Adding Udemy Courses to Resume Education Section

Even though the normal convention is to list your most recent educational certifications first, Udemy courses should not go above your University certifications or any additional degrees you have. Instead, it should go below.

To include Udemy certificates in this section of your CV, add the Udemy Name, the name of the course, and the length of the course. You can also add a short description, especially if the name of the course is not clear.

A normal convention is to use bold or italics to highlight your education section. Make sure you maintain consistent formatting with your Udemy courses as well. This will make the section easier to read

After writing several posts about Udemy, one of the most common questions I get asked about is “is Udemy accredited?”.

Because of this, I decided to write this post and once and for all settle this question while also shedding some light on some interesting nuances about accreditation.

Also in this post, I will be covering other aspects of this question such as if Udemy certificates are worth putting on a resume. Let’s get started!

Is Udemy Accredited?

According to Udemy.com, “Udemy is not an accredited institution, and as a result, the certificates cannot be used for formal accreditation.” However, some individual courses do provide CPD or CEU credits that are available upon request from third-party education providers.

So in short, Udemy themselves is not an accredited institution and none of their supplied certificates carry any weight or accreditation.

Unfortunately, this is the case as Udemy has over 100,000 courses on a wide range of topics made by independent teachers with varying knowledge, expertise, credentials, and education. When combining these factors, it would be impossible to accredit each course due to time commitment and cost.

However… Some Udemy Courses Can Get Accreditation

After doing a bit more digging, I actually did find some of the courses on Udemy are actually available for accreditation. Let me explain…

When you do a search for “accreditation” on Udemy, you will get various search results in such topics as life coaching, mindfulness, meditation, CBT, EFT, energy healing, nutrition, and NLP to name a few.

Upon reading more into these types of courses, the teachers/academy also provide their own accredited certificates on top of the existing Udemy certificates.

However, in almost every case, the student themselves have to apply to platforms like the Continuing Professional Development Standards Agency to validate the certificate.

Once an agency recognizes your prior learning, it will distribute the learning credits which will make the non-Udemy certificate accredited from that agency.

While this is a great alternative, one thing to keep in mind that this is only available for certain topics on Udemy which typically have a wide range of standards of accreditations.

Should I Put Udemy Certificates On My Resume

Ok, so you now know that Udemy isn’t accredited and you still want to undertake one of their certificate courses. Now it begs the questions of whether or not you should add a certificate to your resume/CV or to a job position.

From my own personal experience and opinion, I think it is definitely worthwhile adding the completed Udemy course to your resume. Here are the three reasons why I think this is a good thing todo.

• It shows the potential employer that you have gone the extra mile to learn the topic
• It shows that you are committed to the topic and have the discipline to complete the course
• A completed certificate can give you the edge in a wide range of candidates

Can You Get a Job With a Udemy Certificate?

As a continuation of the above question, is it possible to get a job when completing a Udemy course? In short, yes and no.

At its core, Udemy is there to enable you to learn the skills that will enable you to bring value to a company or business. So if you are to commit 100% and undertake various courses, understand the subject matter, and put it into action that gives results. Then yes, Udemy courses can be extremely beneficial to landing that next job.

However, if you are to complete a Udemy course while not concentrating, taking notes, researching further, and becoming competent in a certain topic. Then it is unlikely that you will be able to stand out in an interview.

What Are The Benefits Of Udemy Certificates?

When it comes to the benefits of completing a Udemy course and getting a certificate, you are essentially showing an employer that you are dedicated to improving and updating your skills.

This is particularly helpful if you have picked specific courses that share new skills on the topic, give a refresher, prepare you for an exam, or give you a specialized skill in a technical industry.

So while a certificate of completion is a great accomplishment, the symbolism behind it can sometimes mean more than the piece of paper itself.

If you want to increase your hiring chances, make sure you complete a course and acquire relevant skills . For instance, graphic designers position can learn relevant skills, such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop , logo designing, etc.

Research the company and get information about the job. If the interview date is two to three weeks from now, subscribe to a relevant course on your resume . There are many types of certifications that belong — and don’t belong — on a resume. Obviously, significant qualifications like degrees or mandatory professional accreditations should be listed, but what about short courses you can take fully online?

Do online courses belong on your resume?

The short answer is: It depends .

The longer answer is, there are a few things you should consider when listing an online course on your resume, like:

• Is it relevant to the job you’re applying for?
• Does it demonstrate key skills?
• Is it from a reputable source?
• How senior are you?

We'll discuss when to list online courses on your resume — and when to leave them off — in more detail below. First, let's take a look at how to list online courses on your resume.

Listing online courses on your resume: A step by step guide

• Focus on relevant courses. If you've completed multiple online courses, choose 1-2 that are most relevant to the specific job you're applying for.
• Choose where to list them. Online courses can be listed in your education, certifications, projects, or other section — more on that below.
• List the name of the course.
• Include the name of the provider.
• Specify the date you completed the qualification.

Udacity have gained a reputation for offering strong courses, partnering with reputable businesses, and requiring stronger effort to pass than similar online courses, which makes them a good option for picking up a new skill.

To list a Udacity degree on your resume, you have a few options:

• List it in your education section
• Put it in a separate certifications section
• Include Udacity in your resume projects section

Putting a Udemy certificate on a resume

Unlike other online course providers, Udemy doesn't grade students or require tests to pass. That doesn't mean you can't include a Udemy completion on your resume — just make sure it adds value before you do.

Putting an eCornell certificate on a resume

If you have an online certificate from a reputable institution like Cornell, it's worth highlighting that on your resume. So, when shouldn’t you list an online course on your resume? Here are some general principles to keep in mind:

Keep very short courses off your resume

On the flip side, any course that only takes a very short time to complete (less than a few days or so) usually won’t be significant enough to include on your resume. In general, aim to include no more than 1-2 certifications — listing every single workshop or conference you’ve ever attended will only waste valuable resume space and dilute the impact of any genuinely relevant certifications.

Only list relevant online courses

This is the basic litmus test for everything on your resume: Is it relevant to the specific job you’re applying for? It doesn’t matter how impressive the qualification, if it has nothing to do with the role or industry you’re targeting, it’s better to leave it off.

Experience trumps qualifications

If you're a senior-level candidate or have at 8+ years of experience in your field, it's often a good idea to leave off short online courses from your resume, unless they're clearly credited, like an Executive MBA or similar. Most hiring managers only will focus on your formal work experience on a resume when you're at the senior level, and education, extra-curricular and online courses are much less important.

Read Udemy’s course reviews from other students before committing to a course. This is one of the best ways to ensure that you’re selecting a course that’s worth your money.

One course that I went through as a part of this Udemy review was The Complete Conversion Rate Optimization course , which Udemy provided to help with this review.

However, if you’re in a rush and aren’t sensitive to the price, then I’d say that Udemy is worth it even at regular pricing if you choose a highly-rated course with plenty of positive reviews.

Why is Udemy So Cheap?

Most courses on Udemy are cheap because the website relies on high volume to make money. This is normal within the e-learning space and for online courses in general. While creating a course requires a lot of time and effort upfront, it doesn’t cost the teacher or Udemy any additional money to bring on each additional student. The lessons are already created and ready to be viewed.

Because of this, Udemy instructors, and the company itself, can still make a great profit even with relatively low pricing.

The fact that courses on Udemy are relatively cheap doesn’t mean that the training and instructors aren’t good.

Rest assured, you can find high-quality courses on Udemy despite the prices being low.

I was doubtful about this initially because of the low pricing, too, but after going through a few popular courses, I changed my mind. They were absolutely worth the money and time spent!

Note, however, that there’s one additional reason some instructors offer their courses for very cheap (or free). Some teachers on Udemy will upload a basic course in the hopes of driving leads to their “main” course, which costs more money and is often hosted on another site.

Some Udemy courses will award certificates of completion to students.

These certificates are provided in PNG or JPG format and can be uploaded to your LinkedIn profile or other social networks, shown to potential employers, etc. You could also convert the image file into a PDF. Many free online programs offer this option.

So while you won’t be earning transferrable credits or a degree when you take online courses with Udemy, you will be able to show that you finished a course and gained knowledge in a new area.

Are Udemy Certificates Worth It?

Udemy certificates are not formally recognized by employers, recruiters, or accredited educational institutions, and you shouldn’t enroll in a Udemy course only for the certificate.

The main reason to go through the courses and lessons that Udemy offers is to gain a real-world education and build skills that you hope to use. The certificate that some courses offer should be secondary.

The certificate is a nice little bonus that you can show on your LinkedIn profile, etc., but it’s not a huge difference-maker, and I’d go so far as to say that you shouldn’t rule out a popular, high-rated course just because it doesn’t offer a certificate. (Some Udemy courses seem to offer a certificate of completion while others don’t).

How to Know if a Udemy Course Offers a Certificate of Completion

If a particular class on Udemy includes a certificate of completion, you’ll see it among the course details just before clicking “Add to cart” when viewing the course. Look for the section entitled, “This course includes.”

Should You Put Udemy Courses on a Resume?

Yes, it is beneficial to put Udemy courses on your resume. Doing so may help you get more job interviews and will also give you a unique talking point in your interviews, when the hiring manager asks what you’ve been doing recently aside from job searching.

As a former recruiter , I can tell you that this is especially important if you’re unemployed, were laid off or fired, etc.

The more time that passes without a job, the more employers start to worry that your skills might not be quite as “fresh” as other candidates. (I know this isn’t always true, but it’s how many employers view the situation).

So to combat this, put your completed Udemy courses on your resume and LinkedIn profile, and you’ll also have a great response in interviews when employers ask, “What have you been doing to keep your skills fresh while unemployed?”

Where to Put Udemy Courses on Your Resume

I recommend listing your completed Udemy course topic under your resume skills section. Here’s an example of what your list of skills may look like if you completed a Udemy course in email marketing.

• Creative Writing
• Professional Writing
• Microsoft Excel
• Social Media Advertising
• Email Marketing (Completed Udemy Course: Fundamentals of Email Marketing for E-Commerce, January 2021)

Ways to Use Udemy as a Job Seeker

Since this site is mainly a job search and career blog , I want to wrap up this review by sharing a couple of specific ways you can use Udemy’s course platform to boost your job hunt and professional career.

I mentioned that you can include Udemy courses on your resume already, and I mentioned the certificate of completion that some courses provide, but there’s more you can do, too.

First, it may be worth taking a Udemy course to boost your job search skills directly

For example, Udemy offers classes in topics such as:

• Resume writing
• Negotiation
• Job interviewing
• Public speaking
• Body language

Udemy is also worth it for boosting a job-related skill or teaching yourself a new professional skill

After completing some training related to the type of jobs you’re pursuing, you can mention it in your cover letters  and bring it up in job interviews when employers ask, “What have you been doing to keep your skills current?” or, “What have you been doing this year aside from job searching?” (These are particularly common interview questions if you’ve been unemployed for a few months or more.)

You can also use Udemy classes to build the foundation to break into a brand-new career

Whether you want to transition into a new full-time career, or set out as a freelancer or consultant, Udemy offers a chance to learn topics like software engineering, web design, data science, digital marketing , etc.

Those are all high-demand, high-paying jobs, in industries where employers often consider skills above formal education and degrees.

Those are just a couple of additional ways that students can use Udemy’s course platform to boost their career.

And since Udemy offers free courses, you can use the learning platform even if you don’t have much money to spend during your job search. While you won’t gain the most in-depth education from the typical free Udemy class, it can still provide some basic training to get you started in a new field.

For this reason, it’s worth looking through the courses on Udemy as a job seeker and finding at least one that will benefit you.

Conclusion: Are Udemy Courses Worth the Money?

For most students, Udemy classes are worth the money. Udemy courses are typically well-organized, informative, and not very costly , especially if you wait for Udemy to offer one of their frequent sales where top courses drop from $100+ to below $15.

At this discounted price point, Udemy is certainly worth it, and after speaking to multiple colleagues who have been through courses on Udemy, I’ve heard the same conclusion over and over.

I’ve spoken to friends who have told me the course content in a $100 Udemy course was as good as a $500 online course that they bought elsewhere.

And the platform becomes an even better deal if you wait for the frequent sales where the courses on Udemy drop to below $15 in price. This seems to happen quite regularly, both during holidays and at random times throughout the typical month.

However, Udemy is not perfect for everyone, and it wouldn’t be right to end this Udemy review without sharing who it’s not ideal for, so let’s finish our review by discussing that.

Udemy May Not Be Worth It For You If…

If you’re looking for live, immersive training to learn a complex field such as software engineering, then you may want to consider live bootcamps where you can ask questions as you learn, interact more with classmates, etc.

And if you want to take a high number of courses, you may get more value from an e-learning platform that lets you pay a single, low monthly subscription to access everything . My two favorites are Skillshare and LinkedIn Learning.

Lastly, Udemy isn’t the right learning platform for those looking to earn transferable credits. If so, you should look to accredited institutions like universities and community colleges.

Otherwise, Udemy is Absolutely Worth It!

For everyone else, especially those who want to learn and improve on a topic through a budget-friendly online course website, Udemy is a strong option. That’s why MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) have entered the scene. Online course providers like   Udemy ,   Coursera ,   edX ,   Skillshare , and   Lynda/LinkedIn Learning promise a convenient way to learn high-demand job skills outside of a college degree.

Whether you’re changing careers or just starting out,   it was a good idea for you to complete that MOOC.   But now that you’ve   upskilled , you’re probably pondering one big question:   how do I list online courses on my resume?

Should you even bother adding Udemy, Coursera, or edX courses and certificates on your resume? Will they look impressive, or will the hiring manager not even care?

This article will give you all the info you need to discern whether to add a MOOC on a resume.   (We’ll also cover how to list those online classes if you choose to.)

To list or not to list? The dilemma of adding a MOOC on a resume

First, let’s talk about   what a resume should look like .

Your resume is your ticket to a job interview. It’s not a   book report   on everything you’ve done, but a   sales pitch   to get you in the door. So, it needs to be   value-packed and accomplishment-driven , but also   as short as possible.

This brings us to the dilemma of adding MOOCs on a resume. You want to include everything you can to show your qualifications, but you also have to consider   the length of your resume.   Is adding a Udemy course or a Coursera certificate on your resume going to strengthen it, or weigh it down?

Plus,   will a hiring manager actually take your course seriously?   We know this is a burning question for you, and unfortunately, there isn’t always a clear answer.

The good news is that including a MOOC will not outright disqualify you with hiring staff. But the verdict is still out on how employers feel about them.

A   helpful blog from ZipRecruiter   quotes a variety of opinions from recruiters. One emphasized that “ in the IT space, education is not that much of a big deal – most clients want to see experience .” Another recruiter believed in the power of MOOCs, but found they “ vary substantially in difficulty and practical application. ”

So, should you add the MOOC you took on your resume? Remember that the unexamined life is not worth living and   the unexamined resume is not worth writing . Start by   carefully considering the nature of your career and the classes you took , as your resume content is   always dependent on your unique situation .

Then, read through these considerations and decide whether and how to list your online classes on your resume.

When to List an Online Class on Your Resume

If you can prove its worth in the interview..

The hiring manager might not think much of a MOOC as a resume item , but it can be  a valuable tool in the interview.  List an online class on your resume if you can explain, in-person, how it challenged you and prepared you for the job.

Spin it well with  specific stories  about your dedication and ambition, but be honest. If you skimmed this class 2 years ago in a Red Bull-fueled haze at 3 am, don’t bother with it.

If you don’t have much relevant education.

If you’re applying to a job that prefers a college degree you don’t have, it would be a good idea to list your online classes under Education to fill a void. Adding a Udemy certificate on your resume won’t be equivalent to a bachelor’s degree, but it will at least show that you have  some  formal   training.

Besides, there are many successful professionals without college degrees. (We see their resumes all the time!)

If it was an intense, job-ready course from a professional source.

Not all MOOCs are created equal. An edX certificate or Coursera course is likely designed for professionals to master a job skill. These intensive paid courses are often taught by industry leaders such as IBM and Google.

A more short-term course taught on Skillshare or HubSpot Academy, on the other hand, will certainly be helpful but will likely not be seen as something in the realm of higher education.

If your MOOC is the only example you have of a job-crucial skill.

As a recruiter was quoted saying earlier, experience is typically much more valuable than training to demonstrate a skill on a resume. However,  if you haven’t had the chance to use this new skill in a job yet , you should list the online class you took in it. Maybe you simply haven’t used C# or Python in the field, but listing a MOOC in it will show that you’re ready to.

If you want to show that you’ve upskilled to something brand new.

Similarly, even if you have a good deal of experience, adding a MOOC in a brand-new skill will show your potential for upward mobility and your desire to learn. (I’m looking at you,  career changers.)

And above all…

If you have the room.

Do NOT let an online class push you onto another page, especially if you already have some experience and higher education. More on this later…

When Not to List an Online Class on Your Resume

If the course is too basic.

The “IBM Data Science Professional Certificate” on Coursera would be valuable on a resume. LinkedIn Learning’s 40-minute video on “Writing a Compelling Blog Post” (while informative) would not.

If it’s not typically valued in your industry.

There are many programming and data science MOOCs out there, but some industries have more formal, in-person certifications that you should seek out instead of a MOOC. These include the  Lean/Six Sigma belt system  for Business Operations, the  CompTIA A+ certifications  for Information Technology, or the  SHRM  for Human Resources.

If you already have a bunch of classes listed. 

If you’re wondering whether to add a fifth or sixth online course,  please don’t.  Just don’t. We’ll be surprised if the number of job-relevant classes that  need  to be on your resume is more than four.

If the course is not relevant to  this  job.

If you didn’t already know, your resume needs to be  tailored to each job you submit it to (if you want to get the job). I don’t need to see your training in C# if you want to be a social worker.

One Important Thing to Remember About That MOOC on Your Resume

You might have read through these factors and thought “man, I really wanted to mention that class!” Or, maybe you’re still on the fence about how to list an online class on your resume.

Whatever the case, remember one thing: Y our MOOCs can always be listed on your LinkedIn profile.  If you’re sad about killing a Coursera course or edX course on your resume, it can be given a new life on LinkedIn.

Supplemental information like non-crucial MOOCs  can actually make a great LinkedIn profile . Since you have more space to include them and your LinkedIn profile is not tied to just one job, they can give a complete picture of you as a professional. (Even if they’re not crucial enough to go on a resume.)

You now have the information to decide whether or not you should include each of your MOOCs on your resume. Great!

How to Add Coursera Credentials to Your Resume

Congratulations on completing your Coursera course or program! It’s now time to let the world know about your new skills and accomplishments. 

The first thing to remember as you begin the process of determining how best to feature your achievements on your resume, is that a resume is a tool you can use to showcase your unique talents, skills, and experience. It is not some fixed and locked template that you have to figure out how to squeeze yourself into. 

A resume is made up of different sections, each of which can be optimized to present yourself in the best light possible. Adding a new credential is a part of the process, but there are also additional ways that you can highlight your newfound skills and demonstrate the value you can bring to an organization. Here are some key things to consider about your Coursera training as you prepare to update your resume:

• What did you learn?  Be specific about the skills you learned on Coursera. Recruiters and hiring managers need to know exactly what functions you’re able to perform so they can determine if you’re a good fit for the job.
• What are you proud of?  Completing Coursera courses and earning credentials can be hard work, and the ability to persevere in the face of challenges is a very valuable skill. Make sure to communicate not just what you achieved, but what you had to do to get there. Demonstrating self-motivation, work ethic, and tenacity is a great way to show employers you’re the right choice for the role.
• What is most important for the reader to know?  Employers may or may not be familiar with Coursera or the specific course or program you’ve completed. Consider what they need to know about the program in order to be able to evaluate your learnings and accomplishments, and add additional information as necessary to make it clear what you learned, how you learned it, and how you applied what you learned.

Once you know what you want to communicate to employers about your Coursera experience, you can determine which resume sections are best suited to conveying that information. Below is a list of the major resume sections you’ll want to use, with guidance on how to optimize each section.

Education section

Depending on the type of credential you’ve earned, you may have questions about where to place it on your resume—should you list it under Education, or in a different section such as Training and Certifications? 

Unless there is a specific reason not to, you should list Coursera credentials in your Education section. 

One reason why you might want to make an exception is if your previously earned academic credentials are in a field unrelated to the role you’re pursuing. In that case, it can be advantageous to separately highlight your Coursera credential at the top of your resume, to make clear your current focus to anyone reading your resume. But in most cases, Education is the appropriate location.

When adding Coursera credentials to this section, you should follow the standard best practices for listing education on your resume and include the following information:

• Name . This is the official title of the course or program you completed.  Example: Big Data MasterTrack(™) Certificate, Digital Marketing Analytics Course, Master of Computer Science
• Education provider . This is the name of the university or industry partner who created the course or program. Example: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, IBM
• Completion date
• GPA  (degrees only)
• Summary . Here, you’ll want to include a short overview of the program so that those not familiar with Coursera will understand what was covered. Example: Four-course program covering health system development, policy and research, health service delivery, human resources for health; includes a hands-on Capstone project.

Skills section

The Skills section is usually located above the Professional Experience section of your resume. An employer should be able to read this section and easily determine that you’re qualified for the role, so make sure to include the job-relevant skills you’ve learned on Coursera.

For a non-technical role, the Skills sections can consist of 4-8 short bullets detailing your core skills (also known as Areas of Expertise) organized in two or three columns. Focus on quantifiable skills like copywriting, agile project management, Google Analytics, or sales funnel management. 

For a technical role, the Skills list can be longer and be organized by type, i.e., software, programming languages, hardware, data analytics, or any other categories that apply.

Projects section

This is where you want to feature any job-relevant projects you’ve completed on Coursera. Projects are a great way to demonstrate to employers what you can accomplish using your skills, especially if you are starting a new career and don’t have other professional experience. 

When including a Projects section, always focus on what’s most important for the employer:

• List out a maximum of 3-5 projects. You want to avoid overwhelming the reader with too much information.
• Summarize each project, explain the context, and include numbers to show the scope. When applicable, link out to additional information on the projects, such as your Github repository.
• Include measurable outcomes to demonstrate your accomplishments. 

Don’t worry if you haven’t completed any projects as part of your Coursera coursework. It’s not a requirement that you have them. However, it is important to remember that any time you can demonstrate your real-world skills, you should try to do so. What you want is to convince a potential employer that you already have the skills and experience to perform the role you’re applying for.

Other sections

If the information you wanted to communicate to the employers doesn’t fit under the Education, Skills, or Projects sections, consider other existing or additional resume sections, such as Summary, Accomplishments, Hobbies and Interests, etc. 

Remember that the resume structure should support the information you want to communicate. As long as you follow the standard  best practices for resume writing , you can add and organize sections in whatever way allows you to clearly tell your story.

Learning on Coursera is an excellent way to master job-ready skills, earn valuable credentials, and advance your career. Your resume is how you’ll showcase these accomplishments to recruiters and hiring managers, as well as your network. It’s important to present your skills and experience in the best light possible, and in a way that makes it easy for potential employers to see that you’re the right candidate for the job. When you’re able to clearly demonstrate how learning on Coursera has prepared you for success in your target role, you can be sure to get the kind of attention you deserve whenever you apply for a new opportunity.
