निबंध 1 (250 शब्द) – मार्टिन लूथर किंग.

मार्टिन लूथर किंग का जन्म 15 जनवरी, 1929 को अमेरिका के अटलांटा में हुआ था, और उनका पूरा नाम डॉ. मार्टिन लूथर किंग जूनियर था; एक अश्वेत जिसने सत्य और अहिंसा का मार्ग स्वीकार किया। वह समानता के लिए खड़ा था और अमेरिका में रहने वाले अफ्रीकी लोगों के लिए स्वतंत्रता लेकर आया।

उनका जीवन और प्रेरणा

यह वो व्यक्ति था जो अमेरिकी समाज में पाबंदियों के खिलाफ खड़ा था। अश्वेतों के साथ गुलामों की तरह बर्ताव किया जाता था और उनकी अपनी कोई पहचान नहीं थी और उन्हें कुछ भी और करने की अनुमति तक नहीं थी। इन लोगों को शारीरिक और मानसिक रूप से बुरी तरह से प्रताड़ित किया जाता था। वे रहते तो अमेरिका में थे मगर उनके साथ यहाँ के एक नागरिक जैसा व्यवहार नहीं किया जाता है।

मार्टिन लूथर किंग का जन्म 15 जनवरी, 1929 को अमेरिका के जॉर्जिया के अटलांटा में हुआ था। अहिंसा के लिए उनकी प्रशंसा की जाती थी और वे हमेशा लोगों को विनम्र रहने और हथियारों को अलग रखने के लिए प्रोत्साहित करते थे। वह एक प्रेरणास्रोत है और भले ही वह अब इस दुनिया में नहीं हैं, उनके विचार अभी भी हमारे बीच जीवित हैं।

वह गांधी से कैसे प्रेरित हुए

इस बड़ी सफलता के बाद, उनके एक मित्र ने उन्हें भारत आने का सुझाव दिया और कहा की यहाँ आओ और देखा कि कैसे गांधी, जिनके वे इतने बड़े प्रशंसक थे, ने भारत को गढ़ा है? मार्टिन के भी कुछ ऐसे ही विचार थे और उन्होंने भारत आने की सोची। मार्टिन ने अपनी पत्नी और बच्चों के साथ भारत की यात्रा करने की योजना बनाई, उन्होंने यह भी बताया कि बचपन के दिनों से ही उनका भारत आने का मन था और अपने सपनों की भूमि को देखकर वो बहुत खुश थे।

आखिरकार, वह भारत आ गये और 10 फरवरी से 10 मार्च तक यहां एक महीने के लिए थे और यह उनके लिए एक जागरण यात्रा थी। उन्होंने कई शहरों और विश्वविद्यालयों का दौरा किया; उन्होंने कई लोगों, छात्रों को संबोधित किया, और अफ्रीकी छात्रों से भी मिले। हर जगह उन्होंने सिर्फ लोगों को रंग-भेद और जातिवाद की सलाखों को हटाने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया। उन्होंने लोगों को प्यार करने, शांति पाने और युद्ध और हथियारों का त्याग करके भाईचारा अपनाने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया।

एक व्यक्ति जो बराबरी के लिए खड़ा रहा

मोंटगोमरी सिटी, अलबामा राज्य, यूएसए में यहाँ पर बसों में श्वेत और अश्वेतों के लिए अलग-अलग सीटों का चलन था। एक बार रोसा पार्क्स नामक एक अश्वेत महिला उस सीट पर बैठ गयी जो श्वेत के लिए आरक्षित थी और उसने श्वेत महिला के लिए सीट से उठने के लिए भी इनकार कर दिया। परिणामस्वरूप, उसे तत्काल ही गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया। उस दिन से ही अश्वेतों द्वारा बस परिवहन का बहिष्कार शुरू कर दिया गया। यह ऐतिहासिक बहिष्कार पूरे 381 दिनों तक चला। मार्टिन अमेरिका में इस आंदोलन के नायकों में से एक थे और महात्मा गांधी उनकी प्रेरणा थे जिन्होंने इतने बड़े बहिष्कार की शुरुआत की। जिसके परिणाम स्वरूप, अमेरिका की अदालत ने इस भेदभाव को असंवैधानिक करार दिया। यह अश्वेतों के लिए ऐतिहासिक उपलब्धि थी।

मार्टिन लूथर किंग ने अपने भाषण में समाज की तीन बुराइयों को चिह्नित किया और वे नस्लवाद, गरीबी और युद्ध थे। सबसे पहला है नस्लवाद, जब श्वेत अमेरिकी लोकतंत्र के लिए संघर्ष कर रहे थे, उसी समय वे अश्वेत अमेरिकियों पर तानाशाही के पक्ष में भी थे। इस समय लूथर किंग ने अश्वेतों को जागृत रहने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया। उन्होंने लोगों को इसके लिए कदम उठाने के लिए प्रेरित किया।

अब दूसरी बुराई गरीबी थी, यह उन गन्दी बस्तियों, अच्छी शिक्षा और उनके समाज को प्रभावित करने वाले कुछ अन्य मुद्दों से छुटकारा पाने का समय था। दुर्भाग्य से ये कारक अश्वेतों पर ही लागू थे और उनकी पहचान छीन रहे थे।

तीसरी बुराई युद्ध था, क्योंकि यह कभी संतुष्टि नहीं देता है और हमेशा नष्ट करता है फिर चाहे यह एक जगह हो, मानव की हानि हो, आदि। लूथर किंग युद्ध और हिंसा के खिलाफ थे। उन्होंने हमेशा अहिंसा का समर्थन किया और शांति को बढ़ावा दिया।

• 1966 में अंतर्राष्ट्रीय समझ के लिए जवाहरलाल नेहरू पुरस्कार
• 1971 में बेस्ट स्पोकेन वर्ड एल्बम के लिए ग्रैमी अवार्ड
• 1977 में स्वतंत्रता का राष्ट्रपति पदक
• 2004 में कांग्रेस स्वर्ण पदक
• 2012 में ग्रैमी हॉल ऑफ फेम

वह एक बैपटिस्ट नेता थे जिन्होंने अमेरीकी नागरिक अधिकारों के आन्दोलन के दौरान बेहद महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई थी। वो इतने ज्यादा मशहूर और शक्तिशाली थे कि कई श्वेत उन्हें और उनके विचारों को पसंद नहीं करते थे जिसके परिणामस्वरूप वर्ष 1968 में उनकी हत्या कर दी गयी। वो भाईचारे और प्रेम का सन्देश फ़ैलाने के लिए जन्म लिए थे, न सिर्फ अपने देश में बल्कि सम्पुर्ण विश्व भर में। वो भारत में भी बराबर मशहूर थे और उन्होंने अपनी किताब में भारत दौरे पर मिलने वाले प्यार और स्नेह को बखूबी दर्शाया है।

Dr. Martin Luther King / डॉ॰ मार्टिन लूथर किंग जूनियर अमेरिका के महान नेता थे। जिन्होंने अपने दम पर अमेरिका में नीग्रोज़ को उनके मौलिक अधिकार दिलाया। डॉ॰ मार्टिन लूथर किंग का जन्म सन्‌ 15 जनवरी 1929 में अमेरिका के अट्लांटा, में हुआ था। वे अमेरिका के एक पादरी, आन्दोलनकारी (ऐक्टिविस्ट) एवं अफ्रीकी-अमेरिकी नागरिक अधिकारों के संघर्ष के प्रमुख नेता थे।

महात्मा गाँधी के दिखाए अहिंसा और सत्य (Truth & Non-Violence) के मार्गपर चलने वाले मार्टिन लूथर किंग के प्रयत्नों से अमेरिका में नागरिक अधिकारों के क्षेत्र में प्रगति हुई; इसलिये उन्हें आज मानव अधिकारों के प्रतीक के रूप में भी देखा जाता है। दो चर्चों ने उनको सन्त के रूप में भी मान्यता प्रदान की है।

करियर – Dr. Martin Luther King Life History

मार्टिन लूथर किंग शुरू से ही सामाजिक काम में सक्रीय थे। सन्‌ 1955 का वर्ष उनके जीवन का निर्णायक मोड़ था। क्यूंकी इसी वर्ष कोरेटा से उनका विवाह हुआ, उनको अमेरिका के दक्षिणी प्रांत अल्बामा के मांटगोमरी शहर में डेक्सटर एवेन्यू बॅपटिस्ट चर्च में प्रवचन देने बुलाया गया और इसी वर्ष मॉटगोमरी की सार्वजनिक बसों में काले-गोरे के भेद के विरुद्ध एक महिला श्रीमती रोज पार्क्स ने गिरफ्तारी दी। इसके बाद डॉ॰ किंग ने प्रसिद्ध बस आंदोलन चलाया। पूरे 381 दिनों तक चले इस सत्याग्रही आंदोलन के बाद अमेरिकी बसों में काले-गोरे यात्रियों के लिए अलग-अलग सीटें रखने का प्रावधान खत्म कर दिया गया। बाद में उन्होंने धार्मिक नेताओं की मदद से समान नागरिक कानून आंदोलन अमेरिका के उत्तरी भाग में भी फैलाया।

मार्टिन लूथर किंग जूनियर, बस बहिष्कार आन्दोलन की सफलता के बाद नागरिक अधिकारों के एक प्रमुख नेता के रूप में उभरे। एक महान मार्च, वाशिंगटन डीसी में, मार्टिन लूथर किंग जूनियर के नेतृत्व में किया गया था।

28 अगस्त, 1963 के मार्च में पब्लिक स्कूलों और रोजगार में नस्लीय भेदभाव पर रोक लगाने सहित विचारशील नागरिक अधिकार कानून में नस्लीय अलगाव की विधिवत अंत करने मांग की। विरोध प्रदर्शन में सभी श्रमिकों के लिए नागरिक अधिकारों के संरक्षण और $ 2 न्यूनतम मजदूरी की जरूरत को भी रखा गया। वाशिंगटन डीसी के लिए एक स्वशासन की स्थापना की भी मार्च में मांग की गई थी। मार्च सफल साबित हुआ और लिंकन स्मारक पर मार्टिन लूथर किंग के 20वीं महानतम भाषण “आई हेव ए ड्रीम” के साथ संपन्न हुआ।

1968 में, SCLC के पूर्ण समर्थन के साथ, मार्टिन लूथर किंग जूनियर ने गरीब लोगों के अभियान का आयोजन किया। अभियान में संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका में सबसे गरीब समुदायों के लिए सहायता की मांग की। उसी वर्ष में, किंग ने मेम्फिस, टेनेसी के काले शहर कार्यकर्ता, जो अधिक वेतन और बेहतर इलाज के लिए हड़ताल गए, उनको समर्थन प्रदर्शित करने के लिए मेम्फिस कूच किया।

सन्‌ 1964 में उन्हें विश्व शांति के लिए सबसे कम् उम्र मे नोबेल पुरस्कार से नवाजा गया। कई अमेरिकी विश्वविद्यालयों ने उन्हें मानद उपाधियां दीं। धार्मिक व सामाजिक संस्थाओं ने उन्हें मेडल प्रदान किए। ‘टाइम’ पत्रिका ने उन्हें 1963 का ‘मैन ऑफ द इयर’ चुना। वे गांधीजी के अहिंसक आंदोलन से बेहद प्रभावित थे। गांधीजी के आदर्शों पर चलकर ही डॉ॰ किंग ने अमेरिका में इतना सफल आंदोलन चलाया, जिसे अधिकांश गोरों का भी समर्थन मिला। उन्हे अमेरिका का गाँधी भी कहा जाता है सन्‌ 1959 में उन्होंने भारत की यात्रा की थी। डॉ॰ किंग द्वारा लिखी दो पुस्तकें ‘स्ट्राइड टुवर्ड फ्रीडम’ (1958) तथा ‘व्हाय वी कैन नॉट वेट’ (1964) हैं उन्होने सन्‌ 1957 में उन्होंने साउथ क्रिश्चियन लीडरशिप कॉन्फ्रेंस की स्थापना की।

डॉ॰ किंग की प्रिय पंक्ति थी –

“हम वह नहीं हैं, जो हमें होना चाहिए और हम वह नहीं हैं, जो होने वाले हैं, लेकिन खुदा का शुक्र है कि हम वह भी नहीं हैं, जो हम थे।”

मृत्यु :- 4 अप्रैल 1968 को उन्हे अमेरिका के एक होटेल मे गोली मारकर उनकी हत्या कर दी गई।

दोस्तों इतिहास में कुछ ऐसे महान नेता हुए हैं जिन्होंने अपने दम पर पूरे देश की दिशा और दशा बदल दी है। ऐसे ही महान लीडरों में एक नाम प्रमुखता से लिया जाता है, और वो नाम है मार्टिन लूथर किंग ( Martin Luther King Jr.)    का। मार्टिन लूथर किंग  को अमेरिका में नीग्रोज़ को उनके मौलिक अधिकार दिलाने के लिए याद किया जाता है। महात्मा गाँधी ( Mahatma Gandhi ) के दिखाए अहिंसा और सत्य ( Truth & Non-Violence) के मार्ग पर चलने वाले  मार्टिन लूथर किंग ने  28, August, 1963 को  वाशिंगटन में एक ऐतिहासिक भाषण दिया था, ” I HAVE A DREAM “. आज  अच्छीखबर.कॉम   पे हम आपके साथ Martin Luther King Jr.  की उसी “I have a dream”   SPEECH को  HINDI में  share कर रहे हैं।

मैं खुश हूँ कि मैं आज ऐसे मौके पे आपके साथ शामिल हूँ जो इस देश के इतिहास में स्वतंत्रता के लिए किये गए सबसे बड़े प्रदर्शन के रूप में जाना जायेगा।

सौ साल पहले, एक महान अमेरिकी, जिनकी प्रतीकात्मक छाया में हम सभी खड़े हैं, ने एक मुक्ति उद्घोषणा (Emancipation Proclamation) पे हस्ताक्षर किये थे। इस महत्त्वपूर्ण निर्णय ने अन्याय सह रहे लाखों गुलाम नीग्रोज़ के मन में उम्मीद की एक किरण जगा दी। यह ख़ुशी उनके लिए लम्बे समय तक अन्धकार की कैद में रहने के बाद दिन के उजाले में जाने के समान था।

परन्तु आज सौ वर्षों बाद भी, नीग्रोज़ स्वतंत्र नहीं हैं।सौ साल बाद भी, एक नीग्रो की ज़िन्दगी अलगाव की हथकड़ी और भेद-भाव की जंजीरों से जकड़ी हुई हैं। सौ साल बाद भी नीग्रो समृद्धि के विशाल समुन्द्र  के बीच गरीबी के एक द्वीप पे रहता है। सौ साल बाद भी नीग्रो, अमेरिकी समाज के कोनों में सड़ रहा है और अपने देश में ही खुद को निर्वासित पाता है। इसीलिए आज हम सभी यहाँ इस शर्मनाक इस्थिति को दर्शाने के लिए इकठ्ठा हैं।

एक मायने में हम अपने देश की राजधानी में एक चेक कैश करने आये हैं। जब हमारे गणतंत्र के आर्किटेक्ट संविधान और स्वतंत्रता की घोषणा बड़े ही भव्य शब्दों में लिख रहे थे, तब दरअसल वे एक वचनपत्र पर हस्ताक्षर कर रहे थे जिसका हर एक अमेरिकी वारिस होने वाला था। यह पत्र एक वचन था कि सभी व्यक्ति, हाँ सभी व्यक्ति चाहे काले हों या गोरे, सभी को जीवन, स्वाधीनता और अपनी प्रसन्नता के लिए अग्रसर रहने का अधिकार होगा।

हम तब तक संतुष्ट नहीं होंगे जब तक एक नीग्रो, पुलीस की अनकही भयावहता और बर्बरता का शिकार होता रहेगा। हम तब तक नहीं संतुष्ट होंगे जब तक  यात्रा से थके हुए हमारे शारीर, राजमार्गों के ढाबों और शहर के होटलों में विश्राम नहीं कर सकते। हम तब तक नहीं संतुष्ट होंगे जब तक एक नीग्रो छोटी सी बस्ती से निकल कर एक बड़ी बस्ती में नहीं चला जाता। हम तब तक संतुष्ट नहीं होंगे जब तक हमारे बच्चों से उनकी पहचान छीनी जाती रहेगी और उनकी गरिमा को,” केवल गोरों के लिए” संकेत लगा कर लूटा जाता रहेगा। हम तब तक संतुष्ट नहीं होंगे जब तक मिस्सीसिप्पी में रहने वाला नीग्रो मतदान नहीं कर सकता और जब तक न्यू यॉर्क में रहने वाला नीग्रो ये नहीं यकीन करने लगता कि अब उसके पास चुनाव करने के लिए कुछ है ही नहीं। नहीं, नहीं हम संतुष्ट नहीं हैं और हम तब तक संतुष्ट नहीं होंगे जब तक न्याय जल की तरह और धर्म एक तेज धारा की तरह प्रवाहित नहीं होने लगते।

मैं इस बात से अनभिज्ञ नहीं हूँ कि आप में से कुछ लोग बहुत सारे कष्ट सह कर यहाँ आये हैं। आपमें से कुछ तो अभी-अभी जेल से निकल कर आये हैं। कुछ लोग ऐसी जगहों से आये हैं जहां स्वतंत्रता की खोज में उन्हें अत्याचार के थपेड़ों और पुलिस की बर्बरता से पस्त होना पड़ा है।  आपको सही ढंग से कष्ट सहने का अनुभव है। इस विश्वास के साथ कि आपकी पीड़ा  का फल अवश्य मिलेगा आप अपना काम जारी रखिये।

मिस्सिस्सिप्पी वापस जाइये, अलबामा वापस जाइये, साउथ कैरोलिना वापस जाइये, जोर्जिया वापस जाइये, लूजीआना वापस जाइये, उत्तरीय शहरों की झोपड़ियों और बस्तियों में वापस जाइये, ये जानते हुए कि किसी न किसी तरह यह  स्थिति बदल सकती है और बदलेगी आप अपने स्थानों पर वापस जाइये। अब हमें निराशा की घाटी में वापस नहीं जाना है।

मित्रों, आज आपसे मैं ये कहता हूँ, भले ही हम आज-कल कठिनाइयों का सामना कर रहे हैं, पर फिर भी मेरा एक सपना है (I have a dream), एक ऐसा सपना जिसकी जडें अमेरिकी सपने में निहित है।

मेरा एक सपना है  कि एक दिन यह देश ऊपर उठेगा और सही मायने में अपने सिद्धांतों को जी पायेगा।” हम इस सत्य को प्रत्यक्ष मानते हैं कि : सभी इंसान बराबर पैदा हुए हैं”

मेरा एक सपना है कि एक दिन जॉर्जिया के लाल पहाड़ों पे पूर्व गुलामो के पुत्र और पूर्व गुलाम मालिकों के पुत्र भाईचारे की मेज पे एक साथ बैठ सकेंगे।

मेरा एक सपना है कि एक दिन मिस्सिस्सिप्पी राज्य भी, जहाँ अन्याय और अत्याचार की तपिश है, एक आजादी और न्याय के नखलिस्तान में बदल जायेगा।

मेरा एक सपना है कि एक दिन मेरे चारों छोटे बच्चे एक ऐसे देश में रहेंगे जहाँ उनका मूल्याङ्कन उनकी चमड़ी के रंग से नहीं बल्कि उनके चरित्र  की ताकत से किया जायेगा।

आज मेरा एक सपना है।

मेरा एक सपना है कि एक दिन  अलबामा में, जहाँ भ्रष्ट जातिवाद है, जहाँ राज्यपाल के मुख से बस बीच-बचाव और संघीय कानून को न मानने के शब्द निकलते हैं, एक दिन उसी अलबामा में, छोटे-छोटे अश्वेत लड़के और लड़कियां छोटे-छोटे श्वेत लड़के और लड़कियों का हाँथ भाई-बहिन के सामान थाम सकेंगे।

मेरा एक सपना है।

मेरा एक सपना है कि एक दिन हर एक घाटी ऊँची हो जाएगी, हर एक पहाड़ नीचा हो जायेगा, बेढंगे स्थान सपाट हो जायेंगे, और टेढ़े-मेधे रास्ते सीधे हो जायेंगे, और तब इश्वर की महिमा दिखाई देगी और सभी मनुष्य उसे एक साथ देखेंगे।

यही हमारी आशा है, इसी विश्वास के साथ मैं दक्षिण वापस जाऊंगा। इसी विश्वास से हम निराशा के पर्वत को आशा के पत्थर से काट पाएंगे। इसी विश्वास से हम कलह के कोलाहल को भाई-चारे के मधुर स्वर में बदल पाएंगे। इसी  विश्वास से हम एक साथ काम कर पाएंगे, पूजा कर पाएंगे, संघर्ष कर पाएंगे, साथ जेल जा पाएंगे, और ये जानते हुए कि हम एक दिन मुक्त हो जायंगे, हम स्वतंत्रता के लिए साथ- साथ खड़े हो पायंगे।

ये एक ऐसा दिन होगा जब प्रभु की सभी संताने एक नए अर्थ के साथ गा सकेंगी,”My country

’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim’s pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring.”

और यदि अमेरिका को एक महान देश बनना है तो  इसे सत्य होना ही होगा।

इसलिए न्यू  हैम्पशायर के विलक्षण टीलों से आजादी की गूँज होने दीजिये,

न्यू यॉर्क के विशाल पर्वतों से आजादी  की गूँज होने  दीजिये,

पेंसिलवेनिया के अल्घेनीज़ पहाड़ों से आजादी की गूँज होने दीजिये,

बर्फ से ढकी कोलराडो की चट्टानों से  आजादी  की गूँज  होने दीजिये,

कैलिफोर्निया की घूमओदार ढलानों से आजादी की गूँज होने दीजिये,

यही नहीं, जार्जिया के इस्टोन माउंटेन से आजादी की गूँज होने दीजिये,

टेनेसी के लुकआउट माउंटेन से आजादी की गूँज होने दीजिये,

मिस्स्सिस्सिप्पी के टीलों और पहाड़ियों से आजादी की गूँज होने दीजिये,

हर एक पर्वत से से आजादी की गूँज होने दीजिये।

और जब ऐसा होगा, जब हम आजादी की गूँज होने देंगे, जब हर एक गाँव और कसबे से, हर एक राज्य और शहर से आजादी की गूँज होने लगेगी तब हम उस दिन को और जल्द ला सकेंगे जब इश्वर की सभी संताने, श्वेत या अश्वेत, यहूदी या किसी अन्य जाती की, प्रोटेस्टंट या कैथोलिक, सभी हाथ में हाथ डालकर नीग्रोज का आध्यात्मिक गाना गा सकेंगे,””Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!””

About one hundred years ago, the great President of America, Abraham Lincoln, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This proclamation freed all Negro slaves. They were promised full rights and freedom as citizens of the United States.

The Negro is not free: Even one hundred years after the emancipation from slavery, the Negroes are not free. They live in ghettos. They live in segregation. They find no justice. They live in miserable poverty.

A reminder: Martin Luther’s speech is a forceful reminder to the American nation. He says that the promises made to the Negro have not been kept. There is justice in America, but the Negro is deprived of it. There is opulence in America but the Negro lives in poverty. He lives in segregation as if he lives in exile in his own country.

Urgency of the situation: Martin Luther says that the Negro cannot wait. any longer. The movement will continue unabated till the Negro gets justice. There is no turning back. He says those who think the movement will soon be spent up, are sure to get a rude awakening. If the Negro is not granted his citizenship rights, the revolt will continue and shake the foundation of the American nation.

Advice to his people: Martin Luther tells his people that they have greatly suffered in their quest for justice. Some of them have been prosecuted, beaten up and sent to jail. He exhorts them to continue their struggle with, the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive. He tells his people that in their struggle they should do no wrong, no violence and nothing to cause hatred and bitterness. He reminds them that the whites are their friends and not their enemies.

‘I have a dream’: Martin Luther is confident that inspite of difficulties and frustration, the situation will change. He says he has a dream. He says a day will come when injustice and discrimination will end. The sons of former Salve owners and The sons of formers slaves will sit together as brothers.

He has a dream that one day white boys and girls will join hands with black boys and girls. He has a dream that one day all of them—black people and white people will sing together, “we are free”.

गुलामी से मुक्ति के एक सौ वर्ष पश्चात् भी नीग्रो स्वतंत्र नहीं हैं। वे गंदी बस्तियों में रहते हैं। वे अलगाव में रहते हैं। उन्हें कोई न्याय नहीं मिलता है। वे दयनीय निर्धनता में जीते हैं।

तकाजा-मार्टिन लूथर का भाषण अमेरिकी राष्ट्र को सशक्त तकाजा है। वह कहता है कि नीग्रो से किए गए वादे पूरे नहीं किए गए हैं। अमेरिका में न्याय है, परन्तु नीग्रो उससे वंचित हैं, वहाँ। समृद्धि है परन्तु नीग्रो निर्धनता में जीते हैं; वे अलगाव में जीते हैं जैसे कि उन्हें अपने ही देश में देश-निकाला मिला हुआ है।

परिस्थिति की तात्कालिता-मार्टिन लूथर कहता है कि नीग्रो और प्रतीक्षा नहीं कर सकते। आंदोलन बिना क्षीण हुए चलता रहेगा । जब तक नीग्रो को न्याय प्राप्त नहीं हो जाता पीछे नहीं मुड़ेंगे । वह कहता है कि जो समझते हैं कि आंदोलन हैं कि आंदोलन शीघ्र पराजित हो जाएगा। उन्हें झंझोड़ कर पड़ेगा। यदि नीग्रो को नागरिकता के अधिकार प्राप्त नहीं होते, विद्रोह चलता रहेगा, और राष्ट्र की नीं व तक हिला देंगे।

लोगों को संदेश-मार्टिन लूथर अपने लोगों से कहता है कि उन्होंने न्याय प्राप्त करने के लिए बहुत कष्ट सहे हैं। कुछ पर अभियोग लगाए गए । पीटे गए और जेल में डाल दिये गये। वह उनसे आग्रह करता है कि वे अपना संघर्ष इस विश्वास से जारी रखें कि अकारण कष्ट सहना मुक्तिप्रद होता है। वह जलोगों से कहता है कि वे अपने संघर्ष में कोई बुरा या कोई हिंसा न करें, और कुछ भी ऐसा न करें जिससे किसी प्रकार घृणा या कटुता पैदा हो । वह उन्हें स्मरण कराता है कि श्वेत लोग उनके मित्र हैं, उनके शत्रु नहीं हैं।

डॉ॰ मार्टिन लूथर किंग, जूनियर का जन्म सन्‌ 1929 में अट्लांटा, अमेरिका में हुआ था, यह पादरी, आन्दोलनकारी (ऐक्टिविस्ट) एवं अफ्रीकी-अमेरिकी नागरिक थे। इनको अमेरिका का गांधी भी कहा जाता है, बताया जाता है कि इनके प्रयासों से ही अमेरिका में नागरिक अधिकारों के क्षेत्र में प्रगति हुई थी। इसलिए आज इनको मानव अधिकारों के प्रतीक के रूप में भी देखा जाता है। अमेरिका के दो चर्चों ने इनको एक महान सन्त के रूप में भी मान्यता प्रदान की है।

इनके बारे में कहा जाता है की इन्होने संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका में नीग्रो समुदाय के प्रति होने वाले भेदभाव के विरुद्ध सफल अहिंसात्मक आंदोलन चलाया था। वर्ष 1955 का वर्ष इनकी जिन्दगी का एक निर्णायक मोड़ था, जिसमे इसी वर्ष कोरेटा नामक महिला से इनका विवाह हुआ, इसके बाद इनको दक्षिणी प्रांत अल्बामा के मांटगोमरी शहर में डेक्सटर एवेन्यू बॅपटिस्ट चर्च में बुलाया गया जिसमे इन्होने काफी समय तक प्रवचन दिया था। इसी साल मॉटगोमरी की सार्वजनिक बसों में काले-गोरे के भेद के विरुद्ध एक महिला श्रीमती रोज पार्क्स ने गिरफ्तारी दी। जिसके बाद मार्टिन लूथर ने इसके लिए भी आंदोलन चलाया था।

In the following three essays, King wrestles with the role of religion in modern society. In the first assignment, he calls science and religion “different though converging truths” that both “spring from the same seeds of vital human needs.” King emphasizes an awareness of God’s presence in the second document, noting that religion’s purpose “is not to perpetuate a dogma or a theology; but to produce living witnesses and testimonies to the power of God in human experience.” In the final handwritten essay King acknowledges the life-affirming nature of Christianity, observing that its adherents have consistently “looked forward for a time to come when the law of love becomes the law of life.”

"Science and Religion"

There is widespread belief in the minds of many that there is a conflict between science and religion. But there is no fundamental issue between the two. While the conflict has been waged long and furiously, it has been on issues utterly unrelated either to religion or to science. The conflict has been largely one of trespassing, and as soon as religion and science discover their legitimate spheres the conflict ceases.

Religion, of course, has been very slow and loath to surrender its claim to sovereignty in all departments of human life; and science overjoyed with recent victories, has been quick to lay claim to a similar sovereignty. Hence the conflict.

But there was never a conflict between religion and science as such. There cannot be. Their respective worlds are different. Their methods are dissimilar and their immediate objectives are not the same. The method of science is observation, that of religion contemplation. Science investigates. Religion interprets. One seeks causes, the other ends. Science thinks in terms of history, religion in terms of teleology. One is a survey, the other an outlook.

The conflict was always between superstition disguised as religion and materialism disguised as science, between pseudo-science and pseudo-religion.

Religion and science are two hemispheres of human thought. They are different though converging truths. Both science and religion spring from the same seeds of vital human needs.

Science is the response to the human need of knowledge and power. Religion is the response to the human need for hope and certitude. One is an outreaching for mastery, the other for perfection. Both are man-made, and like man himself, are hedged about with limitations. Neither science nor religion, by itself, is sufficient for man. Science is not civilization. Science is organized knowledge; but civilization which is the art of noble and progressive communal living requires much more than knowledge. It needs beauty which is art, and faith and moral aspiration which are religion. It needs artistic and spiritual values along with the intellectual.

Man cannot live by facts alone. What we know is little enough. What we are likely to know will always be little in comparison with what there is to know. But man has a wish-life which must build inverted pyramids upon the apexes of known facts. This is not logical. It is, however, psychological.

Science and religion are not rivals. It is only when one attempts to be the oracle at the others shrine that confusion arises. Whan the scientist from his laboratory, on the basis of alleged scientific knowledge presumes to issue pronouncements on God, on the origin and destiny of life, and on man's place in the scheme of things he is [ passing? ] out worthless checks. When the religionist delivers ultimatums to the scientist on the basis of certain cosomologies embedded in the sacred text then he is a sorry spectacle indeed.

When religion, however, on the strength of its own postulates, speaks to men of God and the moral order of the universe, when it utters its prophetic burden of justice and love and holiness and peace, then its voice is the voice of the eternal spiritual truth, irrefutable and invincible.,

"The Purpose of Religion"

What is the purpose of religion? 1  Is it to perpetuate an idea about God? Is it totally dependent upon revelation? What part does psychological experience play? Is religion synonymous with theology?

Harry Emerson Fosdick says that the most hopeful thing about any system of theology is that it will not last. 2  This statement will shock some. But is the purpose of religion the perpetuation of theological ideas? Religion is not validated by ideas, but by experience.

This automatically raises the question of salvation. Is the basis for salvation in creeds and dogmas or in experience. Catholics would have us believe the former. For them, the church, its creeds, its popes and bishops have recited the essence of religion and that is all there is to it. On the other hand we say that each soul must make its own reconciliation to God; that no creed can take the place of that personal experience. This was expressed by Paul Tillich when he said, “There is natural religion which belongs to man by nature. But there is also a revealed religion which man receives from a supernatural reality.” 3 Relevant religion therefore, comes through revelation from God, on the one hand; and through repentance and acceptance of salvation on the other hand. 4  Dogma as an agent in salvation has no essential place.

This is the secret of our religion. This is what makes the saints move on in spite of problems and perplexities of life that they must face. This religion of experience by which man is aware of God seeking him and saving him helps him to see the hands of God moving through history.

Religion has to be interpreted for each age; stated in terms that that age can understand. But the essential purpose of religion remains the same. It is not to perpetuate a dogma or theology; but to produce living witnesses and testimonies to the power of God in human experience.

"The Philosophy of Life Undergirding Christianity and the Christian Ministry"

Basically Christianity is a value philosophy. It insists that there are eternal values of intrinsic, self-evidencing validity and worth, embracing the true and the beautiful and consummated in the Good. This value content is embodied in the life of Christ. So that Christian philosophy is first and foremost Christocentric. It begins and ends with the assumption that Christ is the revelation of God. 6

We might ask what are some of the specific values that Christianity seeks to conserve? First Christianity speaks of the value of the world. In its conception of the world, it is not negative; it stands over against the asceticisms, world denials, and world flights, for example, of the religions of India, and is world-affirming, life affirming, life creating. Gautama bids us flee from the world, but Jesus would have us use it, because God has made it for our sustenance, our discipline, and our happiness. 7  So that the Christian view of the world can be summed up by saying that it is a place in which God is fitting men and women for the Kingdom of God.

Christianity also insists on the value of persons. All human personality is supremely worthful. This is something of what Schweitzer has called “reverence for life.” 8  Hunan being must always be used as ends; never as means. I realize that there have been times that Christianity has short at this point. There have been periods in Christians history that persons have been dealt with as if they were means rather than ends. But Christianity at its highest and best has always insisted that persons are intrinsically valuable. And so it is the job of the Christian to love every man because God love love. We must not love men merely because of their social or economic position or because of their cultural contribution, but we are to love them because  God  they are of value to God.

Christianity is also concerned about the value of life itself. Christianity is concerned about the good life for every  child,  man,  and  woman and child. This concern for the good life and the value of life is no where better expressed than in the words of Jesus in the gospel of John: “I came that you might have life and that you might have it more abundantly.” 9  This emphasis has run throughout the Christian tradition. Christianity has always had a concern for the elimination of disease and pestilence. This is seen in the great interest that it has taken in the hospital movement.

Christianity is concerned about increasing value. The whole concept of the kingdom of God on earth expressing a concern for increasing value. We need not go into a dicussion of the nature and meaning of the Kingdom of God, only to say that Christians throughout the ages have held tenaciouly to this concept. They have looked forward for a time to come when the law of love becomes the law of life.

In the light of all that we have said about Christianity as a value philosophy, where does the ministry come into the picture? 10

1.  King may have also considered the purpose of religion in a Morehouse paper that is no longer extant, as he began a third Morehouse paper, “Last week we attempted to discuss the purpose of religion” (King, “The Purpose of Education,” September 1946-February 1947, in  Papers  1:122).

There is a basic inconsistency in Tillich's thought at this point. On the one hand he speaks as a religious naturalist making God wholly immanent in nature. On the other hand he speaks as an extreme supernaturalist making God almost comparable to the Barthian ‘wholly other’” (King, “A Comparison of the Conceptions of God in the Thinking of Paul Tillich and Henry Nelson Wieman,” 15 April 1955, in  Papers  2:535).

Martin Luther King was a Baptist minister who conducted the civil rights movement. He was an African-American leader in the United States. He also participated in civil rights activists, which began in the mid-1950’s, which had a seismic impact on race relations in American relations. With his constant efforts, King Martin became the SCLC leader (Southern Christian Leadership Conference). Being able to speak inspirationally and energetically, King Martin additionally played a major role in airing the legal segregation of African-American citizens in the US, and he also played a pivotal role in enacting the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Martin was born on January 15, 1929, as a second child of Alberta Williams King and Michael King Sr., A.D. Williams was his grandfather who had been a rural minister for many years and finally moved to Atlanta in 1893. He was able to take care of small and struggling Ebenezer Baptist church, having just 13 members, and wherein within a few time, he made it into a big and forceful congregation. Initially, King Martin was admitted in segregated public schools, while at the age 15, he got admission to Morehouse College to study Medicine and Law.

Since he was not interested in following the footstep of his father, thus, he changed his mind accordingly guided by Dr. Benjamin Mays, who was an advocate for racial equality. When he completed his graduation in 1948, he moved to Pennsylvania to pursue a Bachelor of Divinity degree, where he won a remarkable fellowship, and he was also chosen as the president of his predominantly white senior class. In 1953, he got admission at Boston University to accomplish his coursework, and after two years, he was also able to earn a doctorate in systematic theology.

Meantime, he met with Coretta Scott, studying at the New England Conservatory of Music. She was a single from Alabama. The two married in the same year and were blessed with four children named Martin Luther King III, Dexter Scott King, Yolanda Dennis King and Bernice Albertine King who were with them until their deaths. After his marriage, King Martin continued his research work at Boston Graduate School and in 1955, he was able to get his PHD. At the same time, King Martin was also an eminent Civil Right Activist who kept trying to get rid of discrimination and to abolish unfair segregation laws in the South.

In 1956, two attempts were made by throwing bombs on to the porch of Martin Luther King Jr’s house, fortunately, both times, the bombs did not explode. In this same year, King Martin was arrested because of taking part in hindering operations of buses without having a legal cause. He also published a book named “Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story” in 1958. In 1960, he along with his family moved to Atlanta where he became the co-pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church of his father’s old church.

Martin Luther King Jr. was pressurized to lead a march in Albany in 1962. Afterwards, he gave a speech that inspired millions of Africa-American people. Being a powerful speaker and influencing nature, he was elected as the leader of a group known as the Montgomery Improvement Association. After that, King Martin started a protest against segregated buses. This protest was started when an old lady named Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat, and later she was arrested.

After this protest, King Jr. encouraged the public to boycott the segregated buses also. All this made white people angry for King Martin, and they also wanted to kill them by throwing bombs in his house. To end this violence, Martin Luther, with other African-American ministers, established the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. During the conference, African-American College boys started occupying white tables only. This protest was interrupted by the southern police that was also shown on the television. Meanwhile, President Kennedy sent a bill to deal with this situation in favour of Congress. Soon, there was the end of segregation law.

Death and Memorial of King Martin

In 1968, Martin King was giving a speech in Tennessee in front of a massive crowd, named as “I’ve been to the mountain top”; unfortunately, James Earl Ray shot him and he died. That speech was about African-American garbage men. The attacker was caught, and unfortunately, he was sentenced to jail for only nine years. Every year, on King Martin’s birthday, Martin Luther King Day is celebrated in the US as a national holiday to honour his work.
