Historical and Theoretical Roots of Systems Theory

Systems theory has a long history with regards to the prerogative of human beings to be self-defining and symbol making entities. The historical features are associated with the coming together of knowledge and understanding of parts concerning their whole. Such comprehension aims to highlight the totality of these parts and wholes in a meaningful manner.

The various historical periods are characterized by different solutions proposed to deal with the systems problem. According to Hammond (2002), when viewed from the context of history and evolution of social thought, it appears that the science related to unified systems theory is a product of 20 th -century thinking. However, rudiments of this concept are evident across the entire historical continuum of self-conscious human beings (Senge, Cambron-McCabe, Lucas, Smith & Dutton, 2012).

Hammond (2003) postulates that general systems theory is the solution to age-old questions regarding human existence in the 20 th century. The roots of such thinking can also be traced far back in history, depending on one’s definition of system and systems thinking. Hammond (2002) poses that the definition of systems theory as a new and unique world reflects the 20 th -century trappings of this concept. However, as a concept, the theory has its roots in classical times.

According to Bertalanffy (2004), general systems theory is defined as the new perspective of human knowledge about the self. Also, the theory is a response to four scientific inquiry problems of the middle 20 th century. The first question is that of duplication with regards to scientific investigations and discoveries (Bertalanffy, 2004). Some scientists who were unaware of previous investigations duplicated them. The second question entails the need for a universal theory of knowledge that can deal with various constructs. Such a construct includes directiveness, wholeness, differentiation, self-control, teleology, and regulation (Bertalanffy, 2004). The third question involves the need for the development of mechanics to expose various isomorphic (Bertalanffy, 2004). The isomorphic arose from the fact that under certain circumstances, corresponding abstractions and conceptual models can be used on different phenomena. The fourth question entails the development of a substitute path of inquiry to the mechanical and analytic pursuit of reductionism.

The System’s Concepts of Interconnectedness, Reinforcing Processes, Causal Loops, and System Archetypes

Systems theory has various underlying concepts that facilitate understanding of phenomena and entities. According to Wolstenholme (2003), all systems’ conceptualizations focus on simplifying reality. As such, dealing with realism becomes more effective. Consequently, systems concepts lead to systems dynamics. They give rise to models that resemble structural reality. The development makes constructs useful and consistent.

According to Senge et al. (2012), interconnectedness advances that problems and solutions in a system are closely bound. Consequently, analyzing a particular phenomenon should consider the intertwined aspect of the system dynamics. Interconnectedness can also be envisaged from the reinforcing processes.

According to Wolstenholme (2003), reinforcing processes or loops form the building blocks of dynamic systems. They facilitate and compound change in one direction. Consequently, the processes generate growth and collapse of systems. Causal loops, on the other hand, exhibit the interrelationships between variables in a system (Wolstenholme, 2003). For instance, a causal loop diagram of a system assumes the shape of a closed network. It depicts the link between cause and effect. Consequently, a reinforcing loop within a causal loop diagram depicts a reinforcing process, otherwise known as virtuous or vicious cycles (Wolstenholme, 2003).

Systems archetypes are essentially closed loop diagram structures. They show intended actions and unintended consequences. They also depict delays in reaction time (Wolstenholme, 2003). As such, systems archetypes reveal behavioral patterns that are usually counter-intuitive. The resulting phenomena can be used as diagnostic tools to provide insight into the underlying system structure.

The various concepts of a system reveal the dynamic nature of this phenomenon. In essence, systems concepts and dynamics provide individuals with ways though which to view ramifications. Also, simplifying ramifications through simulations makes it possible to test advanced hypotheses.

Systems Theory Definition and Analysis

Systems theory is a concept in biology and cybernetics that can be used in several diverse disciplines. It serves to explain relationships between separate components of one unity (a system, organization, or group of people). As it is known, a system is regulated by the structure and relationship patterns of all its elements. This paper will define the concept of systems theory and two of its basic principles.

To start with, a clear definition of the term “systems theory” should be given. The term takes its origin from the 1950s when it meant “systematic theoretical constructs to define the empirical world” in biology (Lai, 2017, p.1). According to a more precise definition, general systems theory provides “a framework or structure of systems on which to hang the flesh and blood of particular disciplines and particular subject matters in an orderly and coherent corpus of knowledge” (Lai, 2017, p.1). The main function of general systems theory is to explain the patterns of interactions used by the system components to execute the goals of the system. It also examines and predicts the way the system and its components respond to environmental changes and demands.

The systems theory concludes that four action stages serve to ensure the existence, homeostasis, and effectiveness of the system. These stages, designed to maintain equilibrium, include adaptation, goal attainment, pattern maintenance, and integration. Systems theory aims to explain dynamic relationships and interdependence between all elements that occur at each of these stages. Furthermore, the systems theory examines and explains the dependency between an organization and its environment.

The most important notion that relates to the systems’ relationships with the environment is one of the boundaries. All systems have their boundaries that are designed to define the flow of information within the system and maintain the homeostasis and the overall structure of the organization, even if the latter interacts with the world around it (Neukrug, 2016). At the same time, it should be mentioned that each system has its unique types of boundaries that might differ from all other systems (Neukrug, 2016). Therefore, the boundaries of one family would be completely different from the boundaries of the counseling group. For example, a workgroup might have rigid boundaries, while a loving family can have quite permeable boundaries. The author compares the notion of boundaries to the semipermeable boundaries that ensure nutrition that comes to amoeba from the environment (Neukrug, 2016). This notion is quite precise since the boundaries allow some amount of information to flow into the system.

Another principle of systems theory is homeostasis. Boundaries allow some new information to enter the system and be processed. However, the principle of homeostasis helps to maintain the sense of unity and identity and does not allow any changes to take place. Homeostasis prevents individuals from behaving in a manner that is not typical of the particular family or group. The reason for this important principle is that systems become comfortable with their typical ways of behaving. Therefore, members of the same system will exert overt or covert pressure to suppress those members who start to behave atypically for this particular system.

As can be seen, every system is regulated by specific patterns of the relationships between its elements. Two of the most important systems theory notions are the principle of homeostasis and boundaries. Systems theory is relevant to humans since it helps to examine and understand the most complex and essential interaction of systems, which then results in more effective human services.

Systems Theory essay

Systems theory is a large scale study of scientific procedures which encompass the complicated systems of fields in science, society, human behavior and nature (Heylighen, 1992). The theory is also referred to as the abstract composition and organization of events in space and existence (Heylighen, 1992). There are many benefits in understanding Systems Theory. Some of the main aspects of the study may even provide a greater understanding of the notion of conflict. For one, Systems Theory can provide the causality factor of a particular disagreement.

It can readily point out to certain factors in the spatial event which prompted why ideologies or existence conflict each other. For example, a friend of mine is not actually agreeing with my philosophy that Democrats are more favored than Republicans. The Systems Theory involved in this aspect is the social difference structures of the two parties. They have varying approaches for governance. On this aspect, Systems Theory can look for the possible intuition experiences which my friend and I have came across with resulting to why each one of us think in a different way.

It can be pointed out to media exposure or even family background influences. Another good example when Systems Theory can provide explanation about a conflict is its ability to stratify a system of influences to various segmented domains. The theory can readily identify the social or environmental factors which lead to the acceptance of a scientific principle, say for example why cloning is possible. In this aspect, Systems Theory provided the linking pathway interconnecting Biology, Chemistry, Morality and Ethics although each one of these scientific fields conflict each other in terms of subject discipline interests.

Understanding the connection between entities and events in the environment can sustain greater knowledge for human development. Systems Theory attempts to provide the bridging affirmative connection between entities which are primarily inter-related in producing a definite purpose.

In his systems’ theory, Luhmann attempts to redefine communication, and associates it with information. For Luhmann, communication is distinct from action ( Handeln ), and the rationality of the scientific system resides in the notion of Zweck, or in the ends of the sciences towards action. For the first time in the epistemological history of modernity, rationality is understood as a certain scientific purpose of action and not as the critique of scientific truth and validity of reason. The schism that Luhmann brought about between ‘traditional’ epistemology (reconsidered now as novel) and the ‘critical’ theory of science (seen by Luhmann as ‘traditional’) was irredeemable. In the following pages, I maintain that all evidence to the contrary such a divergence was inherent to modernity.Drawing on the Schützean model of multiple realities, Luhmann manages to blur the distinction between instrumentality and rationality by relativizing both within systemic complexity. According to Luhmann, complexity characterizes a multifaceted social system, such as science itself. However, I argue that where complexity, in Luhmann, interprets the systemic, it also employs presentism and partial situationalism to explain the essence and methodology of science as a system.

Title: atom-field-medium interactions i: graded influence actions for $n$ harmonic atoms in a dielectric-altered quantum field.

Abstract: This series of papers has two broader aims: 1) Construct a theory for multi-partite open quantum systems comprising several layers of structure with self-consistent back-actions. Develop the graded influence action formalism \cite{BehHu10,BH11} to account for the influences of successive sub-layers on the dynamics of the variables of interest. 2) Apply these methods to the study of atom-field-medium interactions and highlight their merits over conventional methods. We consider a system of $N$ harmonic oscillators, modeling the internal degrees of freedom (idf) of $N$ neutral atoms (A), interacting with a quantum field (F), scalar here, for simplicity, altered by the presence of a dielectric medium (M). In this paper we use the coarse-grained and stochastic effective actions in the influence functional formalism to derive the stochastic equations for the reduced density matrices of the dynamical variables in the successive layers of structure. The word `graded' refers to the specific ordering of the coarse-graining procedures. Three layers of coarse-graining are performed, firstly, integrating over the common bath of the dielectric oscillators results not only in the appearance of necessary dissipative properties of the dielectric but also essential nuanced features such as nonMarkovian spatial correlations in the dielectric. Secondly, integrating over the medium variables as a whole results in a dielectric-modified quantum field, the influence of the medium on the quantum field manifesting through a frequency-dependent permittivity function. Finally, integrating over this dielectric-altered quantum field which interacts with the idfs of the atoms yields an influence action. From it we obtain the stochastic equation of motion which describes the nonequilibrium stochastic dynamics of the idf of the atoms interacting with a dielectric medium-modified quantum field.

This introduction to the electro-gravitational theory seeks to shed light on some of the mysteries of contemporary physics. The text is composed of 12 chapters, each of which explores different aspects of the theory. In the first chapter, the "conversion factors" are introduced, which are dimensionless coefficients used to evaluate the effect of accelerated expansion of spacetime on measurements. In the second chapter, it is demonstrated that dark matter and dark energy do not exist, and the gravitational effects attributed to them are actually caused solely by ordinary matter. In the third and fourth chapters, Newton's theory of gravitation is first extended into the generalized gravitational theory and then into the generalized electro-gravitational theory. In the fifth chapter, Planck's law is derived from first principles. This implies that Planck's constant is no longer a fundamental constant but derivable from other constants.
