Synthpop Duo Static Phantoms Debut Shimming New Single “Something Bright”

  • September 22, 2023
  • Alice Teeple

During the pandemic’s enforced solitude, Dedric Moore (Monta, Gemini Revolution, The Republic Tigers) and Krysztof Nemeth (Emmaline Twist, Monta) found a silver lining. They took a deep dive into the anxiety-laden New Wave music that characterized the 1980s, straying from their traditional musical forays. Thus was born Static Phantoms , an inspired collaboration where the two delved into a contemporary interpretation of the Cold War’s ambiance. Their creative process birthed compositions that varied from gothic introspections to breezy lounge tracks, painting a nuanced musical portrait of an era long gone.

In Static Phantoms’ synth-pop offering, “ Something Bright, ” one can almost glimpse the celluloid shadows of a John Hughes film never made. With effervescent synthesizers and ethereal guitar strains, the lyrics narrate the story of a protagonist adrift, yet irresistibly endearing. The song navigates a delicate balance — it’s tinted with nostalgia yet exudes hope, evoking a wistful yearning even as it propels listeners to dance to memories of days past.

Drawing inspiration from revered ’80s luminaries such as The Glove, Tones on Tail, Tears For Fears, and Soft Cell — artists celebrated for producing music that transcended the mere aggregation of instruments — the duo fashioned a suite of compositions amid the pandemic’s shadowy interlude. Their creative stretch ranges from rousing guitar anthems to evocative synth-infused melodies, and from introspective gothic musings to breezy lounge pop reflections.

“Something Bright” is a masterclass in musical artistry: with nostalgic synths reminiscent of OMD, the elements of 1980s PBS theme songs, vocals that blur the lines between clarity and dreamlike haze, a rhythm that lulls and entrances, and a chorus that swells with a breathtaking grandeur; sounding like an echo in time, yet firmly present in the now.

Listen below:

Something Bright is out now via The Record Machine. The song was mixed and mastered by Joel Nanos at Element Recording.

“We wanted to pull out the sonic tricks that made the 80’s such a rich period of experimentation,” says Nemeth. ”New Wave and Pop Music were often created by duos or trios that utilized the studio to create a vibrant and massive sound from a minimal amount of core musicians.”

“Is the pandemic a fever-dream? Was it just a missing span of the calendar? A worm-hole? What would the soundtrack for these missing years be like? Would it be dark and gloomy, bright and hopeful….or, both?”  – Static Phantoms

On this blessed, rare day of twos, Dedric Moore (Monta at Odds) and Krysztof Nemeth (Emmaline Twist) have taken a detour from their usual gigs and joined forces with a new dream-pop outfit, Static Phantoms .

The duo is experimenting with a sparse yet active sound mired in 80s post-punk nostalgia, with copious synth flourishes and a gentle breakbeat, bringing to the forefront the “translucent waking dreams” spoken of in the lyrics. Bringing to mind OMD, New Order, The Wake, and a sprinkle of Kula Shaker, the psychedelic trip spans over thirty years. Static Phantoms take their cues in production from The Glove, Tones on Tail, Tears For Fears, and Soft Cell. They spent the dark days of the pandemic creating songs that ran the gamut of guitar-driven anthems to more synth-laden sounds, from gothic meditations to lounge pop explorations.

“We wanted to pull out the sonic tricks that made the 80’s such a rich period of experimentation,” says Nemeth. ”New Wave and Pop Music were often created by duos or trios that utilized the studio to create a vibrant and massive sound from a minimal amount of core musicians.”

“What makes this project different for me is the ability to explore more of the rock side of New Wave and Post-Punk,” Moore says. “It alters my synth playing and challenges how I approach chords and melodies. I also love sprinkling tasty little bits on the chord progressions that Krysztof came up with. It was freeing not to have to be in charge and just have fun with songs that touched on my inspirations.”

The title track to their upcoming album Bathed In a Blue Light is their first single on the Record Machine label.

"Considering how people scoffed at the idea of Static-X without their most recognisable member, this line-up continues to prove its worth." Static-X's Project: Regeneration Vol. 2 is worthy of the band's legacy

A decade on from the passing of wayne static, static-x's bizarre continuation are nonetheless going strong with solid - if a little rudimentary - industrial metal bangers.

Static-X

Considering most people would have fully expected Static-X to have ceased in the aftermath of iconic frontman Wayne Static’s passing in 2014, the current iteration of the band is a surprisingly enjoyable one.

Once you got past the somewhat troubling image of Wayne’s replacement Xer0 being positioned as a zombified version of his predecessor, the shows the band played in tribute to him were a great reminder of how many fun songs they had.

Maybe even more impressive was the fact that when Project: Regeneration Vol. 1 was released in 2020, they still sounded worthy of the Static-X name, even if it wasn’t quite up to the standard of the band’s excellent first pair of millennium-straddling albums, Wisconsin Death Trip and Machine .

So no one really should be too shocked that Project: Regeneration Vol. 2 is a perfectly serviceable, and often very enjoyable, Static-X album. It seems impossible to imagine that fans of the band won’t be delighted to hear the thumping electronic grooves, juddering riffs and manic, rasping vocal stylings of their patented death disco all present and correct on tracks like Z0mbie or Take Control . Both are hugely catchy and are guaranteed to get heads banging and hips swinging, despite being fairly rudimentary by 2024 standards.

Admittedly, there isn’t much in the way of growth, breadth or dynamism here, with every song being some kind of attempt at industrial rock floor filler. Fourteen tracks of that (including bonus tracks), though, does start to drag a bit, and a bemusing, clunky cover of Nine Inch Nails ’ Terrible Lie shows that Static-X fall short of being considered an A-list band from this genre.

These are just minor quibbles, though. Considering how many people scoffed at the very idea of Static-X without their most recognisable member when this reunion was announced, this line-up continues to prove its worth.
