It’s Never Too Late To Be What You Might Have Been
George Eliot? Adelaide Anne Procter? Apocryphal? Anonymous?
Dear Quote Investigator: My favorite quotation about untapped potential and enduring spirit is attributed to the prominent Victorian novelist George Eliot:
It is never too late to be what you might have been.
This popular saying has been printed on refrigerator magnets, posters, shirts, and key chains. But I have never seen the source specified. Are these really the words of George Eliot?
Quote Investigator: George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans who died in 1880. Researchers have been unable to locate this quotation in her books or letters. Currently, the ascription to Eliot has no substantive support.
The earliest evidence of an exact match known to QI appeared in “Literary News: A Monthly Journal of Current Literature” in 1881. The editor held a contest to gather the best quotations from Eliot’s oeuvre. The following was the announcement printed in the April 1881 issue: [1] 1881 April, Literary News Prize Question No. 31: Subject: Gems from George Eliot, Quote Page 113, Publisher and Editor: F. Leypoldt, New York. (Google Books Full View) link
Prize Question No 31. Subject: Gems from George Eliot. Quote the most striking passage known to you from George Eliot’s writings; not to exceed thirty words. Answers due May 20.
In June 1881 the excerpts submitted by readers were printed in the periodical; however, they were not fully vetted for accuracy. Also, some entries did not specify the originating text. For example, these four items were included in the list. Boldface has been added to excerpts: [2] 1881 June, Literary News Prize Question No. 31: Subject: Gems from George Eliot, (Quote Number 23), Start Page 176, Quote Page 177, Publisher and Editor: F. We present herewith the selections made by our readers from the writings of George Eliot. Excluding all that exceed the prescribed limit of thirty words, we present herewith seventy-one selections. … 21. “Our deeds determine us as much as we determine our deeds.”—Adam Bede 22. “A woman’s choice generally means taking the only man she can get.” —Middlemarch. 23. “It is never too late to be what you might have been.” 24. “I’m not denyin’ the women are foolish; God Almighty made ’em to match the men.”
Statement 21 was correct though truncated. Statement 22 was slightly inaccurate; the novel used the word “usually” instead of “generally”. Statement 23 has never been found in the works of Eliot. Statement 24 did not list a source, but it did appear in “Adam Bede”.
This important citation with the incorrect attribution of the target quotation was identified by Professor Leah Price. After 1881 quotation number 23 started to appear in a variety of publications credited to George Eliot, and “Literary News” may have been the prime locus for its dissemination.
A very interesting partial match for the saying appeared earlier in a poem in 1859. Details are given further below.
Here are additional selected citations in chronological order.
A thematic precursor was included in a lecture published in London in 1847. The following passage highlighted the possibility of growth and accomplishment late in life: [3] 1847, Sequel to Lectures Delivered at Literary and Mechanics’ Institutions by William Henry Leatham, “Lecture 1: The Rise, Growth, Maturity, and Prospects of English Literature, &c, … Continue reading
It is never too late to become a scholar, or a great man. Cato, the censor, learnt Greek in his old age. King Alfred was twelve years old before he could repeat his alphabet. Cromwell was forty-two years of age before he fought his first battle—and Blake was fifty before he entered the navy.
In 1859 the poet Adelaide Anne Procter released “The Ghost in the Picture Room” in the special Christmas issue of the London periodical “All the Year Round” which was edited by Charles Dickens. QI believes that the following couplet embodied a strong conceptual match for the quotation under investigation and a partial syntactic match:
No star is ever lost we once have seen, We always may be what we might have been.
The larger context within the work discussed the possibility of leading a “noble life”. The vicissitudes of subsisting might deflect one from pursuing an ideal path, but the author contended that crucial alternatives were not foreclosed, and one might still pursue a “noble life” at any time. The poem became better known under the title “A Legend of Provence”: [4] 1859 December 13, All the Year Round: A Weekly Journal, Conducted by Charles Dickens, (The Haunted House: The Extra Christmas Number of All the Year Round. Containing the amount of two ordinary … Continue reading [5] 1864, The Poems of Adelaide A. Have we not all, amid life’s petty strife, Some pure ideal of a noble life That once seemed possible? Did we not hear The flutter of its wings, and feel it near, And just within our reach? It was. And yet We lost it in this daily jar and fret, And now live idle in a vague regret; But still our place is kept, and it will wait, Ready for us to fill it, soon or late. No star is ever lost we once have seen, We always may be what we might have been. Since good, tho’ only thought, has life and breath, God’s life—can always be redeemed from death; And evil, in its nature, is decay, And any hour can blot it all away; The hopes that, lost, in some far distance seem. May be the truer life, and this the dream.
Procter’s couplet was memorable, and it has continued to circulate up to the present day. In 1879 “Replies: A Weekly Journal of Question and Answer” printed the words within a response to a query about the second line: [6] 1879 December 20, Replies: A Weekly Journal of Question and Answer, Conducted by Malcolm C. Salaman, Volume 2, Number 38, Answers to Correspondents, Quote Page 189, Column 1, Published by The … Continue reading
Devorgill.—The line, ‘We always may be what we might have been,’ occurs in a passage in the ‘Legend of Provence,’ by Adelaide Anne Procter— ‘No star is ever lost we once have seen, We always may be what we might have been.’
In 1881 the quotation being traced was printed in “Literary News” as noted previously. The expression was submitted by a reader of the periodical and no source was designated:
In 1884 the saying was included in an article about Eliot published in the “Illinois School Journal’. The phrase appeared in a section called “Extracts” that listed twenty quotes attributed to Eliot. [7] 1884 February, Illinois School Journal, General Exercises by Edward Bangs, (Discussion of George Eliot: 1820-1880), Start Page 250, Quote Page 250, Normal, Illinois. (Google Books Full View) link
In 1887 “The English Language: Its Grammar, History and Literature” was published, and a section about George Eliot’s prose style praised her work exuberantly: [8] 1887, The English Language: Its Grammar, History and Literature by J. M. D. Meiklejohn (John Miller Dow Meiklejohn), Quote Page 365, D.C. Heath & Company, Boston, Massachusetts. (Google Books … Continue reading
Her power is sometimes almost Shakespearian. Like Shakespeare, she gives us a large number of wise sayings, expressed in the pithiest language. The following are a few:— “It is never too late to be what you might have been.” “It is easy finding reasons why other people should be patient.” “Genius, at first, is little more than a great capacity for receiving discipline.”
The maxim was not universally embraced. In 1896 a book titled “The Education of the Central Nervous System” was sharply critical because the author contended that training in the early years of life was essential: [9] 1896, The Education of the Central Nervous System: A Study of Foundations, Especially of Sensory and Motor Training by Reuben Post Halleck, Quote Page 94, Macmillan Company, New York. From this mistaken notion arose such adages as: “It is never too late to be what you might have been.” It would be nearer the truth to say: “It is always too late to be what you might have been.” With each advancing year, this becomes an absolute truth in the case of the vast majority who have reached the age of twenty.
In 1897 William DeVere, self-described tramp poet of the West, published a short piece titled “Horse Philosophy” that included a set of adages and a rephrased unattributed version of Procter’s words: [10] 1897, Jim Marshall’s New Planner and Other Western Stories (Specially adapted for public reading) by William De Vere, Horse Philosophy, Quote Page 74, M. Witmark & Sons, New York. (Google … Continue reading
And try to do to others as you’d have them do to you. Remember that no star is lost that you might once have seen, Remember that you always may be what you might have been, No matter what your task in life be sure you never shirk,
In 2011 “The New Yorker” magazine published “Middlemarch and Me: What George Eliot Teaches Us” by Rebecca Mead who discussed the quotation and its mysterious ascription to Eliot. Mead’s stance was skeptical, and she recounted the words of Professor Leah Price: [11] 2011 February 14, The New Yorker, Life and Letters: Middlemarch and Me: What George Eliot teaches us by Rebecca Mead, Start Page 76, Quote Page 82, Column 2 and 3,The New Yorker Magazine, Inc., New … Continue reading
I’ve always assumed it was apocryphal. It shows up nowhere in full text searches of G.E.’s work. What’s strange is not that the attribution is so persistent but that it starts very early.
Price told Mead about the 1881 contest in “Literary News” that presented the first known instance of the quotation.
In conclusion, QI speculates that the quote attributed to George Eliot is traceable to the line written by Adelaide Anne Procter: “We always may be what we might have been”. In this scenario Procter’s statement would have been rephrased and then reassigned to Eliot. This process may have occurred in the mind of the individual who sent the quote to “Literary News”. Alternatively, the transition may have occurred in multiple steps. Perhaps future research will uncover these intermediary steps. Of course, other hypotheses are not ruled out.
(Great thanks to Karen Pfeiffer Jones @nykaren24 whose inquiry gave impetus to QI to formulate this question and initiate this exploration. Special thanks to Rebecca Mead and Leah Price for their very valuable efforts.)

Life Potential
Why it’s never too late to change your life and live differently.
Every day we live our lives in constant motion, and with that motion, there will always be a flow or some kind of change that follows. Some changes we welcome wholeheartedly, while others we might find ourselves pushing aside to avoid them.
Now, it’s time to ask ourselves the honest question – how often do we limit ourselves from opportunities, experiences, and even give up certain dreams because we’re digging up the most used excuses in the book? How often do we cross things off of our bucket list, not because we’ve completed them, but because we’re too fixated on how we’re not able to or capable of doing them?
One time is one too many. Plans are meant to change, and so is life. And it’s never too late to change your life.
Here are the steps to getting rid of the mindset roadblocks and how to achieve the life you’ve always wanted.
It’s Never Too Late – Three Roadblocks Holding You Back
1. i’m too old to start.
As the saying goes, “age is just a number,” and it’s actually just a measurement of time lived .
We often associate our age as a timeline for our goals.
I want to move to the city by 25. I want to have a successful business by 30. I want to own a house by 35. I want to have kids by 40.
It’s when our goals aren’t met that the instant feeling of failure comes trickling in. The essence of time is not to be used as a set goal but instead as a guideline.
Life happens simultaneously and at a different pace than everyone around you. There’s a huge difference between getting distracted by life’s curve balls and letting those moments define you versus becoming aware of them and finding an alternative route.
- Vincent Van Gogh didn’t paint until 27.
- Julia Child didn’t know French cuisine until 30. She only started appearing on The French Chef after turning 51.
- The late Alan Rickman didn’t start acting until he was 42.
- Fauja Singh, who became the first 100-year-old to run a marathon, started running marathons at the age of 89.
Still think it’s too late? In the end, time shouldn’t be the essence of what to accomplish by when, but instead a guideline to show us if we’re on track and if that bucket list is still in alignment with you.
2. “I Don’t Have Enough Money”
How often do we say, “I don’t have enough money,” versus “I have more than enough money.” The phrase “I don’t have enough money” is so common and easily integrated into our daily conversations that we don’t notice the negative effect it has in return.
The relationship and conversations we have with money are actually more impactful on our being than we think. A scarcity mindset affects our goal-making, especially when we compare what we have to what seems more abundant. [1] Having a positive mindset is key to living the life you truly desire.
We often let money dictate the way we live our lives, and over time, the yearning and hunger to change our lives become more prominent – if not urgent.
An abundance mindset means to focus on what you have now instead of what you don’t have. Focusing your energy on being grateful for the opportunities money can already provide you – including the smartphone or computer you are currently using to read this article – is already changing the conversation you.
Everything in life requires energy. It takes the same amount of energy to talk negatively or positively about your circumstances, so why not take the latter?
3. “I’ll Start Tomorrow”
Starting tomorrow is always the greatest setback, and by pushing your personal goals to the side, you are subconsciously letting your brain know that it’s not of importance. Your goals always matter and hold value.
First, look and see if it’s a particular habit that is preventing you from going forward with your goals or reflect on where you are spending most of your time:
- Are you saying yes to everything and taking on other people’s projects more than your own?
- Are you burnt out?
- Are you feeling overwhelmed that you don’t know where to start?
The first step is always self-awareness.
How to Live Your Life Differently
1. define your what and why.
Think about what’s important to you and why this is the makeup of your core:
- Are you looking for a change in career ? If so, then dig deeper into why you want this career change and what are negotiable and non-negotiables in your new career.
- Are you looking for more free time to take on creative pursuits? Think about why this has significant value to you and what you’re willing to give up in your current situation to make room for this freedom.
- Are you looking to start completely new and move to an unfamiliar place? Think about what you like about that particular place and how it taps into your emotions.
To live differently, you must be comfortable enough with yourself because it all stems down to the confidence within you.
Your confidence and self-awareness are the drives that will push you to make uncomfortable decisions and navigate uncommon grounds when life tests you. Digging deep and getting to the core of it all can reassure you that these new paths align with your values.
2. Show Up for Yourself
If you want to live differently and feel more successful in your life, you must first begin to show up as that version of yourself.
Owning that you already have what it takes to go after what you want and that all you need to do is be true to that version of yourself is a part of boosting your self-esteem. Higher self-esteem is significantly associated with higher success. [2]
Put yourself in the shoes of people you admire. If you’re a writer who wants to finish writing a book, ask yourself what your favorite writer would be doing and how much time they are putting into their work. If you want to run a six-figure business, put yourself in the shoes of a six-figure business owner and adopt the same mindset.
Swap happy hours and Netflix binging for scheduled deep work. This refreshing perspective will energetically bring your vision into reality.
3. Little Makes More of an Impact
When you want to change your life, it doesn’t have to be this grandeur moment. Oftentimes, small steps and changes make more of an impact and return.
For instance, if one of your goals is to be healthier and shed some pounds this year, the common route would be to get a gym membership, establish a diet plan, and commit to exercising x times a week. While these are great ways to start, understand that good habits also take some time and patience to form.
In the meantime, healthier living isn’t only limited to dieting and exercising. It’s taking smaller bite-size steps, such as cutting sugar from your coffee, that can stretch far in the long run.
For example, you usually have your coffee black with one sugar packet. You drink two coffees in one day – one before work and another during work. One sugar packet is equivalent to about four grams of sugar, times the two cups you have daily. In one month alone, you are easily consuming 240 grams of sugar.
Little changes like cutting out sugar in your coffee intake can easily make a greater impact in the future.
Final Thoughts
Remember that it’s never too late to change your life, and factors such as age, time, or even experience shouldn’t hinder your yearning to pursue your dreams, projects, and live differently.
As our life continues forward, always remember that you are in constant motion and also in constant control . You are always more ready than you think you are. It comes down to the one life we live, and it’s always worth making it a great one.

Plans are meant to change , and so is life – it’s never too late to change your life. Identify those pesky roadblocks holding you back: age, money, and a “tomorrow” mindset.
The essence of time is not to be used as a set goal but instead as a guideline.
As the saying goes, “age is just a number,” and it’s actually just a measurement of time lived. Don’t let it hold you back.
Starting tomorrow is always the greatest setback , and by pushing your personal goals to the side, you are subconsciously letting your brain know that it’s not of importance.
Everything in life requires energy – it takes the same amount of energy to talk negatively or positively about your circumstances, so why not take the latter?

Why It’s Never Too Late to Create the Life You Want
Doesn’t matter if you’re 25, 35, 55 or 85 — it’s NEVER too late to change your priorities.
Because that’s what creating the life you want is really about: changing your priorities. Making room for more meaning. Figuring out how to focus on what really matters to you.
But it is absolutely NEVER too late to create the life you want. Why? Because you have tomorrow. And hopefully the next day, and the day after that. And each of those days is there for you to spend how you choose. The pure fact that they haven’t yet happened, that they’re waiting for you , means they hold so much more potential than what you’ve already done.
If you allow this to be complicated, it will be. You will come up with one BUT after another, and each will hold you back. Yet you can also choose to see this as rather simple: You only have one life. How do you want to spend it?
Sometimes considering — and debunking — the underlying reasons WHY we think it’s too late can help us move forward. So here are a few common excuses we use:
Excuse No. 1: You’ve invested so much time into your current path
It’s easy to get caught up in this line of thinking, and the longer we put off making a change, the more power we give to this excuse. Except here’s why it won’t help you in the long run: because that path you’ve been following is useless if it’s not what you want .
Plus, changing course does NOT mean throwing away what you’ve built. Even if the path you’ve forged so far feels like it will be of absolutely no use in your new life, it will serve some positive purpose. You’ve no doubt learned skills during those years that will transfer toward what you want to do next, even if you can’t easily transfer the primary skills. Chances are, if you’re looking for a change, you don’t want to use those primary skills anymore anyhow!
Even more importantly, the path you’ve taken until now has made you who you are . It has helped you discover what you want and what you don’t want. It’s easy to say in retrospect that you should’ve done something differently a few years ago, but how would you have known that then? You’ve learned it NOW for a reason: because NOW’s the time to make your change.
Excuse No. 2: Doing something different requires taking steps back
But are those really backward steps? In a lot of ways, they’re actually more forward than the steps you’re taking now, if they’re moving you toward something that will make you happy.
Think of them as backward steps in your old life, but forward steps in your new one. (Click to tweet this idea .)
Excuse No. 3: People might think you’re crazy/stupid/naive
Let me ask you this: Are these the same people who are also unhappy with their lives? Who are living stagnantly? Who would never make a change?
Probably. That’s why you need to surround yourself with go-getters . Find people who are living the lives they want, and look for ways to spend more time with those people, whether that’s online or in person. The more you surround yourself with people who are living “differently,” the more normal it will feel.
Soon it will seem crazy NOT to create the life you want. Soon you’ll be wondering why so many people are working jobs/stuck in relationships/fulfilling obligations that don’t make them happy. Why on earth would you spend your one life that way?
Excuse No. 4: Too many you-specific obstacles stand in your way
Maybe you don’t have enough money . Or you’ve got a phobia. Or you simply can’t see how to get from A to B.
The truth is, if you want this bad enough, you can work through whatever stands in your way.
Yes, you will have to make some sacrifices. You will have to make changes to how you live, will likely have to give up something else to gain what you want. You probably won’t be able to have it ALL, but you can have what you decide is most important to you.
Most of our obligations are actually choices . That means if you truly want to live your life differently, you will find a way around or through these scary obstacles, or maybe discover a new path altogether.
The point is, it IS possible. And the first step is realizing that none of these BUTs is big enough to hold you back.
So what should you do once you’ve realized it’s NOT too late to make a change?
1. Figure out what you want . For some of us, this is the most difficult part. But even if the answer seems out of reach, it is somewhere within you . You have ideas, feelings and urges, and you probably know more about what you want than you think; your ideal career might even be staring you in the face . The mountain here is tying all of those ideas together into a concrete WANT, a desire you can act on.
Sometimes we can’t figure that out on our own. Sometimes we need help from someone who 1) has thought through issues like this before and 2) can see things in you that you might not be able to see yourself. That’s why I often recommend people in this situation consider a career coach. I used to think it was hokey to talk to someone about stuff you feel like you should be able to figure out yourself, but collaborating and brainstorming in a safe space can be a powerful thing. It might be the quickest way — or even the only way — to your ah-ha moment.
2. Make a plan, and break it into mini action items. This is the approach I take for everything, because it makes even the most daunting task seem doable. (It’s also the way I present my courses .) Plus, if you do ONE thing each day to work toward your goal, you will make serious progress, no matter how tiny that one thing is.
3. Execute! Little by little, cross items off your list, taking baby steps toward your goal.
Don’t become one of those people who says they’ll make a change and ever does. You DESERVE to live the life you want! But only YOU can make it happen. Only YOU can give yourself this gift. The rest of us can root you on, encourage you and make a meaningful life seem normal, but only you can actually make the change.
Have you ever felt like it’s too late to do what you want? Are you feeling that way now? Tell us about it in the comments, and maybe we can help.

Alexis- Awesome!!
Made me think of Christopher McCandless’ and one of his quotes from the book Into the Wild.
“So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.”
Slightly different in context but similar in it’s messaging.
Enjoy your travels!
Thanks for this, Alexis! Even when we’re still in our 20s, it’s easy to get stuck on auto-pilot and resign ourselves to a fairly predictable, “average” life as-is for the next 50 years. It’s scary and exciting to realize life is what we make of it!
Coming from a new mom – it’s easy for us to think all career aspirations have to be put on hold while the kiddos are young. That’s just a lack of creativity, or worse – a lame excuse. I’m exploring a move from Blogger to my own domain so I can shed some light on that!
One day I woke up and realized the one thing that is scarier than changing your life is reaching the end without living your dream. I always wanted to be a travel photographer. So I just started doing it! It actually is that simple. I just started living the life I wanted. Sure, I might not have nearly as much money now after switching careers, but I am much happier.
Thanks for simplifying it this way, Anne! GO YOU!
I’ve been staying on an organic farm with no Internet for close to two weeks writing my book. In the last few days a new visitor arrived from Germany. I’ve never met someone who’s so negative about everything and what I view through my eyes as opportunities she sees as obstacles. It’s really made me realise that it’s never too late at all to change your perspective, adopt a different attitude or just `try’ to see things and do things differently then you’ve always done it. Life is short, live it well
So true — it’s really all about how you see the world.
Great reminders. Sometimes people focus on the past and need to look toward the future. Make a decision and don’t look back.
A super-inspring post, Lexi, thanks. It’s so true that changing paths DOESN’T make our past a waste of time; too many people get stuck on that, and you explain the reasoning perfectly. We can think of whatever we’re doing now as an investment in what we want to do next, regardless of what that is.
I’ve been living this for what feels like forever. I started making the first steps about four years ago. Finally in the last couple of months I feel like I’m getting on a path. Just start! Do something! That’s what I keep telling myself.
Excellent post Alexis! This reminds me of one of my all-time favorite quotes: “a year from now, you’ll wish that you started today.” You are SO right, it is never too late to make a change. Even if you’re 55 years old and you want to get a Bachelors degree, why not start now? Four years from now, you’ll be 59 anyway–so why not be 59 with a Bachelors degree? Thanks so much for the much-needed reminder that it’s never too late to make a big change in our lives.
YES! Love your example.
Love the example (and the quote) too!
i don’t want this to be one more year with nothing to show for it besides surviving.
Alexis, all I can say is A-MEN. This. All of this. I am nodding my head.
My brother just asked this very question: “Is it too late for me?” Of course I told him no, and gave him a thousand reasons to believe otherwise. Now I have more fantastic back-up–sending him this post.
(Sidenote: I really appreciate your direct, clear communication style, particularly because the “change your life” topics are too often full of flowery language that doesn’t resonate with me. I tend to zone out and eventually dismiss posts of that nature, but this…this is good, helpful stuff.)
Thanks, Cassie!
Your bro might also benefit from this one: http://alexisgrant.com/2011/11/03/wanting-to-love-your-job-isnt-asking-too-much/
Clear = practical = action = results 🙂 That’s why I go with clear all the way!
Oh YEAH! Love this one, too. Sending it along!
I’ve been trying to change career paths after being away from working due to illness. It would seem that I’m considered an employment risk. Can you offer any concrete suggestions/advice. Thank You.
Tough one! Can you work your way into the new career little by little? First start with it as a side gig? Find a way to volunteer in that industry so you can learn? Prove you’ll stick with it, and you’ll be able to add more and more responsibility (and pay) to your plate. Good luck!
In addition to what Alexis has stated, try to learn some other skills while you are making plans to make the change. Polishing up writing skills with online courses/visiting good blogs like Alexis’ can prepare you for careers that need such skills. I taught students Maths for more than a decade before I took on a journalist’s job. I polished up my writing skills by buying books from a correspondence writing school and wrote my own stuff (poetry, short stories, essays, letters to editor, etc) while I was still teaching. (Now in journalism, they still want me back teaching students how to do their numbers but I decided to stay on and write.)
How can you make your efforts pay off for yourself without depending on an employer? You don’t say what career you’re interested in, but I’d say it’s a great time – since you’re not working – to make some networking connections through local clubs and groups that will help you build a niche for yourself.
Also, look into temping opportunities – maybe the field you’re interested in would be available through a temp agency on a short-term basis and that employment would lead to something bigger.
I would live to volunteer or work part time, but I have to support myself and pay my medical expenses. Therefore, I actually do need a paying position.
Temping agencies can find you positions that are full time, but on a short-term basis. They might provide the pay and hours you need while also proving you are dependable.
This is so true! Like another commenter mentioned above, even in your twenties it’s easy to get stuck in a rut. That’s why I made the jump to starting my own business NOW, even though everyone kept telling me I didn’t have enough experience. And guess what? It’s slow and steady, but it worked. I’m not an utter failure, and I’m actually happy with what I’m doing with my life at only 22! Now I look back at where I was at this time last year and think about how much I’ve changed and accomplished in that time–which only makes me more excited to see what goals I’ll have met by 2014! Just do it really is the best advice.
Oh my gosh Alexis! You are so in my head this week! I literally just wrote a post about this very same thing. I’m at a point where I know I want to change directions in my career, but sometimes I just need to be encouraged that what I’m doing is the right thing and that it will make me happier in the long run. Thanks for this post!
Oh wow. Share the link to your post!
Awesome post, Alexis! I’m trying to work on my “dream project” on the side. The days I do work on it are the days I’m a happier mama and wife :-). Even ten minutes a day means you’re moving forward.
How do you approach a mentor? If you already know someone who’s doing what you want to do, how do you approach them without having them feel like you’ll be taking a lot of their time and that you’re “authentic”?
Hey Kalyani — About how to approach a mentor… What can you offer them? When you approach them, don’t act needy… act like you have something to share, too. Ask lots of questions about what they do and show how you’re a sponge, soaking it up. And ask for an ACTION item, not just getting in touch to chat. Can you help them with their business? What do they need that you can help with? These are your skills — how can you use them to help them achieve their next big goal?
that is quite true and as president Obama we can say “YES WE CAN” and changes begins with you. thanx.
“Most of our obligations are actually choices.” SO TRUE. And I’m totally on the baby step boat — just a little bit each day will keep you moving towards your goals. Great post!
Great post! And it’s so, so, so true. I’m 2.5 years away from 50, and I’m working this year on making my writing/making “hobbies” dependable enough to carry me through my golden years. I probably will completely abandon my dreams to be in the theater in NYC, simply because I have a family and roots that would make that nearly impossible… but I can still be my creative self and achieve so much joy from other creative endeavors. I just wrote about this myself yesterday… great timing. 🙂
A bit belated, but this post was one of my favorites (so much so I finally have the guts to comment!) I’m pretty good at realizing I’ve got to make my outside writing ambitions a priority and that it’s up to me, but I struggle a *ton* with Excuse No. 3. Your post made me ask myself specifically whose judgment I’m afraid of. In some cases, yes, these are people who are somewhat stagnating and unhappy in their own careers, but I’m also afraid my successful go-getter friends — further in their careers than me — will secretly laugh or roll their eyes at my new blog. There’s such a vulnerability inherent in showing that you’re “trying” and not quite there yet, especially online. Thanks as always, Alexis!
This is the first time I have found your blog and I am glad I did. I recently have found that the path I was on may have been what a lot of others though was great, however I was not excited about it. I was scared for a LONG time that people would think I was dumb, or naive for giving it up. Just a few months ago I did give it up, started my own business, and am now about to sell my house and do some traveling! This is something that I have always wanted to do, and now I can!
Will be coming back for more great posts, so keep them coming,
Go Chris! That’s awesome to hear. Lots of people here who feel the same way, so yes, please come back!
So how do I start over, I’m extremely unhappy. I was doing what I thought would make me happy now I hate it. I have to support myself and my son. I wanna go back to school, bt I don’t really know what for . I have a couple things in mind that I love. Bt, again I have to make a living. I want to live somewhere always nice and warm and have a great career doing what I love. I’m really always depressed about my situation and I never feel like I’m doing anything positive for me not going forward. Please help!
I am currently in physician assistant school doing my clinical rotations and since I started clinicals, I felt like I didn’t really fully explore all of my career options or do enough shadowing to explore my current career. It is hard because I have never worked full time and at the same time, I need to be constantly studying and learning, yet my doubt over my career path keeps me from staying focused and getting the studying done that I need to feel competent.
I have always liked volunteering and so I thought maybe I might enjoy working for a nonprofit, but I don’t really know and right now, I have come so far that it seems pointless to quit when I only have a year left in the program. People encourage me saying I am only stressed and doubting because it is so hard; I don’t really know, but a year ago, I thought of quitting and I wished I had done it then. Others say that it won’t hurt to finish because I am only 23, but I hate the way I feel right now. I just want to be happy with what I’m doing, yet I am so depressed/stressed. I don’t know what to do.

Hi Alexis, thanks for the great article. I too is stuck in the same situation. I have a career of 8 years in Investment Banking but I have not enjoyed it much. I have been wanting to do this for long time but could not bring enough zeal for the same. Now, I am really serious for going after a career in IB but my friends and other people says that it is almost impossible to make a career switch to IB after being in IT for so many years.
What should I do now? Shall I pay attention to my friend’s advice or shall I take the leap of faith and follow my heart?
Thank you for this. It is great to read that many people still believe. Still dream and see a bigger picture. I am surrounded by a family that doesn’t believe in greatness and it broke my heart for years. Made me feel so alone and I struggled with depression. Now I have realized I am aloud to have my own vision and I am meeting more and more people like me that are ambitious and creative. Life is good. Everyday is better than the last. And you become what you think about most of the time – Earl Nightingale. Peace out Jenni Bloom
This kind of blather is mind boggling. Sometimes it really is too late. How come no one admits that?
If I believed that, Dave, I’d say it out loud!
I disagree that there is always a way. I had planned on attending medical school, but half way through undergrad I got buried under a mountain of medical bills. I sacrificed everything else in my life, and worked myself into the hospital (twice), but none of that was enough to get past the pile of debt…and get on with med-school… Now, over 20 years later, that goal is further away than when I started. At 45 years old, best case scenario is me finishing med-school in my early to mid-60’s. And, that is if I can somehow triple my current income.
I’m so incredibly burnt out on the eat-work-sleep life trying to reach my goals, and just losing more ground than I gain.
Hi, I am 38, Married and having two kid, boy 9 years and girl 6 years, till a month back never thought i can be without my business, i am main in my company use to think nothing will happen without me, but today i am out, all it took is one minute to take the decision.
There is no ending for the business, but your life will end very soon, thought of living life the way i want, Now i realized there is so much is there in life to enjoy, money is not the ultimate, but there is something more than that, i am going in search of new life, hope it will be a eye opener for other people who work till the death, who never realize they lost there life for nothing.
But feeling great, its just a beginning…….
I am 85, a retired Florida attorney with a pacemaker, who just moved to California last year.
Since coming here, all I do is clean house, do paperwork, repair the house, go to doctor appointments. I’m still sleeping on the sofa.
I can’t practice law because I haven’t passed the Calif Bar. I’m divorced from a 34-year marriage. I need to get a life, in addition to my daughter’s, who has a job and active social life. Where do I go from here? I live in a 55+ community.
I want to study register a national diploma of office administration for distance learning but I think its too late because of my age, I am 35 and have been working as a secretary at a law firm for the past 7 years. I only have matric certificate, certificate in computer literacy and certificate in office administration. I really want to further my studies but my age discourage me. I think it is too late to study at this age.
I am 55 years old. For the last 20 years I raised 2, now very good men, as a single parent. Often during those 20 years I worked 2 to 3 jobs. Today I have a so-so job, little to no money and all the time in the world to do “what ever I want” but, I have no idea where to start. I have taken some college classes for Business Administration and have a Cosmetology License. If there is anyone out there who has been in this situation I would welcome your advice! 🙂
I am 58 and experiencing the greatest decision-making crisis in my life up to this point. For me, this is hard to believe because it seems most people I talk to have gone through this at significantly younger stages of life. I have not until now done what most rational people with reasonable means have done. Instead, I have gone through my entire adult life simply subsisting and going from one instant gratification to the next. It never once occurred to me during that time that some hard work would be necessary to create a life that would reward me as I approached this age. My impression from the responses above and other sources is that most people my age have had major accomplishments by this time in their lives (they did the hard work), have outgrown those accomplishments, and are now ready for a new challenge. That is all well and good, however, how does a person like me cope with looking back and seeing a long list of empty yesterdays: no long term career, no family, no property, no financial security, basically nothing other than staying out of trouble with the law and the IRS. Oh, and by the way, at the age of 48 I decided to study part time and managed to get a Ph.D. It took me 9 years, and it looks like a great accomplishment on paper, but when I completed the degree, I realized that at 57 I was too old (yes, I said too old) to get a job based on my education level. The Ph.D., I realized, was just another little side-hobby of mine. Something to subsist on for a decade. If anyone responds, please don’t tell me education is wonderful, and it’s never too late to earn a high degree. With all due respect, I’ve heard this many times already. A Ph.D. late in life is great if you already have resources and an educational advancement will further enrich your life. For me, it was an attempt to “try something new” based on NO prior resources. I didn’t already have a job in the field I studied, so I came to the job market as a clean slate, only I was not in the body of a 27-year-old. I tell people I am unique in that I managed to turn what is normally considered a great accomplishment into a major failure.
My question is, how can I motivate myself to get out of this self-destructive cycle? One of the older replies above said something interesting to the effect of “what’s scarier than change is ending life without reaching you dream”. That’s probably where I fit in all this. I know I can formulate and accomplish a dream because I’m not stupid. The Ph.D. sort of proved that, so I suppose the degree had some value, only most people don’t need to get a Ph.D. to know they’re capable of doing something that is part of normal life, i.e. looking after what is important to one’s self in order to live a happier life. I know how to learn and see how connections that lead eventually to a solution or realization. My problem is, I keep asking myself “Why bother? You have already squandered the best years of life (in terms of the physical) Now you’ll reach your dream but have to contend with aging and all the unfortunate stuff that comes with it.” I know that there was some value in my life prior to the age of 58, however, I feel like I have just been born, only unlike a newborn, I’m already a 58-year-old adult who has about 25 years to play with. You might say that is a lot of years to play with, but in reality only 10 of those years can be conservatively called quality-years. I will throw this last element into the equation: I have a chronic medical condition which could begin manifesting itself within the next 10 to 15 years. Any advice on this will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
It’s a cute sentiment, but so much more challenging with Chronic Illness and Chronic Pain and incurable autoimmune diseases. There are some things I can never be again, as thanks to degenerative diseases without a cure. It is too late for many things I hoped to accomplish. Every day is a struggle, just to do little things like showering, errands, chores, work (part-time, not health enough for full time). It can be too late.

It’s Never Too Late (No Regrets) Motivational Video
Many people fail to go after what they want in life because they think their best days are behind them. It’s NEVER TOO LATE to create your best ever life. No matter what age you are, no matter how many past failures, it is NEVER TOO LATE. It’s NEVER TOO LATE because SUCCESS is all in the mind. You can define success however you like, so as long as you have the ability to control your mind you have the ability to create your best ever life.

Transcript – It’s Never Too Late (No Regrets) Motivational Video | Fearless Motivation
There is no greater pain than that of regret. Nothing can kill your soul more than the feeling of regret.
Never be afraid to take a risk in life. Never be afraid to take a risk going after what YOU really want.
You may fail, you will most likely fail often. But failure going after your dreams is NOTHING compared to the failure that is settling for a life you don’t want.
It’s never too late to try again! It’s never to late to DECIDE you want more out of life. It’s NEVER TOO LATE!
It’s never too late to commit to make this day, THIS VERY DAY, the BEST of your life! To create opportunities for yourself. To be positive. To RISE above average thoughts.
It’s NEVER TOO LATE to re invent yourself. To learn something new. To grow. To feel good again.
No matter what has happened or failed to happen in your past: IT IS NEVER TOO LATE. But only if you are committed. Only if YOU want to change. Do you want to change? Do you want more out of life?
You wouldn’t be the first person on earth to turn everything around. It is NOT impossible. All it takes is your commitment, your COURAGE and your DESIRE to be better.
Most people don’t change because they lack courage. Because they FEAR the unknown. They FEAR failure. YOU are different. YOU have the courage. The courage to try.
Don’t fear failure. FEAR being in the exactly same place next year as you are today.
Nobody is going to make your dream a REALITY! That’s up to YOU. That’s why you can’t GIVE UP. This is YOUR dream! And you are capable! You are more than capable! NEVER SETTLE. NEVER SETTLE for less than you’re worth! If you are suffering . If you are fighting through pain, through adversity, WHATEVER YOU ARE GOING THROUGH: DO NOT GIVE UP! It will get better! After the rain comes the rainbow. After the storm the sun will shine. Even on the cloudiest days. Your sun is still shining. Just wait for those clouds to pass. Tomorrow is a new day, a better day.
It’s time! Today is the day! The first day of the rest of your life!
Make that commitment. Show me your courage! Be fearless!
NEVER GIVE UP. Can you hear me? I don’t care if you’re living in your car. I don’t care if you’re sleeping on the side of a gas station. NEVER GIVE UP!
You gotta KEEP FIGHTING. Because if you stop, nobody’s gonna pick you up. Those cars are going to continue to roll past you. But you KEEP WALKING!
It’s that destination that you have in your SOUL. It’s where you want to make it. See, your tears, will become the ocean, that leads to your paradise.
I don’t care if you’re a woman. I don’t care if you’re a man. I don’t care if you’re a child: The toughest battles come to the toughest warriors.
You gotta see it, like it’s already in your hand. You gotta walk, like you’re already a star. Even, if you have nothing in your pocket.
That PRIDE. That PURPOSE. That GIFT. Will give you the ability to walk into the room, full of millionaires, and they ALL will want to know you.
But you can NEVER GIVE UP You can never stop fighting for that TOP SPOT.
See, you’ve got to become rich on the inside, before you can become rich on the outside. YOU NEED THIS. So WHEN you get to the TOP, you know how it feels to be at the BOTTOM. You know how it feels to give another person a shot.
NEVER GIVE UP!
MAKE GOOD CHOICES TODAY so you have NO REGRETS tomorrow! BE BRAVE TODAY so you have NO REGRETS tomorrow! LIVE FULLY TODAY so you have NO REGRETS tomorrow NO MORE REGRETS! NO TURNING BACK ! I’M ALL IN! ALL IN FOR MY GOALS! ALL IN FOR MY DREAMS!

It’s Never Too Late To Start Over
It’s never too late to start over. To hit the pause button. Breathe. Then begin again.
You don’t need to lose yourself in the shuffle, get caught up in your mistakes and your fears and your anxieties. You don’t have to hold onto your anger or your sadness and carry it with you in a little jar. You are more than a little jar, waiting to be filled by unsatisfying things—material things, superficial love, addictions and vices and so many other negatives that leave you feeling emptier than before. You are more than that little jar you feel defines the person you are, so much so that you try to fit yourself in its glass walls, try to keep contained within the edges and not overflow.
Life is imperfect. It’s beautiful and complicated and burdensome and messy. And you are a part of it, a part that grows and changes and laughs and loves and gets broken and comes back together. But there will never be a time when you can’t just step back and start all over.
There is no rewind, but you can always restart, let go. Let go of the toxic friends, of the urge to gossip, of the anxieties over what he said and she said, of the worry you feel over a future you cannot control. Let go. It’s never too late to put down that jar you’re carrying and pull yourself out of it. Grab your legs and arms and brain and heart and soul and reconstruct them back into the self you’re supposed to be. Reshape. Remold. Reconnect. And begin again.
You are not supposed to be this static person, this person you’ve always been and always will be. The world is continually shifting, and you are continually moving within it, in whatever direction you want. If you don’t like that direction, turn. Don’t turn back. Don’t turn around. Just turn. Right. Left. Diagonal. Cut across the grass. Take a back road.
It’s never too late to spin things around for the better. To leave what’s been broken and acknowledge that you can’t put it back together exactly how it was. To smile at the things you cannot replace, cannot fix, cannot make perfect. Nothing is perfect. You are not perfect. So don’t drag around that little jar, the transparent jar of your imperfections for the world to see, for you to see as a constant reminder of the ways you’ve failed. Forget the jar. Forget how you’ve always been defined by it and define yourself by something new. Throw it down. Shatter it. Watch it fall and break and crush into a thousand tiny pieces and celebrate that change hurts, and that growth sucks. But now you are free falling, and it is terrifying, but terribly freeing.

English Essay, Paragraph, Speech on “It is Never Too Late to Begin Once Again” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.
It is never too late to begin once again.
To err is human. We often slip-up and make mistakes. All of us have our moments of weakness. We commit errors or careless acts which we live to regret later
More than the adults such acts are more common, especially in young boys and girls. They drift aimlessly without giving a thought to the future. It is during this period that they pick up bad habits. These habits could be anything from smoking to bunking classes or even eve-teasing. Such is the age that they do not realize their mistakes. Attempts by elders to correct them are taken as insults by them.
However, most of them realize their mistakes after some time. They understand that what they have been doing till now was wastage of time, energy and money. They become wiser and mend their ways. They correct themselves and begin in earnest to reform themselves. This they begin by giving up bad company and bad habits. They start paying more attention to their future and their profession. Until and unless they do not commit any serious offense the society is always willing to give them a second chance.
This has happened to most of us. Those who have come back from the path of sin and self-pleasure very early in their lives are today much wiser and sensitive and better human beings. While those who have realized their mistakes late in their lives have much to regret. They are the ones who have in their pursuit of pleasure just lost find sincere friendship and relationships. These people can once again try to restart their lives. However, it will remain doubtful that they may become happy and useful citizens. Lesson of the Day: Inspiration From The Times’s ‘It’s Never Too Late’ Series
In this lesson, students will read about people who pursued dreams later in life. Then, they will interview someone with a similar story, or make a plan to pursue a dream of their own.
By Jeremy Engle
Lesson Overview
Featured Series: “It’s Never Too Late”
Many of us dream of trying something new, but then somehow fail to get around to it. A new Times series, “It’s Never Too Late,” tells the inspiring stories of people who have decided to switch gears, change their lives and pursue their dreams.
Whether it’s playing the cello , climbing a mountain , learning to ride horseback or recording your first album, these stories are a reminder that you never know what the future holds — but you do have the power to shape it. As Vijaya Srivastava, who learned to swim at 68, put it: “Finally I decided if I don’t try, it’s never going to happen.”
In this lesson, you will learn about people who prove that you can always change your life. In a Going Further activity, you will use some of the Times’s articles as mentor texts to create your own portrait of an older person who tried something new later in their lives. Or, you can make a plan to pursue a dream of your own!
Consider the two sayings:
“You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”
“It's never too late to be what you might have been.”
Which of these sayings do you find more accurate, more true to life?
Turn to a partner and share your thoughts. Then, discuss one or more of the following questions:
Are there certain things that are easier or harder to learn, depending on your age?
Is there anything that, in your relatively young life, you already feel it’s too late to try?
Are there any goals you have that might be better to pursue when you are older?
Article Choices:
Choose one of the articles in the “It’s Never Too Late” series to read in its entirety:
It’s Never Too Late to Fall in Love For Phyllis Raphael, 86, a chance meeting on the street turned into a get-together. Then came a date. A second and third followed. So did a love affair.
It’s Never Too Late to Record Your First Album For a celebrated architecture professor at the University of California, Berkeley, an album of 11 original songs, in a variety of genres, was eight decades in the making.
It’s Never Too Late to Follow Your Spiritual Calling After coming out as a transgender woman more than two years ago, Vica Steel never dreamed of forging a path to church leadership. Until now.
It’s Never Too Late to Climb That Mountain Dierdre Wolownick, whose son, Alex Honnold, is one of the world’s top rock climbers, ascended Yosemite’s El Capitan to celebrate her 70th birthday.
It’s Never Too Late to Publish a Debut Book and Score a Netflix Deal Jocelyn Nicole Johnson, at 50, is not the average age of a debut author. But the public school teacher describes herself as a “literary debutante” with the October publication of “My Monticello.”
Questions for Writing and Discussion

The Greatest Speeches of All Time, and What Biden Said
The oratory was warmed-over, but the substance was right.

I f you want to reach the kids , you’ve got to go where the kids are. Where are they right now? With their devices, of course. And what are they doing on those devices? Listening to podcasts, of course. This, presumably, was the reason behind the release of a corker: NATO Through Time , in which a grandfatherly former NATO official and three young and extremely well-informed co-hosts plunge into the past.
What’s next, Yalta: The Musical ? It would probably be a more successful venture, because Yalta was once; NATO is forever. From age to age, a new generation of supporters must be rallied, and that is becoming the 13th labor of Hercules. If the thudding disappointment of Unfrosted taught us anything, it’s that young people hate Boomer nostalgia. And NATO is the rotary phone of geopolitical alliances.
I grew up a long time ago, when the world was every bit as complicated and dangerous as it is today. But, if only as a reassuring fiction, the American president was often referred to as “the leader of the free world.” America was the most powerful country in history, and it was sworn to protect—and was protected by, should the terrible day come—an alliance of other free nations.
NATO was principally a firebreak against the Soviet Union and remains one against Russia. But Barack Obama felt that a foreign policy in which Russia was our chief enemy was a little old-fashioned. Too From Russia With Love . Too Rocky IV and Rambo III . In a presidential debate in 2012, he mocked Mitt Romney for saying that Russia was the biggest threat to America: “The 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because, you know, the Cold War’s been over for 20 years.” Then the Cold War rose from the dead and Russia invaded Crimea, and two years ago began its bloodthirsty attack on Ukraine.
Two people who don’t like NATO are Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump (who once told his foreign-policy adviser, “ I don’t give a shit about NATO ”). This ought to ring a distant alarm bell. Managing the very special relationship between these two powerful men seems to be Trump’s version of NATO: cheaper, more direct, perhaps one day turning into an alliance of its own.
Around the world, autocracy is rising; spend any time at all reading about the evidence, and your hair catches on fire. Russia, China, North Korea—they have all been strengthening their ties to one another; all of them have a dim view of America and of democracy.
Toward self-preservation, allow me to offer my own extremely brief assessment of NATO through time, in the form of three speeches by American presidents.
N o one really knows what John F. Kennedy actually said in his famous 1961 inaugural address , because he was so goddamn sexy and so goddamn confident that the beautiful words and soaring phrases float through your receptive brain but can find no purchase. But by looping the video for a week, this is what I’ve got:
Kennedy believed that the Second World War—which had ended just 15 years earlier—was a turning point in American history. The war had revealed the extent of America’s commitment to freedom and its special role as the defender of nations where tyrants ruled. The speech recognized that the dropping of atomic bombs in Japan had forever changed the equation of human progress: “The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life.” America had nuclear weapons, but so did its greatest enemy.
Embedded within the beautiful speech was the rationale for a lot of very questionable foreign policy. But the speech was also a flex and a warning: “To those old allies whose cultural and spiritual origins we share, we pledge the loyalty of faithful friends. United, there is little we cannot do in a host of cooperative ventures. Divided, there is little we can do—for we dare not meet a powerful challenge at odds and split asunder.”
In his beautiful words, he was talking about the rotary phone—NATO. And the desperate need to keep the peace: “To those nations who would make themselves our adversary, we offer not a pledge but a request: that both sides begin anew the quest for peace, before the dark powers of destruction unleashed by science engulf all humanity in planned or accidental self-destruction. We dare not tempt them with weakness. For only when our arms are sufficient beyond doubt can we be certain beyond doubt that they will never be employed.”
R onald Reagan presided over the Soviet Union’s demise. He also popularized that oxymoronic piece of realpolitik “Trust but verify.”
In 1984, he gave a speech marking the 40th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy. Peggy Noonan wrote it, and it took its place among the greatest American political speeches of all time. No one could sell a speech like Reagan, and this one opened like a novel, or better yet, a screenplay:
ESTABLISHING SHOT : “We stand on a lonely, windswept point on the northern shore of France.” DISSOLVE : “The air is soft, but 40 years ago at this moment, the air was dense with smoke and the cries of men, and the air was filled with the crack of rifle fire and the roar of cannon.”
The genius of the speech was that, while it described dramatic action that took place in the context of extremely complicated political history, it left that history as assumed fact and centered on the individual and collective actions of very young American men, some of them boys, who had more or less been dumped out of landing craft into waist-high waves, and were immediately under German machine-gun fire.
Some survivors of that pitiless day sat in the front rows of the audience, and Reagan addressed them directly: “You all knew that some things are worth dying for. One’s country is worth dying for, and democracy is worth dying for, because it’s the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man.”
I doubt if any of the terrified young men bleeding and dying on that beach thought of themselves as morally bound to defend democracy. But Reagan followed an established tradition of recognizing the highest aspirations of American troops in combat and of finding within the individual acts of one soldier the aims and honor of a just war.
In one of the speech’s most arresting passages, Reagan tied the horrors of combat back to the suffering of parents and families. “The Americans who fought here that morning knew word of the invasion was spreading through the darkness back home. They thought—or felt in their hearts, though they couldn’t know in fact—that in Georgia they were filling the churches at 4 a.m., in Kansas they were kneeling on their porches and praying, and in Philadelphia they were ringing the Liberty Bell.”
I don’t think any other politician of the past 50 years could have sold that line about the Liberty Bell, but when Reagan said it, you were pierced by it.
Young Americans then had comparatively little experience with the Second World War as an exercise of American greatness. They’d been ground down by Vietnam, and by all the music and movies about it, and by the homeless vets who sat in wheelchairs panhandling and drinking. Vietnam had brought shame to America—but the Second World War was different. This speech gave them a chance to reconsider America in a new light, as the hero of a global catastrophe. This was before Tom Brokaw’s The Greatest Generation and Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan, and Spielberg and Tom Hanks’s Band of Brothers . In fact, those lionizing, mythmaking inventions probably would not have existed without Reagan’s speech.
The tone was Shakespearian, Prince Hal into Henry V: “These are the boys of Pointe du Hoc. These are the men who took the cliffs. These are the champions who helped free a continent. These are the heroes who helped end a war.”
But the real heart of the speech was here, in the emphasis on the ways that the Allied powers had worked together to achieve this joint victory: “All of these men were part of a roll call of honor with names that spoke of a pride as bright as the colors they bore: the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, Poland’s 24th Lancers, the Royal Scots Fusiliers, the Screaming Eagles, the Yeomen of England’s armored divisions, the forces of Free France, the Coast Guard’s ‘Matchbox Fleet,’ and you, the American Rangers.”
And then he said this, possibly the point of the whole thing—his endorsement of the idea that the “strength of America’s allies is vital to the United States”: “We were with you then; we are with you now. Your hopes are our hopes, and your destiny is our destiny.”
W hen I read that Joe Biden was giving his own speech in Normandy this month, I think I actually said, “O almighty God, forbid it.” I knew it would feature our ever-diminishing president delivering a warmed-over version of Reagan’s great speech.
It was that. But, in its unspectacular way, it was also a speech that drew the sharpest possible contrast between Biden and Donald Trump, and what Trump imagines is his ability to cajole and bully our enemies, to find common cause with them and to stage dramas in which he emerges as a global ambassador of peace through strength. During his administration, Trump threatened North Korea with nuclear attack (sweet Jesus!). But he softened after Kim Jong Un “ wrote me beautiful letters .” The kind of foreign policy that involves, say, sending aid to Ukraine to beat back Russian soldiers seems far less interesting to him.
Biden said this: “When we talk about American democracy, we often talk about the ideals of life, liberty, pursuit of happiness. What we don’t talk about is how hard it is.” He said the “most natural instinct is to walk away, to be selfish, to force our will upon others, to seize power.”
“American democracy asks the hardest of things: to believe that we’re part of something bigger than ourselves.”
Y ou would think that freedom is the force that flows naturally, but it’s not. Freedom generally has to be fought for and always must be vigilantly—and sometimes militarily—guarded.
There’s no point listing Joe Biden’s manifold shortcomings here. They’re in front of our eyes, and they’re not all “ cheap fakes .” But Biden believes in NATO and in supporting our allies. Maybe that seems quaint, and rotary-phone-as-hell, but these are very good things.
Trump is flashier: a convicted felon, an insult comic, the last man on Earth to run on a platform of “Trust me,” and yet it’s working on a huge number of Americans.
If you vote for Biden, you’ll have to ask yourself a question: Is he still fit for office, or is he too frail, too ancient-seeming to make another term anything but a mockery of the country?
And if you vote for Trump, you’ll have to ask yourself this one: Do you feel lucky?
