IELTS Speaking: Free Lessons & Essential Tips

IELTS speaking tips, information, advice, model answers and topics to help you prepare successfully for your IELTS speaking test. This page contains everything you need to know and the essential skills for a high score in IELTS speaking.

IELTS Speaking Test Information

Below is essential information about the IELTS speaking test.

• The speaking test is face to face with an examiner in a room or via video call.
• There is only one speaking test for all candidates. Academic & GT candidates take the same speaking test.
• It is recorded so that you can ask for a remark later if you wish later.
• This is an informal speaking test, which means informal language is normal to use.
• The examiner who asks the questions will decide your results at the end of the test.
• The test lasts between 11 and 14 mins (not more and not less).
• The examiner controls the time and will decide when to move on to the next question.
• ID check and Greeting (not marked, but important to prepare for)
• about 3 topics (common everyday topics) with about 12 questions (4 to 5 mins)
• a talk from a cue card = 1 min preparation time, 2 mins speaking time & rounding off questions for 1 min.
• discussion based on world issues, the topic is usually based on your part 2 topic (4 to 5 mins)
• Fluency & Cohesion (25%)
• Vocabulary (25%)
• Grammar (25%)
• Pronunciation (25%)
