Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Starting with the Yale School of Medicine (YSM) graduating class of 2002, the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library and YSM Office of Student Research have collaborated on the Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library (YMTDL) project, publishing the digitized full text of medical student theses on the web as a valuable byproduct of Yale student research efforts. The digital thesis deposit has been a graduation requirement since 2006. Starting in 2012, alumni of the Yale School of Medicine were invited to participate in the YMTDL project by granting scanning and hosting permission to the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library, which digitized the Library’s print copy of their thesis or dissertation. A grant from the Arcadia Fund in 2017 provided the means for digitizing over 1,000 additional theses. IF YOU ARE A MEMBER OF THE YALE COMMUNITY AND NEED ACCESS TO A THESIS RESTRICTED TO THE YALE NETWORK, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR VPN (VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK) IS ON.

The Digital library aims to provide access to information 'on demand' regardless of the location of the computer, where it is stored. The role of digital libraries in the present day information environment and new challenges and promises for library services especially in the India. A Digital Library is to be an electronic collection of real or virtual resources, which may also be available elsewhere. These resources must be whole works with which human can have a complete cognitive effective engagement. A Digital library may allow either online or offline access to the elements it organizes and houses, and may include multimedia as well as multilingual data. Although accessible online, a digital library is not identical to a website or a portal however while portals, specialized websites and search engines cover a wide range of subject areas, digital libraries are more narrowly focused around one or a specific group of disciplines. Digital libraries, moreover attach content specific and highly descriptive metadata such as, descriptors or keywords to describe each item in the collection. Therefore, searches in a digital library can produce more useful results, save time and effort in searching , and in the best of cases browsers may directly access the text or multimedia content for which they executive their search. INTRODUCTION We are living in the age of digitization. Library provides information services that must fulfill the Information needs of present and future library users. Traditional libraries are still handling largely printed materials that are expensive and bulky. Information seekers are also longer satisfied with only printed materials. They need to supplement the printed information with more dynamic electronic and multimedia documents. The user demands for information delivery in digital form at their desktop are increasing in recent times. In the present environment where there is a wealth of information resources being published and transmitted through electronic media, libraries must take proactive measures to develop digital collections to cater to digital information needs of their users[1].

  • Wayne State launches new digital collections focused on Detroit, Michigan and American history

thesis on digital library

Explore the heritage of Detroit and pivotal moments in American history through our newest digital collections. These collections offer a glimpse into the city’s past neighborhoods like Poletown and Black Bottom, captured by photographers Bruce L. Harkness and Edward “Bucky” Stanton. Witness the fight for labor rights and civil rights unfold in powerful images from the Coalition of Labor Union Women, the NAACP and the Poor People’s Campaign of 1968. Get a behind-the-scenes look at Detroit’s city leadership through the papers of former Mayor Jerome P. Cavanagh and child development research of the Merrill-Palmer Institute. These recently added collections, as well as the others in the libraries’ digital collections, help paint a picture of the people, places and movements that have shaped Detroit, as well as our country’s, narrative.

  • Bruce L. Harkness Poletown Photographs : Bruce Harkness photographed the area known as “Poletown,” a multi-ethnic, multi-racial urban area on Detroit’s East Side, from February to December 1981. These photographs document the hundreds of buildings and businesses that were demolished to make way for the construction of a General Motors assembly plant. In addition, Harkess captured vibrant urban exteriors and interiors, neighborhood landmarks, residents, and street scenes.
  • Coalition of Labor Union Women : The Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) was founded in 1974 with the aim of increasing women’s involvement and influence in labor unions and consequently, the workforce. Their first national convention, held that year in Chicago, sought to establish women as full and equal participants in the labor movement through four main objectives: organizing more women; empowering women to fight discrimination; encouraging women to be politically active, particularly concerning affirmative action; and urging women to aspire to leadership.
  • Edward Stanton Photograph Collection : This gallery features the earliest known works of Edward “Bucky” Stanton (1914-2006), a Detroit-born photographer who captured images of Detroit’s Black Bottom neighborhood during the final years of the Great Depression. Stanton’s focus was primarily on portraiture, and this gallery contains dozens of candid shots of children at play, as well as views of the everyday happenings around their neighborhood.
  • Images from the Jerome P. Cavanagh Papers : The papers of Mr. Cavanagh, mayor of Detroit from 1962 to 1970. They include correspondence, reports, studies, speeches, minutes, and other materials of the mayor’s office and commissions and departments of the city. Its extent is approximately 334.5 linear feet.
  • Merrill-Palmer Institute Gallery : The Merrill-Palmer Institute was founded in 1920 by an endowment from Lizzie Merrill Palmer. Throughout its 61 years of independent operation, the Institute was greatly respected and internationally known as one of the top institutions for education, training and research in Child Development.
  • NAACP Image Gallery :The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization. Established on February 9, 1909, its objective was to help African-American citizens gain equal political, legal, economic and social opportunities.
  • Poor People’s Campaign, 1968 : The Poor People’s Campaign of 1968 was organized by Reverend Ralph Abernathy, and, before his death in April 1968, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., along with support from various Civil Rights organizations. In May and June 1968, demonstrators camped on the National Mall in Washington D. C. as part of the Poor People’s Campaign, calling their settlement “Resurrection City.”
  • Strikes! : This gallery contains early imagery of organized labor, including strikes, demonstrations, organizing efforts, and other related events. Topics include the Copper Country Strike, Loray Mills Textile Strike, Indianapolis Street Car Strikes, and Paterson Textile Strike. Please note  that this gallery contains scenes of violence and casualty that some may find disturbing. Viewer caution is advised.
  • Tony Spina Collection : Anthony “Tony” Spina (1914 -1995) served as Chief Photographer for the Detroit Free Press from 1952 until his retirement in 1989 and worked locally, nationally, and internationally to photograph the pivotal events and the people who shaped the latter half of the twentieth century. Widely regarded as one of the finest photojournalists of his time, Spina was the recipient of over 450 state, national, and international awards for his photography, including the Sprague Memorial Award from the National Press Photographers Association and a shared Pulitzer Prize awarded to the Free Press for its coverage of the Detroit Riots of 1967.

Our digital collections are sourced from both  Special Collections  and the  Walter P. Reuther Library , and through grant-funded partnerships with a range of local cultural and educational institutions. Over 50,000 images and texts celebrate Detroit’s contributions to the arts, fashion, history, architecture, interior design, medicine and more.

Bold Lewks from NYPL's Digital Collections That Would Slay at Any Met Gala

Fashionistas, style mavens, and connoisseurs of couture—it's almost game day! The annual MET Gala, held the first Monday of May, is a star-studded fundraiser famed for its epic red carpet of show-stopping pageantry. While guests are encouraged to dress for a chosen theme—this year's is "The Garden of Time" drawing inspiration from a 1962 short story by British writer J.G. Ballard—many attendees stray from the assignment or interpret it liberally. The result is a parade of grandeur across the spectrum of fabulousness from outlandish and campy to thrilling and dramatic.

In honor of this much anticipated spectacle, we've pulled together some costumes and outfits from T he New York Public Library's vast Digital Collections that we feel would look right at home at the event. Anna W., let us know if these looks would make the cut!

CARM external launch postponed until October 2024

What happened?

The Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) on April 19 announced that it will launch the CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management digital initiative (CARM) internally on May 13, with the external launch for trade-chain partners (TCPs) postponed to October 2024. This stage of the CARM rollout is known as CARM Release 2. The CARM is intended to transform and modernize the collection of duties and taxes for commercial goods imported into Canada, while postponement of full implementation seeks to allow time for adequate transition.

The internal launch will allow the CBSA to continue working towards the expected benefit of better compliance under CARM. The CBSA will use CARM to identify errors and discrepancies in duties and tax submissions and begin working with industry to resolve these issues.

In addition, on April 18, the Canadian House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade (CIIT) released its report on CARM. This report might have influenced this recent CBSA announcement because the report (1) specifically identifies that the concerns raised by witnesses are a sufficient call for caution and that the resulting effects that may occur if the implementation of CARM fails could not be identified with sufficient precision and certainty; and (2) recommends that the House of Commons asks the government to suspend the implementation of the CARM until the CIIT can complete its study and table a final report containing its observations and recommendations.

Why is it relevant?

This announcement satisfies the CBSA’s original intent to launch on May 13 while also providing adequate time for the CIIT to complete its study in preparation for an external launch of CARM at an appropriate state of readiness. The internal launch will allow the CBSA to continue to advance work towards the expected benefit of better compliance. The CBSA will use CARM to identify errors and discrepancies in duties and tax submissions and begin to work with industry in these areas.

Action to consider

Businesses that interact with the CBSA should take all steps to meet the requirements under CARM before October 2024. They should start the process to meet these requirements by identifying a Business Account Manager, creating a user profile , and registering their business on the CARM Client Portal (CCP); delegating authority to all TCPs and posting the appropriate financial security; and paying duties and taxes directly to the CBSA, which can be completed through the CCP or through the business’s customs broker.

Importers also should consider preparing a written submission to the CIIT, so that any concerns about the CARM can be considered in the report that the CIIT will present to the House of Commons.

The CARM is intended to transform and modernize the collection of duties and taxes for commercial goods imported into Canada. The initiative targets the revenue and cash management systems currently in place for assessing and collecting duties and taxes and replaces them with a simplified process that includes electronic payment options. Participation in the CARM is mandatory for all Canadian-resident and non-resident businesses that import goods into Canada and their TCPs that interact with the CBSA. Importers that do not participate will be prohibited from bringing goods into Canada.

Note: A TCP includes (1) employees that are responsible for customs and trade compliance activities, and for the payment of the organization’s duties and taxes, and (2) service providers that help with any customs and trade-related activities (i.e., trade consultants and customs brokers).

In May 2021, as part of Release 1 of the CARM initiative, the CBSA launched the CCP, a self-service tool to facilitate accounting and revenue management processes with the CBSA. The CCP can be accessed by importers, customs brokers, and certain trade consultants. Under Release 1, organizations are required to:

  • register their business on the CCP, create a user profile/business account, and identify and designate a Business Account Manager
  • delegate authority to all their TCPs so that they can continue managing the organization’s commercial importation activities under the CARM.

The CBSA’s CCP website provides many tools to help businesses, including a worksheet for collecting the required information and completing the registration steps.

Observation: It is important to know that the new measures being implemented as part of the CARM will not impact the process for releasing imported goods. This function remains with the business’s customs broker (if those services are utilized).

CBSA internal launch of CARM Release 2

Release 2 will enhance the Agency’s compliance and enforcement capabilities. However, due to the ongoing strike vote activity by the Public Service Alliance of Canada and its potential impact on the Agency’s operations, the CBSA plans to postpone the launch for TCPs until October 2024. This delay will ensure that the Agency can adequately support partners as they transition to using CARM. As a result, TCPs will maintain their current operations until the fall.

While CARM is prepared for deployment, the backing of CBSA employees is crucial for its successful implementation. By delaying its launch, the Agency is positioning industry partners for success. Considering the connections between CARM and other business mainframe systems in the CBSA and Canada Revenue Agency, the next available opportunity to implement significant information technology changes is in October 2024.

TCP CARM Release 2 (postponed until October 2024)

Release 2 of the CARM initiative will expand the functionality of the CCP, including the ability for importers to post and monitor security to participate in the Release Prior to Payment (RPP) program, among other functions.

The RPP program allows goods to be released before duties and taxes are paid and facilitates the movement of goods across the border. To participate in the program, importers will need to post a financial security (i.e., a surety bond or cash deposit).

Observation: We recommended that importers pay the Statement of Account directly to the CBSA. Note, however, that there may be circumstances in when it can be paid through the customs broker.

CARM Release 2 was made available in October 2023 to selected industry partners that wanted to test their own internal systems, and for software service providers to continue to certify their software with CARM.

The CBRA’s proposed implementation plan for CARM Release 2 will be updated to reflect the new timelines including the delay for TCPs.

Implications for non-resident importers (NRIs) and suppliers

NRIs are required to register for the CCP and have an active CCP account for seamless customs clearance processes and to enable their imports to be handled efficiently.

Suppliers handling delivered duty paid (DDP) shipments in Canada also are required to have a CCP account, which helps reduce disruptions in the customs clearance process, thus contributing to the overall efficiency of cross-border trade.

Observation: NRIs and DDP suppliers should promptly register their businesses on the CCP and adhere to the CARM mandate; they should start the CCP registration process now if it is not already completed. Failure to have a CCP account in place before May 2024 will result in potential delays and complications in customs clearances.

Other considerations

Importers should register with the CCP under Release 1 before October 2024 to minimize border delays and benefit from the RPP transition period (i.e., importers will be assigned RPP qualifying status for a 180-day transition period allowing them to obtain the requisite financial security and adapt to this new model, while mitigating border disruptions).

3 underrated Netflix shows you should watch this weekend (May 3-5)

6 people stand on a beach in The 100.

Even as Netflix attempts to wow subscribers with its constant stream of new shows and movies , many are also aware that there’s plenty of stuff on Netflix that the service basically buries. The algorithm might recommend it to you, but if the algorithm doesn’t, you’re not very likely to find it.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015-2019)

Jane the virgin (2014-2019), the 100 (2014-2020).

If you’re looking for some underrated shows that are nonetheless great, then you’re in luck. We’ve pulled together a list of three underrated titles that are all available on Netflix to be watched immediately. While Netflix does host plenty of good stuff, it’ll only keep hosting it if you decide to watch it. Here are three shows you should start with this weekend.

Perhaps the most innovative show to come along in some time,  Crazy Ex-Girlfriend  combined fantasy and reality by creating a universe where people regularly break out into original songs. The show is a musical comedy about a woman who moves across the country on a whim to chase after an old crush.

  • 3 Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend (May 3-5)
  • 3 underrated Netflix movies you should watch this weekend (May 3-5)
  • The 50 best shows on Netflix in May 2024

It featured two original songs every week, and a shocking number of those songs were excellent. The show was always something of a scrappy underdog, but part of its appeal was the sheer creativity on display and that it had some genuinely interesting things to say about love, mental illness, and what it means to be a good person.

You can watch  Crazy Ex-Girlfriend  on Netflix.

Telling the story of a teenage girl who finds herself impregnated even though she’s never had sex,  Jane the Virgin  is operating from a pretty whacky premise from its very first moments. The show pulls a lot from the world of telenovelas, and establishes a tone that is all its own.

Thanks to a strong ensemble cast, willingness to make genuinely bold creative decisions, and a love triangle that had plenty of actual meat on the bone, Jane the Virgin  became an instant sensation with critics, and has continued to grow its fanbase in the decade since it first aired.

You can watch  Jane the Virgin   on Netflix.

One of the great undersung sci-fi series of the 2010s,  The 100  is a post-apocalyptic series that imagines a future in which the majority of humanity has been annihilated by nuclear war. Those who survive decide to send 100 children down the surface of the planet to test its hospitability, and these new inhabitants find themselves fascinated by a homeworld they are totally unfamiliar with.

While not every creative decision on the show was beloved,  The 100  has the kind of dense sci-fi storytelling that so many shows lack today, and it has the kind of extended run that few shows are afforded as well.

You can watch  The 100 on Netflix.

Our selections include a love story involving two standout entertainers, a charming comedy involving weddings, and the sleeper hit of 2023. The Wedding Planner (2001)

Hot off the heels of the sci-fi hit Fallout, which you probably finished in a single night or two, you might be looking for a new show to sink your teeth into. Amazon Prime Video has a wide selection beyond the most-talked-about hit shows, including some underrated series that you might not know about or haven't considered watching.

Among the three underrated shows on Amazon Prime Video you need to watch in May, one is a British miniseries that will give you Quentin Tarantino and Coen Brothers vibes, another is a neo-Western with a sci-fi twist, and the third is a Canadian comedy-drama based on a ranch that has been going strong now for 17 years. Learn more about each one and you might find that they’re right up your alley. Boat Story (2023) Boat Story | OFFICIAL trailer - BBC Available to stream through Amazon Freevee, Boat Story gives Quentin Tarantino vibes on the small screen thanks to its genre-bending style and violent storyline. In the show, two strangers discover cocaine on a boat. But rather than turn it into the authorities, the pair, both down on their luck with nothing to lose, decide to sell it and split the funds. But a large cocaine shipment never goes missing without someone nefarious hot on its tail, as Janet (Daisy Haggard) and Samuel (Paterson Joseph) quickly realize. Running from the police, dodging hitmen and gangsters, and desperate to get out of the harrowing situation, the unlikely duo meet gruesome, graphic, savage violence along the way. Boat Story beautifully weaves humor with the dark plot and heavy brutality, with fast-paced action through the short six-episode series. Stream Boat Story on Amazon Prime Video. Outer Range (2022-) OUTER RANGE Trailer (2022)

Netflix’s smash-hit series Baby Reindeer is a mind-blowing true story about Scottish comedian Richard Gadd, who was relentlessly stalked by a woman for years. In the process of telling his story, it also reveals a traumatic event that occurred in his past. The underlying themes in the series hit hard, but it's also a cathartic story of damaged self-worth, loneliness, ambition, desperation, assault, and a system that often fails people.

Chances are you have probably already powered your way through the seven episodes of the black-comedy drama thriller. If you’re looking for something else to satiate your appetite while processing the disturbingly good show, put these three series on your radar to tackle next. Beef (2023)
