Ice Making Business

Are you about starting an ice block making business? If YES, here is a complete sample ice block making business plan template & feasibility report you can use for FREE .

Africa has a teeming population that is faced supply electricity problems which has forced many to use ice blocks to preserve their food and drinks. This demand for ice blocks not only from households but from caterers and traders has created a business opportunity for any enterprising entrepreneur.

Aside from the electricity supply problems, a large portion of Africa lies on the earth’s equator and also falls within the tropical climate region, which makes for these parts to face more heat than when compared to other temperate regions in the world.

This hot weather is also another reason why many people often need to take something that is chilled in order to not only rehydrate their bodies but also feel refreshed as well.

A Sample Ice Block Making Business Plan Template

1. industry overview.

The terrible electricity supply situation in Africa means that in many countries, less than 20 percent of the population has a connection to the main grid; this situation is not any better in the rural areas , as less than 5 percent of the population in these areas are connected to the main power grid.

This terrible electricity situation is one of the main reasons why the ice block business is booming and has become a lucrative business for entrepreneurs that are willing to go into it.

The cost of manufacturing ice blocks requires the ice block maker, electricity, water and nylon or plastic bag. A 10kg of block of ice will be able to preserve drinks for at most 2 days for a family with domestic needs, while it will help a drink vendor easily sell off his or her stock without having to buy block for at least the two days in question.

A  good ice block making machine that is of a little size can churn out 20 blocks in six hours and can go for an average of 3 production cycle a day, and with average prices of those blocks pegged at N100 in the southwestern states, one can easily turn a tidy profit monthly.

Anyone going into this business can pick a niche of ice blocks he or she intends to go into or go into all at once depending on the capacity. Several types of ice blocks that can be produced in Nigeria include ice tube, ice block, ice cube and cracked ice.

This business is a very hygienic one and due to that it is necessary that one source for clean water that is drinkable, such as water that is filtered, purified, distilled, from natural springs or water that is bottled. Asides water, the facility to be used is also very important for the growth of the business.

6. SWOT Analysis

Before starting an ice block business or any business for that matter, one has to understand the business concept in order to determine if the business is worth going into.

Because we intend to run a standard ice block making machine business, we have hired the services of a reputable business consultant here in Egbeda – Lagos, who not only understands the kind of business we are going into but also the area which we intend operating from to look critically at our business and help us determine how we are likely to make it here.

The business consultant will be making use of four attributes – strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats – in order to determine how likely our ice block making will succeed and compete favorably against its competitors. Below is a of the SWOT analysis that was conducted on behalf of Sam’s Ice Block Ventures here in Egbeda – Lagos;

Our strength lies in the fact that we are located in an area that is densely populated and has less supply of electricity compared to other parts of Lagos, this will make our service a highly demandable one for traders, caterers, and domestic users.

Also, we are offering various services in addition to our core service, which makes us to stand out from our competitors who are not offering half of what we are.

We also have in our employ dedicated and committed staffs that have the experience are attuned to our corporate goals and objectives and are willing to work hard to ensure that we attain our corporate goals and objectives. Also, our excellent customer culture is already giving us a high ranking as we have a high retention of our clients compared to that of our competitors.

Our weakness stem from the fact that we are relatively new in the business and as such might not have the required finance and staff capability to be able to get as much customers as we like or be able to compete favorably against our neighbors.

  • Opportunities

Egbeda is such a huge place in Lagos and so affords us enough opportunities especially as more people are yet to be aware of our core service as well as the additional services such as repair and maintenance of ice block making machines and cooling van services that we offer.

The high population figure here in Egbeda affords us the huge opportunities we will need to grow and expand our business.

Like every other business, we face certain threats to our business as well. One major threat that we will face is the arrival of a major competitor in the same location where we are operating from and offering the same services that we will be offering our customers.

Another threat is a major economic downturn that will cause low patronage from all our customers and lead to low revenue. Also, we are likely to face threats from those who are not in our line of business but who have large refrigerators and can put on their generating sets in order to gain a few customers from our target market.

Also, if the power problem improves and remains steady, we would see a drop in patronage for our services. As a business we are used to any threats that might crop up and are fully ready to combat any threat that our business is likely to face with strategies of our own.

7. MARKET ANALYSIS

  • Market Trends

Even though many people own their own refrigerators and fridges that are designed to cool their own drinks, these devices cannot however be carried by people anywhere they go and as such they have to buy from places where drinks are cool.

Most of these vendors who are everywhere buy these ice blocks and cool these drinks for their various customers. This means that the more people are out of their homes, the more they are likely to buy chilled water or drinks outside their homes and the more ice blocks are likely to be sold.

Asides from vendors, other people who also use ice blocks are caterers and those hosting an event that would then need to chill the drinks so that the various invited guests will have something cool and refreshing.  Ice blocks offer these people a convenient way at cooling their drinks instead of using a fridge or refrigerator that would hardly serve the purpose.

8. Our Target Market

Even though we are located at a very strategic location here in Egbeda – Lagos, we still had to conduct a market research on who our customers are likely to be and how best we would draft the strategies that will allow us gain a huge share of the target market.

The market research allowed us to understand the characteristics of our target market and also know what they would be expecting from us.

Therefore, the following are those that we will be offering our services to and they are; pure water vendors , soft drink vendors, caterers, households, event hosts, ice block vendors and market traders (meat and fish traders). They are those we will concentrate in marketing our services to.

Our competitive advantage

Our aim of starting an ice block making business is to be able to fill in the gap caused by the lack of electricity supply and ensure that those who require cool drinks are able to get one in order to stay hydrated and also able to feel refreshed especially when they are out and about under the heat of the sun.

However, in conducting our market survey, we have found that we are not the only ice block making business here in Egbeda – Lagos, which means we are likely to face stiff competition in offering our services to the target market.

The feasibility study we conducted allowed us to thoroughly assess our competitors and understand their strengths and weaknesses. Knowing their attributes also allowed us to be able to come up with certain competitive strategies that will be of huge advantage to us and allow us not only attract but retain a huge part o our customers.

The first competitive advantage we have is that we are offering more services than the average ice block making business. This means customers are more likely to patronize us because they know they will get more from us than they would from our competitors.

Also, we understand the value of our customers, which is why we are customer-centric and offer our customers the best care as compared to our competitors. We offer our customers incentives from time to time and also ensure that loyal customers get something from us especially when they refer others to us.

Finally, we employed dedicated and committed staffs that understand how best to run a business such as ours and how we can achieve our goals and objectives as a company. Our employees will be well taken care of as their welfare package will be amongst the best across similar startups such as ours in the industry. This will ensure that they put in their best and increase productivity for our business.

9. SALES AND MARKETING STRATEGY

  • Sources of Income

Sam’s Ice Block Ventures is a business that has been established with the intention of making profit in the ice block sector here in Nigeria and we will do all we can to ensure that we offer enough services that will generate enough revenue to boost and grow our bottom line as a company. Therefore, Sam’s Ice Block Ventures will therefore generate income by offering the following products and services;

10. Sales Forecast

Due to the nature of the society we are in and the circumstances we have found ourselves, we have found that there will always be a demand for chilled drinks and ice block, which means there will always be a demand for our products that will then translate into revenue generation for our business.

Our strategic position here at Egbeda – Lagos has us well positioned to take over a huge section of the target market in the area where we will be located and has us quite optimistic and allow us meet our set target in order to generate enough revenue and even turn over a profit within our first year of business, thereby growing the business as well as our clientele base.

However, it should be noted that our sales projections were done after a critical examination of the industry as we needed to analyze our chances and know how we were likely to fare in this business. The sales projections were gotten based on information and accurate data gleaned from similar startups such as ours here in Egbeda as well as all over Lagos State.

Below therefore are the sales projections that was conducted for Sam’s Ice Block Ventures depending on several assumptions and data that was made available during the stated period;

  • First Fiscal Year-: N980,000
  • Second Fiscal Year-: N1,600,000
  • Third Fiscal Year-: N3,000,000

N.B : It should be noted that the above projections were conducted based on what is obtainable in the industry as well as on certain assumptions, such as no competitor offering the same services arriving during the stated period, same state of lack of power supply and the downturn of the economy.

It shouldn’t be noted that should any of these factors change, there would be an increase or decrease in the figures projected above.

  • Marketing Strategy and Sales Strategy

Marketing is very important for our business because not only will we generate the needed revenue that will grow and sustain our company, but it will also give us a chance to promote the image of our company well. It is to this effect that we have created a marketing budget to be able to cater to all the efforts that it will take to bring in more customers to our company.

We intend also to ensure that we draft marketing and sales strategy that will allow us to penetrate the target market and gain a huge share of customers to our business.

Building a loyal database of customers takes time and we are fully prepared to do so in less time that it will normally take as we intend to deploy conventional and unconventional means in getting the customers we would need for our business.

Asides our core service, we would be offering complimentary services as well which are cooling services and maintenance and repairs of ice block machines or assistance in procuring new machines for our customers. We have empowered our marketing and sales team to draft the necessary strategies that will see us attaining our corporate sales goals and objectives.

We have therefore adopted the following strategies that will ensure that we do not only attract customers but make sure that they become loyal and that a huge percentage of them are retained. Therefore, parts of the marketing and sales strategies that we intend to adopt for Sam’s Ice Block Ventures are;

  • Ensure that we introduce our ice block making business to vendors, caterers and all the other stakeholders in the business here in Egbeda – Lagos
  • Throw a party to launch our ice block making business in order to gain the attention of our target market and increase awareness for our business.
  • Ensure that we place adverts in local newspapers and on three most popular radio and television stations listened to by our target market
  • Use our social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter as well as our official website to market our business
  • Distribute attractive handbills and fliers in target locations and paste some at bus stops
  • Place flexi banners around strategic points here in Egbeda and its environ

11. Publicity and Advertising Strategy

Even though we intend offering several services that is far better than that of our competitors, we would still need to ensure that we improve on our publicity so that we could not only increase awareness for our business and also compete favorably against our competitors but we would also generate revenue that will boost our business and allow us to grow.

We might need to engage the services of a brand consultant who thoroughly understands the market to help us draft publicity strategies that would be beneficial to our business. Also, the publicity strategies will help communicate our brand positively to our target market. Some of the platforms which we intend to use to promote and advertise our ice block making business are;

  • Position flexi banners at strategic locations so as to increase awareness for our brand and the services we offer
  • Distribute our fliers and handbills in target areas here at Egbeda
  • Use social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter to promote and advertise our business
  • Create an official website and use this to advertise our ice block making business
  • Place adverts on local newspapers and on certain radio and television stations
  • Ensure that our staff wear customized official tee-shirts when at the office or out at the field

12. Our Pricing Strategy

Deciding on what prices we would offer our products is very vital as we do not want to offer our customers prices that are too high and might cause them to patronize our competitors or prices that are too low that we would be running at a loss and therefore kill off our company completely.

There are several factors that we would consider when determining the prices for our products and they are; what our operating costs are, what our overheads are, what our competitors are offering and what the demand rate is.

In order to however attract more customers into patronizing our business, we intend to offer all our clients a discount on purchases for the first three months of operation. Even though this might cause us to run at a low margin, we are quite assured that we would not be running at a loss.

  • Payment Options

Due to the fact that we would not be only offering basic services but will be offering additional services that will bring in diverse customers, we intend to have a payment option that will suit all our various clients. The payment options that we therefore will offer to our various clients at Sam’s Ice Block Ventures;

  • Payment via cash
  • Payment via online bank transfer
  • Payment via Point of Sale (POS) Machine
  • Payment via Automated Teller Machines (ATM)

It should be noted that we carefully chose the above payment options in a bid to make it easier for our various clients and for us as well. We have made our bank account visible on our website especially for those who intend to pay before coming to our office to get the ice blocks.

13. Startup Expenditure (Budget)

While generating the necessary capital for a business is vital, it is necessary that one understands what to use the capital for in the first place so that the money would not be spent anyhow before the business starts off. There is no fixed amount to start an ice block making business and as such one’s capital could be low or high depending on the scale of the business the entrepreneur intends starting up.

Even though there are several kinds of ice block making machines, one has to be careful to get the genuine one so that one does not end up buying a product that will continually need repairs which will in turn drain the revenue of the business.

Therefore, in order to start our ice block making business here in Egbeda – Lagos, there are certain requirements we need to fulfill and they are listed below;

  • Total fee for registering a business venture in Lagos – Nigeria – N40,000
  • Cost of hiring a business consultant – N30,000
  • Obtaining of licenses, permits as well as for other legal expenses – N30,000
  • Marketing promotion expenses for general activities as well as for grand opening of our ice block making business – N20,000
  • Insurance coverage (general liability and workers’ compensation) – N10,000
  • Cost of renting a facility for a year and carrying out renovations – N120,000
  • Operational cost for the first 3 months (salaries of employees and payment of light and other utility bills) – N100,000
  • Other start-up expenses stationery, phone and computers – N10,000
  • Cost of start-up inventory (ice block making machine, preservation units) – N1,000,000
  • Cost o purchasing a fairly used van – N650,000
  • Cost of purchasing furniture – N10,000
  • Cost of launching a website – N20,000
  • Cost of throwing a small party – N20,000
  • Miscellaneous – N50,000

From the above estimate, we would require the sum of N1,860,000 in order to successfully start and run our ice block making business here in Egbeda – Lagos State. It should be noted that the amount covers workers’ salaries, purchasing ice block making equipment, a van as well as renting a facility for use for at least a year.

Generating Funding / Startup Capital for Sam’s Ice Block Business

Having the necessary capital to start a business is very important, because no matter how fantastic a business idea is, without the right funds, it remains just an idea; and it is only finance that can make the idea to become a reality. This is why having finance is very important, to start up the business and then to run the business without hitches.

Sam’s Ice Block Ventures is a business that is fully owned by Mr. Sam Adeyanju, which he intends handing over to his immediate family when it is time and so they do not seek to welcome any external investor into their business, which is why they have decided to source for capital from two sources.

The areas where they intend generating start-up capital from are;

  • Generate part of the start-up capital from personal savings
  • Source for soft loans from family members and friends

N.B : We were able to generate the sum of N1,860,000 with which to start our business. We got N1,600,000 from personal savings and a soft loan of N260,000  from family members and friends.

14. Sustainability and Expansion Strategy

Every business that is established needs several factors in order to remain sustainable and expand in future as it deems fit. The factors necessary for sustainability and expansion measures are building a solid business structure, conducting a thorough marketing and publicity strategy and also reinvesting back into the business.

Building a solid business structure is very important to us as a new business as we know that this will mean us having fewer hitches than we ordinarily should. We intend therefore to go the extra mile in ensuring that we get the best employees to work for our company.

The employees we will get are those that not only align with our corporate values and objectives but also understand how to take a business from where we are to where we intend to be. We will also ensure that we pay our employees better than other similar start-ups.

It is important that we generate enough revenue for our business that will allow us remain rock solid, which is why we have drafted effective marketing and publicity strategies that we will use in generating the needed revenue for our company and also create awareness as well.

This will allow us compete favorably against our competitors. Finally, we will ensure that we re-invest a part of our earnings back into the business. This action will allow us to have a strong bottom line and sustain our company as well as expand it.

Getting Started With Your Ice Vending Machine Business Plan

  • Land Owners

Posted on: December 18, 2019 |

Your business plan outlines the most important aspects of your new business. Your plan can help you make important decisions, obtain financing, and define the future of your business. Businesses of all sizes and types should have this organizational tool. In this blog post, we’ll walk through an example ice vending machine business plan which you can use as a roadmap for your own ice vending machine business plan.

While there is a recommended format for a business plan , all businesses are different. We’ve simplified the traditional business plan format to highlight the elements that are more important to the vending machine business. Depending on your situation, you may want to add, remove, or change these sections and the examples provided.

A man working on his ice vending business plan

Summary and Description

Your summary and description should describe what and where your business is, what you provide, who you are serving, and an overview of your team and structure. You should also include your competitive advantages, and why your business will be successful. The following is a brief example of your ice vending machine business description to get you started. We’ll use a hypothetical business, Example Ice, made by hypothetical owner Sara Example. Depending on the goals you have with your business plan, and the details of your business, you may wish to expand on it.

Example Ice provides fast, clean, bagged ice for consumers in the Example City area. Example Ice begins with a single mid-sized ice vending machine designed to serve moderate traffic at a pivotal intersection. This machine paves the way for Example Ice to expand across the Example City area. Led by Sara Example, with supporting real estate location and cloud-connected remote management services provided by Ice House America, Example Ice has the potential for stable, reliable growth in this underserved market.

Example Ice taps into the area’s core working demographic, manufacturing employees. These residents are currently overpaying for less sanitary ice at convenience store locations in order to fill coolers on their way to work. Example Ice fills this need by providing instantaneous, affordable ice made on-location from a machine directly on the central manufacturing commute route.

Market Analysis

Market analysis is a critical part of any business plan. This is the part of your ice vending machine business plan where you will provide more details about your target market, growth potential, competition, and industry outlook. Supporting documents, such as maps, consumer surveys, traffic patterns, and demographic information, may be helpful here. These documents are generally appended to the end of your business plan, with reference points within the plan. Here is an example market analysis overview paragraph to get you started.

Example Ice primarily serves manufacturing workers in the Sample District of Example City. This demographic has been steadily growing in Example City as Parent Manufacturing Company continues to expand (see appendix A). The primary traffic routes to and from the central manufacturing facilities are from Example Street A and Example Road B (see appendix B). Example Ice’s introductory, medium-traffic ice kiosk will be placed along this route at Example Intersection.

With visibility from this popular route, including obvious signage and the machine itself, Example Ice can expect between 22,000 and 30,000 annual visits. Ice demand peaks are expected between June and August with the addition of seasonal road construction workers in the area, with demand lows between December and February as cooler temperatures decrease the need for ice.

Currently, consumers purchase transportable ice in this area from convenience stores, including primarily Store A, Store B, and Store C (see appendix C). However, consumers have expressed dissatisfaction with this option due to the following: the inability to break up ice from the bag, the unsanitary nature of pre-packaged ice, the expense, wait times at the store, and low ice inventory (see appendix D). Example Ice solves these problems, providing a superior customer experience at a lower price.

Organization and management

How you legally arrange your business will depend on tax and finance implications, among other factors. Since ice vending machine businesses require minimal upkeep and no inventory, many business owners choose a sole proprietorship. This is a simple business arrangement that requires little preparation. Other owners seek to separate their assets using an LLC. This is a good option if you are i nvesting in an ice vending machine for retirement . If you are investing with a friend or family member, you might consider making a partnership, including a contract for financial responsibilities, revenue division, and buy-out options.

Using our previous example, here is a simple organization and management overview with a sole proprietorship arrangement.

Sara Example is the owner and sole proprietor of Example Ice. As the former manager of Best Example Restaurant for 7 years, Sara Example has first-hand experience in running and managing a small business. Sara was in charge of managing Best Example Restaurant’s invoices, inventory, payroll, and financial documents. She also made marketing recommendations and advertising decisions that increased Best Example Restaurant’s annual sales by 15% for three consecutive years.

In this section, it’s important to describe why this product is important, how it serves the customers, and opportunities you may have for business growth in the industry. For some businesses with technologically advanced products or complex service structures, this can be a lengthy section. For your ice vending machine business plan, you are describing a product and process that everyone is familiar with, so less description is needed. Here’s an example.

Transportable ice is a convenience for some and a necessity for others. For employees working long hours in manufacturing and other fields where working conditions can be hot, dry, and uncomfortable, a cooler full of ice helps to make the work day bearable. For perishable lunch items and drinks, it’s a necessity. Example Ice seeks to fill this need in a way that is faster, cleaner, and cheaper than currently available options.

Ice vending machines provide readily bagged ice that does not clump together like store-bought ice, making it easier to transport to a cooler. Since it is made on-location from purified water, it is also more hygienic; store-bought ice trades hands numerous times during the bagging process, and may sit in containers for days. Finally, ice vending machines make ice faster and more affordable, with wholesale prices and no need to wait in line.

Marketing and advertising is essential for all businesses. If customers don’t know where you are or what you provide, they’re unlikely to visit your business. In this section of your ice vending machine business plan, describe how you will get your target market’s attention and convert them into consumers. This strategy will vary by location, the type of ice machine you have, and other factors. Here is a simple example.

Example Ice’s first ice vending machine location at Example Street A and Example Street B is ideal to attract commuters going towards manufacturing plants. The machine itself will be visible from the road and clearly marked. To maximize visibility, prominent signs featuring ice prices and competitive advantages will also be placed in the adjacent lot. When motorists stop at the intersection, they will be able to clearly read these signs.

To attract new customers, Example Ice will utilize Ice House America’s online ice management system, and provide discounts and free ice to customers during peak hours. These discounts will also be featured on the nearby signage.

Funding Request

If you are using your business plan to obtain financing for your first (or additional) ice vending machine, this will be particularly important. Your funding request should explain how much money you need, what you will use it for, and your projected payback period. Again, this section will differ depending on your situation. You might use this to apply for a business loan through a bank, or Ice House America can help you obtain financing through the Small Business Association.

Example Ice is seeking a $30,000 business loan for the first ice vending machine location. This, in addition to Sara Example’s personal investment of $20,000, will fully cover the cost of the machine. Utilizing expected annual sales derived from traffic numbers and benchmark ice vending machine sales in comparable areas, Example Ice expects to repay the loan amount in 20 years at 4.5% interest.

Now that you have a starting point for your ice vending machine business plan, it’s time to get started. If you have a location and financing options in mind, you can get started on your own. If you’re not sure, or you’d like more information about choosing a location and loan options available, contact us.

Ice plays a vital role in various industries from keeping drinks cool on a hot day to supplying essential medical services. And with the ever-growing demand for this refreshing necessity, the ice-making business can be a profitable and stable venture to explore.

Whether you’re a seasoned entrepreneur or just starting your journey into the business world, this guide will equip you with the essential steps to turn your ice-cold idea into a thriving reality. So, grab a metaphorical ice pack, and keep reading!

Identifying Demand

Market Research

Conducting thorough market research is a critical first step when starting an ice making business. Analyzing the demand for ice in the target market and identifying potential customers with specific ice needs help you grasp the requirements of different customer groups.

Don’t forget to study seasonal demand fluctuations for ice, which can vary based on factors such as weather patterns, local events, and industry-specific requirements.

Customer Segmentation

Use customer segmentation to optimize your production processes and efficiently allocate resources.

Moreover, recognizing seasonal demand fluctuations within each customer segment is crucial for maintaining adequate inventory levels throughout the year. This segmentation approach allows you to adapt their operations to meet varying demands during peak seasons or specific events.

Tip: Effective market research and customer segmentation are key elements in establishing a successful ice making business. By gaining insights into demand dynamics and customer preferences, entrepreneurs can position their ventures for long-term growth and profitability.

Buying Ice Making Equipment

Quality Ice Making Machine

Investing in top-notch commercial or industrial ice machines and storage facilities is paramount for an ice making business.

When choosing ice production machinery, you should consider the specific requirements of their target market and customer segments. For instance, if there is a high demand for packaged ice in a particular area, investing in packaging equipment may be necessary to meet your consumers’ needs.

Tip: “The quality of your ice making equipment can significantly influence the success of your business. Investing in reliable machinery ensures consistent production and helps maintain high product standards.”

Maintenance and Upkeep

Proper maintenance for the ice making machine isn’t just about extending that equipment’s lifetime, it’s also key for peak performance and efficiency.

This includes cleaning , lubrication, and inspection of components to identify any potential issues before they escalate.

Speaking of savings, having qualified pros on staff who know their way around this machinery can prevent a world of avoidable headaches. Skilled techs can promptly troubleshoot problems, minimize downtime, and make sure the whole production line is operating within safe parameters.

Legal Requirements

There’s a bunch of red tape you gotta cut through first if you want to keep things legit. We’re talking permits, licenses, the whole nine yards.

And that’s just the start – you also have to make sure you’re following all the environmental rules and regulations for an operation like this. If you want this ice making biz to chill long-term, ensuring a smooth operation from the start is essential.

Permits and Licenses

At the core, you’ll need to obtain the proper business licenses and permits related to food production, manufacturing, and commercial operations. The ice making process itself is heavily regulated when it comes to health codes, safety standards, and environmental compliance.

The licensing requirements can admittedly get granular and complex, varying from state to state and even locally. That’s why business owners must do their due diligence upfront.

Getting legalities lined up isn’t just about checking boxes, it’s about building credibility and trust with your customers, suppliers, and stakeholders.

Environmental Compliance

Environmental compliance is an integral aspect of running an ice making business responsibly. It encompasses practices such as waste disposal, energy efficiency, and adherence to environmental protection laws.

Prioritizing energy efficiency offers a dual benefit – it cuts operational costs while promoting sustainability.

Marketing Strategy

Crafting an airtight marketing blueprint is mission-critical for anyone who is looking to cut through the noise.

Targeting Customers

Whether it’s providing bulk ice supplies to hospitality businesses or catering to event organizers, a tailored marketing strategy ensures that the right message reaches the right audience.

Moreover, analyzing the startup expenses for an ice making business enables you to allocate resources. By evaluating the cost of acquiring new customers against potential returns, you will optimize your marketing budget while maximizing outreach efforts.

Branding and Promotion

Creating a strong brand identity involves developing a compelling brand story that resonates with target customers while highlighting unique selling propositions. Use online channels such as social media platforms and websites, along with offline methods like local events or partnerships.

Tip: “Crafting a targeted marketing strategy that resonates with specific customer segments is essential for establishing a strong presence in the competitive ice making industry.” New Opportunities Another thing you should take into consider before starting an ice or ice cube business is to observe those potential opportunities in the market. These are some trending and creative marketing ideas: Focusing on commercial/industrial clients like construction sites, events, etc. rather than residential. Providing specialized types of ice like cube ice, flake ice or clear ice for mixed drinks. Capitalizing on a very local, niche market if there is huge demand in a particular area. Diversifying into selling other related products like bottled water.

The key is to come up with more creative ways to differentiate your ice making business and generate new revenue streams. With the right angle, you’ll find a new way to reform this traditional business.

Financial Viability

Cost analysis.

A comprehensive cost analysis involves evaluating the initial investment required to set up the business, including expenses related to acquiring ice making equipment, securing permits, and establishing operational facilities.

Additionally, assessing ongoing operational costs such as electricity, water, maintenance, and labor expenses is essential for developing a clear understanding of the financial commitments involved.

Profitability Projections

Estimating the potential profitability of an ice making business entails considering various factors. Market demand plays a significant role in determining the revenue-generating capacity of the business.

But revenue is just one side of the profit equation. You also have to meticulously account for all those pesky operating costs – equipment, facilities, labor, utilities, the whole nine yards. Sizing up those expenditures against your pricing strategy is crucial for projecting real bottom-line profits, not just top-line sales.

Final Thoughts

The path to launching a successful ice making operation may have its slippery spots, but tackle each phase with preparation and patience.

With meticulous planning and a commitment to quality products and service, your ice making business can capitalize on rising demand in a refreshingly profitable way.

Before long, you’ll be the one supplying the crowd-cooling refreshment that every good time depends on. What could be cooler than that?

By consistently delivering premium ice products and providing exceptional customer service, FrostyIce aims to become the go-to supplier for businesses seeking reliable and high-quality ice solutions.

In summary, FrostyIce's structured business approach, dedication to hiring skilled professionals, and commitment to innovation and growth will enable the company to achieve its objectives and become the leading provider of premium ice products in the United States.

Handbook for catchment water demand and use

Darren Lumbroso

The Handbook responds to the growing need to balance supply-side and demand-side approaches to managing scarce water resources in catchments and river basins. It recognises that a plethora of research and methodologies are readily available to assist planners and managers to assess water resource availability in a catchment yet little is available to assist in assessing water demand and use. The Handbook therefore aims to fill this gap by bringing together a range of methodologies, examples of their application, supporting information and key references. The Handbook is aimed at professionals and practitioners in the southern African region. It provides the user with a range of appropriate methods for estimating water demand and use across a range of water uses including environmental, urban, industrial, rural domestic and agricultural sectors. Guidance on the advantages and disadvantages of different assessment techniques are provided and the texts supplemented by worked examples. Methods suitable for forecasting long-term water demand and use are also included.

Market Analysis/Trends

If we intent capturing a large share of the market, then we should be able to bring out innovative services not available in other ice cream factories. Hence, we have analysed the ice cream market and have noticed that although many ice cream factories are trying to bring out better ice cream flavors to satisfy their customers, they either neglect the needs of those who are not enthusiastic about change.

This is an area we will be exploring as we will not leave this segment of the market unattended to.

While focusing our services in making sure we formulate our own signature ice cream flavors, we will ensure that the old flavors are still maintained for the benefit of this segment of our market.

Our Target Market

Our ice cream factory business has a target market consisting of clients residing within our operational area, the corporate world, students, tourist, and celebrities among a wide segment of our target market. Also, our factories will be located within areas where foot traffic is high, such as malls, central business districts among other busy areas. Marketing and Sales Strategy

Delight Ice cream will hire the services of an experienced marketing and sales expert to guide and oversee our marketing and sales operations. We will be offering the best services, going all out to please our clients by making our services cheaper that what is obtainable in the market. This is in a bid to capture new clients. This strategy will be publicized to ensure that new clients try out our services. Competitive Advantage

At Delight Ice Cream, what sets us apart from our competition is the different variety of ice cream which will continually be produced to ensure that we have more varieties of ice cream on offer at rock bottom prices and also providing the very best flavors. This will be done with utmost dedication by a well motivated staff. Financial Projection

It is projected that within our first 3 years of operations, our revenue will experience a leap, which will be due to the effort put in to produce the best products, at pocket friendly prices, taking full advantage of turn over from our high volume sales. This is represented by the simple table below

– 1st Year $250,000 – 2nd Year $750,000 – 3rd Year $1,500,000

Publicity and Advert Strategy

We will be deploying the very best of tools to advertise our products and services to the general public. This includes the use of social media, our website, banners, fliers and erection of bill boards at strategic places to ensure that it achieves the highest exposure to public viewing.

Adverts will be placed in yellow pages and also, the local TV and radio stations will be used in advertising our services. Payment Channels

At Delight Ice Cream LLC, we will be making available all payment options/channels for our esteemed clients. These channels will include POS, acceptance of cheques, mobile banking, and cash payments among other payment options as they become available.

Sustainability and Expansion Strategy

There will be continuity in our business as it is a company owned by a group of investors, through shareholding, thus, as the need may arise, it will remain open for new investors to own a share of Delight Ice Cream LLC, as well as existing investors selling their shares.

Our expansion will be in the form of the establishment of factory outlets across all the states within the US within our first 10 years of operations.

This ice cream factory business plan sample has been designed to act as a guide for those in need of one but without adequate knowledge on how to construct one. It is hoped that this will provide the much needed help in writing a comprehensive ice cream factory business plan .

Ice Cream Shop Business Plan

Ice cream shop business plan.

Over the past 20+ years, we have helped over 10,000 entrepreneurs and business owners create business plans to start and grow their ice cream shop businesses. On this page, we will first give you some background information with regards to the importance of business planning. We will then go through an ice cream shop business plan template step-by-step so you can create your plan today.

Download our Ultimate Business Plan Template here >

What Is an Ice Cream Business Plan?

A business plan provides a snapshot of your ice cream shop business as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategy for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.

Why You Need a Ice Cream Shop Business Plan

If you’re looking to start an ice cream shop business, or grow your existing ice cream shop business, you need a business plan. A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your ice cream shop business in order to improve your chances of success. Your ice cream shop business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

Funding Sources for Ice Cream Shop Businesses

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for an ice cream shop business are personal savings, credit cards, bank loans and angel investors. With regards to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to confirm that your financials are reasonable, but they will also want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business.

The second most common form of funding for an ice cream shop business is angel investors. Angel investors are wealthy individuals who will write you a check. They will either take equity in return for their funding, or, like a bank, they will give you a loan.

Finish Your Business Plan Today!

If you want to start an ice cream shop business or expand your current one, you need a business plan. Below are links to each section of your ice cream shop business plan template:

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your Executive Summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the type of ice cream shop business you are operating and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have an ice cream shop business that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of ice cream shop businesses?

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan. For example, give a brief overview of the ice cream shop industry. Discuss the type of ice cream shop business you are operating. Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers. Provide a snapshot of your marketing plan. Identify the key members of your team. And offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Analysis

In your company analysis, you will detail the type of ice cream shop business you are operating.

For example, you might operate one of the following types of ice cream shop businesses:

  • Self serve ice cream shop : this type of ice cream shop business allows customers to fill their own containers with desired ice cream flavors and toppings.
  • Ice cream truck: ice cream trucks are a convenient way to reach more customers in different areas.
  • Gourmet ice cream shop: this type of ice cream shop caters to customers seeking gourmet flavors and a high-quality experience.

In addition to explaining the type of ice cream shop business you will operate, the Company Analysis section of your business plan needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to question such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of customers served, number of positive reviews, amount of monthly revenue etc.
  • Your legal structure. Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry analysis, you need to provide an overview of the ice cream shop.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the ice cream shop industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your strategy, particularly if your research identifies market trends.

The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your ice cream shop business plan:

  • How big is the ice cream shop industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your ice cream shop business? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your ice cream shop business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: children, parents, teenagers, and restaurateurs.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of ice cream shop you operate. Clearly, parents would want different service options and would respond to different marketing promotions than teenagers, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, include a discussion of the ages, genders, locations and income levels of the customers you seek to serve. Because most ice cream shops primarily serve customers living in their same city or town, such demographic information is easy to find on government websites.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

With Growthink’s Ultimate Business Plan Template you can finish your plan in just 8 hours or less!

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other ice cream shops.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t direct competitors. This includes grocery shops, convenience stores, and ice cream vending machines or kiosks. You need to mention such competition to show you understand that not everyone who wants ice cream will go to an ice cream shop.

With regards to direct competition, you want to describe the other ice cream shop businesses with which you compete. Most likely, your direct competitors will be ice cream shops located very close to your location.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their businesses and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What types of flavors do they offer?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide more ice cream flavors?
  • Will you provide services that your competitors don’t offer?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a ice cream shop business plan, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of ice cream shop that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering. For example, in addition to ice cream, will you provide comfortable seating, table service, or on-site entertainment?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the location of your ice cream shop. Document your location and mention how the location will impact your success. For example, is your ice cream shop located in a busy retail district, shopping plaza, mall, etc. Discuss how your location might provide a steady stream of customers.

Promotions : The final part of your ice cream shop marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertising in local papers and magazines
  • Reaching out to local websites
  • Social media marketing
  • Local radio advertising

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your ice cream shop, including making ice cream, serving customers, and maintaining equipment.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to serve your 1000th customer, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to open a new ice cream shop location or launch an ice cream shop franchise.

Management Team

To demonstrate your ice cream shop business’ ability to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing ice cream shop businesses. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act like mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in managing ice cream shops or successfully running small businesses.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.

Income Statement : an income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenues and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you serve 500 customers per month or 1,000? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets : Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your ice cream shop, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt. For example, let’s say a local restaurant owner approached you with a $25,000 contract to provide ice cream for their restaurant. Let’s further assume the contract would cost you $25,000 to fulfill in terms of increased staffing costs and supplies. Well, in most cases, you would have to pay that $25,000 now for employee salaries, equipment, etc. But let’s say the company didn’t pay you for 180 days. During that 180-day period, you could run out of money.

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a ice cream shop business:

  • Location build-out including design fees, construction, etc.
  • Cost of equipment like dipping cabinets, walk-in refrigerators, and blenders
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Taxes and permits
  • Legal expenses

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your location lease or a blueprint of your shop.   Summary Putting together a business plan for your ice cream shop is a worthwhile endeavor. If you follow the template above, by the time you are done, you will truly be an expert. You will really understand the ice cream shop industry, your competition, and your customers. You will have developed a marketing plan and will really understand what it takes to launch and grow a successful ice cream shop.

A Sample Business Plan of Launching an Ice-making Plant

Business Overview

The terrible power supply situation in Africa means that in many countries, less than 20 percent of the population has access to the main power grid; this situation is not any better in the rural areas, as less than five percent of the population in these areas have access to the main power grid. The terrible electricity situation is one of the main reasons why the ice distribution business is booming and has become a profitable business for entrepreneurs that are willing to go into it.

The cost of manufacturing ice requires ice making machines, electricity, water, and miscellaneous items. A block ice of 10kg will be able to preserve drinks for at most two days for a family’s domestic needs, while it will help a drink vendor quickly sell off his or her stock without having to buy ice for at least two days.

A  good ice-making machine that is of small size can produce 20 blocks in six hours and can harvest three production cycles a day, and with average prices of those ice blocks at $100 in the southwestern states, one can easily turn a tidy profit monthly.

Anyone going into this business can pick a niche of ice blocks he or she intends to go into or go into all at once depending on the capacity. Several types of ice that can be produced include ice tube, ice block, ice cube, and scaled ice.

This business is a very hygienic one and due to that it is necessary that one source for clean water that is drinkable, such as water that is filtered, purified, distilled, bottled or from natural springs. Asides water, the equipment to be used is also essential for the business growth.

Executive Summary

Before starting our business, we need to secure all the necessary permits and licensing from the local administration.

We are in business to provide various services to all our customers. This means that we will involve in wholesale, retail, distribution of ice, cooling services, ice-making equipment, and even help in maintaining or repairing their machines for various customers.  Our vision is to ensure that we are renowned for our multiple services and to be the preferred brands of many.

We intend to operate a transparent business that is ethics inclined, and that’s because we are customer-centric as we place a high value on our customers and are ready to go the extra mile to ensure that our customers’ expectations are not only met but exceeded. We intend to treat all our loyal customers well by ensuring that we offer them discounts during certain times and periods, this will allow them to remain loyal to us and also help refer others to us as well.

We intend to build a solid business structure and are willing to go the extra mile in ensuring that we get only competent and hardworking staff to work in our company. We have laid down procedures and structures; therefore, only those who align with our vision and philosophy and understand how to take our business from where we are to where we intend it to be, will be chosen to work for our company. We will ensure that we inculcate the habit of best practices amongst our employees.

Also, to keep our employees happy and productive, we intend to ensure that we not only create an environment that is conducive for them but that we will pay them well and also ensure that they have great welfare packages better than what their counterparts in similar start-ups such as ours are having. Our facility is one that is also easily accessible for our employees and is one that will not be inconvenient for them to get to every morning.

Finally, Glacier ice factory is wholly owned and managed by Mr. Samuel Adeyo who has more than ten years experience in the ice distribution business and will bring his business expertise to bear. Mr. Adeyo’s wealth of experience will also ensure that we attain the heights we intend to and that we can compete favorably against our competitors.

So let’s proceed to the business planning section.

Why Start an Ice Skating Rink Business?

Starting a business usually requires cash and if you have sufficient cash to invest in a thriving business in the united states of America, then you should consider starting an ice skating rink business. The truth is that creating a business that targets children and adults is one sure way of making money especially if the business is laced with fun.

It is important to state that the real deal when it comes to starting an ice skating rink business is securing a facility that is large enough to contain not just the ice skating tracks and other outdoor games for children, but also a restaurant, a place where parents/guardians can hangout while the wards catch fun and of course enough parking space. It might take you months to get an ideal facility, so it is better that you inform your real estate agent well in advance to help you with the search.

Starting a standard ice skating rink business is akin to starting a family entertainment center and it can be expensive, but you can be rest assured that you will make your money within a few years of launching the business. The fact that you are going to secure a facility big enough to accommodate the activities and services you intend offering means that you must truly be prepared for this business.

If your ice skating facility is of high standard and is located close to a residential estate with loads of growing families, then you will attract loads of children especially on weekends and special holidays.

So, if you have decided to start an ice skating rink business, then you should ensure that you carry out feasibility studies and market survey. Business plan is yet another very important business document that you should not take for granted when launching your own business.

Below is a sample ice skating rink business plan template that can help you to successfully write your own with little or no difficulty.

A Sample Ice Skating Rink Business Plan Template

1. industry overview.

Businesses that operate in the Ice Skating Rink industry basically manage ice rinks for recreational and professional use. These ice rinks offer ice skate rentals, ice skating classes and provide other amenities including indoor sports.

If you are familiar with the industry, you would realize that the industry leveled out over the past five years after melting for a period during the recession. Demand for ice activities, which tend to be relatively more expensive than other forms of sports and exercise, took longer to rebound after the recession, as unemployment remained high and wages stagnated.

On the other hand, a resurgence in interest in ice hockey has helped replenish demand for ice rink management companies, raising revenue and encouraging the development of new facilities. The industry is expected to continue to grow over the next five years, driven by improvements in disposable income, consumer confidence and health awareness.

The Ice Skating Rink industry is really thriving in some parts of the world especially in developed countries such as United States of America, Canada, united kingdom, Norway, Russia, Poland and Sweden et al. Statistics have it that in the United States of America alone, there are about 406 licensed and registered ice skating rink and recreational centers.

The industry is responsible for directly employing about 12,115 employees and the industry rakes in a whooping sum of $618 million annually with an annual growth rate projected at 2.2 percent between 2012 and 2017. It is important to state that no establishment has a lion share of the available market in this industry.

A recent research published by IBISWORLD shows that the Ice Rinks industry displays a low level of market share concentration; the top four industry players are estimated to account for less than 5.0 percent of the industry in 2016.

Most of the industry’s enterprises operate one to two rinks and earn less than $1.0 million in annual revenue. Fragmented industries such as the Ice Rinks industry have medium barriers to entry and moderate competition between businesses.

Larger industry players with several ice rinks have grown in the past five years, as ice rinks in distress sought acquisition in the post – recessionary period. Nonetheless, the number of industry businesses have grown in the five years to 2016 while the number of establishments have also grown, indicating that the industry is still expanding.

Starting an ice skating rink business in the United States of America can be stressful, as it requires enough cash to acquire land large enough to accommodate the kind of facility that can comfortably attract families.
