Writing a CIPD Level 5 project may be a pleasant and demanding experience for both HR professionals and students. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Level 5 qualification is intended to help individuals advance their knowledge of HR and L&D. It is critical to grasp how to produce good assignments in order to succeed in this program. We will walk you through the process of creating a CIPD Level 5 assignment in this blog article, including examples and recommendations to help you succeed.

Recognizing the Assignment Brief

It is critical that you properly comprehend the assignment brief before beginning to write your assignment. Identifying the important needs, such as word count, submission standards, and assessment criteria, is part of this. Consider the following assignment brief:

“Analyse the impact of employee engagement strategies on organizational performance in a case study company of your choosing.” Discuss the relevant theories and make suggestions for improvement. Your task should not be longer than 2,500 words.”

In this case, you must guarantee that your assignment is no more than 2,500 words long, that it focuses on employee engagement techniques and organizational success, and that it incorporates relevant ideas and recommendations.

Information Gathering and Research

Gather pertinent information and study materials next. This could contain academic articles, textbooks, industry reports, and case studies for a Level 5 assignment. Make certain that the sources you utilize are reliable and up-to-date. Here’s an example of how you could organize your research:

Review Academic Literature on Employee Engagement

Begin by studying academic literature on employee engagement and its impact on organizational performance. Cite applicable ideas and models, for example, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs or Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory.

Choose a real-world company to serve as your case study. Collect information on their employee engagement strategies, such as surveys, policies, or success stories.

Interviews or Surveys

If possible, conduct interviews or surveys to collect primary data about the employee engagement activities of the case study company.

Organizing Your Assignment

A well-organized assignment is easy to read and evaluate. Consider the framework below for your CIPD Level 5 assignment:

Introduction (About 10% of Total Word Count)

Introduce the topic briefly and clarify the goal of the task.

Give a summary of the case study company and its significance.

Review of Literature (About 30% of Total Word Count)

Discuss pertinent theories and models concerning employee engagement and its impact.

Examine major discoveries from scholarly sources.

Methodology (About 10% of Total Word Count)

Describe your research methodologies, such as data gathering and analysis.

Justify your case study and research tools selection.

Case Study Analysis (About 30% of the Total Word Count)

Give a thorough examination of the case study company’s employee engagement practices.

Highlight their strengths and limitations in reference to the evaluated literature.

Recommendations (About 15% of the Total Word Count)

Provide ideas for the case study company to improve their employee engagement initiatives based on your investigation.

  • Make sure your suggestions are practical and actionable.
  • Conclusion (about 5% of total word count):
  • Summarise the most important aspects of your assignment.
  • Highlight the importance of your results and recommendations.

Use the appropriate referencing style (e.g., Harvard, APA, or Chicago) to cite all sources. Some tips that will help you;

Learn the Citation Style: Become acquainted with the citation style required by your discipline or institution. APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, and other styles are common. Get a style guide or use internet resources to learn about the rules and conventions of your preferred style.

Citation Management Software: Use citation management software such as EndNote, Zotero, Mendeley, or RefWorks. These tools let you automatically organize and cite your references, saving you time and eliminating errors.

Regular Practice

The more you practice referring, the better you’ll get. To hone your skills, create sample references and citations. It is advisable to practice with authentic materials such as articles, books, and websites.

When in doubt, consult style guidelines or instructions pertaining to your preferred citation style. These manuals contain detailed instructions on how to format references, in-text citations, and other aspects.

Use Online Reference Generators: Online reference generators can assist you in swiftly creating properly styled citations. Citation generators, such as Citation Machine and BibMe, can generate citations depending on the information you provide.

Check Your References: Before submitting your work, double-check your references to confirm they are correct. Author names, publication dates, page numbers, and URLs should all be double-checked. Errors can result in misunderstandings or lower grades.

Cite as You Write: Don’t wait until the end of your paper to add all of your sources. In order to keep your writing flowing, provide in-text citations as you write. This also aids in keeping track of your sources.

Examples to Consider

Some of the examples that I came across while working with CIPD level 5 assignment help are as under;

“Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory suggests that both hygiene factors and motivators are critical for understanding employee satisfaction and performance (Herzberg, 1959).”

“According to a Gallup report, organizations with highly engaged employees experience 21% higher profitability (Gallup, 2020).”

“We conducted semi-structured interviews with 10 employees at XYZ Company to gain insights into their perceptions of the company’s engagement initiatives.”

“Based on our analysis, XYZ Company should consider implementing regular feedback mechanisms, such as quarterly surveys, to ensure ongoing employee engagement.”

“CIPD Report (2023) showed that you get the best input from the employees when they are adequately rewarded in a transparent way”.

A CIPD Level 5 assignment needs careful planning, extensive research, and excellent organization. You may design an engaging assignment that showcases your HR and L&D knowledge by comprehending the assignment brief, completing rigorous research, and adhering to a defined framework. Remember that real-world examples, case studies, and current research can help you create an impressive CIPD Level 5 project. Best wishes for your studies!

The CIPD Advanced Diploma in Strategic People Management is designed for those with considerable HR experience or an HR degree who are ready to take on postgraduate-level study. It’ll prepare you for strategic senior HR roles and allow you to apply for CIPD Chartered Membership once you have the necessary professional experience.

Definitely! The CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management is designed to follow on from the CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate in People Practice so it's the perfect qualification to study if you're looking to build your HR career in a dedicated, systematic way. If you've already successfully completed the CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate, you'll be eligible to study the Level 5 Associate Diploma.

The Level 5 qualification builds on the foundation knowledge that you developed throughout the Level 3. Covering topics at a more advanced level than Level 3, the Level 5 will allow you to take your skills to the next level, enhance your existing skills and take the first steps towards specialising your HR practice based on your professional interests.

Pursing the CIPD Level 5 qualification after gaining the CIPD Level 3 is recommended if you want to develop your career and achieve more senior roles.

How does CIPD Level 5 differ from Level 3 in terms of content and complexity?

The CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management is a mid-level qualification aimed at professionals who are looking to develop their current career in Human Resources and advance to more senior HR positions. It's at the undergraduate level, in terms of difficulty.

It's ideal for HR professionals who have existing experience in human resources and people management, or for those who have successfully completed the CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate in People Practice. You'll need some prior work experience in the field to be eligible to study this course.

A Level 5 course, this qualification will hone your professional knowledge and take your skills to the next level. It's designed to challenge your expertise and equip you with the specialist, critical and strategic HR skills for you to be able to perform intermediate HR roles successfully.

The course is split into seven modules, six of which are core modules and one elective module which you'll choose yourself, based on your own professional interests:

In Talent Management and Workforce Planning , you'll explore how managing the workforce is vital to ensure long-term business success. In this module, you’ll look at contemporary labour market trends and understand their significance for workforce planning, including how organisations can position themselves in competitive labour markets.

You’ll also explore the techniques used to forecast supply and demand, study various approaches to succession and contingency planning and learn how to build diverse talent pools, manage contractual arrangements and onboarding, and develop and retain your organisation’s talent.

In Reward for Performance and Contribution , you’ll look at how to develop effective reward packages and how to gather and analyse data to support reward decisions. You’ll learn how internal and external business factors influence reward strategies and policies, the financial drivers of the organisation and the impact of reward costs.

In addition, you'll examine the principles of reward and its importance to workplace culture, performance management, and how policies and practices are implemented, and learn about the legislative requirements that impact reward, considering the role of HR in supporting managers to make fair, consistent and appropriate reward judgements.

Professional Behaviours and Valuing People will help you you evaluate what it means to be a people professional, how the role is evolving, and how you can apply personal and ethical values at work.

You’ll learn how to champion inclusive and collaborative strategies,  explore the human and business benefits of inclusive behaviours and the right to be fairly treated at work and evaluate solutions aimed at building positive working relationships.

Finally, you’ll assess your own strengths and weaknesses and formulate a Continuous Professional Development plan to guide your learning journey.

In Organisational Performance and Culture in Practice , you'll explore the connections between organisational structure and strategy and the wider world of work in a commercial context. Examining the factors and trends that impact business strategy and workforce planning, you'll look at the influence of culture as well as employee wellbeing and behaviour in delivering change and organisational performance and learn how to analyse and assess organisational priorities.

In Evidence-Based Practice , you'll develop an understanding of evidence-based practice and the tools and methods that you can use to diagnose workplace issues, challenges and opportunities.

You’ll also learn to evaluate the benefits, risks and financial implications of solutions aimed at improving people practice issues, as well as measure the impact and value people practice contributions make to organisations.

In Employment Relationship Management , you'll analyse the key approaches, practices and tools you can use to manage and enhance the employee relationship.

You’ll develop an understanding of practices aimed at supporting employees as well as review emerging trends and developments to inform approaches to employee engagement. You'll also examine collective employment law and employee representation, and gain practical skills in performance, disciplinary and grievance matters, acquiring the skills required for handling procedures effectively.

What is a CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma?

The CIPD Level 5 Diploma in People Management is an HR qualification developed by the highly respected Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). It’s roughly equivalent to an undergraduate degree.

It’s the right choice for you if you have some HR experience and are looking for the next big step in your career, or if you’ve already completed a CIPD Foundation qualification.

Every module of the course is aligned with the CIPD Profession Map, which sets the global standard for people professionals and outlines the exact skills you need at each stage of your HR career – so you can be sure everything you learn is relevant, up-to-date, and will help you make a real impact at work.

What are the benefits of a CIPD Level 5 HR qualification?

The CIPD Level 5 Diploma shows employers that you have the wide range of skills you need to stand out in mid-level roles such as HR Manager, HR Advisor, and HR Business Partner.

You’ll explore a broad range of HR models and practices across key areas such as recruitment, talent management, and employment law, and gain a better understanding of the external factors that can have an impact on HR activities and organisations. You’ll also personally develop your analytical and problem-solving skills.

Successfully completing the Associate Diploma leads to CIPD Associate Membership, and will allow you to continue on to the highest level of CIPD study, the Advanced Diploma.

Level 5 HR Diploma FAQs

Is the cipd level 5 associate programme right for me.

The CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management is right for you if:

  • You want to take the next step in your career in the people profession
  • You have some HR experience or a CIPD Level 3 qualification
  • You're currently in, or aiming for, a mid-level position like HR Manager or HR Business Partner
  • You want to add value to your organisation in a people practice role

The Associate Diploma is designed to give you the skills and knowledge you need to impress employers, take on managerial roles, deliver real results at work, and get ahead in your HR career.

What are the entry requirements for CIPD Level 5?

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but it's designed for people who have some experience of HR or a CIPD Level 3 qualification.

Aside from that, as long as you're 18+ and have good literacy and numeracy skills, you're good to go.

Do I need to be a CIPD member?

Yes, you should join CIPD as a Student Member before you submit your first assignment for your Level 5 Diploma. You need to be a member so CIPD can moderate your assignments, award your grades, and give you your qualification – so it’s pretty important!

We’ll explain how to join as a Student Member once you enrol. Bear in mind you’ll pay an annual Student Membership fee to CIPD too.

Learn more about CIPD Membership .

How long does it take to complete CIPD Level 5?

We find it takes most students around 9 to 11 months to complete the CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma. To give you plenty of flexibility, we offer a support period of 12 months.

However, everyone is different, so bear in mind this might change depending on your circumstances and how much time you have to study each week.

What are the differences in cost and time commitment between CIPD Level 3 and Level 5 courses?

While the CIPD Level 3 course is much shorter, consisting of only 4 units, the CIPD Level 5 course is much more extensive, requiring learners to study a total of 7 units, which include 3 core units, 3 specialist units and the learners’ choice of 1 option unit.

As a result, the two levels also differ in completion time from one another, with the CIPD Level 3 average completion time being 7 to 9 months, while the CIPD Level 5 completion time is 9 to 12 months.

The cost of the CIPD Level 5 Diploma is also more than the CIPD Level 3 Certificate, as the Level 5 course is a longer, more comprehensive qualification, and thus, costs more overall.

Does the CIPD Level 5 course provide exemptions for higher programmes, such as university degrees?

CIPD offers two different options which can be considered, exemptions and credit transfers.

Credit transfers occur in the event that a student wishes to switch study providers and has completed the same unit elsewhere. This would typically be handled by the training provider.

Alternatively, exemption takes place when a student has completed some units under the previous CIPD Legacy qualification and is looking to transition to the same unit of the new qualification, something that is also handled by the training provider. However, this depends on which unit the student is looking to transition.

Also, exemption occurs when a student has previously completed a relevant degree, such as an undergraduate, Masters or MBA degree; in this case, they can apply for exemption. The degree must directly map the qualification you’re looking to study (an undergraduate degree is likely to map a CIPD Level 5 qualification, while a Masters or MBA would likely map a CIPD Level 7 qualification). This case is handled directly by the CIPD, who will conduct a mapping process, where students will be required to pay CIPD directly.

How much does a CIPD Level 5 Diploma cost?

At DPG, we pride ourselves on helping you get CIPD qualified without breaking the bank.

If you’re paying for your course yourself, you can spread the cost over up to 18 months , and you won’t pay any extra – all our payment plans are totally interest-free*.

If your employer is paying for your course (or if you’d like them to!), our advisors can help you put together a business case showing the benefits of studying CIPD.

How does CIPD Level 5 align with current industry trends and best practices in HR?

Yes! The CIPD Level 5 course in HR comprises 7 units in total, 3 of which are core units and 3 specialist units, which focus on providing learners with knowledge of the best practices in HR. However, it also offers the choice of 1 optional unit for students to choose from.

CIPD qualifications

Michaela did a fantastic job leading us through the day. It was my first live webinar, so before attending, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect.

Amazing day, I always come off workshop buzzing with new methods and theories to take back to my organisation. Today was so interactive and Lorraine was great!

The trainer was clear, knowledgeable and managed to include all participants in discussion

Again another great course. I was a little worried of having a full day after two shorter days for the first unit. However, Lorraine kept me fully engaged throughout. She has lots of positive energy and made everything seem super easy! By using real life examples I felt like it all helped cement the information.

Sue was very knowledgeable. Her style is calm, welcoming and warm. It’s been a pleasure to meet her!

Lorraine delivers the content in an engaging way using real life experiences to draw on examples

Lorraine Bartlett my advisor was excellent, she took time to go through the materials with me and always had time to answer my questions. Lorraine had a depth of expertise and shared this with me throughout my studies which helped better my understanding of the topics. Lorraine is a lovely person, and when I had some personal issues during the time of my study she was understanding and helped identify the best way forward that would not jeopardise my learning. I would recommend Lorraine and Reed Learning to anyone and have been really impressed with the training and mentorship throughout. A big thanks to Lorraine!

Start a new career in HR with a CIPD qualification

Acacia Placeholder

How to conduct research for your CIPD assignment?

For CIPD level 3, 5 and 7 use CIPD factsheets and core textbooks as a starting point. It is vital you purchase the recommended core text as these have been written to help with the content areas of the assessment itself.

Both the CIPD factsheets and the core textbooks will provide an overview of the key theories and importantly will signpost you to other valid and reliable sources (the CIPD factsheets have links within the text) and importantly will provide a list of references at the end. It is the links (within the factsheets) and the list of references at the end of the factsheets and textbooks which will enable you to provide a further exploration of the available sources.

Learners should also read the details for the CIPD unit/module, on the Acacia Student Hub, to familiarise themselves with the topic beforehand.

For CIPD Level 5 and particularly, CIPD Level 7

A number of these sources can then be found within respected search engines. On this point, avoid just typing in details of what you want to research within a general ‘Google’ search. Use respected ‘academic’ search engines. For example, Google does provide a search engine for ‘academic literature’, including journals known as  Google Scholar  with a useful  guide  on research tips and using citations.

Importantly, the CIPD provides  research  reports on their  Knowledge Hub , usually written by respected academics, professionals, and practitioners. For all level 5 and 7 learners, just like Google Scholar, the CIPD’s EBSCO: Business publications and  journals site  provides an extensive range of academic and professionals journals (more extensive than Google Scholar), for research which critically evaluates the theory in more depth (important at level 5, but vital at level 7). The CIPD provides lots of help on using this site and exploring further.

We discourage you from using Wikipedia as a source, after all this is an open site, where anyone can contribute. The contributions are anonymous so we don’t know the source, so how can we claim that the research is coming from valid and reliable sources if we don’t know these (the same can be said if we just find ‘random’ sites, with unknown named sources via Google). However, Wikipedia is good for background reading (along with other sources) on the subject. Also, of vital importance, Wikipedia does cite references within the text and provides details in their list of references at the end. Consider these citations and references (determining who wrote them) as a way of identifying further research sources.

On a final point, whilst, reports from professional consultancy organisations (i.e. KPMG, PwC, Deloitte, Accenture, Ernst & Young) do provide up to date research and valuable insights on the industry, you need to be aware that the reports may not have been written by independent named academics who have scrutinised the research in terms of the methods used and conclusions provided. Whilst, these reports can be used, make sure you analyse the results taking this into account and the fact that the research has been written by a commercial organisation, who may benefit commercially from the findings.

In terms of the above points, the CIPD Knowledge Hub (see link above) provides excellent guidance on conducting and scrutinising the research evidence. One report that is particularly useful is the CIPD’s excellent  In search of the best available evidence (2016) , which investigates why evidence-based practice is so important, the principles that underpin it, how it can be followed and how challenges in doing so can be overcome Outside of the CIPD core texts and sources the books by Stella Cottrell provide very useful help:

The Study Skills Handbook (Macmillan Study Skills) Paperback – 18 Mar. 2019  >

Critical Thinking Skills: Effective Analysis, Argument and Reflection (Macmillan Study Skills) Paperback – 17 Mar. 2017 >

Preparation: How do I prepare? How should I manage my time?

Applies to all CIPD levels. Download all the assessments right from the start and provide an initial scan over these, so you can start scoping, from the very start, what is involved for each unit. Some learners seem surprised at what is involved within the assessment when they attend their first session for the unit. Preparation beforehand will almost certainly take away the element of surprise (or unexpected shocks).

If you know the timetable for the units/modules, start putting the deadline dates in the diary. Remember these are deadline dates, you can submit beforehand. Try to put a completion date in your diary of when you intend to complete the assignment, maybe 3-5 days before the deadline date. This gives you time to read over the assessment and reflect on this. We find there is a strong correlation between people not passing an assessment if they submitted the assessment very close to the deadline date and time (with only minutes, sometimes seconds to spare).

Just before starting the new unit/module, read over the requirements thoroughly and then start identifying key chapters/texts that relate to the assessment criteria.

Once you have read over the assessment activity and criteria, start preparing a list of questions (of where you may be confused and/or want further clarification) in readiness for the sessions.

Start the assignment as soon as possible after the session. This is advisable, as information is fresh in your mind. Dedicate time in your diary to work progressively on the assessment (maybe an hour a day). This means you can go away and reflect on what you have written, and then revisit the assessment with a fresh perspective. Do not wait for the last minute for inspiration, it rarely happens, particularly when we are feeling stress and anxiety.

Structure: What format should I use for my assignment?

Applies to all levels: This will vary depending on the assessment activity. Make sure you read the requirements of the assessment activity/criteria carefully and importantly follow the guidance of the tutor. If in doubt, do not ‘suffer in silence’ or make ‘assumptions’ ask the tutor within the sessions, or email them as soon as possible, at least a week before the deadline date.

Referencing: How do I reference different sources?

Applies to all levels: In two words use Harvard Referencing. As well as help on the learning hub and the handbooks. Many of the universities have guides on Harvard referencing (written by academics). For example, a very useful interactive guide has been written by  Anglia University  along with a PDF summary guide. Google Scholar and the CIPD’s EBSCO site provides a ‘citation’ button/link to help with this. Also, there are numerous tools to help with referencing/citations including  Microsoft Word  and  Neil’s ToolBox .

Overall, outside of the CIPD core texts the books by Stella Cottrell provide very useful help:

CIPD Level 5 Diploma in People Management

Paused - focussing on Level 7 equivalent Masters Degree

Michael Bear

In 2022, I began a new milestone to formalise the knowledge and expertise I acquired in the field. With four years working as a Human Resources Professional (HRP), I have practicable generalist experience and a developed people skillset. This growth was chartered by my promotion from HR Assistant to HR Officer.

Following the remote learning model I sought in gaining my CIPD Level 3 Diploma in HR Practice (2016) with DPG, I have opted for a similar learning style for my CIPD Level 5 in People Management (2022). StaySharp, a remote learning platform, is where I have decided to continue my studies. The USP is that the learner controls the pace of progression.

I view CIPD qualifications as most relevant when you have specific experiences to draw upon. My CIPD Level 3 was intended to demonstrate my professional applicability to practice Human Resources. My CIPD Level 5 is intended to qualify my expertise in people management practices.

My CIPD Level 5 will consist of nine learning pathways.

MOD 1: Organisational Performance & Culture in Practice (CORE) 5 ,000-word answers

cipd level 5 diploma assignments

MOD 2: Evidence-Based Practice (CORE) 2 ,900-word report & 1,000-word review

MOD 3: Professional Behaviours & Valuing People (CORE) 2 ,100-word answers & 1,150-word summary

MOD 4: Employment Relationship Management (SPECIALIST)

MOD 5: Talent Management & Workforce Planning (SPECIALIST)

MOD 6: Reward for Performance & Contribution (SPECIALIST)

MOD 7: Diversity & Inclusion (OPTIONAL)

MOD 8: Specialist Employment Law (OPTIONAL)

MOD 9: Well-Being at Work (OPTIONAL)

The assessment criteria are intended to refine key learnings through application in a predetermined format.  I have created a study plan, assessment deadlines, and module crib sheets to meet these challenges.

According to the CIPD, this qualification is estimated to take 12-16 months to complete.  The goal is to achieve this by June 2023. Alongside my other projects, now is the optimum time to evidence how far my skills have grown.
