MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics (CTL) researchers advise select students in the  Interdepartmental Doctoral Program in Transportation  led by MIT’s Mobility Initiative, a cross-disciplinary graduate program in transportation which provides graduate degrees for students interested in transportation studies and research. 

The Interdepartmental Doctoral Program in Transportation provides a structured and follow-on doctoral program for students. The interdepartmental structure of the degree allows students flexibility in developing individually tailored paths of study that cross both disciplinary and departmental lines. The University of Oklahoma doctoral program will help you develop an in-depth knowledge of supply chain management topics. Supply Chain Management

An academic career in supply chain management (SCM) focuses on the creation and dissemination of research. A supply chain consists of suppliers/vendors, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers interconnected by transportation, information and financial infrastructure with an objective of providing value to the end consumer in terms of products and services, and for each channel participant to garner a profit in doing so. A supply chain also requires financial and information flows between channel members. Managing all these flows effectively and efficiently requires a systems approach to successfully identify, analyze and coordinate the interactions among the entities. Integrated management of these flows given the often-conflicting objectives of the channel members and the continuously evolving dynamic structure is the main focus of SCM. Supply chain core areas include logistics, operations management, supply and distribution management.

The PhD program is designed as a full-time in-person degree program to train students for academic faculty positions at leading research universities. After degree completion, students will be able to identify supply chain research problems that are managerially relevant, analyze them in a scholarly way and provide solutions for addressing them. This training is accomplished through the doctoral seminars, research methodology courses and completion of research projects and a dissertation. Students are also prepared to assume the role of educators by serving as instructional/teaching assistants and course instructors and faculty mentorship.

With new technologies like the internet of things, 3D printing, and artificial intelligence, and the application of advanced analytical techniques to big data, there are numerous research opportunities emerging in supply chains. The COVID-19 pandemic underscores operational and strategic importance of supply chain management. Furthermore, Supply Chain Management plays an essential role in improving the quality of life within a society and engendering equity, health, and the preservation of natural resources.

The Operations and Sourcing Management (OSM) Ph.D. program at Michigan State University, Eli Broad College of Business offers doctoral students a way of participating in these exciting opportunities through research and teaching. Our goal is to provide every student admitted to the supply chain management Ph.D. program with a graduate assistantship and/or a fellowship. The assistantship is usually at a half-time level, although some students may be appointed quarter time. A half-time appointment requires that the student be a teaching assistant and/or research assistant for 20 hours a week.

Renewal of financial assistance is contingent on the student making satisfactory progress in the program. Assistantships include a nine-credit-hour tuition waiver for each of the fall and spring semesters, a waiver for the out-of-state portion of tuition for non-Michigan residents, and health insurance. The waiver does not include registration fees or other fees.

Financial support is assured for the first four years of the program. Further support is provided subject to the availability of financial resources and the candidate making satisfactory, significant progress in the doctoral program.

Fellowship aid is available from the university, the Supply Chain Management department and external sources.

No. The Supply Chain Management program is strictly a full-time program, and we are not able to accommodate part-time students. Aside from coursework, research and independent study require students to be on campus on a full-time basis.

No. A degree from a U.S. school should exempt you from the TOEFL requirements.

The Operations and Sourcing Management Ph.D. program is designed for students to complete in four years.

The deadline for applications is February 1st.

Please note that all applications are reviewed centrally. We encourage you to reach out to faculty specifically. However, that in itself does not ensure you get admitted to the program. At the end of the deadline, the faculty will collectively gather and review all applicants for that year. Typical factors that are considered are GRE/GMAT scores – both verbal and quantitative sores. Given the nature of Supply Chain Management research, there is a greater emphasis on quantitative talent. Please contact the doctoral Program coordinator for the Operations and Sourcing Management Program for further questions.

GRE and GMAT scores are mandatory. Unfortunately, we cannot grant any waiver or exceptions to these.

We do not have minimum cut-off scores on the GMAT or GRE. The GRE and GMAT scores are also seen along with program specific accomplishments of the students. However, admission to the Operations and Sourcing Management Ph.D. program is extremely competitive, and our current students have averaged in the 90th percentile on the verbal and 80th percentile on the quantitative portions of the GMAT and/or GRE. This can vary by year. We certainly expect a minimum of 85th percentile in quantitative; and 75th percentile in Verbal. An applicant with any score below the 70th percentile in quantitative scores or a cumulative score below the 75th percentile overall is unlikely to be admitted. However, regardless of test scores, each applicant is fully reviewed by the admissions committee.

International students are required to take the TOEFL. The Broad Graduate School of Management specifies a minimum total score of 600 for the paper version or 250 total for the computer version. Scores at or above this minimum will not guarantee admission.

Ph.D. Program in Logistics and Supply Chain Management

Academic Program The Ph.D. program is delivered via traditional course work and other research initiatives with faculty in the Parker College of Business.

The program will require at least 60 credit hours, provided the student has a master’s in business from an institution accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB). Students lacking a core understanding of major business areas may require up to an additional 18 credit hours.

Admissions Students are admitted in the Fall Semester of each year. Applications are accepted at any time, however, early admission decisions will be very limited. Application deadlines for consideration for the following fall are February 1 for guaranteed consideration and March 1 for late consideration.

Admission Requirements

The Ph.D. program admits students in the fall semester.  To be given full consideration, applicants must have their packet complete by March 1.  Applications completed after March 1 may be considered at the discretion of the admission committee.  In certain cases, admitted students may take remedial classes the summer before starting the program.

To complete an application to the Ph.D. program, applicants must submit the following:

• Completed online graduate application  form .
• $50 application fee.
• Official transcript(s) from  all  colleges and universities attended, showing courses completed, grades earned, dates, and degree(s) awarded.  For purposes of the admissions committee, unofficial transcripts can be appended to the application.
• Three letters of recommendation.  Letters should address the recommender’s evaluation of the student’s capacity for advanced graduate studies.
• Official GMAT scores taken in the last five years. An original copy of the test score, sent by the testing agency to the Office of Admissions, is required before final action will be taken on an application. A copy of the score provided to the student may be appended to the application for the admissions committee.  The GMAT is preferred, however very strong GRE scores will be considered.
• All international applicants, including resident and nonresident aliens, whose native language is not English, are required to submit official TOEFL or IELTS scores taken within the year immediately preceding the requested semester of admission. An original copy of the test score, sent by the testing agency to the Office of Admissions, is required before final action is taken on an application. The copy of the score provided to the student can be appended to the application for the admissions committee.
• Statement of purpose that includes a description of professional goals, rationale for how the Ph.D. program will further the student’s career objectives and research interests.
• A current resume that includes, as a minimum, all academic programs completed, an employment history, and any professional certifications, publications, or other significant achievements and honors.
• If accepted into the program, a  Certificate of Immunization Form  completed and sent directly to the Office of Health Services; and
• Applicants whose submitted application packages merit closer consideration will be expected to participate in an interview before a final decision is reached concerning their acceptance.

*Applicants may be required to take certain foundation courses prior to program concentration courses. Conditions of admission will be presented in the letter of acceptance to each student.

Goal 3: Graduates will demonstrate their ability to design and conduct original research in their chosen fields of specialization.

How long does the Ph.D. program usually take to complete? The program is designed to be completed in four years.  However, it is to be expected that different students will progress at different rates.

What financial assistance is available? Ph.D. students in good standing can expect to be funded for at least four years while in residence. Funding takes the form of a tuition waiver (both in- and out-of-state) and stipend. Financial assistance usually comes as Graduate, Teaching or Research  Assistantships  under faculty supervision.

As a valuable component of students professional development, the program and the university support and fully fund student travel for approved presentations, conferences and colloquia.

Admission Decisions The goal of the admissions committee is to admit individual candidates and build cohorts with the greatest potential to frame, conduct and publish high quality research in the area.  Factors heavily influencing the decision include academic potential (prior coursework/school, standardized test scores, publications), motivation (personal statement), ability to communicate (writing samples, teaching evaluations, interview) and intangibles (relevant experience, maturity/self awareness).

Admission requirements.

• A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
• Send official college transcripts (mailed as sealed, unopened copies or sent via a direct electronic transcript system). At least 30 semester hours of graduate business credit, as well as a regionally or nationally accredited master’s degree in business or a business-related field with at least a 3.0 GPA is required for admission in good standing.
• Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. For information on alternative assessments or TOEFL waivers, please call Admissions or view the official International Admissions policy .

Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

• Be in your final term and planning to start your doctoral degree after the last day of class for your master’s degree.
• Complete a Master’s Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
• Submit an official transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show that you are within 6 credit hours of completion for a 30-48 credit hour master’s degree or within 9 credit hours of completion for a 49+ credit hour master’s degree.
• Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new doctoral degree.

Digital transformation, sustainability, resilience, blockchain — all are now essential elements of a good program, the kind employers want to hire graduates from. That’s what the leadership at Marquette University’s College of Business understands. Employers have taken notice, which is a big reason the small, storied Midwestern B-school just saw the best year-to-year improvement in rankings fortune of nearly all of a few dozen top U.S. B-schools. The ranking: Gartner’s biennial list of the top 25 university supply chain graduate and undergraduate programs. Marquette’s College of Business graduate school jumped 10 places from Gartner’s 2022 ranking , to 7th, and its undergraduate program jumped nine places, to 10th. In both lists, Marquette, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is among the smallest of all ranked programs, with around 30 students in its graduate supply chain master’s, another 70 or 80 in the school’s MBA program with a supply chain concentration, and just under 200 in its supply chain undergraduate major. MARQUETTE DEMONSTRATES AGILITY — AND FORESIGHT  Marquette’s Mark Barratt: “We invest in every single student, and I think that’s part of the big difference, and that’s really what we focus on” “One thing that I’m particularly proud of with the supply chain rankings is the fact that if you look at the size of the programs, we’re punching well above our weight,”says Mark Barratt, chair of the Management Department at Marquette since 2020, and associate professor in the school’s operations and supply chain group since January 2013. Barratt teaches both the undergrad capstone course, Integrated Supply Chain Strategy, and courses in the school’s Master’s in Supply Chain Management program. “We’re much smaller, but I think that’s actually helpful because it enables us to be much more agile so we can kind of change with what’s happening, what skills are needed by industry. So for example, with the graduate program, we’ve already got a course that’s in development, but it’s really about how are companies using generative AI in their supply chains, because that’s exploded since 2023.” Barratt credits the foresight of Marquette leadership in 2018, which oversaw an overhaul of the school’s supply chain curriculum — away from a focus on the physical side and toward digital transformation and sustainability. That kind of foresight has put Marquette at the forefront of how AI is impacting supply chains. Employers love what they’re cooking in Milwaukee. “We’ve got the ability to do that, to be more agile, because whether it’s at the graduate or the undergraduate level, we are smaller,” Barratt says. “I think about ASU and I think about the University of Tennessee, where they have between 600 and 1,000 supply chain majors. For them, it takes time to make change, whereas we’ve got the ability to change that much quicker.” GARTNER: ARKANSAS TAKES TOP UNDERGRAD SPOT FOR 3RD STRAIGHT RANKING Fifty-two schools in the U.S. and Canada participated in Gartner’s 2024 survey of undergraduate supply chain programs, and 47 participated in the graduate survey. In schools’ curricula, Gartner found growing interest in analytics and a decline in manufacturing focus. “This is especially noticeable in supply chain MBA degrees,” says Dana Stiffler, distinguished VP analyst with the Gartner Supply Chain practice, “with less than 50% of programs having significant manufacturing content, compared to 76% of programs two cycles ago in 2020.” Gartner ranks the University of Tennessee the top B-school for supply chain graduate programs, followed by the University of Arkansas, which is based in Fayetteville where Walmart is headquartered. The 1-2 of Tennessee-Arkansas is unchanged from Gartner’s 2022 ranking. The rest of the 2024 top five is rounded out by Rutgers, up from No. 5 in 2022; the University of Texas at Dallas, same as 2022; and the University of South Carolina, up from No. 6. The biggest jumper among 25 supply chain graduate programs is Arizona State University, which leaped 13 places to No. 10. Marquette is next, having jumped 10 places to No. 7. Indiana University improved eight places to land 12th. For supply chain undergraduate programs, Nos. 1-2 are flipped, with Arkansas taking the top spot and Tennessee at No. 2. Arkansas has been No. 1 since 2020 ; Tennessee is No. 2 for a second straight ranking. South Carolina ranks third for a second straight ranking, while the University of North Texas is No. 4, up from No. 6, and Rutgers is No. 5, same as 2022. Marquette, at No. 10, and Purdue University, at No. 15, tied for the biggest improvement from the 2022 ranking, each up nine places. See the next pages for the complete 2024 Gartner rankings. ‘WE INVEST IN EVERY SINGLE STUDENT’ Mark Barratt spent 10 years at Arizona State University teaching undergrads and MBAs supply chain management and logistics before joining Marquette in early 2013. He says one of Marquette’s biggest advantages compared to bigger programs like ASU is the ability of faculty to get to know students better: a personalized touch that is a crucial ingredient in students becoming more confident and capable graduates. “At Marquette, I pretty much know every single student,” he says. “And so first day of class, they walk in and I’m like, ‘Hey Joe, hey Fred, Steve, Jane.’ The fact is, they’re not here to be a number in the class. We’re not here to just talk generally. We invest in every single student, and I think that’s part of the big difference, and that’s really what we focus on.” That focus on the individual certainly helped Marquette when it came to the alumni response portion of the Gartner ranking, Barratt says. “A large part of the Gartner ranking obviously is the industry value component,” he says. “What we do is, we reach out to pretty much all of our students with a personalized email and say, ‘Hey, look, the ranking is coming up. If you appreciated what we’ve done for you in terms of the degree or whatever, whether it’s undergrad or graduate, please consider filling in the survey.’ And I think the response has been phenomenal.” A LOGICAL LOGISTICS LANDING SPOT With an online master’s in supply chain management, a robust specialization in the full-time MBA program, and a Center for Supply Chain Management that this year celebrated its 25th anniversary — all in addition to its thriving undergraduate program — Marquette is a logical landing spot for students interested in supply chain management. But it hasn’t always sold itself well, Barratt says. That’s another thing that is changing as the top schools become closer rivals for talent. “I think the gap between the top 25 has closed significantly,” Barratt says. “Gartner used to rank content of the curriculum. Now they don’t because the content has very much normalized across the top 25. But there are still opportunities there to highlight more of the hotter-topic issues like digital transformation. “The other thing that we’ve done: We make sure that we actually talk about what we offer. Because I think academic institutions are not always great advocates for themselves. If you talk about it, people go, ‘Oh, great, that’s wonderful.’ If you don’t talk about it, then you’re just the same as everybody else where they just don’t know.
