Building a Successful Business Plan

In the next section, we'll cover the components of a business plan , such as an executive summary and company description. But before we get to that, let's talk about key elements that should serve as building blocks for your plan.

For some entrepreneurs, the thought of writing a business plan sounds like a chore — a necessary means to an end. But that's a bad take.

A solid business plan is a blueprint for success . It's key to securing financing, presenting your business, outlining your financial projections, and turning that nugget of a business idea into a reality.

At the core, your business plan should answer two questions: why your business and why now?

Investors want to know why your business is entering the market, i.e. what problem it's solving and how it's different from what's currently out there. They also want to know why now is the right time for your type of product or service.

At a minimum, your plan should:

  • Be more realistic than idealistic: Too often, business plans focus too much on how things could be instead of how they are. While having a vision is important, your plan needs to be rooted in research and data.
  • Legitimize your business idea : If an idea fails on paper, it's a signal to go back to the drawing board. In doing so, you avoid losing precious time or money chasing an unrealistic idea.
  • Position your business for funding: To get your business off the ground, chances are you'll need financial backing. Even with a solid business idea, investors, lenders, and banks still need convincing. An effective business plan will outline how much money you need, where it's going, what targets you will hit, and how you plan to repay any debts.
  • Lay the foundation: Investors focus on risk – if anything looks shaky, it could be a dealbreaker. Ideally, your business plan will lay down the foundation for how you'll operate your business — from operational needs to financial projections and goals.
  • Communicate your needs: It's nearly impossible to communicate your needs if you don't know what they are first. Of course, a business’ needs are always changing — but your plan should give you a well-rounded view of how your business will work in the short and long term.

So back to the question of why and why now – consider three things:

  • Your industry – How does your product or service fit within your industry? Are you targeting a specific niche? Where do you see the industry going in the next five to 10 years?
  • Your target audience – Who are you targeting? What challenges are they facing? How will your product or service help them in their daily lives?
  • Your unique selling proposition (USP) – What sets you apart from your competitors? Is it your product/service features? Your company values? Price?

Once you know the answers to these questions, you'll be equipped to answer the question: why your business and why now.

1. cover page.

Your business plan should be prefaced with an eye-catching cover page. This means including a high-resolution image of your company logo, followed by your company's name, address, and phone number.

Since this business plan will likely change hands and be seen by multiple investors, you should also provide your own name, role in the business, and email address on the cover page.

At the bottom of this page, you can also add a confidentiality statement to protect against the disclosure of your business details.

The statement can read as follows: " This document contains confidential and proprietary information created by [your company name]. When receiving this document, you agree to keep its content confidential and may only reproduce and/or share it with express written permission of [your company name] ."

Remember to keep your cover page simple and concise — and save the important details for other sections.

Why it matters: First impressions are everything, and a clean cover page is the first step in the right direction.

2. Executive Summary

The executive summary of your business plan provides a one- to two-page overview of your business and highlights the most crucial pieces of your plan, such as your short-term and long-term goals.

The executive summary is essentially a boiled-down version of your entire business plan, so remember to keep this section to the point and filled only with essential information.

Typically, this brief section includes:

  • A mission statement.
  • The company's history and leadership model.
  • An overview of competitive advantage(s).
  • Financial projections.
  • Company goals.
  • An ask from potential investors.

Why it matters: The executive summary is known as the make-or-break section of a business plan. It influences whether investors turn the page or not — so effectively summarizing your business and the problem it hopes to solve is a must.

Think of the Summary as a written elevator pitch (with more detail). While your business plan provides the nitty-gritty details, your Summary describes — in a compelling but matter-of-fact language — the highlights of your plan. If it's too vague, complicated, or fuzzy, you may need to scrap it and start again.

"The future looks bright for North Side Chicago, particularly the Rock Hill Neighborhood. A number of high-end commercial and residential developments are well on their way, along with two new condo developments in nearby neighborhoods.

While the completion of these developments will increase the population within the neighborhood and stimulate the economy, the area lacks an upscale restaurant where residents and visitors can enjoy fine food and drink. Jay Street Lounge and Restaurant will provide such a place."

3. Company & Business Description

In this section, provide a more thorough description of what your company is and why it exists.

The bulk of the writing in this section should be about your company's purpose – covering what the business will be selling, identifying the target market, and laying out a path to success.

In this portion of your business plan, you can also elaborate on your company's:

  • Mission statement
  • Core values
  • Team and organizational structure

Why it matters: Investors look for great structures and teams in addition to great ideas. This section gives an overview of your businesses' ethos. It's the perfect opportunity to set your business apart from the competition — such as your team's expertise, your unique work culture, and your competitive advantage.

Example of a Values/Mission Statement

"Jay Street Lounge and Restaurant will be the go-to place for people to get a drink or bite in an elegant, upscale atmosphere. The mission is to be North Side's leading restaurant, with the best tasting food and the highest quality service."

3. Product & Services Line

Here's where you'll cover the makeup of your business's product and/or services line. You should provide each product or service's name, its purpose, and a description of how it works (if appropriate). If you own any patents, copyrights, or trademarks, it's essential to include this info too.

Next, add some color to your sales strategy by outlining your pricing model and mark-up amounts.

If you're selling tangible products, you should also explain production and costs, and how you expect these factors to change as you scale.

Why it matters: This section contains the real meat of your business plan. It sets the stage for the problem you hope to solve, your solution, and how your said solution fits in the market.

There's no one-size-fits-all formula for this section. For instance, one plan may delve into its ability to market in a more cost-effective way than the competition, whereas another plan focuses on its key products and their unique features and benefits.

Regardless of your angle, it's critical to convey how your offerings will differ from the competition.

Example of a Product/Service Offering

"The menu at Jay Street Lounge and Restaurant will focus on Moroccan cuisine. The stars of the menu (our specialties) are the Moroccan dishes, such as eggplant zaalouk, seafood bastilla, tagine, and chickpea stew. For those who enjoy American dishes, there will also be a variety of options, from burger sliders and flatbread pizza to grilled steak and salads.

The food at Jay Street will have premium pricing to match its upscale atmosphere. During the summer months, the restaurant will have extra seating on the patio where clients can enjoy a special summer menu. We will be open on all days of the week."

4. Market Analysis

It helps to reference your market research documentation in this section, like a Porter's Five Forces Analysis or a SWOT Analysis ( templates for those are available here ). You can also include them in your appendix.

Why it matters: Having an awesome product is, well, awesome — but it isn't enough. Just as important, there must be a market for it.

This section allows you to dig deeper into your market, which segments you want to target, and why. The "why" here is important, since targeting the right segment is critical for the success and growth of your business.

It's easy to get lost (or overwhelmed) in a sea of endless data. For your business plan, narrow your focus by answering the following questions:

  • What is my market? In other words, who are my customers?
  • What segments of the market do I want to target?
  • What's the size of my target market?
  • Is my market likely to grow?
  • How can I increase my market share over time?

Example of a Market Analysis

"Jay Street Lounge and Restaurant will target locals who live and work within the Rock Hill Neighborhood and the greater North Side Chicago area. We will also target the tourists who flock to the many tourist attractions and colleges on the North Side.

We will specifically focus on young to middle-aged adults with an income of $40,000 to $80,000 who are looking for an upscale experience. The general demographics of our target market are women between 20 to 50 years old.

A unique and varied Moroccan-American menu, along with our unique upscale atmosphere, differentiates us from competitors in the area. Jay Street will also set itself apart through its commitment to high-quality food, service, design, and atmosphere."

5. Marketing Plan

Unlike the market analysis section, your marketing plan section should be an explanation of the tactical approach to reaching your aforementioned target audience. List your advertising channels, organic marketing methods, messaging, budget, and any relevant promotional tactics.

Why it matters: Marketing is what puts your product in front of your customers. It's not just advertising — it's an investment in your business.

Throwing money into random marketing channels is a haphazard approach, which is why it's essential to do the legwork to create a solid marketing plan.

Here's some good news — by this point, you should have a solid understanding of your target market. Now, it's time to determine how you'll reach them.

"Our marketing strategy will focus on three main initiatives:

  • Social media marketing. We will grow and expand our Facebook and Instagram following through targeted social media ads.
  • Website initiatives. Our website will attract potential visitors by offering updated menus and a calendar of events.
  • Promotional events. Jay Street will have one special theme night per week to attract new clients."

6. Sales Plan

It doesn't matter if your sales department is an office full of business development representatives (BDR) or a dozen stores with your products on their shelves.

The point is: All sales plans are different, so you should clearly outline yours here. Common talking points include your:

  • Sales team structure, and why this structure was chosen.
  • Sales channels.
  • Sales tools, software, and resources.
  • Prospecting strategy.
  • Sales goals and budget.

Like with your marketing plan, it might make sense to attach your completed sales plan to the appendix of your business plan. You can download a template for building your sales plan here .

Why it matters: Among other things, investors are interested in the scalability of your business — which is why growth strategies are a critical part of your business plan.

Your sales plan should describe your plan to attract customers, retain them (if applicable), and, ultimately, grow your business. Be sure to outline what you plan to do given your existing resources and what results you expect from your work.

"The most important goal is to ensure financial success for Jay Street Lounge and Restaurant. We believe we can achieve this by offering excellent food, entertainment, and service to our clients.

We are not a low-cost dining option in the area. Instead, the food will have premium pricing to match its upscale feel. The strategy is to give Jay Street a perception of elegance through its food, entertainment, and excellent service."

7. Legal Notes

Your investors may want to know the legal structure of your business, as that could directly impact the risk of their investments. For example, if you're looking for business partners to engage in a non-corporation or LLC partnership, this means they could be on the line for more than their actual investment.

Because this clarification is often needed, explain if you are and/or plan to become a sole proprietor, partnership, corporation, LLC, or other.

You should also outline the steps you have taken (or will need to take) to operate legally. This includes licenses, permits, registrations, and insurance.

The last thing your investor wants to hear after they've sent you a big chunk of change is that you're operating without proper approval from the local, state, or federal government.

"Jay Street Lounge and Restaurant is up-to-date on all restaurant licenses and health permits. Our business name and logo are registered trademarks, presenting the possibility of expanding locally."

8. Financial Considerations

Ultimately, investors want to know two things:

  • When they will earn their money back.
  • When they will start seeing returns on their initial investment.

That said, be clear, calculated, and convincing in this section. It should cover:

  • Startup costs.
  • Sales forecasts for the next several months/quarters.
  • Break-even analysis for time and dollars.
  • Projected profit and loss (P&L) statement.

Facts and figures are key here, so be as specific as possible with each line item and projection. In addition, explain the "why" behind each of these sections.

However, keep in mind that information overload is a risk, especially when it comes to data. So, if you have pages upon pages of charts and spreadsheets for this section, distill them into a page or two and include the rest of the sheets in the appendix. This section should only focus on key data points.

Why it matters: One of the most important aspects of becoming "investor ready" is knowing your numbers. More importantly, you need to understand how those numbers will enhance your business.

While it's easy to write a number down on paper, it's more important to understand (and communicate) why you need capital, where it's going, and that your evaluation makes sense.

Example of Financial Projections

"Based on our knowledge and experience in the restaurant industry, we have come up with projections for the business.

Starting with an expenditure of $400,000 in year 1, we forecast sales of $1,500,000 and $2,800,000 for years two and three. We expect to achieve a net profit of 15% by year three."

9. Appendix

A detailed and well-developed business plan can range anywhere from 20 to 50 pages, with some even reaching upward of 80.

In many cases, the appendix is the longest section. Why? Because it includes the supportive materials mentioned in previous sections. To avoid disrupting the flow of the business plan with visuals, charts, and spreadsheets, business owners usually add them in the last section, i.e. the appendix.

Aside from what we've already mentioned – marketing plan, sales plan, department budgets, financial documents – you may also want to attach the following in the appendix:

  • Marketing materials
  • Market research data
  • Licensing documentation
  • Branding assets
  • Floor plans for your location
  • Mockups of your product
  • Renderings of your office space or location design

Adding these pieces to the appendix enriches the reader's understanding of your business and proves you've put the work into your business plan without distracting from the main points throughout the plan.

Why it matters: An appendix helps the reader do their due diligence. It contains everything they need to support your business plan.

Keep in mind, however, that an appendix is typically necessary only if you're seeking financing or looking to attract business partners.

The pre-set structure helps you organize ideas, covers all critical business information, and saves you time and effort on formatting.

So, which ones are actually worth using? 

To help remove the guesswork, I’ve rounded up some of the best business plan templates you can access right now. 

These are listed in no particular order, and each has its benefits and drawbacks.

What to look for in a business plan template

Not all business plan templates are created equal. As you weigh your options and decide which template(s) you’ll use, be sure to review them with the following criteria in mind:

  • Easy to edit: A template should save you time. That won’t be the case if you have to fuss around figuring out how to edit the document, or even worse, it doesn’t allow you to edit at all.
  • Contains the right sections: A good template should cover all essential sections of a business plan , including the executive summary, product/service description, market/competitive analysis, marketing and sales plan, operations, milestones, and financial projections. 
  • Provides guidance: You should be able to trust that the information in a template is accurate. That means the organization or person who created the template is highly credible, known for producing useful resources, and ideally has some entrepreneurial experience.
  • Software compatibility: Lastly, you want any template to be compatible with the software platforms you use. More than likely, this means it’s available in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or PDF format at a minimum.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) offers two different business plan templates along with a short planning guide. 

While not incredibly in-depth, it’s enough to help you understand how traditional and lean plans are structured and what information needs to be covered. The templates themselves are more like examples, providing you with a finished product to reference as you write your plan.

The key benefit of using these templates is that they were created by the SBA. While they may provide less guidance, you can be assured that the information and structure meet their expectations.

3. SCORE — Planning workbook

SCORE’s template is more like a workbook. It includes exercises after each section to help you get your ideas down and turn them into a structured plan.

The market research worksheets are especially useful. They provide a clear framework for identifying your target market and analyzing competitors from multiple angles. Plus, they give you an easy way to document all the information you’re collecting.

You will likely have to remove the exercises in this template to make it investor-ready. But it can be worth it if you’re struggling to get past a blank page and want a more interactive planning method.

4. PandaDoc — A template with fillable forms

PandaDoc’s library offers a variety of industry-specific business plan templates that feature a modern design flair and concise instructions. 

These templates are designed for sharing. They include fillable fields and sections for non-disclosure agreements, which may be necessary when sending a plan to investors.  

But the real benefit is their compatibility with PandaDoc’s platform. Yes, they are free, but if you’re a PandaDoc subscriber, you’ll have far more customization options. 

Out of all their templates, the standard business plan template is the most in-depth. The rest, while still useful, go a bit lighter on guidance in favor of tailoring the plan to a specific industry.

5. Canva — Pitch with your plan

A sample of the 696 free business plan templates available from Canva. The templates represented here are for a restaurant and two options designed around a minimalist beige aesthetic.

Canva is a great option for building a visually stunning business plan that can be used as a pitch tool. It offers a diverse array of templates built by their in-house team and the larger creative community, meaning the number of options constantly grows.

You will need to verify that the information in the template you choose matches the standard structure of a traditional business plan. 

You should do this with any template, but it’s especially important with any tool that accepts community submissions. While they are likely reviewed and approved, there may still be errors.

Remember, you can only edit these templates within Canva. Luckily, you only need a free subscription, and you may just miss out on some of the visual assets being used. 

To get the most value, it may be best to create a more traditional planning document and transfer that information into Canva.

6. ClickUp — The collaborative template

Out of all the project management tools that offer free business plan templates, ClickUp’s is the most approachable.

Rather than throwing you into all the features and expecting you to figure it out—ClickUp provides a thorough startup guide with resource links, images, and videos explaining how to write a plan using the tool. 

There’s also a completed sample plan (structured like an expanded one-page plan) for you to reference and see how the more traditional document can connect to the product management features. You can set goals, target dates, leave comments, and even assign tasks to someone else on your team. 

These features are limited to the ClickUp platform and will not be useful for everyone. They will likely get in the way of writing a plan you can easily share with lenders or investors. 

But this is a great option if you’re looking for a template that makes internal collaboration more fluid and keeps all your information in one place.

7. Smartsheet — A wide variety of templates

A preview of the Smartsheet business plan template. It provides a preview of the cover page, directory, and small views of the remaining template pages.

I’m including Smartsheet’s library of templates on this list because of the sheer number of options they provide. 

They have a simple business plan template, a one-page plan, a fill-in-the-blank template, a plan outline, a plan grading rubric, and even an Excel-built project plan. All are perfectly usable and vary in visual style, depth of instructions, and the available format.

Honestly, the only drawback (which is also the core benefit) is that the amount of templates can be overwhelming. If you’re already uncertain which plan option is right for you, the lengthy list they provide may not provide much clarity.

At the same time, it can be a great resource if you want a one-stop shop to view multiple plan types.

8. ReferralRock affiliate marketing business plan

I’m adding ReferralRock’s template to this list due to its specificity. 

It’s not your standard business plan template. The plan is tailored with specific sections and guidance around launching an affiliate marketing business. 

Most of the template is dedicated to defining how to choose affiliates, set commissions, create legal agreements, and track performance.

So, if you plan on starting an affiliate marketing business or program, this template will provide more specific guidance. Just know that you will likely need to reference additional resources when writing the non-industry sections of your plan.

Does it matter what business plan template you use?

The short answer is no. As long as the structure is correct, it saves you time, and it helps you write your business plan , then any template will work. 

What it ultimately comes down to, is what sort of value you hope to get from the template. 

  • Do you need more guidance? 
  • A simple way to structure your plan? 
  • An option that works with a specific tool?
  • A way to make your plan more visually interesting?

Hopefully, this list has helped you hone in on an option that meets one (or several) of these needs. Still, it may be worth downloading a few of these templates to determine the right fit.

Your executive summary highlights key points of your plan. Consider this your elevator pitch. You want to put all your juiciest strengths and opportunities strategically in this section.

2. Business Overview

In this section, you can dive deeper into the elements of your business, including answering:

  • What’s your business structure? Sole proprietorship, LLC, corporation, etc.
  • Where is it located?
  • Who owns the business? Does it have employees?
  • What problem does it solve, and how?
  • What’s your mission statement? Your mission statement briefly describes why you are in business. To write a proper mission statement, brainstorm your business’s core values and who you serve.

Don’t overlook your mission statement. This powerful sentence or paragraph could be the inspiration that drives an investor to take an interest in your business. Here are a few examples of powerful mission statements that just might give you the goosebumps:

  • Patagonia: Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.

  • What services you sell: Describe the services you provide and how these will help your target audience.

Your market analysis essentially explains how your products and services address customer concerns and pain points. This section will include research and data on the state and direction of your industry and target market.

This research should reveal lucrative opportunities and how your business is uniquely positioned to seize the advantage. You’ll also want to touch on your marketing strategy and how it will (or does) work for your audience.

Include a detailed analysis of your target customers. This describes the people you serve and sell your product to. Be careful not to go too broad here—you don’t want to fall into the common entrepreneurial trap of trying to sell to everyone and thereby not differentiating yourself enough to survive the competition.

The market analysis section will include your unique value proposition. Your unique value proposition (UVP) is the thing that makes you stand out from your competitors. This is your key to success.

5. Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis examines the strengths and weaknesses of competing businesses in your market or industry. This will include direct and indirect competitors. It can also include threats and opportunities, like economic concerns or legal restraints.

The best way to sum up this section is with a classic SWOT analysis. This will explain your company’s position in relation to your competitors.

6. Financial Strategy

Your financial strategy will sum up your revenue, expenses, profit (or loss), and financial plan for the future. It’ll explain how you make money, where your cash flow goes, and how you’ll become profitable or stay profitable.

This is one of the most important sections for lenders and investors. Have you ever watched Shark Tank? They always ask about the company’s financial situation. How has it performed in the past? What’s the ongoing outlook moving forward? How does the business plan to make it happen?

Answer all of these questions in your financial strategy so that your audience doesn’t have to ask. Go ahead and include forecasts and graphs in your plan, too:

  • Balance sheet: This includes your assets, liabilities, and equity.
  • Profit & Loss (P&L) statement: This details your income and expenses over a given period.
  • Cash flow statement: Similar to the P&L, this one will show all cash flowing into and out of the business each month.

It takes cash to change the world—lenders and investors get it. If you’re short on funding, explain how much money you’ll need and how you’ll use the capital. Where are you looking for financing? Are you looking to take out a business loan, or would you rather trade equity for capital instead?

Step 1: Executive Summary

The executive summary will always be the first section of your business plan. The goal is to answer the following questions:

  • What is the vision and mission of the company?
  • What are the company’s short- and long-term goals?

Step 2: Description of Business

The goal of this section is to define the realm, scope, and intent of your venture. To do so, answer the following questions as clearly and concisely as possible:

  • What business are we in?
  • What does our business do?

Step 3: Market Analysis

In this section, provide evidence that you have surveyed and understand the current marketplace, and that your product or service satisfies a niche in the market. To do so, answer these questions:

  • Who is our customer? 
  • What does that customer value?

Step 4: Competitive Analysis

In many cases, a business plan proposes not a brand-new (or even market-disrupting) venture, but a more competitive version — whether via features, pricing, integrations, etc. — than what is currently available. In this section, answer the following questions to show that your product or service stands to outpace competitors:

  • Who is the competition? 
  • What do they do best? 
  • What is our unique value proposition?

Step 5: Description of Organizational Management

In this section, write an overview of the team members and other key personnel who are integral to success. List roles and responsibilities, and if possible, note the hierarchy or team structure.

Step 6: Description of Products or Services

In this section, clearly define your product or service, as well as all the effort and resources that go into producing it. The strength of your product largely defines the success of your business, so it’s imperative that you take time to test and refine the product before launching into marketing, sales, or funding details.

Questions to answer in this section are as follows:

  • What is the product or service?
  • How do we produce it, and what resources are necessary for production?

Step 7: Marketing Plan

In this section, define the marketing strategy for your product or service. This doesn’t need to be as fleshed out as a full marketing plan , but it should answer basic questions, such as the following:

  • Who is the target market (if different from existing customer base)?
  • What channels will you use to reach your target market?
  • What resources does your marketing strategy require, and do you have access to them?
  • If possible, do you have a rough estimate of timeline and budget?
  • How will you measure success?

Step 8: Sales Plan

Write an overview of the sales strategy, including the priorities of each cycle, steps to achieve these goals, and metrics for success. For the purposes of a business plan, this section does not need to be a comprehensive, in-depth sales plan , but can simply outline the high-level objectives and strategies of your sales efforts. 

Start by answering the following questions:

  • What is the sales strategy?
  • What are the tools and tactics you will use to achieve your goals?
  • What are the potential obstacles, and how will you overcome them?
  • What is the timeline for sales and turning a profit?
  • What are the metrics of success?

Step 9: Funding Details (or Request for Funding)

This section is one of the most critical parts of your business plan, particularly if you are sharing it with investors. You do not need to provide a full financial plan, but you should be able to answer the following questions:

  • How much capital do you currently have? How much capital do you need?
  • How will you grow the team (onboarding, team structure, training and development)?
  • What are your physical needs and constraints (space, equipment, etc.)?

Step 10: Financial Projections

  • Do Adequate Research: Michael Dean, the Co-Founder of Pool Research , encourages business leaders to “invest time in research, both internal and external (market, finance, legal etc.). Avoid being overly ambitious or presumptive. Instead, keep everything objective, balanced, and accurate.” Your plan needs to stand on its own, and you must have the data to back up any claims or forecasting you make. As Brodsky explains, “Your business needs to be grounded on the realities of the market in your chosen location. Get the most recent data from authoritative sources so that the figures are vetted by experts and are reliable.”
  • Set Clear Goals: Make sure your plan includes clear, time-based goals. “Short-term goals are key to momentum growth and are especially important to identify for new businesses,” advises Dean.
  • Know (and Address) Your Weaknesses: “This awareness sets you up to overcome your weak points much quicker than waiting for them to arise,” shares Dean. Brodsky recommends performing a full SWOT analysis to identify your weaknesses, too. “Your business will fare better with self-knowledge, which will help you better define the mission of your business, as well as the strategies you will choose to achieve your objectives,” he adds.
  • Seek Peer or Mentor Review: “Ask for feedback on your drafts and for areas to improve,” advises Brodsky. “When your mind is filled with dreams for your business, sometimes it is an outsider who can tell you what you’re missing and will save your business from being a product of whimsy.”

Outside of these more practical tips, the language you use is also important and may make or break your business plan.

Shaun Heng, VP of Operations at Coin Market Cap , gives the following advice on the writing, “Your business plan is your sales pitch to an investor. And as with any sales pitch, you need to strike the right tone and hit a few emotional chords. This is a little tricky in a business plan, because you also need to be formal and matter-of-fact. But you can still impress by weaving in descriptive language and saying things in a more elegant way.

“A great way to do this is by expanding your vocabulary, avoiding word repetition, and using business language. Instead of saying that something ‘will bring in as many customers as possible,’ try saying ‘will garner the largest possible market segment.’ Elevate your writing with precise descriptive words and you'll impress even the busiest investor.”

Additionally, Dean recommends that you “stay consistent and concise by keeping your tone and style steady throughout, and your language clear and precise. Include only what is 100 percent necessary.”

Your startup business plan must have an executive summary. This should be the introduction of your document — one that provides readers with a clear overview of the main points of the business plan. It allows the reader, who might be an extremely busy bank manager, to understand the key aspects of your new venture in a quick read.

Ideally speaking, you should summarize each of the following sections in one short paragraph:

  • Give an elevator pitch and describe the startup in brief
  • Give a summary of the market research or analysis done by your team
  • Mention the problem(s) your product or service will solve
  • Describe concisely how your startup’s offering will solve the aforementioned problem
  • Introduce the key people behind your startup
  • Describe the financial plan in brief

Once you’ve done all this, it’s time to close the executive summary. The closing is every bit as important as the opening, so make it clear, distinct, and persuasive. You should close the summary by providing a clear, yet concise, explanation of the project, why the project is required, and how it is going to benefit both the customers and the investors. Moreover, if you are planning to raise funds from investors , it is a good idea to state here the amount you are looking for and the amount of shares you are willing to give away.

Business Plan Template for Startup: The Problem Opportunity

Your startup exists because there is a gap in the market that has not yet been filled, right? Describe this need in this section. Talk about how the need arose and what are the reasons it has not yet been fulfilled.

Pro tip: You should keep this particular section short. That’s because the main focus of your startup business plan should be on the solution, which you will touch upon in detail in the next section.

Business Plan Template for Startup: The Solution

After laying out the various problems experienced by your target customers, now is the time to describe how your offering solves them. For each problem previously stated, mention the solution you bring to the table. The next two sections define your unique selling proposition and articulate further the features of your products and services.

Your Startup’s Mission Statement, Vision & Goals

State your startup’s mission, that is, the reason why your business venture exists and why it does what it does. Furthermore, share the company’s core values.

Then, mention your startup’s vision and goals. The vision usually summarizes the long-term goals of your company. Where do you see this business in five years from now? Ten years from now? Then show how your vision fits with your core values.

Your goals should be divided into short-term objectives and longer-term ones. Keep this part of your plan brief. The remaining sections will give you ample opportunity to delve deeper into the details.

Your Startup’s Business Model

Define here your business model by describing how your startup plans to capture and produce value, and generate money by interacting with various market actors and stakeholders. For an effective yet concise representation, we recommend you to use the business model canvas method that uses nine pillars to describe your business model.

Your Startup’s Products and Services

This is where you should describe your offering in detail to the reader. Besides mentioning the features and characteristics of your products and services, state the various benefits to consumers — a simple statement that describes why would a consumer select your service or product.

When talking about your offering and value proposition, it might be a good idea to capture its main features and benefits in a simple table such as the one shown below.

It is a good idea to mention something about your prices at this stage. Stating your rate card or average order values complements the description of your unique selling proposition and provides a practical or tangible information to the readers, allowing them to better imagine or evaluate your startup’s offering in the market.

Pro Tip: If you want, you can also add some product pictures and specifications. But if you have too many visuals or if the info is too technical (a data sheet for example), then they should be put in the appendix; otherwise, they may end up distracting the reader from your main message.

You must conduct a thorough research on the industry and market you are targeting before penning the business plan. If you are able to run a full-blown ground survey, then great. If this isn’t possible, then make sure you find good market reports offered by trusted sources. Based on this research, describe your industry, the opportunities you want to exploit, and the growth projections in your sector of interest.

This section of the plan basically shows the reader that there is a niche in the current market that your product or service can exploit. There are three main components that should be addressed in your market analysis.  

  • Industry analysis – Gives a brief assessment of the industry environment in which your startup will compete. You can start by talking about global trends and then drill down to local market considerations.
  • Target customers – In this section, identify and describe the various customer groups you will be targeting.
  • Competitive analysis – Here, mention your main competitors and talk about their strengths and weaknesses. You can also close this sub-section by stating your startup’s competitive advantages, a list of points explaining how you are edging the competition through a differentiated offering and positioning.

SWOT Analysis

A SWOT analysis is a tool used to evaluate a startup’s internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as external opportunities and threats. The SWOT analysis section would typically include a detailed evaluation of the startup’s current position and potential future growth prospects as follows:

  • Strengths: This section would identify the internal strengths of the startup, such as a unique product or service, a strong management team, or a proprietary technology.
  • Weaknesses: This section would identify the internal weaknesses of the startup, such as a lack of experience, limited financial resources, or a small market share.
  • Opportunities: This section would identify external opportunities for the startup, such as a growing market, new technologies, or changes in government regulations.
  • Threats: This section would identify external threats to the startup, such as increased competition, economic downturns, or changes in consumer preferences.

Your Startup’s Operating Plan

An operating plan explains how your startup’s various teams and members interact with each other and with the various stakeholders of the value chain, to fulfill the mission and reach your business goals. In other words, it describes who does what, and explains how the various tasks should be executed within a defined timetable.

Make sure your startup operating plan is consistently answering the following questions:

  • What are the tasks that must be completed on a daily basis?
  • Who are the owners or people responsible for these tasks?
  • What are the key deadlines for completing these tasks?

Many startups use flowcharts and other visual representations to simplify their operating plan and make it more intelligible.

Your Startup’s Marketing Plan

What’s your startup’s promotional strategy? This is what you should be talking about in detail in this section. Start by listing the challenges that you foresee coming your way and then explain how you plan to overcome them, from a sales and marketing perspective.

To make the plan more visually appealing and to help the reader grasp your strategy, we recommend presenting the challenges and their solutions in a bulleted list or tabled form. Also, don’t forget to justify each of these choices:

Location – Is the location close to your target audience? Will it help you get more sales or save money? Or is your business purely online relying on a website or mobile app?

Branding and awareness – What channels will you activate to reach your prospects and generate brand awareness? Usually, TV, radio, outdoor, display ads and social media are effective means to reach this goal.

Customer acquisition – Are you going to use direct prospecting, paid search, SEO, or other types of ads and offers to acquire leads and generate orders? Or will you use a combination of these?

Lastly, mention the budget allocated for the marketing plan and break it down by channel. If you are hiring a marketing agency or external consultant, factor in this cost into your total budget as well.

Your Startup’s Key People & Hiring Plan

Because you are just embarking on your business journey, your startup is not likely to have many professionals on board. In addition to the founder or founding partners, describe the most important management and operation roles in the company, in addition to providing a brief biographical sketch of each of key person. The main purpose of this section is to convince the reader that your team has both the qualifications and skills to implement everything outlined in your business plan.

Additionally, and to have a better picture of your startup’s hiring plan, it is a good idea to draw a table listing the initial employees and their respective salaries in this section.

Pro tip: You should include educational credentials, key accomplishments, and relevant experience in the biographical sketches of your key team members.

Startup’s Financial Plan

In this section, you must describe the financial aspects, the cost structure and the revenue model of your startup. The financial plan helps you:

  • Quantify the amount of money you need to launch the business
  • Understand how you will spend this money
  • Figure out how long it will take for the business to become profitable

It’s important that you give the reader a detailed peek into your business’s projected finances. Therefore, include detailed financial information. However, instead of just listing the numbers plainly, use charts, graphs and tables to make it easier for the reader to grasp them.

Here’s what should be included in this section:

Startup Income Statement

An income statement, also known as a profit and loss statement or P&L, is a financial document that shows a company’s revenues, expenses, and profits over a specific period of time. In the context of a startup business plan, the income statement section would typically include projected revenue, projected costs and expenses, and projected profits for the startup over a period of time (such as the next three to five years). This section would also typically include information on key assumptions and drivers of revenue and costs, such as pricing strategies and sales goals. Additionally, it may also included a breakdown of the costs, like fixed and variable costs.

Startup Cash Flow Statement

A cash flow statement is a financial document that shows your startup’s cash inflows and outflows over a specific period of time. The cash flow statement section would typically include projected cash inflows (such as revenue from sales) and projected cash outflows (such as expenses for operations and capital expenditures) for the startup over a specific period of time (such as the next three to five years).

The cash flow statement section of a startup business plan would typically include the following elements:

  • Operating Activities: This section would show the cash inflows and outflows from the startup’s normal day-to-day operations, such as revenue from sales, payments to suppliers, and employee salaries.
  • Investing Activities: This section would show the cash inflows and outflows from any investments the startup makes in property, plant, and equipment or other long-term assets.
  • Financing Activities: This section would show the cash inflows and outflows from any financing activities, such as issuing shares of stock, borrowing money, or repaying loans.
  • Net Cash Flow: This section would show the overall cash balance of the startup by adding or subtracting the cash inflows and outflows from the operating, investing, and financing activities.
  • Projected Cash Balance: This section would show the startup’s projected cash balance at the end of each month or quarter over the period of the business plan.

Startup Balance Sheet

A balance sheet is a financial document that shows a company’s assets, liabilities, and equity at a specific point in time. In the context of a startup business plan, the balance sheet section would typically include projected balance sheet items for the startup at the end of each month or quarter over the period of the business plan.

The balance sheet section of a startup business plan would typically include the following elements:

  • Assets: This section would show the things that the startup owns, such as cash, accounts receivable, inventory, property, plant and equipment, and any investments.
  • Liabilities: This section would show the debts and obligations that the startup owes, such as accounts payable, loans, and other types of debt.
  • Equity: This section would show the residual interest in the assets of the company after deducting liabilities, which can include common stock, retained earnings, and any additional paid-in capital.
  • Working Capital: This section would show the difference between current assets and current liabilities.
  • Debt to Equity Ratio: This section would show the proportion of debt to equity in the company, which is a financial metric used to measure a company’s leverage.
  • Current Ratio: This section would show the ability of the startup to meet its short-term obligations by comparing current assets to current liabilities.

The above financial statements are usually drawn from a detailed financial model in Excel. When developing your startup financial plan in Excel, you need to build a cost model, a revenue model and then generate a P&L statement, cash flow statement and balance sheet.

Funding Requirement & Capital Raise

  • Funding Requirements: This section provides an estimate of the total amount of funding that the startup requires to achieve its goals, and the timeline for when the funding is needed.
  • Sources of Funding: This section would discuss the different types of funding that the startup plans to raise, such as venture capital, angel investment, crowdfunding, and debt financing. It would also provide information on the startup’s existing investors and any strategic partners or joint venture partners.
  • Uses of Funds: This section gives a detailed breakdown of how the startup plans to use the funds raised, such as for research and development, marketing and sales, hiring new employees, and purchasing equipment.

Exit Strategy

The exit strategy section of a startup business plan would include the following elements:

  • Overview of Exit Strategies: This section would provide an overview of the different types of exit strategies available to the startup, such as an IPO, a merger or acquisition, or a sale to a strategic buyer. It would also discuss the pros and cons of each option and the potential challenges that the startup may face in executing the chosen strategy.
  • Timeline: This section would provide a rough timeline for when the startup expects to exit the business, and the key milestones that need to be achieved in order to achieve the exit.
  • Preparation: This section would discuss the steps that the startup is taking to prepare for the chosen exit strategy, such as building a strong management team, improving financial performance, and developing a strong customer base.
  • Potential Buyers: This section would identify potential buyers for the startup and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each option.
  • Valuation: This section would provide an estimate of the startup’s valuation, based on its projected financial performance, and discuss how the valuation would be affected by different exit strategies.
  • Risks: This section would discuss the potential risks associated with the chosen exit strategy and the steps that the startup is taking to mitigate those risks.

Finally, summarize again the key points about your startup in the Conclusion section. This, however, can vary depending on your target audience. For example, if you are asking a financial institution for funds, you must focus on the financial viability of your business and the reasons why they should give you the capital you are seeking. If you are trying to convince an investor to join your startup, focus on the attractiveness of the business opportunity and how he or she will be able to gain a strong return on his investment in the near future.

A business case takes a closer look at a specific problem and how you can solve it. Think of a business case as the reason you create a project you’re going to manage in the first place.  The article provides a step-by-step guide on how to write a successful business case, including a checklist for identifying problems, researching solutions, and presenting to stakeholders. What is a business case? A business case is a project you’ll assemble for identifying, addressing, and solving a specific business problem.  The key to a business case is the change it creates in your business. Developing a business case starts with identifying a problem that needs a permanent solution. Without that lasting change, a business case is only an observation about what’s going wrong. A complete business case addresses how a company can alter its strategy to fix that problem. Front-to-back, a business case is a complete story. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end. It typically looks like this: Beginning: Someone identifies a problem within the business and presents the business case to the key decision-makers. Middle: With the project go-ahead, the company launches an internal team to address the business case and deliver results. End: The team delivers a presentation on the changes made and their long-term effects. In short, a business case is the story of a problem that needs solving.   Examples of business cases The problem for many companies is that they can turn a blind eye to challenges that are right in front of their faces. This is even the case when the company has a compelling product to sell. Consider the example of Febreze. In the mid-1990s, a researcher at Procter & Gamble was working with hydroxypropyl beta-cyclodextrin. His wife noticed that his clothes no longer smelled like cigarettes, which was a frequent complaint. P&G had something of a miracle product on its hands. However, their approach was wrong. They initially marketed Febreze as a way to eliminate embarrassing smells. Predictably, the product flopped.  But P&G stuck at it. They had a potential business case on their hands: a highly marketable product proved difficult to market. What was going wrong? Working on the business case from beginning to end provided the answer. After some focus group testing, P&G found out that few consumers recognized the nasty odors they were used to. Instead, they learned to use a different business case for Febreze: it was a cleaning product now, a way to make the house smell nice when the floors are vacuumed and the counters are wiped clean. They gave it its own pleasant smell and fashioned it into a cleaning product. And because it worked so well, so did the campaign.  That’s an example of a business case overall. But let’s get specific: developing a business case is easier when you have a template to look at. Let’s build an example using a made-up company, ABC Widgets, and a hypothetical business case. Let’s call our business case example “Operation Super Widgets”: Business Case: ABC Widgets Section 1: Summary Briefly describe the problem and the opportunities.  ABC Widgets’ latest widget, the Super Widget, is suffering from supply issues, requiring higher shipping costs to procure the necessary resources, and eating into profits. We need to switch to a new supplier to restore the viability of the Super Widget. Section 2: Project Scope This section should include the following: Financial appraisal of the situation. Super Widgets are now 20% more expensive to produce than in the year prior, resulting in -1% profits with each Super Widget sold. Business objectives. To get revenues back up, we need to restore profit margins on Cost Per Unit Sold for every Super Widget back to 2020 levels. Benefits/limitations. Restoring Cost Per Unit Sold will restore 5% of sagging revenues. However, we are limited to three choices for new Super Widget suppliers. Scope and impact. We will need to involve supply chain managers and Super Widget project management teams, which may temporarily reduce the number of widgets we’re able to produce, potentially resulting in $25,000 in lost revenue. Plan. Project Management Teams A and B will take the next two weeks to get quotes from suppliers and select one while integrating an immediate plan to bring in new Super Widget parts for manufacturing within four weeks. Organization. Team Member Sarah will take the lead on Operation Super Widget Profit. Both teams will report to Sarah. This is a bare-bones example of what a business case might look like, but it does hit on the key points: what’s the problem, how can you fix it, what’s the plan to fix it, and what will happen if you succeed? How do you write and develop a business case? When writing your own business case, the above example is a good guide to follow as you get started with the basics.  But, once you’re more familiar with the nuts and bolts, it’s also worth being prepared for some potential roadblocks you could face along the way.  Challenges of writing a good business case Why don’t more companies create a business case? It might come down to a lack of good communication. Many people don’t even know how to write a business case, let alone present one. “The idea may be great, but if it’s not communicated well, it won’t get any traction,” said Nancy Duarte, communication and author who wrote The HBR Guide to Persuasive Presentations. The key challenge, notes Duarte, is taking abstract business concepts (like lagging numbers) and turning them into an immediately recognizable problem. After all, if a company already had perfect awareness that it was making a mistake, it likely would find a way to stop the error in its tracks.  A business case is challenging because it usually means you’ll have to persuade someone that change is needed. And change can be difficult. In a thriving business, it’s especially problematic because it’s easy to point to the bottom line and say that whatever the company is doing is already working. How do you present a business case? The tips and examples above give you some nice remedies for creating a business case without the typical problems. But you’ll still want to present a business case with the straightforward proposals and numbers you’d associate with any new project.  Essentially, it all comes down to how well your business case can persuade the decision-makers. That’s why you shouldn’t just build a case off of raw numbers. The bottom line might be a compelling argument, but it’s not always what “clicks.”  If you’re presenting a business case, you’re a salesperson. And not every sale is a matter of precise logic. It’s also about emotion—the story of why something’s gone wrong and what needs doing if you’re going to overcome it.  The art of a good business case is the art of persuasion. Keep these specific points in mind as you craft one of your own: Point to an example of a bad business case and liken it to the present case. No one likes the idea of watching themselves walk into a mistake. Presenting an example of a business that made the same mistake your company is making and then translating it into the present moment is a compelling way to craft a business case that makes ears perk up. Build a narrative. Nancy Duarte pointed out that in one business case, a client convinced a CEO to follow through with a project by using simple illustrations. It’s not that the idea of adding illustrations to the business case was so great. It’s that the illustrations were able to tell a compelling story about why the case needed to go through. Distill the idea into an elevator pitch. Try this exercise: get your business case down to one sentence. If you can’t explain it any more simply than that, your business case might not be as memorable as it needs to be to sway decision-makers. Use analogies to drive the point home. Let’s say you discovered a problem in a growing business. Overall, revenues are good — but you’ve noticed an associated cost that has the potential to explode in the future and tank the business. But it’s not compelling to use dollars and cents when the business is doing so well. Instead, consider introducing the business case with a simple analogy: “Without repair, every leaky boat eventually sinks.” You now have their attention. Use the numbers to drive the point home, but not to make the point. If you’re presenting a business case to decision-makers, remember that it’s not only the logic of your argument that will convince people — it’s how persuasive you can be. Business case checklist Before you can check “learn how to write a business case” off your list, you have to know the essentials. Make sure you include the following elements in your business case checklist (and, of course, your business case itself): Reasons. This should be the most compelling part of your business case. You can tell a story here. And the most compelling stories start with a loss or a complication of some sort. What is the threat to the business that needs remedy? What are the reasons for moving forward? Potential courses of action. It’s not a complete story until we know the next chapter. A business case isn’t just about the problem — it’s about rectifying a problem through the solution. Recommend a few specific courses of action to help spur discussion about what to do next. Risks and benefits. Not every solution is going to be perfectly clean. There are going to be solutions with downsides. There are going to be costs along with the benefits. Make sure to include each of these to give a clear and complete picture. This is the time to manage expectations — but also the time to inspire action. Cost. What’s it going to cost to complete the project? The people making the decisions need to know the bottom line figure to assess which business cases to prioritize. Timeline. A good project isn’t only measured in dollars but in days, weeks, and months. What is the expected timeline for the business case? How quickly can the problem meet its solution?  With every business case, specificity is key. A vague timeline won’t help — a timeline with specific weekly milestones looks more achievable. To make your business case more compelling, always look for the specific details that tie your story together. You’ve had a great idea for a startup or new business. Now you need to make sure it all makes sense and create a document that shows how and why your business will succeed.

Every company is unique and this will be reflected in its business plan. The steps below can be tailored to your requirements but should ensure the key elements are all included.

Step 1. Set out your stall

You may be clear about what will make your new business great, but you need to be able to communicate that to investors, customers and other stakeholders. An effective business plan will often start with a clear statement about what the business will do, and what product or service it will sell.

Step 2.  Set clear goals

Do you want to takeover the world or just a small corner of it? Is creativity, social impact or innovation more important than maximum profit? Decide on the business, financial and even personal goals you want to achieve in the short and medium term.

Step 3. Explain your product

Describe what your product or service will be, and what makes it unique or different. What are its limitations or downsides? How will you make, develop or source it?

Step 4. Introduce your customer and market

Who is your target customer and how big is your potential market? The better you understand the customer, the more likely you will create something they will buy. Market research is critical. Consider how you could test the market and assess demand with a Minimal Viable Product.

Step 5. Explain your sales and marketing approach

How will you make potential customers aware of your product or service? Marketing and advertising costs are often underestimated, especially in a crowded market with a lot of competition for customers. Will you have time to do the marketing yourself or will you need to hire staff or outsource tasks?

Step 6. Consider variable costs

These are the costs associated with the product or service itself, including manufacture, storage and delivery. For a digital business this could include development and testing.

Step 7. Estimate fixed costs

There will also be fixed costs that you will need to pay no matter how much you sell. These could include salaries and wages, National Insurance, tax, office costs, accountant’s fees, bad debts, interest payments and rates.

Step 8. Work out your pricing

Take the cost of the product or service away from the sales price and you have your gross profit. Subtract your overhead costs for the relevant time period and you’ll start to have an idea of how much you’ll need to sell to make a profit. There are various pricing models and you may need to experiment to find the right one for your business.

Step 9. Evaluate the competition

Identify other businesses that could compete for customers. Make a list of factors related to their product or service – everything from cost and service level to features and reputation. Assess your idea against the competition to spot risks and opportunities.

Step 10. Crunch the numbers

Financial calculations and forecasts are at the heart of a business plan. They could include capital requirements, profit and loss forecasts, cashflow forecasts, required assets and funding requirements. How much startup capital do you need and what runway will that give you before more investment or revenue is required?

Step 11. Decide on a legal structure and business organisation

Will you be a sole trader, limited company or set up a business partnership, perhaps with a co-founder? Do you need staff and will they be offered any equity?  What access to advice and expertise do you have – and what will you need to pay for?

Step 12. Assess the risks

With so much disruption and uncertainty it has never been more important to assess the risks your business may face. Be honest about gaps in the founders’ knowledge or experience and look to fill them. Work out contingency plans and stress-test your assumptions.

Step 13. Iterate your approach

A business plan should be an evolving document that reflects what you are learning and the data and insight that is being collected. The sections may need to be adapted or added to, depending on the nature of the business, its sales model and type of funding.

As a startup, you will need a business plan. For example, you will need to show your plan to a bank if you are seeking a loan. You also need to show the plan to any investor. Business plans are helpful because they force you to step back and analyze your business critically. You should consider your target market, the products or services you will offer, and your projected finances. Writing a business plan isn’t difficult, though it will require considerable research and planning.

Explaining Your Marketing Plan

Step 1 Describe your mission and objectives.

  • Your mission. What is your driving goal every day? Don’t simply write, “Make money.” Identify how you will make money. For example, you can write: “Our mission is to offer residents of the Lakeview neighborhood the best day spa experience in the Near North Side of Chicago. We are committed to providing value and quality in a fun atmosphere that is never predictable.”
  • Your goals. For example, a day spay might have the following goal: “To attract a minimum of 35 customers each day in the first year of operations.” Make your goals as concrete as possible.
  • Description of the industry. Explain whether the industry is growing or poised for growth in the short and long term.
  • The factors that will drive your success. How will you set yourself apart? For example, “You All Day will separate itself from the pack based on the owner’s deep experience running a day spa in Seattle for ten years. This experience includes familiarity with successful marketing techniques and trends analysis.”
  • Your legal form. Are you a sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company (LLC), or corporation? Also explain why you selected this form.

Don’t skimp on how much energy and time you put into your mission. Step 2 Discuss your industry.

  • You can search for industry information in other places. For example, talk to people in your industry at trade shows. Also search online. Many industries have trade associations, which have websites with information.
  • For example, when analyzing the day spa industry, you might want to talk about how it is growing because more upper-income men in urban areas are visiting. (If that’s true).
  • By analyzing the industry, you gain insight as to your likely target market and how you can reach them.

Step 3 Identify your target market.

  • Age. What is the average age of your likely customer? If you don’t know, then visit similar businesses and note the ages of the clientele.
  • Gender. Will men or women—or both—primarily use your products or services?
  • Location. Generally, your market will be located near your business. However, if you have a web-based business, your target audience could have no geographic boundaries.
  • Income level.
  • Occupation. For example, a day spa might target stressed-out white collar professionals.
  • Education level. There is often a link between education, income, and occupation—though not always. For example, a discount bookstore might target an educated audience that nevertheless has a lower income.

Step 4 Scope out your competition.

  • To find competitors, look in the phone book and do a general Google search. Make sure to read their website and stop into the business.
  • If you’re opening a restaurant, you’ll want to see a sample menu, as well as the hours of operation.
  • Also identify indirect competitors. For example, a day spa is competing with more than other spas. You also compete with any business that offers relaxation, such as massage parlors or meditation centers.
  • Name of your competitor.
  • What you offer that they don’t. Think about products and services, but also location, ease of ordering, etc. What will make the consumer experience different at your business?
  • What they offer that you don’t. Identify why you don’t offer their products or services. For example, they may be serving multiple niches while you are focused on only one. Alternately, they may have a favorable location.

Step 6 Describe your products and services.

  • Whether you will sell pizza by the slice, as whole pies, or both
  • How big your pizzas will be
  • What toppings your customers can offer
  • If you will have take-out and delivery options
  • What other food items will be sold

Step 7 Devise your marketing...

  • What type of advertising or promotion will you use? How often will you use paid promotion?
  • What other promotion other than paid advertising will you use? For example, you might use social media, professional networks, etc.
  • Will you create a logo and use it on cards, letterhead, websites, etc.?
  • How large will your promotional budget be?

Discussing Your Business Organization

Step 1 Explain your daily operations.

  • State how much you expect to pay each employee in your first three years of business.
  • Also name your professional support, such as your business lawyer, accountant, and insurance agent. Professionals are independent contractors you use but don’t employ. Calculate how much you expect to spend on each professional.

Step 2 Identify management.

  • You might write: “Lisa Jones is the sole proprietor of You All Day and will run day-to-day operations. As a certified massage therapist, she ran the Relax! chain of day spas in the Greater Seattle area for ten years. A former accountant, Lisa has an MS in accounting from the University of New Hampshire and worked as a CPA briefly before going into the spa business.”
  • If you are asking for a loan, then include resumes for each owner. You can put them in the appendix at the end of the document.

Step 3 Provide personal financial statements.

  • You should create professional-looking financial statements using a spreadsheet.
  • You’ll have to gather quite a bit of information to make the financial statement. For example, you will need information on your assets, investments, and personal debts.
  • You might also want to get a free copy of your credit report and review it as you draft your business plan.

Analyzing Business Finances

Step 1 Explain your start-up costs.

  • Also identify the source of the startup capital. For example, if your startup has three initial owners, state how much each is contributing to the business and their ownership percentage.
  • If you need financing, state how much. Include the terms of any proposed loan.

Step 2 Forecast profits for the first year.

  • You’ll need to make some assumptions in order to come up with a forecast of sales. You should explain these assumptions in your business plan.
  • For example, you can write, “We assume continued interest in day spas in the Chicago area.”
  • Another assumption is the overall health of the economy. “Although the Chicagoland economy has grown more slowly than other regions of the country, we assume that the Chicago economy will grow on par with other large metropolitan areas in the coming decade.”
  • You can also include a four-year projection, though this is optional.

Step 3 Identify expected cash...

  • Also talk about how you will build up your cash reserves. For example: “In addition to normal cash flow, we will focus on obtaining sufficient cash reserves for emergencies. These reserves include a line of credit with a bank, which we can use when business is slow. We will also invest excess cash in certificates of deposits at our bank.”

Step 4 Provide a break-even analysis.

  • Fixed costs: these don’t vary depending on your sales volume. For example, your rent, employee salaries, and insurance are fixed costs.
  • Variable costs: these fluctuate depending on your sales and include shipping, inventory, and manufacturing costs.

Finishing Your Business Plan

Step 1 Format your document.

  • Add a cover page to your document. You can title it “[Company Name]’s Business Plan” or “Business Plan for [Your Name].” If you have a logo, include that too.

Step 2 Draft your executive summary.

  • For example, you can write, “You All Day is a start-up dedicated to providing men and women in Chicago a high-quality day spa experience at an affordable price. We specialize in pedicures, manicures, massage, and herbal aromatherapy. The Near North Side of Chicago has grown substantially over the past 20 years, with young, educated millennials settling in to start families. This area is currently under served, and we hope You All Day can meet the demand of the local market.”

Step 3 Assemble the pieces.

  • Executive Summary

Step 4 Add attachments in the appendix.

  • Review for typos and other errors. An accountant should check your numbers to make sure they are accurate.
  • Analyze the overall presentation. Is the information crammed in so that the document is tiring to read? If so, spread out the information so that there is a lot of white space on each page.

A critical step in how to start a company is performing due diligence. Start with primary research by exploring the market. Connect with your potential market and perform interviews. Use social media or footwork to conduct surveys about consumer interest. Observe how the lack of your product impacts your market or how consumers use similar products. Utilize focus groups and contract research services, if applicable.

Move on to secondary research by collecting and analyzing existing data. Find and examine any competitors, including variations on your theme. Note their price point, marketing scheme, delivery methods, storefronts, and locations in your market area. Review all their iterations, versions, color options, size choices, flavors, and other options that might reflect their market research. Read their customer and peer reviews, where applicable. 

Run a thorough SWOT analysis by exploring your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Use your primary and secondary research to support your results. This data can help you focus your idea and make the necessary adjustments before settling on a concept. 

Complete a financial viability analysis to determine if you can produce the product in a way that allows for continuity and reasonable profit. Consider supply chain issues (shipping, flights, trains, etc.), resource trends (lumber, steel, gold), and common staffing issues. Many people assume it’s easy to find employees, but the reality can be different in many markets.

Perform a minimum viable product (MVP) test. This means you create a prototype or simplified version of your product and launch it to a select group of potential clients. Observe whether they find it valuable, how they use it, and whether or not it fills the market gap. 

3. Build Your Business Plan 

Writing a business plan is often the most overwhelming of the steps to starting a business. It is a key document used to attain financing, stakeholders, and partners. Even if you don’t want partners or need a loan, your business plan acts as a written foundation. 

If you were thorough during steps 1 and 2, creating a business plan is easier than you think. In many cases, it’s as simple as filling in the blanks with the data you’ve already collected. Follow this outline for the key components of a business plan:  

  • Executive Summary: This is a short overview of the main aspects of your business. It’s meant to capture attention and interest in your project. 
  • Company Description: Use this section to describe your company. Give an overview of your vision and answer the five W’s—what, where, when, why, and how. You’ll have a chance to go into detail later. Keep it concise. 
  • Market Analysis: In this section, you’ll distill your market research into key points. Demonstrate that you’ve completed a thorough market analysis without going into too much detail about your process. 
  • Management and Organization: Outline your organization structure and business type. Include how and who will make decisions and an organizational chart if it’s relevant.
  • Products and Services: List your products and or services in detail, including descriptions and pricing.
  • Customer Segmentation: Divide your customer base into segments with shared characteristics or preferences.
  • Marketing Plan: Include your marketing plan in detail. How to create a marketing plan is discussed later in this article. 
  • Logistics and Operations Plan: Add a section that discusses how you’ll achieve the end product.
  • Financial Plan: Include a detailed financial plan. It’s likely to be the most scrutinized section if you’re applying for funding or seeking partners.
  • Appendix: Include any other detailed information on the aspects you outlined earlier in the business plan, particularly about your logistics and market research. 

4. Select Your Business Structure

Sole proprietorships don’t require legal consultation to establish, they’re easy to dismantle, have fewer upfront fees, and reporting taxes is as simple as completing a personal tax return. You also don’t need to share the profits.

The major drawback to a sole proprietorship is personal liability. Your business is not registered as a separate, legal entity, so you have no protection against lawsuits and tax implications. 

Partnerships 3 IRS. “ Partnerships ” Accessed on March 20, 2024. are a business structure type that’s suitable if you choose to work with one or more other people. Partnerships include general, limited, or limited liability partnership (LLP) structures. In a general partnership, all parties share the profits, debts, and liabilities. A limited partnership combines both structures in that one person takes on the liability while the other remains a silent partner. An LLP is common among doctors and lawyers who share a practice. Personal assets are siloed against liability in an LLP. 

In a partnership, both parties can pool labor and resources. They can act as sounding boards for each other, helping to bring new ideas to life. However, with a partnership comes the opportunity for disagreement or mismanagement, additional debts or liabilities, and increased difficulty in selling or dissolving the business.   

A corporation is a legal entity of its own. 4 IRS. “ Incorporating ” Accessed on March 20, 2024 It separates the individual business owner, shareholders, and board members from any legal liability and business assets . Starting a corporation involves a significant amount of paperwork and ongoing annual filings. 

It’s easier for an incorporated business to raise capital, sell shares, and divest ownership. While corporations can enjoy decreased tax rates, you are essentially taxed twice, first as a corporate entity on profits, then personally on your dividend income and capital gains. 

Small businesses that start as sole proprietorships can always scale up to a partnership, corporation, or limited liability entity.

5. Register Your Business and Get Licenses

This step in starting a small business has a lot of variation. As a sole proprietor, you don’t need to register a business name if you do business under your own name. You also don’t need an employer identification number (EIN) if you don’t have employees, but it helps when it comes time to open a business bank account and pay taxes. You will need to register your business and apply for a license or permit depending on your state and the nature of your business. To stand out as a business entity, it’s important to choose the right business name. Research other businesses with similar names to see if your name infringes on their registered identity. The US Small Business Administration (SBA) can help you determine if you need to register your name with the local, state, and federal government. 

6. Set Up a Bank Account for Your Business

Setting up a business bank account 7 SBA. “ Open a business bank account ” Accessed on March 20, 2024 can make managing your business finances much simpler. A business bank account can also help you remain legally compliant. It’s easier to attain a business credit card and merchant services with a business checking or savings account. You receive limited personal liability protection and better purchasing power. 

Shop around for a bank with lower fees, introductory offers, and good benefits. When you’ve made your choice, you’ll need your social security number (SSN) or employer identification number (EIN), business license, ownership agreement, and proof of business address. If you are incorporated, you’ll need your articles of incorporation and proof of address for the named director.

7. Secure Funding for Your Venture 

Acquiring funding is one of the most important steps in how to start a small business. This financial decision can affect your business structure and the operation of your business. Draw on the financial section of your business plan to determine how much funding you’ll need. 

Self-funding through personal investments, mortgages, and family or personal loans can ensure you remain in control of the business. Speak to your mortgage advisor and financial planner about all the risks associated with leveraging your real estate assets or tapping into your retirement investments to fund a business venture. You take on all the risks with self-funding.

Venture capital from investors offers upfront financing for a share in the business and participation in the business decisions. It’s not a loan but an exchange for equity. It can also change your business structure.

Crowdfunding is another option that requires low risk for the reward. Crowdfunders donate or give money to your business in return for an acknowledgment rather than a share of your company.

A small business loan from a bank or professional lender is the perfect opportunity to pull out the business plan you worked so hard on. Be prepared to shop around for the best rates and terms for your loan. You’ll likely use the same bank or credit union for your business bank account and credit card.

8. Obtain a Business Credit Card 

A business credit card helps establish lines of credit with your suppliers and for large purchases required for product development. Getting a business credit card is difficult without an adequate credit history. 

Some banks will put you on a probation period with a business-secured card that acts like a credit card but needs to carry a balance to make purchases. As you regularly make work-related purchases and payments to the card, the bank reports your history to various credit bureaus. It’s a good way to build credit history for your business when you are just starting out.

Credit card companies require the same information the bank asks for when you open your business account. And, just like with your bank and loan, you’ll want to shop around for a good rate, terms, and benefits.

9. Prepare for Tax Obligations

Small business owners operating general partnerships or sole proprietorships have the same tax responsibilities as regular taxpayers. You are responsible for filing your tax returns and paying your taxes owed on time—failure to do so results in penalties.

A corporation or LLC business structure will have additional obligations, including filing annual reports. However, corporations can file in calendar years or fiscal years. 

Filing your taxes as a small business owner can be easy with the right support. You’ll want to get as much for each deduction as possible. Tracking your expenses, billable hours, and invoices is easier with expense-tracking software .

Not all business owner’s policies cover everything. Your business location can also influence your coverage and rates. Carefully read your proposed policy and discuss the details with your provider before purchasing.

Investing in business tools can streamline your small business administration and processes, leaving you more time to focus on aspects of your life you can’t automate, like self-care.

13. Make Your Business Scalable

Of course you’ll need some life experience of your own. You’ll also need to have your own coaching program built out that you can walk clients through. This doesn’t need to be tried-and-tested, but it would be great if you could get feedback on it from someone in your target audience before you use it in practice. 

As you’ll work closely with many of your clients, it is important to have strong interpersonal skills such as being good at making connections with strangers, high emotional intelligence (EI), and the ability to be confident on camera (if you plan to host your coaching sessions over video conferencing). And don’t forget about great business management skills! Most of your time will involve managing budget, scheduling meetings or content, and reporting on business successes. 

At your core, you will need to be passionate about what you’re teaching. As a life coach, your main responsibility is to inspire clients to lead a better, more fulfilling life. You can’t do this if you’re not passionate about the conversation or if you don’t feel motivated to support other people on their own journeys.

Fortunately, becoming a life coach isn’t cost prohibitive for most people. Repeat, stable business is good business! Having regularly recurring meetings and working with your client on their life goals can bring in steady income that is an important part of growth. As a best practice, don’t try to convert all of your existing clients to higher paying options at the same time. You’ll appreciate having some stability in your business. 

Finding opportunities for upselling

If a client is ready to take their services to the next level, such as going from a group coaching session to a one-on-one training session, make sure you have a plan to nurture them through this upsell process. You can also offer upsell opportunities by selling content like e-books, research papers, workbooks, or other tools that they need to reach their goals. 

Encourage customer referrals

The Net Promoter Score (NPS) is a measure of success for many businesses as the higher this number is, the more likely your customers are to scream your name from the rooftop when it comes to referring new business your way. It’s a good idea to run your NPS surveys with clients every few months. You can also consider offering clients incentives for referrals, such as 50% their next session. This is a fantastic approach to use if you have a customer who may not be able to spend more money with you or may not use your services for a long time but still had a positive experience. 

Tips to get your first client

  • Build network connections . Building trust with your clients is necessary for your first interactions to go well, and what better way to earn trust than by having a connection to someone in your network! Talk with your LinkedIn connections, meet people at events, or engage with community activities.
  • Engage with your target audience where they are . Spend time researching where your target audience finds information and post your promotional activities solely on those channels. Don’t spend time experimenting with new channels with less engagement from your target audience until you have a strong cash flow and book of business. 
  • Offer a free trial . This isn’t a good long-term solution for monetizing your skills, but it is a good way to give new clients a risk-free way to try working with you. For example, offer your first five clients to have their first session with you for free. 
  • Focus on establishing industry reputation . Continue developing thought leadership content like blogs or whitepapers, or be a guest on an industry podcast . This helps you generate leads and shows off your knowledge.
  • Build a strong online presence . When potential clients search for you, they’ll want to see that you have an online presence to show credibility, which may include a website, LinkedIn profile, contributions to other websites, or other relevant social channels. Over time, reviews & testimonials will help here too. 

How to scale a coaching business

  • Continuously experiment. Even if you have experience running other businesses, the strategies that made that business successful might not be the same ones that make this one grow. A/B testing is a popular approach to experimentation that allows you to test multiple versions of something at the same time then eventually convert to just using the top performer after the testing period ends.
  • Collect feedback. Ask your clients about their experience. Reflect on things like how they found out about your business, what they wish they knew early on, and areas that they’d like to see you improve or expand.
