More than ever, there has been an increase in Nigerians desiring to study abroad at various institutions at either undergraduate or postgraduate programs. The vast majority of countries Nigerians desire to go are: the United States of America (USA), United Kingdom (UK), Germany, China, Canada, South Africa, Netherlands, Norway, India, Russia, China, South Korea, Israel etc. Some of these scholarships involved in postgraduate studies include: PTDF scholarships, Shell postgraduate scholarships, NLNG postgraduate scholarships, AGIP postgraduate scholarships, Commonwealth scholarships, MEXT Japan, Chevening scholarships, Erasmus etc. There are numerous to mention. Certain requirements are expected of them, some of which are: travel documents, transcripts, standardised tests’ results (GRE, LSAT, SAT, GMAT, IELTS, TOEFL, EJU), certificates, letters of recommendation, etc. What is missing there? Personal statement .

A personal statement is not “usually” part of what constitutes an aspiring student’s materials when travelling to the university of his/her choice. However, it is an important aspect in universities’ admission. As the name connotes, it is personal . This implies that every personal statement is unique to an individual and no two or more personal statements are the same. It is about you. Unlike a CV which is majorly about your professional/career history; personal statements encompasses everything about one’s life: your activities, why you desire to study the course, why the university, personal goals, failures, achievements, ambitions etc. It is an opportunity for the institution to know more about you beyond your professional life. So, the question is: How does one write a personal statement?

OPENING STATEMENT

Unsurprisingly, this is the hardest part when writing a statement. Most individuals tend to overdo this aspect thereby making admission officers to throw their application in the bin. There is really no point creating an over-kill statement thereby making your introduction verbose.

Additionally, no point using cliché words or quotes by prominent individuals. Admission officers want to see your thoughts not others. It is you not them that aspire to study the course and discipline. Your interest in the course and university should be of utmost importance. Commence with why you chose it; what excites you about the course and why you want to learn more about it. This is the opportunity to display your desire to studying the course and school.

WHY DO YOU WANT TO STUDY THE COURSE?

  You are expected to elucidate reasons for studying the course/discipline you chose. Admission officers want to read the desire and enthusiasm you have for the course. This is by narrating several events in a logical and sequential manner in a way to attract the mind of the officer(s). Your work experiences, volunteering activities, projects etc. You have to marry these together in a coherent manner.

It can be very tempting to overemphasise a point, but do note that, this is graduate school. Admissions officers expect you to sound like one – a graduate. Don’t risk trying to crack a joke, as the admissions officer may not share your sense of humour – different cultures and belief system. Avoid personal clichés and leave out the unnecessary celebrity quotes.

Additionally, relate your hobbies, skill-set, extra-curricular activities and interests to display suitability for the course program. Conclude this by elucidating why the university will be the best place to undergo your studies. This is by listing core resources, staff members, facilities, research output from the department etc. Think about the question: Why are you good for this course?

There are DO’s and Don’ts in writing a personal statement/ statement of purpose /essay.

• Use everyday language:  It’s unique to you and your person than to express yourself in grandiose vocabularies which will most of the time take you to the thesaurus/dictionary every few minutes. Your statement of purpose /essay or personal statement should reflect your personality – the real you.
• Have some rules when writing:  An example is the “so what if”. This mostly comes up especially if you are not sure of the information.
• Spell check you write-up:  Are you applying to an institution using British English or American? S go through the article again, even if the next day.
• Read aloud:  If necessary, print your document and read aloud your statement to locate possible errors that could not be spotted on the screen. You might also give to someone you know has a better grasp of the language than you.
• Brevity:  Be concise and make your write-up lucid. Make it easier for the reader and anyone to be able to understand what you are saying from a first sight.
• Integrity:  Be honest and reflective where appropriate. What is it about this course or university that you are applying for that will help you grow, and develop? This is the only chance, before an interview for an institution or potential employer to get some context about you – it’s important to not just show off (positively) but to show how they can help you.
• Specific:  Be specific and use statistics that demonstrate your work/achievements to date. Generic statements, vague claims and bland examples will not make you stand out.
• Volunteering Activities:  Mention all of your voluntary work. It shows your commitment, passion and the skills you have developed.
• Lie:  Plagiarise, exaggerate or lie. Be truthful and say the things about you.
• Humdrum: Overuse buzzwords like ‘passion, dedicated, motivated, effective’ etc. or make sweeping statements like ‘I am a highly motivated …’; let the examples do the talking; remember your statement comes in partnership with your CV and ‘motivation’ is easy to demonstrate without explicitly stating it a 1000 time.
• Hackneyed:  Use a hackneyed statement, such as ‘I am a people person’.
• Irrelevant:  Include irrelevant personal facts like your date of birth (you can put these in your CV if you wish to include them). Of course, if you are specifically asked to provide these details, then do so.
• Celebrity Quotes:  Include quotes from other people in place of your own thoughts (especially famous quotes), unless there is a very good reason.  On the other hand, quotes from referees may be fine – just don’t bombard the reader with such.
• Enumerate:  ‘List’ your interests. Instead, demonstrate them, such as ‘I volunteer for a domestic violence helpline’ rather than ‘I am interested in domestic violence issues’.
• Boredom:  Bore the reader. If you get bored when you re-read your statement yourself, then you need to revise it and make it more interesting.

Finally, you need to own it and believe in it.  So, having taken account of all the advice, write it the way that you want to – and in such a way that it sounds like and reads like the ‘real’ you. These should be properly fitted into your introduction, body and conclusion.

A 500 words personal statement should be concise. It should capture the reader’s attention from the start and explain why you’re interested in the field. Additionally, it should include any relevant skills, experiences, and achievements. Avoid unnecessary information, excessive detail, clichés, negativity, and repetition. 

Instead, focus on genuine experiences that directly relate to your chosen program. It should also concentrate on why you deserve this scholarship.

Here’s how to go about it the statement of purpose: 

Introduction : Start with a strong opening that grabs the reader’s attention. You can share a personal anecdote, a surprising fact, or a statement that expresses your motivation and curiosity to learn more.

Why You’re Interested: Establish a clear connection between your interests and the opportunity you’re applying for. Highlight specific aspects of the opportunity that align with your passion or goals.

Your Qualifications: Discuss the experiences and skills that make you a strong candidate. Demonstrate how these experiences have equipped you with valuable skills or insights.

Personal Growth: Reflect on the lessons you’ve learned from your experiences and how they have helped you grow as an individual. Show your ability to learn from challenges and your readiness for future endeavors.

Your Goals and Aspirations: Share your vision for the future and explain how the opportunity you’re applying for aligns with your goals. Connect the program or opportunity with the skills, knowledge, or experience you seek.

Conclusion: Summarize your key points, your work ethics and restate your excitement about the opportunity, and leave the reader with a sense of your passion, commitment.

What You Shouldn’t Include in a 500-Word Personal Statement

Irrelevant Information: Stay focused and avoid sharing experiences or skills unrelated to your application.

Excessive Detail: Stick to the crucial details and avoid lengthy descriptions. Focus on what’s important for your story and purpose.

Clichés and Generalizations: Be specific and personal in your experiences and aspirations. Avoid generic phrases that don’t reveal anything unique about you.

Negative Tone: While honesty is important, don’t dwell excessively on negative experiences or failures. Instead, connect setbacks to learning experiences or personal growth.

Repetition: Avoid repeating the same ideas or experiences. Each point should contribute something new and valuable.

What should I include in my engineering personal statement?

It’s important to include skills and experience from all areas of your life and try to relate them to hobbies or extracurricular activities if they helped you to build on certain strengths.

Think about how any work experience has benefitted you, and how it might be useful in your degree. University admissions tutors want to know what you can bring to their department and what value you can add.

Engineering also required you to demonstrate experience in highly practical subjects.

For example, for an electrical engineering personal statement, you could talk about your hands-on skills and interests. Have you repaired a radio or television? How did you do it and what did you learn from it?

Make sure you explain with enthusiasm – tutors want passionate students on their course that are really going to make the most of their time at university.

What can I do with an engineering degree?

There are many career options available to those wishing to study engineering. These include:

What are the entry requirements for engineering?

If you want to take a degree in engineering you need an A level (or equivalent) in maths. In many cases you also need physics.

Some chemical engineering degrees ask for maths and chemistry instead; some ask for maths and physics; and some ask for all three.

Therefore, it's important to check the entry requirements carefully for any engineering course you are considering applying for.

A level entry requirements range from CCC to A*A*A*, with universities and colleges usually asking for ABB.

Which is the easiest engineering degree?

Most students would say that although still considered challenging, civil engineering is the easiest engineering degree to obtain.

However, it is still a rigorous course and you will need all the necessary entry requirements to secure a place (as well as a great personal statement !).

What engineering job has the highest salary?

According to the Engineer Salary Survey 2022 , engineers in the manufacturing sector are the highest paid in the UK, with an average salary of £65,340; followed by engineers in the energy, renewables and nuclear sector, who earn an average of £62,709.

The average salary for all engineers in 2022 was £58,108, which compares reasonably well with other professions in the UK, sitting below those in strategy and consultancy, qualified accountants, and those in banking, but above those working in financial services.

Is studying engineering hard?

Engineering ranks among one of the hardest degrees you can do.

The degree requires you to have everything from logic and common sense to a tremendous amount of patience when things don't go your way.

Engineering can be very difficult because you're essentially becoming a “professional problem solver”.

Remember that all engineering fields require a sting grasp of mathematics but some require more than others.

Engineering disciplines like electrical , mechanical , chemical , biomedical , software , aerospace and civil engineering all require very good math skills. However, some disciplines, like industrial engineering require slightly less.

Introduction

Most bachelor's degrees in the UK are three years in duration (e.g. BA, BSc, BEng, LLB).

For some subjects we also offer four-year programmes. This is usually a bachelor's degree with an integrated master's (e.g. MSci, MEng) or a year abroad.

We offer very few programmes with a placement year for three main reasons. Firstly, because a programme with a single or limited amount of fixed (i.e. guaranteed) placement options is unlikely to be the best fit for all students, and your preferences may change after studying the subject at university level for two years. Secondly, because you may subsequently decide to work in a field that is not among the available placement options. Thirdly, because the summer vacation is long, from June until October, and our extensive careers support and links to industry will help you find summer placements and vacation schemes that align with your ambitions.  

A UK degree is comprised of modules, which are courses on a specific topic. Each module has its own lectures, classes, tutorials, labs, and so on. Your degree programme will specify a set of compulsory and optional modules over its duration. Our location, size, and multidisciplinary structure means that we can offer a uniquely wide selection.

Application process

All UK bachelor's degree applications are made via UCAS , a centralised application portal. It allows you to apply to up to five programmes at UK universities, but you can submit only one personal statement. It also requires final or predicted grades and a teacher's reference.

If you are successful and yet to complete your final exams, you will receive a conditional offer. This will become unconditional once we have received your results.

A small number of programmes require additional documents, tests, or a portfolio. This will be indicated on the  programme page in the prospectus .

Entry requirements

Our minimum grade requirements are high, but UCAS gives you five programme options, so if your predicted grades are in line with the minimum, we encourage you to apply.

Grade and subject requirements for A Levels and IB Diploma are listed on each programme page in the prospectus . Equivalent qualifications can be viewed by selecting a country in the same section.

The Senior School Certificate (WAEC or NECO) and Senior Arabic and Islamic Secondary Certificate (NABAIS) are not acceptable as an entrance qualification. In general, applicants require one of the following:

• If you have US qualifications such as APs and ACTs, you should choose USA in our prospectus to see the exact entry requirements for that programme; for the French Baccalauréat choose France, etc.
• A UK university-based foundation course accepted by UCL, e.g. our  Undergraduate Preparatory Certificate (UPC)
• Distinction
• Upper credit
• If applicable, your school's internal deadline should take precedence
• Medicine MBBS BSc or applications that include programmes at Oxford or Cambridge: 15 October (18:00 GMT)
• All other programmes: late January, may vary by year (2023 entry deadline: 25 January, 18:00 GMT)

Post-deadline vacancies, Adjustment and Clearing

If a programme has places after the deadline, it will remain listed on UCAS. This typically applies to very few programmes at UCL.

UCAS Adjustment gives you the chance to apply for open programmes in addition to the ones on your original application if you have outperformed your offer requirements. UCAS Clearing is similar, but for when you have missed the offer requirements for your firm (i.e. first preference) and insurance programme choices.

The vast majority of UCL programmes will not open for applications via Adjustment or Clearing. More information will be published on our results pages in the spring.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

• Your grade requirements are just a minimum threshold.
• You will not be able to edit it after submitting your application.
• If a programme is unusual, you may be able to submit an additional personal statement or similar essay to do your application justice. This will be specified in its prospectus entry on the university website.
• You should devote at least 75% of your personal statement to your academic area(s) of interest, demonstrating enthusiasm and development with examples.
• The remaining portion should be about extra-curricular activities not related to your academic field. In general, it is best to use examples that demonstrate desirable qualities for your field or in general, as leadership, teamwork, perseverance, and self-motivation.
• A UCL degree is research-based, and the curriculum changes every year – you should be aware of and enthused by this.
• Start undertaking experiences and learning about your field early. You might not write about all these experiences, but they will inform your decisions and future career.
• Make reflective notes as you undertake extra-curricular experiences and learning.
• Where you undertake your experience is unimportant, as is its duration. We are concerned with what you learned and how it developed your interest in the subject.
• Leave time to write multiple drafts if possible, and to review thoroughly.

CHOOSING PROGRAMMES AND UNIVERSITIES 

• Does the university and department have a good international reputation?
• Is the location a good fit for you? Central London is convenient for your career – insight events, internships, assessment days, and interviews are likely to take place in London for any large company. It is also great for food, culture, and sports. But it is not quiet or pastoral.
• Our location, size, and multidisciplinary structure means that we can offer a uniquely wide selection.
• Look at the career destinations of previous graduates of the programme, either in the prospectus or on the departmental website.
• Check if we offer other programmes in the subject area . A slightly different programme or combination may be a better fit, and less competitive.
• Talk to staff and students directly: at open days , offer holder days, or one-to-one appointments .

We offer hundreds of  master's degrees across the academic spectrum, based on cutting-edge research.

Almost all are one year in duration and begin in September. 

Our master's degrees require either an upper or lower second-class bachelor's degree or equivalent from a recognised university. Some programmes may be flexible in this regard if you have several years of relevant work experience.

Applicants already in possession of a master's degree or doctorate are eligible for all programmes.

We normally require a personal statement, details of 1–2 referees, and your transcript(s). Some applicants also include a CV.

The deadline for applications to most programmes is 31 March, but some will close earlier. This will be indicated on the programme page in the prospectus .

The deadline for UCL accommodation for graduate students is 30 June.

Funding deadlines may be earlier than degree application deadlines – you should check as early as possible, ideally in September or October.

ARE YOU MOTIVATED?

• It may seem obvious, e.g. if it’s in the same field as your bachelor’s degree, but the content will not be the same, or the level. Tell us why you want to continue if this is the case.
• Are you a member of any relevant professional bodies, societies, or networks?
• Know the content of the programme. Even programmes with the same title can vary across different universities.
• Talk to staff and students directly: on open days, offer holder days, or one-to-one appointments.

ARE YOU CHOOSING THE RIGHT PROGRAMME FOR YOUR FUTURE AMBITIONS?

• Know the content of the programme. Even programmes with the same name can vary across different universities.
• Familiarise yourself with departmental research and areas of expertise.
• How will you apply your learning? What do you plan to do afterwards?

AFTER YOU HAVE APPLIED

• Talk to your referee(s) about your application and tell them to expect an email from UCL.
• Reviewing your application thoroughly takes time – usually 1–2 months, and sometimes longer.

Start a dialogue

You must begin by establishing a dialogue with a prospective supervisor. A speculative application without prior communication will be unsuccessful, regardless of your funding.

Start by sending an informal research enquiry either to an individual academic, or to the departmental contact. The process varies by department – get in touch if you are unsure. You can find a list of graduate tutors and research administrators on our Doctoral School website .

We receive many research enquiries, and they are reviewed alongside teaching and other day-to-day responsibilities. It is important to explore your prospective supervisor’s interests thoroughly before you contact them, and to communicate clearly and concisely.

Academics at UCL undertake a lot of interdisciplinary research – you should consider various departments, academics, and research groups, not just the most obvious.

On our  Institutional Research Information System (IRIS) you can search for academics and centres of research by keyword and filter the results.

You can also search Discovery , our online research repository. If you identify a paper that interests you, it is possible that one of the authors could be a suitable supervisor. 

Your email should include:

• Your qualifications (with institution, overall grade/classification, and year of graduation).
• A summary of your research experience.
• A summary of any published research.
• How you plan to fund your studies.

Research proposal

Research proposals are common in the arts and social sciences, but not usually required in STEM, where research is usually undertaken in groups. If applicable, you should clearly describe the topic, aims, objectives, and methodology as concisely as possible. In the first instance it should be around 500 words.

If a prospective supervisor is interested, then you can refine and develop your initial outline to produce a final proposal.

A proposal should include:

• A clear and descriptive working title.
• Some background, rationale, and any relevant issues.
• Your aims and objectives.
• A description of your theoretical framework and methodological approach.
• Sources or data you plan to use.
• What valuable and useful knowledge will come out of your research.

Application

An application is the final stage of the process and should only be submitted when requested, or when you have agreed on a research project with your supervisor.

You will be able to track the progress of your application via the UCL Applicant Portal – details will be sent to you when your application has been received.

You do not need evidence of your English language proficiency at the time of your application, but evidence is required before you can receive an unconditional offer.

The required level of English varies and will be listed on each programme page, levels 1 to 5.

If a test is required, we recommend booking a recognised English test by July, to allow time for us to process your results and for you to subsequently apply for a visa.

Nigeria is considered a majority English speaking country by UCL but not the UK Home Office. This means that we although we still need to verify your English language proficiency, in some instances this can be done through education leading to an academic qualification or work experience. UCL accommodation

We offer accommodation to both undergraduates and postgraduates  in our halls of residence (known as dormitories or hostels in some countries) and shared houses.

UCL accommodation is guaranteed  for undergraduate students if you apply by the 10 June deadline.

Postgraduate students are not guaranteed accommodation, but new international students are proritised. Places are allocated in the order applications are received, so you are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. 

The process for allocating accommodation is currently under review for 2024/25 and may change. 

We have single rooms, shared rooms, and studio apartments. Some are catered , with a restaurant inside the building, and others are self-catered, with access to a kitchen. Some are en-suite, while others have a shared bathroom. 

The location varies. Some are on campus, while others are a short walk away (see layered map below).

Accommodation is assigned based on your preferences – you are asked to rank variables pertaining to room type.

We have a limited amount of accommodation for couples and families . 

The Students' Union also maintains a page on accommodation options for couples and families .

For larger residences you should look to the private sector.

• Undergraduate and non-degree students: 10 June
• Postgraduate students: 30 June

Privately managed accommodation

Private halls of residence.

London has a growing number of private student accommodation options. They typically operate in the same way as our halls of residence, but on a for-profit basis.

Private landlords

London has a large, diverse, and fast-moving private accommodation market. Most rental properties are advertised no earlier than one month before they are available. We recommend viewing properties in person before paying any deposits or signing a contract. Students often travel to London a little earlier to undertake viewings. 

Because UCL is conveniently located for most London Underground lines and many bus routes (see the Travel section below), there is no one optimal area to live in; you can live quite far in terms of distance from campus, while maintaining a short commuting time.

UCL can act as your rent guarantor .

The University of London (UoL) Housing Services website has extensive advice , including a contract checking service, and property listings .

Most students share an apartment or house. Common ways of finding people to share with include offer holder groups on various platforms, social media, mutual acquaintances, and via the UoL Housing website .

In general, it is best to find childcare or a school that is conveniently located for your residence, as opposed to one that is close to UCL.

Childcare is available from the UCL Day Nursery on campus, or you can contact your local authority  for private nurseries, day-care, or childminders.

For primary and secondary education,  you can search for a local school . If your children are aged between 5 and 16 and in the UK as your dependants, they can attend state primary and secondary schools for free. However, schools may refuse places for children if they consider their stay in the UK to be too short. There are also private/prep school options across London.

Public transport

Our main campus in Bloomsbury is conveniently located for most of London because of its proximity to stations serving most London Underground (metro) lines, and nearby bus stops. This means that journeys can be deceptively short, relative to the actual distance. 

Google Maps  and Apple Maps  should give you accurate door-to-door journey times.

Travelling to UCL on a privately owned or hired bicycle is easy.

Showers and storage are widely available.

UCL and central London are easily accessible by public transport and private hire vehicles from Heathrow and Gatwick . We do not offer a pick-up service.

Uber operates in London, and you will be able to start your journey using airport Wi-Fi. The app will advise you on where to wait.

On weekdays and at times of high traffic, it may be quicker to take the Heathrow Express to Paddington station, before taking a taxi or Uber to your destination. The Uber pickup area at Paddington is the pre-booked  section of the taxi rank.

The tool is not exhaustive, and many students receive funding from non-partner external sources, such as employers, private and corporate foundations, government departments and NGOs.

We run regular university and department level events throughout the year, virtually and in person. If you have not yet applied, you can register your interest to hear about events relevant to your chosen field(s) of study.

A visa application usually takes 3–4 weeks. You normally begin the process on the GOV.UK website , before attending an appointment for biometrics and other checks at a local visa office.

If you have a conditional offer, you should allow for an extra 2–3 weeks, to allow us to process your documents and issue you with a CAS number. 

A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number is a unique 14-digit reference given to you by UCL, as your visa sponsor. It is required for your student visa application. 

You do not need to request a CAS. If you have firmly accepted a conditional or unconditional offer, UCL will email you around four months before the start date of your programme to confirm your details. Once your offer is unconditional and firmly accepted, and your details are confirmed, UCL will aim to issue your CAS within 5–10 working days, starting in July (i.e. no earlier than three months before your programme's start date).

CAS numbers are generated by the following offices:

Part-time student visa

UCL does not support part-time student visas . This is primarily because this visa does not allow you to bring dependants, nor does it allow you to work in the UK.

How to Write a Statement of Purpose for a Graduate Application

Have you been planning to obtain a scholarship abroad for grad school, or has it even been your dream to study overseas? How about fellowships? Have you come across that as well? Are you aware that you need a statement of purpose to apply for these?

If this is your first time hearing about an SOP, you are in the right direction, trust me. You are not alone if you have heard about it but don’t know how to go about its writing.

This article will guide you on how to write an outstanding statement of purpose for a graduate application.

What is a Statement of Purpose? 

A statement of purpose is an essay written to the admission board of a school, usually, when applying to a graduate school, be it for your master’s or PhD. A statement of purpose(SOP) reflects your personality to the admission committee for securing admission to a foreign university. 

A statement of purpose talks about your career path, goals, professional contribution, interests, and the driving force you have for pursuing a particular course. With a statement of purpose, a personal or direct connection is formed between you and the admission committee.

What do I mean by this?

You can present your CGPA, work experience, and all, but your statement of purpose expresses your feeling, passion, and motivation in applying for a program. 

This makes a statement of purpose an essential document that needs your rapt attention and concentration if you truly want that admission. 

Statement of Purpose vs. Personal Statement

A statement of purpose and a personal statement are two different things that can sometimes be used interchangeably. Depending on your school’s requirements, it can sometimes mean the same thing. Some schools require two essays, i.e. an SOP and a personal statement, as part of the required documents. While in some schools only need a statement of purpose.

The major difference between the two is that a personal statement requires you to write about your experience and how you overcame it, stating how that experience has sparked your interest in pursuing the program. So a personal statement is only talking about you and you alone, while an SOP has it all, your academic achievement, your experience, and even a personal statement that will be to the point and attention-catching.

How long should your statement of purpose be?

A statement of purpose range can sometimes be according to the school’s specifications. SOP usually ranges between 500 to 1500 words in length.

Your SOP is expected to give your desired university a brief knowledge about your academic and professional career, motivation, and aspiration even after completing the course.

Essential Tips to Consider When Writing an SOP 

Be original.

Yes, if you want your statement of purpose to be outstanding, you need to be yourself. You don’t copy someone else’s work for an SOP. Everyone’s story is unique in their way. You can only follow an outline to have your writing. 

Be intentional

When you want to write a statement of purpose, you need to write from your heart. Remember, you can only express a feeling you experience. Those experience you had is what can create that feeling you need to make your writing original.

Don’t overdo it

Remember that you are writing for a purpose, and don’t get carried away with your stories. Only essential points are needed. And your story must corroborate with the admission /program you are applying for.

Important Goals You Should Work Towards

• Explain why you should be considered for admission: Explain that you have the right academic background and the skills and skills essential for the program.
• Describe how the qualities of the department will enable you to address public development: explaining that what you are going to learn at the school will make a long-term change; that the program will make you a change maker.
• Show how you are likely to become a leader in your chosen field, contributing to societal development and becoming. Let it be known that you have a career aspiration, and this program in this prestigious institution will get you there. 

Writing Your Statement of Purpose 

Always have it at the back of your mind that thousands of applicants are applying for admission. Your first few lines and the coherence of your paragraph are opportunities to make use of to make your essay stand out. 

Do these first :

• Highlight the point you want to make 
• Develop the points
• Arrange those points accordingly into paragraphs
• Keep your writing lively
• Let it all flow and edit later
• Ensure coherency 

First paragraph: Introduction of SOP

The first paragraph should provide a brief introduction about you, your background story, relating it to your career objective and your life goal in general, and what you want to live to achieve. Here is an example;

“It has always been my biggest dream to study how the human body components work efficiently in some people and why others have to suffer from one disorder or another. Having to grow up in the company of a sick mother who always suffers from this or that is a huge driving force for me back then. My curiosity about why some people can live healthily and why others can’t, made me pursue my undergraduate degree in biochemistry. However, with my undergraduate studies, I can’t seem to have enough. The goal is to prevent many mothers from suffering in silence, and I haven’t gotten there yet.”

Looking at this, a brief introduction of the writer and background was indicated. You should have something captivating as well. 

Second paragraph: Why this course?

You can use this paragraph to explain what inspires you and what interests you to take the program. Take a look at this: 

“My industrial training program at a membrane biochemistry and biophysics laboratory during my undergraduate study in biochemistry opened my eyes to many research projects. Writing a personal statement for more than one course

Ok, it is easier if all five of your choices are the same. Throughout our personal statement advice , the message is clear: admissions tutors are very keen to hear why you've chosen that course, the reasons you're so enthusiastic about it, and what aspects you especially want to learn more about at uni.

This assumes that you have one, specific course in mind, because you can only write one personal statement in your application (in most cases – see below when you can write an additional personal statement ).

But what if your five choices aren't all the same?

With thousands of possible courses , it's hardly surprising that you may find it difficult narrowing down your choices to one specific subject or course.

It's possible that you may want to apply to two quite different courses, or to a mixture of single subject and joint or combined courses (with differing subjects). It isn't even unheard of for a student to apply successfully to five diverse courses with one application.

If you're in this scenario, take care with how you approach your application. But equally, don't be put off from applying to a variety of courses if you're genuinely interested in them.

So, how do I write a personal statement for more than one course?

Here are some personal statement pointers depending on how different the courses you're applying to are:

1. If there are only slight differences, or you've chosen joint or combined degrees with slightly different subject combinations...

This shouldn't be a problem. Just try to make everything in your statement as relevant as possible to all five choices. If you've included some joint or combined degree courses, make sure that each discipline or subject is addressed in some way.

2. If there are big differences between your course choices...

It might be possible to blend your statement in such a way that everything you write provides appropriate evidence of your skills, academic interests, and the way you think that's relevant to all of the courses you've chosen.

Alternatively, you could take the honest and transparent approach, and openly explain why you've chosen to apply to different courses by providing reasons or evidence for each.

Whichever approach you take, if some (or all) of your course choices are very competitive, then it's advisable to put across your commitment to your chosen subjects as earnestly as you can. 

3. If just one of your choices is completely different from the others...

It quite often happens that admissions staff will agree to accept a separate personal statement for that specific course, sent directly to them.

However, make sure you contact that particular university first, to make sure that they're aware.

There are also two specific circumstances where choosing one course that's different from the other four might be unavoidable. These are:

• If you're applying for medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine courses, where you're restricted to a maximum of four choices. In this situation, some courses at some universities will be happy to be your fifth choice, despite your statement not being directly relevant to them. However, we would advise contacting these universities directly to discuss your application. 
• If you're applying for a unique or unusual course that's only offered by a small number of universities, then it's quite likely that admissions staff will be used to advising on this issue, and may even provide guidance on their website – check with them directly.

Finally, if in doubt...

Go straight to the horse's mouth: the university themselves.

• First, check their website, as they may well have received previous enquiries about this and have published specific advice around it.
• Secondly, department staff at a lot of universities will be quite happy to answer a quick email or phone enquiry.
• Better still, go to an open day and speak to them face to face. While there will be many other students there too, your conversation may help you stand out later on.

Some courses won't have a problem if they can see that you've applied to a mixture of courses, but some may not make you an offer if your statement lacks focus, which is a risk when applying to multiple subjects.
