NDTV brings the third edition of Issi Ka Naam Zindagi (earlier called Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai on Zee hosted by Farooque Shaikh) with Raveena Tandon doing the honours. The opening episode had the current flavour of the season, Vidya Balan giggling incessantly as Raveena called her family,friends and colleagues to wax eloquent about her. Next up was Irrfan ,who for some reason looked very uncomfortable. Of course,we were told by his wife and female co-stars how shy he is. Guests walked on to the stage talking about Irrfan’s early days while directors and friends praised him effusively. Nothing wrong with that except both the episodes had something crucial missing.

Calling one guest after another who hardly get a minute to talk about the star just makes the stage more crowded. Quantity scores over quality as the guests keep appearing on the show without revealing anything interesting about the star. Like we all know by now,how Vidya was panned for her dress sense before she struck gold with Sabyasachi’s saris or Irrfan’s ‘cerebral’ films.

Irrfan’s episode was particularly disappointing as some crucial elements were left out. For instance,we wanted to hear more from his wife and his two sons who were sadly relegated to a far corner on the sofa! We wanted to know more about his mother who in a touching AV complained of how her “beta” has gone far off from their family,we wanted to know more from Mira Nair on why she thinks Irrfan hasn’t got his due in the Hindi film industry or even from Irrfan on whether he feels shortchanged or disillusioned in the industry which feeds itself on star sons and obscene box office figures. We would have loved to see a Tabu talking about her Maqbool and The Namsesake co-star or Irrfan telling us if things had soured between the two. And pray,what was a film critic doing on that stage making a tall statement like ‘He has a long way to go…he is set for the international stage’…We mean,what was he expected to say?

Last but not the least,Raveena Tandon apart from her sparkling presence,doesn’t bring anything to the table. For instance,when Farooque Shaikh hosted the show,though he hadn’t worked with most of the stars who appeared on it,he still had viewers believe he knew more about them,or a little secret only he was privy to,whereas Raveena just rattles off bits (when she is not adjusting her hair) her research team has given her. The insider ‘view’ is seriously missing and what could have been an all rounded view about the star ends up skimming just the surface.

Verdict: Nothing exceptional. If you have nothing else to do,you can just about pass time.

Watch It's My Life

It's My Life is a Bollywood romantic comedy film that revolves around the life of Aryan Kapoor (Harman Baweja), a young ambitious man who dreams of making it big in the business world. Despite having a passion for acting, his father, Yogesh (Nana Patekar), a successful businessman, wants him to follow in his footsteps and take over the family business.

Aryan is torn between his love for the arts and his father's expectations. He eventually decides to pursue his passion for acting, much to his father's dismay. However, Aryan's decision to leave the family business causes a rift between him and his father, and he is disowned by his family.

Aryan struggles to make it as an actor, but with the help of his girlfriend, Jenny (Genelia), he manages to land a role in a film. Aryan's career takes off, and he becomes a successful actor. However, Yogesh is still not proud of his son's achievements and continues to disapprove of his career choice.

As Aryan's success grows, he is faced with even bigger challenges. He must prove himself to his family, his critics, and the industry. He must also confront his past and make amends with his father if he wants to find true happiness.

Along the way, Aryan meets a host of colorful characters, including Jenny's father, Mr. Bhalla (Sanjay Kapoor), who disapproves of their relationship, and a struggling actor, Tony (Kapil Sharma), who becomes Aryan's friend and mentor.

Known for their relatable, comical yet poignant style of storytelling, the two powerhouses of talent, Boney Kapoor, producer of wholesome entertainers like ‘Mr. India’, ‘Judaai’, ‘Wanted’ and ‘Mom’ and Director Anees Bazmee, known for super hit films like ‘Singh is Kinng’ and ‘Welcome Back’, have time and again given some of the most enjoyable on-screen experiences.

And, having delivered the blockbuster movie ‘No Entry’ together, the duo is all set to mesmerize the viewers yet again with this light-hearted film. Kapil Sharma's debut film It's My Life to finally release after 13 years - watch trailer

Kapil Sharma's debut film starring Nana Patekar, Harman Baweja and Genelia D'Souza is all set to finally release on November 29. The movie is backed by Sanjay Kapoor, Boney Kapoor & is helmed by Anees Bazmee.

Anees Bazmee's directorial from 2007  It's My Life is finally getting a release. Backed by Boney Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor, It's My Life  was completed 13 years back but failed to score a release. 

The movie stars Nana Patekar, Harman Baweja and Genelia D'Souza. Interestingly, both Harman and Genelia have not been seen acting in the lead roles for years now. Genelia was last seen as the main lead in Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya,  which released 8 years ago in 2012. On the other hand, Harman Baweja was last seen in 2014 film Dishkiyaoon. 

However, the most interesting aspect about It's My Life is that it also marked the big screen debut of ace comedian Kapil Sharma. After Kapil had won the second season of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge,  he was selected to play a pivotal supporting role in the film. 

As per the reports, Kapil Sharma will be seen playing the character of Nana Patekar's servant in the film. While Kapil has primarily not been featured in the trailer, fans can still spot him in the background at 00:54 seconds time stamp. 

It's My Life is a Hindi remake of 2006 Telugu hit  Bommarillu.  The original starred Siddharth, Genelia D'Souza and Prakash Raj in lead roles.

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan Movie Review: A formulaic Bollywood flop made on a massive budget of Rs 350 crore

Bade miyan chote miyan review: bade miyan chote miyan is a prime example of everything that’s wrong with bollywood cinema – lazy writing, recycled plots, and a complete lack of originality. save yourself the agony and give this one a hard pass..

Let me give you five words that will summarise the entire film – Indian Army, Court Martial, India – Pakistan , Revenge, Victory. Yes, that’s the plot of Bade Miyan Chote Miyan with an introduction to AI – Cause why not – that’s what everyone is talking about. As I started writing this review, I wondered why I even watched the film. The 2 hours 38 minutes long film is nothing but predictable. The director Ali Abbas Zafar and the writers have tried their best to add comedy to a film that should have been serious. Did it work? Well, not for me.

Spoiler Alert!!!

Let me begin by mentioning what worked for me in the film since it won’t take much time – Ronit Roy’s performance is something that stood out for me. He played Colonel Adil Shekhar Azad in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. He can get into the skin of the characters he portrays. The lead antagonist Kabir, played by Prithviraj Sukumaran deserves a special mention. He tried his best to make the badly written character look relatable and real. The title track will make you groove – Why not – We’ve loved the original one. And that’s it.

The film opens with an introduction of a ‘Yantra’ (A package) that can save India from any attacks by Pakistan or China – only to know that this object in question is none other than Sonakshi Sinha. You read that right! The initial 20 minutes are dedicated to establishing why Firoz ( Akshay Kumar ) and Rakesh (Tiger Shroff) are called Bade Miyan and Chote Miyan.

At one point in the film, you will feel as if you are watching low-budget Wakanda. I understand, that taking inspiration is fine but not doing justice to it can’t be accepted. The makers have used AI as the core of the film. Half the film is a flashback trying to show what led to things that are happening.

The dialogues are cliché – Terrorism Mein Bhi Nepotism, PubG nahi Fauji Khelo… etc. The addition of comic elements and dialogues was not necessary at all. Honestly, if I hear one more “buddy cop” banter that feels like it’s been plucked straight out of a bargain bin of 80s action film, I might just lose my mind. The exchanges between Akshay and Tiger were predictable, lacking any semblance of originality or wit. It’s as if the writers took a checklist of every Army movie cliché and ticked them off one by one.

And don’t even get me started on the plot. From the moment the opening credits rolled, I could predict every twist and turn with painful accuracy. The story is so formulaic that it’s practically on autopilot, dragging the audience through a series of tired tropes and predictable scenarios. There’s nothing fresh or innovative here – just a regurgitation of plot points we’ve seen a hundred times before.

To make matters worse, the film’s runtime feels like an eternity. Scenes are stretched to the breaking point, with unnecessary filler padding out an already thin plot. It’s as if the filmmakers were trying to compensate for the lack of substance with sheer volume, resulting in a bloated, tedious slog of a movie.

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan is a prime example of everything that’s wrong with Bollywood cinema – lazy writing, recycled plots, and a complete lack of originality. Save yourself the agony and give this one a hard pass.

Documentaries about cultural hotspots are as common as the film festivals that play them. Seems if an establishment sticks around long enough, especially in a city like New York, a filmmaker will want to make a movie about its longevity. In a sense, it’s easy storytelling: If a restaurant has been around for decades, some worthwhile stories are almost certainly embedded in its history. However, every once in a while, a film like this shifts into something else. This clearly happened when it came time to chronicle the staying power of Veselka, a NYC-based Ukrainian restaurant that has seen Big Apple leaders come and go (Erik Adams and Kathy Hochul are both featured in this one) but is now facing a new crisis. 

Over the course of filming the deeply compassionate “Veselka: The Rainbow on the Corner at the Center of the World,” the War in Ukraine broke out, giving the piece a different kind of scope and emotional power. Like the title that goes on a bit longer than it needs to, the filmmakers here have a habit of underlining and emphasizing elements of their story that would have been more powerful without a more subtle approach. But this is still a remarkably moving piece of work, a documentary that understands that a diner can’t save your life, but that doesn’t make it any less essential to it.

“Veselka” feels like a pretty straightforward historical doc at first, detailing the lineage behind the East Village staple. Like a lot of films like this, Michael Fiore ’s direction could almost serve as a tourism bureau piece to get people to come to NYC. Let’s just say if I was less than a hundred miles away from Veselka, I would be eating dinner there tonight. It just seems like a lovely, warm, inviting place. It will make you want a pierogi. (Borscht might be a tougher sell.)

Fiore starts with Jason Birchard , the founder's grandson, and unpacks the history of the establishment’s deep Ukrainian roots. Then, the war starts. Fiore smartly captures the notion that people often have to work through trauma, even if it's happening on the other side of the world. We hear from one cook who talks about people he’s lost in the early days of the war. Still, he has to get up and go to work. War impacts people around the world who can’t stop to manage their trauma or even consider what they may be losing.

This is exemplified most in the film's back half, which focuses on the story of Vitalii. A manager at Veselka, he’s trying to get his mother out of Ukraine to Poland and participating in outreach/charity programs while he does so. The filmmakers capture how these efforts, while valuable, can be a bit transitory. They feel good at the moment, and they certainly raise important awareness, but they don’t get Vitalii’s mom across the border. A charity baseball game serves as a nice distraction, but it doesn’t replace the fear and the displacement. 

The wisest line in the film comes late: “There are more questions than answers in this story.” The film works because it allows for these questions, never over-playing Veselka as a solution or a cure. I was impressed at how rarely the film succumbs to the melodrama that would have plagued lesser works. It never feels like the filmmakers are trying to wring tears from their subjects or audience, even though both will come.

Having said that, David Duchovny's narration is a tragic mistake. As much as this “X-Files” fan loves hearing Fox Mulder’s voice, and can sense the compassion in his delivery, none of it feels necessary. He has a habit of repeating the emotion we’re already feeling. We don’t need to hear it. We can see it in Vitalii’s eyes.

“Veselka: The Rainbow on the Corner at the Center of the World” has played across the country the last few weeks and opens at Hot Docs this week. Watch it for inevitably on VOD.
