Students are always looking for ways to save money. Some turn to part-time jobs while others resort to reducing their expenditure. This is a sample essay on how to save money that could inspire you to write a masterpiece on this issue.

The life of a college student is not as rosy as most people imagine it to be. Well, there are amazing parties and all sorts of fun things to do when in college, but that’s just it. Students have societal expectations to deal with. They have assignments and projects to deliver and exams to ace. This is no easy task since some of the courses in college are tough and ever-absent professors don’t make things easier as well. There is also the issue of student finances to deal with. Without a steady income, college students are forced to rely on student loans and funds from their parents to see out a semester. These funds, however, are not always enough and students are forced to turn to unorthodox means to make sure they have enough for their education. Students are forced to reduce their spending on certain items, and this usually comes with harsh consequences.

In an attempt to save more, students would resort to cheap meals or even skip some of them altogether. These cheap meals are usually very unhealthy, and the students miss out on the vital nutrients that are needed for healthy growth and development. Some of the cheap meals that students turn to in an attempt to save money include fast foods such as French fries and burgers. These meals are unhealthy, and their regular consumption has a bad impact on people’s health.

Cutting out on entertainment is another ‘luxury’ that students do away with to save money. Movies and music concerts cost money and students avoid them so as to save as much as they can. Some even avoid going out with their friends and spend most of their time in their rooms. Entertainment, however, is very important for the emotional development of a human being, and students are advised to take time for entertainment. A lack of entertainment among college students may cause depression and other emotional issues since all that the students will be thinking about is books and their academic assignments.

Students also turn to free software and applications so as to save money. These non-premium versions, however, come with a lot of bugs and students are at risk of virus attacks to the minimum.

Some would even terminate their gym membership to save money. Most colleges have gyms on campus, but they are usually in a poor state and that is why students visit gyms that are off campus. When times get tough, most students would terminate their membership so as to save as much as they can. Without working out, students get unhealthy, and this brings a lot of challenges.

Tough times call for tough measures. Students resort to the above-mentioned activities to save money, but these methods have some harsh consequences attached to them.

It might seem painstaking, but this process will help you to note how payments and purchases affect your balance, and savings ultimately.

Another important factor in saving money is creating a budget. This is usually done after reviewing all your transactions and what you need to use your money for in order to survive. As stated by America Saves, “Create a budget that you can stick to. Look at places you can cut back in order to pay down high-interest debt and save. Each week, check your finances to make sure you are staying within your budget” (Bryan, Katie). The most essential factor in creating a budget is knowing you can keep to it through the bumps on the road of your finances.

As an extension of your budget, you can create a plan for your spending. You can give exact percentages and figures. According to Better Money Habits, “Try to save 10 to 15 percent of your income. If your expenses are so high that you can’t save that much, it might be time to cut back. To do so, identify nonessentials that you can spend less on, such as entertainment and dining out, and find ways to save on your fixed monthly expenses” (“Saving Money Tips – 8 Simple Ways to Save Money”). It might be painful to slash out certain areas of your life you enjoy spending money on, but in order to save money, you have to sacrifice some of your desires in order to achieve your goals.

A useful tip in addition to the previously mentioned points is that you can save money with a certain item or items in mind. Sometimes focusing on a certain object of desire can work better for people in terms of saving money. According to Better Money Habits, “One of the best ways to save money is to set a goal. Start by thinking of what you might want to save for—perhaps you’re getting married, planning a vacation or saving for retirement. Then figure out how much money you’ll need and how long it might take you to save it” (“Saving Money Tips – 8 Simple Ways to Save Money”). Whether short-term or long-term, it is good to have a goal in mind while saving money.

Finally, prioritizing the way you spend and save money is a key element. According to The Balance, “Each individual will have slightly different priorities, but no matter what those priorities are retirement and your emergency fund will come first. After that, you can focus on your other goals and building wealth. Once you determine your priorities, you can create a chart or excel sheet that lets you track your progress on your goals” (Caldwell, Miriam). So, setting priorities is a nuance you should take into account while creating your spending and saving plans.

Looking back, we can say for certain that saving money is possible for the average citizen. However, there are certain ways you have to go about it: noting down your spending, making a budget, creating a plan for saving money, setting a savings goal for particular items, and figuring out your priorities.

SPM English Papers 1 & 2

In line with the Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Menengah (KSSM), the new SPM format for SPM English is more comprehensive and covers all aspects of English learning. Since the new format is adapted from the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) it is similar to the Cambridge English paper and the grading will also follow the CEFR Measuring system.

The aspirational target for SPM leavers would be level B2 where they are equipped with adequate English for further studies and later on career enhancement.

Basic Users

• level A1 (Elementary/Beginner)
• level A2 (Pre-Intermediate/Elementary)

Independent Users

• level B1 (Intermediate/Pre-Intermediate)
• level B2 (Upper Intermediate/Intermediate)

Proficient Users

• levels C1 and C2 (Advanced)

CEFR Grading for SPM will be only up to B2.

Basically any English test is about understanding what you’re reading. Thus you should take time to comprehend what you’re reading and accomplish the task according to what is asked for.

SPM Paper 1

Paper I tests Reading and Use of English. It consists of 5 parts. The time allocated is 90 minutes. (40 marks)

Part 1: 8 Multiple Choice Questions consisting of short texts from books, magazines, advertisements etc. Candidates will choose the best answer from 3 choices given for each question. (8 marks)

ADVICE: Very quickly read through the question before reading the text given. This gives you an idea of what you will be looking for in the text. After this go through all the three options given before deciding on the answer. Make sure you read all the options as there may be slight differences in the answers given.

Part 2: Cloze Passage. You should try to get all the 10 answers correct. The passage tests you on grammar and vocabulary. There are 4 options given for each blank. (10 marks)

ADVICE: Do not attempt to fill in the gaps on your first reading of the text. First, read through the text quickly to see what it is about and determine the tense or tenses required for the text. Then go to the answers given and determine the right word for each blank.

Part 3: Here you will need to read a longer passage and answer 8 questions related to the text. This is of course a test on reading comprehension. (8 marks)

ADVICE: Take time to read the text carefully before going on to the questions. Some of the questions direct you to specific paragraphs to look for the answers. For other questions, look for key words to enable you to zoom in to the right paragraphs to look for the answers. Once again read through all the options given before deciding on your answer.

Part 4: In this section you are given a longer text from which six sentences have been removed. You have to choose the 6 correct sentences from among 8 choices given to fill in the gaps to form a correctly structured paragraph. (6 marks).

ADVICE: Here is where you have to apply your skills on ‘coherence and cohesion’ to find the correct sentence to fill the blank. Your sentence should blend in smoothly with the sentences before and after the blank.

Part 5: You are given a few paragraphs on a certain topic to read. You are given four statements which describe 4 of the paragraphs given. You have to identify the 4 paragraphs to fit the statements given. For the next 4 questions you are required to find words (one word each from the text) to complete the 4 sentences given. (8 marks)

ADVICE: Read the short texts carefully and determine the main idea in each text. This will help you decide to pick the statement which best describes the text.

SPM Paper 2

This essay and writing paper is worth 60 marks. However, the weightage in the overall SPM English paper is still at 25%. The time allocated for this paper is 90 minutes and the paper has 3 parts.

Part 1 - Students are required to write a short note or email in less than 80 words. (20 marks)

ADVICE: Read the email or short note carefully and underline the tasks given to you so that you will not miss out on any point. For example the task set out may want you to suggest

• a place to visit
• some activities to be done there (give a few - about three)
• things to bring (suggest a few - about three)

As you have only 80 words to juggle with, you must go straight to the point with a little elaboration if necessary.

Part 2 - This is Directed Writing in 125 - 150 words. (20 marks)

ADVICE: In this question, notes will be given to you to guide you on what to write. Whatever it is, the golden rule is to give at least three to four suggestions so that there will be enough subject matter for you to write about. Here you may need to give your opinion or provide proof for your suggestions. Do not write longer than required.

Part 3 - In this section, you are given 3 choices for a descriptive writing

(report/review/article/story). You will need to choose I essay to write in 200 - 250 words. (20 marks)

ADVICE: This essay calls for all your writing skills. Quickly mind-map four to five main points you want to talk about in your essay. For each point briefly jot down elaborations/examples/reasons to expand the point. Then organise your paragraphs with each main point as your topic sentence for each paragraph. Think of a good introduction and conclusion. The introduction and the conclusion should not be too lengthy.

For the writing task, you will be assessed on

task achievement - Have you answered according to what is required by the question?

What are your key points? Do you support your key points with proof or definite opinion?

coherence and cohesion - Are all your paragraphs part of a whole? Does each of the

paragraph have a key point? Do all the sentences in each paragraph talk about the key point? Use cohesive devices like thus, therefore, moreover, furthermore, on the contrary ... etc to help you.

vocabulary - You will need to show you have a wide range of vocabulary at your disposal. A wide vocabulary enables you to write better essays. To acquire a wide vocabulary you need to read books, magazines and newspapers. When you come across any good words or expressions jot them down in your vocabulary book. Learn how to use these words or expressions in the right contexts. Try not to use descriptive words more than twice in the same essay. For example:

Last holiday my whole family went for a very interesting trip to the East Coast. We stayed at an interesting holiday resort. While we were there we joined a lot of interesting activities.

Writing a paragraph like the above will show your limited vocabulary usage.

grammar - Make sure to use the correct tenses throughout your writing. Punctuations

are equally important as a wrong punctuation may contribute to misunderstanding.

5. sentence structures - Your writing should show

• variety in sentence structures ( There should be a combination of simple, compound and complex sentences in your essay. Make sentences of different lengths and with different beginnings.)
• vivid and interesting sentences - Write interesting sentences by adding adjectives to nouns, adverbs to verbs, adjective phrases and clauses. Students should learn how to use synonyms, idioms, figurative language, similes, proverbs etc. Avoid making spelling mistakes.

use of direct speech or quotes - Wherever possible adding a quote or a direct speech can break the monotony in your essay.

It’s not just one piece of paper but it holds some value, a value that has to be understood by every individual. If we quote it into a particular definition then the money is, “A measure of value, medium of exchange and means of payment consisting of notes, coins and paperless payment systems like smart cards.” It is not about some class of people but about everyone, be it the lower class or the Richie rich. Money holds so much that we even fail to anticipate. It holds power, the ability to create jealousy, manipulation, greed, and whatnot.

Needs of Saving Money

Money by far is the most necessary thing required after basic necessities i.e. food, shelter, and clothing. It is the fundamental requisite for a middle-class person to meet his ends and for the higher class to get his luxurious demands fulfilled. The fact that shouldn’t be forgotten is that that you need to save for future crises, for the business problems, for travel, for any sort of urgency, for fulfilling a long-cherished dream, or for anything. They have had grandfather or grandmother who would have given better techniques for that. But we as in everyone, not just one particular age group; the one’s who aren’t successful in saving we need to work from scratch. We should start asking prices, compare them, stop running behind brands, go for discounts and sales, use coupons, avoid spendings on junk food, and last but not least try bargaining even when we fail n number of times; surely we will master that art.

“Save it for rainy day,”  That’s my motto. When I have a choice between spending my money or putting it in my savings account at the bank, I always put it in the bank. Education is expensive. I can’t  depend on  my parents to pay all my bills. I have tuition, room and board, books, and incidental expenses to pay for. I’ll try to get a scholarship to cover some of these costs, but I know I will be responsible for a lot of the expenses. If I spend my money now, I won’t be  able to  pay for my education.

I need to save money for my education. Travel is also very expensive. I don’t mean vacation travel. I mean travel to get to and from school.  Transpacific airfare costs  a lot even special reduced fares. I first have to get to school and then, of course, I want to return to my family for important festivals and occasions. Going back and forth will be costly, but worth it. I need to save money for these trips.

Emergencies could arrive at any moment. I might have an unexpected illness while I am at school. There might be costs that aren’t covered by the school insurance. One of my family members may need help. I will have to send them money. You can’t predict emergencies like this, but you can be prepared. I need to save money for these emergencies.

When you are not rich, you cannot spend your money carelessly . You must plan ahead. I know in my life, I will have expenses for my schooling and for traveling to and from my home. I know that I will also have unexpected expenses related to unforeseen emergencies. I must be prepared. I need to save money for these events.

When  faced with  the decision of saving your money for some time in the future or enjoying your money when you earn it, quite a few would claim to enjoy their money, but others, in contrast, deem to save their money as the premier choice and that is also my point. This quite different view is based on the every possible reason.

Foremost reason  for saving the money for future use is when you need a lot of money to deal with some emergent things that happen to you, you should not worry about the fund or lend some money everywhere at that time. For example, two years ago, I spend my summer holiday in a famous scenery pot, after a wonderful trip of the first day, I lost my wallet unconsciously, then I  took out  some money in the bank to finish the trip. If you did not have some deposit, you can imagine how embarrassed you are.

Second,  I have finished my college study, and I am going to go abroad to get a master degree to enhance the ability to face the challenge in the society. Plenty of money is very important to me, so I have to save all the money that I economized for future use.

Third,  the economy condition of my family is not so good that I decide to earn enough money to buy a big house for my deeply loving parents.

This is  arbitrary to  judge saving money for future use  according only to  the excuse I mentioned in the above paragraph. But I do not deny that enjoying the life is also important to everyone because of brief life.  That is to say, I will enjoy my money if I deposit enough.

How I Spend My Money essay

One of the most exciting events in a young one’s life is when their parents give them an allowance. No matter the amount, an allowance gives us the opportunity to spend on small things that make us happy as a child.

The joy that an allowance brings is more than just the amount itself. It’s really rooted in the experience one gets in choosing how to spend it. First, there’s the anticipation of receiving an allowance. Next, there’s the excitement of thinking about all the things you’ve been wanting to get for yourself. Third, there’s the delight of actually receiving the allowance. Finally, there’s the sheer thrill of choosing what to buy and taking it home.

How and when an allowance is given, and how much is gifted to the child, depends on the guardians’ principles. There are those who provide an allowance for children to buy basic needs. But there are some who might give a little extra to give the child an opportunity to learn how to handle money well.

It must be said that not all children are privileged to have an allowance to spend on themselves. If they come from a poor family, the guardians may not have any extra finances to give. They may save up for this just once in a while.

I am very blessed that my parents gave me an allowance on a regular basis. My allowance has really taught me financial stewardship at a very young age. They also allowed me to make decisions regarding my finances, even if I made mistakes.

Saving Money at a Young Age

While my allowance isn’t a fixed amount, I have since learned that the first thing I should do is set aside a portion of it for savings. I get a third of whatever amount I get and earmark it for saving.

To make sure that I won’t be tempted to use it, my mom helped me open a bank account where I deposit the money. They opened a time deposit account, which means I cannot just withdraw from it anytime. Whenever I hesitated to go to the bank, my dad would remind me that my small deposits would turn into one big bulk of cash that could someday be used for a rainy day, or for strategic investments.

How I Spend Money with Whatever is Left

With what’s left of my allowance, I usually buy books. These are mainly documentary magazines, which I read during my leisure time. It is actually one of my hobbies. I have made it a personal tradition to always purchase a documentary magazine each time I get my regular allowance. I particularly enjoy news magazines and feature magazines. I am a lover of general knowledge. I love knowing about everything, how and why things are the way they are – whether about nature, politics, science, or geography. It is always a first on my list of hobbies.

The other bit of my regular allowance goes towards the purchase of snacks. I love yogurt and ice cream. The refrigerator at home always has a shelf specifically reserved for my yogurts.

The remainder of my allowance goes towards others. These include my family and friends. I try to buy them something nice as a way of thanking them for taking good care of me.

I also go out of the way to purchase some gifts for my siblings as well as my parents. I want to gift them with simple things, even if they were the ones who gave me my allowance. Doing this for them gives me so much satisfaction since I love making them happy. After all, what is life without happy family and friends?

Regular allowances taught me how to make wise spending decisions. I know how to handle and spend my cash, whatever amount it might be. Therefore, I am confident that when I start handling larger amounts of money in the future, I won’t be as overwhelmed. I will make it a point to remember the financial lessons I’ve learned as a child. I hope to also be able to teach others who to use their money wisely.
