Off-campus Study Spots in San Antonio That We Love

Hitting the books is an inevitable part of being in school. At any given time, you are probably going to be engaged in some type of studying or at least telling yourself you should be studying. Campus usually has some great resources, but to keep you from burning out in the same dim corner of your school’s library, here are some of the best homework haunts in town.

If you thought for a second that the Pearl would fail to be included in this comprehensive list, then you had another thing coming. Sure, we always speak highly of the Pearl and squeeze it into most every list we can muster, but that’s not without good reason. The Pearl is a phenomenal multi-use public space with free WiFi and several notable nooks and crannies where you can leisurely open up your laptop. A friend of mine, a UTSA student, enjoys posting up at Local Coffee on Saturdays during the farmers market. This setup is perfect for when you want to tackle your to-do list while enjoying yourself. It also makes for great people watching. Personally, I prefer doing work at Bakery Lorraine because it always seems less crowded, but you truly can’t go wrong at the Pearl. If you’re planning on doing some deep reading and notetaking, bring a blanket, some snacks and stretch out on the lawn across from the food hall, officially known as “Pearl Park.”

Central Library

Any public library is going to suit your needs when you need to hunker down and crank out 1,000 words by 10pm, but the downtown Central Library tends to rise above the rest in its appeal. Why wouldn’t you want to do research in the very building that San Antonio native Robert Rodriguez featured in the massively culturally important film Spy Kids 2 . The library has a lot of space, resources and study rooms that are ideal for working on group projects during finals season when campus libraries are too chaotic. Plus, its post-modern architecture contributes to a much-needed feeling of sophistication when you’re slogging through hour three of exam prep.

On a VIA Bus

Something that I have tried to integrate into my life is picking up a book whenever I have idle time versus anxiously scrolling through Twitter. This not only decreases my anxiety but also breaks up my reading and serves as an effective cushioning practice against staying up all night to cram. If you have a longer commute, or are waiting for appointments or classes, put your textbooks on day mode and crack them open.

Landa Library

Central Library may have celebrity appeal, but have you been to Landa? Located in the historic Monte Vista neighborhood near Trinity University and UIW, Landa is surrounded by shady oak trees and beautiful homes. It is essentially a converted, early 20th-century mansion that has become the background for many quinceanera, senior-class and wedding photos. Its stucco and stone-tile beauty and coziness compensate for the fact that Spy Kids 2 was not filmed here. It’s the perfect study spot for a rainy day when you want a quiet change of pace.

Candlelight Coffeehouse

Even though the St. Mary’s Strip is more famous for its nightlife than its academic reputation, here you’ll find Candlelight Coffeehouse, the place you go when you’re trying to turn studying into a study date. The romantic living-room feel of the shop makes it easy to get comfortable. Quiz your crush on one of the many vintage couches that have probably been around since the institution was founded in 1995. After you’ve put enough work in, take advantage of the bar and split a hard-earned beer or soda.

Best Places to Study in San Antonio – Libraries and Cafes

Cody library.

You may be confident that you will be able to concentrate on your studies because the library has rigorous noise regulation. The library has seating and tables available throughout, and there are also a number of study rooms that may be rented. It provides free WiFi. You can access your laptop or other devices by logging onto the library’s Wi-Fi network. It contains many different resources.

A substantial number of books, periodicals, and newspapers are available in the library. Additionally, it has PCs with an internet connection.

For UT Health students, professors, and employees, the library is open around-the-clock, including on holidays. It has a range of study areas, such as silent zones, group study rooms, and private study carrels. Along with a sizable collection of books, periodicals, and electronic resources, the library also includes PCs with internet connection.

John Peace Library

Studying in the John Peace Library is an excellent idea since it is a peaceful setting with lots of study space. But it’s crucial to remember that the John Peace Library is exclusively accessible to UTSA students, teachers, and staff. You cannot enter the library if you are not a student or employee of UTSA. So, students looking for “24 hout places to study near me” can go here.

Rosella Rosella is one of my favorite spots to study at because of its chill vibe and neat second-story overlook tables. I personally like to sit by myself upstairs, it’s a relaxing spot to focus. But just a warning, it’s always packed! Everyone knows it’s a hot spot to study and drink yummy coffee.

Halcyon Halcyon, (hal-see-yon), means peaceful, carefree, untroubled, and prosperous. The name alone is a huge reason why Halcyon is a perfect study spot. This Southtown “coffee house by day, bar and lounge by night” is open every day of the week for your study (and beverage) convenience.

The Fairview The Fairview is a favorite spot of ours, especially when it comes to quiet places to get work done. With open spaces and community tables, this coffee shop won’t burst your personal-space bubble. Plus, its coffee and grub menu are not to be missed.

Local Coffee With four locations at Pearl, Broadway, Stone Oak and Medical Center, you’re bound to find an open outlet, and let’s be honest, that’s the most important part in locating a prime study spot. Local Coffee is great for conversations or studying… or both if you’re like me and get a little sidetracked sometimes during study time.

Many agree that the best way to see San Antonio is by taking a stroll along the River Walk, or Paseo del Rio . San Antonio's most-visited tourist attraction meanders along the banks of the San Antonio River through the center of the city, connecting major attractions like Brackenridge Park and the San Antonio Museum of Art . Flanking the River Walk are dozens of restaurants, boutique hotels and sidewalk cafes shaded by colorful umbrellas. Street performers often fill the air with mariachi music.

If you want to see the River Walk from a different vantage point, try a boat tour. GO RIO offers a variety of cruises, including two-hour dinner cruises, short narrated excursions, private charters and river shuttle service from downtown to Museum Reach. Ticket fees vary depending on what type of journey you want, but you can expect to pay at least $14.50 per person, with discounts for locals, children, seniors and military members.

The Alamo The Alamo free

If there's one thing San Antonio is known for, it's the Alamo. Once a Franciscan mission, it was here that 189 Texans fought and lost their lives in 1836 during a 13-day siege by Mexican ruler, President Antonio López de Santa Anna. The fight sparked Texas' struggle for independence and today, the Alamo stands as a tribute to these men, displaying artifacts belonging to some of the Alamo's most famous defenders, including Davy Crockett and James Bowie. Visit the Alamo Church on your own or by guided tour, and then check out the many other sites of interest and artifacts on the grounds. These include the Long Barrack (the Alamo's oldest building), the Alamo Exhibit (featuring more than 500 artifacts), restored historic cannons and the Statues of Heroes, bronze statues of Alamo soldiers in the Cavalry Courtyard. At the Living History encampment, visitors can learn more about frontier life in early Texas through hands-on demonstrations.

Recent visitors said the site can get rather busy, so try to visit early in the morning or later in the evening. Most travelers also agree that even when it's packed with tourists, the Alamo is a must-see site.

Brackenridge Park Brackenridge Park free

When the River Walk seems too busy, seek refuge from the heat and the swarms of tourists in Brackenridge Park. Its 343 acres offer much in the way of relaxation: rustic stone bridges and shaded walkways are perfect for strolling, and the Japanese Tea Garden beckons to botanists. Dress casual so you can take advantage of Brackenridge's jogging trails, golf course and athletic fields. The park also hosts outdoor concerts in the natural Sunken Garden Theater. In and around the park, you'll find popular attractions like the Witte Museum and the San Antonio Botanical Garden (about a half-mile east).

The grand dame of the Pearl District, Hotel Emma is built around the original 19th-century brew house, and the aesthetic is an elegant, eclectic mix of five-star luxury and South Texas charm. Guests have access to luxurious amenities and two on-site eateries (farm-to-table restaurant Supper and gourmet cafe-market Larder) as well as Sternewirth, the hotel bar.

Aside from the Alamo , this is where all of San Antonio's historic missions – Mission San José, Mission Concepción, Mission Espada and Mission San Juan – are located, making this a must-see site for history buffs. Established along the San Antonio River in the 18th century by Franciscan friars, the missions stand as a reminder of Spanish colonizers' success in spreading Catholicism through the Southwest and into Mexico. Each mission is beautiful in its own way, from the undisturbed frescos at Mission Concepción to the Romanesque arches of Mission San Juan. Scattered around the missions are remnants of granaries, workshops and water mills.

The missions have complicated stories, as many Native Americans who lived within the missions adapted to the Spanish way of life (sometimes willingly), forgoing their religions, languages and customs. However, the missions still retain many of Native American influences including the building frescoes and mission customs. In honor of this history, the park was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.

San Fernando Cathedral San Fernando Cathedral free

If you're touring San Antonio, the San Fernando Cathedral is hard to miss. Still an active house of worship, the cathedral is one of the oldest in the country, constructed in the mid-1700s by colonists from the Canary Islands . It was here that Wild West legend James Bowie was married and that General Antonio López de Santa Anna indicated his plans for the Alamo . Local legend claims that many heroes from the Alamo battle (including Davy Crockett) are buried here in an unmarked tomb. Despite enduring damage from a fire in the 19th century, the San Fernando Cathedral maintains its antique appearance, beckoning you to tour its breathtaking interior.

While the interior is open during the day, travelers insist that you visit the church at night to take advantage of the free light show. Every Tuesday through Sunday at 9 and 9:30 p.m., a dazzling video art installation entitled "The Saga" is projected onto the building's facade.  You'll want to double-check the Main Plaza website to make sure the show is occurring.

Idyllically set along the San Antonio River, the Blue Star Arts Complex is a vibrant mixed-use property that serves as the nucleus of local art in San Antonio's Southtown. Don't miss the Contemporary at Blue Star, which hosts more than 20 exhibitions each year within its four on-site galleries (and various off-site locations). 

Aside from checking out the art and shops at the Blue Star Arts Complex, one of the most recommended activities is to rent a bicycle from Blue Star Bike Shop to either ride around neighboring King William and Southtown or along the Mission Trail (Blue Star is a trailhead for Mission Reach, which connects four of the five missions to the south). After you return your bike, enjoy beer and a burger at Blue Star Brewing Company, located next door.

Located about 15 miles northwest of downtown San Antonio, Six Flags Fiesta Texas is a year-round destination for families and adrenaline-seeking travelers. The park's attractions run the gamut from coasters to slides to pools to go-karts. With shopping options and an assortment of restaurants to boot, it's not hard to spend an entire day (or more) at Six Flags Fiesta Texas.

Past visitors recommended purchasing the Flash Pass to skip the lines. Long lines are a common complaint at Six Flags, so even if you don't purchase the Flash Pass, be sure to reserve a full day for the park to account for time spent waiting in line.

McNay Art Museum McNay Art Museum

The McNay's collection includes more than 22,000 pieces that range from post-impressionist and modern works to Native American art. Visitors will recognize artists like Edward Hopper, Paul Cézanne, Diego Rivera, Auguste Rodin and Henri Matisse. The museum is housed in a Spanish Colonial Revival residence on 23 acres of pristine green space, originally owned by artist and collector Marion Koogler McNay. The main draw may be the art, but walking around the grounds is an experience in its own right.

Museumgoers say the exhibits are great and appreciate the wide variety of art on displays. They recommend making use of the museum's free hours, which are Thursday night from 4 to 9 p.m. and the first Sunday of every month from noon to 5 p.m.

Prepare to be awed by the sheer diversity and size of the San Antonio Botanical Garden. This well-tended, 38-acre complex features wildflower-filled meadows, native gardens, a 34-bed culinary garden, an outdoor kitchen that hosts cooking classes taught be local chefs and a Family Adventure Garden with activities for kids. The striking glass structures of the conservatory house tropical palms, ancient ferns and an incredible array of plants from the rainforest to the deserts of Mexico and South Africa. Walking trails stretch out in every direction, encouraging visitors to get up-close to the plant life. 

According to park visitors, it generally takes at least two hours to explore everything.

Although it was never actually a palace, this adobe building certainly looks the part with rooms heavily decorated in 18th-century furnishings and a spectacular cobblestone patio. This National Historic Landmark and former seat of the Spanish government (dating back to when San Antonio was the capital of Spain's Texas territory) caters to both history buffs and art lovers. Explore the property at your leisure with a pamphlet given to you at the door.

Recent visitors discourage visiting this site with kids, however, as there's little here to keep tots entertained. They also warn the palace doesn't take too long to go through, so history enthusiasts may be a bit disappointed.

But the primary reason to visit the caverns is to partake in one of the five underground tour options, which include tours lit by only lanterns and others that explore the caverns' hidden passages.

Witte Museum Witte Museum

For a relaxing and mostly air-conditioned afternoon, take your kids out for some educational amusement at the Witte Museum. This often-overlooked site delves deep into natural science, anthropology and Texas history with exhibits featuring everything from dinosaurs to cave paintings to tarantulas. You can also take an in-depth look back through Texas' intriguing past by exploring the historic log cabins located on the grounds. And don't forget to check out the rotating special exhibitions covering space and other fascinating topics.

This quirky site has grown in popularity over the years, and visiting families say its collections and interactive features entertain children of all ages.

Morgan's Wonderland Morgan's Wonderland

Morgan's Wonderland is the world's only amusement park designed for children of all abilities. This sprawling, inclusive park was designed by former homebuilder Gordon Hartman — in honor of his daughter, Morgan, who has cognitive and physical disabilities – along with a local team of medical experts, engineers and therapists. There are more than 25 accessible attractions, rides and play areas, including a deluxe carousel, a Ferris wheel, an amphitheater, a catch-and-release fishing lake and a sensory play center. There's also a water park: Morgan's Inspiration Island.

In addition to the accessible rides, families appreciate the friendly, welcoming staff and affordable food offerings. They also like that you can bring in outside food, beverages and coolers, should you want your own refreshments. 

Ruby City Ruby City free

Ruby City is a contemporary art center with a unique origin story. Shortly before artist and megacollector Linda Pace passed away in 2007, she had a vision for a home for her collection of more than 800 pieces of art – a vision that literally came to her in a dream. Pace drew the images from her dream and passed them on to renowned architect Sir David Adjaye, who designed the bright crimson structure. Today, this 14,000-square-foot space is a treasure trove of paintings, sculptures and installations from both local and international artists such as Joan Mitchell, Marina Abramovic and Donald Moffett.

Visitors love Ruby City for its incredible architecture, thought-provoking exhibits and beautiful grounds.

Japanese Tea Garden Japanese Tea Garden free

Featuring koi ponds, arched bridges, shaded paths and a 60-foot waterfall, the Japanese Tea Garden is an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of downtown San Antonio. Developed in 1917, the garden is located in a former rock quarry, which may surprise some given how lush the landscape is today. Native and adaptive Texas tree species abound, and the tiered gardens and floral display are in bloom throughout the year. The restaurant at the garden, Jingu House, offers tasty bites (spring rolls, sandwiches, salads and bowls) and a menu of beer, wine and sake cocktails, if you need to refuel during your visit.

Families with kids, friends, couples and solo visitors all find this tranquil green space enjoyable. Many people come here for a photo-op (it's widely regarded as one of the prettiest places in the city).

Children of all ages are in for a treat at the DoSeum. With 68,000 square feet of interactive exhibit space, there's enough here to keep young brains and bodies engaged for hours. Kids can use their math and reasoning skills at the Spy Academy, work with tools and engage building skills at the Zachry Innovation Station, play with sound and light at the Sensations Studio and splash around outside at WaterWorks. This is just the tip of the iceberg at the DoSeum, whose exhibits are all designed with a sustainable, creative approach and a strong STEM focus. 

Parents recommend arriving early or visiting during the week to avoid long lines. Most say their kids had a great time, but a few note upkeep issues, such as broken and sticky exhibit pieces.

It doesn't get more Texas than The Buckhorn Saloon. Visitors can enjoy a beverage at a historic saloon and check out the mounts of more than 500 species of exotic wildlife from around the world. Afterwards, peruse authentic Texas Ranger artifacts including guns, badges, photographs and more at the on-site Texas Ranger Museum. Pick up a cowboy hat at the gift shop to complete the experience. 

If you're at all squeamish about taxidermies, visitors recommended skipping this attraction. The food at the cafe hits the spot. Try the Buckhorn Burger or the Lone Star Chili Bowl, and wash it all down with a Buckarita, a refreshing mix of tequila and prickly pear juice. There's a kids' menu, too.

But first, let’s talk about the Alamo. Nothing is more quintessentially San Antonio than the Alamo Historic Mission.

Its iconic image is recognizable the world over and it is usually the first stop on any SA city itinerary. Each year, more than 2.5 million visitors from all over the world head to the Alamo to learn about the history of the region.

You see, the Alamo is surprisingly modest in size. While pictures make it appear enormous, it really only requires a brief amount of time to tour (90 minutes tops, and that is if you are taking your sweet, sweet time).

It's is the only UNESCO world heritage site in Texas. While the Alamo mission may be the most famous, it certainly isn’t the only one.

Other Spanish missions include Mission Concepción, Mission San José, Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada. You can actually bike to all of them in one day! 2. Bike To See All The Missions

This is a great way to get your workout on while also experiencing one of the best things to do in San Antonio!

You can bike the approximately 10-mile-long trail to see all four missions or extend all the way north to the Alamo.

It’s one of the best things to do in San Antonio if you’re a first-time visitor! This 750 ft. tall observation tower sits high atop San Antonio’s downtown area. 48. Party hardy at Fiesta

Every April, the city of San Antonio throws out all the stops (think Mardi Gras style) to commemorate those who died at the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. Known as “the biggest party you’ve never heard of,” Fiesta provides an opportunity for SA residents to gather together to eat, drink, and make merry over a wild and raucous 10-day period. 50. Have a cocktail at the oldest bar in Texas

The Menger Bar, located at the Menger Hotel, has been serving guests (such as Teddy Roosevelt, who set up a table at the bar in 1898 to recruit his infamous band of Rough Riders), since 1887. I was a Court Clerk for 7 years then applied for the Court Coordinator position and obtained that position until I retired with 27 years of service for Bexar County. As the first of three parades for Fiesta San Antonio, take a seat under a cypress tree along the San Antonio River Walk for an illuminated night parade. Visitors will see 45 riverboats float by as each lights up the night sky. This is one of the Top Things to do at Fiesta in San Antonio.

The parade starts at 7 p.m. and lasts until 9 p.m. Advanced reserved seating is available.

Celebrate San Antonio’s unique heritage with the ultimate foodie festival. Featuring 250 different booths and nonstop entertainment from more than a dozen stages, this is the festival party.

Infused with tradition and history, the Battle of Flowers parade gives the city of San Antonio a reason to celebrate. The school kids get the day off to enjoy the fun. This is one of the Top Things to do at Fiesta in San Antonio.

First, catch the Battle of the Flowers Parade, the largest parade organized entirely by volunteers. Since 1891, ladies dressed in yellow have directed the spectators to their reserved seats for the second-largest day parade in the country.

During our visit, we secured reserved seating in the shadow of the Alamo. The Battle of Flowers Parade kicks off with a band. Military, university, and local high school bands all march. The bedazzled members of the Fiesta Court, dressed in historic sequined costumes and wearing elaborate flowered floats, enchanted the tiniest girls. Giant helium balloons and drill teams also made an appearance in the parade.

Tradition is king at Fiesta, and extended families sit in the same spots every year to make a day of it with elaborate parade-side picnics. Food vendors provide everything from traditional Tex-Mex favorites to carnival classics.

The parade starts at 9:30 a.m., and the route proceeds down Broadway and E. Grayson. Advance reserved seating is available.

Next, San Antonio pops a million glow sticks for the Fiesta Flambeau Parade, the largest illuminated night parade in the country. 700,000 people will be along the sideline, and another 1.5 million will watch on TV.

It is a lively parade that’s similar in style and length to the Battle of Flowers Parade but does not have the same participants. Fiesta San Antonio is a family affair, though younger kids might get cranky by the end. This is also one of the Top Things to do at Fiesta in San Antonio.

The parade starts at 7:00 p.m. and lasts until 10:00 p.m., the route proceeds down Broadway and E. Grayson. Advance reserved seating is available.

While in San Antonio tour the Alamo. Built in 1718 by Spanish missionaries, the Texas Revolution escalated, and the Alamo became the center of the conflict. In 1836, after a nearly two-week-long siege, the Battle of the Alamo broke out between William B. Travis, commander of the Alamo and General Santa Anna and the Mexican troops.

Though the Alamo defenders died in the battle, the legend lives on. In 2015, the United Nations designated the Alamo and the remaining four San Antonio Missions as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

After the parades, some history and a couple of tacos, the kids need to play. So head to the Yanaguana Garden, named after the Payaya Indians. There, families will find a crazy fun climbing structure, a sandscape, a splash pad and a public art area with changing rooms and restrooms located in HemisFair Park.

Since 1946 Casa Rio has been serving steaming plates of enchiladas, and it’s the original Tex-Mex restaurant on the Riverwalk. Be sure and grab a table next to Riverwalk to share a plate of nachos and sip on a margarita as the riverboats float by.

Getting around downtown san antonio.

Most major airlines service the San Antonio International Airport, which is 10 miles north of Downtown San Antonio. Cab service or public transportation is available at the airport.

Love to Ride? Try out San Antonio’s B Cycle, a bike-sharing program. The cycles are rented by the hour after a small fee and bike from one attraction to the next.

Via Streetcar, operated by San Antonio’s public transportation system VIA, offers several color-colored routes to popular tourist destinations like El Mercado and the King William District. My kids love riding the streetcars and a $4 day pass offers an easy way to get around downtown on the cheap.

Know Before You Go:

• Downtown hotels charge for parking, some offer self-parking.
• The Alamo is especially hallowed ground for Texans. Please remove your hats, and photos are prohibited inside the mission’s main building.
• With the majority of attractions located within walking distance, walk or take public transportation instead of driving since parking is limited during busy events.
• The Alamo doesn’t have designated parking though a parking lot is nearby.
• Arrive early for the Fiesta Parades before the streets close to vehicle traffic.
• Reserved seats for the parades sell out.

San Antonio Zoo to host 9th annual Monarch Fest

Activities include monarch tagging, seed giveaways, dance party.

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Zoo will host its 9th annual Monarch Fest this weekend.

The festival, which celebrates the migration and milkweed of monarch butterflies , will include classes, giveaways and other activities on Saturday and Sunday.

Here is the schedule of events for both days:

• 9-9:30 a.m.: Cowboy Photo Op – Great Lawn
• 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Seed Giveaway (First 250) – Great Lawn
• 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Plant Chat – Great Lawn
• 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Monarch Practice Tagging – Great Lawn. Learn how to hold butterflies and tag them with identification stickers properly. Zoo Crew will guide guests through the process using butterfly nets and laminated paper butterflies for practice.
• 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Pollinator or Not Game – Great Lawn. Guests are shown 10 different animals and are asked to guess which ones act as pollinators and which do not. The game teaches that many animals, not just bees and butterflies, can act as pollinators!
• Noon-4 p.m.: Monarch Character Photo Op – Roaming
• 2-2:30 p.m.: Animal Ambassador Presentation – Great Lawn
• 4:30-5 p.m.: Cowboy Dance Party – Great Lawn

Access to the festival is included with standard zoo admission. Guests can pay an extra $4 to get into the John & Greli Less Butterfly Rainforest and $6 for the Project Selva 4D Theater Showing.

“Guests of all ages can participate in educational games and crafts and learn how to help save the monarch butterfly population,” the zoo said in a news release.

San Antonio is the first city to earn the Monarch Champion designation from the National Wildlife Foundation. By doing this, the city has helped the monarch population by dedicating space to monarch habitats, displaying educational signage, and more.
