3.2.1: Solving Exponential Equations

Exponential Equations

When you were first learning equations, you learned the rule that whatever you do to one side of an equation, you must also do to the other side so that the equation stays in balance. The basic techniques of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing both sides of an equation worked to solve almost all equations up until now. With logarithms, you have more tools to isolate a variable. Consider the following equation and ask yourself: why is x=3? Logically it makes sense that if the bases match, then the exponents must match as well, but how can it be shown for examples like this one?

1.79898 2x =1.79898 6

Solving Exponential Equations

A common technique for solving equations with unknown variables in exponents is to take the log of the desired base of both sides of the equation. Then, you can use properties of logs to simplify and solve the equation.

Take the following equation. To solve for t, you should first simplify the expression as much as possible and then take the natural log of both sides.

\(\ \begin{aligned} 9,000&=300 \cdot \frac{(1.06)^{t}-1}{0.06} & \\ 30 &=\frac{(1.06)^{t}-1}{0.06} \\ 1.8 &=(1.06)^{t}-1 \\ 2.8 &=1.06^{t} \\ \ln 2.8 &=\ln \left(1.06^{t}\right)=t \cdot \ln (1.06) \\ t &=\frac{\ln 2.8}{\ln 1.06} \approx 17.67 \text { years } \end{aligned}\)

It does not matter what base you use in this situation as long as you use the same base on both sides. Choosing natural log allows you to use a calculator to finish the problem.

Note that this type of equation is common in financial mathematics. The equation above represents the unknown amount of time it will take you to save $9,000 in a savings account if you save $300 at the end of each year in an account that earns 6% annual compound interest.

The other good base to use is base 10. When solving the following equation for x: 16 x =25, you will need to use a calculator to get the final answer and your calculator can handle base 10 as well. First take the log of both sides. Then, use log properties and your calculator to help.

\(\ \begin{aligned} 16^{x} &=25 \\ \log 16^{x} &=\log 25 \\ x \log 16 &=\log 25 \\ x &=\frac{\log 25}{\log 16} \\ x &=1.16 \end{aligned}\)

Earlier, you were asked how to show that if the bases match in an equation, the exponents should match. In the equation, logs can be used to reduce the equation to 2x=6.

Take the log of both sides and use the property of exponentiation of logs to bring the exponent out front.

\(\ \begin{aligned} \log 1.79898^{2 x} &=\log 1.79898^{6} \\ 2 x \cdot \log 1.79898 &=6 \cdot \log 1.79898 \\ 2 x &=6 \\ x &=3 \end{aligned}\)

Solve the following equation for all possible values of x: (x+1) x−4 −1=0

(x+1) x−4 −1=0

(x+1) x−4 =1

Case 1 is that x+1 is positive in which case you can take the log of both sides.

\(\ \begin{array}{c} \log (x+1)^{(x-4)}=\log 1 \\ (x-4) \cdot \log (x+1)=0 \\ x-4=0 \text { or } \log (x+1)=0 \\ x=4 \text { or }(x+1)=10^{0}=1 \\ \quad x=4,0 \end{array}\)

Note that log1=0

Case 2 is that (x+1) is negative 1 and raised to an even power. This happens when x=−2.

\(\ \begin{aligned} (x+1)^{(x-4)} &=1 \\ (-2+1)^{(-2-4)}-1 &=(-1)^{-6}-1 \\ &=\frac{1}{(-1)^{6}}-1 \\ &=0 \end{aligned}\)

The reason why this exercise is included is because you should not fall into the habit of assuming that you can take the log of both sides of an equation. It is only valid when the argument is strictly positive. For example, log(−2+1) (−2−4) =log(−1) is not possible.

Light intensity, measured in lumens, can be described by the relationship between i for intensity and d for depth in feet as it travels at specific depths of water in a swimming pool. What is the intensity of light at 10 feet?

\(\ \log \left(\frac{i}{12}\right)=-0.0145 \cdot d\)

Given d=10, solve for i measured in lumens.

\(\ \begin{aligned} \log \left(\frac{i}{12}\right) &=-0.0145 \cdot d \\ \log \left(\frac{i}{12}\right) &=-0.0145 \cdot 10 \\ \log \left(\frac{i}{12}\right) &=-0.145 \\ \left(\frac{i}{12}\right) &=10^{-0.145} \\ i &=12 \cdot 10^{-0.145} \approx 8.594 \end{aligned}\)

Solve the following equation for all possible values of x.

\(\ \frac{e^{x}-e^{-x}}{3}=14\)

First solve for e x ,

\(\ \begin{aligned} \frac{e^{x}-e^{-x}}{3} &=14 \\ e^{x}\left(e^{x}-e^{-x}\right) &=(42) e^{x} \\ e^{2 x}-1 &=42 e^{x} \\ \left(e^{x}\right)^{2}-42 e^{x}-1 &=0 \end{aligned}\)

Let u=e x .

\(\ \begin{array}{l} u^{2}-42 u-1=0 \\ u=\frac{-(-42) \pm \sqrt{(-42)^{2}-4 \cdot 1 \cdot(-1)}}{2 \cdot 1}=\frac{42 \pm \sqrt{1768}}{2} \approx 42.023796,-0.0237960 \end{array}\)

Note that the negative result is extraneous because ex must be greater than zero, so you only proceed in solving for x for one result.

\(\ \begin{aligned} e^{x} & \approx 42.023796 \\ x & \approx \ln 42.023796 \approx 3.738 \end{aligned}\)

Solve the following equation for all possible values of x: (log 2 x) 2 −log2x 7 =−12.

In calculus it is common to use a small substitution to simplify the problem and then substitute back later. In this case let u=log 2 x. Notice that this is a quadratic problem.

\(\ \begin{aligned} \left(\log _{2} x\right)^{2}-7 \log _{2} x+12 &=0 \\ u^{2}-7 u+12 &=0 \\ (u-3)(u-4) &=0 \\ u &=3,4 \end{aligned}\)

Now substitute back and solve for x in each case.

\(\ \begin{array}{l} \log _{2} x=3 \leftrightarrow 2^{3}=x=8 \\ \log _{2} x=4 \leftrightarrow 2^{4}=x=16 \end{array}\)

Solve each equation for x. Round each answer to three decimal places.

3. 12 4x =1020

4. 7 3x =2400

5. 2 x+1 −5=22

6. 5x+12 x =5x+7

7. 2 x+1 =2 2x+3

8. 3 x+3 =9 x+1

9. 2 x+4 =5 x

10. 13⋅8 0.2x =546

11. b x =c+a

12. 32 x =0.94−.12

Solve each log equation by using log properties and rewriting as an exponential equation.

13. log 3 x+log 3 5=2

14. 2logx=log8+log5−log10

15. log 9 x=\(\ \frac{3}{2}\)

Listen: we know homework isn’t fun, but it is a good way to reinforce the ideas and concepts you’ve learned in class. But what if you’re really struggling with your homework assignments?

If you’ve looked online for a little extra help with your take-home assignments, you’ve probably stumbled across websites claiming to provide the homework help and answers students need to succeed . But can homework help sites really make a difference? And if so, which are the best homework help websites you can use?

Below, we answer these questions and more about homework help websites–free and paid. We’ll go over:

  • The basics of homework help websites
  • The cost of homework help websites
  • The five best homework websites out there
  • The pros and cons of using these websites for homework help
  • The line between “learning” and “cheating” when using online homework help
  • Tips for getting the most out of a homework help website

So let’s get started!

The Basics About Homework Help Websites–Free and Paid

Homework help websites are designed to help you complete your homework assignments, plain and simple.

What Makes a Homework Help Site Worth Using

Most of the best sites allow users to ask questions and then provide an answer (or multiple possible answers) and explanation in seconds. In some instances, you can even send a photo of a particular assignment or problem instead of typing the whole thing out!

Homework help sites also offer more than just help answering homework questions. Common services provided are Q&A with experts, educational videos, lectures, practice tests and quizzes, learning modules, math solving tools, and proofreading help. Homework help sites can also provide textbook solutions (i.e. answers to problems in tons of different textbooks your school might be using), one-on-one tutoring, and peer-to-peer platforms that allow you to discuss subjects you’re learning about with your fellow students.

And best of all, nearly all of them offer their services 24/7, including tutoring!

What You Should Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of scam sites out there willing to prey on desperate students. Before you sign up for any service, make sure you read reviews to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

A word to the wise: the more a company advertises help that veers into the territory of cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. The best homework help websites are going to help you learn the concepts you’ll need to successfully complete your homework on your own. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” a little later!)

body-gold-piggy-bank-money

You don't need a golden piggy bank to use homework help websites. Some provide low or no cost help for students like you!

How Expensive Are the Best Homework Help Websites?

First of all, just because a homework help site costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. Likewise, just because a homework help website is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best websites, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

When it comes to paid homework help services, the prices vary pretty widely depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to $150 dollars per month, with the most expensive services offering several hours of one-on-one tutoring with a subject expert per month.

The 5 Best Homework Help Websites

So, what is the best homework help website you can use? The answer is that it depends on what you need help with.

The best homework help websites are the ones that are reliable and help you learn the material. They don’t just provide answers to homework questions–they actually help you learn the material.

That’s why we’ve broken down our favorite websites into categories based on who they’re best for . For instance, the best website for people struggling with math might not work for someone who needs a little extra help with science, and vice versa.

Keep reading to find the best homework help website for you!

Best Paid Homework Help Site: Chegg

  • Price: $14.95 to $19.95 per month
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

This service has three main parts . The first is Chegg Study, which includes textbook solutions, Q&A with subject experts, flashcards, video explanations, a math solver, and writing help. The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school.

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects.

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers.

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

  • Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want
  • Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help.

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter!

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!

body-studtypool-logo

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

  • Best for: Science homework help
  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

Homework help websites can be a great resource if you’re struggling in a subject, or even if you just want to make sure that you’re really learning and understanding topics and ideas that you’re interested in. But, there are some possible drawbacks if you don’t use these sites responsibly.

We’ll go over the good–and the not-so-good–aspects of getting online homework help below.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Websites

First, let’s take a look at the benefits.

#1: Better Grades Beyond Homework

This is a big one! Getting outside help with your studies can improve your understanding of concepts that you’re learning, which translates into better grades when you take tests or write essays.

Remember: homework is designed to help reinforce the concepts you learned in class. If you just get easy answers without learning the material behind the problems, you may not have the tools you need to be successful on your class exams…or even standardized tests you’ll need to take for college.

#2: Convenience

One of the main reasons that online homework help is appealing is because it’s flexible and convenient. You don’t have to go to a specific tutoring center while they’re open or stay after school to speak with your teacher. Instead, you can access helpful resources wherever you can access the internet, whenever you need them.

This is especially true if you tend to study at off hours because of your extracurriculars, work schedule, or family obligations. Sites that offer 24/7 tutoring can give you the extra help you need if you can’t access the free resources that are available at your school.

#3: Variety

Not everyone learns the same way. Maybe you’re more of a visual learner, but your teacher mostly does lectures. Or maybe you learn best by listening and taking notes, but you’re expected to learn something just from reading the textbook .

One of the best things about online homework help is that it comes in a variety of forms. The best homework help sites offer resources for all types of learners, including videos, practice activities, and even one-on-one discussions with real-life experts.

This variety can also be a good thing if you just don’t really resonate with the way a concept is being explained (looking at you, math textbooks!).

body_stophand

Not so fast. There are cons to homework help websites, too. Get to know them below!

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Websites

Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of online homework help.

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option.

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up.

No matter which site you choose to use, make sure you research and read reviews before you sign up–especially if it’s a paid service!

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get.

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating.

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help Websites for You

Now that you know some of our favorite homework help websites, free and paid, you can start doing some additional research on your own to decide which services might work best for you! Here are some top tips for choosing a homework help website.

Tip 1: Decide How You Learn Best

Before you decide which site or sites you’re going to use for homework help, y ou should figure out what kind of learning style works for you the most. Are you a visual learner? Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With

Just because a homework help site is good overall doesn’t mean that it’s equally good for every subject. If you only need help in math, choose a site that specializes in that area. But if history is where you’re struggling, a site that specializes in math won’t be much help. So make sure to choose a site that you know provides high-quality help in the areas you need it most.

Tip 3: Decide How Much One-On-One Help You Need

This is really about cost-effectiveness. If you learn well on your own by reading and watching videos, a free site like Khan Academy is a good choice. But if you need actual tutoring, or to be able to ask questions and get personalized answers from experts, a paid site that provides that kind of service may be a better option.

Tip 4: Set a Budget

If you decide you want to go with a paid homework help website, set a budget first . The prices for sites vary wildly, and the cost to use them can add up quick.

Tip 5: Read the Reviews

Finally, it’s always a good idea to read actual reviews written by the people using these homework sites. You’ll learn the good, the bad, and the ugly of what the users’ experiences have been. This is especially true if you intend to subscribe to a paid service. You’ll want to make sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

The downsides of free homework help..

How often do use assistance of the Internet in doing your homework? We bet, it's your daily routine to open a browser and start looking for solutions. Do you think the strangers on the other side of the screen will provide necessary information for your math homework help? Unlikely! After one successful task there might be a sad outcome. We want you to be cautious about the websites you look for assistance, that's why we have gathered the disadvantages of asking Google for free homework help.

First, and the main downside is the inability to check the result. People helping you with your task might not know the answers themselves. And what assistance would you get in this case? Wrong answers!

Second, it's the proficiency of the strangers on the other side of the screen. Who are they? College professors who came to provide homework help for free? Or just students like you who might not be able to cope with a simple task. They might not now anything about the subject, or might be way too self-confident and give you wrong answers.

Think twice before using the help from these people. In the next part of the article we describe the most popular sources of homework assistance and give our honest opinion about them.

The best websites for homework help.

When a student is looking for help he always (no exaggeration!) expects it to be free. Of course, being a college student always means being tight on budget and looking for the ways to save money even more. But it should be related to college homework help. Sadly, there are thousands of examples when a bad homework resulted in bad grades, and a poor student had to learn more to pass the exam. That's why we don't recommend to look for answers on the websites like Reddit or Chegg. Why? We explain below.

Chegg homework help is a paid service. You need to buy a monthly subscription to use it. Is it worth it? Depends on your professor. If the tasks you get are strictly from a textbook, then it might be good. To cope with a creative teachers this website has nothing to offer.

The same goes for Reddit homework help. It might be useful when you're looking for solutions on a standard task, the one that dozens of people are struggling with as well. There's nothing these services can offer if you're homework is unique and created by a teacher himself. What to do in this case? Read our recommendations below.

We recommend to try it!

There's an easy and cheap solution that will help you succeed in your studies. A personal assistance with homework created just for your tasks. No need to scroll pages looking for similar tasks and subjects, no need to copy from the screen and guess, if the results are correct. Professionals will perform the task for you! All you have to do is to provide it and enjoy a personalized approach and high quality service. After that you'll never come back to Reddit in search of answers!

5 Ways to Work at Home Helping Kids With Homework

I f you are looking for a way to earn money remotely helping kids with homework, I have a list you will want to check out. There are several companies now that pay tutors and teachers to help their clients (kids, teens, and in some cases college students) with homework.

Offering homework help online in many cases is just side money, but it may appeal to you if you've ever done any tutoring or teaching or just happen to be academically gifted. And being able to offer the help online is a plus and far more convenient than having to travel to the home of a student, or to a school.

Below I've listed five companies that are almost always seeking people to provide homework help in a variety of different subjects, entirely online.

Good luck if you apply for anything!

5 Ways to Work at Home Offering Homework Help

1 – studypool.

After you apply as a tutor on the Studypool website, you can then browse the site for homework questions you think you'd be qualified to answer. You get to request a fee for the questions you're interested in helping with, and the students can decide whether or not they want to work with you based on what you are charging.

Once you submit your answer and the student accepts it, you will receive your pay.

You can log in on Studypool and work whenever you want, although there will be certain times of year that there aren't as many questions to help with (summer and the Christmas holidays).

2 – GeeklyHelp

GeeklyHelp specializes in homework help for college students. The students send out help requests and wait for a tutor “match” based on GeeklyHelp's AI algorithm designed to find the perfect tutor to help with their problem.

You will chat with the student you've been assigned to one-on-one until the problem is solved, and then you receive your payment.

According to the site, most tutors working with them earn on average $20/hourly. Payments are made weekly via PayPal, Payoneer, or Skrill, and you're free to choose your own hours.

You have to apply and prove your competence in the subjects you claim to be an expert in prior to acceptance.

3 – SchoolSolver

SchoolSolver is the most basic-looking of all the options I've listed for you. Just click on “Answer Questions” when you visit the site, and you'll be presented with a list of homework questions students need help with, along with the amount they are willing to pay for assistance.

If you know the answer to the question, you can add it, but the buyer cannot see the answer unless they pay. This helps guarantee you get paid for your help.

I do see a lot of room for error here and students possibly claiming your answer isn't good so they don't have to pay, but then using it anyway … so just be a little cautious with this one.

Payments are made via PayPal. There do not appear to be any requirements to sign up and start answering questions.

4 – Growing Stars

Growing Stars is a bit more professional. They offer online tutoring services for elementary, middle, and high school students.

Sessions are held online and one-on-one via a whiteboard. You teach the students using the same textbooks they have in school.

There is no mention on the website of what you are paid.

The candidate registration form is located here. You are also asked to select which subject you'd like to teach in.

5 – 24HourAnswers.com

24HourAnswers.com provides online tutoring and homework help services to students for over 400 subjects.

If you are interested in tutoring for 24HourAnswers.com, you will need at least a Master’s degree, but if you’re an exceptional student with at least a Bachelor degree you can still apply with great spoken and written English skills.

Payments are made monthly via ACH Payments, Bank Transfer (International), PayPal and Payoneer.

I hope this helps you if you were looking for some work at home options and ways to earn extra cash helping kids and teens with their homework. Good luck!

Lawmakers release text of $1.2 trillion spending bill as shutdown deadline nears

WASHINGTON — Lawmakers early Thursday morning released the text of a $1.2 trillion government funding bill negotiated by the White House and leaders of both parties to avoid a partial government shutdown this weekend.

President Joe Biden shakes hands with House Speaker Mike Johnson during the State of the Union address at the Capitol on March 7, 2024.

The spending deal , announced Tuesday, includes funding for the departments of Homeland Security, Defense, State, Labor, Health and Human Services and other parts of the government.

Those federal agencies are scheduled to shut down on Saturday if the funding package is not passed by Friday night. President Joe Biden has said he’ll sign the bill, but it’s unclear whether Congress has enough time to pass it before the deadline.

It would take a herculean effort for both chambers to pass the 1,012-page bill before the end of the day on Friday, particularly in the Senate, where all 100 senators would have to agree to speed up consideration to do so.

Funding for DHS, which oversees the politically explosive issue of immigration enforcement, was the most contentious part of the negotiation. It dragged out talks for several extra days after the rest of the appropriations bills had been settled.

It is the last remaining funding package that Congress has to pass this fiscal year, which ends after September. That leaves lawmakers just over six months to begin anew for fiscal year 2025.

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., praised the Homeland Security-related spending provisions and about $20 billion in proposed cuts to the Internal Revenue Service in a statement shortly after the release of the legislative text.

The bipartisan agreement “significantly cuts funding to NGOs that incentivize illegal immigration and increases detention capacity and the number of border patrol agents to match levels in the House-passed appropriations bill and the Secure the Border Act (H.R. 2),” Johnson said in a statement. “While these changes are welcome, only a significant reversal in policy by the President to enforce the law can ultimately secure our border.”

“Overall, during the FY24 appropriations process, House Republicans have achieved significant conservative policy wins, rejected extreme Democrat proposals, and imposed substantial cuts to wasteful agencies and programs while strengthening border security and national defense,” Johnson added.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., put a modicum of distance between his conference and the deal, saying in a statement Tuesday that the DHS component was a product of “negotiations between the Biden administration and House Republicans,” who control the chamber.

Senate Appropriations Chair Patty Murray, D-Wash., touted Democratic gains in the legislation.

“This package will give families some extra breathing room — and help continue America’s historic economic recovery,” she said in a statement. “I am proud to have secured $1 billion more to lower families’ child care costs and help them find pre-K — a critical investment to help tackle the child care crisis that is holding families and our economy back. This bill protects our investments in Americans’ health and in students at every stage of their education.”

After the House passes the bill, the Senate will require unanimous consent to vote quickly.

“Once the House sends us a funding package, I will put it on the floor of the Senate without delay,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said on the floor. “We haven’t had a government shutdown since 2019. There’s no good reason for us to have one this week.”

Schumer warned senators that preventing a shutdown will require them not to engage in “unnecessary partisan dithering.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said, “Congress has secured a path forward to fund the Department of Homeland Security, which will allow us to complete the fiscal year 2024 appropriations process in the coming days.”

“As always, making headway depends on serious cooperation,” he added.

Zach Hyman scores 47th and 48th goals to help Oilers rout Sabres, 8-3

EDMONTON, Alberta — Zach Hyman scored his 47th and 48th goals, the second in Edmonton’s five-goal third period, and the Oilers overcame a two-goal deficit to rout the Buffalo Sabres 8-3 on Thursday night.

Mattias Ekholm had two goals and an assist, Leon Draisaitl added a goal and two assists, Darnell Nurse, Ryan McLeod and Connor Brown also scored and Stuart Skinner made 26 saves. Connor McDavid had four assists, two on Hyman’s goals.

“It is nice that we are winning and producing wins, but I still think there is more there to be had, more urgency,” McDavid said. “Which is a good thing. It’s that time of year when we need to ramp up and get ready to go. We are still playing for positioning and all that, there is still lots to be playing for.”

The Oilers improved to 42-21-4 with their second straight victory. They are 9-1-2 in their last 12.

“What do we have, 15 games left? That’s where you really ramp up your game and you figure out how you’re going to win,” Hyman said. “And I think we have a really good sense of what our identity is and how we’re going to win.”

J.J. Peterka scored twice for Buffalo. Victor Olofsson added a goal and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 31 shots. The Sabres have lost three of four to fall to 33-33-5.

“I don’t really know what to say about that one, it’s obviously a frustrating loss,” Sabres forward Tage Thompson said. “I thought our first and second were good hockey, you go into the third a tie game, chance to win an important hockey game and they get a couple goals and we’re chasing from behind They get another one and then it feels out of reach, now it’s a lot of frustration I think we let creep into our game there at the end.”

Peterka opened the scoring with his 22nd just 1:38 into the game off an Edmonton turnover, and Olofsson made it 2-0 with 3:26 to play in the first period.

Draisaitl got Edmonton on the board on a power play with 1:05 to play in the period for his 35th. The Oilers pulled even 4:26 into the second period whens Ekholm opted to shoot on a two-on-one.

Peterka restored Buffalo’s lead with 3:04 to play in the second, and Hyman tied it with 48 seconds left in the period.

The Oilers took the lead 4:38 into the third period. Nurse’s shot clipped a defender and got past Luukkonen. Troy Stecher got an assist for his first point as an Oiler since arriving from Arizona at the trade deadline.

Ekholm made it 5-3 just 1:02 later, and Hyman netted his second with 4:22 left. McDavid picked up his fourth assist with a pass from behind the goal line out front to Hyman.

The Oilers continued to pour it on with McLeod scoring with 3:02 remaining. Brown followed up with his second of the season, and in his last three games, after ending a 72-game drought that extended back almost two full years on March 13 against Washington.

“If you look at the first, I didn’t really love it,” Ekholm said. “We got in and had a nice chat about it and got out and showed the kind of team we are. Even though the second was a decently even period, I liked our intensity, I liked our checking better and then, obviously, in the third we took over.”

Sabres: At Calgary on Sunday night to complete five-game trip.

Oilers: At Toronto on Saturday night to open three-game trip.
