Journal of Praxis in Higher Education

First call for papers: 2022

The Journal of Praxis in Higher Education (JPHE) is now calling for papers for its 2022 issues. JPHE is a journal dedicated to high quality research on, or scholarship related to, praxis within higher education teaching, learning, research, and activities aimed at impact on wider society (e.g., policy analysis, activist research, or capacity building). Our previous issues are available here: https://journals.hb.se/jphe/ .

Praxis in higher education can be broadly interpreted and engaged. In an era characterised by internationalisation, increasing accountability, strong ties between universities, national and regional economies, and the imperatives of sustainable development, higher education  communities are under great pressure to meet ever-increasing competing and sometimes conflicting demands. The moral-political dimension of higher education and attention to our civic responsibilities are arguably sometimes forgotten in the daily struggle to meet very real demands. This journal has been established with this concern in mind, and seeks to promote continued debate and deeper exploration of some of the key responsibilities of, and tensions pervading, higher education (see the JPHE’s editorial, Vol 1, Issue, 1 ). Our explicit goal is intentionally informing and facilitating transformational contributions that are socially just and sustainable.

JPHE is fully peer-reviewed, applying a double-blind review system to ensure the integrity of the review process. As a web-only journal committed to the widest possible dissemination of research and intellectual debate, JPHE is open access and does not demand any charges of its authors. Accepted contributions are published under Creative Commons licensing (Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International Public License. For further information on that, please visit the Creative Commons website for complete terms (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/legalcode).

JPHE welcomes contributions from all academic traditions, and is not confined to any particular substantive definitions, theoretical stance or specific methodologies. A submitted paper must, however, present novel and interesting scholarly work, and do so in a clear and concise manner. Topics to guide submissions include, but are not limited to

  • Consequences of particular pedagogies, policies and developments in higher education;
  • Justice and other ethical considerations associated with higher education, including implications for politics, society and sustainability;
  • Changing conditions for teaching, learning, researching, leading, and/or professional learning in higher education;
  • Transformative and responsive education;
  • Power and agency in higher education;
  • Inclusive education and practices in higher education;
  • Criticality and/or fostering critical thinking in higher education;
  • The varying purposes of higher education;
  • The concept of praxis and related concepts (e.g., praxis development, practical wisdom, practical judgement, phronesis);
  • Research approaches as, for, and about praxis in higher education.

A submitted paper must be anonymized, prior to submission and sent as a separate file (named “[title of the paper]”). The title page with author information and an abstract (200 words maximum) should be submitted as a separate file (named “Title page”). Both files should be submitted as .doc or .docx files. Submitted manuscripts are assigned to one of the journal editors, who then recruits qualified reviewers with an expertise within the relevant area. The International Review of Education – Journal of Lifelong Learning (IRE) is an international, scholarly, refereed journal published by Springer and edited by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning. It publishes articles from all regions of the world and serves policy-makers and practitioners, as well as the research community.

The world’s longest-running international journal of education, IRE gives priority to papers on adult education, non-formal education, adult literacy, open and distance learning, vocational education, and formal education viewed through the lens of lifelong learning.

IRE is a hybrid journal, which aims to publish the best new scholarship from around the world, while also influencing the development of policy and practice in the field of lifelong learning through evidence-based research. We value contributions from both established authors and emerging scholars.

In addition to the above areas, and other applications of the lifelong learning paradigm, we are particularly interested in receiving submissions on the following themes:

  • Education for sustainable development , particularly in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and educational responses and challenges to the climate crisis, including through indigenous knowledge systems and co-construction with local communities.
  • Citizenship education  and the role of education – particularly adult education – in fostering democratic values and supporting active civic and political awareness and engagement, locally, nationally and globally.
  • Education for migrants, refugees and internally displaced persons , with particular emphasis on their inclusion in crisis-sensitive education systems and the recognition of their formal and informal learning.
  • Explorations of the inter-sectoral scope of lifelong learning  and the links between education and other sectors, for example, health.

IRE is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal that accepts submissions in English and French. Manuscripts should be original and should not be under consideration by another journal or published elsewhere prior to submission.
