Hot summer days can be tiresome and exhausting due to the scorching heat and the dehydration it causes but it's also during this time that students amd their families get to enjoy their summer vacations without having to worry about school work or bed time. When summer first arrives, mornings are pleasant and more refreshing, but as the day goes on, the heat of the sun increases until it is felt throughout the entire day. The severity of the weather is also felt by trees and plants, since their leaves appear dull and their flowers fade swiftly. As the day progresses, the temperature rises, making this the most difficult part of the day—especially for those who perform field work. People prefer to stay inside their homes throughout the day, leaving the streets, markets, and other places looking vacant. Both animals and people living outside seek cover under trees and big buildings on a hot day.

Even though summer is the hottest season of the year, it can also be the most interesting and fun since it gives children some time off school and they can go swimming and pursue hobby classes. It is also a time when they can relish some of their favourite foods like ice creams and mangoes, go swimming, eat ice cream and their favourite fruits, etc. People also escape to hill stations for much-needed breaks from the scorching heat of the sun and return only after the weather improves.

Children usually find summers to be pleasant despite the heat as they enjoy their summer vacation from school and get more time to play outside with their friends without having to worry about homework or waking up early. People enjoy swimming, eating summertime fruits, and sipping cold beverages on hot summer days. Children often enjoy a hot summer day with seasonal fruits like mangoes, kiwis, and pineapple. Not only do these foods cool the body, but they also lift up one's mood. Ice cream and cold drinks are also very popular on a hot summer day. As night falls, people come out to enjoy themselves in lush green parks, gardens and shopping centres.

Summer is the hottest season of the year, with longer, warmer days and shorter nights. Many people prefer to stay indoors during the day during summers because of the scorching heat, and like to be active in the early morning or in the late afternoon after the sun has set. People usually use light cotton clothing in hot weather to minimise the heat effect and stay cool. In order to prevent dehydration and sun stroke, we should drink more water and eat more fruits. This is also the time when schools are closed and children can take summer vacations to visit other places such as hill stations and beaches.

Protecting ourselves from extreme heat

Hot weather can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, and, in extreme situations, heat stroke. Globally, hot days are becoming hotter and more frequent, whereas cold days are becoming less frequent. Drought can be made worse by heat, and wildfires can be sparked by hot, dry weather. High daytime temperatures are detrimental to plant growth, and certain crops need cool nights. Extremely hot days can be managed by:-

developing heat-preparedness strategies, which may include actions like opening cooling facilities during times of extreme heat and establishing workplace heat stress regulations

putting up cool, green roofs and cool pavement can also lessen the impact of the urban heat island

planting more trees to create shade and evapotranspiration to cool the air

Keep your living area cool. When it is dark and the temperature outside has dropped, open the windows that were closed throughout the day.

Eat and drink cold things, stay away from hot and alcoholic beverages, and take a chilly shower or splash cool water on your skin or clothing.

Even if you don't feel thirsty, make sure to drink lots of water.

During this season, many people often face sweating and dehydration as well and that is when surprise rains are sometimes a good relief from a hot summer day.

How i spent a Hot Summer Day?

I remember spending one such hot summer day with my family during summer holidays. The sun was at its highest point and the heat was almost unbearable. My family and I decided to make a plan to escape the scorching heat and uplift everyone’s mood—we made plans to go swimming late in the evening and then go for a movie after dinner. The thought of cold water and an air-conditioned theatre excited everyone. We reached the community pool around 5pm and everyone dived in after changing into their bathing suits. We got swimming tubes and balls to play around with. We divided ourselves into two teams and played marco polo.

It was amazing to see everyone relax and have a wonderful time. We then went to watch an action movie at the theatre. Everyone purchased cool beverages and popcorn. My cousin and I even felt a bit chilly due to the air conditioning—everyone else had a good laugh over it. Even though the weather was not in our favour, we managed to turn our day around and made it into one of the memorable days that I will always cherish.

A hot day in summer is a very bad experience. The temperature is very high. The sun seems cruel, burning everything on its face. It is scorching and perspiring. Going out to work is much more teasing. Travelling by buses and trains is all the more troublesome. The mornings are somewhat cool but as noon approaches the things to worsen. The trees and plants seem to sulk in the Sun. They keep quite motionless as there is not a whiff of wind. Everything is silent and unmoving. The birds and beasts all gasp for breath. The stray dogs die of thirst. The Sun seems to get hotter and hotter every moment. Everything gets heated up. The walls and floors seem burning. The only source of comfort is the cold water which keeps us going. People consume a lot of water all through the day and night. The fans, coolers, air conditioners and fridges work round the clock. The electricity is consumed at its peak. The big cities suffer from power cuts and people come on the roads, they protest but ultimately they reconcile with the situation. There is a scarcity of all the essential supplies due to heat. The vegetable prices go sky-high. The schools declare holidays as they cannot make proper arrangements for the students. The rich escape the heat of the plains and take refuge in the hill stations. They pay for the expensive stays there.

The condition of poor labourers is pitiable. They have to work on roads and building constructions in the open Sun. The affluent people enjoy their posh houses and cars, offices and farmhouses. It is again the poor who suffer the wrath of nature. The trouble ends only when there is a bounty of nature in the form of a shower of rain. People pray for this bounty of nature, day in and out and ultimately the clock of time turns round and it is the end of summer.

An Extremely Hot Day

In countries like India, the summer season is the most uncomfortable season. Extremely hot weather affects in slowing down of activity. The blowing of the loo causes much discomfort and, sometimes, even leads to death. Frequent breakdown of electricity adds much to the problem. In order to counter the effect of extremely hot days, an air-conditioned atmosphere is provided in offices and business centres. During extremely hot days, the loss of appetite is a common phenomenon. People heave a sigh of relief when, during an extremely hot day, there are clouds or a shower.

A Hot Summer Day

Summer is very hot in India. June is the hottest month of the year. The heat of the sun becomes unbearable. People perspire from head to foot. Cold drinks are in great demand. Baths give little relief. Not only men but even animals and birds feel restless in the intense heat of the sun.

It was the day of 20th June. The sun was extremely hot. I was wet to the bone with sweat. A hot wind was blowing outside. Not a leaf was stirring. The birds were sitting quietly. They were feeling thirsty. Their beaks were wide open. Dogs were sitting in drains of dirty water. They were lolling their tongues. The roads looked deserted.

The afternoon was the hottest part of the day. Nobody liked to go out in the sun. The shopkeepers had pulled down their shutters. They were taking a rest under the fans. A boy or two were carrying umbrellas over their heads. The rickshaw pullers were perspiring while plying rickshaws. Parents were waiting for their children from school. The labourers had left their work. They were sitting in a shady corner.

The people prayed to God for rain. God answered their prayers. Meanwhile, clouds started gathering in the sky. A cool wind began to blow. Soon it began to rain. There was water everywhere. People came out of their houses. Children began playing in rainwater. The birds started chirping. The weather became pleasant. People heaved a sigh of relief. There was a mood of fun and gaiety.

In the hot weather in India, wise people get up before dawn; for when the sun has once risen, good-bye to any hope of coolness until early the next morning. It is still dark when one leaves one’s bed on the top of the house or in the garden (for sleeping inside the house at night is impossible), has a nice cold bath, and dresses. Now for the only pleasant walk in the day! There is just a faint light in the eastern sky, and the stars are beginning to pale. A cool breeze blows, and the birds are waking. The crows caw noisily in the trees, a flock of screaming parrots flies overhead, doves are cooing, and the brain-fevered bird is trying to reach its top note. The grass is cool and dewy, the shadowy trees are rustling their leaves, and the air is full of scent.

The grey light in the east grows rapidly brighter, turns to red and then to gold, and then a burning bright point appears above the horizon. It quickly grows larger and larger and rises higher (how you wish you could stop it!), and then up-leaps the sun and it is the day. At once the heat begins. Walking becomes toilsome and wearisome, and one turns back to the house for one’s morning cup of tea, under the electric fan or the old-fashioned punkah, on the verandah.

It is not long before the servants begin shutting the house up to keep it cool every door and window barred against the heat enemy, that now begins to besiege the fortress. If we can sit inside our fort under the fan, we keep fairly cool. But if we have to go out in the now blazing sun, as most people have to do, then we feel the full force of the heat. In places like Bombay, Calcutta and Madras, the heat is humid, for the air is full of moisture; it is like being in a hothouse or a Turkish bath, and our shirt is wet through with sweat. But in Punjab, the heat is very dry and fierce, like the blast of a furnace.

By noon the sun is the blazing right over-head-a fierce, scorching, pitiless sun. The farmers in the fields take refuge under the shade of the trees and sleep. But noon is not the hottest time. All the afternoon the heat gets more and more intense, until about four o’clock it is at its worst; and the only thing is to lie indoors under the fan and gasp. How welcome is tea when it comes!

At about six o’clock, we can open doors and windows. But it is still very hot outside, even after the sun has set; for the heated earth, like a hot brick, gives out heat for hours. But when darkness comes, it gets a little cooler; so that one is glad at last to get to sleep in the open air with only a sheet over one.

A Man staying in the cool and calm atmosphere of his house can hardly know what heat can do to a person. We sometimes do feel hot in spite of the fan but that heat is bearable. What about the man on the road? Only a person who has had an experience of this can know the difference and appreciate the comfort which we find only by staying within our four walls.

I dread heat and cold equally. But once on an exceptionally hot day, I had to remain out of doors on business. I started at eight in the morning when the heat was somewhat bearable. I thought I would finish whatever I had to do before it got unbearably hot. But alas! I had not taken into account the hurdle that was to come that day before me. Every step threw me behind schedule. At noon, worn out, hot and miserable, I still found myself on the road.

During these hours my clothes got wet with perspiration and dried up so many times that I made quite a clumsy figure. During this period I drank water like a fish.

Now I thought once again to refresh myself with some cold drink. I entered a restaurant. I demanded a cold drink and the bearers there must have taken me for a madman as they watched me consume some four or five glasses of it. You cannot imagine how much at ease I felt inside that air-conditioned restaurant. I almost thought of sitting down there for the rest of the day. But I had to move out to finish my work for the day.

Here on the road, for the first time in the day, I saw a person who was in greater trouble than myself and who looked more uneasy than I. He was a bald-headed middle-aged man. As he went along I saw to my horror that he went with a bundle on his head. I could not be mad but he was surely almost mad with heat. I cannot say whether he actually went mad by the time he reached home. It made me almost nervous when I realised that my condition was not much better. The next thing I did was to take a bus and return home.

That day was a day I spent in hell. The next day I read in the newspaper that a man had died due to heat. Such was the intensity of summer.

Master List for Describing Weather

A lot of writers struggle with describing settings. I’ve written before about how to describe settings and why it matters , but a few people have told me they’d like me to do some of my master lists for writers to help them out!

I have a weird love for creating lists like this, so I’m happy to do it. “How to describe weather” seemed like a good place to start. This way, you won’t get stuck trying to figure out how to describe nice weather, or thinking up ways to describe rain. Hopefully, this will make your writing go faster.

I always include simple as well as more creative ways to describe or write about weather. Sometimes, the simple word is the one you want! I included dryness and humidity in a few of the categories because it felt weird for them to get their own.

As always, this is not a comprehensive list, and I might add to it. My list will probably make you think of other possibilities, too. Bookmark or pin it for future writing reference!

There are different seasons in a year, winter, spring, summer and autumn. But among all these seasons, summer is the most awaited and favorite season for everyone. Summer is a time when everyone wants to enjoy and relax. There are various things to do in the summer season. People love going on vacation during summer. They can do different activities like visiting picnic places, resorts and many other things that they like. The weather is too good for travelling.

The summer season brings so much happiness to everyone. Everyone eagerly waits for summer to come. People get a chance to enjoy the sun and its heat. People can go outside to enjoy the sun. People spend most of their day outside during summer. They want to feel hot sun rays on their face and body, which makes them feel refreshed. The summer season is too good for students as they can enjoy long vacations in summer. They do not have to go to school and can enjoy their vacations. They can take part in different activities that they like to do. Kids love the summer season as it is the time for playing outside. They can go to a swimming pool, park or any other place where they can enjoy playing. There are so many things for children to do during summer. They can also go on a trip with their family and friends.

People can also enjoy their time by sitting outside their homes. And castles make for a perfect summer day at the beach. When going to the pool, one will most likely find a suntan lotion dispenser. From late afternoon thunderstorms to s'mores by the campfire with friends and family, summers are a wonderful time of year filled with many different stereotypical memories that pop into mind as the word is spoken.

There are different seasons in a year, summer, monsoon, autumn, winter, and spring. With each season, we witness certain changes not only in our lives but also on our Earth. Seasons are reminders to us that change is inevitable. India is one of the few countries that experiences all six seasons in a year. They are summer, monsoon, autumn, pre-winter, winter, and spring. However, these seasons vary from region to region due to factors like latitude, longitude, topography, and environmental factors. As per the Hindu calendar, each season is divided into two months throughout the year.

The summer season is one of the main seasons in a tropical country like India. Summer sets in April and continues up to the end of July. Summer is usually associated with hot, dry weather. The days are longer, and the nights are shorter during this season. From late morning to midnight, heat persists during the summer months.

In the Hindu calendar, these months are called Jyeshta and Aashaadha. In India, since the tropic of cancer passes through the northern hemisphere, the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh experience the summer season. The temperature in some places increases up to 50o Celsius.

Disadvantages

The days become so hot and long that people suffer from terrible heat right from the morning till midnight. It becomes difficult for people to commute. Most people are spotted in light dresses, sunglasses, and sandals. On some days, a hot and dusty wind blows at noon and makes life more miserable. People prefer staying indoors. In the northern part of India, this wind is called 'Loo', and it is not safe to get exposed to this. In the daytime, the scorching heat of the sun affects normal life. The difficulties in this season are innumerable. Ponds and pools dry up. The water level in wells also goes down. A water crisis is felt almost everywhere. The absence of enough trees and persistent pollution aggravates the problems in summer. The weak and the old sometimes fall victim to sunstrokes in the hot sun. Birds and stray animals face lots of hardship, as they don't get sufficient water to drink. Many health issues like dysentery, dehydration, and diarrhoea are prevalent in this season. The towns and cities look deserted in the afternoons. Everything comes to a standstill during the day because of the simmering rays of the sun. The nights become pleasant, and most activities are done after the sunset during this season.

Besides the innumerable difficulties people face, it is the most awaited season, especially by the students. They get over with their final exams, and it is vacation time for them as well as their parents. They plan to visit their grandparents or places like hill stations to escape the heat. Some also go to the beaches, as they are very pleasant at night. Children take up many indoor activities. Swimming and other water sports are some favorite outdoor activities in this season, making it somewhat pleasant. Summer break for the students is a good time for learning various new activities. Most students go for summer camps at cooler places.

Various kinds of vegetation thrive around us. Many kinds of fruits and flowers are available in this season. Mango is the most dominant fruit of the summer season. Other fruits like jackfruits, guava, litchis, watermelons, and pineapples are available in plenty in the summer season.

We can see many beautiful animals and creatures thriving in our surroundings since they wake up from their hibernation.

Cold drinks, ice-creams, and watery fruit juices like grapes, cucumber, watermelon, are in high demand in this season. People prefer cold foods like kulfis, chilled juices, etc.

It is an important season for the farmers. They sow seeds for new crops because this climate is favorable for the cultivation of the crops. They sow Zaid crops like pumpkin, cucumber, and bitter gourd, etc.

Important festivals like Buddha Purnima, Rath yatra are celebrated during this season. Some more important festivals like Baisakhi, Ram Navami, Raja Parva, and Hanuman Jayanti are also celebrated.

The summer season, which is full of heat and dust, is a blessing in disguise. A few summers ago, I led summer writing camps for kids called Write Camp. It was a blast helping kids of all ages get their fantastical ideas down on paper. My sister signed up my nephew, even though he was a reluctant third grade writer at the time. She wasn't sure he'd even participate.

I assured her that the no-pressure, fun environment would help him imagine writing in a new way, and that he would finish the summer with a story or two and a new understanding of writing.

I'm happy to report I was right! He and his fellow write campers all finished stories and left feeling more confident in their writing skills.

Sometimes we spend so much time trying to get students to write correctly that we drain all the fun out of it. We forget that the first step to becoming a strong writer is to actually write. Try these summer writing prompts to help you (or a young writer in your life!) have some writing fun.

There was a dance of summer light upon the blacktop that day.

Summer sits upon the hill as a great floral wedding hat.

Come see me in the summer time, when the leaves are dark green and full, opened toward the sunlight and breathing in the hot aromatic air.

In the summertime I could close my eyes and feel that the meadow and floral blooms were as much within me as they were around me, supporting my body upon the warm earth.

Between the paving stones comes blooms so bold and tall, giving of their aroma to the summer-infused breeze. For these seeds of humble size and hue are the ninjas of the botanical world, born to shout loud of their graffiti-petaled beauty.

That hot sidewalk has me dancing along a little faster, but since my destination is assured that's all good. The sun is brilliant in cornflower-blue sky, as if one perfect petal was stretched so wide around all the world. As I go I'm dreaming up new graffiti, new vibrant mosaics to bring this neighbourhood to a higher rhythm, an exuberance we were born for. That's summer. That's the time when music, art and dance flow into one another as inseparable as any true friends should be.

In the late summer wind are the red flags of the poppy petals, a living masterpiece of nature. Though they grow unnoticed by so many, they are more to my eye than a monet or any artwork that brings their likeness in beautiful strokes of softest bristles.

Anya is watching the trees, how they sway in a warming breeze. It is that time when summer begins to blossom into something the body feels as much as the brain, when the emotions catch their thermal updrafts.

Summer comes fast, as music turned up to full volume. The sky blazes blue and the sun is a celebration of yellow, free and bright. The trees rise to the occasion, donning their best verdant hues, and everywhere are the flowers, the scattered rainbow that they are.

The flowers are a new masterpiece each day, changing the frameless scenery, gazing upward at the ever-present sky; they are the warmth of the land that give thanks to the warmth of the summer sun. They are the rainbow that arises from earth and water, yet can be nothing without those golden rays. Each day of these playful months will come in moments, the gift of the present, lived in barefoot dances, wind-tousled hair, laughter and song... the layers of winter left in some forgotten closet.

Summer comes in her own time, drifting in on a spring wind, wakening with the kind of warmth that flows to the core. Through the windows she sends light, spreading rainbows over the Victorian cream walls. Ted has become enchanted by a patch of blue and violet that slowly stretches out to show the gold and blushed orange. Then there comes a sound that has been absent for the cooler months, the steady buzz of young bees, ready to seek blooms just as pretty as they. I wonder how they'll fare when summer rests in a day or two, saving energy for her next encore, perhaps they will too.

Under the summer sun I feel the warmth of those brilliant rays, of light granting us new vibrant colours, softly brushing smiles upon faces and hearts. I see the jazz begin in the way folks walk, in the way their eyes dance upon meeting. Perhaps that's why the warmth comes from within just as much, why the playing begins from youngest to old. It's when the laughter get's dialed up and jokes run free; it's when hugs travel on the breeze as sweet as any summer bloom.

The birdsong drifts as well as any summertime pollen. It comes as magical as any flute, as improvised as deep south jazz, and as soulful as love's kiss. In that moment I am present, feet still and heart open.

All around the grey rock broke the blue skyline in craggy peaks. Even in a photograph you could tell it was summer, for this range was only naked of its snow June through early September. The rest of the year they were as white-peaked as any storybook mountains. In any other year, at any other time I would have stood here in awe, admiring the view, revelling in this land God gave us. But now all I see is despair ahead. I can't just sit here and paint them, I have to cross them before the snow comes. After that I can't come back until it's gone again, who knows where I'll stay, how I'll live or even if I'll get back in time. It could be pointless, and if it is I'll never see her again. But if I don't go she'll know I never tried, that I choose to cherish her end rather than fight for the future she deserves.

After the heat and itchiness of the hike the lake looked like a basin of balm. Its water was entirely without motion, no tide brought it up the man-made beach. Despite the relentless sunrays the green-tinged water would be cool, this basin would likely be as deep as the mountains around were tall. Like the ocean, such a large volume heats and cools slower than the land or the air. Lila walked to the edge and sat to remove her boots, but she didn't stop there. In just a few seconds she was skinny dipping and she didn't care who saw. The cool water moved over her skin like a potion, removing the irritation and replacing it with a meditative peace.

The same sun that sent new green leaves bursting from blackened buds now turns the wands of knee high grasses golden. These spindles of plants shooting through the sidewalk cracks are enough to tell the children that summer is drawing to a close, waning along with the hours of daylight. This long awaited for vacation, this echo of a bygone era when the young were needed to bring in the harvest, has only days left. Only now there is no more labour in yellow fields, the closest the kids come to it is sitting on the crumbling concrete walls pulling off the swollen seeds.

When the dandelion bloomed Frank had inwardly smiled, he was in no hurry to pluck it. Every day on his way in from work he would glance at the yellow flower, as yellow as his morning butter, before opening the door to rest on his couch. Then one evening, as the days waned and the temperature cooled, he noticed it had become a fluffy sphere and he stopped. Finally it was a dandelion clock. He picked it and took in a deep breath. With each puff from his lungs he counted forwards by an hour. By "five o'clock" the stalk was empty and the seeds were in the wind, delicately carried away in the late summer air.

Hopscotch, with stolen chalk and the sun beating down, was how we spent the last of each Indian summer. Without computers or television we drew the squares on the crumbling street and numbered them. Stones were easy to come by, along with the mud and the sticks it was pretty much all we had. We learned to be creative with our rhymes, and to be honest, they got ruder with each passing year. Our bodies grew, our minds expanded, the street crumbled some more; but always the chalk was stolen and the stones were free.

Hot Enough for You? Words for the Summer Heat

Hearing one speak of the dog days of summer might make you think of a pooch panting with its tongue out during a heat wave. But despite the name, we can’t pin the sweltering August heat on man’s best friend.

The dog days get their name due to their association with the Dog Star, Sirius, found in the constellation Canis Major. Canicula is the Latin name for Sirius. The first visible rising of Sirius occurs during the hot stretch from early July to early September. The Greeks called this time of year hēmerai kynades , which the Romans translated into Latin as dies caniculares —the canicular days, or as we know them in English, "the dog days."

To scorch means to burn something so that it affects the color and texture of its surface. You might think of what happens when you leave an empty pan on the burner, but since it is also describes what happens when you get a sunburn, the use of scorcher for a day of extremely hot temperatures is more appropriate than you might think.

Fervid can describe anything that gives off intense heat (as Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote of “the fervid coals of the hearth around which we were clustering” in The Blithedale Romance ), but you are more likely to encounter the word today in descriptions of one’s intensity, enthusiasm, or zeal:

The distinctions among fervid and its close relatives fervent and perfervid are subtle. Fervid suggests an emotion spontaneously and feverishly expressed, while fervent is more often used a passionate feeling delivered with sincerity and consistency (“a fervent advocate for the environment”) and perfervid for expressions that are overwrought or beyond what is necessary (“a preacher known for wild, perfervid orations”).

As it describes hell, Inferno is the title of the first part of Dante Alighieri’s 14th-century epic poem The Divine Comedy —the other parts being Purgatorio ( Purgatory ) and Paradiso ( Heaven ). In Dante’s version, hell is composed of nine concentric circles, each circle housing a certain category of sinner: the greedy, the lustful, the gluttonous, the wrathful, the fraudulent, etc. The ninth and innermost circle, representing treachery, is where Satan resides.

In the late 19th century, newspapers were using inferno to refer to a large fire giving off intense heat. That use perhaps picked up popularity in the 1970s with the release of the hit disaster film The Towering Inferno .

Quite often, it’s not the heat that gets you, it’s the humidity. When speaking of the weather, sultry describes air that is hot and humid. The obsolete English verb sulter is an alteration of the much more familiar word swelter , meaning “to sweat” or “to become faint from heat.”

Calefaction

Calefaction is a rare word for the state of being warmed, deriving from Latin words for “to be warm” ( calēre ) and “to make” ( facere ). The verb chafe is an unlikely relative that took a path through Middle French and Middle English.

Calefaction is used almost exclusively in scientific contexts, though it occasionally turns up in more humorous uses:
