Ghostbusters: 10 best characters in the original movie, ranked.

Everyone loves the iconic Ghostbusters team, but there were many great characters that helped turn the 1984 original movie into a beloved classic.

Despite the title being Ghostbusters , the original 1984 film was not really about capturing the ghosts. The capturing of Slimer is definitely a big event, but the rest of the ghostbusting is done in the form of a montage. Instead, most of the movie is spent on the characters and the humor they bring to the supernatural comedy.

This is why Ghostbusters is so beloved: without the iconic characters it brings to the table, it would not have worked. But which characters were the best in the original movie?

Gozer The Gozerian

The main threat causing the uprise in supernatural activity in New York City, Gozer is a Sumerian deity who can only enter Earth via two creatures known as the Terror Dogs. Unfortunately, Gozer does not get a lot of screentime nor really have anything to do in the final battle with the Ghostbusters.

Of course, Gozer does have the famous line, "Are you a god?" However, it quickly vanishes and takes the form of the silly yet famous Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. This is something that Ghostbusters: Afterlife changes by having Gozer, in their normal form, as the main threat of the whole climax.

Louis Tully

Rick Moranis' Louis Tully has become a famous character in the franchise. That said, the more likable aspects of Tully that most fans think of tend to stem from the sequel. In the first Ghostbusters , Louis is not nearly as charming and is even a bit creepy.

Louis is constantly stalking Dana in the hall of their apartment building, waiting to just spring out and attempt to woo her, but to no avail. When he throws a party, he fully admits that none of them are his friends, but just clients. That said, Louis is still funny in his own way and features in  some of  Ghostbusters' funniest scenes .

Mayor Lenny Klotch

Unlike a lot of movie mayors, Lenny Klotch is quite reasonable. Obviously, he doesn't quite believe in a ghost invasion, and like most logical people, he wonders if the Ghostbusters are either behind what's happening or are frauds.

However, not only does he listen to Walter Peck, but he also allows the Ghostbusters to defend their case. Mayor Klotch is a sensible man who genuinely cares about the city; he gives the Ghostbusters a chance to save it, even if Venkman had to convince him with the idea of good publicity.

Walter Peck

There is no doubt that Walter Peck is an antagonistic jerk who is rude to the Ghostbusters from the start. Though his intentions might have been good (trying to protect the environment), he seems against the Ghostbusters before he meets them. At the same time, William Atherton owns this role.

RELATED:  10 Ways Ghostbusters The Video Game Is A Great Sequel To The Movies

As much as the audience wants to see someone like Venkman or Egon punch Walter Peck in the face, there is a slimy charm to the character that makes audiences love to hate him. Plus, it's ultimately satisfying when he gets his just desserts by getting coated in melted marshmallows.

Winston Zeddemore

All four of the Ghostbusters are iconic characters of cinema history and they are all great. That being said, Winston suffers from being added to the plot more than halfway through as the new recruit. Considering he doesn't have much connection to the main story, he gets the least amount of screen time.

But when Winston Zeddemore is on screen, Ernie Hudson brings his famous charm and portrays him as a man who not only loves New York City but genuinely loves the new job as a paranormal exterminator. Winston also has his share of iconic lines including, "That's a big twinkie."

Janine Melnitz

From her snarky attitude to her stereotypical but hilarious New York accent, Janine Melnitz is the loyal secretary to the Ghostbusters. She mans the front desk and takes calls for them in both films, giving the Ghostbusters their cases. Janine is simply a cute character who is as valued by fans as a member of the Ghostbusters team themselves.

She clearly doesn't enjoy the job, at first. In fact, she's more interested in flirting with Egon, who clearly does not have much interest in romance. Still, Janine remains loyal to them, even if she throws out the occasional mean comment and it's always a thrill when she gets their first case and yells, "We got one!"

Egon Spengler

If Peter Venkman is the Captain Kirk of the group, Egon Spengler is Spock. Egon is very calculated, overly serious, and views things in a more logical way. Of all of the Ghostbusters, he is the most genuine scientist who is also the genius behind their famous gadgets, including the PKE meter, the trap, and the Proton Packs.

Played by the franchise's co-creator, the late Harold Ramis, Egon Spengler has gone on to become a fan-favorite thanks to his dry humor and unfaltering intelligence. Egon Spengler has plenty of famous quotes and this character would get honored in Ghostbusters: Afterlife .

Portrayed by  Ghostbusters co-creator, Dan Aykroyd , Ray Stantz is the heart of the Ghostbusters. He's never willing to give up, and from the moment he is introduced, Ray is shown to be an avid believer of the supernatural. It's because of Ray that the Ghostbusters are formed in the first place: he and Egon create the ghost trapping system.

Ray sells his family home in order to start up the Ghostbusters business, his love for the firehouse is what makes them buy it, and he's eager for the job. This made him the perfect mentor for Winston, plus his overly eager personality leads to many comedic moments, especially in the climax against Gozer.

Dana Barrett

Dana is the Ghostbusters' first official client who seeks help with the strange paranormal entity haunting her apartment. Played by Sigourney Weaver in one of her more badass roles , Dana is a charming character who easily sees through Peter Venkman's methods of seduction, but she also finds him intriguing.

Compared to Ripley from the Alien universe, the characters are nothing alike. Dana Barrett is much kinder and down to Earth, which carries over into the sequel. Though technically a different character, Sigourney Weaver also delivers a funny yet ominous performance when Dana becomes the demon Zuul.

Peter Venkman

There is no doubt that Bill Murray quickly became the star and face of the team. For most fans, the first Ghostbuster they think of is Dr. Peter Venkman, the laid-back con-artist of the team who saw the money-making opportunity in the company more than anything.

It's clear that Venkman doesn't take the job too seriously and didn't even believe in ghosts until they came face to face with the librarian ghost. Even then, it wasn't until after he is slimed by Slimer that Venkman started putting effort into being a Ghostbuster and he is willing to sacrifice himself to save New York City. Venkman does have a heroic side that usually comes with a few sarcastic remarks.

Female-Led Ghostbusters Team Returning For ‘Afterlife’ Sequel

in Movies & TV

Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones) screaming in Ghostbusters: Answer the Call

A certain female-led Ghostbusters team will return in the Afterlife sequel…

Fans of the Ghostbusters franchise have many reasons to be excited lately. Not only is there a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) in the works , last year, asymmetrical multiplayer game Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed (2021) hit the shelves.

And there’s plenty more on the horizon too, including a brand-new comic book series, a virtual reality game Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord (2023), a Ghostbusters animated series , and a Ghostbusters animated Netflix movie .

But before we get too ahead of ourselves, let’s shift our focus back to the awesome video game Spirits Unleashed , which sees actors Ernie Hudson and Dan Aykroyd reprise their roles as Ghostbusters Winston Zeddemore and Ray Stantz.

The game, which acts as a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife , as it picks up where the film left off, allows players to join a team of Ghostbusters or play as one of the ghosts. As the former, though, you can customize your own Ghostbuster, explore the iconic firehouse, and use an array of ghostbusting equipment from the PKE Meter to the Trap.

Extreme Ghostbusters line-up

Since its release, the game has already welcomed some DLCs (downloadable content), and now, it’s set to receive another one in the form of Extreme Ghostbusters (1997). The cartoon series may not have been a huge hit on its release in the late ’90s , but it has since amassed a pretty big following within the Ghostbusters fandom.

Exactly what this DLC will look like in its entirety remains to be seen, however, developers Illfonic have teased fans with a first look at the upcoming DLC via the Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed social media accounts, in the form of a PKE Meter based on the design from the cult animated series, with a caption that reads, “Are you ready to get Extreme?”

And, as the game already features a DLC that allows players to create characters from the original animated series The Real Ghostbusters (1986), it’s only reasonable to expect the same from the upcoming DLC, which would feature the characters Eduardo Rivera (Rino Romano), Roland Jackson (Alfonso Ribeiro), Garrett Miller (Jason Marsden), and the female leader Kylie Griffin ( Tara Strong ).

There’s no release date as yet, but it’s great to know that Extreme Ghostbusters , which, in our opinion, is an extremely underrated addition to the franchise, is finally getting the attention it deserves!

As per Wikipedia , here’s the synopsis for Extreme Ghostbusters :

Set years after the end of The Real Ghostbusters, lack of supernatural activity has put the Ghostbusters out of business. Each member has gone their separate ways save for Dr. Egon Spengler, who still lives in the firehouse to monitor the containment unit, take care of Slimer, further his studies, and teach a class on the paranormal at a local college. When ghosts start to reappear, Egon is forced to recruit his four students as the new Ghostbusters: Kylie Griffin, a goth genius and expert on occultism; Eduardo Rivera, a cynical Latino slacker; Garrett Miller, a young white paraplegic athlete who uses a wheelchair; and Roland Jackson, a studious African-American machinery whiz. Filling out the cast are Janine Melnitz, the Ghostbusters’ previous secretary who returns to the job, and Slimer, a hungry ghost. The series follows the adventures of this “Next Generation” of Ghostbusters tracking down and capturing ghosts all over New York and occasionally beyond the city. The series is styled as a supernatural comedy, following the trend set by its predecessor but with an updated and darker feel. This is reflected by the use of a gritty, rock/punk-inspired variation of Ray Parker Jr.’s song “Ghostbusters” as the opening theme, written by Jim Latham and performed by voice actor Jim Cummings. Recurring themes throughout the series are the new team learning to work together despite their differences, Janine’s largely unrequited affection for Egon, the unresolved love-hate relationship between Kylie and Eduardo, and the Ghostbusters’ frequent clashes with authority figures who disbelieve their work.

A waiter named Jimmy was tied down to a surgery table. He heard a cart coming towards him. Three monsters approached Jimmy. They regarded him as a blank canvas full of aesthetic infinite possibility. Jimmy pleaded with them to let him go. They ignored his cries and began their procedure.

In the rec room of the Firehouse, Slimer and Eduardo watched television. Kylie and Roland were reading. The "Reader Friendly" spotlight came up on the news. It featured the famous horror novel author, J.N. Kline. Kylie didn't care for Kline and stated he gave demonology a bad reputation. Eduardo quickly hid his copy of Kline's Gore Series book. Kylie went on to say his books had no basis in reality. Garrett came down the elevator asking if there were any calls. Eduardo sarcastically informed him no calls. Garrett corrected himself and asked if anyone called for him specifically. Hair Raising Tales in particular. Eduardo was surprised to hear Garrett mention a horror magazine, the same one that gave Stephen King and J.N. Kline their starts. Garrett sent the magazine a manuscript he wrote. Everyone was surprised to learn of Garrett's literary ambitions. Garrett corrected them, he had celebrity ambitions. He wanted to get on Letterman like Kline did. Slimer turned up the volume and the report when on to reveal Kline hasn't be seen or heard in months. Some have speculated he retired or went into seclusion to write is next Gore book. Eduardo chimed in he could be dead.

Egon informed the team there was a call, a code seven abduction by bipedal interdimensional corporeals in triplicate. As the team drove, they finally asked if they were in Garrett's script. Kylie confirmed they were but Eduardo revealed after a page, they died except for the "handsome one in the wheelchair." Garrett defended it as a commercial choice and promised to bring them back as ghosts in the sequel. The Extreme Ghostbusters questioned a distraught cook. He witnessed Jimmy's kidnapping without being noticed by the three monsters. The cook described one of the kidnappers as having a saw for a head. Eduardo realized the description matched Crainiac from Kline's books. Everyone else was more surprised Eduardo read kids books. Kylie scolded Eduardo for making the reference in front of the client. The cook pleaded with them to find, Jimmy - he was an innocent soul.

Elsewhere, at Tuck's Inn Bed and Breakfast, a maid fixed up a room. She turned and bumped into someone. It was Jimmy, except he now looked like his captors. They weren't far behind and implored the maid to join them. At the diner, Garrett buttered up Eduardo then asked what he thought of the manuscript. Eduardo hesitated then told Garrett it stunk bad. Outside at Ecto, Roland performed a P.K.E. sweep with a pair of Ecto Goggles but he got nothing. Egon hailed Kylie on her radio and stated there was another call, about half a mile up the road. Eduardo went on to say the 40 pages had no jeopardy to hook a reader - just of Garrett blowing away ghosts and chasing women. Kylie summoned the boys. As they came to an intersection, they noticed J.N. Kline's mansion in the distance. Once they arrived at Tuck's Inn, they ran into a frightened maid. Before she could speak, they correctly guessed guy with a saw for a head. The Extreme Ghostbusters headed inside and saw a bunch of patrons tied up. Jimmy swiped at Kylie. Once they realized the monsters was Jimmy, Eduardo recognized it as an M.O. from Kline's books.

Crainiac came down the steps and asked who knew his name. Eduardo was right all along and Kylie admitted her mistake in not believing him. Garrett opened fire on Crainiac and he blew up. Roland quickly asserted that wasn't supposed to happen. He was right and Crainiac regenerated. Eduardo spotted Corpuscle and Gristle. Gristle lunged at Roland while Kylie tried to reason with Jimmy. Jimmy held up a beaker and poured its contents out. Jimmy and the patrons vanished. Corpuscle grabbed Eduardo but Garrett tossed a hot tea kettle at it. Corpuscle grabbed it and scalded the eyes on his palms. Kylie realized they weren't ectoplasmic entities and couldn't be trapped. Crainiac stated if it was not written, it couldn't be done. They dropped a vial and vanished. Roland jumped into the smoke and vanished, too. The others briefly heard Roland on the radio then nothing.

At Ecto-1, Eduardo speculated Crainiac, Corpuscle and Gristle could have always been around and Kline just wrote about them. Kylie leafed through Spengler's Spirit Guide and deduced they were Vathek, spectral forms who enter the realm of the living through the act of writing. If Kline wrote they were indestructible, then they were. Garrett gloated at the publicity he could get if Kline were behind it all. They soon arrived at Kline's mansion and Garrett's P.K.E. Meter lit up. As the trio explored the vast mansion, they narrowly avoided one of the inn victims, now looking like a monster. Kylie stopped Eduardo from shooting since there was no way knowing what might happen to the victim. In another part of the mansion, the maid was the latest person "re-imagined" by the Vathek. Roland was next. Kylie, Eduardo, and Garrett heard typing and followed the noise to a study. J.N. Kline was restrained to a desk and typed up a script with a typewriter. Kylie ripped a portion off and read it. The Vathek sensed it. Kline managed to tip them off, the Vathek were below the mansion. Garrett ordered Kline to write out the Vathek but Kline admitted the voices were too strong. Kylie and Eduardo raced off while Garrett tried to rewrite the script himself. Crainiac's tool was replaced with an egg.

The Vathek departed the surgery room. They stumbled into the study with rabid monkeys armed with tire irons on top of them. They surrounded Kline in a circle of fire. Garrett tried to call out to Kline in vain. Kylie and Garrett freed Roland but were captured by the Vathek's victims. Crainiac implored Kline to write the demise of the Ghostbusters. Kline objected and reiterated hurting people wasn't part of the deal he made with them. They countered it was until he made them real. Crainiac added Kline gained from their alliance - wealth, fame, and success. If Kline finished the script, the Vathek would live forever. The victims brought in the other Ghostbusters. Kylie implored Garrett to destroy the text. Crainiac declared he and his parters would change the face of humanity. Eduardo ran away from Corpuscle and ascended the ladder. Garrett also got loose and rolled over a kneeling victim like it was a ramp. He landed and froze, unable to figure out how to rewrite the script. Eduardo shot the typewriter. The circle of fire formed into a vortex and sucked up the Vathek. The victims returned to normal and Kline was freed.

Back at the Firehouse, Garrett slammed down another rejection notice. He was fuming Kline published another book at his expense. Kylie and Eduardo approved of the new book. Roland added his little brother liked it, too. Garrett countered they only liked it because they were all in it. Kylie agreed, they were also alive. Garrett was in it, too. He was the "loudmouthed guy in the wheelchair." Eduardo joked if twas written, it must be true.

  • The final draft was done in December 1996. [2]
  • The epilogue was scripted to take place a month later. [3]
  • During scripting, Kline's initials were "H.P." - a nod to H.P. Lovecraft. He was also said to be in his mid-30's. [4]
  • Jimmy was noted to be a "Jimmy Olsen-type" - after Daily Planet photographer and Superman's pal. [5]
  • Kline Mansion was scripted to be located in the Connecticut countryside. [6]
  • J.N. Kline is a pastiche of writer R.L. Stine, who achieved fame in the mid-1990s for his Goosebumps series, a line of horror-themed books aimed at children. Goosebumps was spun off into a TV series as well as a line of reader-controlled Give Yourself Goosebumps books.
  • The designs were done with " Hellraiser " in mind. [7]
  • The Vathek designs originated from Everett Peck . A combination of his ideas were used as a springboard that evolved into the final designs. [8] [9]
  • Vathek is a reference to the Gothic novel Vathek.
  • The reporter and Garrett mentions horror writer Stephen King. [10] [11]
  • Kylie calls Garrett "Hemingway," a reference to the Lost Generation writer, Ernest Hemingway. [12]
  • Garrett mentions TV host David Letterman. [13]
  • Eduardo uses his famous line, "Maybe he's dead" in relation to J.N. Kline's mysterious seclusion and finding Roland. [14] [15]
  • While listening to Jimmy's boss at the diner, Garrett replies to his description of a saw with Black & Decker, a famous power tool brand. [16]
  • Before the events of the episode, Eduardo was the only Extreme Ghostbuster who read a J.N. Kline book. [17]
  • Roland mentions his younger brother reads Kline's books. [18] His young brother later appears in " Grundelesque "
  • Kylie interrupts Eduardo and Garrett, calling them "Iron Johns." [19] "Iron John" was the name of a Brothers Grimm tale about coming into adulthood
  • Gristle is able to speak well despite the fact that his lips are sewn together.
  • Garrett's failed writing career is referenced in his bio in Ghostbusters 35th Anniversary: Extreme Ghostbusters .

They make national press as the media reports the Ghostbusters are the cause of it all. Thrown in jail by the EPA, the mayor takes a chance and calls on them to help save the city. • After being kicked out of their university, parapsychology professors Spengler, Stantz and Venkman decide to go into business for themselves by trapping and removing ghosts from haunted houses. After some initial skepticism, business is soon booming as The Ghost Busters rid New York of its undead. When a downtown skyscraper becomes the focal point of spirit activity linked to the ancient god Gozer, however, the problem may be more than the team can handle. — Jean-Marc Rocher <[email protected]>
  • The film opens within the New York Public Library, where a librarian ( Alice Drummond ) is first gathering books, before heading downstairs to a remote and empty section. She places a book back on the shelf, not noticing that the books behind her are levitating across the aisle. Later, she passes the card catalogue shelves as they open behind her and suddenly begin to hurl their contents into the air. Frightened and screaming, she runs through the room before being stopped by an unseen ghost, which scares her terribly. This leads into the title card. After the opening title shot, the film continues in the Paranormal Studies Dept. of Columbia University, where Dr. Peter Venkman ( Bill Murray ) is conducting a test on ESP with a nerdy male student ( Steven Tash ) and an attractive female student ( Jennifer Runyon ). Venkman continually flirts and lies about her abilities, while enjoying administering electric shocks to the male student. Having finally had enough, the male student departs, and Venkman continues to flirt with the young woman. Dr. Ray Stantz ( Dan Aykroyd ) enters, and frantically begins to tell Venkman about the sighting at the library, insisting they leave at once to check it out. Venkman makes a date with the student, and follows Stantz out. Upon arriving at the library, Venkman and Stantz meet up with Dr. Egon Spengler ( Harold Ramis ), and Venkman proceeds to ask a series of personal (and cynical) questions about her medical and social history, before the three head down to the area the ghost supposedly inhabits. While down there, the three men collect ectoplasmic residue, discover a tall "symmetrical stacking" of books from floor to ceiling, and narrowly escape a falling bookcase. Turning the same corner as the librarian, they see the ghost: a transparent form of an elderly lady ( Ruth Oliver ), reading a book. Having no idea what to do, Venkman begins to talk to the ghost as if it were a lady in a bar. She shushes him, before Stantz proclaims he knows what to do. They stealthily approach the ghost, before Ray yells, "Get her!" and the ghost mutates to a ghoulish, skeletal apparition, scaring the hell out of the trio, who run screaming from the library. They ignore the library administrator ( John Rothman ) in their frantic way out. After they've calmed down a bit, they walk back to the university. Venkman mocks Ray's idiotic plan, and Egon announces that based on his readings, they now have a "good change of actually catching a ghost and holding it indefinitely." However, once they get back to the school, they meet the dean ( Jordan Charney ) who tells them that their grant has been terminated due to their shoddy and highly suspect findings, research, and methods. Peter and Ray sit drinking on campus, and Ray mopes about their bleak prospects, before Peter suggests this turn of events happened so that they could go into business for themselves, as the world's first firm for paranormal investigations and eliminations. Peter convinces Ray to take out a mortgage on his childhood home, and use it for startup capital. The trio checks out an empty firehouse to use as a headquarters, and while Egon enumerates the many problems with the building itself, Ray is beside himself with excitement at the prospect of living and working there, specially with the fire-fighter pall in the middle of the hall. At 55 Central Park West, classical musician Dana Barrett ( Sigourney Weaver ) arrives home with groceries. Her neighbor, übernerd and accountant Louis Tully ( Rick Moranis ), stops her in the hall, telling her that her television had been left on. Louis badgers her about an upcoming party he's hosting, and Dana finally brushes him away and enters her apartment. As she is putting away her groceries, she notices that her eggs are now leaping out of their shells and cooking themselves on her countertop. She then hears a growl coming from her refrigerator, opens it, and sees an otherworldly temple, and a doglike creature that growls the word "Zuul" (voiced by Ivan Reitman ), before Dana frantically slams the door shut. Back at the newly christened Ghostbusters headquarters, Ray pulls up, shocking Peter with the new business car, an old beat-up ambulance that needs a lot of work. Peter goes back inside, makes small talk with their new secretary, Janine ( Annie Potts ), and waits around for business. Dana arrives seeking an explanation for the events in her kitchen. Peter flirts vigorously with her, while Egon and Ray examine her briefly, and speculate as to what may be the cause of her encounter. After deciding on a plan of action, Peter insists on going with Dana back to her apartment, where he haphazardly looks around, but mostly flirts with her. He looks in the kitchen, and sees the eggs on the counter, but nothing else out of the ordinary. Dana is annoyed, but Peter continues to beg her for a date, pledging to solve her problems in an effort to impress her. Later, the Ghostbusters sit around enjoying dinner celebrating getting their first customer, but Ray has to let them know that the meal has just used the last of the business' petty cash. Fortunately, even as the business' failure is staring them in the face, Janine finally gets an urgent call about a ghost that needs removal immediately. Peter, Ray, and Egon quickly dress, and race out of their headquarters, to the Sedgwick Hotel, where the manager ( Michael Ensign ) informs them of a ghost on the 12th floor. They've always had problems, he tells them, but lately it's gotten out of hand. The Ghostbusters assure him they'll take care of it, and head up to the 12th floor. Egon and Ray worry about their equipment, which Peter describes as an unlicensed nuclear accelerator, and decide that they'll ignore the danger for now. They make chitchat conversation with a guest ( Murray Rubin ) outside the elevator, and they tell him they are going to kill a cockroach, to which the guest answers, "That's gotta be some cockroach." He takes the next elevator. Almost immediately after the Ghostbusters exit the elevator, a maid startles them, and they nearly kill her with their proton packs. The three split up, and Ray eventually sees the ghost: a rotund, green blob, eating everything on a room service cart. Ray tries to hit it with his proton pack but misses, and it flies away, frightened. Ray calls Peter on his walkie-talkie, and Peter, who is now face-to-face with the ghost, is suddenly attacked by it. Ray runs to Peter, and finds him on his back, covered in green slime, but otherwise OK. Egon calls them and informs the other two that the ghost went into the hotel's ballroom. They calm the hotel manager, and then set to work on containing the little green ghost. While shooting their weapons all over the room, Egon suddenly warns the others not to cross their streams, because to do so would result in the destruction of "all life as you know it." After destroying much of the ballroom with their seriously unstable proton packs, the Ghostbusters finally trap the ghost, and burst triumphantly from the ballroom, before the anxious manager and a host of guests burst in. The Ghostbusters haggle with the manager over the $5000 bill for a moment, and then head back home, victorious. This successful hunt proves to be but the first of a sudden rash of hauntings mean brisk business for the Ghostbusters. There is a montage of a series of missions, news spots, newspaper clippings, and stories about the Ghostbusters' new fame and success. There are even interviewed by Larry King and Joe Franklin (themselves). Peter briefly meets with Dana after her orchestra practice, and flirts a bit with her before telling her about Zuul, whom he has discovered is associated with an ancient Sumerian god of destruction, Gozer. He tells her that he'll go over it in more detail over dinner, and finally, she agrees to a date. The Ghostbusters soon hire a fourth man, Winston Zeddemore ( Ernie Hudson ), a black, blue-collar type guy, who is just looking for a job. Hired immediately by Ray and Peter, Winston is handed a couple of traps and led off by Ray to learn about getting rid of the ghosts, while Peter is informed that there is a man from the EPA waiting for him. Walter Peck ( William Atherton ), the pompous EPA delegate, condescendingly talks to Peter, refusing to acknowledge that Peter is, in fact, a PhD, and therefore, Dr. Venkman, and briefly questions him about the possible environmental impact of their business, and specifically, their custom-built storage facility. He demands to see it, but Peter just patronizes him for a bit before throwing him out. Ray shows Winston how they unload the ghosts they've trapped into the storage facility, while Egon admits he is worried about the facility's looming capacity problem and the larger problem it indicates. To illustrate, Egon tells them that his latest research indicates that the city is experiencing a colossal increase in paranormal activity, comparing it to a 600-pound Twinkie. Peter joins them, mentioning the EPA, and memorably asks, "What about the Twinkie?" A brief shot on the top of Dana's building shows that dog-like gargoyle statues atop the roof are breaking apart and real animals are underneath the stone. Back inside, Dana arrives home, and is once again accosted by Louis who is raving about his party. He is disappointed when Dana tells him she has a date. She gets rid of him again, and goes into her apartment, undressing and talking on the phone. She sits in an armchair for a moment before noticing the same growling sounds from the kitchen. Before she can react, three arms burst from the chair and hold Dana down as she is dragged through her kitchen door to one of the Terror Dogs. Another shot on the roof shows that the gargoyles on the roof have completely broken apart, and whatever was in them is loose. Louis' party continues as he rambles on about the price efficiency of his hosting a party. Two guests show up, hand Louis their coats, and he throws them -unnoticing- on the terror dog sitting at his desk. It roars, and bursts through the door, apparently only after Louis. He runs out of the apartment, through Central Park, before being cornered and attacked outside Tavern on the Green. Meanwhile, Peter arrives at Dana's apartment, stepping over the carnage of Louis' party, and knocks on the door. Dana opens it, dressed in a slinky red dress, and asks, "Are you the Keymaster?" Peter says no, so she angrily slams the door in his face. He knocks again, and enters after answering her question "yes". Dana says that she is Zuul, and they must prepare for the coming of Gozer, The Destructor. Peter talks to her and resists the possessed Dana's aggressive advances, before requesting to speak with the real Dana. At first, Dana coyly replies "There is no Dana, there is only Zuul," trying to kiss him but Peter, still trying to get through to the real Dana Barrett, restrains her. The possessed Dana now becomes visibly annoyed at his persistence, as Peter once again inquires about the real Dana; she replies in an unearthly demonic voice "There is no Dana, only Zuul!" Peter sarcastically dismisses her and gives her to the count of three to talk to the real Dana. With each count, Dana presents further signs of her possession: at first demonically rolling her eyes, then panting like an animal, and finally roaring like a demonic beast and magically floating above her bed. She turns over in midair, to face down at Peter whom asks her to please come down. Dana roars fiercely at him, finally frightening him. Louis, looking disheveled and generally abused, runs out from Central Park rambling, and asks a hansom cab horse if he is the "Gatekeeper". The driver ( Danny Stone ) chases him off, so he runs away, screaming about a sign of Gozer's arrival. The NYPD arrives at the Ghostbusters headquarters, to drop off Louis, who's been captured and rejected by both the city jail and Bellevue's psych ward. Egon looks at him briefly, and takes him inside. Louis reveals his name is Vinz Clortho, Keymaster of Gozer. He goes on about the history of Gozer, how the god assumes various forms and would mean the destruction of the civilization he targets. During the exam, Peter calls, and tells Egon about the developments with Dana, who is now lies heavily sedated on the bed next to him. Egon tells Peter in return about Louis' psychic transformation, and insists Peter come back to headquarters. Winston and Ray are driving back to the office, Winston driving while Ray examines the "very odd" blueprints of Dana's apartment building. Winston asks Ray about his belief in God, and speculates that the reason they've been so busy lately is because the dead have been rising from the grave, as it was foretold in the Book of Revelations, as a precursor to judgment day, and the end of the world. Ray ponders this. Back at headquarters, Walter Peck has returned with a court order, a cop, and a Con Edison worker ( Larry Dilg ), intent on shutting down the storage facility. Egon tries to talk them out of it, and Peter arrives just in time to antagonize Peck some more, before the cop intervenes and the Con Ed guy, although highly reticent handling equipment he has never seen before, shuts off the power grid. A warning buzzer sounds, and everyone clears the building, as the storage facility rumbles and begins to destroy the basement. A supernatural light show occurs, as all kinds of paranormal energy bursts through the building and shoots out of the roof. Across town, Dana, immediately wakes up from her sedation, and walks toward her living room window. Louis is excited, claiming this is the sign he was waiting for. Ray and Winston arrive to witness the disaster's immediate aftermath even as Peck demands they all be arrested for causing it. Enraged at this self-righteous blowhard outright lying about them while ignoring his own responsibility in this disaster, Egon attacks Peck, getting everyone arrested. Ghosts run rampant through the city, but most of the energy seems to run directly to Dana's building. Dana growls at the energy, ripping out the wall of her apartment in a small explosion. Sitting in jail, Ray shows Egon and Peter the blueprints of Dana's apartment building, pointing out highly unorthodox methods and materials, especially near the roof. Egon tells them that the building, he's discovered, was designed by an insane architect/surgeon named Ivo Shandor. In the 20's, Shandor was evidently so disgusted by the First World War, that he decided he would try to bring about the end of the world with a secret society of Gozer worshippers. They performed rituals atop Dana's building, and the roof itself was meant to be the gateway to allow Gozer into our world. A guard arrives ( Reginald VelJohnson ), and tells the Ghostbusters that the mayor wants to meet them, to deal with the rash of ghosts and other unbelievable phenomenon happening throughout the city. Louis arrives at Dana's demolished apartment, introducing himself as the Keymaster. A smiling Dana responds she is the Gatekeeper and they share a passionate kiss before slowly making their way up to the roof via a mythical staircase behind the wall where Dana's fridge used to be as lightning flashes ominously. The four men and Peck are brought before the Mayor ( David Margulies ) both arguing their sides. Peck claims the Ghostbusters are con artists and use nerve gases to force people to hallucinate and have visions of ghosts. Winston steps up and defends the things he's seen as real while numerous city officials like the Fire Chief present evidence of bizarre phenomena of which the Ghostbusters have the only possible explanation. Ray reveals that the city is headed for a disaster of "biblical proportions", and Venkman finally appeals to the possibility that the mayor could be responsible for saving the lives of millions of registered voters. Convinced, the Mayor throws Peck out of his office and offers whatever support he can to the Ghostbusters. People have gathered all around the apartment building, which has clearly become the center of the entire mess. They cheer as the Ghostbusters arrive with a police escort and following National Guard troops, and Peter mugs for the crowd. The four men put on their proton packs and are prepared to enter, but a sudden earthquake seems to swallow them beneath the street. Eventually, they emerge unharmed to the continued cheers from the crowd. They band together and head inside. Once inside, they must climb the stairs to Dana's 22nd floor apartment. Dana and Louis lie on a large stone table as lightning flashes in the dark sky above them. Dana seductively wakes up, followed by Louis. They stare in awe at the large Temple in front of them then walk toward the opposite stone pedestals where the Terror Dog statues once stood. The Ghostbusters arrive to find Dana's apartment burned out and more or less destroyed. They see the staircase in the kitchen and go up. Dana and Louis stand on their pedestals and raise their arms to the sky. They are suddenly struck by bolts of lightning which they redirect toward the temple door, causing it to grind open and signaling the arrival of Gozer the Gozerian. With the temple doors finally open, Dana and Louis now absorb their full power as the Ghostbusters arrive just in time to see the lightning converge on the demonic couple in a huge blast, transforming them back into the monstrous Terror Dogs, who now turn and roar menacingly at the Ghostbusters before leaping towards the side of the Temple doors. Gozer appears in the form of an exotic female with a tall, dark flattop and blood red eyes ( Slavitza Jovan ). Egon points out that she's not really a woman, but rather, takes the shape of whatever it wants. Peter goads Ray into talking to her. Ray very formally requests that Gozer returns to her place of origin, but she responds by asking if he is a god. He says no, and Gozer responds by shooting lightning from her fingers and nearly hurling the Ghostbusters off the roof. They regroup and decide to attack Gozer, but she nimbly jumps clear of their streams and lands behind them. Another attack proves fruitless as she disappears rather than being caught in the streams. Believing they are victorious, the Ghostbusters begin to celebrate, but it is short-lived as Gozer's booming voice is heard above the city demanding that they "choose the form of the Destructor". Peter tells everyone to clear their minds, and think of nothing, so no form will be taken, but it is clearly too late. Ray admits he did his best, but something just popped in his mind, something he thought could never harm anyone. "It's the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man." A 10-story, white, puffy marshmallow man begins to walk the streets of the city, crushing everything underfoot. When he is close enough, the Ghostbusters open fire, setting Mr. Stay Puft ablaze, as he begins to climb the building, King Kong style. Running for cover, the Ghostbusters appear out of ideas, until Egon suggests that they cross the streams, in an effort to close the door, and destroy Gozer's portal. Realizing this will probably mean their doom, the Ghostbusters go ahead with the plan, and set off to finish the god. Crossing the streams does indeed result in a catastrophic explosion, destroying the temple and incinerating the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, raining molten marshmallow all over the street, including an onlooking Walter Peck. Back on the roof, the Ghostbusters have survived, and slowly emerge from the rubble, covered in marshmallow. Peter finds the roasted carcasses of the Terror Dogs, and believes Dana dead. Behind him, though, her fingers crack through the hardened ruins of the animal, and the Ghostbusters quickly break apart the rest, freeing her and Louis. They leave the roof, and Winston exclaims, "I love this town!" As the closing credits roll, the Ghostbusters return to the street to the roaring cheers of the crowd. Peter and Dana kiss in front of everyone, Louis is helped into an ambulance, and as they drive off, the green ghost from the hotel roars toward the camera as it fades to black.

Health unions call for arrest of lady in nurse assault incident

Posted: January 4, 2024 | Last updated: January 4, 2024

• In a video shared online, a lady is seen assaulting a nurse at the front desk of the hospital while hurling insults at her for allegedly not attending to an emergency.

• At some point, the lady who was in the company of a man, invoked the name of a Cabinet Secretary and threatened the nurse with severe action.

Health unions have called for the immediate arrest of a lady and a man who were caught on camera allegedly assaulting a nurse on night duty at a hospital in Busia.

Under the Health Union Caucus, the group has further called for the provision of armed security personnel and enhanced security surveillance and intervention protocols in all health facilities across the country to avert such incidents.

"We call on the relevant authorities, including the police, to swiftly investigate this incident and bring the perpetrators to justice," they said.

"The Unions will be petitioning Senate to amend necessary legislation to provide for enhanced security measures within health facilities and enforcement of Occupational Safety and Health Act in health facilities."

In a video shared online, a lady is seen reportedly assaulting a nurse at the front desk of the hospital while hurling insults at her for allegedly not attending to an emergency.

At some point, the lady who was in the company of a man, invoked the name of a Cabinet Secretary and threatened the nurse with severe action.

The health unions said such acts of aggression jeopardise the safety and well-being of healthcare professionals and undermines the critical healthcare services they provide to the community.

"It is deeply distressing that healthcare workers, who dedicate their lives to saving lives and alleviating suffering are subjected to violence in the course of their duties," they said.

"This incident is a stark reminder of the urgent need for enhanced security measures within healthcare facilities across the country."

The group reminded the general public that they are bound by the Health Act to adhere to the rules of a health facility when receiving treatment or using the health services provided by the establishment.

They said the same Act grants a healthcare provider the right to refuse to treat a user who is physically or verbally abusive or who sexually harasses him or her except in an emergency where no alternative healthcare personnel is available.

"It is, however, worth noting that attacks on health workers have been on an upward trend and assailants are not held to account in most of the cases," the unions said.

The team cited a case in Naivasha where health workers were threatened at gunpoint and two similar cases in Kisii and Migori.

The union said health workers are exposed to these criminal acts especially during night duty largely because hospitals do not have scanners and anybody can gain access with weapons.

"We urge law enforcement agencies to collaborate with healthcare institutions to establish effective security protocols that will safeguard the well-being of both healthcare providers and patients."

The joint statement was issued by the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO), Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN), KMPDU among others.
