Louis Cole commands the pulpit as singers join in the performance at the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles. Jeff Berlin hide caption
On a recent Friday evening, a hooded figure in dark sunglasses climbed the pulpit at the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles. Just below, a few dozen singers gathered at the front of the packed sanctuary, conducted by a woman on stilts â elevated to see the choir in full.
This was a first for Louis Cole , the man in the pulpit. Cole is known primarily as a drummer, and his music over the past decade has fallen in the nexus of jazz, funk and rock, albeit with a flair thatâs hard to categorize. But now, Cole had given himself a new musical challenge, which might be best described by the tagline he included on the poster for this concert: âLouis Cole attempts to write new music for a choir.â
âIt is a new thing for me,â said Cole in an interview with All Things Considered host Ailsa Chang. âIâve always stacked my voice for my own harmonies, for my own music. But thatâs just me by myself. Itâs so different having a group of people, tuning with each other, singing with each other in the same space.â
The night of choral music wasnât the only new musical territory Cole had been testing out recently. He also just released a new album of orchestral music, called nothing , which was recorded with the conductor Jules Buckley and the Dutch orchestra Metropole Orkest .
All Things Considered caught up with Cole in the sanctuary of the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles as he was prepping for his show of choral music, and probed the musician about his creative process, the challenges of arranging for an orchestra, and the classic look of a Halloween-style skeleton suit.
"Things Will Fall Apart" from Louis Cole's new album nothing .
This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.
Ailsa Chang : You never get bored. Youâre always making sure you donât get bored, it seems like.
Louis Cole : Yeah, I donât have any vices, I just like making music. Thatâs how I grab⌠I donât want to sound pretentious, but itâs how I grab magic out of the boring air around me. I think thatâs my vice. Thatâs all I do. I mean, thatâs really what I enjoy.
Chang : This new album is unlike anything else youâve ever done. You worked with a Dutch orchestra, the Metropole Orkest, and the conductor Jules Buckley. Had you ever written arrangements for an orchestra before?
Cole : No, I never had. Iâd written arrangements for little sections of, you know, string players or horns or something like that. But never a full orchestra, which is really a different thing. Itâs like everyone, all the instruments playing at once. Iâve really spent a long time listening to music like this, but I donât really know how to do it. But Iâm gonna just do it.
A sibling spark fuels isata kanneh-masonâs 'mendelssohn' album.
Chang : Youâre also this really prolific collaborator. Like, beyond this album with Jules Buckley and the Metropole Orkest, youâve worked with Thundercat , the pianist Brad Mehldau , your longtime collaborator Genevieve Artadi, loads of other people. And it made me wonder â you seem to have such a specific musical vision for each of your songs, how do you stay true to that vision while incorporating the musical brains of all these other people?
Cole : Because Iâm a gigantic control freak [whoâs] really hard to work with. Thatâs how I do it. Thatâs my secret.
Chang : So the people you work with just put up with your dominance.
Cole : Oh yeah. Definitely. Itâs like, "Oh I have this vision, it needs to be this, otherwise Iâm just gonna do it myself." Usually when Iâm collaborating with someone, like even in these orchestra rehearsals with Metropole, even if they changed one note, Iâd be like "Whatâs that? What was that? Can we go back? What is that? Who did that?" You know? And then Iâm like, "Can we change it back?"
Chang : But you keep working with bigger and bigger groups of people. Why would you do that, like include more and more minds and musicians into your world when, in this day and age, you could just manufacture all of that?
Cole : I still think that the energy of a group and the sound of a group can never be fully emulated with⌠I dunno, Iâm gonna sound like an old guy⌠like computers, digital technology. Like, I think there is some magic in there that really does come across still. And I think thereâs also the experience of doing it. Working with a group of people, itâs just like, "Wow, I really love doing this. This is fun. I spiritually feel good doing this." But the sound of it, too. I think there is some magic thatâs actually tangible in there, and whether you notice it right away or not, I do think it is in there, and I think itâs special.
Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate on Tuesday, choosing a progressive yet plain-spoken VP candidate from Americaâs heartland to help her win over rural, white voters.
âIâm pleased to share that Iâve made my decision: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will join our campaign as my running mate,â Harris said via text to supporters. âTim is a battle-tested leader who has an incredible track record of getting things done for Minnesota families. I know that he will bring that same principled leadership to our campaign, and to the office of the vice president.â
We look at Walz, a 60-year-old U.S. Army National Guard veteran, and his military career over the years.
More: Tim Walz is Kamala Harris' VP pick: Minnesota governor named running mate: Live updates
Walz served in the military for 24 years, enlisting in the Nebraska National Guard at 17 in 1981 and then transferring to the Minnesota National Guard in 1996. He retired in 2005 to begin his successful run for the U.S. House, representing Minnesota as command sergeant major, among the highest ranks for enlisted soldiers. His battalion went on to deploy to Iraq shortly after Walz's retirement.
Walz specialized in heavy artillery and had proficiency ribbons in sharpshooting and hand grenades.
But during the 21 years that Walz spent working with large artillery pieces, he suffered hearing loss and tinnitus in both ears, Minnesota Public Radio reported. He was allowed to continue his service after undergoing surgery, which partially resolved his hearing loss.
During his service, Walz responded to natural disasters, including floods and tornadoes in Minnesota and Nebraska, and was deployed overseas for months at a time, according to MPR.
In 2003, he was sent to Italy, where he served with the European Security Force to support the war in Afghanistan. He was also stationed in Norway for joint training with other NATO militaries.
Walz told MPR that he reenlisted in the National Guard after the September 11 attacks but never saw active combat in his years in the military.
Stars and Stripes reported in 2020 that Walz credited his Army experience with helping him steer Minnesota through the COVID-19 pandemic as governor.
As governor of Minnesota, Walz is commander in chief of the 13,000-soldier Minnesota National Guard. âIâm certainly proud of my military service, but itâs one piece of me,â he told Minnesota Public Radio in 2018. âIt doesnât define me.â

Greg Kihn , the rock singer-songwriter who scored with “Jeopardy” and “The Breakup Song (They Don’t Write ‘Em)” and helped definite an era of power pop in the 1980s, died Tuesday at age 75, his family announced in a statement. The cause of death was complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
Reality check: summer hot streak wonât dig u.s. box office out of deep hole in 2024, george clooney got 'irritated' when quentin tarantino allegedly said he wasn't a movie star: 'dude, f--- off. i donât mind giving him s---â.
“We weren’t like the other SF bands,” Kihn said in a 2018 interview . “Our music was derived from the British bands like the Who and the Faces. We were always writing new songs, and the fans came back week after week to see what we’d come up with. It was all about the songs, not the jamming.
Before moving to San Francisco in 1972, Kihn grew up in Baltimore, and won a talent contest sponsored by a local radio station while still in high school. He signed with Beserkley in 1973, though it would not be till 1976 that he released his first album, “Greg Kihn.”
Eventually he established a pattern of pun-fueled titles, with album releases that included “Next of Kihn” (1978), “RocKihnRoll” (1981), “Kihntinued” (1982), “Kihntagious” 1984) and “Rekihndled” (2017).
Kihn also published six novels, starting with “Horror Show” in 1996.
Kihn was also pleased when “The Breakup Song” got picked up for “Grand Theft Auto V,” saying the song “is attracting a whole generation of fans and it’s very exciting. The song has endured many years and shows no signs of slowing down. It fits well in the game and I am proud to be part of it.”
He was the first to record a Bruce Springsteen song, “Rendezvous,” thanks to the Boss being a fan. Kihn admitted he sang the words wrong, which involved a funny story. “Bruce would start showing up the gigs and he showed up when we played at the Roxy in L.A.,” he recalled in a 2019 interview . “And here comes Bruce and he’s hanging backstage with us and he loved my version of ‘For You,’ so (he says) ‘I want to give you another song’ — it was ‘Rendezvous.’ So he writes the lyrics on a napkin from the Roxy. I stick it in my pocket. In those days we had to do an early show and a late show, and I sweated like a pig! Well, I go out there and when I go back to the hotel I reach in my pocket to look at the lyrics and it’s white pulp. I was freaking out and I go, ‘Oh my God, Springsteen gave me a song and now I can’t do it!’ So I called Jon Landau’s office and explained Bruce gave me the song and he says, ‘Okay, no problem I’m going to send you a cassette,’ so he sends me a cassette which I must’ve listened to a million times…
“Bruce is not really known for his diction, and there were some lyrics I could not figure out what he was saying, like the bridge totally sounds to me like he’s singing ‘And we desire so much more than squirrels’ — I can’t be right. I played that cassette 1000 times for everybody that I knew… the guys in the band go ‘Yeah, it’s squirrels, it got to be squirrels.’ So I tried to slur my voice when I did it… I didn’t really sing it either way, but I knew it wasn’t squirrels. So a year later Springsteen shows up at a gig and goes, ‘Hey Greg, there ain’t no squirrels in that song.'”
He was a morning radio host for KFOX for 18 years, beginning in 1996, as well as a syndicated nighttime radio host. “Of course, while I was there, it had been bought and sold many times: Clear Channel, Intercom, Cumulus, all these different various ownerships, and they moved it to San Francisco to a high rise up there, a penthouse suite of radio stations… I had great ratings, everything, but I think they fired me because they were paying me too much money for too long, and I can totally understand that.” But, he noted, “The day that I got fired was the day I got inducted into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame. So go figure.”
A private memorial celebration for friends and family is expected to be followed by public celebration of life concert for fans and fellow musicians, with details to be announced.
