Essay on Mobile Phones: 400 Words

When telephone was first introduced in the world in the 1950s, people were keenly interested in it. As an easier way of communication, telephone has its own merit. Of late, the introduction of mobiles makes an easy access to communication. It is in fact inevitable in the present day of hurry and business. People have warmly accepted mobiles as the blessing of science. There is little doubt that without the use of mobiles none is nowadays able to lead one’s life quite normally. One is capable of communicating with people, staying far away very quickly. Thus many a problem can be well- solved by way of using these mobiles.

But everything has its merit and demerit. As science is a bane as well as a boon, mobiles are to some extent to be cursed. People, especially the young generation, have been abusing mobiles. They not only chat in an unexpected way but also indulge themselves in leading immoral life by abusing mobiles. Apart from this, several mercenary companies exploit the advantage of mobiles to meet their selfish ends. They do business through mobiles. As a result, young people have been misguided. To use mobiles is for them to be up to date. They avail themselves of the opportunity of the internet connection in their mobiles and do whatever they like to do. Obscene video clippings and some other versions of immoral entertainment are now available in mobiles. Therefore, the students have now tremendous fascination for the mobiles. Consequently, instead of studying, concentrate on using mobiles for sheer fun.

Another demerit is that because of the excessive use of the mobiles different companies plunge themselves into doing profitable business. Consequently, numerous towers have been erected for the network of mobiles. It is well known that a particular wave which is responsible for the mobile network does harm to the ecological balance of the environment. It is evident in the pale colors of the trees and fruits adjacent to the mobile towers.

Thus, it is the time to be conscious of the abuse of the mobiles. The concerned authority should take immediate steps to stop immoral business which is proliferating in abusing mobiles. All should remember that the sole purpose of mobile is to communicate. Entertainment may be available in the network of mobiles. But there should be no immoral design. Above all, the government should restrict the use of mobiles, so much so that anti-social activities may not be done through mobiles.

As the most advanced and modern living beings on the earth, human beings need equipment and devices to communicate with each other and with the world. Mobile phones are the most sophisticated communicating devices which enable people to not just talk with others, but also to play games, watch movies, listen to songs, and enjoy different modes of entertainment.

Mobile phones were established in 1973 as portable handsets. But from there it has evolved into walkie-talkies, small mobile phones, and later on the androids and iPhones. The greater the change in appearance, the better the quality of the phone. Today mobile phones are the definition of development. Without it, the internet cannot be used and one will remain completely disconnected from the world.

If there is anything that can define the 21st century is the gadgets that human beings use for their daily purposes. Several instruments are necessary for our daily needs and we simply cannot think of our lives without them. A mobile phone is one of those gadgets which occupies a very important position in our lives.

It was invented by the Motorola company on 3rd April 1973 as a portable handset like the handset of the landline telephone connections. Its only purpose at that time was to make and receive phone calls. The portable form made it altogether more attractive. For a more extended period, such phones or walkie-talkies were in vogue.

However, with a change in time, mobile phones also have undergone evolution at different levels. In the beginning, the handsets were reduced in size, and a screen was added to see the time, place, and the name of the person calling.

It was equipped with other minimal settings and language changes and also provided with a small fun game. With the invention of smartphones as android systems and later through iPhones, today the concept of mobile phones is greatly altered. It includes a camera, internet, banking facilities, and several applications for shopping and selling. The Internet now defines the use of mobile phones. So without this device, one can hardly even exist in the modern world.

The mobile phone is one of the most important devices of all. It is the premium model of communication and environment in the present-day world. Since its invention, it has now undergone several evolution and changes. As a result, it has tied up with the developing century and accustomed itself to its needs. Today we can hardly think of living without a mobile phone for even some hours. It is the most indispensable need of mankind and a marker of its development.

Mobile phones were invented by the Motorola company on 3rd April 1973, as portable headsets so that they can be used as a walkie-talkie. It is the first step towards the development of mankind in a more sophisticated method. It enabled humans to use it without the connecting wire of the landline telephone connections. However, those sorts of telephones were only used for calling and receiving phone calls. It had no screen and only buttons for calls.

Later on, with gradual research and developments, phones were modified into the first modern-day mobile phones, famously popularized by Nokia. It was the first handset with a screen that was much more than just simply calling the other person. It included a small screen for the first time that showed the time and simple details of the mobile phone. It contained several minimal settings and also some simple games for fun purposes.

The mobiles had ringtones and colour changes for personalized versions of their own. Thus with this more research took place and the present android system was created for the first time. Companies like Samsung, Nokia, Lenovo, and others started producing androids. It has much more developed functions with the application of the internet.

Thus more sophisticated games and software can now be accommodated into this new system. Systems like video calls and other messaging facilities, and social media applications like Whatsapp, Facebook, messenger, and others are introduced into android phones. Presently, iPhones are the most expensive and sophisticated ones.

With growing times mobile phones have also developed. However, that has created ample problems too. Many people including children are getting addicted to their phones. Harmful games and gambling are destroying the youth. Several health issues are happening due to the prolonged use of mobile phones. Also, phones are becoming quite expensive to afford by the common people with low capital. Thus with these difficulties in mind, one has to be quite careful in handling this modern electronic device.

Essay on Mobile Phone Boon or Bane – 400 Words

Mobile phones are a boon as they are used for a number of useful purposes. Nevertheless, there is also no denying the fact that a gadget as useful as a mobile phone could sometime be annoying and irritating.

Boon or Bane

Of course mobile phones are a boon given to the number of useful purposes they are used for like – internet, voice or video chat, documentation etc. Despite from the usual there are other uses like – social media and remain updated about the developments. Today every mobile phone user has a social media account, which he manages from his mobile phone. It helps him/her to remain connected to family and friends as well as other dignitaries like politicians, actors, cricketers etc.

But despite all the advantages, mobile phones could sometimes be annoying too. The use of mobile phones for various purposes and the accessibility of internet have compromised the privacy of the user. Also, every form that we fill today has a mandatory column asking to provide the phone number. Today the number of a common mobile phone user is available with many marketing agencies whose main aim is to sell their product. This loop hole in privacy has led to unwanted and unexpected marketing calls. People get annoying calls from insurance agents, marketing executives, etc, trying to sell their products to the mobile phone user, who is not at all interested.

Next in line is social media. Social media is a place where people share their views, pictures etc with those who are connected. However, this has also compromised the privacy to a certain level as someone undesirable could also peek into your account and send annoying messages; trailing you regularly. Such unwanted social buffs could be really annoying and some people are known to be trailed so regularly using inappropriate and indecent comments that they had to totally shut down their social media account.

In the end it would be more appropriate to say that mobile phones are both a boon and a bane. They are a boon when used appropriately and within limits but could be bane when they are used with mala fide intentions. Even a useful gadget as a mobile phone could be well annoying when it is used with the bad intention of deceiving someone, trailing him/her inappropriately on social media and other accounts.

The number of mobile users has increased tremendously in the last decade. Even rural areas of densely populated countries like India and Bangladesh have been connected to the mobile network. Mobile phones are now in the hands of people of all ages and professions. Young people, in particular, have welcomed and embraced smartphones with open arms.

The decrease in call rates can be imagined from the fact that it cost around 16 rupees per minute when mobiles were introduced in India and today it costs as little as 1 paisa per 2 seconds. Even the size of mobile phones has become smaller and the design has become more user-friendly within a very short time. They were like walkie-talkies when they were introduced. The shape of those phones just a few years ago now makes people laugh.

A mobile phone has versatile uses. It allows us to call anyone from anywhere, send text messages to anyone when they are busy, send and receive emails, surf the internet, set alarm clocks, check the time, use calculators, keep a presence on social media like Facebook and Twitter , set reminders, keep notes , make voice calls, video calls and send pictures, videos and messages to any part of the world with apps like WhatsApp .

Navigation apps like Google Maps on mobile phones guide us when we travel to unfamiliar areas. Modern smartphones have high-resolution cameras, so we can take clear pictures of any scene. Due to the easy availability of mobile phones, mobile banking has now been introduced, which has made money transactions much easier and hassle-free. Now we don’t have to look for hawkers to know the news from home and abroad because one can read newspapers of any country and any language in the world right now on a smartphone. The role of a mobile phone in entertainment is even greater. It includes listening to music, watching movies, enjoying dramas, movies, or religious ceremonies, and attending various live shows.

Mobile phone, the small and light device, has revolutionized people’s lives. Today, anyone with a phone can be available around the clock and get up-to-date information on anything. Especially, the availability of the internet on mobile phones has greatly increased its usefulness. This has brought speed in trade and commerce. A rural farmer in India or Tunisia can now learn the rates in the remote market through a cellphone and sell his fruits, crops, and vegetables at reasonable prices. The convenience of sending content enables one person to send a message without actually bothering others.

Nowadays modern mobile phones, often called smartphones, are very light (less than 100 grams) and stylish, can work seamlessly for about 15 hours, and prices can range from just $20 to $100. In the twenty years from 1990 to 2010, worldwide mobile phone subscriptions grew from 12.4 million to over 4.6 billion.

How Mobile Phone Works: Nowadays, cellular phones make use of the cellular network concept, where frequencies are re-used repeatedly within a city area. It allows many more users to share access to the radio bandwidth. A mobile phone allows calls to be placed over a wide geographic area. It can make and receive telephone calls to and from the public telephone network which includes other mobiles and fixed-line phones across the world. It does this by connecting to a cellular network provided by a mobile network operator.

Other Services: In addition to telephony, modern mobile phones also support a wide variety of other services such as text messaging, MMS, email, Internet access, short-range wireless communications (infrared, Bluetooth), business applications, gaming, and photography. Mobile phones that offer these more general computing capabilities are referred to as smartphones.

Mobile Phones in Bangladesh: Citycell (Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Limited) is the first company to provide mobile phone service in Bangladesh and the only CDMA mobile operator in the country. At present, the leading mobile phone companies in the country are GrameenPhone (GP), Robi, Banglalink, Citycell, Airtel, and Teletalk. The total number of active subscribers of mobile phones in Bangladesh has reached 180 million at the end of 2021.

Uses of Mobile Phone: Mobile phone has made our life much easier. It has played an important role in improving connectivity among people. Now we can contact other people with surety and much convenience. It has also made business and commercial activities much easier by providing better communication.

Abuses of Mobile Phone: We can also find some drawbacks of mobile phones. It is often misused by criminals. They use this technology for criminal activities such as abduction, terrorism, robbery, theft, etc.

Conclusion: In spite of the abuses of the mobile phone, its necessity and importance cannot be overlooked. In fact, nowadays, we cannot do without a mobile phone even for a single day.

Uses and Abuses of Mobile Phone Essay

The mobile phone is one of the wonders and the fastest-growing inventions of modern science. It is a cellular phone, which does not have any wire. It works anywhere where the network is available. This tiny device has made a huge difference in human civilization. Human interconnection has never been so easy. At present almost every inch of place in the world is covered by the mobile network, so we are no longer likely to get lost. Now it can be said that there is no such thing as distance. No matter where we are in the world, we are always connected with our friends and family through mobile phones.

Moreover, through mobile phones, we can use the internet. A smartphone is now used as an alternative to a computer because there are many kinds of apps in the latest mobile phones which perform different types of tasks like sending and receiving emails, using social sites, writing and editing documents, capturing photos, etc. Nowadays, we can pay bills, send money, get news and also apply for jobs or admission using mobile phones. The number of mobile phone users is increasing day by day due to its multi-dimensional use.

But every positive thing has some negative aspects as well. So, mobile phone is not an exception to this. Teenagers often spoil their valuable time by talking to their friends for a long time or using social sites. Different mobile operators often offer some midnight free or low-cost calls. Teenagers mostly take this advantage and thus hamper their normal life. Most, unfortunately, miscreants can easily commit crimes through mobile phones. Apart from these, young people can have easy access to different adult sites through mobile phones. Most importantly, scientists are warning that excessive use of mobile phones can cause brain cancer, and hamper the mental growth of children. But despite these disadvantages, we still use the mobile phone as it has been a part and parcel of our daily life.

500 Words Essay On Smartphone

In many aspects, smartphones are beneficial in our daily lives. The use of cell phones is essential to everyday life. The smartphone is an excellent improvement to our life. Our work has been made simpler and more convenient due to it. It has numerous uses, including a phone, camera, music player, and alarm clock. We can maintain contact with our friends and family members thanks to it.

Understanding The Smartphone

A smartphone is a mobile gadget that makes it possible to combine cellular and mobile computing capabilities into a single device. In addition, compared to feature phones, smartphones offer more powerful hardware and robust mobile operating systems. Smartphones' robust operating systems enable online browsing, software, and multimedia features. They also support standard phone features like voice calls and text messaging.

Importance Of Smartphones In Our Life

A smartphone is a mobile phone that provides more sophisticated networking and computational capabilities than a typical mobile phone. A touchscreen interface, an internet connection, and an operating system that can execute downloaded programmes are all standard features of a smartphone.

The Simon Personal Communicator, built in 1992, was the original smartphone. It incorporated functions from many devices, including a cell phone, pager, fax machine, and contact book. However, cell phones did not take off until the 2000s.

The ability to always be online is one of the key factors contributing to cell phones' immense popularity. This enables us to keep up with current events, check our email and social media accounts, and even conduct online shopping. We can communicate with our friends and family via smartphones. We can reach them whenever we want by phone, text, or video-chat.

Smartphone Use By Students

Students can benefit from smartphones. They can use them to look up material swiftly, take class notes, and maintain organisation. Nevertheless, there are several drawbacks to using a smartphone in class. A student may not be paying attention to the lecture and miss vital information if they are continually using their phone.

While some schools have outlawed cell phone use in the classroom, others have welcomed it and have even developed apps that can be used for learning. The best course of action for each school's children is up to them.

The excessive use of cell phones has some drawbacks. For instance, if we are always staring at our phones, we risk missing out on what is happening worldwide. We could also develop a phone addiction and use them excessively. This may result in issues like anxiousness and lack of sleep.

My Life Experiences

In my home, there are five smartphones, one for my father, one for my mother, one for my sister, one for my brother, and one for myself. We all use smartphones for personal work. Smartphones help us in many ways, depending on how we use them. A smartphone can affect us in both ways, negatively and positively, depending on how we use it. My father always told us to use mobile phones with a limit. We all have phone-free zones in our house where we are not allowed to use any devices and we spend that time bonding with each other or reading books.

Overall, smartphones have a lot of benefits and uses that make our life easier. However, to use them wisely, we should be aware of any potential drawbacks.

Cell Phone as an Indispensable Companion Essay

Life can be a tremendously overwhelming process depending on an individual’s direct surroundings. Challenges expert licensed require an inspiration factor particularly when an individual is away from home and relatives for some time.

Keeping contact with friends and kin is valuable in life to keep updated on what is occurring within the social order. There are several things in life we practically cannot live without which have proven to be of considerable help.

The cell phone has always been my most central companion and can be immensely categorized as the most noteworthy object in my existence.

This device has enabled me to keep up with friends and family and meet with new people who have contributed to my development and maturity in the current world characterized by inventions and socialization.

The portability attribute gives this device its splendor. The electronic machine is commonly found in all areas in the world hence easing the process of communication. It has brought a variety of innovative things for the user and to a substantial extent affected the way people relate in the globe.

I have used it for both private and specialized purposes in my occupation as a nurse. The cell phone is a vital way of communicating with superiors and colleagues while on the ground thus forestalling critical situations.

The phone enables the access of technologies like the camera and the related modifications. These have been helpful in several situations in my life. An example is a situation while at work when I had to deal with a tragedy involving a snake bite.

It was a life-threatening situation which involved identifying the snake to take the appropriate first-aid procedures. Through my know-how, I could make out the snake, but it had a particularly different shade of color which I could not relate to.

In nursing, there is room for risk-taking, so I had to be particularly certain on practical action to save the life of the combatant.

Luckily I remembered just in time that my phone had an inbuilt camera. I quickly photographed the snake and uploaded the image to a snake specialist who readily identified the species and advised us on how to deal with the situation.

Apart from the camera, there are several other features which increase the importance of this gadget. The latest phone offers superb quality music which is necessary for leisure purposes.

As a nurse, I was exposed to many situations while assisting navy personnel who are frequently faced with crises. Their controlling character personality constantly made the work look harder than it was; hence once in a while, I would listen to tunes from my phone to relax.

In today’s busy society, having a portable device to communicate through is expedient. Whether it is sending messages through the Internet or getting updated on the latest news, my cell phone has ensured that I am aware of the latest happenings.

Having reachable Internet is indispensable especially to a student who is required to do research. A feature like an alarm clock has enabled me to keep time for appointments and lectures.

The need for carrying several electronic devices like cameras, recorders, and melody players has been considerably reduced. An ultra-modern handset is presently equipped with all the features thus reducing the stress associated with carrying several types of equipment.

The technical progress has been of immense use in storing files in the form of text applications on the phone. Most of these features have eliminated carrying of bulky books and laptops in class especially when the cell phone has a memory of 10 GB.

One of the desired applications of the cell phone is the ease of handling transactions. The risk of walking around with money amidst widespread mugging is reduced by the phone’s ability to administer on-spot transactions.

Electronic transfers involved in paying education fees are easy to perform compared to the long lines experienced in banking. Surveys indicate that students of a different kind use the cell phone frequently compared with other citizens.

As a student, its use is indispensable as evident in scholarly responsibilities. With lighter and more complicated versions being invented, it has continued to gain popularity among students.

My phone has a tracking contrivance through which it can be traced when lost, and can locate exactly where an individual is through GPRS, helping others tell my exact location.

Anything which is dominant transforms the social order; the cell phone has dwarfed the impact of other inventions like the TV. Everybody will find this device to be necessary for routine processes.

My mobile phone is a gadget which has profoundly influenced my daily activities; however, the cell phone has its disadvantages.

Privacy is not guaranteed as anybody can determine my location without my will; furthermore, its injurious health effects may discourage an individual from owning a handset.

In this world of constantly advancing expertise and competition, I foresee more features being added to this object and greater technology to reduce its health effects. Its benefits are more than the disadvantages in several aspects. This object remains vital to my livelihood.

This is the question:

These days, cell (mobile) phones and the internet are very important to the ways in which people relate to one another socially.

Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Analysing the Question

This is a type of question that has appeared in the IELTS test a few times:

  • The impacts of technology on the way we communicate with each other

With IELTS essay questions, you always need to note carefully exactly what you are being asked to write about.

In this case it is about cell / mobile phones and the internet . So you must write about both . Sometimes an essay may just ask you about one or the other.

This is also important in this cell phone essay:

  • 'The way in which people communicate with each other socially'

You are  not  being asked about work situations but social situations. So you should  not  talk about how these types of technology have impacted on organisations or workers.

You are also being asked if there are  more advantages or disadvantages . So you must clearly state your opinion on this and also write about both in your cell phone essay (as the suggestion is that there are both).

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Cell Phone Essay Model Answer

It is rare these days to find someone who does not communicate and interact with others through a cell phone or the internet as they are widespread throughout society. I believe that the benefits of this development outweigh the drawbacks.

One main negative consequence of this development is that people may have become disconnected in relation to conversing with each other face-to-face. People now tend to use their cell phones or the internet to communicate, but rather than actually speaking, they send a message. Some of the most popular applications are WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Line, all of which encourage messaging. The result of this is that people may lack the benefits of engaging with others in conversation and the closeness this brings.

Despite this, there are several important advantages as well. Firstly, the internet and cell phones mean that people can stay connected however far away they are from each other. For instance, these days, many people live in different countries or go travelling in different countries. Cell phones and the internet mean that parents can easily keep in touch with their children who are on holiday and people who immigrate to live abroad can easily communicate with their loved ones when needed. In addition to this, the internet means that people also interact with strangers and increase their knowledge of other cultures because through such things as Facebook, people connect to all sorts of people around the world, becoming friends and also discussing and exchanging knowledge.

In conclusion, although a disadvantage of the internet and cell phones is the lack of face-to-face conversation, they have improved the way we can stay in contact with loved ones and exchange ideas with new people. Overall then, this is a positive development for society.

There are advantages and disadvantages to mobile phones. First, let’s discuss the positive aspects. Our mobile phones facilitate easy communication with friends and family. With our phones, we may use the internet to discover new things as well. With their maps, they make it easy for us to locate our route, and we can even snap photos with them.

However, there are also some drawbacks. Overuse of phones by some individuals can be problematic. It might cause eye pain or even make it difficult to fall asleep. Furthermore, excessive phone use might cause us to lose focus when driving or walking, which is risky.

Thus, we must use our phones responsibly. It’s important to remember to take pauses and not use them excessively. Similar to consuming candy, moderation is key when it comes to this. Utilizing our phones sensibly may make them enjoyable and beneficial. However, we must exercise caution so as not to allow them to cause us issues.

With so many benefits, mobile phones have become an essential part of our life. They facilitate communication and let us stay in touch with loved ones no matter where we are or when we want. Additionally, mobile phones offer instant access to information, which keeps us up to date on global events. They are also useful for navigation, taking pictures to save memories, and even handling our money using mobile banking.

But there are also some disadvantages to these advantages. Overuse of a phone can become addictive, diverting our attention and decreasing our productivity. Extended periods of screen usage can lead to health problems like strained eyes and disturbed sleep cycles. Other drawbacks include privacy issues and the possibility of cyberbullying, which emphasise how crucial it is to use mobile phones properly.

In conclusion, even while mobile phones are incredibly beneficial for communication, information access, and convenience, it is important to consider the possible risks they may pose to one’s health, privacy, and general well-being. Maintaining a balance in the use of mobile phones is crucial to maximise their benefits while minimising their drawbacks.
