20 Haunted Houses and Attractions That Are Actually Open This Year

Haunted House

Haunted House

While the coronavirus has upended much of 2020 , Halloween lovers need not despair. Though traditional trick-or-treating outings may not take place in many places, there are still plenty of haunted houses and spooky attractions open across the country this year — albeit with some social distancing measures in place. Here’s a look at some of the places you can still experience a good old-fashioned scare. (Just in case the year’s events haven’t been scary enough for you.)

Haunted House

Skeleton’s Lair Scream Park

Bowling Green, Kentucky One of the largest haunted happenings in south-central Kentucky, Skeleton’s Lair Scream Park  takes visitors through haunted woods, a two-story haunted house, and a haunted maze. If all of that is not enough, this year the attraction debuts “Krampus, A Holiday Horror Story,” complete with Santa Claws spreading holiday fear. Price: $32

The 13th Gate

The 13th Gate

Baton Rouge, Louisiana Billed as one of America’s scariest Halloween attractions by The Travel Channel and as one of the top haunted houses across America by AOLCityguide, The 13th Gate  promises 13 nightmare realms with “extreme ultra-realism,” describing itself as one of the most detailed haunted houses in existence, with a level of design and effects as realistic as a Hollywood movie. (You may not want to bring the kids.) Features include a lifelike pirate ship, hidden subterranean passes filled with snakes and a zombie-infested graveyard. Price:  General admission is $30, and VIP access is $60. Visitors will have their temperatures checked and must wear masks.

Red Vein Haunted House

Red Vein Haunted House

Richmond, Virginia An indoor-outdoor haunted attraction, Red Vein Haunted House  combines an immersive storyline, realistic sets, and extreme scares. Price: $20 to $40. All customers, cast, and crew are required to wear masks, and ticket sales are at 50% normal occupancy to allow for social distancing.

The Haunted Road Drive-Thru Halloween Experience

The Haunted Road Drive-Thru Halloween Experience

Orlando, Florida The Haunted Road  promises twisted creatures, immersive theatrical storytelling, and bloodcurdling encounters — all from the comfort of the cars visitors park at each scene — following Rapunzel's journey as she leaves her tower for the first time and enters a world of disarray. Price: $15 to $20. Tickets are still available for the tamer, family-friendly, daytime version of this event. Additional nighttime dates may be made available.

Dead Man's Farm

Dead Man’s Farm

Loudon County, Tennessee Clowns of the Corn and Bludgeon House are just some of the frightening attractions at Dead Man’s Farm . There’s a walk-through haunted house and three mini “Horror Escape Rooms,” and a coffin simulator called Buried Alive. Price: $15 to $30. This spooky attraction promises to be terrifyingly safe, with COVID-19 measures that include staff temperature checks and mask requirements, and timed ticketing to reduce crowds.

Haunted House

Helheim Haunted Attraction

Wytheville, Virginia Housed in an old, 6,000-square-foot amusement park, Helheim Haunted Attraction  promises to “put the evil in Wytheville.” The horrors feature a post-apocalyptic viking theme. When Haunted Houses Open

Many of the nation’s scariest haunted houses remain open all year, from Halloween through special holidays like Christmas, Valentine’s Day and St Patrick’s Day or Friday the 13th.

If you want to visit a haunted house, make sure that it is on an off-peak day of the week; that way it will be less crowded and your chances of scaring are higher!

Halloween Season

At Halloween time, visiting haunted houses can be both thrilling and terrifying – the ideal opportunity to indulge your darkest fears! There will be plenty of bloodshed to enjoy during your visit.

The Bedlam Institute offers an interactive choose your own adventure of horror in the ruins of an occultist Doctor’s seminary where they tortured and disfigured unwilling patients. At this year’s event, guests will come face-to-face with terrifying spirits of those victims that will stop at nothing to exact revenge on those responsible.

This home haunt is open Fridays and Saturdays throughout October for visitors of all ages to experience terrifying corridors, dark graveyards, and demonic entities in order to escape them. Donations will be accepted for autism and cerebral palsy organizations.

Christmas Season

Christmas can be an unnerving time, which is why so many haunted houses open during this holiday season – even some that remain open year-round!

Creamy Acres Farm hosts the Night of Terror for those who love being scared; featuring zombies, killer clowns and other terrifying sights such as haunted paintball hayrides with mounted zombie paintball guns for guests to shoot at while riding in wagons with them.

Brighton Asylum is a horror complex featured on The Today Show, Cake Boss and Buzzfeed that provides walk-through experiences featuring Hollywood-quality special effects and live actors. They are open Friday-Saturday nights in October plus certain Sunday nights.

The 13th Hour is an eerie three-story haunted house that offers guests an exhilarating three-floor experience. Additionally, two pitch-black outdoor mazes and an engaging 60-minute escape room provide visitors with even more thrills and chills.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day marks a momentous observance in honor of St. Valentine, celebrated each February 14th. Originating as Roman holiday Lupercalia celebrated in February, some believe the church converted this feast day to Valentine’s Day as an attempt at Christianizing love and affection celebration. Nowadays, this day is known for sending cards and gifting sweets.

Brighton Asylum of Long Island — which has been featured on The Today Show, Cake Boss, and Buzzfeed — returns this October with more thrills for visitors. Featuring an unnerving walk-through haunted asylum with live actors performing within it and Hollywood quality special effects; Brighton Asylum will be open Friday through Sunday nights from October. For more information visit their website.

St. Patrick’s Day

On St. Patrick’s Day, you may not witness green rivers or attend parades — however there are still ways you can honor the Irish — including visiting haunted houses!

This haunted house offers multiple visits during October, with tickets beginning at just $30 for admission and VIP passes also being made available.

Smithville, Texas attraction just southeast of Austin hosts its Summer Monster Bash each June 11-12-18-19-25 and 26. New this year is Hell on Wheels – an interactive hayride attraction! Recommended for those aged 16 years and up due to strong language and graphic content that may not be appropriate for children; not recommended for those suffering from darkness phobia or claustrophobia.

As Halloween events across the country unfold, their purpose is clear. From exploring abandoned mental facilities to encountering cannibalistic serial killers – nothing beats celebrating this season than venturing through haunted houses!

Terror Haunt is an all-new experience located within The Bedlam Institute and promises an unforgettable ride through its fictional ruins, where possessed patients await visitors. For those wanting a lower fear level experience, a Low Fear Upgrade option may be chosen, while those wanting an adrenaline rush should choose an Extreme Terror upgrade instead.

With three floors of horror (including a basement), two pitch-black outdoor mazes, and over 20 actors ready to jump out at you at any given moment, this haunted house will definitely put the fear in you! Open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night throughout October.

What are the Best Dates to Visit Universal Studios Orlando Halloween Horror Nights?

The Orlando Halloween Horror Nights are some of the biggest events to happen in Central Florida. That means, it can get extremely busy if you go on the wrong days. If you’ve wanted to go on less crowded days for Horror Nights 2024, we would suggest going earlier rather than later.

What are the best nights to go to Halloween Horror Nights?

  • September: 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22, 24, 27, 28

Based on what we know about Halloween horror nights so far, the best nights to visit tend to be weekdays during the first two weeks which will be between September 3rd – September 17th.

Moderately Crowded Nights for Halloween Horror Nights:

  • September 1, 2, 3, 16, 23, 30
  • October 6, 7, 8, 14, 21, 31

Moderately crowded nights tend the be the weekdays leading up until Columbus Day weekend in October which will be September 16th until October 8th.

Very Crowded Nights for Halloween Horror Nights:

  • October 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31

Over all the least crowded HHN 2024  days consistently fall during the first two weeks. Given the popularity of Halloween Horror Nights, it can be challenging to find a slow night. However, Wednesdays and Thursdays will typically draw lower crowds. Most locals visit on Friday and Saturday nights, so one of the best Halloween Horror Nights tips is to avoid those nights. Guests can also take advantage of Halloween Horror Nights Early entry to get a head start on crowded nights!

If you’re in the process of planning your Universal Orlando vacation and are still unsure when is the best time to visit, check out our Halloween Horror Nights Crowd Calendar . The Best Universal Orlando Hotels for Halloween Horror Nights 2024

are haunted houses open during the week

There are a few factors to consider when picking a Universal Orlando hotel for Halloween Horror nights . However, we find that the most important ones are the location of the hotel and of course the price. The great news is Universal has hotel options for every family’s needs and budget. However, based on Halloween Horror nights alone here are our suggestions.

What are the best hotels for Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights 2024?

  • Hard Rock Hotel
  • Endless Summer Resort

Visiting HHN 2024 Based on Location:

Our favorite resort when visiting Halloween Horror Nights is the Universal Hard Rock resort. The main reason is this is the only Universal Orlando Resort that is within walking distance of Universal Studios. We find this to be very convenient. It’s also important to note that guests will also receive free Universal Express passes, which is a great way to get a lot done in a short amount of time.

Visiting HHN 2024 Based on Budget:

One of the coolest things about staying at Universal Orlando Resort is the free transportation to and from the theme parks. So if the convenience of walking to Universal Studios isn’t the most important thing, we suggest staying at Universal’s Endless Summer resort. We recently stayed at this hotel and found it to be such a good value when looking at all of the additional amenities. Be sure to check out our complete room review at Universal’s Endless Summer Resort!

This HHN House is inspired by Universal Pictures’ upcoming horror film from Blumhouse and Morgan Creek Entertainment. Two 12-year-old girls in the U.S. disappear and are found three days later with no memory of what happened to them. There are a few different ways to enter this special event but the most important thing to keep in mind is the security and new safety procedures. We are still waiting to see how the newest safety procedures will be implemented for this years event.

Here are the different options for guests entering HHN:

  • Guests spending the day at Universal Studios and purchasing a ticket for HHN that evening
  • Guests purchasing the Stay and Scream Ticket
  • Those arriving at 6:30 for regular entry

Halloween Horror Nights Express Pass

are haunted houses open during the week

If you’re trying to hit every stop on the Halloween Horror Nights map, including all ten haunted houses, we highly recommend the Halloween Horror Nights express pass . Just like the regular Universal Express pass , guests will be able to skip the regular standby line and jump onto a shorter line. With this pass, you’ll find much more time in the night to peruse the event and get yourself all the Halloween Horror Nights food menu items and Halloween Horror Nights merch that have been haunting your dreams.

*Due to the popularity of some haunted houses, your wait can still be over an hour, especially on the weekends.

Your Halloween Horror Nights tickets fast pass will allow you to skip the lines on the regular rides and mazes that are open. The Halloween Horror Nights fast pass allows you entry to each haunted house, attraction, and maze one time per night.

Halloween Horror Nights Express Passes do sell out, especially on peak nights. We recommend purchasing your express pass ASAP. Ask us about a Halloween Horror Nights express pass discount and Halloween Horror Nights group tickets .

2024 Halloween Horror Nights Unlimited Express Pass

Guests will receive all of the benefits as the HHN Express pass, but they can experience all attractions as many times as they want. Universal released a very limited amount of these passes last year for each event night. You can only purchase these passes in person at the front gate in the park.

Our Halloween Horror Nights express pass review ? Highly recommended, but given the increased Halloween Horror Nights wait times we don’t see the benefit of having an unlimited pass…unless you only have your heart set on one specific haunted house.

Halloween Horror Nights Early Entry: Scream Early Ticket

If you are trying to accomplish everything on the Universal Halloween Horror nights park map , arrive as early as you can. The easiest way to beat the long lines is to take advantage of the Scream Early Ticket —the best option for guests who don’t have an annual pass ( Halloween Horror Nights annual pass discount , anyone?) and also do not want to purchase a full price one day ticket.

95. Folklore Haunted House

Folklore Haunted House

Location:  Acworth, Georgia

"We came from Louisville, Kentucky, on our way to Gainesville. Upon Googling "best haunted house in Georgia," we were recommended to Folklore Haunted House, and man ... we are glad we came! [It was] $27 for three haunts and worth every penny. The detail that went into decorating each area, the craftsmanship in creating a unique environment for each character, and a group of actors who really give their all ... this was a great decision! The owner, upon learning we had come down from Waverly Hills, where we work, even came by to say hey. A great crew makes a good haunt unforgettable, and Folklore was certainly that!" — Jay R. , Louisville, Kentucky

94. The Fear Complex Haunted House

Haunted Mines Colorado

Location:  Colorado Springs, Colorado

"This was an awesome haunted house! You definitely get your money's worth out of the whole experience that lasted about 45 minutes. The costumes were fabulous; the special effects were truly haunting. The makeup on the characters was eerie. At one point, we had to dawn 3-D glasses!!!! Whoever created this haunted house definitely had some really cool nightmares; take your family, take your friends!" — Lona T. , Colorado Springs, Colorado

93. Creepy Hollow Haunted House

Creepy Hollow Haunted House

Location:  Rosaron, Texas

"WOW! I literally just made a Yelp account to write this review. I was blown away, not only by the amazing effects and actors but by the amazing staff! They made the experience so much more fun. We came pretty late and they didn't at all rush us to leave, and we shared a lot of laughs.

"I've been to my fair share of haunted houses, and this one exceeded my expectations. Probably the best in Houston! I 100,000 percent recommend going. Prices are super fair, and the scares are unbeatable. I peed my pants, and I have absolutely no regrets. If you can only visit one haunt this year, please please please go here! Also, it's a huge bonus that they donate a lot to charity." — Addison D. , Richmond, Texas

92. Rise Haunted House

RISE Hounted House

Located:  Tickfaw, Louisiana

"I think I just went to the best haunted house(s) of my life!! #hauntedhayride #asylum — we did it all!! It's an hour from New Orleans, North of Mandeville — which makes it scary enough (LOL) — but it was amazing and worth the drive. Definitely do all three options if you can (Haunted House, Asylum and the Haunted Hayride)." — Amita R. , New Orleans, Louisiana

91. Fear Factory

Fear Factory Utah

Location:  Salt Lake City, Utah

"Super fun times with options for all! This is a huge closed-down factory turned into a haunted house. Pretty amazing. There were like four to five flights of stairs that anyone with difficulties might want to consider. Quite a few different themes throughout. Really enjoyed the smoky and lighting effects (epileptics beware). At one point, you're around five stories up on some grates with seethrough floors. Good fun all around." — Scott H. , Salt Lake City, Utah

90. HellsGate Haunted House

HellsGate Haunted House

Location:  Lockport, Illinois

"Loved this place! I went here with a group of friends, and we had a blast. It was very cool walking through the forest to the haunted house. Actors interacted with us and made funny comments. You can tell so much work was put into the facility. I have had many poor haunted house experiences, but HellsGate definitely wasn't one of them. The detail put into the mansion was unbelievable! The different rooms were very cool and spooky. In my past haunted house experiences, I haven't gotten scared, but the actors at HellsGate scared me quite a few times. The staff was very friendly and polite to us. I completely recommend HellsGate!" — Vincent F. , Illinois

89. Factory of Terror

Factory of Terror Ohio

Location: Canton, Ohio

"Awesome! Excellent actors and special effects! So many surprises here! Very well organized. Highly recommend buying your tics online so you won't have to wait in line at the ticket window. We bought online and were glad we did. In my opinion, it's the best haunted attraction in the area. Loved the mechanical creatures, theatrical performances of actors and special effects. If you don't have a lot of time, buy the fast pass. You will be able to get through in just over an hour on a Sunday night." — Lisa C ., Akron, Ohio

88. A Petrified Forest

A Petrified Forest Florida

Location:  Altamore Springs, Florida

"Come here every year, and the haunted houses are just so amazing. I've been to Halloween Horror Nights so many times, and A Petrified Forest totally beats all of those attractions (in my opinion). The haunted houses are long (five to seven minutes inside), the actors are REALLY good, the special effects are top-notch, and the layout of the houses is just unbeatable. I always end up losing my voice from the amount of screaming I do!" — Jenna L. , Orlando, Florida

87. The Haunted Trail of Balboa Park

The Haunted Trail of Balboa Park

Location: San Diego, California

"I would 100 percent do this again or recommend to anyone looking for some Halloween fun. It's scary, won't lie. I screamed until I lost my voice. It's about a mile long so it's about 20 to 30 minutes of going through rooms with different themes, one of which was a real school bus, which I thought was super clever!

The characters don't touch you but they get pretty close; they can accidentally bump you, but they never touched a single one of us from our group. They send you out through the trail in groups of 20 or so, but it gets bunched up at times; makes sense when people are stopping cause they're scared." — Salina A. , El Cajon, California

86. Woods of Terror

Woods of Terror in North Carolina

Location:  Greensboro, North Carolina

"Once you get on the trail, it takes about an hour to walk through! By far the longest haunted trail I have ever been to. There are about six haunted houses, two pitch black mazes and the corn maze. Let me tell you the detail that goes into this thing is pretty extraordinary. The best way to describe it is the Disney World of horror places. They really think of everything. My favorites were the 3-D circus, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre house and the multi-horror movie area. The Pirate Ship was pretty awesome as well." — Holly K. , Raleigh, North Carolina

85. Hobb's Grove Halloween Haunt

Hobb's Grove Halloween Haunt

Location:  Sanger, California

"It's the Disneyland of haunts as far as quality. But it's seemingly a low-budget transformation. You drive way into the middle of nowhere and park in a dark lot. There's no grand archway entrance. Just the overall scary environment. They never copy movie stuff. You'll see no Freddy  Kruger here. The line waits are super long on busy nights, but they have characters working the lines. The actors never come out of character so you're transformed into another place. Not all line characters are scary — a few are hilarious!" — Stephen M. , Fresno, California

84. Pennhurst Asylum

Pennhurst Asylum

Location:  Spring City, Pennsylvania

"We just survived Pennhurst! My heart is still racing! The owners, operators, staff and actors are amazing, (Especially Frank!) The entire production was completely redone for 2022. If you thought you were scared in years past, you'll definitely wanna come back this year. It was by far better than I could have ever imagined. I recommend doing all three attractions." — Christina S. , San Francisco, California

83. Howl-O-Scream

Howl-O-Scream in Busch Gardens

Location:  Tampa, Florida

"There was barely any line traffic, and the staff did a great job with splitting groups so everyone can get the scares. There is no line traffic at all and theme-wise it's pretty good! The scare zones are also AMAZING, so interactive and the actors did a really good job. Food and drinks were great, not very hard liquor, but I prefer it that way for theme parks. As for shows, the show with the host of Howl-O-Scream was pretty cheesy and didn't put much effort into special effects. The best shows to watch are cirque x scream and the rolling bones! And there is a bar with food at the Rolling Bones show! Definitely planning on coming next year!" — Juliet D. , Miami, Florida

82. Halloween Horror Nights

Halloween Horror Nights It character

Location:  Orlando, Florida

"Halloween Horror Nights is clearly the world-class Halloween theme park event worldwide. Universal Studios has access to classic IP horror properties such as Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Universal Monsters and so much more that rotate every year — the houses for these are extremely detailed and are like you're walking into the movie/tv sets themselves." — Frank L. , Mount Prospect, Illinois

81. Warehouse 31

Warehouse 31

Location: Pelham, Alabama

"If you like haunted houses, Warehouse 31 is a must see! This thing is huge, elaborate and has amazing actors! From the creepy guy that greets you as you enter, the little girl with the Raggedy Ann dolls, the crazy nurse and finally the freak jumping out when you are in the mine, this place was full of jump scares and overall weirdness! They also have cool 3D effects, karaoke, a bar, food trucks, an escape room and more! This is haunted house perfection!" — April R. , Homewood, Alabama

80. The Darkness

The Darkness

Location: Saint Louis, Missouri

"Is it possible to be addicted to a haunted house?? I think yes! I go here every year, sometimes multiple times. They change it up each year, so it never gets dull. They have fantastic actors that you see from the time you enter the parking lot as well as very high-tech animatronics. Scary Gary and Steve are by far the best. I get a picture with them every year. They also have escape rooms and a little museum and gift shop." — Gabrielle J. , Breckenridge Hills, Missouri

79. Nashville Nightmare

Nashville Nightmare

Location: Madison, Tennessee

"YOU GUYS!! This was hands down the best haunted attraction experience I have ever had! YukYuk the clown was especially friendly and helpful while simultaneously being scary  The music, lights, and actors kept us entertained while we waited for the rest of our group to arrive My bf and an alien were "communicating" at one point. It was hilarious...There were a variety of themed walk-throughs that were actually scary and excellently decorated." — Beth-Leah S. , Tennessee

78. Bennett's Curse

Bennett's Curse

Location: Baltimore, Maryland

"Our sixth year coming to Bennett's Curse (except the year that Baltimore City dropped the ball) and this was the best yet. There were more actors than ever and the new laser/smoke room is awesome.  The actors in the sanitarium were outstanding and really scared the h*ll out of my wife.  Great time was had by all and we will be back next year." — Robert E. , Severna, Maryland

77. The Haunted Mortuary

The Haunted Mortuary

Location: New Orleans, Louisiana

"This was the best Laser Tag Haunted House ever! You heard me right. Laser tag in a haunted house. The mortuary converted an old asylum into a haunted house for both Halloween and Christmas... We went to the Christmas one to shoot evil elves and Krampus. Soooo much fun!!... Well worth the money for a new adventure." — Dacia Z. , Wilmington, North Carolina

76. Barrett's Haunted Mansion

Barrett's Haunted Mansion

Also the attractions were phenomenal and very detail oriented. They put so much effort into this and made my night. Definitely recommend best haunted house ever!!!" — Alexis J. , Massachusetts

75. The Devils Attic

The Devils Attic

Location: Louisville, Kentucky

"This is probably one of the best and well-thought-out haunted houses I've been to. From the moment you step out of the car, you begin to be immersed into cinematic horror. While you wait in line, some scare actors are present, getting you into the mood for this haunted attraction. Also, they are projecting some old horror movie clips, as well as some weird unusual clips. This house rolls with the punches one after the other, putting you right in the middle of some of the best and most iconic horror films of all time." — Abbey B. , Lexington, Kentucky

74. Sanctum of Horror

Sanctum of Horror

Location: Mesa, Arizona

It was great last year, and they've improved quite a few things that made it even better this year." — Michelle M. , Jackson, Mississippi

73. The Stanley Hotel

The Stanley Hotel

Location: Estes Park, Colorado

"I highly recommend this tour for anyone who is into the paranormal. Our tour guide, Ian, was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the hotel, as well as its ghoulish friends. He was entertaining and friendly, and provided a one of kind experience. The tour takes you through all of the common areas, and you even get to test if the spirits are with you (we had an encounter, and it was wild)." —Linsey M.

72. Into the Dark Terror Vault

Into the dark

Location: San Francisco, California

"Hands-down, no contest the best haunted house I have ever been to. I've been here 3 years in a row, and the changes they make every year truly justify coming again and again. The performers all put so much work into their various crafts, you're always treated with respect, and you really can tell how invested everyone here is in ensuring you have an amazing time. You can opt for a glow necklace that tells performers they're allowed to touch you — they may grab you or jostle you gently, smell you, even spank you or paint your skin! You can of course opt out, and they'll always be respectful of that, too. Tickets could cost twice as much as they do, and I'd still jump to buy them every year." — Kyle W. , Fremont, California

71. Milburn's Haunted Manor

Milburn's Haunted Manor

Location: Hubbard, Oregon

"The BEST, most terrifying haunted house that I have been to. Brilliantly conceived with two distinctly different haunts, this experience is well worth the trip from Portland. The drive there set the stage with the site being a very dark, isolated area. As you drive there, you pass a nearby cemetary and, then, you see the parking lot lights...and hear screams." — Jerald B. , Tualatin, Oregon

70. Haunted Overload

Haunted Overload

Location: Lee, New Hampshire

"One of the best Halloween experiences of my life. I am a bit of an enthusiast for these types of things. The art and creativity of Haunted Overload is second to none. 69. Reign of Terror Haunted House

Reign of Terror Haunted House

Location: Thousand Oaks, California

The maze has left a lasting impression on me like a reoccurring nightmare that shakes you to the core. Another review stated that Universal Horror Nights should take notes and agree 100 percent." — Joey S. , West Hollywood, California

66. Rotten Manor

Rotten Manor haunted house

Location: Holly, Michigan

"My fiancée and I went in Oct '18 and haven't forgotten about it since. This place was top-notch, and I've been haunting in the Detroit area since I was a little tot in the '90s.

First, we were floored by the design of the building—done in Gothic style Victorian with the classic tapered Mansard roof. The rickety wood siding gave the house a classic haunted look...Second, the location... The eerie, quaint setting is unsettling on an October night.

Third, the acting is Tony award tier. All the talent inside had a story, accent, or some nuance that really elevated the sense of dread throughout the haunt. There are no cheap thrills here, everything had purpose and built up to a scare." — William F. , Tacoma, Washington

65. Hellscream Haunted House and Escape Rooms

Hellscream Haunted House and Escape Rooms

The staff are professional, funny, and friendly. They provided me with one of the most positive escape room experiences I've had to date." — Brandt M. , Las Vegas, Nevada

64. The Beast

Beast Haunted House

Location: Kansas City, Missouri

"This was absolutely one of the scariest haunted house experiences that I have ever encountered. Carolina haunted houses have nothing on the Kansas City thriller ... The Beast! I was very happy to find out that [Missourians] enjoy a nice scare. First and foremost, I certainly advise you buy your tickets before arriving. The line to get in is incredibly long, and it is very much so worth a few extra bucks to skip all this waiting. I really liked the fact that there were food vendors around on the corners of the streets (food trucks). This helps with the annoying wait time. But once you get inside, everything changes for the better. The actors working at the haunted house do an excellent job at keeping all of us on edge but without scaring us too badly. I was certainly glad to experience such a wonderfully terrifying experience. The art installations were phenomenal, and designs were very authentic. I would certainly go back next Halloween season!" — Zyven S. , San Francisco, California

63. Scream Hollow Wicked Halloween Park

60. The 17th Door Haunt Experience

The 17th Door Haunt Experience

Location: Fullerton, California

"This place is no joke. From beginning to end, you are touched, grabbed, enclosed in small spaces, lifted and dropped into complete darkness, terrorized with live cockroaches, shocked, and if you're brave enough to push through every room, you'll leave completely drenched. (I don't recommend bringing your phones inside because of this last part.)" — McKenna A. , Huntington Beach, California

59. Insanitarium Haunted Attraction

One of the performers said "are you serious." We ducked ahead and just kept screaming/peeing." — Nikki C. , Trussville, Alabama

61. Macabre Cinema Haunted House

Macabre Cinema Haunted House

"One of the best haunts ever, and I've seen many! Came out from CA, grew up in KS. This was by far, the best of the trio offered in KC. Very dark, dank, just enough actors, decent props, decrepit old building perfect for a haunt! Can't believe these haunts are so long. If you scare easily, you may not make it through. This haunt was impressive, and I'm picky and not easily scared at all. Loved it! Great time!!!!!" — Jo N. , San Jose, California

The actors working inside the house were amazing and scared me over and over again! Not recommended for small children who don't like jump-scares. If you happen to get pushed to the front of the group you are with, be prepared to scream a lot." — Rachel S. , Greensboro, North Carolina

Jeffrey Epstein contact names revealed in unsealed documents. Here are key takeaways from the files.

By Cara Tabachnick, Allison Elyse Gualtieri

Updated on: January 5, 2024 / 2:46 PM EST / CBS News

Documents that include the names of more than 100 people connected to Jeffrey Epstein , including business associates and accusers, among others, have now been made public, following a federal judge's December ruling that the information be unsealed .

More than 900 pages of mostly unredacted documents were released Wednesday, Jan. 3. A second batch of documents was released Thursday, Jan. 4, and a third batch the day after that .

Much of the information has been previously reported, and many of those whose names are mentioned are not accused of any wrongdoing.

Though the unsealed court documents don't contain an actual list of associates, the names were expected to include some that also appeared on the flight logs of Epstein's private jet, nicknamed the "Lolita Express," which he often used to fly to his private island in the Caribbean. Those manifests and other documents, such as his private calendar, had previously been made public, including as part of legal proceedings or public records requests. Many of those who had business or social ties with Epstein, a convicted sex offender, have denied any misconduct or involvement in his activities.

The release of the names stems from a now-settled defamation lawsuit brought in 2015 by Virginia Giuffre, who accused British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell of enabling her abuse by Epstein.

Maxwell was found guilty by a New York jury in 2021 on conspiracy and trafficking charges related to Epstein, her longtime friend and sometime romantic partner, and her role for a decade in the abuse of underage girls.

What is in the Jeffrey Epstein-related court documents?

Court documents list 184 "J. Does," starting at J. Doe #3 through J. Doe #187. Some names are repeated twice. A small number are the names of minors or sexual assault victims, which the judge specified won't be released.

According to a court record released Jan. 3, documents for two Does — 107 and 110 — will not be immediately released. One was granted an extension until Jan. 22 for her appeal about the release and the other's appeal is still under review.

In many cases, the names in the documents "really are of innocent people. It's people who may have been employed, it's people who may have gone to dinner or to a cocktail party at Jeffrey Epstein's home," said CBS News legal analyst Rikki Klieman. "It is not necessarily naming people who have engaged in actions that were anything like the deplorable actions of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell."

One of the documents released Thursday includes a lengthy list of names of people Giuffre's attorneys wanted to depose in her lawsuit against Maxwell.

The documents released by the court mention some well-known figures whose contacts with Epstein have been reported in the past, such as Britain's Prince Andrew . The prince settled a lawsuit in 2022 with Virginia Giuffre, who accused him and Epstein of abusing her as a teen, an accusation Andrew denied. In a court filing at the time, his attorneys said, "Prince Andrew regrets his association with Epstein, and commends the bravery of Ms. Giuffre and other survivors in standing up for themselves and others."

A deposition from Johanna Sjoberg in the suit includes previous accusations alleging she was groped by Prince Andrew in 2001, when she was 21. BBC News reports Buckingham Palace previously called her allegations "categorically untrue." The newly released documents include questions to Maxwell about Sjoberg.

Bill Clinton, also among the people whose names appear in the documents, had allegedly been described by Epstein as "a good friend," one Epstein accuser recounted in 2019. The former president's name had also appeared on manifests for the private jet, on which he said he had taken four trips "in connection with the work of the Clinton Foundation." He has not been accused of wrongdoing. A spokesperson told CBS News it's been nearly 20 years since Clinton last had contact with Epstein, and referred CBS News to a 2019 statement denying Clinton had any knowledge of what he called Epstein's "terrible crimes."

Clinton's name also came up in Sjoberg's deposition. She did not accuse him of any wrongdoing, but said that Epstein told her "one time that Clinton likes them young, referring to girls."

In another of the documents, Maxwell testifies that Clinton never had a meal on Epstein's island and that she does not know how many times Clinton flew on Epstein's plane.

In the filing, Maxwell's team attempts to debunk an article by journalist Sharon Churcher of the Daily Mail, who described a dinner on Epstein's Little St. James island allegedly attended by Clinton "shortly after he left office." Maxwell's team claims, "Former FBI Director Louis Freeh submitted a report wherein he concluded that President Clinton 'did not, in fact travel to, nor was he present on, Little St. James Island between January 1, 2001 and January 1, 2003'," and goes on to say Secret Service assigned to the former president would have been required to file travel logs.

Also named in the documents is Sarah Kellen, a former Epstein employee who has been accused by one adult victim of knowingly scheduling her flights and appointments with the financier and Maxwell.

Kellen's spokesperson had said in a 2020 statement to CBS News that Kellen scheduled those appointments at the direction of Epstein and Maxwell, and was herself "sexually" and "psychologically" abused by Epstein "for years." The statement noted Kellen "deeply regrets that she had any part in it."

What happened in the Jeffrey Epstein case?

Epstein was accused of sexually assaulting numerous teenage girls, some of them as young as 14 years old, according to prosecutors. Over many years, he allegedly exploited a vast network of underage girls for sex at his homes in Manhattan ; Palm Beach, Florida; and his private island near St. Thomas.

Epstein had pleaded not guilty to charges brought in 2019 by federal prosecutors in New York of sex trafficking conspiracy and one count of sex trafficking with underage girls. His death in prison before facing trial was ruled a suicide .

Epstein had cut a deal with federal prosecutors in Florida in 2008, reaching a non-prosecution agreement on allegations he sexually abused underage girls, in return for pleading guilty to lesser state charges and serving 13 months in jail, much of the time on work release. He also had to pay settlements to victims and register as a sex offender.

That agreement, which had not been disclosed to his victims, was under investigation at the time of his death .

Among the documents released Thursday is a 2016 deposition from Joseph Recarey, a former detective with the Palm Beach Police Department who led the investigation into allegations against Epstein of sex abuse and trafficking that culminated in the 2008 plea deal.

In the deposition, Recarey states that he interviewed around 30 girls who were either asked to or gave massages at Epstein's home.

"When they went to perform a massage, it was for sexual gratification," Recarey testified. And of the 30-33 young women he interviewed, he said, only one, whom he described as "older," had massage experience, and "the majority were under" 18. Some told him they were recruited with the prospect of becoming a model for Victoria's Secret, Recarey said. He also said the young women told him they were offered money to recruit more girls. The 18-page released deposition has large gaps where pages were not included.

Who else's names are among those released in the Epstein-related documents?

A name's inclusion in the documents does not indicate the person has committed or has been accused of any wrongdoing. In addition, some of the people whose names appear are witnesses who were staff members, provided medical care or were in law enforcement, for example.

  • Juan Alessi and Alfredo Rodriguez : Alessi , a longtime manager of Epstein's Palm Beach estate, and Rodriguez, his former butler who died in 2015, are both named in the documents as having offered testimony.
  • Jean-Luc Brunel : A onetime close friend of Epstein, Brunel was found dead in a French jail in 2022 while being investigated by that country's authorities. He was accused of helping procure women and underage girls for Epstein and was also alleged to have raped and assaulted women he knew from the modeling world. In the documents, one witness mentioned in a deposition asking him for a job, and several others were asked about him.
  • Bill Richardson: The former governor of New Mexico, Richardson died in September. He had been previously reported to have visited Epstein's sprawling Zorro Ranch in New Mexico at least once. Richardson denied accusations made by Giuffre, who in a previously unsealed deposition said that she was directed to have sex with him. He called the accusation "completely false" and said he had never met Giuffre.
  • David Copperfield: In her deposition, Johanna Sjoberg said she had dinner with magician David Copperfield at Epstein's home. Copperfield is not accused of any wrongdoing. Sjoberg said Copperfield asked her "if I was aware that girls were getting paid to find other girls," but testified he told her no specifics about that.
  • Donald Trump : A witness said in a deposition that Epstein mentioned calling Trump and said the group would go to his casino when a storm forced his jet to land in Atlantic City during a 2001 trip. The witness was asked if she gave Trump a massage, but said no. Newsweek reported a Trump spokesperson said claims regarding Trump's relationship with Epstein were "thoroughly debunked." Trump said in 2018 that he knew Epstein "like everybody in Palm Beach knew him. … He was a fixture in Palm Beach." Trump said at the time, "I had a falling out with him a long time ago. I don't think I've spoken to him for 15 years. I wasn't a fan."
  • Alan Dershowitz : Attorney Alan Dershowitz defended Epstein in the 2008 criminal case . In one of the documents, lawyers discuss sworn testimony by two household employees, one of whom said Dershowitz visited Epstein's Florida mansion "pretty often" and allegedly got massages while he was there. According to the court document, the other employee testified Dershowitz visited Epstein's home without his family when young girls were present. Dershowitz has previously denied wrongdoing. Ahead of the documents' release, Dershowitz warned against inferring anything about their contents in a livestream on his personal YouTube channel Tuesday, saying "the important thing is not to assume guilt by association or guilt by accusation." He said in the half-hour livestream that, as Epstein's lawyer, he had been on the plane many times and he had been to the island once, with his wife and daughter, when no young people were present.
  • Michael Jackson : In a deposition released Jan. 3, Sjoberg is asked if she's met anyone famous when she was with Epstein, and she said she met Michael Jackson at Epstein's house in Palm Beach. She said she did not give him a massage and did not accuse him of any wrongdoing.

1. Lighthouse on Cape Aniva, Sakhalin

are haunted houses open during the week

This old lighthouse in the middle of a raging ocean was built in 1939, when this southern part of Sakhalin belonged to Japan. The last people to work here left it in the early 1990s. The lighthouse is located in an inaccessible place, with frequent fogs and strong currents, and can only be reached by motor boat and in good weather.

2. Smirnykh airfield, Sakhalin

are haunted houses open during the week

This airfield was built by the Japanese for the Imperial Army. Having become Russian, it was used by an Air Force regiment until 1994. When the airfield was closed, almost all the aircraft were transferred to another base, with the exception of two MiG-23MLs. They (or what is left of them) remain in the hangars still.

3. Schooner in Morzhovaya Bay, Kamchatka

are haunted houses open during the week

This whaling schooner, which was thrown ashore by a storm, was left to rust on a lonely coast. Many of the nearby villages have been abandoned, so there is no one to remove it.

4. Gunpowder room, Russky Island

are haunted houses open during the week

5. Mir diamond mine, Yakutia

are haunted houses open during the week

This former diamond mine is so huge that even helicopters are banned from flying over it as they may be dragged in by the draft. It is the second largest (after the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, U.S.) man-made hole in the world: 525 meters deep and 1,200 meters in diameter.

6. Mokry bridge, Chuvashia

are haunted houses open during the week

This spectacular viaduct in the village of Mokry is more than 100 years old. During World War II, the Germans were desperately looking for a bridge here, since it was used by echelons of ammunition convoys. They failed to find it and the bridge was “retired” only in 1986.

7. Church of St. Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, village of Russkoye Khodyashevo

are haunted houses open during the week

8. Settlement of Kadykchan, Magadan Region

are haunted houses open during the week

Kadykchan (translated from the Even language, meaning “Valley of Death”) was built by prisoners. These days, it is an abandoned mining “ghost town” with the creepiest Lenin monument of all. People left it after there was an explosion at a nearby mine and the heating was turned off. In 2012, only one elderly man lived in the settlement, which once had a population of 12,000 people.

9. Sever communications station, Magadan

are haunted houses open during the week

are haunted houses open during the week

The country’s largest mudflow control dam was built in the town of Tyrnyauz on the slopes of the Central Caucasus mountains in 1999. That same year, it saved the 27,000-strong town from a powerful mudflow. However, no money to restore the dam was ever found.

In 2014, this village located beyond the Arctic Circle became famous overnight: it had served as a film set for Andrey Zvyagintsev's internationally acclaimed movie ‘Leviathan’. One of the most atmospheric places in Teriberka - a graveyard of wooden ships – is also captured in the movie.

17. Kalyazin church, Tver Region

are haunted houses open during the week

The flooded bell tower standing on an island in the Uglich reservoir 200 km north of Moscow was once part of the Kalyazin monastery, which was often visited by Russian tsars. Since 2014, due to falling water levels, it has been once again surrounded by land.

18. The von Geisler castle, Tver Region

are haunted houses open during the week

The Gothic castle stands near a lake in the middle of a forest. A descendant of a Russified Dutch family, Vladimir Geisler, built it three years before the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, after which he had to flee the country. In Soviet times, the building housed a sanatorium, which, however, failed to survive the Perestroika years.

33. Test bench in Istra, Moscow Region

are haunted houses open during the week

This place has had a bad reputation since the 17th century. The densely populated village of Likhachevo suddenly began to die out for an unknown reason. A decision was taken to build a church here, which temporarily improved things. However, something happened to each of the churches built in this place and soon trouble returned. are haunted houses open during the week

This ruined estate in the village of Muromtsevo was once an example of European architecture and interiors, with marble fireplaces and “French gardens”. Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Biden Lies Low in St. Croix During Holiday Week

The president is enjoying a working vacation, a White House official said. Residents hope to bring attention to the Virgin Islands’ economic troubles.

A group of people standing on a street corner as a police car blocks the road.

By Lisa Friedman

Reporting from St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands

As wars rage in Gaza and Ukraine, migrants stream illegally into the United States in record numbers and an intense 2024 campaign season looms, President Biden is lying low.

Here on tropical St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Mr. Biden, the first lady, Jill Biden; and their granddaughter Natalie are spending New Year’s week in a secluded oceanfront villa overlooking the turquoise Caribbean, the president is staying mostly out of the spotlight.

On Saturday, Mr. Biden made his first public appearance, venturing out to attend mass at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Christiansted, the largest town in St. Croix. He and Dr. Biden later taped an interview with Ryan Seacrest, due to air on New Year’s Eve as part of ABC’s “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest.” In the evening, the president and first lady dined at Too Chez, one of the island’s top restaurants, and he afterward revealed his New Year’s resolution.

“To come back next year,” Mr. Biden said.

Republicans have roundly criticized Mr. Biden’s island getaway, which began just a day after he returned to the White House from spending Christmas with family at Camp David.

Several lawmakers accused the president of failing to address the migrant surge along the southern U.S. border by taking time away. And on Thursday, when the White House announced in the morning that there would be no public events for Mr. Biden that day as temperatures hovered in the 80s on St. Croix, an arm of the Republican National Committee pounced.

“Illegal immigrants are pouring across the open southern border by the tens of thousands every day,” the group RNC Research wrote on the social media site X , adding that Mr. Biden, “on his second vacation in a week — called it a day before noon.”

Julian Zelizer, a historian at Princeton University, said that presidential vacations are virtually always denounced by the opposing party.

But even a commander in chief needs to unwind sometimes, Mr. Zelizer noted, and, in this day and age, no president is ever truly unplugged.

“It’s not as if the president takes a vacation like many of us and just sits around on the beach or something,” he said. “They go with their full presidential apparatus and they’re surrounded by their advisers.”

A White House official described Mr. Biden’s trip as a working vacation. Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser, accompanied the president to St. Croix and has briefed him multiple times since arriving, the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the president’s schedule.

On Friday, Mr. Biden condemned Russia for launching what he called the largest aerial assault on Ukraine since the start of the war, and he issued a statement warning that President Vladimir V. Putin “must be stopped.” Asked Saturday if he planned to speak with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine after Russia’s latest attacks, Mr. Biden replied, “I speak to him regularly.”

He also called on Congress on Friday to approve national security funding for Ukraine and Israel, which has been tied to negotiations over border and immigration policies, and White House officials said the president was closely monitoring those talks, too.

Many St. Croix residents said that, even though Mr. Biden was staying largely out of the public eye this year, they appreciated that his visits have helped highlight the history of the island, which was once home to the founding father Alexander Hamilton. They described it as a quirky, warmhearted island where stray cats are well fed at five-star resorts. In Lin Manuel-Miranda’s musical “Hamilton,” St. Croix features only as the “forgotten spot in the Caribbean,” from which a young Hamilton pulled himself out of poverty.

Mr. Biden’s visit is his second to St. Croix as president, but the Bidens have traveled there more than a dozen times over the years.

“He loves St. Croix, and we really love having him here,” said Leonore Gillette, a retired schoolteacher who has lived on the island for 45 years.

“We certainly appreciate the infusion of activity,” said Nadia Bougouneau, another longtime resident who works at the Buccaneer, a resort that was filled to capacity with Secret Service agents and members of the media traveling with Mr. Biden. The president played on the 18-hole golf course at the resort last year with his grandson Hunter.

Several people, including the governor of the Virgin Islands, fondly recalled Mr. Biden’s visits before he was president — and the Secret Service was not blocking miles of roads for security. Back then, locals and tourists said they would run into him biking, jogging or picking up coffee at Ziggy’s, an island market and gas station on the east end.

“We feel like he’s a Virgin Islander,” Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said.

“Before he was president, I would be downtown at night and see him in a restaurant, and I’d be sitting with people and say, ‘That’s Joe Biden.’ And people would say, ‘No way,’” he recalled.

These days, the governor said, Mr. Biden’s visit gave him a chance to highlight some of the issues facing the U.S. Virgin Islands, which is heavily dependent on tourism and still working to recover from the hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Mr. Bryan called the islands’ most serious challenge a requirement to match 10 percent of $15 billion in federal hurricane reconstruction aid. He said the money, and the ability of the Virgin Islands to repair its water systems and other major projects, could be jeopardized because the government cannot afford the approximately $1.5 billion match. The Virgin Islands, home to about 87,000 people, has an annual budget of $1.2 billion.

Still, Mr. Bryan said, he does not view Mr. Biden’s New Year’s visit as the best time to make his case to the president.

“To be honest, I preferred it when he wasn’t president because he spent more time with me,” he joked, adding that this year, “I really try to stay away from him so he can get a chance to rest, because he’s going to need it to go into this election.”

Mr. Biden is entering 2024 with a persistently low job approval rating of 39 percent, according to December polling from Gallup , the worst of any modern-day president seeking re-election. Mr. Zelizer said that makes the policy challenges Mr. Biden faces in the Middle East and Ukraine — and with Congress — all the more difficult.

“All of this is going to be waiting for him when he comes back to Washington, and he knows it,” Mr. Zelizer said. He added, “It’s going to be a tough year.”

An earlier version of this article misstated the given name of a St. Croix resident. She is Nadia Bougouneau, not Nadine.
