45 mph (72 kph) lashed the region Saturday night, according to meteorologist Idamis Shoemaker of the weather service in Sacramento.

Peipert reported from Denver.

  6. ‎Interstate 60 (2002) directed by Bob Gale • Reviews, film
