How to Make a Poster in Google Slides (9 Easy Steps)

by Andy Storey | Digital Art , Graphic Design , TV & Movie Poster Design

how to make a research poster in google slides

There are plenty of apps that you can use to make a poster. But one of the easiest and most affordable (kind of free, they get to use some of your online info), might be Google Slides . After signing up for an account and agreeing to Google’s terms of service, you’ll find it easy to create your poster elements and get the design layout that you want.

But to use this powerful technology, there are a few things that you need to know. Keep reading to learn everything you need about how to make a poster in Google Slides.

Setting up the Page

The first thing that you need to do is format the page correctly. You will need to start by selecting “File” then “New” from the dropdown menu. Next, it’s time to get the page set to the correct size. Here are the steps to follow to do this:

  • Select “File”
  • Choose “Page Setup” from the dropdown list of options
  • Pick “Custom”
  • Enter the dimensions that you will be working with. This often depends on whether you want a portrait or landscape layout. Some of the most common dimensions are 35 by 43 for portrait and 43 by 35 for landscape.

Google Slides

Delete Text and Boxes

The next thing you need to do is delete the text boxes and any other features on the poster. This will give you a blank slate that you can start from.

Select all with your mouse and right-click and choose delete. This will clear out everything and get you ready to design your own elements.

Choose a Background Image

It’s time to decide what background image you want to use. It’s important to choose which one you are using. This is the first thing the viewer will see, so you want to find something that will grab their attention.

You’ll also need to choose a high-quality image. This will ensure that it doesn’t become blurry when you blow it up to full size. One thing to point out is that you will need to use royalty-free images if you intend to use your posters commercially. Here are two royalty-free image companies that have enormous collections of photos and graphics:

  • Envato elements (an amazing subscription service with unlimited downloads)
  • ShutterStick (perhaps the most popular stock and graphics company)

Sometimes, you won’t want to use a picture. Instead, you can use color as the background. To do this, you will need to use the “Solid Fill” option in the “Design” tab.

Google slides

Creating The Poster Template

Once you have chosen your background image, you will be able to start adding more content.  There are plenty of ways that you can do this by using the tools in the design panel. Some of the tools you can use include:

  • Add additional images
  • Putting in logos
  • Shapes

Adding Content Images

You will also be able to add some PNG vector art. Google Slides has a limited number of artwork options for you to choose from. But some sites will let you download more. One of the best options will be flaticon.com . They have a massive selection for you to choose from, so you’ll be able to find something that will suit your project.

When you have found something that you like, it will be easy to incorporate it into your poster. You just need to follow these steps:

  • Click on the mountain icon. This is the pictures section.
  • Choose where you want to import the image from. The next thing that you need to consider is where the image will come from. There are plenty of options for you to choose from. You can get it from your storage device, Google Docs, or import a picture from the internet.
  • Confirm your selection. Once you do this the image will appear. It should be noted that this will be in the original size. Because of this, you might need to resize it a little to make sure that it fits.

Google Slides

There are a few things to keep in mind when you are adding images. Most importantly, you’ll need to consider copyright law. Like I said above, stick to royalty-free images. This ensures that you aren’t accidentally stealing someone else’s work or photography.

It’s also important to think about the size of the file. If it is too small for the poster, and you try to blow it up, it will end up looking blurry. In this case, the best solution is often to choose a new image.

If you need an article to better understand resolution, PPI (pixels per image and DPI (dots per image), then you will want to check out this article:

  • The Top 5 DPI to Use f or Different Posters

Adding Text

The next thing that you need to do is start adding text with the text box tool. This will allow you to send your message to the viewer. There are a few things to keep in mind when you are doing this. First, you’ll need to make sure that you tailor your text to the target audience.

In most cases, this will mean keeping your thoughts brief so that the poster can be read in a matter of seconds. If you are making an academic or informative poster, though, you might need to add more details.  Check out this article to learn how to nail copy:

  • Can Posters Have Words? (And How Many is Too Much?)

It’s also important to spend some time crafting your message. You will need to convey your message using the fewest number of words. Getting used to writing concisely can be a challenge.

Add Text in Google Slides

Edit the Poster

Once you are happy with all the elements, it’s time to edit the poster. Google Slides will make this a relatively straightforward process. In this case, you will be able to click on an element. Then, you will be able to resize or rotate it. You can also change the text color or size to make it easier to read.

As you are editing the poster, it can be a good idea to zoom out. This will give you a better idea of how the poster will look when viewed from a distance. This will tell you whether it will be visually striking enough to grab the audience’s attention.

Once again, we have dropped the perfect article to help you in your graphic communication better. This is a must-read:

  • The 9 Rules of Poster Making (and 5 Things You Need to Succeed)

Using a Template

So far, we’ve looked at how you will be able to create a poster from scratch. If you prefer, you will be able to use a pre-existing poster template. All you need to do is download and open these, and the elements will be in place. This will make it easy for you to start editing your poster.

If you want some free ideas and templates, you can check out this article .

Once you find a template you like, you will need to save it in your Google Docs. Then, you will need to open it. This will allow you to edit its appearance and change the elements. But, with the basics already in place, it will be a lot easier to make a great poster.

Google Slides

Saving the Poster

Once you are happy with the poster’s look, it’s time to save it to your computer. You will need to hit the “File” button and select the “Save” option from the dropdown menu. This will save the template for future projects, allowing you to keep a consistent format.

In most cases, you will need to save it as a PDF file. This will make it easy for you to print it out later. To do this, you will need to follow these steps:

  • Click “File”
  • Select “Download As” from the menu
  • There will be a “PDF” option
  • Decide where you want to save the PDF and give it a memorable name

Print Out Your Poster

The final thing that you need to do is print it out. This will be a lot easier once you have converted it into a PDF file. You should be able to send a copy of this file to your local printing store or use a USB stick and personally deliver it, this is the one I use .

Before you print it, just double-check the print preview and confirm there are no mistakes. This will ensure that it is looking the way that you expect it to.

Final Thoughts

Google Slides can be a powerful tool and is excellent for making basic posters. It makes it easy to add text, shapes, images, and other graphic elements.

You can essentially edit everything with ease, so you can get the poster looking precisely the way you want it to. However, if you are looking at really improving your design game, you will want to master the software outlined in this article:

Google Slides Instructions

Poster instructions - google slides.

These instructions are based on Google Slides as of November 2017 (be aware that Slides, a "cloud" application, can change at any time)

You are going to create a single Slides slide that is 35 inches by 43 inches.

Step 1: Create a "poster" Slide

Open  Google Drive

New Google Slides

 File > Page Setup

Portrait orientation - 35" x 43"  or Landscape orientation - 43" x 35"

Delete the standard slide text/graphic boxes

Add content to your poster as you would any slide:

insert  text boxes to organize your material, text and images, on the slide

backgrounds are best selected from the pre-set design schemes

About Images

Avoid using too many large images

Don't use a background image that will make text hard to read!

Generally avoid resizing a small image to a larger one

It will be helpful to zoom in (to see how images and graphics look and to work with text) and out (to get the overall layout that you want). To zoom check the option in the "View" menu.

Save your work as usual with Drive (automatic saving)

NOTE: Important things to remember/consider:

Project Requirements - Does your poster contain the items required for your project. Professors or conferences typically require some or all of the following:

Your name(s) (and the names of any sponsors)

Date (or semester)

Course, or department, or your project name

Your professor's name

References (may be able to use smaller fonts)

Preview, Preview, Preview - Use the print preview whenever possible in this process to see if your output looks correct.

Things to check:

Does the poster size look OK with respect to the displayed borders (not a postage stamp on a huge screen)? If not, check page/paper sizes

Are top/bottom or left/right sections of the poster clipped? If not, check the orientation and/or the length/width order of the paper size (e.g., may need to change 43x35 to 35x43)

Remember the image notes above (too many, too large, or resized images can look great but cause problems with printing)

PowerPoint has a "Grid and Guides" function which you can lay over your poster; this might be useful for lining things up. Find it in the "View" menu.

Will your text color be hard to read on your background graphic?

Step 2: Create a PDF of your Slides  slide

File > Download as... > PDF Document (.pdf)

Submit or share as directed

Note: PDF submission is  required for  individual printing requests. For Google Slides you may also be asked to share your Slides.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Create shadow boxes with no outlines.

Whichever approach you go with, take a step back and look at your poster to ensure it doesn't look cluttered and is visually pleasing.

3. Stay Minimal

Beginning Graphic Design: Layout & Composition

Best Practices

Resize according to guidelines

If your poster has to be a specific size, make sure to do this as your first step so all content pieces you add are scaled appropriately. If you resize at the outset, that will save you the trouble of having to reformat your content down the road.  There are a number of programs in which you can design your poster, but PowerPoint and Google Slides tend to be two of the most popular.  If you use any of the templates found in the resources box on this page, you should be able to download the template pre-sized to common conference dimensions.

How to resize in PowerPoint

Open a blank presentation and navigate to the Design tab. In the Slide Size dropdown menu, select Custom Slide Size, enter the appropriate dimensions, and click OK.

How to resize in Google Slides

Open a blank presentation. From the File menu, select Page Setup and then select Custom in the Page Setup dropdown menu. Enter the appropriate dimensions and click OK.

Make it intuitive

The layout of your research poster should be easy for visitors to follow, especially if it will remain up while you're not there to present. A common layout is columns that can be read from the top of the poster to the bottom and from left to right.

Poster in column format with top to bottom and left to right layout.

Build in plenty of white space

For optimum readability, i nclude plenty of white, or empty, space between elements. White space simply refers to areas without content - no text, no images.

Use headings

Just as the layout of your poster contributes to its readability, so too does the use of headings. Poster headings often look similar to the sections of a research paper (e.g., Introduction, Methods, Results, Conclusion, etc.), and their arrangement on your poster should make sense to audiences. For example, Introduction should always come before Results. The logical progression of each section to the one that follows will help your audiences navigate your content.

Pare your text down

Your poster should not be overly text heavy. The amount of text you use will depend, in part, on how the conference or your professor structures the poster session. If you be will present at all times your poster is hanging, you can use less text because you will be available to explain your research to visitors. If, on the other hand, your poster will remain hanging before or after the session when you will not be present, you may need to include more text to make sure your poster is descriptive enough that visitors can follow along.

Break your text up

If you do need to include a lot of text, find ways to break it up visually. Can you break up a big chunk of text into a couple paragraphs? If so, do it! Can you distill a paragraph to a bulleted list of the most essential elements? If so, even better! Is there an image that would go well between your Methods and Results sections? If so, add it!

Typical research poster structure

The typical structure of a research poster can vary slightly depending on the specific requirements and guidelines of the conference or event where it will be presented, but it usually includes the following sections: Title: A concise and informative title that reflects the main topic or research question. (includes list of the study's authors, followed by institutional affiliations). Introduction: An introduction that provides background information on the topic, outlines the research question and highlights the significance and relevance of the study. Methods: A clear and concise description of the methods and techniques used in the study. Results: A summary of the main findings of the study, including any relevant statistical analyses. Discussion: Discuss the implications of the findings, their relevance to the field, and any limitations or areas for future research. Conclusion: A brief summary of the study's main findings and key takeaways. References: A list of the sources cited in the poster. In addition to these sections, a research poster should also include clear and visually appealing graphics, such as tables, charts, and images, to help illustrate the key points and findings of the study. The poster should be well-organized, easy to read, and visually engaging to capture viewers' attention and effectively communicate the research findings.

How to Create a Poster in PowerPoint

Banner Image for the blog "How to Create a Poster in PowerPoint"

Posters are a fantastic way to showcase information in a clear, concise, and visually appealing way. Whether you’re presenting research findings, promoting an event, or simply sharing a cool infographic, PowerPoint can be a surprisingly powerful tool to bring your poster to life. Now, you might be wondering, “Isn’t PowerPoint mainly utilized for presentations?” Well, you’d be right! But PowerPoint’s ability to structure content, incorporate visuals, and finesse formatting makes it perfectly adaptable for crafting impactful posters. This guide will equip you with the knowledge to craft compelling posters that will stop viewers in their tracks.

Before We Begin: A Glimpse into Google Slides

For those more comfortable with web-based tools, we have a dedicated blog outlining the steps to creating stunning posters using Google Slides . Check it out if that’s your preferred platform.

Choosing the Right Canvas Size

PowerPoint slides are designed for presentations, not posters. The default size won’t do justice to your grand vision. Here’s how to adjust the canvas size for your masterpiece:

  • Go to the Design tab.
  • Click on Slide Size .
  • Select Custom Slide Size .
  • In the Width and Height boxes, enter the desired dimensions of your poster. Common poster sizes include A1 (33.11 x 23.39 inches) and A2 (46.81 x 16.54 inches). You can also choose a landscape or portrait orientation based on your content.

Setting custom poster size and orientation in MS PowerPoint from the "Slide Size" menu.

Planning the Layout

Before diving headfirst into design elements, take a moment to plan your poster’s layout. This helps ensure all the information is organized logically and easy for viewers to navigate. Here are some tips:

  • Identify Key Sections: Think about the information you want to convey and group it into sections like title, introduction, methodology (for research posters), results, conclusion, and contact details.
  • Visual Hierarchy: Prioritize the sections based on their importance. The title and key findings should be more prominent.
  • Balance is Key: Aim for a balanced layout that’s pleasing to the eye. Sketch a rough layout on paper or digitally to visualize the arrangement.

Adding Visuals and Text

With the foundation laid, it’s time to bring your poster to life with visuals and text. Here’s how:

  • Background: Choose a background color or image that complements your content and doesn’t overpower it. Solid colors often work well for research posters, while thematic images can add visual interest to event posters.
  • Captivating Images: Images are powerful tools for grabbing attention and illustrating your points. Use high-resolution images that are relevant to your subject matter.
  • Headlines that Hook: Craft a clear and concise title that piques viewers’ interest. Use large, easy-to-read fonts for the title and headings.
  • Body Text: Keep the body text clear, concise, and easy to understand. Use bullet points and short sentences to break up the text and improve readability. Consider using a slightly smaller font size compared to headings.

Formatting and Design Tools

PowerPoint offers a wealth of tools to enhance your poster’s design. Here are some handy features to explore:

  • Adding Images and Graphics: Images can breathe life into your poster and help convey your message more effectively. PowerPoint allows you to easily insert images from your computer or online sources. Simply click on the “Insert” tab, select “Pictures,” and choose the image you want to add. You can also add shapes, icons, and other graphics to spice up your design.
  • Playing with Fonts and Colors: Font choice and color scheme play a crucial role in poster design. Maintain consistency and readability by limiting to two or three complementary fonts. Experiment with different font sizes and styles to create hierarchy and emphasis. When it comes to colors, opt for a cohesive palette that aligns with your message and branding.
  • Shapes and Lines: Use shapes and lines to create sections, highlight key points, or add visual interest. Experiment with different shapes, sizes, and colors to create visually appealing divisions that draw attention to key points. By strategically placing lines throughout your poster, you can guide the viewer’s eye and create a sense of flow and cohesion in your design.
  • SmartArt: SmartArt graphics in PowerPoint is a powerful tool for visualizing complex information in a simple and engaging way. Utilize SmartArt to create charts, diagrams, and process flows that effectively communicate your message. With customizable colors, styles, and layouts, you can tailor your SmartArt graphics to match the tone and theme of your poster, adding depth and clarity to your presentation.
  • Alignment and Grouping: Ensure a clean and organized look by aligning text and image elements. Grouping related elements together allows you to manage them as a single unit, making it easier to move and manipulate them as needed. Whether you’re aligning text boxes, images, or shapes, taking the time to properly align and group elements will elevate the overall aesthetic of your poster.

Conclusion: Your Poster Awaits!

Creating a poster in PowerPoint is easier than you think. With the right tools and a bit of creativity, you can design eye-catching posters that leave a lasting impression. With a little planning and these handy tips, you’re well on your way to crafting a poster. Follow the steps outlined in this guide, and don’t hesitate to experiment with different layouts and designs. So, fire up PowerPoint, deliver your creativity, and get ready to showcase your work with confidence!
