Best Horror Movies of 2023 Ranked

It didn’t take long for 2023 to find its new scream queen: M3GAN , the Certified Fresh horror hit released the first week of the year, representing another strike of success for Blumhouse . But actress Jenna Ortega (who we proclaimed a Golden Year winner in our Golden Tomato Awards for her contributions to the dark genre arts) took back the crown with Scream VI in March (see where it ranks in the Scream franchise). In this guide to the newest scary movies, we’ll rank every week the best horror movies of 2023, which through the early months saw Knock at the Cabin (from director M. Night Shyamalan ), Brandon Cronenberg’s Infinity Pool , and viral curiosity Skinamarink .

April revved things up with the return of Evil Dead in Rise , and May saw the latest in the long factory line of Stephen King adaptations , The Boogeyman . But, for critics, the one to beat this year is Mexico’s Huesera: The Bone Woman , the body-horror directorial debut of Michelle Garza Cervera.

Then it was a summer of screams with another A24 breakout, Australia’s Talk to Me , as the major studios chugged along with Haunted Mansion , Insidious: The Red Key , and The Blackening.

With the fall came more from The Conjuring universe with The Nun 2 , Saw X , David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer , and then Five Nights at Freddy’s breaking records Halloween weekend.

Check back weekly as we rank the best new horror movies of the 2023, with Certified Fresh films first, followed by Fresh and then the morbidly Rotten.

Recently added: Thanksgiving , Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor , Sister Death , Suitable Flesh , Five Nights at Freddy’s , The Exorcist: Believer , Totally Killer , The Conference , When Evil Lurks .

Channing Tatum plans to remake ‘Ghost’ and take on the Patrick Swayze role himself

Channing Tatum’s production company owns the rights to the seductive 1990 romantic drama “Ghost” and is planning to remake it.

“We actually have the rights,” the “Magic Mike XXL” star-producer let slip in a Vanity Fair interview published Tuesday. The actor was being interviewed while throwing clay with the interviewer, as one does.

The “Bullet Train” actor and “Dog” star and director, 42, added that he could potentially play the late Patrick Swayze’s role in the supernatural thriller , which was written by Bruce Joel Rubin and directed by Jerry Zucker.

NAMES IN THE NEWS : Swayze Gives It Up in ‘Ghost’

Patrick Swayze says his new double-hanky tear-jerker “Ghost” was his heaviest role ever.

July 11, 1990

Swayze, who died in 2009 , played New York investment banker Sam Wheat, who is killed and returns as a ghost to solve his own murder. In his afterlife, he tries to more fully express his love for his girlfriend, played by Demi Moore, through a reluctant medium, played by Whoopi Goldberg in an Oscar-winning turn.

The summer release solidified Swayze as both an actor and a heartthrob and forever associated a sensual clay-throwing scene with the art of pottery. The runaway hit grossed nearly $218 million at the domestic box office and $288 million internationally, placing it among the highest-grossing films of 1990.

According to Vanity Fair, Tatum’s production company, Free Association, is trying to put together the remake and will make changes to move away from some problematic stereotypes associated with the original film. (In 2020, Goldberg suggested that racism and perhaps an unenthusiastic response to the film’s mixed-race cast prevented the classic film from yielding spin-offs and additional adaptations.)

MOVIE REVIEW : An Afterlife Love Story

In our increasingly fragile and unpredictable world, “Ghost”(citywide) might well strike a seductive chord: a lover from the afterlife hovering over his beloved to keep her from harm, trying to communicate the love he couldn’t express to her in life.

July 13, 1990

“[W]e’re going to do something different,” Tatum said, “I think it needs to change a little bit and have our…”

But the actor never finished his thought — because he was very distracted by the “very, very sexual” pottery he was making.

Representatives for Tatum and Free Association did not immediately respond Tuesday to The Times’ requests for comment.

The actor will be onscreen next in the Feb. 10 release “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” re-teaming with “Magic Mike” director Steven Soderbergh for the last installment of the stripper saga that was based on Tatum’s early career as an exotic dancer. The film has also spawned a live show in Las Vegas and an HBO Max reality show.

film ghost 2023

Now streaming on:

Christopher Landon makes wonderfully quirky horror films that defy the typical cynicism of the genre nowadays. He avoids the pretension of “elevated horror” by expressing contagious joy through his filmmaking in movies like “ Happy Death Day ,” " Happy Death Day 2U ," and “ Freaky .” Say what you will about their execution or quality overall; I don’t think anyone can argue against Landon having a damn blast while making them. His latest, “We Have a Ghost,” is at its best when Landon is allowed to be goofy in a way that just makes the viewer smile. Sadly, his writing isn’t as sharp as his directing, as the movie goes on way too long and through multiple endings, even as it seems content to repeat themes and images instead of building on the film’s interesting ideas. In the end, it’s a solid distraction, which is all most people are looking for on Netflix, but I’m hoping he makes “Happy Death Day 3” before revisiting this world.

Based on a short story called Ernest  by Geoff Manaugh , “We Have a Ghost” opens with the Presley family moving to a fixer-upper in Chicago. Father Frank ( Anthony Mackie ) is struggling to make ends meet and to maintain a healthy relationship with his increasingly-distant son Kevin (Jahi Di’Allo Winston, so good in “ Charm City Kings ” and on “Everything Sucks!”). Almost immediately after their arrival, Kevin is exploring the attic when he encounters a trapped soul named Ernest ( David Harbour , giving a silent performance). Ernest can’t talk but has been scaring away inhabitants since the ‘70s when he died. Kevin doesn’t get scared. He films Ernest with his phone, and there’s suddenly a viral ghost.

Imagine if there was an actual ghost all over TikTok and YouTube. What would happen? Landon doesn’t do nearly enough with this rich concept and just has people screaming outside the Presley home, including a guy dressed like Jesus. It’s interesting to watch Frank try to use Ernest’s existence as a cash infusion, becoming a cultural agent of sorts. He even brings in a local medium for an encounter with Ernest, a scene that allows for one of the film’s more impressive effects and potential memes from a Jennifer Coolidge cameo. But there’s not enough done with the idea of what proof of the afterlife would mean. It doesn’t have to be deeply philosophical, but even a little shallow exploration might have filled this concept out a bit.

Instead, “We Have a Ghost” shifts too much focus to a paranormal scientist named Dr. Leslie Monroe ( Tig Notaro ) and her CIA boss Arnold Schipley ( Steve Coulter ). Landon’s film becomes something of a chase/road movie in its midsection as Ernest, Kevin, and their scene-stealing neighbor Joy ( Isabella Russo ) try to escape the armed guards and get to the bottom of why this poor guy hasn’t fully moved to the next plane of existence. Of course, “We Have a Ghost” becomes a bit of a whodunit too as Ernest learns about what really happened to him, including the identity of his killer.

Harbour is effective in a performance that could have been all exaggerated mugging to compensate for zero dialogue, and Winston still feels like a future star; he's so confident and natural at a young age. There’s enough to like here just in the two of them to keep teens and their parents from checking social media too often while it plays, but it lacks that thrust that would make them put the phones down for good. There’s just a lack of urgency, especially in the final act, which repeats ideas and then ends more than once. This movie needs to hum like “Freaky” and “Happy Death Day,” which were notably shorter (and felt tighter).

Even as “We Have a Ghost” sags in places, it never completely fades into the dull background of Netflix originals of late. We may not have an outright winner, but we do have a decent diversion.

On Netflix now.

10 best horror movies of 2023, ranked

Keith Langston

2023 may have been a difficult year for many movies, but it was a damn good year for horror. While films like Wish , The Flash , and Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning struggled to make waves or earn a profit, horror movies became blockbuster hits almost every month. Horror even had a great year on streaming platforms as well, with original films being released on Hulu , Peacock, Prime Video , and, of course, Shudder.

  • 8. Five Nights at Freddy’s

7. The Blackening

5. no one will save you, 4. evil dead rise, 3. totally killer, 2. scream vi, 1. talk to me.

But which horror movies were the absolute best of the year? From box office successes to critical darlings (and, in many cases, both), these 10 horror movies defined 2023 and proved that new life is being breathed into the genre.

Ever since the pandemic, Hollywood has tried to create COVID stories … but nobody wants them. From Katie Holmes’ box office bust, Alone Together , to NBC’s Connecting , which was canceled before it even completed its first season, COVID is a topic still too miserable and raw for most viewers.

  • The 50 best shows on Netflix in January 2024
  • The 10 most anticipated action movies of 2024, ranked
  • The best free movies on YouTube right now (January 2024)

But Sick was different. In the movie, a group social distancing at a secluded lake house is stalked by a masked killer. The COVID setting added a good sense of groundedness to the movie and was a great plot device to explain why the group was so far from others and why nobody came to help. Granted, the movie certainly has similarities to The Strangers , but if you love that style of endlessly suspenseful horror, Sick is a movie you need to watch.

Released in January, M3GAN  had very little competition in theaters. Avatar: The Way of Water was still dominating the box office week after week, and hardly any other new films besides forgettable titles like Plane and House Party were being released. Luckily, a cheesy, campy romp of a horror movie swooped in to become a cultural phenomenon.

M3GAN centered around an AI-powered, life-sized companion doll who becomes murderous and chops up anyone who gets in her way. Also, she dances. Before long, social media was buzzing with M3GAN . Drag queens dressed up as her, people performed her now-iconic dance moves, and she even showed up at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights. The demented doll was everywhere , and for good reason. The movie was cheesy but self-aware of its absurdity, which made it tons of fun.

8. Five Nights at Freddy’s

Five Nights at Freddy’s earns a place on this list because, even though it isn’t that great of a movie, there are a lot of great aspects to it. No, it wasn’t very scary, and sadly, the movie is completely void of the jump scares the game is famous for. And yet, it became a roaring hit. Everyone out there remembers that deep-seated fear we all secretly had of Chuck-E-Cheese, knowing that something about those large, emotionless animatronics was just … not right.

FNAF knows how to prey upon our secret childhood fears, so audiences flocked to theaters and Peacock to watch the movie despite lackluster reviews. Not only did the film gross over $287 million at the box office, but it also became Peacock’s most-watched movie ever . Thanks to cult-favorite Matthew Lillard and a bunch of Easter eggs for fans of the franchise (including a few deep cuts), the movie knew how to draw viewers in, regardless of what critics thought. FNAF ended up becoming the highest-grossing horror movie of 2023, a distinction it deserved.

Like a demented horror take on Jumanji , a group of Black friends are forced to play a board game…or risk losing their lives. The game challenges them on their knowledge of Black culture and forces them to sacrifice someone when they get a question wrong. The Blackening is hilarious yet morbid and has a deeper story to tell about race and discrimination.

But like Get Out , the meaning isn’t heavy-handed like some children’s PBS special but is instead wrapped up in a deliciously fun and compelling plot. The movie asks who the real bad guys are and has some incredibly smart lines and great moments along the way.

Another successful sequel this year was Saw X , which actually takes place between Saw and Saw II . Both fans and critics loved the movie’s return to form, praising the return of Jigsaw and Amanda, and the film’s story-centric plot – reminding everyone that Saw movies can be more than just pointless gore and can actually have gripping storylines.

It’s not only one of the best horror movies of 2023, but it’s also one of the best Saw movies ever and earned a much-needed win for the franchise that many had thought died out years ago. Saw X also has some truly heinous and sadistic traps (True story: My roommate literally passed out when he watched the movie), so it’s perfect for gorehounds and anyone who misses the era of “torture porn” from the 2000s.

No One Will Save You features Dopesick actress Kaitlyn Dever, who has to escape an alien invasion and her own tragic past in this unique first-contact film . The movie starts off feeling more like a home invasion film, with Dever being chased around the house by an alien intruder. But by the end, it becomes clear that aliens have started taking over every human in her town and intend to conquer the world.

Making the movie even more memorable is the fact that it has virtually no dialogue, so the plot isn’t spoonfed to viewers, and it’s up to them to interpret it. No One Will Save You  can best be described as unusual – it doesn’t easily fit horror or sci-fi norms, and its vibe totally changes as the film plays on. But it captivates you and makes you want to keep watching, all the way to the shocking (and hilarious) ending.

Bruce Campbell returned to the franchise that made him famous (this time as Executive Producer) for Evil Dead Rise . In the standalone sequel, a family must escape their apartment after the Deadites return, bringing more blood, gore, and macabre. The movie received rave reviews, became a hit at the box office, and even stirred up some controversy at its SXSW premiere .

During a Q&A after the film, someone in the audience began screaming about how much they hated the movie, to which Campbell responded, “What are you doing here? Get the f*ck out of here.” The audience then erupted in cheers, and the incident went viral. Considering Evil Dead Rise ‘s 84% Rotten Tomatoes score and its $146 million box office haul, it seems the heckler’s opinion wasn’t shared by the rest of the public.

After premiering to rave reviews at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, Totally Killer  became an exclusive on Prime Video. In the movie, Julie Bowen ( Modern Family ) plays a mother who survived a serial killer 30 years ago. But after the killer somehow returns and murders her, her daughter decides to travel back to the 80s to prevent her mom’s death.

Complete with time travel and a campy 80s vibe, Totally Killer is a kitschy and witty movie that’s outlandish and funny while also being a genuinely smart and solid entry in the slasher subgenre. The movie also scored an impressive 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn’t easy for a straight-to-streaming horror film. But Totally Killer proved that sometimes the best movies aren’t found in cinemas.

After the Scream franchise returned with Scream V, complete with a new generation of stars that included Wednesday ‘s Jenna Ortega, 2023 saw another sequel, Scream VI . And in classic Scream style, it was bigger and wilder than its predecessor, this time placing Ghostface in New York City. The new setting worked flawlessly, and the movie was just as suspenseful and smart as ever.

The new cast continued to grow in their roles, delivering better performances than Scream V, and the movie even saw the return of Scream 4 fan-favorite Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere). Plus, new additions to the cast, like Jack Campion and Dermot Mulroney, fit the franchise’s vibe perfectly. Scream VI  went on to make over $168 million at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing Scream film since Scream 2 in 1997.

One of 2023’s biggest surprise hits was Talk to Me , an Australian film that put a unique twist on the classic “monkey’s paw” trope. In the movie, a mysterious severed hand gives people the power to communicate with the dead, but if the connection lasts too long, a spirit can possess the victim and cause carnage and mayhem.

Talk to Me had a very successful run in the film festival circuit, premiering to rave reviews at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival before heading to Sundance and SXSW in 2023. Everywhere the movie screened it received acclaim, eventually prompting a worldwide release. Made on a budget of just $4.5 million, Talk to Me ended up grossing almost $92 million in theaters, making it one of the highest-grossing horror movies of the year.

Talk to Me is the best horror movie of 2023 because it’s truly terrifying while also doubling as a great metaphor for familial trauma. This isn’t one of those critically-acclaimed “horror” movies that plays out more like a drama, though; it’s got some real scares, and, like all great horror movies, it leaves a lasting impression.

From atomic bombs (Oppenheimer, Asteroid City) to atomic blondes (Barbie, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour), 2023 was a year when cinema looked ahead by going back to the past. With reliable franchises like Marvel, DC, Indiana Jones, and Transformers failing and streaming still a question mark, the movie landscape expanded, allowing for a Hayao Miyazaki film about death to be the number one movie in America and for a three-hour movie filmed partly in black and white about nuclear physics to become a summertime critical and commercial smash.

It's a weird time for movies, but it was also a great year for films of all kinds: American ones, international ones, comedies, horror, sci-fi, dramas...heck, even a Godzilla movie (Godzilla Minus One) was excellent. I saw hundreds of movies this year, and to make a 10-best list this year was incredibly hard but always enjoyable. These are the 10 best movies of 2023. 10. The Killer

The best and worst new horror movies of 2023

  • 2023 was a major year for horror fans with the release of highly-anticipated movies like "Scream 6."
  • But other sequels, including the newest "Exorcist," didn't meet our expectations.
  • Here are seven of the best and seven of the worst new horror films.

Insider Today

A cheese grater used on human skin, a disembodied possessed hand, and a subway car full of people in Ghostface costumes — these fearsome sights and more filled our screens in 2023, which was one of the most interesting years for the horror genre to date.

While there were some truly stellar horror movies this year — "Talk to Me," "Totally Killer," and "When Evil Lurks," to name a few — there were also some disappointments as well. For instance, the latest film in the "Exorcist" franchise looked amazing from the trailer, but was a massive letdown in reality.

Here are seven of the best and seven of the worst horror movies released in 2023.

Best: "Evil Dead Rise"

film ghost 2023

Following up Sam Raimi's original "Evil Dead" movies is no easy feat, and yet Irish director Lee Cronin does it with ease in 2023's "Evil Dead Rise." The film follows Beth (Lily Sullivan) who visits her sister Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) and her kids in Los Angeles after some personal drama.

But it isn't long before the Necronomicon rears its ugly head, and transforms Ellie into a gleefully unhinged Deadite. Although this has all the hallmarks of Raimi's movies like buckets of gore, body horror, and perfectly timed jump scares, Cronin manages to put his own stamp on things.

The sequel breathes new life into the franchise by moving the horror from a secluded cabin to a claustrophobic apartment. It also operates on a deeper level by telling a story about the pressure of motherhood, which is a fascinating lens to view the franchise through.

With pulse-pounding performances from the cast and some razor-sharp scares, "Evil Dead Rise" is a bloody treat.

Best: "Talk to Me"

film ghost 2023

"Talk to Me" follows Mia, a grieving teenager who's encouraged by her friends to try a new high: getting possessed by dead spirits via a cursed hand, all while being recorded by their peers on smartphones.

Unsurprisingly, it's not a great idea to open your body to vengeful ghosts, and things take a terrible turn when Mia's friend's younger brother Riley becomes possessed after a turn with the hand.

"Talk to Me" features a refreshingly spooky story, a talented young cast, and a devastating ending that might not be for everyone, but certainly left an impression on us. In addition, the film's special effects — particularly during a scene in which Riley smashes his face to a pulp — are gory and memorable.

One of the most original horror films in recent years, "Talk to Me" is sure to keep you up at night. And fans of the film should definitely check out directors Danny and Michael Philippou's popular YouTube videos, which are equally as as meticulously plotted and flawlessly executed as "Talk to Me."

Best: "Scream 6"

film ghost 2023

With so many horror movies revolving around people in masks murdering teenagers, you'd be forgiven for thinking that "Scream 6" would be a dud. But Ghostface's most recent outing was a surprising treat.

It takes place one year after the events of 2022's "Scream," the fifth installment in the slasher franchise, as Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) has moved to New York with her sister, Tara (Jenna Ortega), and her friends as they go to college in the city. Unfortunately, a new Ghostface with a grisly appetite follows and starts hunting the gang through the streets.

The franchise has always taken a meta approach to the slasher genre, and "Scream 6" takes it one step further as Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown) waxes lyrical about the rules of being in a franchise movie. Everyone is both a potential victim, and a potential killer.

And although it doesn't reinvent the wheel, the movie is incredibly fun watching the killer slash their way across the city. Yes, it's basically "Ghostface Takes New York," and we're here for it.

Best: "When Evil Lurks"

film ghost 2023

"When Evil Lurks" might just be one of the most disturbingly original movies of the last few years, and shows that Argentinian director and writer Demián Rugna might be one of the most exciting creators in the genre.

The film follows two brothers, Pedro (Ezequiel Rodriguez) and Jaime (Demián Salomon), who grapple with an epidemic of demonic possessions near their home. It's set in a world which is familiar with demons, and the government even has plans in place to contain and destroy the "Rotten."

Pedro and Jaime scramble to save the people closest to them when the bureaucratic rules fail to protect the civilians, and the possessions start to spread. Rugna injects the film with an overwhelming sense of dread, largely because anyone, and anything, can potentially fall foul of the demons.

The world Rugna creates in itself is fascinating, but the fact that he's crafted a haunting story with a devastating ending is nothing short of masterful. And that's all without mentioning the buckets of gore that the director unleashes on the audience… Yikes.

Best: "Cobweb"

film ghost 2023

"Cobweb" is a mysterious little beast. It revolves around Peter (Woody Norman), a young boy who starts hearing voices inside the walls of his house. The voices warn him that his parents, Mark (Antony Starr) and Carol (Lizzy Caplan) are not what they seem.

This paranoid horror-thriller touches on some fascinating themes of nature vs. nurture, and it's great to see Starr flex his horror muscles away from Homelander and "The Boys."

He dials up the creep factor here in some surprising ways, but the dynamic between Peter and the voice (Debra Wilson) is the real draw here.

Writer Chris Thomas Devlin adds a new twist on a typical monster trope, and while the film itself isn't groundbreaking, it's an effective story. And with a tight 88-minute long runtime, it's a perfect Saturday night movie.

Best: "No One Will Save You"

film ghost 2023

Few horror movies have been able to pull off the gimmick of having next-to-no dialogue in their story. And the ones that do, like "Hush" or "A Quiet Place," have set the bar quite high. So it's surprising, then, that Hulu's "No One Will Save You" manages to keep audiences gripped for its 93-minute runtime.

The movie stars Kaitlyn Dever as Brynn, a young woman who lives alone in a small town and is struggling to get over the trauma of her best friend's death. When aliens descend on the town, Brynn tries to out-maneuver the extraterrestrials inside her home.

It's a simple story that doesn't try to overcomplicate things with big, bombastic set pieces. But when writer-director Brian Duffield chooses to ramp the action up, it's a pulse-pounding experience.

The ending might be a little underwhelming depending on how much audiences get out of Brynn's character. But "No One Will Save You" is an impressive adventure with B-movie vibes.

Best: "Infinity Pool"

film ghost 2023

Director Brandon Cronenberg — much like his father, the legendary David Cronenberg — knows how to deliver fascinating science-fiction horror. "Infinity Pool" takes audiences to the fictional country of Li Tolqa, where writer James (Alexander Skarsgård) discovers a bizarre punishment for anyone caught committing serious crimes.

For a huge fee, the criminal can pay to be cloned and have their sentence inflicted upon their duplicate self. And after accidentally killing a local with his car, James opts to go through the procedure himself instead of facing punishment.

It's a bizarre look at the loss of self, morality, and responsibility. Cronenberg offers the audience a deep question: Would they also follow James' path if they could get away with murder? Or does the rising body count of clones only make things worse?

It's a gripping story, with top notch performances from Skarsgård and Mia Goth.

Best: "Totally Killer"

film ghost 2023

Horror fans have devoured countless slasher movies over the decades, and it's difficult to make them really standout from the masked crowd. But throw in a time-travel plot with a self-aware streak, and "Totally Killer" is a plucky addition to the genre.

It follows Jamie (Kiernan Shipka), whose mother survived a masked killer in the 1980s only to be killed in the present day by someone in the same mask.

Jamie uses a time machine built by her friend to try and stop her mother from being killed, with surprising consequences. Think "Back to the Future" meets "Scream."

"Mad Men" and "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" star Kiernan Shipka carries the film with ease, and she clearly has a lot of fun with the fish-out-of-water trope. This hugely enjoyable flick doesn't completely reinvent the slasher movie, but it keeps audiences hooked regardless. Sequel, please!

Worst: "The Nun II"

film ghost 2023

The fact that "The Nun II" isn't called "The Nun II: Back in the Habit" is the sequel's first offense. The second? Being painfully boring. It's another spinoff from "The Conjuring" series, which are some of the creepiest movies of the last decade thanks to their numerous jump scares.

But "The Nun II" is just a bland, typical sequel. Anyone who's ever seen a horror movie will be able to spot the annoyingly predictable jump scares coming from a mile away.

It's a shame, because leading star Taissa Farmiga does the best she can with an underwhelming script, but the "American Horror Story" alum deserves better. The power of Christ doesn't compel "The Nun II," that's for sure.

Worst: "Insidious: The Red Door"

film ghost 2023

We love Patrick Wilson's work in "The Conjuring" franchise, and support his transition to directing wholeheartedly. But even though Wilson clearly tried his hardest, "Insidious: The Red Door" just doesn't cut it for us.

For starters, did we really need another "Insidious" film? The franchise has had some interesting moments, but overall, the films have gradually declined in quality. And "Insidious: The Red Door" doesn't even dive deep into the mythology of the universe, including the origins of the Lipstick-Face Demon, which feels like a wasted opportunity.

Overall, this final installment in the "Insidious" franchise is a bit of a letdown — it's not even that scary, which, for a horror movie, is pretty important.

Worst: "Pet Sematary: Bloodlines"

film ghost 2023

It was ambitious of "Pet Sematary: Bloodlines" to try and give some context to Stephen King's terrifying original story, but the film ultimately fails in both its quest to build out the "Pet Sematary" universe, and in being actually scary.

The movie has promise and a not-uninteresting premise. But overall, it seems to be banking on its association with King and the original horror movie, and not the actual merits of its own plot and jump scares.

Worst: "Nefarious"

film ghost 2023

"Nefarious" revolves around psychiatrist Dr. James Martin (Jordan Belfi) who is tasked with discerning whether Edward Wayne Brady (Sean Patrick Flanery), a death row inmate who has murdered 11 people, is sane or not.

The problem is that Brady claims to be possessed by a demon called Nefarious. Yes, Martin has to figure out whether Brady is possessed or not. It's effectively "The Exorcist" or "The Conjuring" through a crime drama lens, and it doesn't work at all.

The paint-by-numbers plot makes its 97-minute runtime feel much longer, and it's only mildly kept afloat by Flanery's performance. It attempts to say something meaningful about religion and a crisis of faith, but there's nothing below the surface.

Worst: "Children of the Corn"

film ghost 2023

This adaptation of "Children of the Corn," first produced in 2020 before getting a delayed release this year, proves that not everything needs a remake — particularly a Stephen King story that's already been dramatized countless times.

The story of "Children of the Corn" (about a cult of kids who murder all the adults in their town) is interesting enough, and could be a vehicle for an incisive modern remake. However, this adaptation wasn't it — it tries to be topical, but doesn't explore the issues it raises in depth, and the exposition at the end both comes too late and falls flat.

Overall, this version of "Children of the Corn" was a completely unnecessary and very disappointing remake.

Worst: "Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey"

film ghost 2023

When Winnie the Pooh and all of his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood entered the public domain, the last thing anyone was expecting was a gritty, horror reimagining from British director, Rhys Frake-Waterfield.

The idea is simple: Winnie and the gang are heartbroken by Christopher Robin (Nikolai Leon) leaving them behind to grow up. And to vent their frustrations when he returns, Winnie and Piglet go on a killing spree. Lovely!

While this could've been something pretty fun, it's surprisingly dull. Sure, the kills are gratuitously violent, but the shock factor of seeing characters from a children's book slaughtering people wears off pretty quickly. It's an interesting idea, but poorly executed. And the less we say about the performances, the better.

Suffice it to say, we will not be eagerly awaiting the planned sequel .

Worst: "The Exorcist: Believer"

film ghost 2023

Despite guest appearances from Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair , who both famously starred in the original "Exorcist" film, the newest addition to the franchise lacks the pure terror that made the original so compelling.

Instead, "The Exorcist: Believer" revisits similar tropes from the 1973 original, and doesn't add anything new to our understanding of the demonic possessions central to the franchise, despite a major twist at the ending. (One that's pretty obvious from the beginning, if we're being honest.)

We Have a Ghost was announced to be in production in July 2021 with Christopher Landon to write and direct the film. It is based on Geoff Manaugh's 2017 short story, "Ernest". The cast includes, Anthony Mackie, David Harbour, Jahi Di’Allo Winston, Tig Notaro, Jennifer Coolidge, Erica Ash, Niles Fitch, Isabella Russo, Faith Ford and Steve Coulter. Harbour plays the ghost Ernest. He was Landon's first choice for the role, telling Entertainment Weekly, "I knew that the role was incredibly challenging because there's no dialog, so he just has to do so much with so little. We had a meeting, and he told me he was terrified of doing it, which I thought was great because it shows that he was feeling vulnerable and intrigued and excited. By the end of our meeting, I think we both felt really strongly that it was a good match".

Principal photography began in August 2021 in Donaldsonville and New Orleans. A few weeks into filming production was halted because of the landfall of Hurricane Ida in Louisiana. Production resumed October to finish filming scenes in the Ascension Parish west bank city.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Did you know

  • Trivia The working title for this film was "Firehouse" after the Ghostbusters firehouse. In previous films, the exterior shots of the firehouse were filmed at Hook & Ladder 8 in the Tribeca (Triangle Below Canal Street) neighborhood of Lower Manhattan in New York City. After filming was finished on Ghostbusters II (1989) , the firehouse kept half of the Ghostbusters II sign that hung outside. It was regularly displayed on holidays, particularly Halloween. Eventually, it was permanently moved inside, after a successful GoFundMe campaign by fans of the movie in June 2021, which funded a full-scale replica of the Ghostbusters sign. This sign now hangs outside of the firehouse year-round. The GoFundMe campaign is now an annual fundraiser for the firehouse and a celebration is held there on Ghostbusters Day (8th June, marking the American release of Ghostbusters (1984) ) each year.

TORONTO, ON - SEPTEMBER 11: Actor Tom Wilkinson attends the "Denial" premiere during the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival at Princess of Wales Theatre on September 11, 2016 in Toronto, Canada. (Photo by Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images)

Tom Wilkinson , the British actor who appeared in films including “The Full Monty,” “Shakespeare in Love” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” died Saturday in the U.K., the BBC reported . He was 75.

“It is with great sadness that the family of Tom Wilkinson announce that he died suddenly at home on December 30. His wife and family were with him,” the statement from his family to the BBC read.

Wilkinson was Oscar-nominated for his roles in “Michael Clayton,” in which he played an attorney who has a manic episode; and Todd Field’s “In the Bedroom,” as the doctor husband to Sissy Spacek’s character.

Variety ‘s Todd McCarthy wrote about his “In the Bedroom” role in a 2001 review, saying, “In an about-face from his fine turn as the arrogant Gen. Cornwallis in ‘The Patriot,’ Wilkinson gives enormously sympathetic shadings to Matt, who comes off as an ideal father and quite a good husband, Ruth’s later objections notwithstanding; it’s a large, warm-blooded performance.”

George Clooney, who starred with Wilkinson in the intense 2007 drama “Michael Clayton,” directed by Tony Gilroy, was quick to praise the actor, calling him “the epitome of elegance” and skilled as a thespian.

“Tom made every project better. Made every actor better,” Clooney told Variety . “He was the epitome of elegance and he will be dearly missed by all of us.”

Wilkinson also appeared in films such as “Rush Hour,” in which he played the evil British ambassador, and “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” He also had roles in “The Green Hornet,” “Batman Begins,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.”

On television, he played Benjamin Franklin in “John Adams,” James A. Baker in “Recount,” for which he was Emmy-nominated and Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. in “The Kennedys.”

He once again played a historical American in Ava DuVernay’s feature “Selma.”

Born Yorkshire, Wilkinson attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and then began acting on TV in programs including “Martin Chuzzlewit,” with a small part in “Sense and Sensibility” in 1995.

Ryan Gosling looks comic book-accurate as Ghost Rider in striking Marvel Cinematic Universe fan art. Rumors have begun swirling that Gosling is in talks with Marvel Studios to join the MCU. Gosling would be a great addition to the upcoming Marvel movies , with the versatile actor being able to play either a villain or a hero well. In the past, Gosling said he would love to play Ghost Rider , and new MCU fan art has imagined what he would look like as the character.

On Instagram, artist @21xfour shared a fiery concept art of Gosling as the MCU's Ghost Rider.

The art depicts Gosling as the Johnny Blaze version of Ghost Rider, with the actor appearing in street clothes while lighting up on fire and also fully transformed as Ghost Rider. With the MCU's supernatural corner set to be opened up in a huge way through Marvel's Blade movie, Ghost Rider could debut in the near future, though Gosling could also play other characters in the MCU's Phase 6 .

Every Marvel Cinematic Universe Movie Ranked Worst To Best

Which mcu characters ryan gosling could play, gosling would be great as multiple marvel characters.

While Gosling's favorite MCU role might be Ghost Rider, the actor possesses the acting chops to play several high-profile characters that should be coming to the MCU in the near future. Marvel Studios is developing a Nova series , and the actor has been rumored as the favorite to play Richard Rider in the MCU. However, Gosling debunked the Nova rumors at the time he expressed his desire to play Ghost Rider.

With the recent firing of Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror and the new rumor that Gosling is in talks with Marvel coinciding, the actor could possibly become the MCU's new Big Bad. If Marvel chooses to recast Kang for the rest of the Multiverse Saga, the MCU is likely going to opt for multiple actors as Kang variants rather than having the Multiverse Saga hang on a person's shoulders again. Gosling has the necessary gravitas to play Kang the Conqueror or another important variant of the character, perhaps with the MCU making the Beyonder a Kang variant, which Gosling would be pitch-perfect for.

Marvel's Fantastic Four film is a hot commodity in Hollywood these days, with the anticipated MCU movie set to go before cameras early in 2024 but having no actors attached to it so far. If Pedro Pascal's reported casting as Reed Richards does not pan out, then Gosling could bring a charismatic and nuanced performance as Mister Fantastic. Likewise, Gosling would also be a great choice for the Fantastic Four's most famous villain, Doctor Doom, with Gosling being able to finally bring Doom's complexity accurately to the big screen. It remains to be seen if the Ryan Gosling MCU rumors are true.
