My classroom was at the end of the corridor. As I entered my classroom, my class teacher introduced me to the class and made me feel welcome. Activities like reading, solving problems in groups, and sharing our lunch boxes slowly and steadily transformed the new student with a sense of belonging.

The whole day progressed with mixed excitement as well as emotions. As the bell rang, declaring the end of the school day, the school felt like a world of possibilities where the journey was more than textbooks.

It was a sunny day and the sun was shining brightly. With my new and attractive backpack, I was moving through the school gate. It was my first day in school and I was filled with nervousness and excitement. From the tower of the building to the playground everything was bigger than life. As a school student, I was about to enter a new world.

The corridor was filled with the echo of students. As I entered the classroom, wearing a mix of curiosity and excitement, my classmates and class teacher welcomed me with a warm smile. After a round of introductions and some warm-up activities, strangers gradually started tuning into potential friends. At lunchtime, the cafeteria was filled with the smell of delicious food. However, I hesitated before joining the group of students but soon enough, I was laughing with my new friends and sharing stories. The unfamiliar were now my friends and transformed my mixed emotions into delightfulness.

The bell rang for the next class and I stepped out for new learning in my new academic home. My first day of school had many memorable stories, with old subjects and new introductions of knowledge. The day was spent learning, sharing and making new memories.

As I entered the classroom, I found many new faces. Arranging my stuff on the seat, I sat next to an unknown, who later on turned into the best friend of my life. I entered my class with a welcoming smile, and later on, I turned everything in with ease. During our lunchtime, the cafeteria was filled with the energy of students.

After having delicious food and chit-chatting with friends, we get back to our respective classrooms. Different subjects such as mathematics, science, and English never left the same impact as they did on the first day of school.

The teacher taught the lessons so interestingly that we learned the chapter with a mix of laughter and learning. At the end of the day, we all went straight to the playground and enjoyed the swings. Moreover, in the playground, I also met many faces who were new to the school and had their first day in school, like me.

While returning home, I realised that my first day was not just about learning new subjects; it was about making new friends, sailing into new vibrant classrooms, and settling myself as a new student. The morning, which was full of uncertainty at the end of the day, came to an end with exciting adventures and endless possibilities. With new experiences, I look forward to new academic and personal growth in the wonderful world of education.

My First Day At School Essay

Everything has a first time. Moments become memories. We all cherish the first time we did something or achieved something, or maybe even won our first competition. The moments you love become happy memories. Here are some sample essays on my first day at school.

100 Word Essay On My First Day At School

My first day at school is a very happy memory and I will always love to revisit it. It was a different experience altogether. From the comfort zone of my home, I was suddenly put into a completely new atmosphere – My Preschool. It looked so crowded and noisy. I still remember, on my first day, I was crying and so the memories of the morning are very blurry.

My First Day At School Essay

My parents comforted me and gave me my favourite chocolate ice-cream. I entered the classroom, and it immediately cheered my mood up. The classroom was very colourful, filled with small benches and a lot of toys and swings.

The teacher came after a few minutes. She was very friendly. After an hour, we all grouped together, and played several fun games and did many activities together. It was a very amazing day.

200 Word Essay On My First Day At School

I still remember my first day at preschool. I was very excited and nervous. Being a 5-year-old kid, it had been so hard for me to leave my home and settle in a completely new place for almost an entire day, but I was a tough kid. I was also very excited to wear my uniform. I reminded Mummy to iron my uniform many times until I checked myself and was sure of it.

My Day At School

When I entered the school with my parents on my first day, I was surprised with the fact that there were so many kids of my age, some were happy and laughing, running in the ground. While a few were very scared and crying, their parents and teachers were trying to calm them down.

I was having mixed feelings, but once I entered class, I was elated with joy. The classroom was coincidently painted with my favourite colour—Sky Blue.

In my first lesson I was taught the alphabet. But since I already knew them, the teacher called me out to recite it in front of the class. I nervously went ahead and did it. Everyone clapped for me. It was a very nice moment and made my first day of the school an unforgettable memory for me.

500 Word Essay On My First Day At School

My first day at school is an unforgettable memory for me and gave me a gift I cherish till this date. It was a cosy and comfortable evening in April when I was informed with the news that I have been admitted to Mount Libra Zee School.

I didn’t know how to react. I have seen my sister going to school daily, sometimes she was happy about it, but sometimes she was very reluctant to go and made silly excuses to avoid the school. My parents had also brought a very cute school uniform. I liked it and was excited to wear it. But I still had no idea about how the first day of my school was going to be.

How My First Day At School Started

The next morning, I dressed up very early in excitement. I ate my breakfast and Mummy packed a small tiffin box for me. At 8 o'clock, I went to the school in my father’s red car.

When I Reached My School

The school building was huge. It was painted with cartoons. I got happy when I saw my favourite cartoon characters, Tom & Jerry painted on the walls too. My father left me at the school gate to a peon after instructing him about my class. The peon picked me up very gently and started walking through the endless corridors. I could see the huge playground in the middle of the school building. It had all kinds of swings in it. For a moment, I wanted to run away to my favourite Merry-Go-Round, but I dropped that temptation and was dropped in front of my class by the peon.

My Classroom

The class had 15 chairs, all painted with cartoon characters. The wall had ABCs and numbers painted on it. It was a very cheerful and colourful environment. My eyes immediately glanced through the students already sitting there. They all were lost in their own world. Some were sobering, while some were making drawings with crayons.

After a few minutes, our teacher came. She asked each of us our names and hobbies, and then she introduced herself to us. Then, she then asked everyone to name the animals and birds painted on a picture board. We all begin singing the names. It was very fun. She was impressed with us and gave us candies at the end of the lesson.

After 2 hours, a bell rang for lunch. I took out my tiffin and started feasting on my sandwiches. A boy came to me, and said that sandwiches are his favourite. I knew his name by now, Ansh. I quickly offered him one and he was very happy. We soon became friends and chatted endlessly about Spider-Man, Iron Man and Tom and Jerry.

After learning that his favourite cartoon was also Tom and Jerry , I instantly knew I got my first school friend. 14 years forward, Ansh is still my best friend, and I am always thankful to him for making my first day at school a very fond memory.

Narrative Essay on My First Day in School

Childhood memories are the treasures of our past, vividly painting the innocence, adventures, and joy of our early years. These memories, both sweet and bittersweet, form the mosaic of our identity, influencing who we become. This essay delves into the essence of childhood memories, exploring their impact and significance through a personal journey back in time.

The Magic of Childhood

Childhood: a period of life where every day feels like a new adventure, filled with curiosity and wonder. My childhood was no different. It was a time when the smallest things felt like grand discoveries, from finding a caterpillar in the backyard to the first time I rode a bike without training wheels. These moments, though seemingly small, are monumental in the eyes of a child. They represent growth, learning, and the boundless joy of living.

A Journey Back in Time

One of my most cherished memories takes me back to my grandmother’s house, a quaint cottage nestled in the heart of the countryside. It was a place out of a storybook, surrounded by lush gardens and towering trees that whispered secrets with the wind. My summers there were filled with endless days of exploration, from the crack of dawn until the stars claimed the sky.

The Garden Adventures

The garden was a magical realm where imagination had no bounds. My cousins and I would embark on epic adventures, pretending to be explorers in a mystical land. We built forts out of branches and leaves, declaring them castles of ancient times. The garden was our kingdom, and in it, we were invincible. The laughter and shouts of our play still echo in my mind, a reminder of the carefree joy of youth.

Lessons Learned

Amidst the fun and games, childhood also presented its set of challenges and lessons. I recall a particular rainy day when our garden escapades led to a muddy disaster. Our clothes were stained, and the indoors became a canvas for our muddy footprints. The scolding that followed taught us the importance of responsibility and the consequences of our actions. Yet, even in that moment of admonition, there was love and the gentle guidance towards making better choices.

The Power of Friendship

Childhood is also a time when friendships are formed, bonds that often last a lifetime. I met my best friend under the most unusual circumstances, a mishap during a school play where a missed cue turned into a comedy of errors. Instead of embarrassment, we found laughter and a friendship that stood the test of time. It was through these friendships that I learned the value of trust, support, and the sheer joy of having someone to share life’s moments with.

As the years passed, the innocence of childhood gradually gave way to the responsibilities of adulthood. The endless days of play were replaced by schedules and commitments. Yet, the memories of those carefree days remain, a beacon of light guiding me through life’s challenges. They remind me to find joy in the simple things, to approach life with curiosity, and to cherish the bonds formed in the innocence of childhood.

Childhood memories are more than just moments of the past; they are the foundation upon which we build our future. They teach us lessons, shape our values, and influence our paths. As I reflect on my journey through childhood, I am grateful for the experiences that shaped me, the challenges that strengthened me, and the joy that filled my days. These memories are a precious gift, a reminder of a time of innocence and wonder that continues to inspire and guide me as I navigate the complexities of adulthood.

In the end, our childhood memories are a testament to the beauty of life, a collection of moments that remind us of who we are and where we’ve come from. They are treasures to be cherished, stories to be shared, and lessons to carry with us as we journey through life. For students participating in an essay writing competition, delve deep into your own reservoir of memories, and let the magic of your childhood illuminate your writing. Through your words, you have the power to transport your readers back in time, to relive the wonder, the lessons, and the joy of childhood.

My first day of school is a memory that has been etched into my mind, a profound experience that marked the beginning of an important journey. The anticipation, the nervousness, and the excitement are feelings that are as vivid today as they were years ago.

The night before the first day of school was a swirl of emotions. The anticipation was overwhelming, a mixture of joy and anxiety. I remember laying out my uniform, packing my bag with utmost care, and struggling to fall asleep, my mind buzzing with questions. What would my teacher be like? Would I make new friends? Would I be able to fit in?

Walking through the school gates, I was engulfed by a wave of nervousness. The school seemed like a colossal maze, full of unfamiliar faces. I remember the thrill of learning something new, the satisfaction of understanding a concept, and the joy of participating in classroom activities. The classroom became a sanctuary, a place where I could explore, question, and grow.

One of the most significant aspects of the first day of school was making new friends. The shared experience of being in a new environment, the common struggle of navigating through unfamiliar territory, and the mutual curiosity to learn, all served as a strong foundation for the friendships that were formed. These friendships, some of which have lasted till today, began as tentative interactions on that first day.

School gives us the best time of our lives. Everything seems very easy to understand. We learn, study, and also enjoy ourselves in school. School life gifts us with friends, good teachers, and good memories. And the best moment of our lives is the first day of school. Everything seems new and different. Yet it is a treasure of our lives. We can never forget the days of our school, especially the first day.

The first day of school is perhaps the most important. It is not only the beginning of our studies but also the start of a new life. We all remember how on the first day we had cried. We hated going to school back then. We thought someone will take us away from our parents and house. So parents always stay with us on our very first day. We all have to sit for an admission test. We prepare the basics back at home and then give the examination.

All children at the age of three are admitted to primary schools. Once our examination gets over, we get admission into the new school. We feel happiest as we get new school bags, books, copies, and other things. The first journey to school is an exciting one. Holding the hands of our parents, we attend the school.

But we wait every morning to visit school and meet our friends. The best part of school life is having friends to play with.

Everything remains very soft and innocent. From the first day, the teachers and the school building become very dear to us. So just like the first day, we cry when we leave our school. I don’t really remember much of what happened as a child. All I know is that I grew up in a pretty normal household with a mom, dad and an older brother. Not much of the outside world scared me, or even intimidated me. I didn’t even know that there was much of an outside world. Everything I had at home, and around the neighborhood was everything I knew, and that was it. My mom efficiently prepared me for my first day of school in the way she thought to be the best. She would anticipate the day it would come, and assure me that everything was going to be okay. I remember her talking about the games we would play, how I would get to meet other kids my age and that there would be a nice teacher to guide me along my way. It didn’t sound that scary. I mostly liked the idea of getting snacks in the middle and getting to play with new toys, nap time wasn’t really my thing, though; I could always do that at home. There were some things my eager six-year-old self was excited about, but I never understood exactly why I had to go to school. My first day of school, being a big change in my life, is something I will always remember and relate to other dramatic changes which I have gone through. I’m sure that most people can relate to this in a sense that everyone has gone through a significant change in their life, no matter how mundane the event may be.

I wondered what the other kids were like, and why they had to go to school, too. I wondered if they colored, played or did things as well as I did. Probably not. My mom explained to me that I’ll be learning new things, and that I’ll have to go to school five times a week. For me at that age, a week seemed very long. What if I didn’t want to go? What if I just wanted to stay home? I really had mixed emotions about the subject.

After much prepping, the first day of school finally came. I remember getting out of the car and looking up at the structure in front of me. The building had colorful painting on its bricks on the sides, with a bright blue door. My eyes grew bigger, and I didn’t even realize I was holding my breath. All my mixed emotions drained into one at that very moment – fear. I was not sure of exactly what to expect, and I didn’t know anyone in there. How would I call my mom if I wanted something, if I was hungry or if I hurt myself? Suddenly, all of this school business did not seem like such a good idea. I turned to my mom who was holding her hand out to me and smiling. I gave her a worried look, which she caught on to right away. She stepped closer and nudged me towards the door. After she gave me a kiss on the forehead, that was it, she was gone and I was stuck in school, a place I was so unfamiliar with.

The bell rang and I proceeded to walk through the door. I took a big breath and looked around. The room was so bright and colorful and there were so many different artworks posted on the walls. I clearly remember a sea of pinks, yellows, blues and greens. There were pictures of animals, fruits and houses all drawn by other kids decorating the room. I recall there being desks desks with paper and crayons, and there was even a little corner with toys! This calmed me down, and made me feel like it was not as bad as I thought.

I looked at the other kids coming in; I did as they did and left my backpack on a hook near the door, and took a seat in an empty chair closest to me. We were greeted by an older lady; she told us that she was going to be our teacher. She started us off by calling us from a list one by one; to make sure we were all there. I also remember having name tags of some sort, I think we kept those on even a week after school started. At that time, I didn’t get why, I already knew my name after all.

We learned some songs, played a lot of games and because we all did what we were told, we got some time to play with the toys in the corner of the room. Next thing I know, we were given snacks. We then got to play outside on the playground. Because of all the playing, we got tired pretty soon, and they let us sleep. After a bit more games, another bell rang and the teacher told us it was time to go home. The day seemed really long since we did so much, but none of it was boring.

As soon as I grabbed my bag and stepped outside the door, I saw my mom waiting for on the side walk. I ran to her, and clearly remember feeling like I haven’t seen her in such a long time. During the car ride back home, I talked tirelessly about how the day went and all the new things I did, and how the other children were just like me, and most of them like the same things I liked. I asked her when I’ll go back, and I just got excited when she told me when I wake up in the morning, I’ll be going again.

I don’t remember ever feeling that anxious and excited all at once, all my expectations about school were mostly wrong. According to most researchers specializing in childhood psychology, children do tend to have very unrealistic expectations about their first day of school (Kendrick).

I had a pretty average childhood before kindergarten; I guess all my fears about changing my environment just came up because I was not sure of what to expect leaving the comforts of my home. This was the first significant time in which I realized that there is a bigger world out there, and there are so many things to learn, people to meet and things to do. I felt so grown-up at that time, being able to go somewhere where I didn’t need my parents, it was all just me, no help. I guess that this first day of kindergarten is much like all the other first days of school – like the first day of middle school, high school and even college. I built myself up with all these ideas, and you get all worked up about them, but once you’re there and you get the flow of how things are done, it becomes easier. When there is an event in your life, no matter how mundane or usual it may seem, it can change how you view things. Looking back at my first day of kindergarten and evaluating my thoughts as compared to what actually happened, I can say that I got overwhelmed more with the idea of kindergarten more than anything. Once you get over those negative thoughts in your head, you realize that it’s not that bad. You just have to rise above your thoughts and your fears. My first day of kindergarten will always be that event I’ll remember which changed how I saw things in life.

My First Memories Of Learning To Start School: A Journey Into Education

My First Memories Of Learning To Start School: A Journey Into Education

My first memories of starting school go back to when I was 6 years old. It was a pivotal moment for me, as I was finally going to embark on a journey of learning, something that I had eagerly anticipated. I remember feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness as my parents dropped me off at the school gates.

Being in charge of my own learning was a new experience for me. Up until that point, my parents had always been there to teach me the basics of reading and writing, but now it was time for me to take the next step and learn from a real teacher.

In my first year of elementary school, I vividly remember my teacher, Mrs. Brown. She would always tell us that learning is a lifelong process and that we should always strive to improve ourselves. She used creative and realistic ways to make the subjects come alive, whether it was through interactive maps or hands-on science experiments.

One of the most memorable moments from my early schooling years was when Mrs. Brown taught us how to write our first essay. She had us analyze the narrative elements in the story of “The Three Little Pigs” and then write our own version of the tale. I remember feeling a mix of emotions as I put pen to paper, knowing that this would be my first real piece of writing. Mrs. Brown always encouraged us to be reflective and express our emotions through our writing.

Starting school also meant making new friends. I quickly formed a close bond with my classmates, and we became the besties who would always stick together. We would have lunch together, share our tiffin boxes, and daydream during boring lectures. These friendships made the difficult times easier and the high times more enjoyable.

As the years went by, I continued to learn and grow. From learning long division to analyzing Shakespeare’s plays, my education journey was filled with ups and downs. There were times when I struggled with homework and exams, but my parents were always there to support and guide me.

Looking back, I realize the impact that my early schooling had on shaping the person I am today. It taught me the importance of literacy, the love of learning, and the value of hard work. It also taught me how to interact with others, and be open to different perspectives.

Discovering the World of Education: My First Memories

When I was little, starting school felt like a big moment in my life. I was excited to learn new things and meet new friends. My journey into education began in grade 1, and I still remember my first day vividly.

I walked into the classroom with a mix of anticipation and nervousness. The teacher welcomed me and introduced herself as Mrs. Johnson. She was a substitute teacher, as our regular teacher was on maternity leave. Mrs. Johnson was kind and patient, and she helped ease my fears about starting school.

I quickly learned the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Mrs. Johnson taught us how to add numbers together, and I was proud when I could solve simple addition problems like 3 + 6. We also learned about the world through maps and explored different topics in science. One of my favorite activities was learning about the surface of Mercury and how it differed from Earth.

While I enjoyed learning in school, I also loved reading outside of the classroom. I liked reading whatever I could get my hands on, from books to newspapers. One of my favorite books was “Winnie the Pooh,” and I would often get lost in the imaginative world of Hundred Acre Wood.

As I reflect on those early years of schooling, I realize how much those experiences shaped my love for learning. I learned how to analyze and research topics, write essays, and analyze documents. These skills have been invaluable throughout my life.

During that period, homework was not a major part of our young lives. Our teachers kept the homework to a minimum, allowing us to focus on classroom activities and learning through play. We had field trips to museums and zoos, which further enhanced our understanding of the world around us.

Recalling those moments now, I am grateful for the personal growth and knowledge I gained in those early years of education. It was during this time that I learned the importance of helping others and the value of public schooling. I remember some of the names of my classmates and the friends I made along the way.

Overall, my first memories of learning to start school were filled with curiosity, excitement, and a thirst for knowledge. Those early experiences laid the foundation for a lifelong love of learning and a desire to always seek out new opportunities for growth.

  • Finding joy in reading books like “Winnie the Pooh”
  • Developing skills in research and analysis
  • Enjoying classroom activities and field trips

The Excitement of Starting School

When I first entered the school building, I was in awe. The classrooms seemed so big and full of possibilities. I learned that I was now going to be a part of a class and have classmates. The thought of making new friends was both thrilling and daunting at the same time.

During the first few days, we were taught basic things like how to hold a pencil and write our names. We learned how to count from 1 to 10 and how to analyze simple shapes. English lessons were also a part of our daily routine. We were taught how to read simple words and sentences, and I remember feeling proud when I could read a sentence by myself.

One of the most memorable parts of starting school was the lunch break. As a young child, I always looked forward to having my tiffin with me. I loved sitting with my classmates and sharing stories while eating. I remember one day I dropped the tiffin, and everyone started laughing. It was embarrassing, but it taught me an important lesson to be careful and not to let my actions affect others.

Another thing that I remember vividly about starting school was the silence during exams. It was a different feeling, having to be quiet and concentrate on the tasks at hand. I remember using a long ruler and a duster as a substitute for those who did not bring their own. It was a small but significant memory from my early school days.

The school premises were always well-kept, and I have fond memories of the colorful classrooms and the clean bathrooms. The teachers were friendly and always encouraged us to learn and explore new things. The school also organized various activities and field trips, which added to the excitement of being in school.

Looking back, I realize how starting school was not just about academic learning but also about growing as an individual. It was a period of self-discovery and being in charge of my own education. I learned to be independent and take responsibility for my actions, as well as to collaborate with others and work as a team.

Starting school was not always easy, and there were times when I felt overwhelmed or struggled with certain subjects. But with the support of my teachers and classmates, I always found a way to overcome the difficulties. They became my besties and helped me navigate through the challenges.

Early Lessons: Reading and Writing Begin

I still remember my first teacher, Mrs. Winnie, who was in charge of our class. She had a warm and nurturing approach that made learning enjoyable. Mrs. Winnie used different activities and games to make the learning process fun and engaging.

One of the ways she taught us reading was through the use of flashcards. Each flashcard had a word written on it, and we had to read it aloud. Mrs. Winnie would then analyze our reading skills and provide helpful tips on pronunciation and comprehension. This method helped us associate words with their meanings, improving our vocabulary and reading abilities.

Writing, on the other hand, started with the basics. We learned how to write individual letters by tracing them on paper. Mrs. Winnie provided each of us with notebooks and pencils, and we spent hours practicing our penmanship. I still remember the feeling of pride when I could write my name without any help.

As we grew older, the lessons became more challenging. We started learning how to write sentences and paragraphs. Our vocabulary expanded, and we were encouraged to write short stories and essays. Mrs. Winnie taught us the importance of organizing our thoughts and expressing ourselves coherently.

Moments That Stood Out

One particular memory that stands out is when Mrs. Winnie gave us a science project. We had to create a presentation on a topic of our choice and present it to the class. I chose to talk about the solar system, and I was fascinated by the different planets and their unique characteristics.

Another memorable experience was when we had our first spelling bee. Mrs. Winnie would give us a list of words to study at home, and the next day, we would have an exam. I always felt a mix of excitement and nervousness during these spelling competitions. The feeling of accomplishment when I spelled all the words correctly was something I will never forget.

The Importance of Reading and Writing

Looking back, I realize the significance of those early lessons in reading and writing. They were the building blocks of our education, giving us the tools to navigate through different subjects and explore new ideas. Without a strong foundation in language, it would have been challenging to excel in other areas.

Reading and writing also had a profound impact on my emotional development. Through books, I could feel and experience different emotions, empathizing with characters and understanding their journeys. Writing, on the other hand, allowed me to express my own thoughts and feelings, giving me an outlet for self-expression.

These early lessons in reading and writing not only shaped my academic life but also fostered a love for learning that has stayed with me throughout the years. They were the first steps in a lifelong journey of knowledge and growth.

The Impact of Reading and Writing on Life

Reading and writing have always been a significant part of my life, starting from a young age. Even before I could fully comprehend the words on the page, I remember the emotions and the excitement that came from being read to by my parents. They would often read stories about Winnie the Pooh or Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? These early experiences with books and storytelling had a profound impact on me and laid the foundation for my love of reading.

As I grew older, my passion for reading became even more apparent. I would spend hours getting lost in the pages of a book, traveling to far-off places and experiencing things I could only dream of. Books became a way for me to explore different worlds and escape from the difficulties of daily life. They became a source of comfort and inspiration.

When I started elementary school, reading and writing became an integral part of my daily routine. I vividly remember the trips to the library with my class, where we would spend hours browsing the shelves and selecting books to take home. The moment I opened a new book and started reading was always exciting and full of anticipation.

Writing, on the other hand, was a more reflective and personal experience for me. I would often keep a journal where I would write down my thoughts and feelings. It was a way for me to process my emotions and make sense of the world around me. Writing became an outlet for self-expression, and it helped me explore my thoughts and ideas in a more meaningful way.

In school, writing took on a more academic tone. I learned how to structure essays and convey my thoughts and arguments in a clear and concise manner. It was during this phase that I realized the impact that words can have on others. The power of language to inform, persuade, and inspire became evident to me, and it sparked a desire to become a better writer.

Looking back, I can see how reading and writing have shaped my life in many ways. They have helped me become a more reflective thinker, a better communicator, and a lifelong learner. They have opened up new worlds and introduced me to different perspectives and ideas. They have given me the ability to connect with others and to understand the experiences and emotions of people different from myself.

Now, as a teacher, I strive to instill a love of reading and writing in my students. I know the impact that these skills can have on their lives and their futures. I encourage them to read widely and explore different genres and authors. I provide them with opportunities to write creatively and imaginatively. I want to empower them to become critical thinkers and effective communicators.

Unlocking the Power of Education: My Journey

Education has always played a central role in my life, shaping me into the person I am today. From my first day of kindergarten to the present day, my experiences with school have been instrumental in my growth and development.

I remember the excitement and nervousness I felt on my first day of school. I was six years old and eager to learn. As I walked into the classroom, I was greeted by colorful posters, maps on the wall, and a chalkboard with a duster resting on the tray. The teacher, Mrs. Brown, had a warm smile on her face as she welcomed each student. I immediately felt at ease, ready to embark on this new phase of my life.

While I was excited to start school, I was also a bit apprehensive about leaving my parents behind. However, as time passed, I made new friends, we created our own little world in the classroom with our notebooks and pencils, and together we learned how to read, write, and do basic math. These were the best times of my early school years.

One of my most vivid memories from elementary school is of the day I learned how to use the internet. I was nine years old, and our teacher showed us how to use Google to find information. It was like a treasure hunt, a journey into a world of endless knowledge. From that day on, Google became my new bestie.

Science was always my favorite subject. I loved conducting experiments and understanding how things worked. I remember a particular science project where we had to create a volcano using a tape, a bottle, and some baking soda. The day we made our volcanoes erupt, it felt like pure magic.

As I grew older, my love for writing and literacy became more apparent. I excelled in English and took great pride in my writing assignments. I remember writing my first autobiography in fourth grade. It was a non-fiction essay about my life up until that point, and it felt like a full-circle moment when I submitted it.

Reflective Memories and Impact on Others

While I have many fond memories of my school days, there were also times of struggle and self-doubt. I remember the anxiety of preparing for exams and the pressure to perform well in order to achieve good grades. It was during these times that I learned the importance of perseverance and hard work.

One memory that stands out is from the day I got my first bad grade. It was in a math exam, and I had studied hard but still didn’t do well. I was disappointed and felt like a failure. However, my teacher assured me that one grade doesn’t define me and encouraged me to keep trying. This moment taught me the importance of resilience and taught me that failure is just a temporary setback.

As I reflect on my journey through education, I realize the impact it has had on my life and the lives of others. Education has not only taught me academic knowledge but also life skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication. It has given me the tools to navigate through life and pursue my dreams.

Education has not only shaped me as an individual but has also influenced those around me. I have become a source of inspiration for my younger siblings and cousins, encouraging them to take their education seriously and strive for excellence.

Tips for a Reflective Essay

Through education, I have unlocked the power to dream big, to challenge myself, and to make a positive impact on the world. Looking back, I am grateful for all the memories I have created and the lessons I have learned. It was a cold morning and I was shivering because I did not want anything to spoil the new school uniform I was wearing.

The previous day my Mother, Father and I had visited the school to see my class and meet my class teacher and so I knew where I had to go and who would be my teacher.

Set 12: essay on my first day in school.

My first day at school is a memorable one. I saw boys go to school and I also felt a keen desire to be among them. One day, when I was hardly seven, my father took me to the school in a neighbouring village at a distance of a kilometre and half from my own. It was a small primary school. There were two teachers, the head teacher and his assistant.

We went straight to the head teacher, as he was already known to my father. The head teacher scanned me from head to foot and remarked that I seemed to be intelligent and promising. My father offered him the sweets that we had brought with us. The sweets were distributed among the students of the school and I was admitted to the first infant class. My father left and I was sent to the assistant teacher.

The assistant teacher was a bug-bear for me. He carried in his hand a big cane. He now beats one boy most mercilessly and then another. I trembled with fear in my shoes. My blood curdled cold in my veins. I cursed my stars. At last, the teacher turned his attention towards me. He taught me the first few letters of the Urdu alphabet and asked me to memorise them. On a gloomy afternoon, with an aching heart, I was cramming the first few letters of the Urdu alphabet. What on earth did they mean? What was their sense? It all seemed absolute rigmarole to me. However, there was one thing I could always do; I could learn by heart. In due course, the teacher returned.

“Have you learned it?” he asked. “I think I can say it, Sir,” I replied. I gabbled it off. He seemed to be satisfied with it. My fears were a bit allayed. I hated the school. What a life of anxiety at the school! I wept in my heart at the loss of my freedom. I yearned for my mother’s kisses, love and tenderness. I badly missed the cakes and biscuits. I badly missed my friends. I was deprived of my games and pranks. I lost all smiles and joy. I counted the minutes and hours to the end of the daily round of school.

200 During the recess period, all my class fellows crowded around me. One pulled my ear, another my shirt and the third pulled my hair. A boy knocked me to the gro ground. I received bruises on my knees and elbows. I could not help crying.

At 4 o’clock, the last bell rang. I made for home along with my village fellows. I told everything to my mother. I wept but she consoled me and advised me to bear it all. My fears were not dispelled. But there was no way out of it. I must go to school and face the teacher’s rod.

Essay on My School for Students and Children

500+ words essay on my school.

Education is an essential part of our lives. We are nothing without knowledge, and education is what separates us from others. The main step to acquiring education is enrolling oneself in a school. School serves as the first learning place for most of the people. Similarly, it is the first spark in receiving an education. In this essay on my school, I will tell you why I love my school and what my school has taught me.

We have all been to school and we have loved each and every moment we have spent over there as those were the building blocks of our lives. A school is a place where students are taught the fundamentals of life, as well as how to grow and survive in life. It instils in us values and principles that serve as the foundation for a child’s development.

My school is my second home where I spend most of my time. Above all, it gives me a platform to do better in life and also builds my personality. I feel blessed to study in one of the most prestigious and esteemed schools in the city. In addition, my school has a lot of assets which makes me feel fortunate to be a part of it. Let us look at the essay on my school written below.

Why I Love My School?

From kindergarten through primary and secondary school, and subsequently, to faculty, school is a place where we always study, grow, and establish ourselves, socialize, be a friend, help others, and love and be loved. School is a buddy that will accompany us from the beginning of our youth till the conclusion of our lives. At school, we share all of our pleasures and sorrows, and we constantly rely on one another. This is made possible through the friendships we share. They assist us in effortlessly overcoming difficulties, sharing moments of enjoyment together, and looking forward to new paths.

My school strikes the perfect balance between modern education and vintage architecture. The vintage buildings of my school never fail to mesmerize me with their glorious beauty. However, their vintage architecture does not mean it is outdated, as it is well-equipped with all the contemporary gadgets. I see my school as a lighthouse of education bestowing knowledge as well as ethical conduct upon us.

Teachers have the power to make or break a school. The teaching staff is regarded as the foundation of any educational society. It is their efforts to help kids learn and understand things that instil good habits and values in their students. While some concepts are simple to grasp, others necessitate the use of a skilled teacher to drive the home the idea with each pupil.

In contrast to other schools, my school does not solely focus on academic performance. In other words, it emphasizes on the overall development of their students. Along with our academics, extra-curricular activities are also organized at our school. This is one of the main reasons why I love my school as it does not measure everyone on the same scale. Our hardworking staff gives time to each child to grow at their own pace which instils confidence in them. My school has all the facilities of a library , computer room, playground, basketball court and more, to ensure we have it all at our disposal.

For me, my school is more than simply an educational institution; it is also my second family, which I established during my childhood. A family of wonderful friends, outstanding teachers, and fond school memories. I adore my school because it is where I learn how to be a good citizen and how to reach my goals. School is the only place where we make friends without judging them. We feel comfortable spending time with those close friends no matter what the situation.

What has My School Taught Me?

If someone asked me what I have learned from my school, I won’t be able to answer it in one sentence. For the lessons are irreplaceable and I can never be thankful enough for them. I learned to share because of my school. The power of sharing and sympathy was taught to me by my school. I learned how to be considerate towards animals and it is also one of the main reasons why I adopted a pet.

essay on my first in school

School is an excellent place to learn how to be an adult before entering the real world. Those abilities pay dividends whether you choose to be the bigger person in an argument or simply complete your domestic tasks. When you open your mind to new ideas, you gain a lot of influence in society. Picking up unexpected hobbies on your own will teach you more about what you like to do than simply completing things for a grade.

A school is a place where I developed my artistic skills which were further enhanced by my teachers. Subsequently, it led me to participate in inter-school completions through which I earned various awards. Most importantly, my school taught me how to face failures with grace and never give up on my ambitions, no matter what happens.

Schools also offer a variety of extracurricular activities such as Scouts and Guides, sports, N.C.C., skating, school band, acting, dancing, singing, and so on. Our principal also used to give us a short lecture every day for about 10 minutes about etiquette, character development, moral education, respecting others, and gaining excellent values. As a result, I can claim that what I am today is solely due to my school, which is the best institution in my opinion.

Teamwork is an important ability that schools teach. Schools are frequently the first places where youngsters have the opportunity to collaborate with children who are different from them. Collaboration is essential for the team and individual success. Students are taught that the success of a team depends on each individual component functioning together.

To sum it up, studying in one of the respected schools has helped me a lot personally. I will always be indebted to my school for shaping my personality and teaching me invaluable lessons. It has given me friends for life and teachers that I will always look up to. I aspire to carry on the values imbibed by my school to do well in life and make it proud.

My First Day at School

Essay No. 01

After about two months of summer vacation, our school reopened on the 16th of July, the 15th of July being the Sunday. After a long relaxation of two months inhabits to wake up late in the morning, I got up early in the morning. I took my breakfast and left for school. The school was to open at 9 a.m.

On one hand, I seemed to be quite enthusiastic to be again with my friends whom I really missed during the vacation but on the other, I seemed to be averse to the routine of the school which was not so exhilarating for its disciplined code of attending classes and reading lessons, solving sums and doing laboratory work Still there was something which made this routine somewhat worth doing.

On the way to school, I met my friends. Everyone looked cheerful. As we reached the school gate, we heard the ringing of the call bell. We first buried to our classrooms to keep our bags and then to prayer ground to attend the prayer. At the end of the prayer, our Principal addressed the boys. In his address, the Principal mentioned Wordsworth’s observation, “A twig is bent, so the tree will grow”. In relation to tender and delicate students he said that the minds of students were like photographic plates, whatever impressions are left on them, they retain it. So he advised us to cast the impressions which would include love of the motherland, devotion to duty, regularity, and punctuality. Then at the end of his address, we all went to our classes.

On the first day, we did not have our regular studies. Most of the teachers were busy with new admissions. Moreover, the students were also not in the mood to study. The students were talking about their experiences of the summer vacation. I told them about my visit to Ajanta, Allora, and stay in Nanital for a fortnight. In school, 1 found a large number of changes, broken window panes had been replaced, rooms were whitewashed and the furniture repaired. Everything looked new. The thing which I liked most was the water cooler, which was a great comfort to us in summer.

While we were enjoying gossiping in the class, the bell announced the beginning of the recess period. This year a new canteen was installed in the school. It was run by ‘Students Cooperative Society”. I went to the canteen with my friends. The tea, coffee, cold drinks, and snacks all were available at cheap rates. I had a cold drink and some snacks there. In the meantime, the call bell rang and we all went back to our classes.

After the fifth period, all the students assembled in the hall. The new corners were seated on the stage. At first, the Principal welcomed the new students. Some of them seemed to be very active and smart. They told about their likings and hobbies, which were admirable. In the end, the Principal welcomed the teachers. Soon the function came to an end. returned home with the sweet and happy memories of the day.

Essay No. 02

My first day at school was the beginning of my life. The day was significant for me and my family. My father had been looking forward to this day with great hope as he wanted that I should adjust in my class and rise in life, through hard work and co-operation.

Early that morning there was much stir in the family. My elder brother was particularly happy. That made him look responsible as I was kept under his charge. My father bought candies and we proceeded towards the school.

I was taken to the Principal’s office. The Principal was a big man with heavy, and bushy eyebrows. I almost dreaded him in the beginning. But soon I found that under those bushy eyebrows he had one of the softest pairs of eyes. And he spoke softly. He patted my back and asked me questions. I answered his questions without any feeling of fear. He talked to my father. Then my father took me to another gentleman who I learnt later was my class teacher.

He was tall, lean, and bespectacled. He greeted my father. He stretched his long arm and took me under his arm. He talked politely to me. My -father gave him the packet of candies and requested him to introduce me to the class and distribute the candies among my classmates. My father then took leave of him.

My teacher took me to my class. He told the boys that I was their new classmate. He then distributed the candies my father had given to him.

I was given a seat in the class. It was a new place and soon I started feeling lonely. Nobody in the class was known to me and no one talked to me. By recess time I was almost fed up with my school. I wanted to go home. The bell rang for recess. The boys from all the classes ran out. They flooded the school courtyard. But I stood alone in the crowd of strangers. I still remember how small I was then. Being unable to bear it any longer I began to cry. It was only a few minutes but it seemed ages before in brother arrived there. With him was another boy whose brother was also studying in my class. He brought him and introduced him to me. This was my first acquaintance in school. After the recess, we re-entered the classroom.

My teacher was told how I had cried during recess. He spoke politely to me. I liked him. I liked my new acquaintance also. Soon I felt calm and since that day I had never cried in school.

My First Day in School

When I passed class V, my father took me to Jain Happy Senior Secondary School, Daryaganj, Delhi.  My father took us there in his car. The sight of the grand building made me nervous. I entered the main gate. Many boys were sitting there in a group.

We went to the Principal. My father had a talk with him. My father filled out the admission form. He admitted me to the sixth standard. Then my father left for his office.

My elder brother was in the 8th grade in the same school. I still remember my first day in school. It was an interesting day for me. I was nine years old at that time.

There were about 3o students in the class. They were in their uniforms. They were reading the first lesson from the English Book. The class teacher was kind. She made me sit in the first row. She introduced me to other boys. Then there was teaching for four periods. The students were nice and friendly.

At recess, I went to the canteen. My brother was already there. We had our refreshment together. We played with toys.

At 12.30 the bell rang, and the school was over. My mother came to take me home. I always remember my first day in school.

Essay No. 04

Life is full of new experiences. One of them is going to school for the first time.

A school is a place of learning for a child, where they form new associations and come in contact with other children of their age, who may be of different temperaments or status from each other but are placed equally. It is here that they prepare themselves for their future life. This is the reason it is said that the education received in the school is the foundation of a child’s career.

I remember I was only five when I first went to school. I was very excited. It was a primary school. The experience of the first day at school is still fresh in my mind after all these years.

I was admitted to the K.G. Class. The school was small with eight rooms and there were about twelve or fifteen teachers in total.

My Class Teacher Miss Gupta was a very nice and soft-spoken lady who treated all the children like her own. Since I was a bit nervous in the new environment, she encouraged me to open up with the other students of the class.

In school, I got my first lesson on the alphabet in English and after those other lessons on Hindi and Maths. But the lesson I enjoyed most was the drawing, in which we could play with the colours. I also enjoyed other activities like clay modeling, building things with blocks. I would especially like to mention the fun I had on different types of rides and swings.

My first day at school was full of joy.

Whenever I ponder over my school days, the reflection takes me to a meek quiet boy. A reserve guy with quiet habits, feeling shy of everything. I find him dressed in khaki shorts and a white shirt, a pair of bright shining shoes with white socks. Well combed hair and slightly oiled face may be due to perspiration or nervousness. My father was transferred to Jalandhar from Shimla. The transfer came in the mid-session of the fourth class. I moved quite extensively from corner to corner with my father for admission, but everywhere, the answer was negative. It was after laborious efforts that D.A.V. Public School accepted to accommodate me in the new class.

In the next stage, my father left me at the school gate the next day and asked me, to proceed to my class. He perhaps felt that I was grown up enough to protect my own interest. I was moving towards the stairs with a very heavy and hesitant mind. Nobody was known to me except my class teacher who examined my papers for admission. He was perhaps sitting in the classroom because the morning assembly was already over. He was marking attendance as I stood at the entrance gate of the class. I was told that there were forty students in the class and myself was forty-one. Anyway, very reluctantly I peeped into the room. The teacher saw me and said, “Hello Sunil, so you have come. Come in and take your seat with Suresh on the first bench.” The only student on the desk accommodated me very willingly and provided me a seat with a helping and affectionate hand. Soon we were good friends. We were taught a new topic in the social study by the teacher. He asked some questions from the students which were not answered well. I took the initiative and answered all the questions to the best of my knowledge. The teacher was satisfied and enlisted me among the best ten students in the class.

It was recess time soon after and we all started playing in the central ground. Suresh introduced me to many other students of the class. The bell rang and we rushed to the class. Similar phases of the morning session repeated in the next period of Mathematics and English. The concerned teachers appreciated my capability at studies and this helped me to gain better confidence in myself. Soon the periods were over we were asked to pack up for return. My class teacher guided me to proceed towards the bus. The conductor shook hands with me and welcomed me for a good seat. It was a beautiful and well-provided bus. I reached home in an hour. My mother was waiting for me on the main crossing. She asked me about the school and its teaching staff. I gave all the best appreciation to my teachers and told my mother that I had formed a good number of friends and that I enjoyed the day very nicely. She was happy that my silence and hesitation has ultimately wound up for good. She felt happy that I could fit in well in the new setup and atmosphere.

My School Essay 500 Words

The place where children as the leaders of tomorrow study and where the future of the nation is shaped are called schools. Education is an essential weapon for tomorrow, so the good schools of today are important for the best future of a nation. Schools are the center of learning where we attend classes on various subjects, interact with the teachers, get our queries

answered, and appeared in exams. In my school, learning is more like a fun activity, because of the extra-talented teaching staff.

My school is a government primary school located on the outskirts of the city. Usually, when people think about a government school, they perceive it to be at an isolated location and have poor basic amenities and teaching facilities. But, despite being a government school, my school defies all such speculations. Teachers of my school are not only knowledgeable about the subjects they teach but also are skilled enough to teach through fun activities. For example, our physics teacher explains every concept by stating real-life examples that we could relate to. This way we not only understand the subject better. Moreover, not a moment I remember, when any teacher had ever replied rudely to any of the students. They always patiently listen and provide answers to all the queries posed to them. Learning at my school is fun and it is made possible only because of the teachers.

My school is very important in my life, in a way even more than my family. My family gives me love, care, and affection, and provides for all my other essential needs. But, all of this isn’t enough to make me a good human being and succeed in life.  Favorably, I am lucky enough to be enrolled in a prestigious school, and gaining a wonderful education, looking forward to realizing my dreams one day. The most necessary for success in life is education, and only my school provides it to me. Without my school and the education that it gives, I would be like a confused and wandering soul, almost aimless in life.

My school helps with my educational and overall personality development. It imparts education through classes, tests, and exams to teach me how to conduct myself confidently. It just feels so great to be in my school and be a part of everyday activities, be it lectures, sports, or Something else. While in school, I always feel happy, confident, enthusiastic, and loved. I make friends at school, those whom I will never forget and will always love them. My family supports my materialistic needs, but school is the place where my actual physical, social, and mental development takes place.  I know that every question that crosses my mind will be answered by my teachers. I also know that my school friends will always be at my side whenever I need them to be. As much as the studies, my school also stresses much on These activities as the management thinks that extracurricular activities are very essential for our overall personality development. My school provides dedicated teachers and staff for each extracurricular activity. We have a big sports ground with kits for all the major sports; a covered auditorium for dance and music and a separate basketball court.

The role my school plays in my personality development is fantastic. It not only imparts education in me but also teaches me how to conduct myself and how to behave decently and properly. I get trained in all the other necessary skills of life, like how to keep calm in challenging situations and help others as well. My school teaches me to be a good and evolved human being, to stay composed and progressive always. It also teaches me to be kind and generous to others and not differentiate them based on their caste, religion, ethnicity, or other divisions. These are some of the most essential personality traits that my school imparts to me, something that I will always be thankful for. Every time I think of my school, I think of it as a temple of education. A temple, where my soul meets education, making my life more meaningful and useful to society and the nation as well. It is a place where my aspirations get a wing and I get the strength and confidence to realize them. No other place in the entire world could replace my school and the role that it plays in my life. I will always be thankful to my friends, teachers, and the staff of my school, for making it such a comfortable and Educational place of learning.

Tips for Writing an Effective Application Essay

How to Write an Effective Essay

Writing an essay for college admission gives you a chance to use your authentic voice and show your personality. It's an excellent opportunity to personalize your application beyond your academic credentials, and a well-written essay can have a positive influence come decision time.

Want to know how to draft an essay for your college application ? Here are some tips to keep in mind when writing.

Tips for Essay Writing

A typical college application essay, also known as a personal statement, is 400-600 words. Although that may seem short, writing about yourself can be challenging. It's not something you want to rush or put off at the last moment. Think of it as a critical piece of the application process. Follow these tips to write an impactful essay that can work in your favor.

1. Start Early.

Few people write well under pressure. Try to complete your first draft a few weeks before you have to turn it in. Many advisers recommend starting as early as the summer before your senior year in high school. That way, you have ample time to think about the prompt and craft the best personal statement possible.

You don't have to work on your essay every day, but you'll want to give yourself time to revise and edit. You may discover that you want to change your topic or think of a better way to frame it. Either way, the sooner you start, the better.

2. Understand the Prompt and Instructions.

Before you begin the writing process, take time to understand what the college wants from you. The worst thing you can do is skim through the instructions and submit a piece that doesn't even fit the bare minimum requirements or address the essay topic. Look at the prompt, consider the required word count, and note any unique details each school wants.

3. Create a Strong Opener.

Students seeking help for their application essays often have trouble getting things started. It's a challenging writing process. Finding the right words to start can be the hardest part.

Spending more time working on your opener is always a good idea. The opening sentence sets the stage for the rest of your piece. The introductory paragraph is what piques the interest of the reader, and it can immediately set your essay apart from the others.

4. Stay on Topic.

One of the most important things to remember is to keep to the essay topic. If you're applying to 10 or more colleges, it's easy to veer off course with so many application essays.

A common mistake many students make is trying to fit previously written essays into the mold of another college's requirements. This seems like a time-saving way to avoid writing new pieces entirely, but it often backfires. The result is usually a final piece that's generic, unfocused, or confusing. Always write a new essay for every application, no matter how long it takes.

5. Think About Your Response.

Don't try to guess what the admissions officials want to read. Your essay will be easier to write─and more exciting to read─if you’re genuinely enthusiastic about your subject. Here’s an example: If all your friends are writing application essays about covid-19, it may be a good idea to avoid that topic, unless during the pandemic you had a vivid, life-changing experience you're burning to share. Whatever topic you choose, avoid canned responses. Be creative.

6. Focus on You.

Essay prompts typically give you plenty of latitude, but panel members expect you to focus on a subject that is personal (although not overly intimate) and particular to you. Admissions counselors say the best essays help them learn something about the candidate that they would never know from reading the rest of the application.

7. Stay True to Your Voice.

Use your usual vocabulary. Avoid fancy language you wouldn't use in real life. Imagine yourself reading this essay aloud to a classroom full of people who have never met you. Keep a confident tone. Be wary of words and phrases that undercut that tone.

8. Be Specific and Factual.

Capitalize on real-life experiences. Your essay may give you the time and space to explain why a particular achievement meant so much to you. But resist the urge to exaggerate and embellish. Admissions counselors read thousands of essays each year. They can easily spot a fake.

9. Edit and Proofread.

When you finish the final draft, run it through the spell checker on your computer. Then don’t read your essay for a few days. You'll be more apt to spot typos and awkward grammar when you reread it. After that, ask a teacher, parent, or college student (preferably an English or communications major) to give it a quick read. While you're at it, double-check your word count.

Writing essays for college admission can be daunting, but it doesn't have to be. A well-crafted essay could be the deciding factor─in your favor. Keep these tips in mind, and you'll have no problem creating memorable pieces for every application.

What is the format of a college application essay?

Generally, essays for college admission follow a simple format that includes an opening paragraph, a lengthier body section, and a closing paragraph. You don't need to include a title, which will only take up extra space. Keep in mind that the exact format can vary from one college application to the next. Read the instructions and prompt for more guidance.

Most online applications will include a text box for your essay. If you're attaching it as a document, however, be sure to use a standard, 12-point font and use 1.5-spaced or double-spaced lines, unless the application specifies different font and spacing.

How do you start an essay?

The goal here is to use an attention grabber. Think of it as a way to reel the reader in and interest an admissions officer in what you have to say. There's no trick on how to start a college application essay. The best way you can approach this task is to flex your creative muscles and think outside the box.

You can start with openers such as relevant quotes, exciting anecdotes, or questions. Either way, the first sentence should be unique and intrigue the reader.

What should an essay include?

Every application essay you write should include details about yourself and past experiences. It's another opportunity to make yourself look like a fantastic applicant. Leverage your experiences. Tell a riveting story that fulfills the prompt.

What shouldn’t be included in an essay?

When writing a college application essay, it's usually best to avoid overly personal details and controversial topics. Although these topics might make for an intriguing essay, they can be tricky to express well. If you’re unsure if a topic is appropriate for your essay, check with your school counselor. An essay for college admission shouldn't include a list of achievements or academic accolades either. Your essay isn’t meant to be a rehashing of information the admissions panel can find elsewhere in your application.

How can you make your essay personal and interesting?

The best way to make your essay interesting is to write about something genuinely important to you. That could be an experience that changed your life or a valuable lesson that had an enormous impact on you. Whatever the case, speak from the heart, and be honest.

Is it OK to discuss mental health in an essay?

Mental health struggles can create challenges you must overcome during your education and could be an opportunity for you to show how you’ve handled challenges and overcome obstacles. If you’re considering writing your essay for college admission on this topic, consider talking to your school counselor or with an English teacher on how to frame the essay.

My parents were always hesitant to let me go to sleepovers. After I went to my first one, I understood why.

  • My parents didn't allow me to go to most sleepovers when I was growing up.
  • When they finally allowed me to go to one, I was excited. But that excitement was short-lived.
  • A game of truth or dare took a turn, and I couldn't wait for my mom to pick me up.

Insider Today

Growing up in a Dominican household, sleepovers had always been a hard "no." When my parents finally allowed me to go to my very first sleepover at the age of 11, I quickly realized why that was.

There were countless sleepovers I hadn't been allowed to attend, and I'd never known how to explain to my friends why I was turning down their invitations. Whenever I'd ask my parents, my mom would say, "Because that girl probably has brothers and a father living there." At the time, I had no idea why that even mattered; I always imagined sleepovers like an episode of "The Babysitters Club," full of fun adventures and friends . What was the big deal?

I was excited for my first sleepover until a game of truth or dare

I was in middle school when I finally got my chance to go to a sleepover. My mom had a friend whose daughter was my age, and she was having a birthday sleepover. Although I'd never met her before, my mom thought it would be fun and safe for me to sleep over at her friend's house .

While I was excited, I remembered my mom telling me that the possibility her brothers and father might be there was something to be nervous about. I didn't know why, but I knew it was the reason I wasn't allowed to go to sleepovers before this one. That night, there were no men in the house — but it still turned out to be a nightmare, and one I didn't even know to be afraid of.

We started off the night with just a group of eight 11-year-old girls together in a room. I felt safe. The first game we played was truth or dare. I only remember there being two truths, and the rest were outrageous dares that included things like humping a pillow. I was uncomfortable being in the same room, and I even covered my eyes or looked away. When it was my turn, the rules of the game suddenly changed.

Related stories

"Only 'dare' allowed," the birthday girl said.

I felt my heartbeat in my throat. I was nervous about what my dare would be, especially since I didn't know these girls at all. My dare was to make out with the wall while everyone watched. I was only 11 and didn't feel comfortable doing things like that in front of people I'd only just met. I refused, but when I did, I was told, "Do it or leave."

Suddenly, all the girls started screaming mean and hurtful things in my face, and a pillow was thrown at my head. One of the girls grabbed me by the shirt, opened the door, and pushed me while yelling, "Get out." I felt humiliated and embarrassed and wondered how 11-year-old girls were capable of such evil.

The parents in the house didn't believe what I told them

I went to talk to her mom and noticed the dad was also home now. I got nervous seeing him in the kitchen because of what my mom had told me but was so overwhelmed by what had just happened that I ignored the fear and just begged to have my parents pick me up. But instead of calling my parents, they asked why. I told the truth with tears in my eyes, but they didn't believe their daughter could be so mean. They thought I was just crying because I wanted to be included in the game.

They walked me back to the room, told their daughter and her friends to be nice and to let me play, and then left us unsupervised for the rest of the night. I was back alone with those girls, and they shoved me into the corner and made fun of me while I cried until they got bored and moved on. I felt betrayed by those adults.

Thinking back now, those parents probably didn't want my mom to know the truth about the bad time I was having while I was in their care. But it was torture waiting for my mom to pick me up in the morning. When she finally did, I told her how mean those girls were but left out many of the details because I felt ashamed for reasons I'm still not sure of. She told me not to worry, but it was the first and the last sleepover I'd ever go to. Now that I think of it, I never saw that friend of my mom's again after that night.

Thankfully, I also never had to see those girls again, but the scars they left on my self-esteem made me question many of my friendships throughout high school . I am so proud of the 11-year-old version of me that refused to do anything that made me uncomfortable just to be accepted, but it pisses me off that those parents ignored my cry for help.

I'm not sure whether I'll allow my future kids to attend sleepovers . It's hard to say right now since I'm not yet responsible for a child's safety, but I don't have to know yet. I may develop a safety plan with my future kids and make decisions about spending the night somewhere on a case-by-case basis, but I'm glad I have time to figure it out.
