Take a look at what is being talked about in those topics: the most recent research, something that has to do with them, and so on.

Check to see if you can find information that looks like it could help.

Students who pursue a sponsored project work in groups to complete a consulting project for a small or large business or nonprofit organization. Students conduct research and analysis and work to implement findings in order to improve their sponsor’s information systems practices. Some of our recent sponsors include Larry H. Miller Auto Group, Utah Transit Authority (UTA), Workers Compensation Fund, TwitchTV, Extra Space Storage, and various departments at the University of Utah.

Sample Project: Automating Data Analytics

Project Summary: The objective was to automate a monthly Excel scorecard used by staff and executives at Ace Intermountain Recycling. The project team delivered a scorecard that was easily accessible via a web browser displaying the information and metrics that were originally calculated manually. The new scorecard can be accessed at any time, is continuously updated, and easy for management to maintain.

Sponsoring Company Background:  Ace Intermountain Recycling Center (AIRC) operates transfer stations for recycled materials, green waste, and other garbage in the Salt Lake Valley and surrounding areas. The AIRC scorecard built by this project accumulates different metrics, allowing management to easily view revenue, costs, and other productivity trends.

Project Timeline: Sponsored capstone projects span two semesters. The first semester is used for project selection and planning. The project is executed in the next semester (about 30 weeks total).

Project Planning and Execution: The main technologies used were SQL, Microsoft Power BI, Python, and REST APIs. The first phase of the project execution was dedicated to creating data connections between the server and each data source; the next phase was cleaning and transforming the raw data into usable datasets with Power BI. SharePoint was utilized to present the dashboard with all its metrics in one central location.

Students interested in completing a professional certification can earn credit for doing so through the capstone course. Students can choose from a number of mid- to upper-level certification options that are approved to meet this requirement. Certification exams are completed individually, though students are encouraged to work together when studying. Exam and study material costs are paid by the student. Some certification options may have pre- or co-requisite MSIS course requirements.

There are three primary levels of certification:

Capstone Project Topics

As a student, one of the most important tasks you’ll face is choosing a capstone project topic. A capstone project is a comprehensive assignment that requires you to demonstrate the knowledge and skills you’ve gained throughout your academic program.

It is a crucial aspect of your academic career as it can help you stand out in the job market, demonstrate your readiness for your profession, and showcase your ability to work independently. In this blog, we’ll explore everything you need to know about capstone projects and provide you with 55+ capstone project topics to help get you started.

What is a Capstone Project?

Table of Contents

A capstone project is a culmination of your academic program. It requires you to integrate and apply the knowledge and skills you’ve gained throughout your academic journey. Capstone projects come in different forms and formats, including research papers, presentations, case studies, and hands-on projects.

Explain Significance of a Capstone Project

A Capstone project is a culminating academic project that is typically required of students nearing the end of their studies. The significance of a Capstone project lies in the fact that it provides an opportunity for students to integrate and apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired throughout their studies to solve a real-world problem or address a specific issue.

Here are some reasons why Capstone projects are significant:

1. Integration of Knowledge

Capstone projects require students to integrate and apply knowledge gained across multiple courses in their program. This integration of knowledge allows students to see the connections between different subject areas and to apply a holistic approach to problem-solving.

2. Real-world Experience

Capstone projects often involve working on a project for a real client or addressing a real-world issue. This provides students with valuable experience in working with real clients and stakeholders, conducting research, and applying theoretical concepts to practical problems.

3. Demonstration of Skills

Capstone projects provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate the skills they have acquired over the course of their studies. This includes critical thinking, problem-solving, research, and communication skills.

Career Preparation

Capstone projects can help students prepare for their future careers by providing them with practical experience, networking opportunities, and a portfolio of work to showcase to potential employers.

In summary, Capstone projects are significant because they provide students with an opportunity to integrate and apply their knowledge, gain real-world experience, demonstrate their skills, and prepare for their future careers.

Elements of Capstone Project

Capstone projects can vary depending on the academic discipline, institution, and level of study. However, there are several common elements that are typically included in a Capstone project:

The Capstone project begins with the selection of a topic, which is often related to the student’s area of study or research interest. The topic should be significant, relevant, and feasible to research and complete within the given timeframe.

2. Proposal

The student is required to submit a proposal that outlines the problem or issue they aim to address, the research questions, methodology, and expected outcomes. The proposal is typically reviewed and approved by a faculty advisor or a Capstone committee.

3. Literature Review

Students are required to conduct a comprehensive literature review of existing research related to the chosen topic. This helps to provide a theoretical foundation for the project and identify gaps in existing research that the Capstone project aims to address.

4. Research Methodology

Students need to identify and apply appropriate research methods and techniques to collect data and analyze it. This could involve conducting surveys, interviews, experiments, or analyzing existing data sources.

5. Results And Analysis

Students need to present the results of their research in a clear and organized manner, including data analysis, graphs, and charts, which are used to support their findings.

6. Conclusion And Recommendations

Students need to provide a conclusion that summarizes the findings and recommendations for future research and practice. This is typically presented in a written report or a presentation to a Capstone committee.

7. Reflection

Finally, students are often required to reflect on the Capstone project experience, including the challenges and successes encountered during the project. This reflection allows students to critically evaluate their work and identify areas for improvement.

Information Management Systems Capstone

"I always enjoy meeting students in person when we gather for our weekend session on campus. Three things happen during this special weekend: 1) a significant amount of new course material gets learned and discussed; 2) students start to collaborate on team projects where they bring their own academic knowledge, unique talents, and industry experiences; and 3) the social bonding occurs that is so crucial for the college experience: people find new friends and, of course, buy Harvard shirts at the Coop. Just to illustrate the professional make-up of our class: there’re two Chief Information Officers of large companies, three Technology Directors, a tech startup founder, an enterprise architect with 40 years of experience, and a European college professor." — Zoya Kinstler, instructor.

For the Information Management System capstone you work with an international team of professionals to select an enterprise-scale business problem and develop a digital technology solution.  You work in a team to research current trends, identify a problem, plan a solution, and present a proposal to an assembled faculty panel.

The project requirements differ slightly between the two IMS capstone courses currently offered. ISMT E-599 focuses on the Digital Enterprise, while ISMT E-599a concentrates on Information Management. Both are taught in a similar format but explore different subject matters. For more course specific information, see ISMT E-599 or ISMT E-599a .

Course Sequencing

You ordinarily take the capstone as your final, one and only remaning degree requirement. At a minimum, you need to have completed at least 36 credits, including all the core degree requirements, to be eligible for capstone. The capstone is offered online with a mandatory weekend on campus during the fall and spring term. In summer, the capstone is offered as an on-campus course during the intensive, seven-week session.

  • Previous Capstone Projects

The MIS Capstone course consists of a student-executed Information Systems design project providing an in-depth, practical experience. The central challenge for Management Information Systems professionals is to productively design, implement, and manage information systems in a timely fashion. Management Information Systems challenges typically require an integrated and balanced set of perspectives, techniques, and methods to be effectively dealt with. The capstone course addresses that need by focusing on a real-life information systems design and development project that students execute using an Agile methodology. The project will typically cover the conceptualization, analysis, design, and production of a working, functional prototype of the system that serves as a proof of concept.

Students are expected to bring knowledge from the MIS core courses, their chosen electives, and their own experience into this course. Students must apply their knowledge, practice with different tools and techniques, examine a variety of points of view, critique the readings and each others' views, stretch their thinking, and ultimately to learn how to be effective MIS professionals. Students will finish the course with a clear recognition that there is no "one right way" to engineer and implement an information system.

Current Capstone Projects

Since its inception in 2008, the MIS capstone class has been successful in delivering working prototypes to the clients. The projects taken up by the capstone class are community-based projects aimed at helping the local community. Some of the projects that the MIS Capstone class has taken up are listed below.

Review Of Related Literature And Related Studies

This chapter presents a number of previous studies and researchers about student information system. It also includes other sources of reference that are perceived to have significant bearing on this study.

Systems analysis and design, as performed by systems analyst, seeks to analyze data input or data flow systematically, processing or transforming data, data storage, and information output within context of a particular business. Furthermore, systems analysis and design is used to analyze, design, and implement improvements in the functionality of business that can be accomplished through the use of computerized information systems.[1]

Numerous companies offer different kinds of student information system that is capable of recording and providing access to student information. A kind of student information management system is Chancery SMS by Chancery Software Ltd. Chancery SMS is a web-based solution that runs on the Windows 2000 Server platform. It can be hosted in a central location by a district or a Regional Service Center. Each school site connects to the application through the Internet or Intranet using a standard web browser.[2]

Educational institutions are under constant pressure to demonstrate both willingness and capacity to incorporate the latest developments in student information systems along with communications technology supporting various teaching ways. Asserts that SIS process within such technological sophistication does create precise knowledge edge, that such SIS application can be appealing to students and to the academic faculty as well as the parents. Thus, believing that technology is the repository of the bulk of the information that underpins society’s major enterprises and concerns and the medium of communication through which SIS interact with one another. [3]

Another kind of student information management system would be the Centre by the Miller Group. It includes capabilities such as: Student screens that include all the critical information necessary for reports and decision-making, provide quick access to demographic information, and also assign email addresses, admittance to the system and passwords. [4] These student information management systems are efficient in handling student data, any of which can be utilized by the school registrar of Philippine Science High School – Central Mindanao Campus, but these Student information management systems are only available in countries such as United States of America and Canada and not yet in the Philippines and the purchase of these software will cost a high price.A local variant of a student information system, the Student Record System (SRS) for Philippine Science High School – Central Mindanao Campus (PSHS-CMC), was developed by Taddie Fel L. Dagaerag and company (2002).

SRS was designed to assist the registrar of PSHS-CMC but proper attention for the smooth transition from the previous system to the SRS was not given so the system encountered problems, which require major revisions.[4]

According to the school former registrar, Ms. Shiela M. Preagido (Registrar PSHS-CMC, year 2005), “…report on grade is not that usable, unless another program will be made that can copy grades from the summary grades sheets,” therefore, rendering the SRS unusable for the present. There are still insufficient services offered by any software solutions company in the Philippines that can provide the same kinds of functionality on a system with lower  cost compared to foreign products. Such student information system would cost in the range from 75,000 pesos to 150,000 pesos. [4]

Student information system or SIS incurs such application software designed for educational establishments to manage student data. Student information systems provide capabilities for entering student test and other assessment scores, building student schedules, tracking student attendance as well as managing many other student-related data needs within the institution university. Thus, many of these systems applied in the Philippines can be scaled to different levels of activity and can be configured by their home institutions to meet local needs.[3]

The ultimate purpose of this project is to provide the University with an information system that will address the current and future needs of students, staff and faculty. The SIS project has a web site with more information for faculty, staff and students.[5]

This survey collected annual information from degree-granting universities and colleges in Canada on individual student characteristics and their study programs including gender, age, citizenship, geographic source of student, field of study, level, type of attendance (full-time/part-time and year of graduation). University Student Information System. [6]

The use of the University of Lapland’s student registry is based on laws and regulations. Based on the laws the university gives out information from the registry without students’ consent to Statistics, The Social Insurance Institution of Finland, Student Health Care Foundation YTHS, Employment Office, Student Union LYY and to scientific research. With the student’s consent and staff’s own consideration the university can give out information from the registry for study related purposes and direct marketing. Release conditions are defined when registering for the first time. Students can also change the release conditions in WebOodi. Release of Information from Student Registry. [7]

“Computerized school registration system of Saint Paul University (2003)” by Philip V. Napapan. This software accepts new enrollees, payments, and generates report. The authors of this software uses MS access for database, OBDC for the connection drivers, and MS excel for the reports.[8]

The MSU Preparatory High School keeps its record manually since it exists for more than forty years now. The procedures followed are so time consuming especially in adding, sorting, editing and locating students’ file. Besides, when the administration generate reports oftentimes entails access to each student file which requires a lot of effort and time.[9]

“High school enrollment system of Dipolog City (2004-2005)” by Vincent J. Jamero. The high school enrollment system is for curriculum based high school institution. It includes registration, students and teachers scheduling, student billing and other high school information management staff.[10]

Synthesis of the Study

The related literature and related studies discusses the importance and concepts of managing records as: creation filing for studies on computerized system. Almost all of the researchers recommend the design, development and implementation of computerized system to facilitate and improve information processes and decision making and changing from a manual system can be minimize if not eradicated. And the quality of service when it comes to accuracy of reports, fast input, and data security can be greatly improved.

The researchers found out that the most permanent problem areas of manual system are slow data processing in accuracy of reports, time consuming, bulky workload, and loss of data.

Research Methodology and Procedures

This presents the methodology used by the researchers in gathering data needed for the accomplishment of the study in order to apply the different methodologies and procedures properly. It will present the following; the research design, data gathering instrument, data analysis tools and development tools.

Research Methodology Tools

The researchers primarily used descriptive method of research to fully expand and understand the flow of data gathered, issues concerning the status of the existing system. The proposed student information system for ISU-E laboratory high school of San Fabian Echague, Isabela, was conducted to design and implementation efficient and secured new system to be designed and implemented.

Development method was used to produce the proposed system. The researchers used the system development life cycle(SDLC) as a tool, model and structured approach to information system development that guides all the processes involved from all its initial study to maintain is finished application.

System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) Tools

Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is a process used by a  systems analyst  to develop an  information system , including requirements, validation,  training , and user (stakeholder) ownership. Any SDLC should result in a high quality system that meets or exceeds customer expectations, reaches completion within time and cost estimates, works effectively andefficiently in the current and planned Information Technology  infrastructure , and is inexpensive to maintain and cost-effective to enhance. Computer systems are complex and often (especially with the recent riseof  Service-Oriented Architecture ) link multiple traditional systems potentially supplied by different software vendors. To manage this level of complexity, a number of SDLC models or methodologies have been created, such as “ waterfall “; “ spiral “; “ Agile software development “; “ rapid prototyping “; “ incremental “; and “synchronize and stabilize”.

Preliminary Phases

The following techniques were used by the researchers in order to gather pertinent data and information necessary in the design and development of the proposed system.

Questionnaire Method. Is a written or printed form of gathering information on some subjects consisting of a set of questions distributed to and filled up by the respondents. Questionnaire method was used to evaluate the overall impact of the proposed system to its benefactor. With the result the researchers were  able to confirm that the proposed system is timely implemented.

Interview Methods. The researchers made use of this technique of collecting data in order to verify and confirm information. This is a method where researchers are able to get ideas and comments pertaining to the design and structure of the proposed system. It was also through interview where the researchers were able to understand the tecnhiques and strategies used by the manual system.

Observation Method. This method of gathering data further strengthened the concept of the study. Through this method, the researchers were able to observe the procedures in the traditional method and a computerized system. By this study, the researchers know how the procedures in using the manual based.

Library Method. The researchers visited the library to scan some books, reference and thesis in order to understand better the study and be able to locate some basis in the development of the proposed system.By this study, the researchers were able to gather data and information through the use of library.

Internet Method. The researchers browse through internet sites and other related links in search of valuable information vital for the conduct of the study and additional information regarding the development of the proposed system. By this study the  researchers browse through internet to gather some information.

Senior project spotlight: ben schroeder, a robotic hand attachment for spacesuits.

Harvard SEAS senior Ben Schroeder holding a robotic hand attachment built for a senior capstone project

For a senior capstone project, Ben Schroeder designed a robotic hand attachment for spacesuits

Engineering Design Projects (ES 100), the capstone course at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), challenges seniors to engineer a creative solution to a real-world problem.

Robotic Assistance for Astronaut Dexterity (RAAD)

Advisor: Rob Howe

Please give a brief summary of your project.

RAAD is a robotic hand/wrist meant to attach to spacesuits for astronauts to use during extravehicular activities, or spacewalks. The gloves worn on spacesuits are thick and stiff, which fatigue and injure astronauts as they use their hands across a seven-hour space walk. Instead of a glove, astronauts wear RAAD as a pressurized chamber in which their hand can sit unencumbered. From there they control a robotic hand to perform tasks remotely without the fatigue imposed by a suit glove.

How did you come up with this idea for your final project?

I've been interested in crewed spaceflight and how to design aerospace technology around the needs of humans. The use of our hands is so fundamental, I was astonished that the current solutions are still so limiting, if not harmful, to the astronauts.

Is there a real-world challenge that this project addresses?

Spacesuit gloves are designed to protect the astronaut's hands from the inhospitable conditions of space. However, current solutions are focused on how to make an existing glove design inhibit the hand as little as possible. RAAD entirely abandons the traditional form factor of a glove, replacing the hand's direct functionality with robotics.

What was the timeline of your project?

I came up with the concept of RAAD near the end of the spring of my junior year, and spent time during my internship at SpaceX talking to experts in spacesuits and human-interfacing hardware design to better understand how to design for astronauts. I then spent the fall working on technical specifications and preliminary design. January through March was dedicated to prototyping, construction, and testing.

What part of the project proved the most challenging?

Rather than one specific challenge, I think the most challenging component of the project was the number of different subsystems that had to work in concert to form a cohesive final product. RAAD includes a robotic wrist, multiple tools, off-the-shelf components, printed structural elements, inertial sensors, servo motors, all within one assembly.

What part of the project did you enjoy the most

While it represented the most intensive work throughout the project, the prototyping and building phase felt the most exciting. It was deeply gratifying to see models and ideas that existed only on a computer or in my brain slowly manifest physically before me. While design has its own level of creativity and excitement, there is a visceral joy to holding something you've made in your hands.

What did you learn, or skills did you gain, through this project?

It sounds cliché, but a major goal of this project was to push myself out of my fields of comfort that my past engineering experience had afforded me. Much of my academic and professional experience in engineering has dealt in structural loads and thermodynamics. I chose a robotics project specifically because I knew it would demand a level of confidence in electrical systems, software, and moving mechanisms that I didn't have going in. RAAD's human-interfacing nature also gave me the opportunity to learn how to conform hardware to the human body, measure human factors (such as fatigue or dexterity), and mimic bodily movements through robotics. In this sense, I got to step outside the structures world and play as an electrical engineer, software developer, bioengineer, and roboticist for this project. Not only did that experience increase my confidence in those specific fields, it affirmed for me that labels I put on myself as a "certain type" of engineer are artificial and self-imposed.
