High School Fashion Show Ideas

Ideas For Wacky Tacky Day

Ideas For Wacky Tacky Day

Holding high school fashion shows has become a common trend nowadays. Teens are often particularly self-conscious, and knowing about popular fashion choices can give young people more confidence about their choices regarding their appearance. A fashion show is relatively easy to set up. With the help of local businesses, you can convert a normal high school fashion show into a fundraising event.

Charity Fashion Show

Having a fashion show is good way for kids in high school to raise money. Whatever the reason for holding the fundraiser, a fashion show is an easy way to attract other students as well as a number of parents. One idea is to have a benefit dinner with the fashion show. The school can increase the cost of attendance. Another idea is to auction off the clothes the models wear. You can ask local boutiques and shops to sponsor your fashion show. Although not necessary, you may create a theme for your fashion show that corresponds to the fundraising cause. For instance, if you are raising money for environmental protection projects, why not feature clothes made with biodegradable or recycled material?

Start-of-School Fashion Show

High school students often stress about what to wear to school. This concern heightens during the first few weeks of classes when students are particularly concerned about making good impressions. That is why a start-of-school fashion show can be a popular event among students, allowing them to model everyday wear to help other kids with their wardrobe choices. The clothes do not have to be overly intricate or expensive. The committee can select casual wear clothing that, chances are, are already in most students’ closets. This kind of fashion show isn’t just for girls, either. Male student models can be a big help for those guys who do not know what to wear to impress their crushes. Students may also model gym clothes, formal wear for special dances like homecoming, and other clothing students wear in the school year.

Before-the-Prom Fashion Show

The one event to which high school girls look forward more than any other is prom. However, many of them are clueless as to what to wear weeks before the event. A before-the-prom fashion show will help everyone know what is fashionably in for the season. Ask a local stylist to organize the fashion show, since an expert can suggest different types of prom dresses. The stylist can come up with not just modern prom gowns, but also vintage formal wear and dresses that are Goth-inspired. This will help ensure that each girl can find a dress or two that matches her personality in the fashion show.

10 Fashion Passion Project Ideas for High School Students

presentation high school fashion show

By Alex Yang

Graduate student at Southern Methodist University

6 minute read

Fashion plays a pivotal role in society, beyond just the realm of clothing for everyday use. It serves as a form of self-expression, allowing individuals to convey their identity, creativity, and cultural affiliations. Beyond personal style, fashion can be a powerful tool for social and cultural commentary, reflecting the values, trends, and movements of society at any given time. Moreover, the global fashion industry is a major economic force, influencing production and consumption patterns worldwide.

For many teens, it may be difficult to study fashion in a traditional school setting due to lack of opportunities. Many high schools do not offer fashion classes and there may be limited resources to explore the field. As a result, pursuing a fashion passion project as a high schooler can be a great way to take initiative and gain exposure to the topic on your own.

Finding Your Fashion Passion Project Focus

For fashion passion projects specifically, you have the unique opportunity to create a physical, hands-on product. For example, Lydia’s project was to recreate a historical dress shown in an old painting , using similar materials and sewing techniques from that time period. This kind of project involves extensive research and prior knowledge of sewing, which can make it a bit challenging. But if you have the technical skills to create an original piece of clothing, this could definitely be a great type of project to pursue.

If you’re less interested in hands-on work, there’s always the option of researching a topic within fashion and finding your own unique perspective on it. Within fashion, there are many subtopics, like fashion ethics, sustainable fashion, luxury fashion vs. budget fashion, etc. The best way to find a project focus is just to think about what interests you the most! What kinds of fashion do you gravitate towards?

10 Fashion Passion Project and Research Ideas

1. upcycled product prototype .

This project would explore sustainable manufacturing and production methods as it applies to fashion, accessories, or home goods. To start, you’ll research different ideas of recycling and up-cycling as strategies for making sustainable products. Then, look at all the components of product design and development–materials, supply chain, production, and construction–through these sustainable lenses. To take it a step further, you could formulate a method for making a new, scalable and sustainably made object/product.

2. The intersection of fashion and history

We may think we know the styles of the 1970s or of the 1920s, but do we really? Can we note the difference between the 1970s in London or New York City versus a small town in Illinois; or between different social groups or subcultures? Costume designers and fashion historians must meticulously research and distill to know exactly when a photograph was taken or to confirm the origin of a garment. In this project, you can begin to learn these same techniques by observing things like quality and style of clothing, fabric, fit, socio-economic influences, as well as political and war-time changes. The changing fashion of hairstyles and makeup could be evaluated too. Further, learn about how to accurately decipher and document status in dress. Whether it’s the difference between a Civil War Brigadier General and a member of the Company or an 1850s woman of privilege versus her maid, there are many exciting nuances and vast distinctions to explore in status.

3. Fashion brand concept

Develop a concept for your own fashion brand, including branding, logo design, and a business plan. Think through critical aspects of your brand, like what clothing types you’ll sell, your target demographic, your pricing and marketing, and how you’ll manage your online presence vs. brick and mortar. You can even take it a step further by designing a prototype fashion collection for your brand .

4. Fashion photography

Explore fashion photography by styling and photographing your own fashion shoots. Learn about lighting, composition, and editing to create stunning fashion images. Here’s a primer on fashion photography to get you started.

5. Clothing swap event

Organize a clothing swap event at your school or in your community, where people bring gently used clothing to exchange with others. This allows you to form a community of people who are interested in fashion and also gives you valuable experience in event planning . You’ll not only have to first plan where and when you’ll host the event, but you’ll also find creative ways to market the event and make sure that people know about it. Be sure to document your process for planning the event and highlights from the event itself!

6. DIY fashion blog/vlog

Start a written blog or YouTube channel where you document your personal fashion journey. You can explore content ideas like tutorials on how to create unique clothing items, style tips, and fashion inspiration. This project will help strengthen your understanding of fashion and also allow you to learn from others as you begin to build a following. You can also gain key business experience in learning how to serve and engage an audience and get traction on a content platform.

7. Sustainable fabric exploration

Research and experiment with sustainable fabric options, such as organic cotton, hemp, or Tencel. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? How do these materials compare to what’s commonly used in the industry today? Discuss how practical it would be for a reputable fashion brand to switch to more sustainable fabric options, and how that could potentially benefit the brand.

8. Fashion and wearable tech

Explore the intersection of fashion and technology by analyzing the market for wearable tech accessories. How do these accessories balance function with aesthetic? What makes them visually appealing or unappealing?

9. Virtual styling consultations

If you’re feeling up for an entrepreneurial challenge and you’re confident in your fashion sense, offer virtual styling consultations to friends and classmates. Help them put together outfits and share your expertise with them. After doing your first several consultations, think about how to grow your business and reach new customers.

10. Community fashion show

Organize a fashion show featuring clothing and accessories created by local designers, which can include yourself and your peers. This can also be turned into a fundraiser for a charitable cause!

How to Showcase Your Fashion Passion Project

Showcasing your fashion passion project after you’ve completed your research is a very important step of the process. Showcasing is how you let your project shine and allows you to share your success with a larger audience . There are many possible ways that you can showcase your work .

For the projects that are more research and history oriented, you can explore showcasing options like publishing a paper in a journal or creating a presentation. For projects where you’re creating a piece of work like photos or clothing, you may want to consider options like creating a website or digital portfolio where your finished work can live. Finally, for projects where you’re organizing an event, don’t assume that the event itself is sufficient for showcasing your work. Make sure you find ways to document the process it took to make the event happen, whether that’s through vlogging, journaling, or taking photos at key milestones. This will really help bring your event’s story to life!

Examples of Fashion Passion Projects Completed by Polygence Students

In addition to Lydia’s project mentioned above, other Polygence students have completed passion projects related to fashion. We’ll highlight two of their fashion research projects here:

Sianna created a fashion magazine that showcased 10 unique dresses for different social occasions. For each dress, Sianna created a sketch of the dress and pictures of the fabrics that you could use to make it.

Alexia took a more historical approach and investigated fashion styles from the 1850s-1890s . Alexia learned to create technical drawings of the garments and also conducted research into the materials that would’ve been used for the garments. In the end, Alexia designed a set of costumes based on her research in 19th century fashion.

Design YOUR Fashion Passion Project

In this article, we covered how to find your fashion passion project focus, shared ideas for fashion passion projects, and discussed how to showcase your unique project.

How to Organize a Student Fashion Show

By Sierra Tishgart

Producing a student fashion show provides hands-on experience in styling, event planning, and fundraising. It is certainly a big undertaking, but if you're in a community that has limited fashion opportunities, it is an ideal way to acquire the skills you need to pursue a career in the industry. Staging a fashion show is also a great way to fundraise for charity, and a student production has the potential to raise awareness and mobilize a community of young people to give back. Chloe Dawes and Alex Mortara of The London School of Economics' Fashion Society , Patricia Foody of Fordham University's Fashion for Philanthropy club, and Emerly Soong of Northwestern University's Unity Charity Fashion Show share their top tips.

It takes commitment and coordination to stage a successful fashion show. Students share their advice on setting a budget, booking a venue, and selecting models and designers.

What are the first steps to take in organizing a student fashion show?

Chloe of LSE : "We start organizing five months before our show. More than a sequential logic, organizing the show is a series of steps that need to be taken in parallel. It is important to start looking for designers straight away while developing a concept board, finding a theme for the show, organizing casting, and booking a location. Putting together a strong team to carry out these tasks is definitely the first step."

Patricia of Fordham : "The first step is to choose a theme for the show. This determines the styles of clothing that you hope to have on the runway, as well as other aspects of the show such as the decorations. This year the theme of our show is 'A Twisted Tea Party.' In the beginning of the year, we also decide on our fundraising goal."

Emerly of Northwestern : "Find a group of people who come from different backgrounds and can bring different skills and ideas to the table. Also, have a reason to produce the fashion show beyond loving fashion itself. If a student group is passionate about a certain cause, then focus on raising money for philanthropy in conjunction with producing a great fashion show."

What are the production costs? How do you raise funds?

Alex of LSE : "As this is a student organized charity fashion show, we aim to use a limited budget. We look for designers who are willing to showcase their collections for free in order to avoid costs, and we are also able to secure hair and make up artists free of charge in exchange for photos for their portfolios. Overall, we spent around 300 pounds (close to $500) on our 2012 show. To cover these costs, we had each member of the LSE Fashion Society make a 2-pound ($3) donation, and used a small part of the revenue from ticket sales. The proceeds from the show totalled to around 600 pounds ($950) for our chosen charity, Afghanaid ."

Patricia of Fordham : "We need about $6,000 to produce a show. This covers audio equipment, staging, a backdrop and rental chairs. The club is very fortunate to be able to appeal each year to Fordham for funds, and during the school year we raise additional money through fundraisers. We have many bake sales on campus and also sell candy grahams during the holidays. Last year’s show raised $7,500 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation ."

Emerly of Northwestern : "We petition to Northwestern for a specific budget, and then we raise philanthropy proceeds through ticket sales and fundraising events. Last year, we raised $2,700."

How do you reach out to designers and select clothing for the show?

Alex of LSE : "We have a wardrobe coordination team that sets out to find designers willing to showcase their designs. We find designers by searching online and directly contacting them. We are very keen on helping young up-and-coming designers promote their lines."

Patricia of Fordham : "We receive all of the clothing for the show by reaching out to both designers and stores for donations."

Emerly of Northwestern : "It is a five-month planning process to contact mainstream fashion brands, local boutiques, student designers, and cultural organizations on campus for clothing. The first phase of the process entails committee members traveling to stores and presenting the fashion show event to store managers. Members ask for business cards and then follow up with managers via email one week later. From there, it's all about continuing a strong conversation so that we get official sponsorship confirmation from the brand or designer."

How do you select and book a venue?

Chloe of LSE : "We host the show in a big lecture theatre on campus that accommodates a larger audience of around 200 people. We use neighbouring classrooms as backstage space."

Patricia of Fordham : "The show is held in Fordham University's gym each year. Last year, approximately 500 people attended the show."

Emerly of Northwestern : "We host the show in an auditorium at Northwestern. It's a free venue for student organizations, so it's the most economic choice we have given our budget constraints. 315 people attended the show last year."

How do you cast models?

Chloe of LSE : "We hold auditions on campus and promote them on Facebook, Twitter, and posters. We encourage all students to come and audition; height and size are not factors in our judgement. We wanted to include as many different students as possible."

Patricia of Fordham : "The models are all Fordham student, and we hold open casting calls. We use about 30 models."

Emerly of Northwestern : ""We host model calls, and choose people who have a sturdy, confident walk and bring a lot of energy. It is about personality and spunk rather than dress size or weight. Models have training sessions every week up until the show."

What do you do to generate press and sell tickets?

Alex of LSE : "Our marketing team makes posters, designs tickets, and creates a press pack. We put together an invite and send it out to contacts from different fashion magazines and blogs."

Patricia of Fordham : "We have a blog where student writers highlight their peer’s fashion and the sponsors of the show. We also contact local newspapers, magazines and television stations in hopes that the media would pick up on the club’s story."

Emerly of Northwestern : "We design flyers that we distribute throughout campus, and we also push our marketing efforts through social media."

What are the main challenges in organizing a student fashion show?

Alex of LSE : "Gaining everyone's cooperation and commitment is difficult at the start. As an organizer, the show takes precedence in my everyday life, but for the models, it's an extracurricular activity. Organizing the show is a balancing act. Everything to do with the show goes through me, so it is important to restrain from fully taking over. As a leader of a group, you also have to accept that you cannot do everything yourself. Delegating tasks, sharing responsibilities, and accepting the ideas of others over your own is important."

Patricia of Fordham : "I would definitely say time management. All of the club members are still, first and foremost, students. Everyone has full schedules. Putting on a student organized fashion show is truly a group effort that would not be possible if we did not work together."

Emerly of Northwestern : "One of the biggest challenges is to convince well-known clothing brands to sponsor our show. Large brands need to go through a hierarchy of ecutive approval from corporate headquarters in order to officially sponsor the show. This always takes a long time, and many stores have a policy not to participate in student fashion shows for fear of brand value diffusion."

What advice do you have for students who want to organize a college fashion show?

Chloe of LSE : "It's important to communicate well. Keeping your team up to date with what is going on and involving them in the process is key to maintaining high participation and commitment as well as avoiding misunderstandings. Also, bear in mind your responsibility and set an example so that others will trust and follow you."

Patricia of Fordham : "The show does not need to be a huge production; there is nothing wrong with starting off small. In the past, we've had smaller shows where only one student designer was showcased. Tapping into any resources available to you is also key; try a local boutique or designer who may be willing to lend out clothes for your show. Get in contact with university staff at your school; professors and student resource centers are both great options to help steer you in the right direction."

Emerly of Northwestern : "Always be organized, but also keep in mind that flexibility is key. No matter how meticulously students plan for the big day of the show, there usually will be a few unexpected obstacles that will require leaders to think on their feet in order to resolve issues quickly."

Kent, OH – The nationally and internationally ranked Kent State University School of Fashion is thrilled to announce their acclaimed Annual Fashion Show will take place April 25-27, 2024 in the Kent Student Center Ballroom on the Kent Campus.

The 2024 Annual Fashion Show features 163 looks from 42 designers whose collections and single-submission garments were chosen by a panel of industry critics and jurors for inclusion in this year’s show. The collections and garments span all categories of fashion and include evening wear, market ready, universal design and more.

The Annual Fashion Show “is a great opportunity for our community to celebrate and witness first-hand the achievements of our fashion design and merchandising students,” says School of Fashion director Dr. Mourad Krifa . “Their extraordinary talent and creativity, along with the dedication of the faculty who nurture them, is what makes us one of the top fashion schools in the world.”

The annual Fashion Show, led by senior co-producers Daniella Byrnes and Mackenzie Karsten, is the largest event undertaken by the School of Fashion each year. Faculty members Joanne Arnett and Sue Yoder are faculty co-directors of the show. The production includes participation by School of Fashion students who serve on committees in design, merchandising, modeling, public relations and stage.

Starting with the collection review process in the fall semester, the designers in residence work alongside students to refine their garments and collections. The School of Fashion 2023-2024 designers in residence are Marla Cotten and Geoffrey Henning. Industry critics are also brought in to view and critique the students’ work. The 2024 B.F.A. critic is Alicia Hardesty.

The collections and single-submission garments included in the Fashion Show are eligible to win the following awards: Best in Show Award, Circular Economy Award, Construction Technique Award, Fashion Show Management Award, Innovation Award, Knitwear Award, Market Ready Award, Niche Market Award, Special Occasions Award, Student’s Choice Award, Sustainable Design Award, TechStyleLAB Award, and Universal Design Award.

The Opening Night Fashion Show on Thurs., April 25 begins at 7 p.m. and is open to Kent State University students on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Awards Night Fashion Show on Fri., April 26 begins at 7 p.m., is open to the public and will be followed by the annual awards ceremony and a dessert reception.
