Starting the Essay

Step 1 Read the essay prompt carefully.

  • For example, an essay prompt may ask you to reflect on the theme of good versus evil in John Steinbeck's East of Eden .

Step 2 Brainstorm ideas for the essay.

  • Make a list of everything you know about the topic. This can be information you learned in class, as well as information you found on your own.
  • Write down keywords or key scenes in the text that respond to the essay prompt. Think about what words or scenes from the text come to mind when you think of a specific theme.
  • For example, when you brainstorm ideas on East of Eden , you may write down any moments in the text that seem to speak to the theme of good and evil.

Step 3 Create a thesis...

  • Your thesis statement will need to address the theme, your primary example or examples, and the stance you will take on the topic.
  • For example, your thesis might be: "In East of Eden , John Steinbeck rejects the Biblical idea of good and evil and instead focuses on the contradictions and complications found in good and evil."

Step 4 Outline the essay.

  • Introduction: Discuss landscape as metaphor, include thesis statement.
  • Body: Describe mountains in opening scene, elaborate on how they symbolize good vs. evil, state how characters live between the mountains, showing how people are caught between good and evil.
  • Conclusion: Restate thesis statement, return to landscape as metaphor.

Writing Your Essay

Step 1 Start with a hook.

  • Questions can make fun hooks for the reader. Ask a rhetorical question that relates to the theme of the essay, such as "How does one decide what is good and what is evil?"
  • You can also use a quote from the text as the hook. Find a quote in the text that explores the themes and ideas you'll be discussing in your essay.

Step 2 Introduce your supporting ideas.

  • For example, you may introduce the role of nature plays in the text to discuss the theme of good and evil. The first sentence of your body paragraph should discuss the role of nature. This will set up the paragraph and let the reader know what the focus of the paragraph will be.

Step 3 Use examples from the text.

  • For example, you may discuss the use of nature in the text in one paragraph. The body of the paragraph should then use quotes and scenes in the text to support this idea.
  • You might write,"The descriptions of the Gabilan Mountains in the text symbolize good and evil. The characters in the story live in the Salinas Valley, trapped in a gray area between these two extremes."

Step 4 Create a strong conclusion.

  • Ask yourself, "What do I want my readers to have learned through this essay?"
  • Remind readers about the essay's theme. Reference some of the arguments you made in the body of your essay, reinforcing how they support your original point.

Revising Your Essay

Step 1 Check the structure and flow of the essay.

  • Check that there are transitions between paragraphs. Look at the beginning of each paragraph to make sure they all flow well together.

Step 2 Look for any spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors.

  • Print out your paper and proofread it. Oftentimes, errors are easier to catch on paper. If you can't print out your paper, try changing the size or type of the font. A literary theme analysis will synthesize several elements within a work and prove an overall message with those elements.

  • Characters:  What kind of people does the story deal with?
  • Plot:  What do the characters do?  Are they in control of their lives, or are they controlled by fate?
  • Motivation:  Why do the characters behave as they do, and what motives dominate them?
  • Style:  How does the author perceive reality?
  • Tone:  What is the author's attitude towards his subject?
  • Values:  What are the values of the characters in the story?  What values does the author seem to promote?
  • The importance of theme in literature can be overestimated; the work of fiction is more than just the theme.  However, the theme allows the author to control or give order to his perceptions about life.
  • Think of the possible messages within the story – why was this story told (EX. Harry Potter series has a classic “good vs. evil” theme or even a finding out about one’s true self theme.  Maybe I would look at the symbolic fight between good and evil or at a coming of age story…Harry Potter series also has a look at family relations where blood family is not necessarily a person’s true family…)
  • Choose a theme/issue that will be supported with enough examples from text (EX.  Coming of age, Familial vs. adopted relations and how friends and mentors can become family)
  • State what you want to present about the theme in the story in the body of the paper

EX:  A true coming of age is seen in the characters Harry, Ron, and Hermione in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.  **Note:  This would be the X, Y, Z thesis

EX: Characters in Harry Potter’s life illustrate the notion that a father figure does not necessarily have to be one’s biological father.  **Note:  This thesis is put into a general thesis format, not X,Y, Z

Find evidence within the work to illustrate your points

Chapter 7: What is Theme and How do we Analyze its Development?

Everything we have been going over thus far–and everything we will cover in the subsequent chapters–has been leading up to the question of theme and how we analyze its development in works of fiction. Theme is generally described shorthandedly as an idea that a narrative is conveying. And that’s effectively what a theme is: narratives introduce certain subjects or issues through their arrangements of plot, character, and setting and the overall “spin” implicit in its mode of deploying this subject, its implicit “philosophy” of this topic, is what we call theme. Theme cannot be conveyed by one or two words: death, transcendence, and Igbo cultural identity are all subjects, not themes. The complex, nuanced overall “statement” that the narrative as a whole is making about the nature of this subject through its manner of treating it through narrative — that is the theme. So to take the previous examples, “death is the act that gives overall meaning to a life,” “art can allow us to transcend even the most grim and socially marginalized living circumstances,” and “Igbo cultural identity is not homogenous, but has always been somewhat multifarious and contested, even during the precolonial period” are all themes or thematic statements a work of fiction might be making about the subjects mentioned above.

When we articulate theme and then break down how that theme has been developed over the course of the narrative, providing good, systematic textual evidence to show how this has been accomplished, we are offering an interpretation of a work of fiction. And this is precisely what we are to do when we are called on to analyze a work of fiction; in middle school we are generally called on to just summarize the work (to prove that we have basic reading comprehension skills), but from here forward you are being called on to put into practice this higher order form of reading that we call interpretation—to tease out central themes that works of fiction are conveying through their artful arrangement of the different formal structures of fiction that we have been covering in this textbook.

So how do we pull everything we’ve been looking at together to arrive at a methodology for analyzing theme? Well, unlike with math, there are no set formulas to use time and again, because works of fiction draw on a lot of different strategies for developing theme. So we will have to read imaginatively and over time develop a critical sensibility of the sort we discussed in chapter 2. But there are some things we can look out for that in the vast majority of cases will put us on the right track of tracing a work’s development of theme:

  • The work’s title: Titles speak to what lies at the heart of a work. The title of this textbook, like those of all textbook’s, speaks in blunt, direct declarative language to its main focus. Works of popular fiction have titles that generally speak to their central plot focus either very literally, like in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone , or in approachably metaphorical terms, like in the Twilight series (twilight being that time of day where day and night meet, or here the children of day and night – humans and vampires). But works of literary fiction are by nature idea-driven, and their titles generally speak in some way, shape, or form (generally oblique or figurative) to a central theme (or themes) at the heart of the work. This may take the form of some central metaphor or symbol the text employs, suggesting the centrality of this metaphor or symbol to the themes the work is dealing with – as in the case of Hermann Hesse’s novel Steppenwolf , a narrative fundamentally about outsiderness and alienation. It may proceed by way of allusion, where a work “riffs” off the meanings contained in an earlier text, like William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury , whose title alludes to a line from Shakespeare’s Macbeth that says human beings make a lot of noise in life, but when all is said and done those lives don’t mean much (for more on allusion, see chapter 9). And sometimes a work takes its title from the name of a central character, suggesting that its core themes revolve around that character, like in Kurt Vonnegut’s story “Harrison Bergeron,” whose title character dramatizes the social dangers of too much exceptional individualism and too much forced equality.
  • Structure of conflict and resolution: As we discussed in our chapter on analyzing plot, the structure of conflict and resolution driving a narrative will put in play certain subjects or issues, and the overall take or inflection that the work as a whole gives to these is a central theme of the work. If we have a love plot, the work is going to be saying something about the nature of love, but also related concepts such as sexuality, relationship power dynamics, gender identity, and jealousy or possessiveness. A political drama will be intrinsically conveying certain themes about the political system that it represents, but also about such related issues as ambition, the nature of public opinion, the relationship between wealth and power, and/or betrayal.
  • Patterns of repetition and emphasis: When analyzing the development of theme, keep an eye out for repetitions: plot points, imagery, uncommon words, and so forth. If we see for instance, multiple sibling relationships featured in the plot, repeated fire imagery, or multiple uses of a word like “stygian” or “ardor” that one doesn’t encounter frequently, we should ask if this fits into a larger pattern of thematic development we see emerging in the text. Likewise, if a narrative stops and lingers descriptively over something that isn’t essential to advancing the plot—the books on a character’s bookcase or all of the furnishings in a large ballroom , for instance—we should stop and ask what role these details play in advancing the themes the narrative is developing.
  • Symbols and allusions: The next two chapters will look in depth at symbolism and allusion, but because their narrative function is to develop theme, a brief preview here is in order. Some objects, aspects of setting, names, etc. occurring in a narrative can be read as standing for an idea; this is what we call symbolism. Some conventional symbols are dogs symbolizing loyalty, red roses symbolizing passionate love, and a path representing the journey through life. But not all instances of symbolism draw on these kind of stock symbols. A narrative may develop its own symbols, using a fleet of garbage trucks to symbolize U.S. society’s obliviousness to the ecological costs of mass consumerism or a moldering old birthday cake to symbolize loss, regret, and the fleeting nature of elation. Since symbols advance ideas, when you recognize one, ask how it fits into the larger pattern of thematic development you are seeing in a narrative.

Another “tool” narratives use to develop theme is to make reference to other texts or to historical figures or events in a manner similar to sampling in music or hyperlinks on the worldwide web. Known as allusion, this is a way of borrowing or “piggy-backing” off of the themes developed in this reference to history or to another text. For instance, a character in a story could say he isn’t “into being his brother’s keeper,” verbally alluding to the story of Cain and Abel in the biblical Book of Genesis, with its complex mediation on the ethical obligations and violent rivalries that undergird fraternal relationships. Or a city in a narrative might be named Laghouat, alluding to the site of an 1852 French army massacre of Algerians in its brutal “pacification” of the country and thereby introducing the idea of mass violence in the service of imperialism.   • Dynamic characters: As we discussed in our chapter on analyzing characterization, if a major character changes in some way over the course of a narrative, the work is conveying some theme based on the nature of that change. For example, if a character encounters characters of different social backgrounds over the course of a narrative and consequently moves away from his close-mindedness and intolerance at the beginning of the narrative, then the story is saying that experience has the capacity to make people more open-minded and accepting of difference over time.

There are some additional key considerations we have to keep in mind when analyzing a work’s development of theme. For one, we have to analyze a work as a whole, as an entire textual unit with complex internal interrelationships, not just “cherry-pick” part of the narrative, ignoring how the themes it conveys receive further development elsewhere in the narrative. A novel, for instance might advance a certain idea about bravery in an earlier chapter, only to deeply challenge or qualify this idea with events that occur towards the end of the narrative. Another thing to keep in mind is just because a character expresses an idea doesn’t mean that the narrative as a whole embraces it. Works of fiction, especially novels, employ a kind of dissonant chorus of different voices and perspectives through different characters, some of whom only exist thematically to show how wrong-headed their viewpoint is. For example, a number of characters in Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises express anti-Semitic viewpoints, but this doesn’t mean that the work itself is anti-Semitic, just that it thematically explores the nature of anti-Semitism in relationship to the U.S. culture of the time. Similarly, very rarely is a character with all the answers going to stand up on a soap box and pontificate for the reader, directly and unalloyedly laying out theme; while there are certain works that do this, like Jack London’s socialist classic The Iron Heel , this kind of heavy-handed preachiness is considered unartful and hence is generally avoided in works of modern fiction—if you were to take a creative writing class in fiction writing, one of the first things you would be taught is that fiction should “show, not tell.” That is, expect themes to be developed through the unfolding of plot and character, not to be spelled out through blunt declarative language like that of an accounting textbook—because this is how fiction as a genre communicates: by making stories that illustrate certain things about the nature of their subject matter.

And finally, when analyzing the development of theme, make sure that you are laying out the abstract concept (theme) the narrative is conveying, then breaking down thoroughly how it has been developed through the development of plot, character, etc. and through such devices as symbolism and allusion—make sure that you are not just summarizing (recapping the major events of the plot). Ask yourself, are you saying that “The Tortoise and the Hare” is a story about the superiority of hard work and perseverance over inherent talent, then breaking down how this idea has been developed through the construction of the narrative, or are you just saying that “The Tortoise and the Hare” is a story about a turtle and a rabbit who get in a race that the turtle wins?

Suggested Short Story Readings to Accompany This Chapter

                Obviously all works of fiction convey themes, so just about any work could be used to compliment this chapter. My preference is for works with a relatively unambiguous development of themes that have not over time become clichéd or proverbial. James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues” is a good fit, as is George Saunders’s “Sea Oak” (because it challenges hegemonic notions regarding the American Dream and poverty) and Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron” (because U.S. students, being in the grip of hegemonic notions regarding freedom and totalitarianism, will tend to elide certain crucial textual details and fail to see the story’s satirical critique of incipient U.S. television culture).

What Is a Theme? Why Should You Care?

First things first: what exactly is a theme? In literature, a theme is a central topic a book deals with. This central topic is revealed through plot events, the actions and dialogue of the characters, and even the narrator's tone. Themes can be very broad, like love, money, or death, or more specific, like people versus technology, racial discrimination, or the American Dream.

In short, a book's theme can usually answer the question, "what's the point of this book?". They're the "so what?" of literary analysis. Also, note that books can definitely have more than one major theme —in Gatsby we identify seven!

Knowing a book's major theme(s) is crucial to writing essays, since many assignments want you to connect your argument to a book's theme. For example, you might be asked to write an essay about a prompt like this: "How does the life of Jay Gatsby exemplify (or deconstruct) the idea of the American Dream?" This prompt has you connect specific details in Jay Gatsby's life to the larger theme of the American Dream. This is why many teachers love theme essays: because they encourage you to connect small details to big ideas!

Overview of Key Themes in The Great Gatsby

Before we introduce our seven main themes, we'll briefly describe how the story and characters suggest the major Great Gatsby themes. Remember that the story is set in the 1920s, a period when America's economy was booming, and takes place in New York: specifically the wealthy Long Island towns of West Egg and East Egg, as well as Manhattan and Queens.

As you should know from the book ( check out our summary if you're still hazy on the details!), The Great Gatsby tells the story of James Gatz , a poor farm boy who manages to reinvent himself as the fabulously rich Jay Gatsby, only to be killed after an attempt to win over his old love Daisy Buchanan . Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan , and they're both from old money, causing them to look down Gatsby's newly rich crowd (and for Tom to look down at Gatsby himself).

Meanwhile, Tom is having an affair with Myrtle Wilson , the wife of mechanic George Wilson . Through the Wilsons, we see the struggles of the working class in dismal Queens , NY. As if they didn't already have it hard enough, Myrtle is killed in a hit-and-run accident (caused by Daisy Buchanan), and George, who's manipulated by Tom to believe that Jay Gatsby was both his wife's lover and her murderer, ends up shooting Gatsby and then himself.

The whole story is told by Nick Carraway , a second cousin of Daisy's and classmate of Tom's who moves in next to Gatsby's mansion and eventually befriends Jay -- and then comes to deeply admire him, despite or perhaps because of Jay's fervent desire to repeat his past with Daisy. The tragic chain of events at the novel's climax, along with the fact that both the Buchanans can easily retreat from the damage they caused, causes Nick to become disillusioned with life in New York and retreat back to his hometown in the Midwest.

Aside from having a very unhappy ending, the novel might just ruin swimming pools for you as well.

The fact that the major characters come from three distinct class backgrounds (working class, newly rich, and old money) suggests that class is a major theme. But the rampant materialism and the sheer amount of money spent by Gatsby himself is a huge issue and its own theme. Related to money and class, the fact that both Gatsby and the Wilsons strive to improve their positions in American society, only to end up dead, also suggests that the American Dream -- and specifically its hollowness -- is a key theme in the book as well.

But there are other themes at play here, too. Every major character is involved in at least one romantic relationship , revealing that they are all driven by love, sex, and desire -- a major theme. Also, the rampant bad behavior (crime, cheating, and finally murder) and lack of real justice makes ethics and morality a key theme. Death also looms large over the novel's plot, alongside the threat of failure.

And finally, a strong undercurrent to all of these themes is identity itself: can James Gatz really become Jay Gatsby, or was he doomed from the start? Can someone who is not from old money ever blend in with that crowd? Could Gatsby really aspire to repeat his past with Daisy, or is that past self gone forever?

In short, just by looking at the novel's plot, characters, and ending, we can already get a strong sense of Gatsby's major themes. Let's now look at each of those themes one by one (and be sure to check out the links to our full theme breakdowns!).

The 7 Major Great Gatsby Themes

Money and Materialism : Everyone in the novel is money-obsessed, whether they were born with money (Tom, Daisy, Jordan, and Nick to a lesser extent), whether they made a fortune (Gatsby), or whether they're eager for more (Myrtle and George). So why are the characters so materialistic? How does their materialism affect their choices? Get a guide to each of the characters' material motivations and how they shape the novel.

Society and Class: Building on the money and materialism theme, the novel draws clear distinctions between the kind of money you have: old money (inherited) or new money (earned). And there is also a clear difference between the lifestyles of the wealthy, who live on Long Island and commute freely to Manhattan, and the working class people stuck in between, mired in Queens. By the end of the novel, our main characters who are not old money (Gatsby, Myrtle, and George) are all dead, while the inherited-money club is still alive. What does this say about class in Gatsby? The American Dream : The American Dream is the idea anyone can make it in America (e.g. gain fame, fortune, and success) through enough hard work and determination. So is Jay Gatsby an example of the dream? Or does his involvement in crime suggest the Dream isn't actually real? And where does this leave the Wilsons, who are also eager to improve their lot in life but don't make it out of the novel alive? Finally, do the closing pages of the novel endorse the American Dream or write it off as a fantasy? Love, Desire, and Relationships : All of the major characters are driven by love, desire, or both, but only Tom and Daisy's marriage lasts out of the novel's five major relationships and affairs. Death and Failure: Nick narrates Gatsby two years after the events in question, and since he's obviously aware of the tragedy awaiting not only Gatsby but Myrtle and George as well, the novel has a sad, reflective, even mournful tone. Is the novel saying that ambition is inherently dangerous (especially in a classist society like 1920s America), or is it more concerned with the danger of Gatsby's intense desire to reclaim the past? Morality and Ethics: The novel is full of bad behavior: lying, cheating, physical abuse, crime, and finally murder. Yet none of the characters ever answer to the law, and God is only mentioned as an exclamation, or briefly projected onto an advertisement . Does the novel push for the need to fix this lack of morality, or does it accept it as the normal state of affairs in the "wild, wild East"?

The Mutability of Identity: Mutability just means "subject to change," so this theme is about how changeable (or not!) personal identity is. Do people really change? Or are our past selves always with us? And how would this shape our desire to reclaim parts of our past? Gatsby wants to have it both ways: to change himself from James Gatz into the sophisticated, wealthy Jay Gatsby, but also to preserve his past with Daisy. Does he fail because it's impossible to change? Because it's impossible to repeat the past? Or both?

How to Write About The Great Gatsby Themes

So now that you know about the major themes of The Great Gatsby , how can you go about writing about them? First up: look closely at your prompt.

Sometimes an essay prompt will come right out and ask you to write about a theme , for example "is The American Dream in Gatsby alive or dead?" or "Write about the relationships in Gatsby. What is the novel saying about the nature of love and desire?" For those essays, you will obviously be writing about one of the novel's major themes. But even though those prompts have big-picture questions, make sure to find small supporting details to help make your argument.

For example, if you're discussing the American Dream and arguing it's dead in the novel, don't just make that claim and be done with it. Instead, you can explore Gatsby's past as James Gatz, George Wilson's exhausted complacency, and Myrtle's treatment at the hands of Tom as examples of how the American Dream is treated in the novel. Obviously those examples are far from exhaustive, but hopefully you get the idea: find smaller details to support the larger argument.

On the other hand, many essay prompts about Gatsby will look like a question about something specific, like a character or symbol:

  • Explore Tom and Daisy as people who 'retreat into their money.'
  • What does the green light at the end of Daisy's dock represent? How does its meaning change throughout the novel?
  • Show how Fitzgerald uses clothing (and the changing of costumes) to tell the reader more about the characters and/or express theme(s).

These prompts are actually a chance for you to take that detailed analysis and connect it to one of the larger themes—in other words, even though the prompt doesn't state it explicitly, you should still be connecting those more focused topics to one of the big-picture themes.

For example, if you talk about Tom and Daisy Buchanan, you will definitely end up talking about society and class. If you talk about the green light, you will end up talking about dreams and goals, specifically the American Dream. And if you discuss clothing to talk about the characters, you will definitely touch on money and materialism, as well as society and class (like how Gatsby's pink suit makes him stand out as new money to Tom Buchanan, or how Myrtle adopts a different dress to play at being wealthy and sophisticated).

In short, for these more specific prompts, you start from the ground (small details and observations) and build up to discussing the larger themes, even if the prompt doesn't say to do so explicitly!

Introduction

You’ve been assigned a literary analysis paper—what does that even mean? Is it like a book report that you used to write in high school? Well, not really.

A literary analysis essay asks you to make an original argument about a poem, play, or work of fiction and support that argument with research and evidence from your careful reading of the text.

It can take many forms, such as a close reading of a text, critiquing the text through a particular literary theory, comparing one text to another, or criticizing another critic’s interpretation of the text. While there are many ways to structure a literary essay, writing this kind of essay follows generally follows a similar process for everyone

Crafting a good literary analysis essay begins with good close reading of the text, in which you have kept notes and observations as you read. This will help you with the first step, which is selecting a topic to write about—what jumped out as you read, what are you genuinely interested in? The next step is to focus your topic, developing it into an argument—why is this subject or observation important? Why should your reader care about it as much as you do? The third step is to gather evidence to support your argument, for literary analysis, support comes in the form of evidence from the text and from your research on what other literary critics have said about your topic. Only after you have performed these steps, are you ready to begin actually writing your essay.

Writing an Analysis of a Poem, Story, or Play

If you are taking a literature course, it is important that you know how to write an analysis—sometimes called an interpretation or a literary analysis or a critical reading or a critical analysis—of a story, a poem, and a play. Your instructor will probably assign such an analysis as part of the course assessment. On your mid-term or final exam, you might have to write an analysis of one or more of the poems and/or stories on your reading list. Or the dreaded “sight poem or story” might appear on an exam, a work that is not on the reading list, that you have not read before, but one your instructor includes on the exam to examine your ability to apply the active reading skills you have learned in class to produce, independently, an effective literary analysis.You might be asked to write instead or, or in addition to an analysis of a literary work, a more sophisticated essay in which you compare and contrast the protagonists of two stories, or the use of form and metaphor in two poems, or the tragic heroes in two plays.

You might learn some literary theory in your course and be asked to apply theory—feminist, Marxist, reader-response, psychoanalytic, new historicist, for example—to one or more of the works on your reading list. But the seminal assignment in a literature course is the analysis of the single poem, story, novel, or play, and, even if you do not have to complete this assignment specifically, it will form the basis of most of the other writing assignments you will be required to undertake in your literature class. There are several ways of structuring a literary analysis, and your instructor might issue specific instructions on how he or she wants this assignment done. The method presented here might not be identical to the one your instructor wants you to follow, but it will be easy enough to modify, if your instructor expects something a bit different, and it is a good default method, if your instructor does not issue more specific guidelines.You want to begin your analysis with a paragraph that provides the context of the work you are analyzing and a brief account of what you believe to be the poem or story or play’s main theme. At a minimum, your account of the work’s context will include the name of the author, the title of the work, its genre, and the date and place of publication. If there is an important biographical or historical context to the work, you should include that, as well.Try to express the work’s theme in one or two sentences. Theme, you will recall, is that insight into human experience the author offers to readers, usually revealed as the content, the drama, the plot of the poem, story, or play unfolds and the characters interact. Assessing theme can be a complex task. Authors usually show the theme; they don’t tell it. They rarely say, at the end of the story, words to this effect: “and the moral of my story is…” They tell their story, develop their characters, provide some kind of conflict—and from all of this theme emerges. Because identifying theme can be challenging and subjective, it is often a good idea to work through the rest of the analysis, then return to the beginning and assess theme in light of your analysis of the work’s other literary elements.Here is a good example of an introductory paragraph from Ben’s analysis of William Butler Yeats’ poem, “Among School Children.”

“Among School Children” was published in Yeats’ 1928 collection of poems The Tower. It was inspired by a visit Yeats made in 1926 to school in Waterford, an official visit in his capacity as a senator of the Irish Free State. In the course of the tour, Yeats reflects upon his own youth and the experiences that shaped the “sixty-year old, smiling public man” (line 8) he has become. Through his reflection, the theme of the poem emerges: a life has meaning when connections among apparently disparate experiences are forged into a unified whole.

In the body of your literature analysis, you want to guide your readers through a tour of the poem, story, or play, pausing along the way to comment on, analyze, interpret, and explain key incidents, descriptions, dialogue, symbols, the writer’s use of figurative language—any of the elements of literature that are relevant to a sound analysis of this particular work. Your main goal is to explain how the elements of literature work to elucidate, augment, and develop the theme. The elements of literature are common across genres: a story, a narrative poem, and a play all have a plot and characters. But certain genres privilege certain literary elements. In a poem, for example, form, imagery and metaphor might be especially important; in a story, setting and point-of-view might be more important than they are in a poem; in a play, dialogue, stage directions, lighting serve functions rarely relevant in the analysis of a story or poem.

The length of the body of an analysis of a literary work will usually depend upon the length of work being analyzed—the longer the work, the longer the analysis—though your instructor will likely establish a word limit for this assignment. Make certain that you do not simply paraphrase the plot of the story or play or the content of the poem. This is a common weakness in student literary analyses, especially when the analysis is of a poem or a play.

Here is a good example of two body paragraphs from Amelia’s analysis of “Araby” by James Joyce.

Within the story’s first few paragraphs occur several religious references which will accumulate as the story progresses. The narrator is a student at the Christian Brothers’ School; the former tenant of his house was a priest; he left behind books called The Abbot and The Devout Communicant. Near the end of the story’s second paragraph the narrator describes a “central apple tree” in the garden, under which is “the late tenant’s rusty bicycle pump.” We may begin to suspect the tree symbolizes the apple tree in the Garden of Eden and the bicycle pump, the snake which corrupted Eve, a stretch, perhaps, until Joyce’s fall-of-innocence theme becomes more apparent.

The narrator must continue to help his aunt with her errands, but, even when he is so occupied, his mind is on Mangan’s sister, as he tries to sort out his feelings for her. Here Joyce provides vivid insight into the mind of an adolescent boy at once elated and bewildered by his first crush. He wants to tell her of his “confused adoration,” but he does not know if he will ever have the chance. Joyce’s description of the pleasant tension consuming the narrator is conveyed in a striking simile, which continues to develop the narrator’s character, while echoing the religious imagery, so important to the story’s theme: “But my body was like a harp, and her words and gestures were like fingers, running along the wires.”

The concluding paragraph of your analysis should realize two goals. First, it should present your own opinion on the quality of the poem or story or play about which you have been writing. And, second, it should comment on the current relevance of the work. You should certainly comment on the enduring social relevance of the work you are explicating. You may comment, though you should never be obliged to do so, on the personal relevance of the work. Here is the concluding paragraph from Dao-Ming’s analysis of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest.

First performed in 1895, The Importance of Being Earnest has been made into a film, as recently as 2002 and is regularly revived by professional and amateur theatre companies. It endures not only because of the comic brilliance of its characters and their dialogue, but also because its satire still resonates with contemporary audiences. I am still amazed that I see in my own Asian mother a shadow of Lady Bracknell, with her obsession with finding for her daughter a husband who will maintain, if not, ideally, increase the family’s social status. We might like to think we are more liberated and socially sophisticated than our Victorian ancestors, but the starlets and eligible bachelors who star in current reality television programs illustrate the extent to which superficial concerns still influence decisions about love and even marriage. Even now, we can turn to Oscar Wilde to help us understand and laugh at those who are earnest in name only.

Dao-Ming’s conclusion is brief, but she does manage to praise the play, reaffirm its main theme, and explain its enduring appeal. And note how her last sentence cleverly establishes that sense of closure that is also a feature of an effective analysis.

You may, of course, modify the template that is presented here. Your instructor might favour a somewhat different approach to literary analysis. Its essence, though, will be your understanding and interpretation of the theme of the poem, story, or play and the skill with which the author shapes the elements of literature—plot, character, form, diction, setting, point of view—to support the theme.

The challenges of writing about english literature.

Writing begins with the act of reading . While this statement is true for most college papers, strong English papers tend to be the product of highly attentive reading (and rereading). When your instructors ask you to do a “close reading,” they are asking you to read not only for content, but also for structures and patterns. When you perform a close reading, then, you observe how form and content interact. In some cases, form reinforces content: for example, in John Donne’s Holy Sonnet 14, where the speaker invites God’s “force” “to break, blow, burn and make [him] new.” Here, the stressed monosyllables of the verbs “break,” “blow” and “burn” evoke aurally the force that the speaker invites from God. In other cases, form raises questions about content: for example, a repeated denial of guilt will likely raise questions about the speaker’s professed innocence. When you close read, take an inductive approach. Start by observing particular details in the text, such as a repeated image or word, an unexpected development, or even a contradiction. Often, a detail–such as a repeated image–can help you to identify a question about the text that warrants further examination. So annotate details that strike you as you read. Some of those details will eventually help you to work towards a thesis. And don’t worry if a detail seems trivial. If you can make a case about how an apparently trivial detail reveals something significant about the text, then your paper will have a thought-provoking thesis to argue.

Common Types of English Papers Many assignments will ask you to analyze a single text. Others, however, will ask you to read two or more texts in relation to each other, or to consider a text in light of claims made by other scholars and critics. For most assignments, close reading will be central to your paper. While some assignment guidelines will suggest topics and spell out expectations in detail, others will offer little more than a page limit. Approaching the writing process in the absence of assigned topics can be daunting, but remember that you have resources: in section, you will probably have encountered some examples of close reading; in lecture, you will have encountered some of the course’s central questions and claims. The paper is a chance for you to extend a claim offered in lecture, or to analyze a passage neglected in lecture. In either case, your analysis should do more than recapitulate claims aired in lecture and section. Because different instructors have different goals for an assignment, you should always ask your professor or TF if you have questions. These general guidelines should apply in most cases:

  • A close reading of a single text: Depending on the length of the text, you will need to be more or less selective about what you choose to consider. In the case of a sonnet, you will probably have enough room to analyze the text more thoroughly than you would in the case of a novel, for example, though even here you will probably not analyze every single detail. By contrast, in the case of a novel, you might analyze a repeated scene, image, or object (for example, scenes of train travel, images of decay, or objects such as or typewriters). Alternately, you might analyze a perplexing scene (such as a novel’s ending, albeit probably in relation to an earlier moment in the novel). But even when analyzing shorter works, you will need to be selective. Although you might notice numerous interesting details as you read, not all of those details will help you to organize a focused argument about the text. For example, if you are focusing on depictions of sensory experience in Keats’ “Ode to a Nightingale,” you probably do not need to analyze the image of a homeless Ruth in stanza 7, unless this image helps you to develop your case about sensory experience in the poem.
  • A theoretically-informed close reading. In some courses, you will be asked to analyze a poem, a play, or a novel by using a critical theory (psychoanalytic, postcolonial, gender, etc). For example, you might use Kristeva’s theory of abjection to analyze mother-daughter relations in Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved. Critical theories provide focus for your analysis; if “abjection” is the guiding concept for your paper, you should focus on the scenes in the novel that are most relevant to the concept.
  • A historically-informed close reading. In courses with a historicist orientation, you might use less self-consciously literary documents, such as newspapers or devotional manuals, to develop your analysis of a literary work. For example, to analyze how Robinson Crusoe makes sense of his island experiences, you might use Puritan tracts that narrate events in terms of how God organizes them. The tracts could help you to show not only how Robinson Crusoe draws on Puritan narrative conventions, but also—more significantly—how the novel revises those conventions.
  • A comparison of two texts When analyzing two texts, you might look for unexpected contrasts between apparently similar texts, or unexpected similarities between apparently dissimilar texts, or for how one text revises or transforms the other. Keep in mind that not all of the similarities, differences, and transformations you identify will be relevant to an argument about the relationship between the two texts. As you work towards a thesis, you will need to decide which of those similarities, differences, or transformations to focus on. Moreover, unless instructed otherwise, you do not need to allot equal space to each text (unless this 50/50 allocation serves your thesis well, of course). Often you will find that one text helps to develop your analysis of another text. For example, you might analyze the transformation of Ariel’s song from The Tempest in T. S. Eliot’s poem, The Waste Land. Insofar as this analysis is interested in the afterlife of Ariel’s song in a later poem, you would likely allot more space to analyzing allusions to Ariel’s song in The Waste Land (after initially establishing the song’s significance in Shakespeare’s play, of course).
  • A response paper A response paper is a great opportunity to practice your close reading skills without having to develop an entire argument. In most cases, a solid approach is to select a rich passage that rewards analysis (for example, one that depicts an important scene or a recurring image) and close read it. While response papers are a flexible genre, they are not invitations for impressionistic accounts of whether you liked the work or a particular character. Instead, you might use your close reading to raise a question about the text—to open up further investigation, rather than to supply a solution.
  • A research paper. In most cases, you will receive guidance from the professor on the scope of the research paper. It is likely that you will be expected to consult sources other than the assigned readings. Hollis is your best bet for book titles, and the MLA bibliography (available through e-resources) for articles. When reading articles, make sure that they have been peer reviewed; you might also ask your TF to recommend reputable journals in the field.

In the same way that we talk with our friends about the latest episode of Game of Thrones or newest Marvel movie, scholars communicate their ideas and interpretations of literature through written literary analysis essays. Literary analysis essays make us better readers of literature.

Only through careful reading and well-argued analysis can we reach new understandings and interpretations of texts that are sometimes hundreds of years old. Literary analysis brings new meaning and can shed new light on texts. Building from careful reading and selecting a topic that you are genuinely interested in, your argument supports how you read and understand a text. Using examples from the text you are discussing in the form of textual evidence further supports your reading. Well-researched literary analysis also includes information about what other scholars have written about a specific text or topic.

Literary analysis helps us to refine our ideas, question what we think we know, and often generates new knowledge about literature. Literary analysis essays allow you to discuss your own interpretation of a given text through careful examination of the choices the original author made in the text.

Thematic analysis is a method of analyzing qualitative data . It is usually applied to a set of texts, such as an interview or transcripts . The researcher closely examines the data to identify common themes – topics, ideas and patterns of meaning that come up repeatedly.

There are various approaches to conducting thematic analysis, but the most common form follows a six-step process: familiarization, coding, generating themes, reviewing themes, defining and naming themes, and writing up. Following this process can also help you avoid confirmation bias when formulating your analysis.

This process was originally developed for psychology research by Virginia Braun and Victoria Clarke . However, thematic analysis is a flexible method that can be adapted to many different kinds of research.

Thematic analysis is a good approach to research where you’re trying to find out something about people’s views, opinions, knowledge, experiences or values from a set of qualitative data – for example, interview transcripts , social media profiles, or survey responses .

Some types of research questions you might use thematic analysis to answer:

  • How do patients perceive doctors in a hospital setting?
  • What are young women’s experiences on dating sites?
  • What are non-experts’ ideas and opinions about climate change?
  • How is gender constructed in high school history teaching?

To answer any of these questions, you would collect data from a group of relevant participants and then analyze it. Thematic analysis allows you a lot of flexibility in interpreting the data, and allows you to approach large data sets more easily by sorting them into broad themes.

However, it also involves the risk of missing nuances in the data. Thematic analysis is often quite subjective and relies on the researcher’s judgement, so you have to reflect carefully on your own choices and interpretations.

Pay close attention to the data to ensure that you’re not picking up on things that are not there – or obscuring things that are.

Once you’ve decided to use thematic analysis, there are different approaches to consider.

There’s the distinction between inductive and deductive approaches:

  • An inductive approach involves allowing the data to determine your themes.
  • A deductive approach involves coming to the data with some preconceived themes you expect to find reflected there, based on theory or existing knowledge.

Ask yourself: Does my theoretical framework give me a strong idea of what kind of themes I expect to find in the data (deductive), or am I planning to develop my own framework based on what I find (inductive)?

There’s also the distinction between a semantic and a latent approach:

  • A semantic approach involves analyzing the explicit content of the data.
  • A latent approach involves reading into the subtext and assumptions underlying the data.

Ask yourself: Am I interested in people’s stated opinions (semantic) or in what their statements reveal about their assumptions and social context (latent)?

After you’ve decided thematic analysis is the right method for analyzing your data, and you’ve thought about the approach you’re going to take, you can follow the six steps developed by Braun and Clarke .

The first step is to get to know our data. It’s important to get a thorough overview of all the data we collected before we start analyzing individual items.

This might involve transcribing audio , reading through the text and taking initial notes, and generally looking through the data to get familiar with it.

Next up, we need to code the data. Coding means highlighting sections of our text – usually phrases or sentences – and coming up with shorthand labels or “codes” to describe their content.

Let’s take a short example text. Say we’re researching perceptions of climate change among conservative voters aged 50 and up, and we have collected data through a series of interviews. An extract from one interview looks like this:

Personally, I’m not sure. I think the climate is changing, sure, but I don’t know why or how. People say you should trust the experts, but who’s to say they don’t have their own reasons for pushing this narrative? I’m not saying they’re wrong, I’m just saying there’s reasons not to 100% trust them. The facts keep changing – it used to be called global warming.

In this extract, we’ve highlighted various phrases in different colors corresponding to different codes. Each code describes the idea or feeling expressed in that part of the text.

At this stage, we want to be thorough: we go through the transcript of every interview and highlight everything that jumps out as relevant or potentially interesting. As well as highlighting all the phrases and sentences that match these codes, we can keep adding new codes as we go through the text.

After we’ve been through the text, we collate together all the data into groups identified by code. These codes allow us to gain a a condensed overview of the main points and common meanings that recur throughout the data.

Next, we look over the codes we’ve created, identify patterns among them, and start coming up with themes.

Themes are generally broader than codes. Most of the time, you’ll combine several codes into a single theme. In our example, we might start combining codes into themes like this:

At this stage, we might decide that some of our codes are too vague or not relevant enough (for example, because they don’t appear very often in the data), so they can be discarded.

Other codes might become themes in their own right. In our example, we decided that the code “uncertainty” made sense as a theme, with some other codes incorporated into it.

Again, what we decide will vary according to what we’re trying to find out. We want to create potential themes that tell us something helpful about the data for our purposes.

Now we have to make sure that our themes are useful and accurate representations of the data. Here, we return to the data set and compare our themes against it. Are we missing anything? Are these themes really present in the data? What can we change to make our themes work better?

If we encounter problems with our themes, we might split them up, combine them, discard them or create new ones: whatever makes them more useful and accurate.

For example, we might decide upon looking through the data that “changing terminology” fits better under the “uncertainty” theme than under “distrust of experts,” since the data labelled with this code involves confusion, not necessarily distrust.

Now that you have a final list of themes, it’s time to name and define each of them.

Defining themes involves formulating exactly what we mean by each theme and figuring out how it helps us understand the data.

Naming themes involves coming up with a succinct and easily understandable name for each theme.

For example, we might look at “distrust of experts” and determine exactly who we mean by “experts” in this theme. We might decide that a better name for the theme is “distrust of authority” or “conspiracy thinking”.

Finally, we’ll write up our analysis of the data. Like all academic texts, writing up a thematic analysis requires an introduction to establish our research question, aims and approach.

We should also include a methodology section, describing how we collected the data (e.g. through semi-structured interviews or open-ended survey questions ) and explaining how we conducted the thematic analysis itself.

The results or findings section usually addresses each theme in turn. We describe how often the themes come up and what they mean, including examples from the data as evidence. Finally, our conclusion explains the main takeaways and shows how the analysis has answered our research question.

In our example, we might argue that conspiracy thinking about climate change is widespread among older conservative voters, point out the uncertainty with which many voters view the issue, and discuss the role of misinformation in respondents’ perceptions.

As a literary device, the purpose of theme is the main idea or underlying meaning that is explored by a writer in a work of literature. Writers can utilize a combination of elements in order to convey a story’s theme, including setting , plot , characters, dialogue , and more. For certain works of literature, such as fables , the theme is typically a “ moral ” or lesson for the reader. However, more complex works of literature tend to have a central theme that is open to interpretation and reflects a basic aspect of society or trait of humanity. My brother is also a physician, and also of high standing, and he says the same thing. • So I take phosphates or phosphites whichever it is, and tonics, and journeys, and air, and exercise, and am absolutely forbidden to “work” until I am well again. Personally, I disagree with their ideas. Personally, I believe that congenial work, with excitement and change, would do me good.

In her short story , Charlotte Perkins Gilman holds forth a revolutionary theme for the time period. The protagonist of the story is kept in a room with sickly yellow wall-paper as a means of “curing” her emotional and mental difficulties. Her husband, brother, and others are committed to keeping her idle. She is even separated from her baby. Rather than allow the narrator any agency over her daily life, they disregard her words and requests for the fact that she is a woman and considered incompetent.

Hughes’s well-known poem explores the universality of hope and dreams among humans and the devastating legacy of oppression in deferring such hope and dreams. Hughes structures the poem in the form of questions and responses addressing what happens to a dream deferred. This calls on the reader to consider their own dreams as well those of others, which underscores the theme that dreams, and the hope associated with them, is universal–regardless of race, faith, etc.

What is theme? Here’s a quick and simple definition:

A theme is a universal idea, lesson, or message explored throughout a work of literature. One key characteristic of literary themes is their universality, which is to say that themes are ideas that not only apply to the specific characters and events of a book or play, but also express broader truths about human experience that readers can apply to their own lives. For instance, John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath (about a family of tenant farmers who are displaced from their land in Oklahoma) is a book whose themes might be said to include the inhumanity of capitalism, as well as the vitality and necessity of family and friendship.

Some additional key details about theme:

  • All works of literature have themes. The same work can have multiple themes, and many different works explore the same or similar themes.
  • Themes are sometimes divided into thematic concepts and thematic statements . A work's thematic concept is the broader topic it touches upon (love, forgiveness, pain, etc.) while its thematic statement is what the work says about that topic. For example, the thematic concept of a romance novel might be love, and, depending on what happens in the story, its thematic statement might be that "Love is blind," or that "You can't buy love . "
  • Themes are almost never stated explicitly. Oftentimes you can identify a work's themes by looking for a repeating symbol , motif , or phrase that appears again and again throughout a story, since it often signals a recurring concept or idea.

Identifying Themes

Every work of literature—whether it's an essay, a novel, a poem, or something else—has at least one theme. Therefore, when analyzing a given work, it's always possible to discuss what the work is "about" on two separate levels: the more concrete level of the plot (i.e., what literally happens in the work), as well as the more abstract level of the theme (i.e., the concepts that the work deals with). Understanding the themes of a work is vital to understanding the work's significance—which is why, for example, every LitCharts Literature Guide uses a specific set of themes to help analyze the text.

Although some writers set out to explore certain themes in their work before they've even begun writing, many writers begin to write without a preconceived idea of the themes they want to explore—they simply allow the themes to emerge naturally through the writing process. But even when writers do set out to investigate a particular theme, they usually don't identify that theme explicitly in the work itself. Instead, each reader must come to their own conclusions about what themes are at play in a given work, and each reader will likely come away with a unique thematic interpretation or understanding of the work.

Symbol, Motif, and Leitwortstil

Writers often use three literary devices in particular—known as symbol , motif , and leitwortstil —to emphasize or hint at a work's underlying themes. Spotting these elements at work in a text can help you know where to look for its main themes.

  • Near the beginning of Romeo and Juliet , Benvolio promises to make Romeo feel better about Rosaline's rejection of him by introducing him to more beautiful women, saying "Compare [Rosaline's] face with some that I shall show….and I will make thee think thy swan a crow." Here, the swan is a symbol for how Rosaline appears to the adoring Romeo, while the crow is a symbol for how she will soon appear to him, after he has seen other, more beautiful women.
  • Symbols might occur once or twice in a book or play to represent an emotion, and in that case aren't necessarily related to a theme. However, if you start to see clusters of similar symbols appearing in a story, this may mean that the symbols are part of an overarching motif, in which case they very likely are related to a theme.
  • For example, Shakespeare uses the motif of "dark vs. light" in Romeo and Juliet to emphasize one of the play's main themes: the contradictory nature of love. To develop this theme, Shakespeare describes the experience of love by pairing contradictory, opposite symbols next to each other throughout the play: not only crows and swans, but also night and day, moon and sun. These paired symbols all fall into the overall pattern of "dark vs. light," and that overall pattern is called a motif.
  • A famous example is Kurt Vonnegut's repetition of the phrase "So it goes" throughout his novel Slaughterhouse Five , a novel which centers around the events of World War II. Vonnegut's narrator repeats the phrase each time he recounts a tragic story from the war, an effective demonstration of how the horrors of war have become normalized for the narrator. The constant repetition of the phrase emphasizes the novel's primary themes: the death and destruction of war, and the futility of trying to prevent or escape such destruction, and both of those things coupled with the author's skepticism that any of the destruction is necessary and that war-time tragedies "can't be helped."

Symbol, motif and leitwortstil are simply techniques that authors use to emphasize themes, and should not be confused with the actual thematic content at which they hint. That said, spotting these tools and patterns can give you valuable clues as to what might be the underlying themes of a work.

Thematic Concepts vs. Thematic Statements

A work's thematic concept is the broader topic it touches upon—for instance:

  • Forgiveness

while its thematic statement is the particular argument the writer makes about that topic through his or her work, such as:

  • Human judgement is imperfect.
  • Love cannot be bought.
  • Getting revenge on someone else will not fix your problems.
  • Learning to forgive is part of becoming an adult.

Should You Use Thematic Concepts or Thematic Statements?

Some people argue that when describing a theme in a work that simply writing a thematic concept is insufficient, and that instead the theme must be described in a full sentence as a thematic statement. Other people argue that a thematic statement, being a single sentence, usually creates an artificially simplistic description of a theme in a work and is therefore can actually be more misleading than helpful. There isn't really a right answer in this debate.

In our LitCharts literature study guides , we usually identify themes in headings as thematic concepts, and then explain the theme more fully in a few paragraphs. We find thematic statements limiting in fully exploring or explaining a the theme, and so we don't use them. Please note that this doesn't mean we only rely on thematic concepts—we spend paragraphs explaining a theme after we first identify a thematic concept. If you are asked to describe a theme in a text, you probably should usually try to at least develop a thematic statement about the text if you're not given the time or space to describe it more fully. For example, a statement that a book is about "the senselessness of violence" is a lot stronger and more compelling than just saying that the book is about "violence."

Identifying Thematic Statements

One way to try to to identify or describe the thematic statement within a particular work is to think through the following aspects of the text:

  • Plot: What are the main plot elements in the work, including the arc of the story, setting, and characters. What are the most important moments in the story? How does it end? How is the central conflict resolved?
  • Protagonist: Who is the main character, and what happens to him or her? How does he or she develop as a person over the course of the story?
  • Prominent symbols and motifs: Are there any motifs or symbols that are featured prominently in the work—for example, in the title, or recurring at important moments in the story—that might mirror some of the main themes?

After you've thought through these different parts of the text, consider what their answers might tell you about the thematic statement the text might be trying to make about any given thematic concept. The checklist above shouldn't be thought of as a precise formula for theme-finding, but rather as a set of guidelines, which will help you ask the right questions and arrive at an interesting thematic interpretation.

Theme Examples

The following examples not only illustrate how themes develop over the course of a work of literature, but they also demonstrate how paying careful attention to detail as you read will enable you to come to more compelling conclusions about those themes.

Themes in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby

Fitzgerald explores many themes in The Great Gatsby , among them the corruption of the American Dream .

  • The story's narrator is Minnesota-born Nick Caraway, a New York bonds salesman. Nick befriends Jay Gatsby, the protagonist, who is a wealthy man who throws extravagant parties at his mansion.
  • The central conflict of the novel is Gatsby's pursuit of Daisy, whom he met and fell in love with as a young man, but parted from during World War I.
  • He makes a fortune illegally by bootlegging alcohol, to become the sort of wealthy man he believes Daisy is attracted to, then buys a house near her home, where she lives with her husband.
  • While he does manage to re-enter Daisy's life, she ultimately abandons him and he dies as a result of her reckless, selfish behavior.
  • Gatsby's house is on the water, and he stares longingly across the water at a green light that hangs at the edge of a dock at Daisy's house which sits across a the bay. The symbol of the light appears multiple times in the novel—during the early stages of Gatsby's longing for Daisy, during his pursuit of her, and after he dies without winning her love. It symbolizes both his longing for daisy and the distance between them (the distance of space and time) that he believes (incorrectly) that he can bridge. 
  • In addition to the green light, the color green appears regularly in the novel. This motif of green broadens and shapes the symbolism of the green light and also influences the novel's themes. While green always remains associated with Gatsby's yearning for Daisy and the past, and also his ambitious striving to regain Daisy, it also through the motif of repeated green becomes associated with money, hypocrisy, and destruction. Gatsby's yearning for Daisy, which is idealistic in some ways, also becomes clearly corrupt in others, which more generally impacts what the novel is saying about dreams more generally and the American Dream in particular. 

Gatsby pursues the American Dream, driven by the idea that hard work can lead anyone from poverty to wealth, and he does so for a single reason: he's in love with Daisy. However, he pursues the dream dishonestly, making a fortune by illegal means, and ultimately fails to achieve his goal of winning Daisy's heart. Furthermore, when he actually gets close to winning Daisy's heart, she brings about his downfall. Through the story of Gatsby and Daisy, Fitzgerald expresses the point of view that the American Dream carries at its core an inherent corruption. Themes in Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart

In Things Fall Apart , Chinua Achebe explores the theme of the dangers of rigidly following tradition .

  • Okonkwo is obsessed with embodying the masculine ideals of traditional Igbo warrior culture.
  • Okonkwo's dedication to his clan's traditions is so extreme that it even alienates members of his own family, one of whom joins the Christians.
  • The central conflict: Okonkwo's community adapts to colonization in order to survive, becoming less warlike and allowing the minor injustices that the colonists inflict upon them to go unchallenged. Okonkwo, however, refuses to adapt.
  • At the end of the novel, Okonkwo impulsively kills a Christian out of anger. Recognizing that his community does not support his crime, Okonkwo kills himself in despair.
  • Clanswomen who give birth to twins abandon the babies in the forest to die, according to traditional beliefs that twins are evil.
  • Okonkwo kills his beloved adopted son, a prisoner of war, according to the clan's traditions.
  • Okonkwo sacrifices a goat in repentence, after severely beating his wife during the clan's holy week.

Through the tragic story of Okonkwo, Achebe is clearly dealing with the theme of tradition, but a close examination of the text reveals that he's also making a clear thematic statement that following traditions too rigidly leads people to the greatest sacrifice of all: that of personal agency . You can read more about this theme in Things Fall Apart   here .

Themes in Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken

Poem's have themes just as plot-driven narratives do. One theme that Robert Frost explores in this famous poem,  The Road Not Taken ,  is the illusory nature of free will .

  • The poem's speaker stands at a fork in the road, in a "yellow wood."
  • He (or she) looks down one path as far as possible, then takes the other, which seems less worn.
  • The speaker then admits that the paths are about equally worn—there's really no way to tell the difference—and that a layer of leaves covers both of the paths, indicating that neither has been traveled recently.
  • After taking the second path, the speaker finds comfort in the idea of taking the first path sometime in the future, but acknowledges that he or she is unlikely to ever return to that particular fork in the woods.
  • The speaker imagines how, "with a sigh" she will tell someone in the future, "I took the road less travelled—and that has made all the difference."
  • By wryly predicting his or her own need to romanticize, and retroactively justify, the chosen path, the speaker injects the poem with an unmistakeable hint of irony .
  • The speaker's journey is a symbol for life, and the two paths symbolize different life paths, with the road "less-travelled" representing the path of an individualist or lone-wolf. The fork where the two roads diverge represents an important life choice. The road "not taken" represents the life path that the speaker would have pursued had he or she had made different choices.

Frost's speaker has reached a fork in the road, which—according to the symbolic language of the poem—means that he or she must make an important life decision. However, the speaker doesn't really know anything about the choice at hand: the paths appear to be the same from the speaker's vantage point, and there's no way he or she can know where the path will lead in the long term. By showing that the only truly informed choice the speaker makes is how he or she explains their decision after they have already made it , Frost suggests that although we pretend to make our own choices, our lives are actually governed by chance.

What's the Function of Theme in Literature?

Themes are a huge part of what readers ultimately take away from a work of literature when they're done reading it. They're the universal lessons and ideas that we draw from our experiences of works of art: in other words, they're part of the whole reason anyone would want to pick up a book in the first place!

It would be difficult to write any sort of narrative that did not include any kind of theme. The narrative itself would have to be almost completely incoherent in order to seem theme-less, and even then readers would discern a theme about incoherence and meaninglessness. So themes are in that sense an intrinsic part of nearly all writing. At the same time, the themes that a writer is interested in exploring will significantly impact nearly all aspects of how a writer chooses to write a text. Some writers might know the themes they want to explore from the beginning of their writing process, and proceed from there. Others might have only a glimmer of an idea, or have new ideas as they write, and so the themes they address might shift and change as they write. In either case, though, the writer's ideas about his or her themes will influence how they write. 

One additional key detail about themes and how they work is that the process of identifying and interpreting them is often very personal and subjective. The subjective experience that readers bring to interpreting a work's themes is part of what makes literature so powerful: reading a book isn't simply a one-directional experience, in which the writer imparts their thoughts on life to the reader, already distilled into clear thematic statements. Rather, the process of reading and interpreting a work to discover its themes is an exchange in which readers parse the text to tease out the themes they find most relevant to their personal experience and interests.

When the novel begins, Scout is an innocent child who does not understand the ways of the world. “‘Don’t you ever do that again,’ I said. ‘Don’t you ever do that again, it’s bad enough having Jem tell on me without you adding to it.’” (Lee 9). Scout is chastised by her father, Atticus, for fighting with her cousin, Francis. In this quote, Scout does not understand why fighting is bad and must be scolded by Atticus. However, by the end of the novel, Scout has learned the true evil that exists in the world and has lost her innocence. “It was then that I finally understood Mrs. Dubose’s courage, not because she had won, but because she had had the courage to fight and the strength to lose.” (Lee 281). Scout has come to understand that even though Mrs. Dubose lost her battle with addiction, she was still brave for fighting it. Mrs. Dubose’s courage has taught Scout that even in the face of defeat, there is still hope. Scout has lost her innocence because she has learned that the world is not a perfect place and that people are not always good.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel about innocence—the loss of it, the destruction of it, and the fight to keep it. When you get done with a reading assignment for school, usually an essay, novel, or short story, you'll sometimes be asked to write a theme statement.

The definition of a theme statement can vary, but essentially it's asking you to state what the piece of writing was about — not the plot, but what sort of insight or perspective does it give on life/the world/human nature?

Theme is also sometimes known as the "main idea" of a story.

But how do you find the theme of a story? And how do you write a theme statement?

To write a theme statement, follow these 3 steps:

  • Pick the main topic addressed in the story
  • Pinpoint the author's view on the topic
  • Format that perspective using a theme statement template

Let's dive a little deeper:

Finding the theme of a story using topics

After you're finished reading the book, story, or essay (you did read it, right?!), think back on the main character or characters.

Did they undergo some kind of change throughout the journey? Did their outlook on life evolve in some way?

That's usually a pretty good place to start looking for the theme.

For example, maybe the story deals with the broad topic of "love." Well "love" by itself isn't a theme, but a specific perspective on love could be.

Try this exercise once you've found your topic. Fill in the blank:

"This author believes _____ about (topic)."

In our example about love, maybe the story's about how love conquers all. Or maybe it's about how love is fleeting and fickle.

Your theme at this point might look something like this:

"The author believes that true love doesn't really exist."

(A little dark, but hey, it's just an example!)

Using a theme statement template

Every teacher or instructor is going to have their own way of wanting you to present your theme statement, so be sure to get clarity on that directly from them.

That said, there are some agreed upon "rules" of writing theme statements.

  • Don't include specific characters or plot points. This perspective on life should apply to people and situations outside the story.
  • Don't be obvious. "War is bad," is not a theme. Dig a little deeper using details from the story. (What specifically is bad about war? How does it negatively impact the characters or the world of the story?)
  • Don't make it advicey. "You should always be there for your family," isn't a theme, it's a suggestion. Keep your theme statement objective and based solely on evidence from the story ("The bond between family can overcome any obstacle.")
  • Don't use cliches. "Once a cheater, always a cheater," or "Actions speak louder than words," aren't themes. They're just expressions people use all the time and have very little power or real insight.

Here is a general template you can use based on what we learned above:

"The central theme of (piece of writing) is (author's position on topic) ."

Alternatively, you could try: "In (piece of writing), (author) presents the idea that (position on topic)."

You may also be asked to use supporting details from the story to back up your theme statement. In that case, your full theme statement might look something like this:

"The central theme of (piece of writing) is (author's position on topic). When (event from the story) happens, it results in (blank), which demonstrates (some element of the theme)."

You're going to have to tweak and adjust this based on how much detail the assignment calls for and which examples from the text you choose to use, but it should be a good starting point!

The central theme of 'Finding Nemo' is that fear is sometimes more dangerous than danger itself.

Staff shortages limit access to health services. The bidirectional benefits of allied health clinical placements are understood in the domains of student learning, health service delivery, and future workforce development. Still, the benefits to current workforce outcomes remain unknown. This review provides insights into the effects of allied health student placements in acute and primary care settings, particularly on healthcare staff's knowledge and procedural skills.

This search was based on the integrative review process established by Whittemore and Knafl in 2005. In October 2023, the first author (MH) searched five major electronic databases: Medline-EBSCO, PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and Scopus. The CLUSTER model was used to track additional references. The first three authors (MH, SM, and SC) were involved in screening, quality appraisal, and synthesis of the studies. Data were thematically synthesised and analysed.

MeSH headings and keywords were used in key search areas: health education, health professional training, clinical placements, and allied health professions. The systematic search yielded 12 papers on allied health student placements across various healthcare settings in rural and metropolitan areas, with no high-quality methodologies measuring student placements' impact on staff knowledge and skills. Four main themes were identified from the analysis: meaningful student integration in service delivery, targeted educational support to healthcare staff, development of staff procedural skills and confidence, and the mechanisms of why student placements work in this aspect.

Conclusions

This review suggests that offering allied health student placement could be a promising approach to supporting rural healthcare staff in performing patient assessments and treatments proficiently and collaboratively. However, this requires further investigation to confirm.

Introduction

Healthcare staff shortages limit access to health services [ 1 ]. Four key areas for immediate attention in the Australian health context are food and nutrition, dementia care, the use of restrictive practices, and palliative care [ 2 ]. Allied health professionals have an important role to play in each of these areas. However, there is a critical shortage of allied health professionals and a higher turnover rate among allied health workers across Australia [ 2 , 3 ]. This shortage becomes more pronounced as the number of healthcare staff decreases with increasing remoteness [ 3 ]. Health service disparities persist between rural and metropolitan areas in Australia, with a gap in life expectancies (78 years compared to 82.5 years), a prevalence of chronic disease (21% vs 18% per 100,000 population), and potentially avoidable death rates (775.9 deaths vs 587.9 deaths per 100,000 population) [ 1 , 4 ]. Current funding and employment models have led to issues with recruitment and retention of allied health professionals and a shortage of staff [ 5 , 6 ]. For example, in 2018–19, only 29% of Australians used allied health services [ 7 ]. An additional challenge to upskilling healthcare staff is a lack of professional development opportunities [ 8 , 9 ]. Student placements have been identified as a potential approach for health workforce capacity building and support of health services delivery, especially in rural areas [ 9 , 10 , 11 ].

Various clinical training placement models exist to facilitate learning opportunities for medicine, nursing, and allied health students by integrating them into health service delivery for patients [ 12 ]. These placement models include practice-based learning [ 13 ], experiential learning [ 14 ], service-learning [ 15 ], work-integrated learning [ 16 ], and integrated clinical placements [ 17 ]. Clinical placements benefit students, educational institutions, and healthcare organisations in different ways, including personal growth and professional experience for students, academic rigour and service to the community for universities, and a workforce fit to practice in healthcare organisations. Evidence shows that clinical placements of students with exposure to acute and primary healthcare contexts are associated with better impacts in terms of students’ intellectual transformation [ 18 , 19 , 20 ], workforce capacity building [ 21 , 22 , 23 ], and patient health outcomes [ 24 , 25 ]. There remains a notable gap in research on allied health student placements that builds staff capability.

Educational and training resources designed for clinical supervision of allied health students during their placements can also serve as professional learning opportunities for healthcare staff. Professional development is imperative for healthcare staff to stay up to date with knowledge and technical skills and create innovative treatment planning. Complex and infrequently used clinical skills often deteriorate among health professionals, as confirmed in a systematic review by Main and Anderson [ 25 ] in Australia [ 26 ]. The National Health Workforce Strategy advocates for continuing professional education and training for health professionals so that professionals “maintain, improve, and broaden their knowledge, expertise, and competence, and develop the personal and professional qualities throughout their professional lives” [ 27 ]. Healthcare professionals have reported that ongoing education and training opportunities have improved their knowledge and procedural skills in client (e.g., patients, residents in aged care homes) care [ 28 ]. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, access to online professional development modules and training has improved [ 29 ]. However, a lingering question persists: can the co-creation of training programs and educational modules effectively contribute to the knowledge and skills development of both allied health students and healthcare staff?

A compelling association exists between student placements, health workforce capacity and capability building [ 30 ]. As noted earlier, student placements contribute to workforce recruitment and retention in rural and metropolitan areas by immersing them in health and social care settings. Throughout placements, students benefit from access to tutorials and clinical supervision [ 12 , 15 , 16 ]. Additionally, students and healthcare staff from different disciplines work collaboratively in a team during placements [ 31 ]. Pedagogical frameworks, including social learning theory [ 32 ], social constructivism [ 33 ], interprofessional learning [ 34 ], and community of practice [ 35 ] suggest that individuals working together learn with and from one another. The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety in 2021 recommends strengthening allied health services [ 2 ], particularly in rural areas; therefore, a review of existing literature is important to inform how and why the placements work to enhance the capability of healthcare staff in service delivery.

Aims of the study

This review aims to synthesise the effects of allied health student placements on healthcare staff's knowledge and procedural skills in acute and primary care settings.

Two main questions guided this review:

Q1: How do the studies describe the integration of allied health students in services design and delivery in acute and primary care settings? Q2: How do these studies describe the effectiveness of allied health student placements for current healthcare staff’s knowledge and procedural skills in acute and primary care settings?

This review adhered to the five steps of an integrative review process as its foundation, established by Whittemore and Knafl in 2005 [ 36 ]. These steps included problem identification, literature search, data evaluation, data analysis, and presentation. We systematically searched the literature and employed the Mixed Method Appraisal Tool (MMAT) to assess the quality and rigour of the selected papers [ 37 ]. The extracted data were then analysed and presented thematically.

Search strategy

The systematic search for published documents was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines [ 38 ]. In October 2023, the first author (MH) searched five electronic databases: Medline-EBSCO, PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and SCOPUS. A combination of MeSH headings and relevant concepts was used in crucial search areas: health education, health professional training, clinical placements, and allied health professions (the full search strategy is available in Table  1 ). The CLUSTER model was also employed to track sibling studies and citations for supplementary references.

Inclusion and exclusion criteria

The clinical placements are typically designed to immerse health students in real-life experience in acute and primary care settings with the aim of future workforce recruitment. Given the specific focus of this review on the impact of allied health student placements on the knowledge and procedural skills of existing healthcare staff, medical and nursing professions were not included in the search. The search was also limited to certain allied health disciplines based on the discussion with allied health clinicians and health service providers, such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dietetics, speech pathology, exercise physiology, social work, optometry, podiatry, psychology, and osteopathy. The inclusion criteria were articles and reports published in English, publication year 2001 to the present, descriptions of actual allied health student placements, and the placements aimed at enhancing the capacity and capabilities of current healthcare staff. Aligning with this review’s objectives and considering the scarcity of studies conducted in rural locations, the search was not restricted solely to rural placements. While the primary outcomes of allied health student placements predominantly centred on student learning, patient health and wellbeing, and workforce recruitment and retention, the studies that explored these aspects as their primary focus were not excluded when they identified the placements’ contribution to healthcare staff. Two reviewers, MH and HG independently screened the records retrieved by title, abstract, and full text. Discrepancies were discussed with a third reviewer, SM.

Quality appraisal

The MMAT criteria were used to assess the quality of studies, using a scale that spanned from 0, indicating no criteria met, to 5, indicating all criteria met, as detailed by Hong et al. in 2018. [ 37 ] To evaluate the studies, two reviewers, MH and HG, conducted separate assessments, allocating scores out of 5 (0—Unclear/No and 1: Yes). Through a consensus-driven process, it was determined that the papers included in this review exhibited a quality level that ranged from moderate (with a score of 3) to high (with a score of 5), as indicated in Table  2 .

Data extraction and analysis

Three reviewers, MH, SM, and SC, read the papers meeting the inclusion criteria multiple times to extract data. The extracted data were recorded separately by these three reviewers into Excel spreadsheets, with any discrepancies carefully cross-checked (Table  2 ). The extracted data included the study characteristics (author, year, country of origin, study design, study participants); characteristics of allied health student placements (placement setting, focus, participants, type of placement, the level of student involvement in service delivery); outcome data for existing healthcare staff’s knowledge and skills, as well as the limitations of these placements. Given that the selected studies were heterogeneous in methodologies, a thematic data synthesis was deemed the most appropriate approach [ 45 ]. The categories and sub-themes were independently identified by the reviewers, MH, SM, and SC, and were subsequently deliberated upon during review team meetings to determine the final themes and validate interpretations.

Figure  1 illustrates the selection process of the studies reviewed. Twelve papers that met the inclusion criteria represented the highest number over the past decade. Among these, eight studies used mixed methods for evaluating the placements, while two were qualitative and two were quantitative methodologies. The selected placements were mainly in Australia (10), with all papers originating from high-income countries, including the USA (1) and Canada (1). The healthcare settings were diverse across the placements; half were in residential aged care homes, while the rest were in hospitals, community health services, clinical skills centres, patient training centres, and non-government health organisations. The study participants included students, patients/residents, healthcare staff, health service managers, clinical educators, and relevant key stakeholders like family members and community organisations. Rural placement was reported in the majority of studies (7), but no studies compared the effects of different locations.

All twelve studies focused on either allied health student learning outcomes or service delivery across a range of settings by placing students. Most placement programs narrowly focused on the professional development of existing healthcare staff, while exclusive focus on this aspect was identified in four placement programs facilitated in hospitals, residential aged care homes, and community health services [ 39 , 47 , 49 , 50 ]. Undergraduate and postgraduate students from different allied health disciplines participated in the placements, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nutrition and dietetics, social work, and speech pathology. Some studies featured the collaboration between medicine, nursing, and allied health students [ 40 , 46 , 47 , 50 ]. Various types of placements were discussed, such as clinical placement [ 41 , 48 ]; work-integrated learning [ 42 ]; interprofessional team placement [ 40 , 43 , 49 ]; service-learning placement [ 39 , 44 , 47 , 50 ]; and simulated learning [ 51 ]. Interprofessional education was reported in most of the studies (8), and four studies provided information on the duration of placements, which ranged from four to ten weeks; in addition to detailing the types and focuses of the placements, the synthesis of outcome data revealed four key themes.

Meaningful student integration in service delivery

The integration of allied health students in health service delivery for patients was identified as a powerful and essential part of all placement programs. Student involvement in health service delivery was described by their engagement in a wide range of activities, from administration tasks and priority assessments to developing and implementing treatment plans and evaluating interventions. Eight studies reported direct engagement of students in developing treatment plans and designing and delivering services. Examples included person centred exercise programs, developing a sensory garden, implementing craft and cooking sessions for residents with dementia and training and upskilling care staff [ 39 , 40 , 44 , 46 , 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 ]. In contrast, four placement programs were restricted to organisations’ priority assessments [ 41 , 42 , 51 ]; shadowing a care worker and spending time with residents [ 43 ]; and planning and evaluation of interventions [ 41 , 42 , 51 ]. Student involvement in delivering direct health services to patients was identified in both urban and rural healthcare settings.

The extent of students’ involvement in delivering health services to patients was somewhat related to the degree to which the placement supported the capacity and capability building of existing healthcare staff. Integrating students in administrative tasks, priority assessments, and evaluation of the treatments contributed to staffing management and timely task completion, as well as a cultural shift towards collaboration among the staff [ 41 , 42 , 43 , 51 ]. Direct engagement of students in treatment plans and patient/resident care management was highly beneficial to a healthcare staff’s reflection and clinical reasoning [ 39 , 40 , 44 , 46 , 47 , 48 , 50 ]. Of note, none of the studies measured the causal relationships between the level of student integration in service delivery and the professional development of healthcare staff.

Targeted education support to healthcare staff

All studies reported that the placements led to an increase in knowledge, or had the potential to do so, for both students and healthcare staff. During these placements, various learning activities were offered to students, which, in turn, enhanced the knowledge of healthcare staff. For instance, learning activities like Grand Rounds and interprofessional education were implemented [ 44 , 46 , 47 , 50 , 51 ]. Key areas of learning for healthcare staff were identified in one evaluation study of interprofessional team placement in residential aged care homes [ 50 ], including mealtime positioning, post-stroke positioning, and medication management in palliative care. Additionally, one qualitative study described how the placements allowed healthcare staff to reorient themselves with the theories and methods behind the treatments [ 46 ]. Attending education and training sessions also helped the rural healthcare staff become familiar with the roles and responsibilities of other health disciplines [ 44 ].

Three studies reported that students generated new data and knowledge based on local evidence during their placements [ 41 , 42 , 50 ]. Two of the studies included rural placement of students [ 41 , 50 ], but all the studies confirmed that the students provided healthcare staff with current and innovative knowledge. This new knowledge supported the staff in strategic planning and prioritising patient assessments and treatments.

Development of staff procedural skills and confidence

Eight studies highlighted that allied health student placements were useful in developing procedural skills among healthcare staff. In four of these placements, student training sessions enhanced the healthcare staff’s efficiency in service delivery by reorienting them with the standards and procedures of the treatments [ 39 , 46 , 49 , 50 ]. Healthcare skills development various skills, including critical reflection, clinical reasoning, patient flow management, timely assessment and treatment of patients, continuity of care, clinical communication, patient safety, and evidence-based practice. The Delphi study conducted by MacBean et al. [ 43 ] in inpatient training centres in Australia provided insights into how the placements broaden the healthcare staff’s scope of practice in speech pathology, which was further complemented by the qualitative study of Kemp et al. [ 41 ] in Australian community health services. [ 42 , 51 ] Healthcare staff also gained confidence in performing clinical tasks during the student placements, with their abilities being questioned and affirmed [ 46 , 47 , 50 ]. Interprofessional team placements were found to be effective in two studies for team skills development [ 49 , 50 ]. Both rural and urban healthcare staff benefited equally from student placements in healthcare settings.

Why do student placements work? Insights into the mechanisms

This review identified the mechanisms underlying how the allied health student placements supported the professional development of healthcare staff in seven studies. While a cross-sectional study indicated non-statistically significant disadvantages of student placements in regional and rural residential aged care homes [ 48 ], six studies, spanning various healthcare settings, reported functional improvements in health service delivery attributed to student placements [ 39 , 40 , 42 , 46 , 49 , 50 ], regardless of the locations. These functional improvements in service delivery were because of additional training and resources, as well as active engagement in teaching, facilitating, and managing students within healthcare settings, which were identified as supportive for healthcare staff’s professional development [ 40 , 46 , 50 ]. Collaborative practice was found to be instrumental in reducing hierarchical culture among healthcare staff [ 43 , 49 ]. Additionally, the placements contributed to early patient readiness for discharge, providing staff with flexibility in using client care modalities, and questions from students increased staff awareness of evidence-based practice [ 39 , 50 ].

In order to facilitate discussions, the findings of this review are positioned within a general system theory framework (Fig.  2 ), enabling the assessment of inputs, transformational processes, outputs, and the environment within acute and primary healthcare settings.

The role of allied health student placements in fostering professional development of healthcare staff is promising, with most of the studies in this review showing positive evidence. Service-based placements, with a meaningful integration of students in health service delivery, show the most potential. Service-based placements might work by offering Grand Rounds and interprofessional education sessions to healthcare staff in critical areas of client care, generating new knowledge that can form powerful local evidence, and enhancing healthcare staff's understanding of other health professionals and service providers that can promote the collaborative practice. Regardless of the locations, active engagement in supervising and educating students and increasing awareness of training sessions have proved to be beneficial for healthcare staff in developing their professional knowledge and skills in client care.

There is a strong evidence base for the integration of allied health students into various aspects of client care, but engagement has varied. Student involvement in service delivery can be particularly powerful as it primarily emphasises the improvement of patient accessibility and utilisation of health services that are otherwise not accessible to them, especially in rural communities [ 52 , 53 ]. In the studies included in this integrative review, students played vital roles in the development of treatment plans, treatment of patients, and evaluation of interventions, and this integration was found to be beneficial to current health workforce capacity and capability building. Previous placement programs involving medical and nursing students corroborate the positive outcomes, citing the development of confidence and proficiency in both students and healthcare staff [ 54 , 55 ]. These programs recognised the bi-directional benefits of clinical placements. Since 2021, the Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) in Aged Care Program has supported University Departments of Rural Health (UDRHs) in Australia to expand their capacity to facilitate health student placements in aged care settings. This review is timely to inform clinical educators by providing insights to design education sessions that meet the learning needs of students and staff.

Within the limited number of studies available for review , education sessions during student placements appear to be important for developing professional knowledge and skills of healthcare staff. This review strengthens the previous study findings in medicine and nursing placements in acute care settings, stating that Grand Rounds and interprofessional education opportunities increased healthcare staff and students’ awareness of different aspects of client care and expertise of their own and other professions [ 56 , 57 , 58 , 59 ]. These ongoing sessions cover various aspects of client care and are likely to equip staff with theories behind the treatments. Rural healthcare staff often have limited access to professional development opportunities, as well as supervision of students that has the potential to add a new perspective to the staff workloads [ 11 , 59 , 60 ]. Rural healthcare staff in community settings may also have limited time to engage with professional learning opportunities in their normal work routine, so embedding opportunities for ongoing education in the workplace through student placements may be beneficial. Opportunities must be explored in collaboration with healthcare and community partners to ensure professional development and training is co-designed and co-delivered to meet their staff’s unique needs. Creating ongoing learning opportunities for staff and engaging them in student supervision is vital to the success of placements.

In terms of creative learning, the student placements’ contribution to generating new and local evidence emerges with some supporting findings. Many studies explored how students are engaged in reciprocal learning relationships with peers and healthcare staff in the domains of clinical knowledge and procedural skills [ 58 , 61 ]. Students bring new or different perspectives, up-to-date knowledge of evidence-based practice, do not have the workload expectations, and are not restricted by funding requirements. This allows students to bring a different perspective. Students often have more time to complete projects and create resources, and when co-designed with staff and patients, such resources can enhance both staff learning and patient outcomes. However, these bi-directional learning benefits receive less attention from educators and rural health service providers. It may be unclear what students could add to the knowledge and skills of staff who are already registered and experienced in delivering services. Evidence is limited on how to design education sessions for different learner groups.

The review suggests that active engagement of healthcare staff is often absent in student placements. While clinical educators currently take the responsibility for student supervision and management, a potential improvement could involve active engagement of healthcare staff in these aspects during placements, which may help address the two remaining questions. First, whether it is important to create collaborative learning environments before offering student-led education of staff. This could enhance understanding and knowledge of both staff and student roles, increasing collegiality and co-design of learning and knowledge. A second question is whether adding a co-supervision role for healthcare staff in the allied health student placements (by adapting the models of medicine and nursing placements in rural communities) is a viable option to enhance staff engagement. This role could upskill the current health workforce in rural areas, increasing the capacity to take student placements. This role may combine rural knowledge with an understanding of student models and seek to implement changes in practices developed from student placements.

Limitations

Developing the search strategy was challenging because of the diversity in placements, disciplines, settings, and associated terminology. This resulted in a search that yielded only 12 eligible studies for review. Since allied health student placements in rural healthcare settings have expanded across high-income countries in recent years, there will likely be articles under review about unsuccessful placements that could have provided additional insights. Further rigorous investigations are required to strengthen the evidence surrounding student placements’ contribution to improving rural health staff knowledge and procedural skills in client care. These investigations could delve into the unique workforce outcomes associated with individual allied health disciplines and consider the different levels of study among students (undergraduate vs postgraduate).

This review is the first synthesis of the impact of allied health student placements on the professional development of our current health workforce. To enhance staff knowledge and skills and address shortages, particularly in rural and remote communities, this review indicates the importance of student integration in the delivery of health services. A collaborative learning approach to increase the knowledge of students and staff and improve staff engagement in placements that promote interprofessional learning is key to the professional development of current staff in any healthcare setting. While there is little evidence of the generation of new knowledge by students during their placements, there is no indication that these placements disadvantage healthcare staff in relation to their professional development. Clinical educators may consider establishing co-supervision roles for rural healthcare staff to foster interactions between staff and students and to enhance positive learning experiences for both parties. Individually tailored and co-designed professional development opportunities could be important, for instance, to assist rural healthcare staff in reducing adverse events and ensuring adequate health services and the quality of integrated care.
