research questions on environmental science

Environmental science is a varied discipline that encompasses a variety of subjects, including ecology, atmospheric science, and geology among others. Professionals within this field can pursue many occupations from lab technicians and agricultural engineers to park rangers and environmental lawyers. However, what unites these careers is their focus on how the natural world and the human world interact and impact the surrounding environment. There is also one other significant commonality among environmental science careers: virtually all of them either engage in or rely on research on environmental science topics to ensure their work is accurate and up to date.

In this post, we’ll outline some of the best environmental science research topics to help you explore disciplines within environmental science and kickstart your own research. If you are considering majoring in environmental science or perhaps just need help brainstorming for a research paper, this post will give you a broad sense of timely environmental science research topics.

What makes a research topic good?

Before we dive into specific environmental science research topics, let’s first cover the basics: what qualities make for a viable research topic. Research is the process of collecting information to make discoveries and reach new conclusions. We often think of research as something that occurs in academic or scientific settings. However, everyone engages in informal research in everyday life, from reading product reviews to investigating statistics for admitted students at prospective colleges . While we all conduct research in our day-to-day lives, formal academic research is necessary to advance discoveries and scholarly discourses. Therefore, in this setting, good research hinges on a topic in which there are unanswered questions or ongoing debates. In other words, meaningful research focuses on topics where you can say something new.

However, identifying an interesting research topic is only the first step in the research process. Research topics tend to be broad in scope. Strong research is dependent on developing a specific research question, meaning the query your project will seek to answer. While there are no comprehensive guidelines for research questions, most scholars agree that research questions should be:

1) Specific

Research questions need to clearly identify and define the focus of your research. Without sufficient detail, your research will likely be too broad or imprecise in focus to yield meaningful insights. For example, you might initially be interested in addressing this question: How should governments address the effects of climate change? While that is a worthwhile question to investigate, it’s not clear enough to facilitate meaningful research. What level of government is this question referring to? And what specific effects of global warming will this research focus on? You would need to revise this question to provide a clearer focus for your research. A revised version of this question might look like this: How can state government officials in Florida best mitigate the effects of sea-level rise?

Our interest in a given topic often starts quite broad. However, it is difficult to produce meaningful, thorough research on a broad topic. For that reason, it is important that research questions be narrow in scope, focusing on a specific issue or subtopic. For example, one of the more timely environmental science topics is renewable energy. A student who is just learning about this topic might wish to write a research paper on the following question: Which form of renewable energy is best? However, that would be a difficult question to answer in one paper given the various ways in which an energy source could be “best.” Instead, this student might narrow their focus, assessing renewable energy sources through a more specific lens: Which form of renewable energy is best for job creation?

 3) Complex

As we previously discussed, good research leads to new discoveries. These lines of inquiry typically require a complicated and open-ended research question. A question that can be answered with just a “yes” or “no” (or a quick Google search) is likely indicative of a topic in which additional research is unnecessary (i.e. there is no ongoing debate) or a topic that is not well defined. For example, the following question would likely be too simple for academic research: What is environmental justice? You can look up a definition of environmental justice online. You would need to ask a more complex question to sustain a meaningful research project. Instead, you might conduct research on the following query: Which environmental issue(s) disproportionately impact impoverished communities in the Pacific Northwest? This question is narrower and more specific, while also requiring more complex thought and analysis to answer.

4) Debatable

Again, strong research provides new answers and information, which means that they must be situated within topics or discourses where there is ongoing debate. If a research question can only lead to one natural conclusion, that may indicate that it has already been sufficiently addressed in prior research or that the question is leading. For example, Are invasive species bad? is not a very debatable question (the answer is in the term “invasive species”!). A paper that focused on this question would essentially define and provide examples of invasive species (i.e. information that is already well documented). Instead, a researcher might investigate the effects of a specific invasive species. For example: How have Burmese pythons impacted ecosystems in the Everglades, and what mitigation strategies are most effective to reduce Burmese python populations?

Therefore, research topics, including environmental science topics, are those about which there are ample questions yet to be definitively answered. Taking time to develop a thoughtful research question will provide the necessary focus and structure to facilitate meaningful research.

10 Great Environmental Science Research Topics (With Explanations!)

Now that we have a basic understanding of what qualities can make or break a research topic, we can return to our focus on environmental science topics. Although “great” research topics are somewhat subjective, we believe the following topics provide excellent foundations for research due to ongoing debates in these areas, as well as the urgency of the challenges they seek to address.

1) Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation

Although climate change is now a well-known concept , there is still much to be learned about how humans can best mitigate and adapt to its effects. Mitigation involves reducing the severity of climate change. However, there are a variety of ways mitigation can occur, from switching to electric vehicles to enforcing carbon taxes on corporations that produce the highest carbon emission levels. Many of these environmental science topics intersect with issues of public policy and economics, making them very nuanced and versatile.

In comparison, climate change adaptation considers how humans can adjust to life in an evolving climate where issues such as food insecurity, floods, droughts, and other severe weather events are more frequent. Research on climate change adaptation is particularly fascinating due to the various levels at which it occurs, from federal down to local governments, to help communities anticipate and adjust to the effects of climate change.

Both climate change mitigation and adaptation represent excellent environmental science research topics as there is still much to be learned to address this issue and its varied effects.

2) Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is another fairly mainstream topic in which there is much to learn and research. Although scientists have identified many forms of sustainable energy, such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric power, questions remain about how to best implement these energy sources. How can politicians, world leaders, and communities advance renewable energy through public policy? What impact will renewable energy have on local and national economies? And how can we minimize the environmental impact of renewable energy technologies? While we have identified alternatives to fossil fuels, questions persist about the best way to utilize these technologies, making renewable energy one of the best environmental science topics to research.

3) Conservation

Conservation is a broad topic within environmental science, focusing on issues such as preserving environments and protecting endangered species. However, conservation efforts are more challenging than ever in the face of a growing world population and climate change. In fact, some scientists theorize that we are currently in the middle of a sixth mass extinction event. While these issues might seem dire, we need scientists to conduct research on conservation efforts for specific species, as well as entire ecosystems, to help combat these challenges and preserve the planet’s biodiversity.

4) Deforestation

The Save the Rainforest movement of the 1980s and 90s introduced many people to the issue of deforestation. Today, the problems associated with deforestation, such as reduced biodiversity and soil erosion, are fairly common knowledge. However, these challenges persist due, in part, to construction and agricultural development projects. While we know the effects of deforestation, it is more difficult to identify and implement feasible solutions. This is particularly true in developing countries where deforestation is often more prevalent due to political, environmental, and economic factors. Environmental science research can help reduce deforestation by identifying strategies to help countries sustainably manage their natural resources.

Environmental Science Topics (Continued)

5) urban ecology.

When we think of “the environment,” our brains often conjure up images of majestic mountain ranges and lush green forests. However, less “natural” environments also warrant study: this is where urban ecology comes in. Urban ecology is the study of how organisms interact with one another and their environment in urban settings. Through urban ecology, researchers can address topics such as how greenspaces in cities can reduce air pollution, or how local governments can adopt more effective waste management practices. As one of the newer environmental science topics, urban ecology represents an exciting research area that can help humans live more sustainably.

6) Environmental Justice

While environmental issues such as climate change impact people on a global scale, not all communities are affected equally. For example, wealthy nations tend to contribute more to greenhouse-gas emissions. However, less developed nations are disproportionately bearing the brunt of climate change . Studies within the field of environmental justice seek to understand how issues such as race, national origin, and income impact the degree to which people experience hardships from environmental issues. Researchers in this field not only document these inequities, but also identify ways in which environmental justice can be achieved. As a result, their work helps communities have access to clean, safe environments in which they can thrive.

7) Water Management

Water is, of course, necessary for life, which is why water management is so important within environmental science research topics. Water management research ensures that water resources are appropriately identified and maintained to meet demand. However, climate change has heightened the need for water management research, due to the occurrence of more severe droughts and wildfires. As a result, water management research is necessary to ensure water is clean and accessible.

8) Pollution and Bioremediation

Another impact of the increase in human population and development is heightened air, water, and soil pollution. Environmental scientists study pollutants to understand how they work and where they originate. Through their research, they can identify solutions to help address pollution, such as bioremediation, which is the use of microorganisms to consume and break down pollutants. Collectively, research on pollution and bioremediation helps us restore environments so they are sufficient for human, animal, and plant life.

9) Disease Ecology

While environmental science topics impact the health of humans, we don’t always think of this discipline as intersecting with medicine. But, believe it or not, they can sometimes overlap! Disease ecology examines how ecological processes and interactions impact disease evolution. For example, malaria is a disease that is highly dependent on ecological variables, such as temperature and precipitation. Both of these factors can help or hinder the breeding of mosquitoes and, therefore, the transmission of malaria. The risk of infectious diseases is likely to increase due to climate change , making disease ecology an important research topic.

10) Ecosystems Ecology

If nothing else, the aforementioned topics and their related debates showcase just how interconnected the world is. None of us live in a vacuum: our environment affects us just as we affect it. That makes ecosystems ecology, which examines how ecosystems operate and interact, an evergreen research topic within environmental science.

Habitats and Biodiversity

Amazon deforestation.

Sources: Planet Earth - Jungles [Video]                 Deforesting the Earth: From Prehistory to Global Crisis, Chapter 11.

Summary:  The Amazon is 5.7 million square kilometers and the largest continuous rainforest in the entire world.  Since 1970, 1/6 of the Amazon has been cleared, mainly for beef, and increasingly for ethanol production.  While techniques such as slash-and-burn provide a short-term boost in agricultural production, rainforest soil typically is very thin and does not support this type of agriculture over the long term.

The Black Rat - A Worldwide Invasive Species

Sources:   Rat Island: Predators in Paradise

Summary:  The Rattus Rattus, or black rat, is one of the first and most widespread invasive species. It is native to India, but it has spread to almost everywhere in the world. This rat has directly caused, or contributed to, the extinction of multiple wildlife species including a variety of birds, plants and other small mammals. They’re blamed for the incredible decline in seabirds on several islands, including many Pacific island species.  Additionally, the rats are indirectly the cause of the spread of the Bubonic plague throughout Europe during the Middle Ages.

Easter Island Deforestation

Sources: Collapse: How Societies Choose to Succeed or Fail, Chapter 2.

Summary:  Easter Island is most famous for the large moai , or statues with disproportionately large heads.  The presence of these statues seems to indicate a renaissance-like period for the native people. However, in 1722, a Dutch explorer made contact with the inhabitants of the island.  He described the island as barren, with virtually no trees and minimal agriculture.  The inhabitants seemed to be struggling to survive.  By the time Captain Cook arrived in 1774, many of the statues had been toppled and the population had dropped to 630.

Coral Reef Destruction

Sources: Blue Planet - Coral Seas [Video]                 A Reef in Time: The Great Barrier Reef from Beginning to End;                Chapters 2-4, 13-16.

Summary:  Of all the marine ecosystems, coral reefs have the greatest concentration of biodiversity. These rich and complex ecosystems are also among the most at risk.   The Great Barrier Reef in Australia has been predicted to be functionally extinct by 2050.  While some of this destruction is due to tourism and poaching, there are also links to global warming and its effects on the ocean – from temperature increases to change in water pH levels.

Ambitious research to study key environmental science questions

Asian woman staring at a screen with Earth displaying

13 September 2021

5 innovative new research projects could push the boundaries of science and help us understand key questions of environmental and earth science.

The ambitious studies, led by some of the UK’s leading scientists, are each tackling fundamental questions about the earth and our environment, including how we interact with our planet. The studies will:

  • establish whether the Earth’s core has multiple layers by building computer models to explain seismic and magnetic field data. The research could change our understanding of processes that generate our planet’s protective magnetic field
  • conduct the first comprehensive study of epigenetics, and whether environmental factors can cause changes in the way our genes are read, by following the lifecycles of a rare breed of sheep on the remote island of St Kilda in the Outer Hebrides
  • investigate whether deep sea hydrothermal vents sustained or even created the first life on earth. The research team will also investigate what that can tell us about the possibilities life in volcanically active planets including Mars
  • assess the limits of stability of marine ecosystems in a changing environment by studying the roles of 3 triggers of widespread mortality: viruses, microplastic pollution, and early life cycles
  • build our understanding of how single cell plant-like super marine organisms, called coccolithophores, use the sun’s energy to transform dissolved ions from the sea back into rocks.

Investing in science

The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) has invested a total of £8 million in the research as part of a unique pilot scheme to fund high risk and innovative science. This is the first time NERC has launched a scheme of this kind.

The Pushing the Frontiers scheme aims to facilitate truly adventurous and ambitious science and exploit new technologies and approaches. The projects will be funded for between 3 and 4 years.

Answering fundamental questions

Robyn Thomas, Associate Director of Research and Skills at NERC, said:

These highly innovative research projects could advance our understanding of fundamental questions in environmental and earth science, and lead to important scientific breakthroughs. The grants are the outcome of an exciting new pilot scheme to encourage and fund some of the UK’s most exceptional environmental scientists to lead more risky and transformational research.

Science Minister Amanda Solloway said:

If the UK is to lead the world in achieving scientific breakthroughs, it’s vital that we give our most pioneering scientists and researchers license to go where others haven’t before by driving forward high-risk, high-reward research. That’s why we are backing these 5 ambitious studies to the tune of £8 million, to help solve unanswered questions about our Universe,  from the origins of Earth to whether there is life on Mars, all while helping to secure the UK’s status as a global science superpower.

Project summaries

Did hydrothermal vents push the frontiers of habitability on the early earth, dr eva stueeken (university of st andrews).

This research project will study the fundamental question how early life was sustained. Several lines of evidence suggest that the nutrients supplied by deep sea hydrothermal vents could have cradled the earliest life on Earth.

To test this hypothesis, Dr Stueeken will develop a new hydrothermal reaction chamber that will allow her to recreate the pressures and temperatures in the vents and to introduce different:

  • gases (N2, CO2, CH4)
  • fluids (saline, fresh)
  • phosphate phases
  • catalytic minerals (magnetite, sulphides).

This could help to understand how volcanic activity on other planets might in theory sustain life, including on Mars and Europa, a moon orbiting Jupiter.

The role of epigenetics in evolution

Professor jon slate (the university of sheffield).

Professor Slate and his team will conduct the first full study on epigenetics, which is how environmental factors could play a part in changing our genes. Researchers will track the population of Soay sheep on the island of Hirta, St Kilda in the Outer Hebrides.

This population is one of the best studied mammal populations in the world. It has many features that make it ideal to explore the role of epigenetics on evolution. Complete life histories are known for around 10,000 sheep born since 1985. Environmental conditions on the island are challenging, meaning natural selection is strong enough for evolutionary change to have been witnessed and measured in the lifetime of the study.

The project will investigate commonest form of epigenetic effect is known as methylation.

Photosynthetic Underpinnings of Coccolithophore Calcification (PUCCA)

Professor rosalind emily mayors rickaby (university of oxford).

Single-cell organisms called coccolithophores generate over 1 billion tonnes of chalk (calcium carbonate) every year in the ocean. These ocean bugs provide a foundation of the marine ecosystem and are major players in the ocean carbon cycle.

The generation of chalk in the surface ocean affects how much CO2 can be extracted into those surface waters from the atmosphere. And the production of the dense chalk mineral by these carbon-fixing cells, helps them sink to depth and take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to the deep ocean where it is stored.

This is a fundamental part of the modern carbon cycle but we do not know what limits how much chalk can be produced and therefore how this component will affect the amount of carbon dioxide that the ocean can absorb in the future. By working with interdisciplinary teams and using pioneering techniques, Professor Rickaby will:

  • compare the physiology recorded in coccolithophore fossils with current cultured cells to establish how they have adapted to changes in the environment over the centuries to millions of years
  • explore the links between photosynthesis and calcification as evidenced from modern and past biomolecules, adaptation in genes and the isotopic compositions of the fossils.

Frontiers of instability in marine ecosystems and carbon export (Marine Frontiers)

Professor corinne le quéré (university of east anglia).

This research project aims to establish the limits of stability of the Earth’s marine ecosystems, using modelling on a scale not undertaken before. Marine microorganisms live on the ocean surface and once they die or are eaten, organic matter sinks to the bottom of the sea. This is a vital process in regulating our climate.

Understanding the causes of mortality of microorganisms, and the roles of viruses, microplastics and early life cycles, is therefore critical. Organisms’ lifespans are very short and so changes in mortality can substantially impact marine ecosystems. Yet mortality processes have received little attention so far.

Using data from new technology, including imaging of ocean plankton, Professor Le Quéré will develop and use a global ecosystem model to better understand how marine ecosystems are impacted by multiple stressors, including:

  • climate change
  • ocean acidification
  • microplastic pollution
  • pressure from fisheries.

This will test the limits of their stability under extreme conditions.

Earth’s core as a layered system

Dr christopher davies (university of leeds).

Establishing the origin of Earth’s magnetic field is crucial for understanding planetary habitability and evolution and is widely recognised as a fundamental goal in Earth science. The field has shielded the surface environment from solar radiation for billions of years and now helps mitigate against space weather events, which can significantly impact telecommunications and power grids.

Yet the field is generated in the iron core, an ocean of liquid metal 2800 km below the surface, and so the changes we experience at Earth’s surface reflect dynamics in the most remote region of our planet.

The standard model of Earth’s core cannot explain crucial observations from seismology and geomagnetism and therefore lacks essential physics. Dr Davies believes that the observations can be explained by viewing the Earth’s core as a system of coupled layers, each with their own unique dynamics.

To test this hypothesis, he will develop a new model of the core that requires major enhancements to existing computer codes and solutions of new and complex systems of equations.

About the pushing the frontiers pilot scheme.

The pushing the frontiers pilot aims to support our very best individual researchers to push the frontiers of knowledge with ground-breaking, risky, and innovative scientific discovery. The proposals are funded at up to £2 million per award over a period of 3 to 4 years, a timescale and funding award that can enable the ambitious and innovative research we seek.

The application process involved a streamlined process, with focus on the proposed transformational research (5 pages), and the skills and track record of the individual (2 pages).

As part of the streamlined application process, the assessment would focus on the individual applicant and their high-risk, high-reward scientific vision. Joint applications with other researchers were not permitted, although funds may be used flexibly to resource eligible collaborators.

In recognising the principal investigator may lead a team, the applicant had to demonstrate in their track record their capability to advance the careers of others.

This scheme structure encouraged applications from early career researchers (ECR) and within an institution’s demand management allocation, research organisations could submit up to 2 applications to this scheme, provided 1 application was from an ECR. There were separate, initial assessment panels for ECRs and established principal investigators, but a final panel considered jointly the best candidates from each.

research questions on environmental science

Big Questions in the Environmental Social Sciences

The Environmental Social Sciences Network was established as a resource for researchers to connect, share ideas and research through blogs, podcasts and social media, and generally support advances in the theory and practice of the environmental social sciences.  Interestingly many of the early discussions and posts have centered on basic definitional questions about the nature of the environmental social sciences that distinguish it from other fields of inquiry, its unique contributions to theory and practice, and the questions that might define its future.  As part of this project we recruited environmental social scientists through Twitter to respond to a 1 question survey which asked:

What do you feel is the most important question that needs to be addressed by the next generation of Environmental Social Science (ESS) scholarship?

The answers have unsurprisingly varied widely among the 22 respondents to the survey which I have loosely grouped into 5 categories.  These include questions about how the environmental social sciences may establish itself within different disciplines and organizations, the tools and approaches that are used to organize and undertake research in the environmental social sciences, questions about how we frame our research and the implications this has for theory and practice, understanding the conditions and processes by which communities and society transform or change their relationship with their environment and lastly advancing our understanding of the political processes that underlie environmental governance.  These questions further elaborated by each respondent below may represent an important starting point for early career scholars they seek to develop and undertake research in the environmental social sciences.  Similarly I hope that members of the broader environmental social science community find these questions useful, but also that they help to better understand how their own work fits within the broader landscape of the environmental social sciences.  It is critically important that we as a community continue to advance and support research in each of these areas to advance knowledge and enhance prospects for environmental sustainability.  Lastly I encourage you to join this experiment, the environmental social sciences network and share your own perspectives about where we are and where we need to go in the environmental social sciences.

Recognition of the Field

“I think the most important question facing the next generation of Environmental Social Science scholarship is how can the environmental social sciences increase their power? Although there are notable exceptions, environmental social sciences are marginalized within many social science disciplines, where the environment is seen as a marginal and relatively unimportant subfield relative to those fields that address central disciplinary questions. They are marginalized within many environmental programs which emphasize ecology and other biophysical sciences as essential to understanding environmental problems while failing to teach how humans create and solve the biophysical problems. They are marginalized within many fields of employment related to the environment, where biophysical science skills are required for entry-level employment and advancement, and jobs that are fundamentally about dealing with people are instead occupied by people who were trained as biophysical scientists.” Forrest Fleischman, University of Minnesota   “A key issue facing environmental social science is its legitimacy as a distinct field within the broader social sciences. Addressing this issue will require, in part, a clearer articulation of the scope of this emerging field – it’s underpinning mission and principles (is it a normative branch of science?), the research methods and approaches that constitute scholarship that can be categorised as ESS etc” Georgina Gurney, ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, James Cook University

Theory, Methods and Frameworks

“An important question comes back to the long-existing debate about specificity vs generalizability: (How) Can we make findings from ESS generalizable? How much context-specific information do we need to account for?” Natalie Ban, University of Victoria
“Developing a concise theoretical framework that is capable of explaining both institutional diversity and fit, the evolution of polycentric governance institutions over space and time and identifies the core social processes driving the effective governance of social-ecological systems.” Mark Lubell, UC Davis   “I believe online surveys will increasingly dominate social data collection – spurred on by current social distancing recommendations. Thus developing and maintaining rigorous standards for online surveys must be addressed by ESS scholars.” Chloe Wardropper, University of Idaho
“Most research in the future will be influenced at one level or another by the Great Acceleration/the Anthropocene (and associated impacts of climate change, etc).  Understanding these complex SES will be the core of our work.  On a day-to-day level, I think that it is important for researchers to balance a rigorous scientific approach with a transdisciplinary and applied focus.” Michael Schoon, School of Sustainability, Arizona State University

Problem Framing

“How might conservation meaningfully address colonialism, racism, ablism, and heteronormativity in its own movement and history, towards truly supporting conservation interests beyond their current scope?” Adam Linnard, Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative
“How do we achieve sustainable and equitable outcomes in human-nature relationships? Three main components: Enhancing our understanding about the compound risks posed by global environmental change, particularly how to develop regional social-ecological resilience against them. Sharing planning and management responsibility and accountability with stakeholders, through participatory processes that integrate learning into policy and decision making. This means leaving behind the current blame culture, and embracing a learning and formative one. To develop a fit between institutions (rules of the game) and nature that is flexible enough to incorporate learning and adapt to uncertainty and unpredictability.” Pablo F. Mendez, INGENIO (CSIC-Universitat Politècnica de València)
“How can we better understand the problem of, and solutions to, nested sets of multi-level collective action problems? (e.g., climate change, pollution, deforestation).” Stefan Partelow, ZMT, Bremen, Germany

Transitions, transformations and change

“From my perspective, the most important questions for the next generation of EES scholars is: what social, institutional, political and psychological processes enable transformational change towards more equitable and sustainable futures?” Jessica Blythe, Environmental Sustainability Research Centre, Brock University
“How can we transition to a post-carbon future?” Michael Cox, Dartmouth College
“What are the pathways and barriers to transformations to sustainability?” Gustavo Garcia-Lopez, Center for Social Studies, University of Coimbra
“How to we catalyze and maintain fundamental shifts in human behavior so we live in a just and green world?” Kirsten L Oleson, University of Hawaii “How can we effectively implement polycentric governance across multiple countries, regions and cities, and how can we improve collaborative governance processes in contexts with limited rule of law?” Raul Pacheco-Vega Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE)   “Inequality, in incomes and opportunities.” Bejoy Thomas IISER Pune, India
“Maybe the collective definition of a new relationship with the environment, i.e., one that is not anchored in idealized understandings of nature but that is the result of a socially conscious contract that recognizes different ways of dealing with it. ESS grew out of a concern about environmental degradation. Maybe it is time for ESS to emancipate from it.” Sergio Villamayor-Tomas, Senior researcher at ICTA, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona
“Temporal scale mismatches and trade-offs in natural resources governance (socio-economic and political trade-off specifically)” Jacopo Baggio, University of Central Florida

“How to reduce the human ecological footprint on the planet – which likely entails slowly reducing the size of the human population – in a just, humane, transparent and agreeable way without messing things”

Örjan Bodin, Stockholm University
“How do we move ESS research results rapidly to actual changes on the ground? I am aware this is going beyond the conventional conceptualization of what science should be or do. However, without affecting actual change, a lot of our science loses its purpose. Though changes in the management of our environment are occurring, they are not pervasive enough; they are too slow and narrow to avoid further degradation and loss of environmental systems. Of course, most people (i.e., policy-makers and general public) say the environment is important; and some of them actively try improving the situation. However, most people seem stuck in inertia. How do we move these people to sustained action?” Michael Drescher, University of Waterloo
“How can we achieve political consensus for deep decarbonization?” Paasha Mahdavi, University of California Santa Barbara
“How can we best evaluate “political will”?” Chanda Meek, University of Alaska Fairbanks

Research suggests natural electrical grid deep inside Earth enables many types of microbes to survive

by Yale University

Deep Earth electrical grid mystery solved

To "breathe" in an environment without oxygen, bacteria in the ground beneath our feet depend upon a single family of proteins to transfer excess electrons (produced during the "burning" of nutrients) to electric hairs called nanowires projecting from their surface.

This family of proteins, in essence, acts as plugs that power these nanowires to create a natural electrical grid deep inside the Earth, which enables many types of microbes to survive and support life, said co-senior authors of the new study published in the journal Nature Communications

The researchers included Nikhil Malvankar, associate professor of Yale's Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry Department and Microbial Sciences Institute, and Carlos Salgueiro, full Professor at NOVA School of Science and Technology in Lisbon (NOVA-FCT).

Malvankar's lab and Salgueiro's lab have extensively studied the components of this microbial electrical grid. However, it was unclear how bacteria can transmit excess electrons produced by metabolic activity into nanowires projecting from their surface and connecting with minerals or neighbors. The researcher found that many kinds of soil bacteria depend upon a single, widespread family of cytochromes inside their bodies to charge nanowires .

Understanding the details of this nanowire charging is important for the potential development of new energy sources and new biomaterials and their impact on the environment.

Malvankar and Salgueiro note that microbes absorb 80% of methane in the ocean, a major contributor to global warming , emitted from ocean floors. However, microbes on Earth's surface account for 50% of methane emissions into the atmosphere. Understanding different metabolic processes might help mitigate methane emissions, they said.

Alaska Native tribes take lead on shellfish toxin testing where state falls short

Alaska lacks a state-run toxin testing program for noncommercial harvests, so tribes successfully took shellfish safety into their own hands. but shortages of funds and staff put limits on the monitoring, threatening this traditional harvest.

A group of coastal Alaska Native tribes in 2016 began monitoring shellfish, a traditional harvest, for deadly biotoxins because the state only tests commercial harvests. The program fills an essential gap in public health protection and has found success, with 17 tribes now in the testing network. Securing stable, long-term funding and improving public outreach could improve outcomes even further, a new study reports.

Toxins from some types of algae blooms can accumulate in shellfish and, when consumed, cause paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP). Even small quantities of the toxin can lead to death. Alaska tests commercially sold shellfish, and the state's Division of Environmental Health advises against eating shellfish harvested from beaches that have not been recently tested.

But because local community shellfish harvests are not for commercial sale, the shellfish can't be tested with the state. Coastal indigenous communities are at high risk of poisoning because many depend on traditional wild-harvested shellfish. Between 1993 and 2021, Alaska Natives suffered 53% of recorded PSP cases despite only making up 16% of Alaska's population.

In 2014, Alaska Native tribes founded the Southeast Alaska Tribal Ocean Research network (SEATOR), with early testing beginning in 2016. SEATOR's tribal partners regularly collect shellfish samples, encourage community members to collect and send in their own shellfish for testing, and share toxin data with communities to inform harvesting decisions. Seventeen tribal communities are now involved, increasing participation and risk awareness.

Even with this success, funding and community perceptions around risks limit how widespread and effective the toxin testing program can be, the study reports.

"Shellfish harvesting is central to coastal Alaska Native culture," said Hugh Roland, an environmental sociologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham who led the study. "Filling this gap between commercial shellfish testing and community needs is critical, especially for rural communities that rely more heavily on shellfish. And to do that, we really need to understand how the testing network has been effective, as well as what has constrained testing efforts and capacities. Then we can address those barriers, and communities can continue their traditions safely."

The study was published in GeoHealth , which publishes research investigating the intersection of human and planetary health for a sustainable future.

In testing we trust?

To understand the barriers to the program's reach and effectiveness across Alaska and how it is perceived by communities, Roland and his collaborators interviewed 27 SEATOR staff who help manage testing, and they also interviewed other individuals with shellfish toxin expertise. They discussed several broad themes: community perceptions of toxin testing and the risks of shellfish harvesting; the status of toxin testing in those communities; and barriers to or facilitators of the actual toxin testing process.

Overall, the researchers found that communities with active toxin testing were very aware of shellfish poisoning, but reactions varied widely. Some people were less concerned, relying on personal experience with the safety of the traditional shellfish harvest. Others took the risk of PSP so seriously that they stopped harvesting shellfish altogether.

"It's about bringing both sides to the middle," said Jacob Kohlhoff, the environmental education coordinator for the Sitka Tribe. "We want to show that harvesting is good. We don't want to stop it. But we have to do it safely."

But successful risk communication relies on consistent, timely testing, which can be a problem. The program struggled with delays particularly during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the testing facility closed between October 2021 and February 2023 and delays in testing until July 2023.

That halt in testing just a few years into the program damaged trust with communities, interviewees said. People don't want to keep shellfish in the freezer indefinitely while they're waiting for test results, especially if they're relying on it for food during lean winter months.

"Full-scale testing had just begun in late 2018 and was relatively new, so trust eroded pretty quickly," Kohlhoff said. It has been difficult to get people to buy back into the program when it seems like testing could stop again at any time, he said.

Climate change is further complicating risk communication, Roland said. As coastal waters warm and their nutrient fluxes change, harmful algae blooms -- the source of shellfish toxins -- are becoming more frequent and widespread, and they are occurring over a longer season. Historically, winter was a safe time to harvest, but "things are changing," one participant said. "We find paralytic shellfish toxins in our shellfish pretty much year-round at this point."

Room for improvement

The researchers found major barriers related to the communities' remoteness, which makes it more difficult to work and attract workers, and low and unreliable funding from grants.

The first issue is geographic: Many Southeast Alaska Native communities are deeply isolated and difficult to get to. There, the cost of living is high, and housing is limited and expensive. Those factors make carrying out sampling difficult, and it can be a tough sell for would-be staff members.

The second hurdle is financial. The toxin testing is funded by a series of grants, each supporting novel work and each lasting only a few years. However, more rural communities with fewer resources are less able to apply for these grants. The need to apply for new funding every few years also contributes to high staff turnover. SEATOR enables communities to better pool resources and apply for grants together, but applying still takes staff time and resources.

Despite these barriers, the toxin testing program has enabled small or remote tribes to take the safety of traditional harvests into their own hands when the state falls short. The network's success could serve as a model for other community-led environmental health efforts elsewhere, Roland said.
