World's first virtual ghost pepper challenge will have you in stitches
Dave, from Canada was more than bold about his ghost pepper tolerance. He was absolutely cocky. His wife grew a patch of various hot peppers and he decided to challenge everyone he knew to an eating contest. The idea was to create some hype and stage an event that raised money for a local charity. He issued a challenge to all of his friends and a few took him up on his bold, and exaggerated claim that he held the word's ghost pepper title belt. But since the world was now using Zoom, Dave decided that he could take on the entire internet. He put forth a statement on social media that he was the world ghost pepper champion and that he was unbeatable. Anyone, anywhere in the world was invited, no, DARED to compete over a Zoom call. This might be the world's first virtual ghost pepper challenge. Seltun is from India and he responded through Facebook that he was more than up for the contest. Dave decided to interview Seltun to gauge his suitabilty. Seltun said that he eats ghost peppers for breakfast and he grows them in his garden. This was exactly what Dave was looking for, or so he thought! Dave explained that this virtual version of the stunt was actually going to generate views and hopefully money to be used for a good cause. Because Seltun is from India, it seems appropriate that a cause in his country would benefit. Seltun and Dave agreed to assist an elephant sanctuary in India called Wildlife S.O.S. Seltun was offered half, with Dave donating his half to the sanctuary that he has visited and loves so much. With a chuckle, Seltun answered that he did not want any of the money. He simply wanted the title and he wanted to see Dave suffer. Seltun knew that Dave had grown too bold and that he needed a lesson. Seltun was happy to donate his share as well. Dave and Seltun squared off over Zoom with each one eating a whole raw ghost pepper They had milk and water at the ready. The winner would be the one who did not ring the bell and tap out first. Seltun provided the lesson that Dave desperately needed and he also offered Dave some tips on how to do better next time. Seltun employed a mind over matter/concentration approach that worked well. Dave simply had no strategy except to eat and cry. The result will have you laughing and maybe even crying yourself. Any shares of this video will benefit wildlifesos.org, an amazing animal sanctuary for elephants and sloth bears in Agra, India. Dave visited this haven in 2020 and he was touched by the great work that goes on there for these deserving creatures.

Man Sets New World Record for Eating the Most Ghost Peppers in One Minute
Hot-pepper-scarfing speed-eater Gregory Foster ate 17 Ghost peppers in 60 seconds, collecting his third world record.
Hot news: Gregory Foster has done it again.
It’s just been a few months since news broke that the hot-sauce company owner claimed a Guinness World Record for eating three scorching-hot Carolina Reaper chili peppers in the least amount of time (8.72 seconds!). That world record, which Foster actually snapped in December 2021, was his second: In 2016, Foster collected his first hot-pepper-related world record for consuming the most Carolina Reaper peppers (120 grams) in one minute.
Now word has hit that Foster has broken a third hot-pepper-speed-eating record : This time, he collected the crown for eating the most Ghost peppers (a.k.a. Bhut Jolokia chili peppers, which register 1 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU) per pepper. For comparison, jalapenos range from 2,500-8,000 SHU) in one minute. And the number of peppers Foster put away was seriously sizzling: 17 peppers, tipping the scales at a total of 110.5 grams (3.98 ounces), and unseating previous record holder, Mike Jack, of London, Ontario, Canada, who ate 97 grams (3.42 ounces) of the peppers in March 2019.
Foster, it turns out, set the new Ghost-pepper-scarfing record on November 14, 2021, but news of his fast-eating feat has only just hit, thanks to a video Guinness World Records just posted on YouTube in which Foster’s minute-long record-breaking Ghost-pepper-chili-eating session can be watched in full.
In the video, Foster’s concentration and capsaicin tolerance are apparent. Wearing gloves to protect his hands, a tie-dyed Inferno Farms T-shirt, and a remarkably neutral and admirably focused expression, Foster tucks pepper after pepper into his mouth, chewing and swallowing them as he goes, as a man holding a timer stands by.
(“I've got a good poker face!” Foster told Food Network after setting his previous record.)
When the time is up, Foster shows off his empty mouth and waits to drink.
Told that he has beaten the record for most Bhut Jolokia chili peppers eaten in a minute, Foster says what you’d imagine anyone would in that situation: “Oh, thank God!” he exclaims, still looking rather pained and not venturing to break a smile.
As he guzzles a Pepto Bismol-pink liquid with a half-and-half chaser, followed by some milk, one of the people who has witnessed Foster successfully complete his record attempt in a public park in San Diego, asks him how he feels.
“I’m on fire,” he replies.
Foster, who has dedicated himself for decades to increasing his tolerance for spicy foods, apparently eventually recovered enough to tell Guinness that the record attempt was “a personal challenge to see how far I can push myself and my love of the super hot peppers.”
Even so, Foster was pretty chill about his new record, telling Guinness he very much enjoyed eating chilis and pushing his boundaries.
"As a chili lover, I’ve been trying to advance the awareness and the excitement surrounding the super-hot chilis out there,” he said. “This attempt was solely a personal endeavor to achieve another Guinness World Record alongside my currently standing [ones].”
What hot-chili-pepper-speed-eating challenge will Foster tackle next? Who knows? But someone, please, ready the Pepto Bismol, half-and-half and milk!

This boy took the ghost pepper challenge and and failed miserably
The video, which was published, on May 30 has gone viral recording 1.5 million views on YouTube- till Saturday morning.
According to the Guinness World Records, the ghost pepper is said to be one of the hottest varieties of chili pepper in the world. So much that it is said to be nearly 400 times hotter than Tabasco sauce – a moderately spicy sauce used in cooking.
As usual, there were a lot of contenders to try the ghost pepper challenge.
Here is a boy who tried it but failed instantly in taking the ‘heat’.
In spite of repeated orders by his friends in the video not to swallow it, the boy does exactly that. He is heard shouting and screaming, “I’m gonna die…die” in the video.
Check out the video here
Now, keeping jokes aside, take a look at a scale here to understand the ‘spiciness’ of ghost pepper (Bhut Jolokia):
From a scientific standpoint, a report in medicaldaily.com says that “capsaicin (the chemical behind the ‘spiciness’ in chilli peppers) is actually a neurotoxin and in large enough concentrations can cause seizures, heart attacks, and even death.”
The report also quoted Dr Paul Bosland, the man who discovered this variety, who says that “Enough of this pepper in a short period of time can surely kill you”.

100 Popular YouTube Challenges (And Ideas) to Help You Go Viral
YouTube Challenges are a great way to increase your subscriber count and attract new followers. You can use them for viral marketing campaigns to get hundreds, thousands, or even millions of views for your channel. YouTube challenges can help your channel and brand with:
- Engaging your audience
- Keeping up with the hottest trends
- Creating high-quality content
- Setting your brand and channel apart
Look no further if you’re stumped on which YouTube video challenges to try out for your YouTube channel! We’ve compiled 100 of the best YouTube challenges you can do with friends or yourself.
Different YouTube challenge video ideas
YouTube challenge videos have been around since the dawn of time (around 2005). These videos are a great way to have fun, engage your target audience, and reach YouTube influencer status. So, let’s jump in!
Food challenges are among the most popular challenge videos. We’ve all tried swallowing a spoonful of cinnamon at some point in our lives, right? Maybe eating a ghost pepper? No? Well, neither one of them is very pleasant. Thankfully, not all food Youtube challenges are as uncomfortable as those two.
Ghost Pepper Challenge
If you decide to take on the ghost pepper challenge, here’s what you need to know about the ghost pepper and why it might just be worth the pain.
The ghost pepper is an extremely hot pepper from South America. As one of the hottest peppers out there, it has a heat rating of over 1 million Scoville units . That means it’s hotter than a habanero pepper. Be sure to have a glass of milk handy!
Put your tastebuds to the test with the Guess-the-Flavor Challenge! In this challenge, you put on a blindfold and eat some flavored food (i.e., candy, Fanta, chips, etc.). You can make it more fun by creating a prize for guessing correctly!
The pizza challenge involves putting different ingredients into opaque containers.
Participants then randomly select containers and create their pizza from the ingredients in the bag.
The real challenge is having to eat your creation.
Gummy Food vs. Real Food
The gummy vs. real food challenge requires two people, each with two versions of some type of food: one real and one gummy. Each puts a covered tray in front of them – one tray has real food, and the other has gummy food. Whichever tray they’ve chosen is the one they have to eat!
This challenge may seem easy, but remember that there are FULL-SCALE gummy pizzas out there. It makes your jaw hurt just thinking about it.
The Chubby Bunny challenge is one of those classic YouTube challenges that just isn’t going away. Don’t let the name fool you, it’s a pretty hard challenge ! It involves putting marshmallows in your mouth, and after each marshmallow, you say the words “Chubby Bunny.” Warning: your cheeks may hurt from all the laughter!
This is one for the history books. The Cinnamon Challenge has been around for at least a decade, and as far as we’re concerned, it’s still getting views! All you’ve got to do is swallow a spoonful of cinnamon, and may the odds be in your favor.
As a tip: don’t take any breaths while doing this challenge.
Eat it or Wear it
The Eat it or Wear it Challenge gets pretty messy. You put a variety of different types of foods in opaque bags, so you cannot tell what they are. Then, you give each bag a number.
Participants then choose bags (or go numerically) one at a time. You have to eat whatever food is in the bag. If you don’t want to eat it, then be prepared to wear it.
The winner is the person that is wearing the least food.
Not only is this challenge viral on YouTube. You’ll still see it on TikTok and Instagram . The Exploding Watermelon Challenge involves putting elastic bands around a watermelon. You keep adding elastic bands until the watermelon explodes. The suspense for this challenge is intense. We recommend doing this outdoors.
McDonald’s Roulette Challenge
McDonald’s Roulette is a fun way for you to mix up your next visit to McDonald’s.
You just need to go to the drive-through and order the same thing as the car in front.
You may get an order for a family of seven, or you may just get a black coffee. It’s all a part of the fun!
Pancake Art Challenge
Collins Key popularized this challenge, but you don’t need to go to the extreme levels he goes to on his channel.
It’s a fairly self-explanatory task. It’s a battle between who can make the best pancake by just using pancake mix and frying them.
You can make this activity more fun and your artwork more colorful if you use food coloring in different squeeze bottles with batter, so you start painting in the frying pan.
Sour vs. Sweet
For this challenge, in each turn, you will have to randomly pick between eating sweet or spicy food. This challenge works better in couples.
SQUID GAME Honeycomb Candy Challenge
One of the most famous scenes of the “Squid Game” show on Netflix is the Honeycomb Candy Challenge.
The most challenging part is making the candy! Also called Dalgona candy ( recipe here ), the goal is to use a needle or toothpick to separate the inside shape from the outside of the candy.
Oh, and you have a time limit of 10 minutes.
At least you don’t have the same penalty as the contestants had in “Squid Game.”
Spicy vs. Extreme Spicy Food Challenge
For this food challenge, there are two plates with food. One is extra spicy, and the other is just your average-joe spicy. For each turn, one person has to choose one of the foods, and the other will eat the other.
Don’t Wipe your Mouth challenge
The Don’t Wipe Your Mouth Challenge only needs one person to make it, and it’s pretty simple. You just have to eat messy food without wiping your mouth. This works better with finger food with a lot of sauce — chicken wings or ribs, for example.
This game aims to guess the type (or flavor) of candy you’re eating while blindfolded! Whoever gets the answer right most often wins.
Mystery Drink Challenge
The mystery drink challenge requires contestants to conceal various drinks with them not knowing what they’re drinking.
You can either choose a variety of flavors and see if contestants can guess what they are.
Or you can go with a much more entertaining version that involves a yummy drink and then others of varying disgustingness.
Healthy vs. Junk Food Challenge
Depending on what type(s) of food you like to consume, this challenge could be easy or difficult for you.
The healthy vs. junk foods challenge pairs two or more individuals against each other for a given time period where they can either only eat healthy foods or junk foods.
Healthy food isn’t necessarily tastier than junk food, but you’re going to feel a whole lot better after eating it than if you’d eaten junk food.
Only Using One Color To Cook Challenge
This challenge is pretty self-explanatory, but the execution is more difficult than you think.
Can you cook up a tasty meal with only one color?
What’s in My Mouth?
You’ll want to grab a partner for this challenge to make it more exciting!
A blindfolded person is given an assortment of food, but sometimes also objects, that are put into their mouths.
It’s quite easy to get started as all you really need is a blindfold, and you can easily produce some funny, spontaneous moments on YouTube.
Let The Person in Front of you Decide What to Eat
You can either use a drive-through or go behind the person in front of you to see what they order and then order the same thing. Who knows? You might end up liking their taste better.
Whether you succeed or fail at the smoothie challenge is up to you. If you don’t get a delicious treat, then you may need to run to a trash can.
Here, you take some ingredients; half should taste good, while the other half shouldn’t taste too good. You then write down each ingredient on a piece of paper and then mix them together in a bowl or hat.
Players then choose ingredients randomly from the bowl to blend into their smoothies.
To complete the challenge, you just need to drink the smoothie. Sounds pretty good, right? That is until you start mixing salsa with ice cream.
Ye be warned, those with easily upset tummies.
Bean Boozled Challenge
The Bean Boozled Challenge is a fun YouTube challenge that is probably even more fun for Harry Potter fans. You’ll be challenged to eat different jelly beans based on the flavors of Harry Potter books/films.
To complete this challenge, you will need the Bean Boozled jelly bean box, where you will encounter ten tasty beans and ten look-alike beans with strange and unusual flavors.
Ice Cream Taste Test
With the Ice Cream Taste Challenge, all you need to get a bunch of different flavors of ice cream and then blind-test each one.
By guessing the right flavors, you win!
Challenge yourself and get someone else to purchase the different flavors, or mix up your own ice cream with unique flavors.
Tin Can Challenge
The Tin Can Challenge is a different kind of blind-tasting challenge.
This is an easy one to set up. For this challenge, just grab some canned food and remove the labels from each one.
Now mix everything up, so you don’t know which one is which, and each participant takes turns trying out random cans.
Baby Food Challenge
Another quick and easy challenge for you is the Baby Food Challenge.
If you want to buy baby food, you can go to the store to pick some up or order a mixed pack online.
This can be done on your own or with other people.
Hungry Hippo Challenge
To participate in the Hungry Hippo Challenge, you must eat as much candy as possible in a certain period.
You keep putting the candies you can get with your mouth into a bowl or cup, and then at the end, the person who has the most candies in their bowl or cup wins.
Brand Name vs. Generic Brand
Can you tell the difference between brand-name foods and generic ones? This challenge tests your sense of taste and adds an interesting twist when the generic brand is chosen over the name brand.
Whipped Cream Challenge
The whipped cream challenge requires you to place a dollop of whipped cream on the top of your hand with your arm extended. With your other hand, you smack your arm, causing the whipped cream to fly into the air, and hopefully, you then catch it in your mouth.
I say hopefully because it’s not as easy as you may think, and it can be quite funny where it ends up falling.
Haribo Sugarless Gummy Bear Challenge
While Haribo Gummy Bears are typically sweet and delicious candies, many reviews call out the sugarless gummy bears for causing an upset stomach. Nothing major, but enough to spark a YouTube challenge trend.
This challenge involves eating a 5-pound bag of the German confectionery company sugar-free bears.
The YouTube challenges listed below are great for the family! Whether you want to do a video with the siblings, the parents, your spouse, or maybe even the kids (if they’re old enough), these challenges are sure to be a bonding experience.
Who Wore it Better
This is a fun challenge to do with your siblings! Get outfit inspiration from a celebrity or a movie, and you each throw together a similar outfit based on the original inspiration. Then, you let the viewers decide who wore it better!
Coin Flip Challenge – Crazy Dares Challenge
This can be a really fun way to take on a dare. It works best when you have a group size of 2-5 people so you can rotate the tasks. Decide on a dare between two or more people, for example, “eat a can of cat food.” Each must then decide whether they want to be heads or tails and flip a coin. Whoever loses has to do the challenge.
Making my Friend Ugly
This challenge is pretty self-explanatory. Do you know when you’re playing Sims and selecting “Randomize” in the character creation? It’s pretty much like that.
Just pick out the outfit and makeup to make the other participant look their worst.
One person holds a remote while the other participants must do things like singing, eating noisy food (like chips), or any other activity that usually makes you make noise. Each time the person holding the remote control presses the mute button, the others must go dead quiet. You will lose points if you make any sound when the mute button is pressed.
Doing Each Other’s Makeup
This challenge can be done with a friend, sibling, or partner – it requires doing one another’s makeup. To make it funnier, pair up with someone who is particularly bad at doing makeup.
Mom vs. Dad Outfit Challenge
Ask both your parents to purchase you an outfit with a limited budget — $30, for example. See who gets you an outfit that matches your style and personality the best.

Truth or Dare Challenge
Write down a list that includes questions that could be embarrassing or personal. For every turn, a person will have to choose a question randomly. If they don’t respond, they’ll have to face the consequences of not answering and do a dare.

The rules are pretty simple for this challenge. You simply tell two truths and one convincing lie about yourself and see if the other participant(s) can tell which one is the lie.
Blindfolded Drawing Challenge
It’s a pretty straightforward challenge. Two people have to draw the same picture while wearing a blindfold. Whoever creates the better drawing wins the challenge.

This is one of the more wholesome challenges, as all it requires is for you to do a random act of kindness. Best Friend Challenge
Ask personal questions to a close friend — favorite color, favorite movie, first pet’s names, etc. — and if they don’t answer correctly, they lose one point. You can use a point system or some kind of “punishment.” Covering faces with whipped cream, etc. Be careful not to ruin your friendship.

One of the most common party games around, “Never Have I Ever,” is a game where one player says, “never have I ever…” and then something they’ve never done before. All the other players who have done what the player said must take a drink!
For this challenge, two people sit over a bucket, each with a cup of water. Then, they both take a big mouthful of water, and other players take turns to try and make them laugh by telling jokes, pulling faces, doing funny things, or you can simply make them stare at each other.
The winner is the last person to still have a mouthful of water in the end. Anyone can challenge the winner of the two.

Guitar Hero Meets Ghost Peppers In This Bizarre Streaming Challenge
The worlds of "Guitar Hero" and insane eating challenges came together in a recent steam by CarnyJared . In the video, the "Guitar Hero" pro managed to consume an entire ghost pepper while playing one of the series' most infamous and appropriately named tracks, "Through the Fire and the Flames."
While the ghost pepper may not be the world's hottest pepper , it is plenty spicy, and challenge videos of people attempting to consume one on camera have been popular on YouTube for years. Likewise, "Through the Fire and the Flames," a DragonForce song that debuted in "Guitar Hero 3," may not be the most challenging song to play on a plastic guitar, as observed by fans on Reddit , but its difficulty remains legendary.
While CarnyJared's attempt to conquer the ghost pepper while hitting the hundreds of notes that players face in a "Through the Fire and Flames" run can mostly be seen as successful, watching the video might make viewers wonder if it was worth it. Even though he did make it through the song, and the video gamer did not get sent to the hospital , the experience looked pretty painful.
Here is what happened when CarnyJared ate an entire ghost pepper and then tried to play "Through the Fire and the Flames" on "Guitar Hero."
CarnyJared had to fight back tears
Like most people who are still interested in the sadly dormant " Guitar Hero " franchise, CarnyJared plays " Clone Hero ," a modern revival of the series created by Ryan Foster. While "Clone Hero" is famous for its extensive list of community-created songs, which gamers can find on Reddit , the streamer instead went with a song that many "Guitar Hero" fans know, but few have mastered.
Before loading up "Through the Fire and the Flames," CarnyJared first prepped a pretty hefty-looking ghost pepper . The streamer considered trying to find one that wasn't quite as massive for a moment before finally committing to his decision and popping the whole thing in his mouth. Things started to get intense for CarnyJared within seconds, as the ghost pepper, which is 107 times hotter than a jalapeno (as rated on the Scoville scale), started to affect the streamer almost immediately.
As CarnyJared dived into his " Through the Fire and Flames " run, restarting to change some settings, things quickly got worse. After about a minute, the streamer blinked back tears as he tried to concentrate on the game and not the heat of the ghost pepper. Soon, he began trying to consume dairy to try and fight back the sensation. CarnyJared even doused himself in milk at one point as a seemingly ineffective fix against the overwhelming spice.
The streamer eventually made it "Through the Fire and Flames" and came out the other side, hopefully with a new appreciation for the power of ghost peppers .

A ghost pepper challenge nearly killed a man by tearing a hole in his esophagus
Our competitive nature may be the thing that pushes us to achieve things never before accomplished and to test the limits of human potential, but that nature can also easily backfire — sometimes with dangerous or deadly consequences.
Recently, a 47-year-old man who showed up at a San Francisco emergency room perfectly demonstrated that fact.
A ghost pepper challenge — people do this sort of thing on YouTube frequently — left him with a hole in his esophagus. That injury could have killed him, but luckily he received treatment first.
Ghost peppers, or Bhut Jolokia, reliably come in near the top of rankings of the hottest, most-painful to consume chilies in the world. (They've been surpassed on the Scoville scale , a measure of the "heat" brought by these carefully cultivated instruments of pain, by several others, including the Naga Viper, Trinidad Moruga Scorpion, and Carolina Reaper .)
Before arriving at the hospital, the patient had been "at a local restaurant featuring a hamburger topped with ghost pepper puree as part of an eating contest," according to a case report published in the journal Clinical Communications by University of California–San Francisco emergency department personnel.
Upon arriving at the ER, doctors noted that he was experiencing severe abdominal and chest pain after the challenge had left him violently "retching and vomiting." For whatever it's worth, the patient had successfully finished the burger.
Potentially deadly consequences
Six glasses of water had done nothing for his pain, unsurprisingly. A medically administered "gastrointestinal cocktail" also failed to alleviate his symptoms, including a heart rate of 106 beats per minute. The doctors write that he continued to grow more and more hypoxic, meaning that not enough oxygen was reaching his organs.
They took him into surgery to put a tube into his chest and collected fluid containing "hamburger, onions, and other green vomitus material," and at the same time, they noticed an esophagal tear just about one inch long. In total, he required three chest tubes and one gastric tube before he began to recover.
The chest tubes were removed after 14 days and he began to be able to tolerate fluids on day 17. After 23 days, the patient was able to leave the hospital, though he he still needed to eat through the gastric tube.
The spontaneous rupture in the esophagus that the patient experienced is known as Boerhaave syndrome, caused by trauma from vomiting. With treatment, 20 to 40% of Boerhaave patients die. Without that treatment, mortality rates approach 100%, according to the case report.
The researchers write that even though hot chilies are known to be "unpleasant," there hadn't been any reason to think more serious side effects like this were possible.
So the next time a friend asks if you are interested in a ghost pepper challenge, you now have a very good reason to say no.
Watch: 'This was such a bad idea': We tried the spiciest tortilla chip in the world
Best of What's New: The 50 greatest innovations of 2023 »
We ate the world’s spiciest chip, cried for 45 minutes, then wrote this article about it
Here's why humans love pain.
By Kendra Pierre-Louis | Published Oct 12, 2017 11:30 PM EDT
Once upon a time, Tabasco sauce was considered spicy and a jalapeno hit the upper threshold of heat for the American palate. But that was before 2007, when the Bhut jolokia —an Indian chili better known as the ghost pepper—became the first to top a million Scolville Heat Units (SHU), the measure of spicy pain. While your typical sweet pepper weighs in at zero on the Scolville scale, the ghost pepper’s 1 million SHUS make it 125 times hotter than your hottest jalapeno; between 200 and 400 times hotter than Tabasco sauce.
If the thought of chowing down on a pepper that spicy gives you heartburn, the Austin, Texas based tortilla chip company Paqui (rhymes with hockey) has what can only be described as a delicious form of torture in store for you. Their Carolina Reaper Madness Tortilla Chip is a savory mix of not one, but two of the world’s hottest peppers. It combines the aforementioned ghost pepper with the even hotter variety for which the chip gets its name; the Carolina Reaper. Chipotle pepper powder (which is essentially a dried and aged jalapeno pepper) is added for additional flavor. So for that very brief moment before the heat actually kicks in, your torture tortilla chip is pretty tasty. The company claims that it is the hottest tortilla chip in the world.
Having eaten it, I can honestly say that if it’s not the world’s hottest tortilla chip, I’m afraid of the chip that beats it.
While the ghost pepper weighs in at 1 million SHU’s, the Carolina Reaper has been measured as high as 2.2 million SHU—more than twice as hot. But the amount of capsaicin, the compound that triggers our mouths to feel the burn, can vary depending on growing conditions. On average, the Carolina Reaper clocks in at 1.569 million SHUS, and the ghost pepper around 800,000 SHU. Of course, averages can shift.
“The reapers are much hotter now,” says Ed Currie, founder of the Puckerbutt Pepper Company and the creator of the Carolina Reaper. Currie supplied the reapers used in the chip. “We’re being recertified at Guinness World Records right now with an average of 1.922 million instead of 1.569 million SHU. The peppers themselves are coming in about a fifth hotter to a third hotter.”
And turning the pepper into a powder doesn’t weaken the heat. It actually concentrates it: you’re losing all of that water . What this means is that even if you’ve eaten the Carolina Reaper Madness Tortilla Chip in the past—this is the second year the company has offered this limited-edition chip—this year’s version should be even hotter. It’s no wonder the company sells single chips instead of a bag, packing the daunting snack in a box that looks like a coffin. It reads like a marketing gimmick, but it’s a gimmick designed to save us from ourselves.
While the burning in my mouth had pretty much abated within an hour of chomping the chip, I could still feel its presence several hours later. I could practically track the progress of my digestion through the (not totally unpleasant) burning sensation of the chip winding its way through my intestines.
“That’s one of the things with the Carolina reaper,” says Currie. “It doesn’t go away for a long, long time. And every time you think it’s gone away, you have a drink of something or you start moving around, your body just reactivates and all that heat is back again.”
Capsaicin creates a burning sensation by exciting the body’s TRPV1 receptors, sensors that are ordinarily responsible for sensing actual heat. But TRPV1 receptors aren’t just located in our mouths—they’re located in our intestines too. When they’re excited by capsaicin, they can speed up the rate at which food moves through our bowels. That leaves the body with less time to break down the capsaicin culprit. There are TRPV1 receptors in the anus too, which means eating a heavy dose of capsaicin can, for some people, cause a burning sensation on both ends of the equation. Why would anyone sign up for such a fate? It may have something to do with a human quirk called “benign masochism,” which we explain in the video, above.
My Popular Science coworker Billy Cadden , who also sampled a Carolina Reaper Madness chip, says that for him it burned the whole way down—albeit less upon exit than on entrance. I was lucky enough not suffer any scatological side-effects , but it’s not clear why I was spared this final kick.
If all of this seems like madness, Ed’s kids are probably laughing at you.
“My four-year-old and my five-year-old will grab something that’s definitely hotter than what most people can tolerate, like a Carolina Reaper, and they will eat it,” says Currie. “And as soon as their nose starts running or they start crying they’ll go, ‘oh, I need ice cream.’ Their motivation is not that they want the hot. It’s that they want ice cream instead of finishing their dinner.”
What most of us see as a bowel-threatening challenge, his kids just see as a means to a cold, creamy end.

Ghost pepper challenge: Watch eye-watering moment young boy swallows one of world's hottest chillies
It took just a matter of seconds before the boy realised he had made a huge mistake and immediately burst into tears
- 16:01, 3 Jun 2015
- Updated 16:07, 3 Jun 2015
When you swallow one of the world's hottest chillies , you're bound to have an extreme reaction.
And this boy found out the hard way when he swallowed a ghost pepper as a dare with his friends.
Immediately regretting his actions, the boy screams and burst into tears before jumping up and down and clutching at his burning throat.
In the background, the boy's pals can be heard laughing before one says: "Why did you swallow it?"
The ghost pepper, also known as the bhut jolokia, is known as one of the world's hottest chillies, with a rating of more than one million Scoville heat units (SHUs).
To put this in context, Tabasco sauce is rated between 2,500 and 5,000 SHUs.
In the past, viral food eating trends have included the dangerous cinnamon challenge , where a participant swallows a teaspoon of the powdered spice.
Are viral food challenges dangerous?
0+ votes so far.
Turns out it's harder than it sounds and carries substantial health risks because the cinnamon coats and dries the mouth and throat.
It results in coughing, gagging, vomiting and inhaling of cinnamon, leading to throat irritation, breathing difficulties, and risk of pneumonia or even a collapsed lung.
