20. Why do desert snakes burrow deep into the sand during the day?

Ans: Desert snakes burrow deep into the sand during the day because Deserts are too hot during the daytime. And the soil deep inside is cooler than the soil on the top. Therefore, snakes burrow deep to rest in cooler soil and escape the scorching heat of the desert.

21. Write the adaptation in aquatic plants due to which

(a) Submerged leaves can bend in the flowing water. 

Ans: Submerged leaves can bend in the flowing water due to their special shape i.e. long narrow and ribbon-shaped. These changes in shape help to tolerate water currents without getting harmed. E.g. – tape grass.

(b) Leaves can float on the surface of the water.

26. Like many animals although a car also moves it is not considered a living organism. Give 2-3 reasons.

Ans: the car is not considered a living organism because it does not have the following properties:

(i) Not made up of cells- All living beings are composed of cells but the car is not made up of cells and thus is a non-living thing.

(ii) No Reproduction- All living beings undergo the process of reproduction but the car does not reproduce.

(iii) Lack of respiration- respiration is an essential process for the survival of the living being but the car does not undergo the process of respiration.

Thus, these points above cleared the fact that a car is a non-living thing.

27. What are the adaptive features of a lion that helps it in hunting?

Ans:   The following are the adaptive features of a lion that helps it in hunting:

(i) Lions have very sharp claws and teeth that help them capture the prey strongly.

(ii) They have a brown body that helps them to hide very well in the dry grass.

(iii) Lions have two sharp eyes in the front of the head, that keep their focus clearly on the prey.

Question 2. How are cactus adapted to survive in a desert? Answer: A cactus is able to survive in a desert as it is adapted to hot and dry condition of the desert. To survive in a desert, the cactus has the following adaptations:

  • It has long roots that go deep inside the soil for absorbing water.
  • Its leaves are present in the form of spines to prevent water loss through transpiration.
  • Its stem is covered with a thick waxy layer to retain water.

Question 8. Explain why speed is important for survival in grasslands for animals that live there. (Hint: there are few trees or places for animals to hide in grasslands habitats.) Answer: In grasslands, mainly grasses are found. Trees are very few in number. Predators such as lions, tigers, etc., that feed upon other animals are commonly found in these regions. It is very easy for these predators to locate their prey in grass.

Therefore, to protect themselves from these predators animals adapt themselves by increasing their speed. The increased speed of the animals help the weaker animals to escape their predator, thereby protecting themselves and increasing the chances for their survival.

Question 1. Many magazines and newspapers talk about possibility of life outside the Earth. Read these articles and have a discussion in the class about what could be defined as life outside Earth. Hint: Do it yourself.

Question 2. Visit a local zoo and find out what special arrangements are made for the animals that have been brought there from different habitats. Hint: Do it yourself.

Question 3. Find out where are the habitats of the polar bear and the penguin. For each animal, explain two ways in which it is well adapted to its habitat. Hint: Both polar bears and penguins are found in polar regions covered with snow. They have thick fur and fatty layer under their skin to protect them from cold. They are also good swimmers as swimming keeps their body warm. They have the body colour that helps them in hiding in the white background of the snow.

Question 4. Find out which animals live in the foot-hills of the Himalayas. Find out if the types and varieties of animals and plants changes as one goes higher into the mountain regions of the Himalayas. Hint: Snow leopards, takins. musk deer, red pandas, tigers, black bear, elephant, shrews, giant panda, golden eagle, alpine, etc., are found in this region. The biodiversity changes with change in altitude.

Question 5. Make a habitat album. Try to obtain pictures of animals and plants that you have listed in Activity 1 (of NCERT textbook) and paste these under different habitat sections in the album. Draw the leaf shapes and structures for trees found in these different regions and include these in the album. In addition, draw the patterns of branching found in trees of these different regions and include these also in the album. Hint: Do it yourself.

Objective: To show the effect of some abiotic factors on the germination of seeds to form young plants. Material Required: Moong seeds, water. Procedure:

  • Take some moong seeds.
  • Keep some dry moong seeds completely submerged in water for a few days.
  • Keep them soaked in water for a few days.
  • Keep the soaked and wet moong seeds in sunlight for a few days.
  • Keep some soaked and wet moong seeds in a completely dark place for a few days.
  • Keep some soaked and wet moong seeds in a very cold place, like a refrigerator, for few days.
  • Observe them carefully.

Conclusion: The abiotic factors such as water, air, sunlight and temperature are very important for the growth of plants.

A habitat can be classified into three major types: i. Terrestrial Habitat: Terrestrial habitat is the habitat for living beings who live on land, for example, humans. ii. Aquatic Habitat: Aquatic habitat is the habitat for living beings who live in water, for example, fish. iii Aerial Habitat: Aerial habitat is the habitat for living things who spend most of their life in air, for example, birds.

  • Adaptation: Adaptation is the presence of some specific features in the body which help a plant or an animal to live or survive in a particular condition. For example, camel is adapted to live in desert whereas penguin is adapted to live in very cold places near water.
  • Xerophytes: Xerophytes are the plants like cactus, agave, etc., which grow in deserts or in very dry places where there is scarcity of water.
  • Nocturnal: It is an adaptation in many desert animals who remain inactive during day time and become active during the night to prevent the loss of water from their body.
  • Hibernation: Hibernation is the long sleep for eight to nine months in a year. Certain animals hide themselves in burrows with gelatinous secretions and hibernate for long time.

Objectives: To show that a desert plant such as cactus loses very little water through transpiration. Materials required: A potted cactus plant and a potted leafy plant. Procedure:

  • Keep both the plants in sunlight for few hours.
  • Observe both the plants for a few days.

  • Food: All living organisms, whether plans or animals, eat food to get energy to live.
  • Growth: All living beings grow with times. Plants grow from a seed into a big tree.
  • Response to stimuli: Changes in the surroundings are called stimuli. Living organisms react to various stimuli.
  • Movement: All organisms moves. Humans and animals can move from one place to another. Plants move by bending towards light or curling their leaves as in mimosa plant.
  • Respiration: Respiration is the process in which food taken by an organism combines with oxygen to release energy. In this process carbon dioxide is given out.
  • Excretion: Excretion is the process of removal of waste substances from the body of living things.
  • Reproduction: Reproduction is the process by which living things produce more organisms of their own kind. This process takes place in many different ways, for different organisms.

Objective: To show that living things produce more of their own kind through reproduction. Materials required: A rose plant. Procedure:

  • Take a cutting from the plant which should have some buds on it.
  • Burry its lower part into the soil.
  • Observe it for a few days.

Observations: The cutting develops roots and grows into a new plant. Conclusion: Plants reproduce to give new plants.

1.What are the differences in the desert and sea regions? Answer:  In the sea, plants and animals are surrounded by salty water. Most of them use the air dissolved in water for breathing. In desert, a very little amount of water is available. It is very hot in the day time and very cold at night. The organisms breathe air from the surroundings.

2. What do you mean by term adaptation? Answer:  The presence of specific features or certain habits which enable a plant or an animal to live in its surroundings is called adaptation.

3. Explain the features offish which help it to adapt to live in water. Answer: (i) The shape of the fish is streamlined which help in the movement. (ii) The slippery scales/skin on their bodies to protect them. (iii) They have flat fins and tails which help them to swim, change direction and to keep the body balanced. (iv) They have gills which help in breathing in water.

4. How are camels adapted to live in desert? Answer:  (i) The feet of the camels have thick, flat large soles which help them in the movement on sand. (ii) They can live without water for a long time. When water is available, it drinks large amount of water at a time. (iii) They release very little urine to prevent loss of water. (iv) Their dung is also dry which also helps to prevent loss of water. (v) The long legs of camel helps to keep the body away from the heat of the sand.

5. What do you mean by acclimatisation? Answer:  The small changes which take place in the body of a single organism over short periods to overcome small problems due to changes in the surroundings are called acclimatisation.

6. Why do we need abiotic factors? Answer:  The abiotic factors like air, water, light and heat are very important for the growth of plants. These abiotic factors are also very important for the growth and the development of animals.

7. How are some animals adapted to live in desert? Answer:  Some animals like rats and snakes do not have the long legs like camels to stay away from the effect of heat during the day. They stay in burrows deep in the sand. They come out only during the night.

8. Write the features of desert plants. Answer:  (i) The leaves in desert plants are either absent or very small. (ii) Leaves are converted into spines which help to reduce loss of water. (iii) The stems become thick, flat and green which help in photosynthesis. (iv) The stem is covered with waxy layer which helps to retain water. In some plants stem is spongy and stores water. (v) The roots go very deep in the soil to absorb water.

9. Explain the adaptation of trees to live in mountain regions.  Answer:  (i) The shape of the trees is of normally cone type. (ii) Branches are sloping. (iii) The leaves of these trees are needle like. (iv) These structures prevent accumulation of rainwater and snow over them.

10. Explain the adaptation of animals to live in mountain region. Answer:  (i) The animals have thick skin or fur to protect them from the cold. (ii) Some animals have thick fur on their body, feet and toes which protect them from cold on walking in the snow. (iii) The goats have strong hooves for running up on rocky slopes.

11. Explain the adaptation of plants to live in water. Answer:  (i) Roots are reduced in size which hold the plant. (ii) Stems are long, hollow and light. (iii) Stems grow up to the surface of water. (iv) Leaves and flowers float on the surface of water. (v) The leaves are covered by the waxy layer which protects the leaves from excessive water.

12.What kind of movement do we see in plants? Answer: (i) Opening and closing of a flower. (ii) Growth of a stem and leaves. (iii) Movement of water, minerals and food from one part of the plant to other. (iv) Movement of stem towards sunlight and root towards water in the soil.

13. Frogs can live both on land and in water, name the adaptations seen in these animals. Answer:  Frogs have strong back legs that help them in leaping and catching their prey. They have webbed feet which help them to swim in water.

Answer:  There are following characteristics of living organisms (i) All living organisms require food. The food gives energy for growth and to maintain other life processes. Case Study 1: Meristematic tissue takes up a specific role and loses the ability to divide. As a result, they form permanent tissue. This process of taking up a permanent shape, size, and function is called differentiation. Differentiation leads to the development of various types of permanent tissues.

Simple Permanent Tissue

Tissue is made of one type of cells, which look like each other. Such tissues are called simple permanent tissue. Parenchyma is the most common simple permanent tissue. It consists of relatively unspecialized cells with thin cell walls. They are living cells. They are usually loosely arranged, thus large spaces between cells (intercellular spaces) are found in this tissue. This tissue generally stores food. In some situations, it contains chlorophyll and performs photosynthesis, and then it is called chlorenchyma. In aquatic plants, large air cavities are present in parenchyma to help them float. Such a parenchyma type is called aerenchyma. Yet another type of permanent tissue is sclerenchyma. It is the tissue that makes the plant hard and stiff. We have seen the husk of a coconut. It is made of sclerenchymatous tissue. The cells of this tissue are dead. They are long and narrow as the walls are thickened due to lignin.

Complex tissues are made of more than one type of cell. All these cells coordinate to perform a common function. Xylem and phloem are examples of such complex tissues. They are both conducting tissues and constitute a vascular bundle. Xylem fibers are mainly supportive in function. Phloem transports food from leaves to other parts of the plant. Except for phloem fibers, other phloem cells are living cells.

Case Study 2: Bone is a solid, hard porous tissue. It forms the natural skeleton and gives the body its basic structure and also supports the body. Its matrix is impregnated with phosphates and carbonates of calcium and magnesium which provides hardness to it. The matrix also contains ossein protein. The matrix is arranged in concentric rings which are called lamellae. Bone cells lie between the lamellae in fluid-filled spaces called lacunae.
