Van Helsing: The London Assignment is an Animated “Diamond in the Rough”

Logo

While researching for my Van Helsing Mixes Monsters for Movie Magic post I found out that there was a cartoon short released in conjunction with the major motion picture. Van Helsing: The London Assignment tells the story of what Van Helsing is doing in the days leading up to the start of the film.

Van Helsing

Van Helsing

Van Helsing is on the trail of a vicious London-based murderer who not only kills his lovely female victims, but leaves their bodies twisted and mummified. But even after this string of heinous crimes, the order to which Van Helsing belongs demands that he try to capture the fiend and save his soul from damnation.

Hyde on train

Hyde on train

He soon meets the monster, none other than the giant Mr. Hyde who helps Hugh Jackman open the live-action movie. In an interesting twist, Dr. Jekyll is every bit as evil (or even eviler) than his alter ego, but he is doing all in the name of love.

gargoyle

I called this 30 minute short a “diamond in the rough” because a lot of the animation is jerky and reminiscent of Hanna Barbara cartoons (no offense Scooby Doo!) with intermittent flashes of brilliance. The action sequences clearly got more love (or maybe just a bigger budget) than other scenes, which is to be expected, but it was kind of distractingly lopsided. That being said, it is a fun story that made me alternatingly chuckle and say “whoa!” It really felt like a noir comic book come to life, which was cool to see.

Balloon

There is a nice documentary in the special features about the making of the live-action movie which is really cool. I learned that both Kate Beckingsale and Hugh Jackman did most if not all of their own amazing stunts.

You can watch the full cartoon through youtube below!

Its basically Catholic Batman in the victorian era. Also still cant get over the fact that we lost multiple spin offs and series bcz of bad reviews on the movie. This short shows how passionate they were. wouldv loved to see more of Huge Jacked Man take on gothic literary monsters.

Universal. DVD 1.78 :1 Color  Digital  12 A nice little prologue of the Van Helsing character with a decent amount of depth. Jackman's accent feels a little off but his voice work is great and dynamic with Wenham sounds and works well. The animation itself looks great and surprisingly violent throughout. It's twist on events in London was interesting but barely touched the surface.

I would have preferred this short cartoon to have developed into a Van Helsing movie because even this little bit we got is much better than the movie.

This short cartoon is a the story of Jack the Ripper combined with the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

The cartoon starts mysteriously and provides a good basis for the further story, but due to its short duration, it quickly jumps to parts of the chase in order to make some kind of complete ending.

The animation is also well done, and I'm sorry that this cartoon isn't a bit longer, because it would have been much better and more popular.

Remember that Hugh Jackman Van Helsing movie that was massive in 2004 and no ones really talked about it since? This was like a promo or cash in animated movie from around its release. It's not horrible, change the names of the characters and you're just watching an animated Batman movie.

Man, I really wish this would’ve developed into a proper franchise.

This, in particular, makes me wish for a Van Helsing animated series. He could’ve had a different Universal monster every week, with some recurring ones (Dracula, of course, but also maybe the Invisible Man or Imhotep).

At 30 mins this probably should’ve just been an extra on the Van Helsing DVD but I checked it out from the library so I don’t really care.

Instead of a 30 minute prequel I would have loved this to be a full length animated movie or even a tv show.... we were robbed!

Van Helsing: The London Assignment

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/59cc59ff_650e_4d87_93ac_9352afd8c172.jpeg

The London Assignment is a short animated Supernatural Action Horror Mystery Fiction Prequel to Van Helsing , both released in 2004 with the prequel produced by Production I.G and animated by Sunwoo Entertainment . It stars Hugh Jackman who returns to provide the voice for Van Helsing.

A string of strange murders are going on in London, and the Vatican sends Van Helsing ( Hugh Jackman ) and Carl ( David Wenham ) to look in to the matter. They then discover a fiendish plot by one Dr. Jekyll/Mr Hyde ( Dwight Schultz / Robbie Coltrane ) which involves Queen Victoria ( Tara Strong ).

This prequel has examples of:

  • Absurdly Spacious Sewer : After the underground train crashes, Van Helsing and Friar Carl chase after Mr. Hyde through rather spacious sewer lines.
  • Badass Boast : Mr. Hyde: Who are you? Van Helsing: What you fear most. ( Dramatic Thunder )
  • Big Bad : Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde.
  • Blunt "Yes" : A humourous example- Victoria : Are you giving me an order?! Van Helsing : Pretty much.
  • Deadpan Snarker : Van Helsing, Carl and Hyde all have their moments. Hyde : You're no policeman! Van Helsing : You don't miss much.
  • Dem Bones : While making their way to Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde's lair through a patch of underground fire, Van Helsing and Friar Carl are attacked by a horde of undead beefeaters.
  • Disguised in Drag : Van Helsing makes Friar Carl dress as a woman and hang around London at the night to lure out Mr. Hyde. Van Helsing : Stop squirming! Carl : If you'd brought me the proper size corset , I wouldn't have to squirm! Van Helsing : There! A vision of loveliness! Carl : I told the Cardinal when he got your cable, I am not a field man! Van Helsing : There's not much danger of you being mistaken for any kind of man, Carl. Carl : Ugh, you put on too much powder, and this lip rouge with this scarf?! No real lady would be caught dead (Beat) ... Perhaps not the best choice of words . Van Helsing : Carl, for a friar, you know an awful lot about lip rouge. Carl : Anything worth doing is worth doing well ...even being demon bait.
  • Evil Plan : Dr. Jekyll plans to use the souls stolen by him to turn Queen Victoria young again, and then marry her.
  • Foregone Conclusion : If you have seen the original film, you know that it would end with Mr. Hyde escaping and Van Helsing following him to Paris.
  • Groin Attack : While disguised as a woman, Friar Carl has to fend off advances from a man by kicking him in the groin.
  • The Jekyll Is a Jerk : The original Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde feature as the main villains of the story, with both being monstrous in their own way. While Hyde is still the murderous brute he was in the live-action film, Jekyll is a self-deluding stalker who's been more than willing to profit from Hyde's murders in order to advance his own scheme.
  • Monumental Battle : The hot air balloon that Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde tries to escape with crashes on the London Bridge, where the final battle takes place.
  • My God, You Are Serious! : Van Helsing's reaction to Victoria's true identity (since he's more used to seeing her as the old woman she should be at the time of the story, rather than the young woman in front of him). Victoria : Sir, since it is obvious that you do not recognise me, I am Alexandrina Victoria Wettin by the grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Queen, Defender of the Faith. Van Helsing : Queen Victoria?! [He bursts out laughing, only to then catch sight of Victoria's Death Glare ) Seriously?
  • Prequel : The animated film takes place before the events of the original film.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning : Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde's lackeys have red glowing eyes.
  • Slashed Throat : The story opens with Mr. Hyde cornering his latest victim and slicing her throat open.
  • Royal Brat : The young Victoria has shades of this, she improves after Van Helsing saves her… until she returns to her older form .
  • Stalker with a Crush : Dr. Jekyll has been obsessed with Queen Victoria (and convinced that she returns his feelings) since he first saw her on her coronation day.
  • Traintop Battle : Soon after discovering Mr. Hyde in the underground train, Van Helsing has to battle him on top of it.
  • Two Aliases, One Character : It turns out that Jack the Ripper was actually Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde.
  • Wham Line : Victoria : Why would I need someone to give me youth?! I'm only twenty years old! Van Helsing : Your Majesty...you're seventy .
  • Would Hit a Girl : Dr. Jekyll is Jack the Ripper , killing prostitutes in Whitechapel to use their souls in his plans to de-age Queen Victoria.
  • Your Soul Is Mine! : After killing his victims, Mr. Hyde uses a special vial to collect their souls, which are then used to de-age Queen Victoria .

Van Helsing: The London Assignment (2004) [short film, animation, action]

Demon hunter Gabriel Van Helsing is sent to London to investigate a series of mysterious murders. And soon he discovers a sinister plot that threatens the very heart of the nation…

This animated short film [30 minutes] does not really belong on my blog, because it is not a vampire film. Although with a lot of good will you could argue that you briefly catch sight of a vampire in one scene. The reason I reviewed this film was that it has been made as a direct prequel to the 2004 live action film Van Helsing .

That film featured a lot of vampires, of course. But, as you may remember, that Van Helsing character created by writer/director Stephen Sommers (who, along with his editor Bob Ducsay, is listed among the executive producers of this animated film) does not just hunt vampires but all sorts of demons – depending on the case his bosses assign him to. A decision no doubt taken with a view to possible sequels and spin-offs (which never materialised).

In the cold opening scene of the live action film, we saw Van Helsing battle Mr Hyde in Paris. This animated prequel is the story of the investigation that preceded this encounter in Paris; and the Paris scenes in the live action film thus serve as an epilogue to the animated short. So far, so complicated. What is interesting is that both the live action feature film and the animated short were released at the same time. So the productions must have been happening in a roughly parallel manner (which might explain how they managed to get many members the feature film cast to also voice their characters for the animation). Which means that the idea for the prequel was not an afterthought but existed more or less from the beginning; and I would really love to know what the thinking behind this was. Was this intended as a promotional vehicle for both the feature film and the computer game, thus justifying the production costs? Or was this short film made with the confident belief that it would make its money back on its own accord?

Be that as it may – and all my unnecessarily long “prequel-talk” aside – this short film also works perfectly well as a stand-alone. No-one encountering this film would feel lost just because they have not seen the live action film. The plot is self-contained, and it is rather well written and well told. I also like the animation style of the film, and well as its pacing. The only writing problem is the motivation of the Jekyll/Hyde character – a motivation on which the whole premise rests. It feels a bit silly, but since this is an animated film you are more likely to accept it than you would be in a “real” film.

There is little else to say about this short. I could see myself happily rating it at 7 out of 10. But as far as recommendations go, the fact that it is only 30 minutes long means that you have to consider what money you want to spend on it. Van Helsing: The London Assignment has been given its own, independent DVD release; and unless you can get a used copy for a buck (as I did), I am not sure the DVD is worth purchasing. This is, at the end of the day, a curio – some add-on material that by rights should be included in the bonus features of a DVD/BluRay release of the feature film (maybe it even is, today, in some cases, who knows?). As a stand-alone DVD it appears slightly preposterous, even though my Region1 DVD of Van Helsing: The London Assignment has been padded out with some bonus material; including one major featurette that has nothing to do with the animated film but is basically a “making-of” for the live-action film.

Van Helsing: The London Assignment Review

van helsing the london assignment review

Animation fans it's very rare for me to review a film that isn't feature length but here we are i've found something that is worth reviewing and yeah it's pretty freaking bad so here is my review of Van Helsing: The London Assignment don't worry if you havn't heard of it nobody has but chances are you've heared of it's live action counterpart tho.

The plot to this movie finds Van helsing and his mate Friar Carl sent to London to investigate a series of murders and find that they are connected to the mysterious Dr. Henry Jekyll. I'll admit that the plot is kind of interesting since it does have an interesting twist but then again it's set in the world of the 2004 Van Helsing movie and yes this movie is a prequel so you know right away who's going to come out on top.

van helsing the london assignment review

Returning from the live action film is Hugh Jackman as Gabriel Van Helsing , Robbie Coltrane as Edward Hyde / Jack the Ripper , David Wenham as Friar Carl and Alun Armstrong as Cardinal Jinette. They are joined by Tress MacNeille as Queen Victoria , Tara Strong as Young Victoria and Grey DeLisle as the First Victim. The amount of talent in this film is unbelievable and what's more unbelievable is how bad Hugh Jackman's voice acting is seriously dude just stick to doing musicals and playing Wolverine.

Now even tho the live action film wasn't that good the film did make $300 million against a $160 million dollar budget. So Universal if they wanted could have made an animated sequel but for some reason they chose to make a prequel and they must have known that they didn't have enough of an interesting story because this "film" is around thirty minuets so it's know where close to feature length.

van helsing the london assignment review

The animation for this "film" was done by Sunwoo Entertainment who have worked on a lot of impressive shows some examples include DarkWing Duck , Rugrats and Talespin. So it might surprise you when I say that the animation in this film is ok at best it's not the worst seen out there but it was quite clearly rushed since alot of the drawings look off.

I mentioned before that this was a prequel to the 2004 film and the main returning characters do look alot like there live action counterparts so the film does have that going in it's favor. However what it doesn't have going in it's favor is the fact that it falls into the same pitfalls as every prequel out there and the fact that this film came out the exact same year as the original film. So I have no idea if the plan was to always release an animated prequel which if that was the case then why not put it on the Van Helsing DVD and if you want to make a prequel don't have the Van Helsing character appear that way we have no idea where the story is going.

van helsing the london assignment review

Just going back to what I was on about before the original film came out on May 7th 2004 this film was released on May 11th and for some reason it was left of the Van Helsing DVD. I will say that I did find the villains motivations a little of because he's being evil for the sake of trying to win a girl and that's it. If anything that's not a reason to turn to the side of evil that should be the reason why you want tot stay good heck they don't even explain why he's evil.

For the entire running time I was wondering why this film is just so bland and then the end credits rolled up and I saw the very reason why it's bland it was produced by the prince of bad movies Stephen Sommers. That right there explains so much about this movie because while it is well made and the story is interesting it's also trying to explain certain things that appear in the 2004 movie and those are the things that just don't work.

The action can at times be pretty exciting to watch but at the same time there's a lot of just plain boring action scenes as well. When the action is done well it is generally exciting to see there's lots of cool looking flips and visuals but just when it gets exciting it then becomes very generic and boring to look at.

Overall this is a very poor excuse of a "film" and yes i'm putting the word film in quotation marks because it's not even feature length so if anything it's like those half hour Scooby-Doo episodes that you find on the DVD's this "film" tho gets a 5 out of 10 from me.

  11. Van Helsing: The London Assignment (2004)

  12. Van Helsing: The London Assignment

A nice little prologue of the Van Helsing character with a decent amount of depth. Jackman's accent feels a little off but his voice work is great and dynamic with Wenham sounds and works well. The animation itself looks great and surprisingly violent throughout. It's twist on events in London was interesting but barely touched the surface.
