GHOST Announces ' Phantomime' Covers EP, Shares 'Jesus He Knows Me' Music Video

Fresh off winning "Best Rock Album Of The Year" at the iHeart Radio Music Awards , GHOST has announced "Phantomime" , a five-song covers EP intended from the start to follow last year's international chart-topping opus "Impera" . A diverse and spellbinding sampling of the Grammy Award -winning band's musical DNA, "Phantomime" is comprised of covers of classics and deep cuts by TELEVISION , GENESIS , THE STRANGLERS , IRON MAIDEN and Tina Turner . "Phantomime" pays tribute in equal measure to every one of these unlikely bedfellow, influences while stamping them all with GHOST 's undeniable sonic signature.

The announcement of "Phantomime" 's impending release also solves the mystery of GHOST 's recent "Jesus Is Coming" campaign, as referenced in the Good Friday premiere of the newest installment of the band's long-running webisode series, "Chapter 17: Nap Time" . "Phantomime" 's May 18 release via Loma Vista Recordings is heralded by GHOST 's interpretation of GENESIS 's 1992 satirical stab at televangelists "Jesus He Knows Me" , available now to stream and download.

This second coming of "Jesus He Knows Me" is accompanied by an Alex Ross Perry -directed video that will surely make the case that one person's beauty is another's blasphemy. Culminating in a climactic ritual that must be seen to be believed, GHOST 's visual interpretation of "Jesus He Knows Me" rises to the occasion in unholy fashion — and then some.

"Phantomime" track listing:

01. See No Evil (TELEVISION) 02. Jesus He Knows Me (GENESIS) 03. Hanging Around (THE STRANGLERS) 04. Phantom Of The Opera (IRON MAIDEN) 05. We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome) (Tina Turner)

GHOST is no stranger to covers, having previously tackled material originally written and recorded by THE BEATLES ("Here Comes The Sun"),  ABBA ("I'm A Marionette"),  DEPECHE MODE ("Waiting For The Night"),  Roky Erickson ("If You Have Ghosts"),  METALLICA ("Enter Sandman"),  PET SHOP BOYS ("It's A Sin") and EURYTHMICS ("Missionary Man"), among others.

This past February, GHOST revealed details of its upcoming "Re-Imperatour" summer 2023 U.S. tour with special guest AMON AMARTH . Produced by Live Nation and FPC Live , the 27-date trek kicks off on Wednesday, August 2 in Concord, California at Concord Pavilion, with stops in Salt Lake City, Chicago, Cincinnati, Austin and more before wrapping up with the band's Monday, September 11 return to the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

GHOST is continuing to tour in support of its latest album, "Impera" , which sold 70,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in its first week of release to land at position No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. It marked the third top 10 album — and fifth top 40-charting set — for the Swedish act. The 12-song effort was produced by Klas Åhlund and mixed by Andy Wallace .

"Impera" landed at position No. 1 in Germany and Sweden, No. 2 in the U.K., Netherlands, Belgium and Norway, No. 3 in Australia, No. 5 in France and Ireland, and No. 20 in Italy.

GHOST leader Tobias Forge worked on the follow-up to 2018's "Prequelle" with Åhlund and Swedish co-writers Salem Al Fakir and Vincent Pontare , whose credits include Madonna and Lady Gaga .

In January, GHOST released a new version of its song "Spillways" featuring a guest appearance by DEF LEPPARD singer Joe Elliott .

"Spillways" is taken from "Impera" , which was released in March 2022.

The release of Phantomime has been preceded by this week’s release of Ghost’s faithful cover of Iron Maiden’s “Phantom of the Opera” and last month’s reveal of its interpretation of Genesis’ “Jesus He Knows Me.” Described by Revolver as “something special for your Easter basket” and by Stereogum as “a fitting release for this particular Easter Sunday,” the Instagram-trending “Jesus He Knows Me” has generated some 10 million streams worldwide and cracked the Rock Radio Top 20 within weeks of its release.

The story behind every cover version on Ghost’s new Phantomime EP

Everything you need to know about Ghost’s covers of classics by Iron Maiden, Genesis and Tina Turner

Ghost’s Tobias Forge, Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris and Tina Turner and Mel Gibson

Ghost have always had a thing for covers, as well as following up their full-length albums (since 2013’s Infestissumam at least) with release-valve EPs. They’ve previously recorded songs by rock and pop megastars like Metallica , ABBA and The Beatles, as well as more cult acts like Swedish rockers Imperiet and former 13th Floor Elevators frontman Roky Erickson.

Now they’ve released a full covers EP titled Phantomime . The likes of Genesis, Iron Maiden and Tina Turner might make for strange bedfellows but once more provide a peek into the influences that helped shape Ghost and their iconic mainman Tobias Forge. Here’s what you need to know about every song on Phantomime …

See No Evil (originally by Television)

New York’s Television are often cited as one of the bands that served as punk rock progenitors in the early to mid-70s. They certainly had a raw live presence and were instrumental in convincing Hilly Kristal, the owner of the CBGB nightclub, to let it morph into the punk haven and breeding ground it became. ‘But Ghost aren’t punk!’ we hear you cry. And neither, really, were Television. By the time they released debut album Marquee Moon in 1977, the Sex Pistols were poised to unleash anarchy in the UK, ushering in a welter of sweary and unrefined 3-chord oiks. Television, meanwhile, traded on comparative complexity, poetic vision and the wonderful melodic interplay between frontman and guitarist Tom Verlaine and fellow six-stringer Richard Lloyd.

Speaking of the writing of See No Evil, Lloyd told journalist Damian Love: “Take my part out, all you’ve got is, ‘ duh-duh-duh, duh-duh-duh, duh-duh-duh …’ The thing is, I don’t get any songwriting credit. But I was willing to give that up for the sake of the band. We had arguments about it, for a couple of years. But Tom can be very stubborn, very willful, very paranoid, and there’s just no fighting it.” Whatever the origin of the song, it served as a wonderfully addictive album opener and introduction to the band. With its wiry energy, sinuous melodies and Verlaine’s lyrical take on self-destructive urges, it fits right into the Ghost ethos.

Jesus He Knows Me (originally by Genesis)

The polished and poppy Phil Collins-led Genesis of the 1980s and beyond was a far cry from the experimental prog-rockers that had emerged in the previous decade. They still had the odd barb though and showed it on Jesus He Knows Me , which featured on their 1991 album We Can't Dance and released as a single the following year. Far from being a religious song, it skewered the then burgeoning phenomenon of televangelism during a period when many of its biggest name including Jimmy Swaggart, Robert Tilton and Jim Bakker were under scrutiny for behaviours ranging from sex scandals and having their fingers in the till. The accompanying music video Collins as an unscrupulous televangelist trying to raise $18m over a weekend because the Lord told him to. The song reached number 20 in the UK charts and number 23 in the US.

Ghost released their own NSFW video for the cover on Easter Sunday. Forge told Australia’s The Music that the song now seems relevant again in a way it didn’t when Ghost first started touring a decade or so ago. “It’s frighteningly horrible. It’s easy not to laugh about the accuracy in which Phil Collins wrote a lyric that ten years ago felt almost dated, even outdated, which now feels so contemporary and important,” he said.

Hanging Around (originally by The Stranglers)

Hanging Around by UK punks The Stranglers is another song mixing religion with tongue-in-cheek humour, which is very much up Ghost’s nave. The song rides Jean-Jacques Burnel’s pulsing bass riff and Dave Greenfield’s distinctive swathes of organ while the lyrics detail some of the characters who used to hang around the clubs the band played in. The chorus, meanwhile, features the lines: ‘ Christ he told his mother/ Christ he told her not to bother/ Cos he's alright in the city/ Cos he's high above the ground/ He's just hanging around.’

In the book The Stranglers: Song By Song , frontman Hugh Cornwell explained: “The title of the song reminded me of a joke I'd heard, which I thought was funny. What a great way to spend Easter, hanging around on a cross. It's very flippant. I find that references to God and Christ are very emotive. For a long period of time I loved hanging around churches. There's something fascinating about the power of religious belief. I'm not necessarily a very religious person, but I'm fascinated by the regalia and everything connected with it. I love using references to religion in the creative process because it's so emotive and controversial. You get people who strongly believe and equally strident non-believers."

Phantom Of The Opera (originally by Iron Maiden)

The centrepiece of Iron Maiden’s 1980 debut album , Phantom Of The Opera was the first of many Iron Maiden epics, clocking in at 7 minutes-plus and featuring a multi-tempo structure that bassist and writer Steve Harris assembled section by section. It was also the first of many Harris compositions inspired by literary and historical figures, based as it was on the 1911 novel of the same name by French author Gaston Leroux.

It could apparently have sounded quite different. Former guitarist Dennis Stratton told Rock Candy that at one point he added “a load of harmony guitars and falsetto vocals to our basic recording”. He continued: "But when we were listening back to the track [manager] Rod Smallwood came up behind me in the control room. I didn't know he was there and at the end of the song he said, 'You can get rid of all that. It sounds like fucking Queen.' So it never made the cut.”

We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome) (originally by Tina Turner)

We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome) was written by songwriting duo Graham Lyle and Terry Britten, who had previously provided US singer Tina Turner with another huge hit in What's Love Got to Do with It. It appeared in the 1985 film Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, which starred Mel Gibson as the titular Max and Turner as Aunty Entity – the ruler of a post-Apocalyptic town. The Thunderdome of the title, incidentally, was a gladiatorial arena in which combatants fought to the death.

The music featured the singer in her character’s chain mail gown, although she told Q that "Aunty Entity was not as fierce as I wanted her to be”. She continued: "I wanted her to go back into the trunk and pull out the clothes that she was wearing when she built that city, because she built herself up from nothing and she definitely wasn't wearing that chain dress and those high-heeled shoes."

Bonus trivia: the song also features a choir from King's House School in Richmond, London. One of the young choristers was future England rugby captain Lawrence Dallaglio.

The five-song EP PHANTOMIME arrives May 18th

Ghost Announce EP Featuring Genesis, Iron Maiden, and Tina Turner Covers, Unveil “Jesus He Knows Me”: Stream

Ghost have announced a new five-song covers EP titled PHANTOMIME , featuring renditions of songs by Genesis , Iron Maiden , Tina Turner , Television, and The Stranglers. Just in time for Easter Sunday (April 9th), the Swedish metal band has unveiled its cover of Genesis’ “Jesus He Knows Me.”

Genesis’ original 1992 version of the song was a satirical look at televangelists, a subject matter right up Ghost’s alley. In addition to “Jesus He Knows Me,” the EP includes Papa Emeritus IV and company covering Television’s “See No Evil,” The Stranglers’ “Hanging Around,” Iron Maiden’s “Phantom of the Opera,” and Tina Turner’s “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome).” The EP is due out on May 18th.

Accompanying the music video for “Jesus He Knows Me” is a half-hour radio call-in show titled “Jesus Talk” hosted by “Father Jim DeFroque.

Perhaps, Ghost will perform one or more of the covers on their upcoming summer North American “Re-Imperatour,” featuring support from fellow Swedish act Amon Amarth. Tickets for those shows are available here .

GHOST – Phantomime (EP Review)

pantomime ghost

Why in God’s name is this necessary? I mean, coming on the heels of “ Impera” — which I rated the top album of 2022 — “Phantomime” is a letdown.  t’s just not special.

I know, Tobias Forge has done this before, putting out covers EP’s between albums. Maybe it’s a way to keep Ghost in the public eye. Maybe Forge is just paying homage to artists/ songs that mean something to him. Maybe it’s a chance to use royalties to support a cause ( “Enter Sandman” monies went toward a Swedish camp that welcomes LGBTQ kids). Maybe some or all or none of those. But why?

The record kicks off with “See No Evil,” a great song by the Punk/New Wave band Television . The Ghost version is more sonically full than the original. But there’s little to match up to the twin Television guitar attack of Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd . An interesting choice, no question. But why?

“Jesus He Knows Me” is more of an obvious choice. The Genesis original poked fun and bile at televangelists — people who are out to gratify their wants as opposed to lifting the spirits of the faithful. Forge has been doing something similar for more than a decade, deriding organized religion and some of the pastors therein. The new version — and this may sound like a broken record — has a much fuller sound, highly produced and with a sheen that is pure Ghost . But otherwise, it’s pretty close to Phil Collins and company’s performance. Why?

I was actually thrilled to see the group cover Hanging Around by the Stranglers . If I’d interviewed Forge a couple of years ago (and I’m still available to do that, hint, hint), I would have asked him about doing that song.  It’s a natural — specially with the bad Jesus joke in the chorus:

Christ he told his mother Christ he told her not to bother Cos he’s alright in the city Cos he’s high above the ground He’s just hanging around (hanging around)

That being said, I prefer the original.  t’s sleazy and dirty (of course it is, it’s the Stranglers ). Jean-Jacques Burnel ’s bass drives the song throughout. Hugh Cornwell ’s somewhat threatening vocals really make a difference — while Forge ’s are very clean and crisp. Ghost ’s take is heavier, with a thicker production. It’s just not dangerous. Why?

Iron Maiden ’s “Phantom of the Opera” is also an obvious cover. The original is Prog-Metal, right up Ghost ’s alley. But Iron Maiden — at least on this song — has more fire and brimstone in the performance. The Ghost cover is better produced and, just like the others, has a fuller sound. The lead vocals are comparable between Paul Di’Anno and Forge ( Bruce Dickinson had not yet joined Maiden ). But they both lack the “pop” needed to do the song true justice. As always, Ghost is interesting. There is no revelation here, unfortunately. Why?

“Phantomime” Artwork

The closer is the surprise: a performance of Tina Turner ’s “We Don’t Need Another Hero.” This is the only song where the original was released during Forge ’s lifetime (and barely). The Ghost -man’s vocals are good and strong on this one — but how does one compete with the incomparable Ms. Turner ? You can’t. Honestly, Forge isn’t really trying to do so. This is his take on things. But Tina ’s version is the standard, more of a plea than a statement of fact. Ghost is demanding that there be no more heroes. I wonder — what if they’d slowed things down, echoing “Impera” ’s “ Respite on the Spital Fields,” creating something sinister and dangerous? Alas, we’ll never know. Why?

Interestingly, these songs were recorded at the same time as “Impera” — and another five were cut with the thought of doing an entire album of covers. Forge decided not to go that far, and that’s probably wise (and that means there are another set of songs ready to go). I’ve admitted it before—I came late to the Ghost banquet, but I dove into the feast with mouth wide open. “Impera” was brilliant. “Phantomime” is okay but not special, certainly not in the way that I’ve come to expect from the Swedish savant.

So I’ll go see the band on their current tour and marvel at all that they are. I’ll put  “Phantomime” in the library, in the back with stuff I rarely listen to ( “Impera” is at the front). And I’ll await the next original album by Ghost . And when it comes out, I imagine I’ll ask, “Why the hell didn’t they put this out instead of the covers EP?”

The “why” is in the part of Ghost you’re missing: THE LORE. Father Jim DeFroque might turn out to be a recurring character. There’s the reason for ‘Jesus He Knows Me’. The cover of ‘We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)’ is poignant lyrically, and important for a generation who might never have heard the song outside of Ghost/Papa bringing it to them. (It is actually a favor to this generation that they are being introduced to past music, and equally as important to the original artists to bring the attention of new generations.) As well, pay attention to the theme: post-apocalypse. Or, more appropriately, post empire. These albums are following the rise and fall of empires. ‘Thunderdome’ is certainly in theme, especially with Aunty and the empire she seeks to build — her time having come due to social destruction. And the children on the outskirts, building their Utopia. There’s a whole lot there. As with prior EP’s, it sets up the next LP in one way or another. Ever seen a stage production of ‘Phantom of the Opera’? Think of the song ‘Hanging Around’. How many people had actually seen the Phantom, the evil haunting the Opera house? Pay attention to how the tracklist is laid out.

I’ll grant you that Forge usually has a method to the madness, and that this one may have escaped me. And I’ll agree that this may be the start of the DeFroque era. But I still think the ep is jusst okay. Musically, it doesn’t do much to interpret the music in a Ghostly fashion, other than through instrumentation and vocals (unlike, say Enter Sandman). It is not as challenging or gripping as Impera, which is an amazing work. For me, this is a palate cleanser. Yes, that will prepare me for the next release, at least in some ways. But it’s not the strong addition to the Ghost canon that I’d hoped for.

I understand that songs written and performed by Tobias Forge are beyond amazing but my personal opinion is anything Tobias Forge and Ghost put out there are worthy of praise as well. I can not get enough of Tobias’s vocals and I believe anything he puts his stamp on only improves the song. Whether it be covers or originals he lends a perfection as his ear for the instrumentals as well as his vocals are beyond reproach and all i can say is that ‘He Is’.

100% disagree with you on the Phantom of the opera cover. That song is art, it elevated the original in every way. Many of the guitar lines are pure genius. Accurate assessment on the rest of the album.

GHOST artist explains cover art of new 'Phantomime' EP

ghost-phantomime-art.jpg, Jimmy Hubbard

Ghost 's cover art is consistently stunning, and that trend continues with Papa and the Ghouls' forthcoming Phantomime EP , announced on Easter, which features eye-popping artwork by Hedi Xandt. The visual artist, writer and sculptor recently pulled back the veil on the striking biomechanical reimagining of Ghost's iconic skeleton-faced pope.

"My artwork always starts with the creation of a 3-dimensional digital model, no matter if the finished piece will be a print or a physical sculpture," Xandt explained in a post on Ghost's social media. "Rendering a full-fledged digital sculpture bears the opportunity to change materials, perspectives and lights at a whim – including extras like three separate face shells that can be removed to reveal the layer beneath, changing the appearance of the Phantomime — alluding to the cover songs on the EP."

In additional posts on Xandt's own Instagram , the artist shared some work-in-progress images and further behind-the-scenes insight behind the EP cover, which was created in 2022 "over a period of 6 weeks and ... consist[s] of over 600 individual pieces," he revealed. See below.

Ghost Announce New Covers EP ‘Phantomime’ + Debut Cover of Genesis’ ‘Jesus He Knows Me’

There’s been some speculation lately regarding whether or not Ghost will release new music prior to their 2023 tour . Well, it looks like our question has finally been answered, as Ghost just announced their latest EP – Phantomime – and premiered a video for their new cover of Genesis ’ “Jesus He Knows Me” (which originally appeared on 1991's  We Can't Dance ).

Last Friday (April 7), the band released a new short (“Chapter 17”) that saw bandleader Tobias Forge (as Papa Emeritus IV ) struggling to use a juice box as he roused the threat of Papa Nihil. He then hands Papa Nihil a Ghost gold record, and the video’s caption reads: “Don't sleep on this, it will be a Good Friday.”

This, too, led fans to wonder what else Ghost are planning for 2023.

This morning (April 9), Ghost premiered a 30-minute video entitled “ Jesus Talk with Father Jim DeFroque .” Following a brief introduction (during which DeFroque welcomes viewers prior to talking about “the language” that everyone loves, music), he makes jokes about gothic music. Afterward, he humorously analyses the “blasphemous” lyrics of a few songs, including “ Jesus Built My Hotrod ” by Ministry and “ Personal Jesus ” by Depeche Mode , before ending with a positive assessment of the Genesis song.

(Along the way, DeFroque also speaks with a few call-in listeners about his take on Jesus and the music he played, as well as gives out this phone number for donations: 1-866-HOLY-HITS.)

Once the episode ended, Ghost started a countdown for the video premiere. As you can see below, the clip begins with DeFroque addressing a group of churchgoers and collecting donations. He then gets in his car and puts on the “Holy Hits” tape as he drives down the road. The rest of the video sees him rocking out to Ghost’s characteristic take on “Jesus He Knows Me” as he commits various transgressions.

Ghost’s Tobias Forge talks new covers EP ‘Phantomime’: “It casts a glimpse as to where I want to go”

As the band share a cover of Genesis' ‘Jesus He Knows Me’ from the 'Phantomime' covers EP, Forge tells NME what's next, the future of Papa Emeritus IV, and why now wasn't the time for a piano-led Motörhead cover

Tobias Forge of Ghost

Ghost have shared a cover of Genesis ‘ ‘Jesus He Knows Me’, announced a covers EP and spoken to  NME about new music, the future, and being inspired by personality politicians like Trump.

Following the release of their rendition of Genesis’ 1992 hit ‘Jesus He Knows Me’ over Easter, yesterday (Sunday, April 9) the band followed up with the news of a new five-track EP, ‘Phantomime’ – featuring more re-imagined songs from Iron Maiden , Tina Turner , Television, and The Stranglers .

As frontman Tobias Forge told NME , ‘Phantomime’ could “cast a glimpse as to where I want to go with the band now”.

“That doesn’t mean that all of a sudden we’re going to sound like Television!” he said. “It just means that there are practical things in there that have inspired me to record this EP in a slightly different way than I have done previously.”

Speaking about his decision to put ‘Jesus He Knows Me’ as the lead single for ‘Phantomime’, Forge believed the “song is more relevant today than it probably was in 1992”. He also flagged a shift in politics and culture in the West that seemingly seeks to wind the clock back to “Mediaeval times” as influencing his creative choices on the EP.

“A few years ago, maybe 10 years ago, it almost felt like this song – these other songs too – were a little bit dated lyrically,” he said of the cover. “That’s because they were! You know, this band – these guys in Genesis – were singing about early ’90s ladies; about televangelists!”

“All that stuff, it felt dated a few years ago. Whereas now, everything that we’re singing about on this song, everything that this song is about is actually right back up beside what I’m writing about in my own material.”

He added: “What I’m writing about is a completely contemporary commentary on basically a movement within the free Western world who wants to flatten the Earth. This movement wants to regress the world, and just completely turn the clock back to Mediaeval times. I don’t know what that’s about, it’s just stupidity!”

'Phantomime' by Ghost

Forge summed up his train of thought, saying: “It also felt like this is actually a very important song to put out. I think that Phil [Collins , frontman], who I’m assuming wrote the lyrics, was (and still is) hitting the head of the nail pretty hard.”

That said, the Swedish metaller admitted that the song also piqued his creative side. “I’ve always loved that song and I’ve always found it a little bit paradoxical,” he told NME . “That it always had an element in it that was unexplored – unexploited.

“I’ve always heard in my head that this song has an explosive twin. You know, that you can play it basically like the original, but with a little bit more muscle and, all of a sudden, it’s going to be almost like a Metallica song from their ‘Garage Days’. It’s very punky and has a lot of meat in it.”

This isn’t the first time that Forge and Ghost have released a collection of covers – another five-track EP ‘Popestar’ was released in the wake of 2015’s ‘Meliora’. Though he said this EP is a very different beast to that, teasing that ‘Phantomime’ was originally intended as a full-length album meant to mirror 2022 album ‘Impera’ with some tantalisingly different covers on it. However, the EP ended up becoming something very different because of the toll the last record took on him.

“‘Popestar’ could have easily been part of the ‘Meliora’ session, but it wasn’t,” Forge explained. “So, that was a great way to reset. To just do something completely different and I’d say the same thing happened with ‘Impera’.”

Tobias Forge

He continued: “After coming off the production of ‘Impera’, which was a long procedure. I mean I was writing and doing demos and all that, and me and Klas Åhlund [producer] were working probably four, five months straight on it. Like both of us together and in studios doing that. Both of us are very meticulous. Both of us are very frantic when it comes to work. And, after a long production like that, you’re toast. Basically, you’re fried!”

It was around this time – when he felt “fried” – that Forge started working on other material which would become ‘Phantomime’. “During the demoing of ‘Impera’ I kept working on demos for what I just referred to as the ‘cover album’,” he revealed. “Originally, the idea was to have 10 songs on this covers record, because I wanted to make a complete record and that LP was going to basically mirror ‘Impera’ somehow.

He continued: “Originally the selection was a little bit more eclectic. Look, I’m not going into great detail about them, because we might use some of them at a later point. But, it was basically like a piano version of a Motörhead song.

“There was [also] a Misfits song that was really cool and a U2 track. We recorded it all. In fact, we did a really finished demo of Rush ’s ‘Distant Early Warning’, and then after ‘Impera’ I was just like, ‘I want to do a rock EP. A pure rock EP!’”

Indeed, Forge said the ‘Impera’ fatigue is where ‘Phantomime’ was conceived, explaining: “I thought I’ll sort of take away some of the more experimental stuff, and just focus on the rock songs – the ones that are energetic. The ones that don’t go into any excursions, as in not a piano-led Motörhead track!

“There were even instrumental covers; like proper instrumentals! But, I just wanted to basically make a new recording that was as opposed to ‘Impera’ as could be – quick and fairly simple.”

Forge admitted that the songs come from an eclectic array of artists, but these songs which feature on ‘Phantomime’ are in-tune with the very essence of what Ghost’s DNA is made from. “This is what Ghost is about,” he said. “We got the question very early on in our career about Satanism and whether or not the lyrics of our songs were about God.

“Our lyrics have nothing to do with God, Gods, or anything like that, it’s all about man. It’s about mankind. The concept of rulers and followers; people submitting to other people who want to subject them to heinous things in exchange for money, basically.”

Forge is a self-admitted “worshipper” of American pop culture. And, it seems the ever-present divisive spectre of former President Trump and personality politics which continue to rage in America are looming large in his mind. These are all things that have helped to influence the creation of the EP.

“There’s this almost outspoken like mantra of, ‘Let’s be stupid!’ Because that’s so much more fucking comfortable,” he said. “You know [it’s like], ‘let’s just be ignorant!’ And, what actually ends up happening is that because we seem to collectively just decide this, everybody follows it,” he replied when asked about the references to the corruption of the ‘American dream’ in his lyrics.

Ghost

He added: “The Western world is going through a very similar time everywhere, It’s just that we don’t really have a Trump anywhere else but America. We don’t have a GOP. We don’t have a Marjorie Taylor Greene. But, there are a lot of the things that are happening in America actually happening all over Europe.”

As for what the future holds for Ghost following ‘Phantomime’ and their upcoming summer tour dates, Forge hinted that fans’ speculation about Papa Emeritus IV’s role as the figurehead of Ghost coming to an end may just be correct .

“Well, I mean, everything always changes. Nothing ever lasts forever,” he said when asked about the current Papa’s future. “I think that is an unavoidable fact. I and everyone else deal with this [fact] all the time, this fluidity of being amid the ever moving process of time and how things naturally sort of wither and fade away or fall apart.”

Ominously, he added: “Everything has its circuit, and things will always come to pass. We just need to deal with them, right? Does that mean that it ends? No. It means that there’s just a new face to it.”

The complete tracklist for ‘Phantomime’ is:

‘See No Evil’ (Television) ‘Jesus He Knows Me’ (Genesis) ‘Hanging Around’ (The Stranglers) ‘Phantom of the Opera’ (Iron Maiden) ‘We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)’ (Tina Turner)

‘Phatomime’ will be released on physical and across streaming services from May 18.

Recently, Ghost teamed up with Def Leppard on the collaborative ‘Spillways ‘.

Later this year,  Ghost are set to head out on a mammoth US headline tour  after a high-profile slot at Download festival.

Tobias Forge of Ghost performing at Manchester Arena.

Ghost review – rock’n’roll pyro pantomime is hellishly good fun

AO Arena, Manchester Tobias Forge’s band of ghouls just reached No 2 in the UK charts, and their symphonic metal – complete with bat wings, confetti and flamethrowers – has universal appeal

I t’s some feat bringing corpse paint to the mainstream, but Ghost have done it: the Swedes arrive for the opening night of their first UK tour in three years having seen their new album Impera reach No 2 in the charts last month.

The band’s identities were once totally secret, and although the rest remain anonymous – referred to as Nameless Ghouls, and wearing headgear that’s part steampunk, part Tom Hardy’s Bane – Ghost are a less mysterious proposition now that the theatrical Tobias Forge is known as their frontman. Not that this has had any impact on their symphonic, pop-savvy metal. What started as a doomy occult band has morphed into a blockbusting arena act, like a spooky Def Leppard without the flowing locks.

We’re two songs in and the prescient Rats already has a packed arena in raptures. Released pre-pandemic, Forge sings: “In times of turmoil, in times like these / Beliefs contagious, spreading disease.” Remove the driving guitar chugs from Spillways and in another lifetime it could be an Abba staple, such is its outrageously catchy chorus – that plinking piano opening surely a tribute to Mamma Mia from their fellow Swedes.

“Do you like a lot of oomph?” Forge enquires, before the band launch into Mummy Dust. Its zany keytar solo isn’t fooling anyone: with hulking, Metallica-esque riffs, this is Ghost’s heaviest song. On the moody Cirice, Forge slinks across the stage wearing bat wings, before funereal stomper Square Hammer inspires the most frenzied singalong of the night.

There are confetti cannon, costume changes, flamethrowers and other forms of pyro, but the band is self-aware, preventing proceedings from ever getting too cartoonish. As one of the three guitarists relishes a solo spot on From the Pinnacle to the Pit a little much for his liking, Forge playfully reprimands them with a wagging finger; this is pantomime as much as rock’n’roll.

Ghost have often delved into history for thematic fare – 2018’s Prequelle drew on the Black Death, Impera from Victorian empires – but they’ve always seemed one step ahead during their sensational, transatlantic rise. Forge has said that he’s already decided the title of Ghost’s next album; one only hopes that he’s not forgetting to take all of this in, because his band have something magnificent to offer in the present.

An exhilarating cover of Genesis' 1991 single Jesus He Knows Me, a takedown of US televangelists, falls so neatly into the Ghost ouvre you'd think Tobias wrote it himself with a gleeful cackle and eye to building his ever-expanding Ghost universe (it's not hard to imagine it sitting alongside Kaisarion in Ghost live shows).

  14. GHOST

The Ghost cover is better produced and, just like the others, has a fuller sound. The lead vocals are comparable between Paul Di'Anno and Forge ( Bruce Dickinson had not yet joined Maiden ). But they both lack the "pop" needed to do the song true justice. As always, Ghost is interesting.
