Trance Movie Review: Fahadh Faasil Aces As God, Man And The Devil In A Brilliantly-Made But Flawed Drama

Trance Movie Review: Fahadh Faasil Aces As God, Man And The Devil In A Brilliantly-Made But Flawed Drama

Director: Anwar Rasheed

Cast: Fahadh Faasil , Nazriya Nazim, Gautham Vasudev Menon , Soubin Shahir, Vinayakan

Spoilers Ahead

Anwar Rasheed's Trance, written by Vincent Vadakkan, begins by referring to Robert Zemeckis' sci-fi drama Contact . Among other things, the 1997 film explored the point of contact, not just between man (a woman, really) and extraterrestrial life-forms, but also between science and faith. Trance, too, invests heavily on this intersection. Let's say it deals with two kinds of drugs — the psychotropic sort (both legal and illegal) and religion/faith. If the first is being developed by scientists in laboratories, Trance shows us how religion too can be manufactured, not at temples or churches as one might think, but at five-star hotel lobbies (the lobby in the film looks like it's the abode of Gods) with a "we-mean-business"attitude you'd associate with a startup pitch or a job interview.

Trance is strongest when it deals with the topic of religion and one of its many by-products…godmen. So, when the film takes us into a job interview being conducted by a corporate big shot Solomon (an excellent Gautham Vasudev Menon), the position he's looking to fill is that of a miracle worker's. And the interviewee is Viju Prasad (Fahadh Faasil), a failed motivational speaker who has little to live for, and no real morals to live against.

An atheist whose room is adorned with graffiti of Mother Teresa, Viju has depression after the suicide of his lone family member (DOP Amal Neerad gives us a shot of this sad man holding onto a copy of The Power Of Positive Thinking) . But when this job offer presents itself, Viju forgets his atheism. He also forgets how he had failed to motivate even himself. Call it divine intervention, but it's at this point that he realises that the one ingredient missing in his 'Viju's Juice For Success' was a dash or two of The Holy Spirit.

Viju's transformation from man to godman is among the film's best stretches, making for an incredibly satisfying first half. He soon gets a rebirth of sorts when he's strategically re-named Pastor Joshua Carlton or JC (as in Jesus Christ), with a halo-like bright white light enveloping him during this phase, and powerful acapella hymns in the backdrop. JC also gets an effective coach in Avarachan (Dileesh Pothan), who not only teaches him the verses of the Bible, but also the showmanship and the tricks it takes to sell the power of God to those who need it. Like in gangster cinema, what we see here are the different stages of the anti-hero, driven by materialism and a broken moral compass.

But Trance is never satisfied with merely being an expose that shows us the seedy workings of a mega evangelical corporation. It also tries to take you deep into the inner workings of a mind that has never received the care it needed. This is where the film simultaneously gives us a commentary on the ill-effects of psychiatric medication and what it can do to a person. In a sense, Trance is about a bunch of people selling the drug of religion, even while being addicts of another kind.

It is here that the film starts to wobble and lose the clarity it possesses until then. By this point, the world of the film too has changed from the light, brightly-lit rooms of Gods and churches to those in darker and more vivid colours, in sync with JC's schizophrenic mind. It would take future viewings to really understand the many shifts the film makes here in terms of both theme and tone, but it quickly becomes confounding to keep track of it all.

There are many questions. What really is the incident that brings about the ethical dilemma in JC? Is it just a freak accident after a head injury, or is it genuinely the result of karma catching up? Does he ever really stop taking the medicines or does he continue to take them?

trance movie review greatandhra

This inconsistency is again the issue one has with Esther, the character played by Nazriya. At a deeper level, one understands how she's the angel to JC's Christ, especially after what seems like a resurrection. But in the screenplay, one struggles to understand her purpose, apart from merely being a "love interest". A subplot involving a worried father and the pastor he blindly trusts is great too, but again only on paper, with how it ends being predictable.

But these seem very tolerable in what is easily one of the most deliciously MADE films in Malayalam cinema, recently. What Trance is going for is extremely ambitious but this is complemented brilliantly by every department, right from Amal Neerad's career-best cinematography (it's his work that sends us into a trance-like state), Resul Pookutty's sound design, costumes by Mazhar Hamsa and art direction by Ajayan Challisery to  the stunning score by Sushin Shyam and Jackson Vijayan.

The performances too are just as good, with Fahadh capturing the many shades that fall between the mind of a man who is as much God as he is the Devil (watch out for a brilliant reinvention of the Godfather's climactic intercut). Trance is far from perfect, but it's bold like few films are, not just in terms of what it uncovers, but also for the sheer audacity to even attempt a film like this.

Score: 4.5/5

Anwar Rasheed makes films that somehow seep through the screen and envelope you in the very essence of a true cinematic experience. Ustad Hotel was a culinary journey that celebrated the joy of cooking and made you long for the taste of delicious biryani and a cup of Sulaimani. Trance is an acid trip into the mind of Viju Prasad (Fahadh Faasil), a failed motivational speaker who is struggling with mental illness.

Trance , written by Vincent Vadakkan, is a daring film that explores the serpentine odyssey of the creation of a billionaire Christian televangelist. The cinematography and the sound design of the tale lend a psychedelic feel to the narrative that makes the audience question what they're seeing. The scenes move thick and fast as Viju shifts his life from Kanyakumari to Mumbai. A down-on-his-luck insomniac losing his grip on reality is suddenly "discovered" by Solomon Davis (Gautham Vasudev Menon) and Issac Thomas (Chemban Vinod Jose) and is asked to step into a new destiny that promises fame and wealth beyond measure.

Avarachan (Dileesh Pothan) teaches and hammers the atheist Viju to transform him into the inspirational Pastor Joshua Carlton. Fahadh carries the movie with an infectious energy that bursts off the screen. He is brilliant in his portrayal of Viju's evolution as the character embraces his inner maniac and indulges in over-the-top theatricality that would not be out of place in a show from a master illusionist. The depiction of faith healers who create shock and awe with their amazing feats is spot-on in the screenplay.

The narrative makes it a point to show that a struggle with depression, unmonitored ingestion of antidepressants and an illusory lifestyle can combine to tear away the seams between dreams and reality. The audience is led to believe that Viju has bought into his own hype and has come to believe on some level in his incredible miracles. The background score, lighting and colour palette add a dreamlike quality to the proceedings.

The film accelerates at the halfway point, draws parallels with messianic prophets, plays with our perceptions and takes us to the edge of the supernatural. It is to the screenplay's credit that we aren't quite sure what to expect from one scene to the next. Anwar is able to deftly juggle multiple tones and intertwining storylines through the length of the flick. Nazriya Nazim has a fairly small role but she makes a memorable impact that resonates. Trance runs close to three hours but the story somehow flies by before you realise it.

A special mention has to be made of Soubin Shahir as TV journalist Mathews Thomas who engages in an enthralling battle of wills with Viju/Pastor Joshua.

The third act and final resolution might seem a tad predictable but looking back on it, the denouement actually feels fitting while also managing to do justice to the character of Viju.

Some works of cinema transcend the very foundations on which they are constructed while feeling authentic and creating a visceral snapshot of the human condition. Dileesh Pothan's Maheshinte Prathikaaram with Fahadh from 2016 comes to mind. Trance is another such effort that is courageous, thought-provoking and encourages conversations about issues that matter to us on a personal level and speaks to society as a whole. An avant-garde achievement in fimmaking anchored by a sublime Fahadh at his very best, Trance deserves all the plaudits that are sure to come its way.

Trance movie review.

trance movie review greatandhra

'Trance', starring the versatile Mollywood actor Fahadh Faasil in a complex role, has got a Telugu dubbed version.  The film is now premiering on Aha.  A critically-acclaimed psychological drama, the original version had arrived at the cinemas in February this year.  It's but natural to watch such acclaimed movies with high expectations.  Does the film live up to the hype?  Here we tell you in our review.

Viju Prasad (Fahadh Faasil) is seemingly timid, has no resources, he comes with a broken past and an unhappy present. But he sees a big dream. He wants to become huge enough to deliver a speech to an auditorium that is full of hyper-curious listeners. A low-paid motivational speaker in a town in Andhra Pradesh, he moves to Mumbai chasing an unrealistic dream after a personal tragedy.

He chances upon two dangerous businessmen (director Gautham Menon and Chemban Vinod), who entice him into taking up religious preaching. Viju is now Pastor Joshua Carlton, one of the most popular and richest miracle healers minting money for his backers.

All hell seems to break loose when he gives an interview to TV journalist Matthews, a seemingly fearless journalist. What happens in the course of that game-changing interview? How do he and his handlers plan to save themselves? Can Viju alias Joshua have redemption? Answers to these questions are found in the second half.

Performances

It's not for nothing that Fahadh Faasil is regarded as one of the best actors. His performance in 'Mashinthe Prathikaram', for example, is regarded as one of the most durable ones. In 'Trance', he literally saves one too many scenes. When he stares at the darkness, he is superb. When he enjoys the cheers of thousands, he is equally brilliant.

Dileesh Pothan exudes menace and is totally a delight to watch. After 'Kanulu Kanulanu Dochayante', Gautham Menon proves to be an enjoyable villain. Nazriya Nazim looks beautiful. All the other actors do a nice job.

Technical aspects

Sushin Shyam and Jackson Vijayan's BGM stays true to the genre. For a drama like this, the sound and vibe had to be different. A generic BGM would have been ill-fitting. Amal Neerad's cinematography becomes a character in many scenes, although it's found wanting in many portions in the second half.

Plus Points

The characterization of the male lead

The element of eccentricity doesn't look forced. It's organic to the lead character

Projection of corporate villainy

Bold depiction of religious scams in the name of miracle-healing

Brief dialogues

Understanding the psyche of the main characters

Minus Points

The second half is not gripping.

The length (167 minutes) is too long-drawn.

The meteoric rise of the hero as a Pastor should have been told in a more convincing way.

The characters can look quite stupid at times. For example, why would anybody drug a journalist for merely asking inconvenient questions? An interview can make a politician or a businessman look stupid, but no interview is known to have made a religious preacher look like a criminal.

Straightforward dialogues should have been avoided in some places. Like in that scene where the villains describe religion as a drug that feeds the emotions of people.

Nazriya's character adds to the drag.

'Trance' tries to be a heady cocktail of a psychological drama meeting the world of religious hysteria and corporate gangsterism. Like many Malayalam films, this one doesn't exploit its full potential.

Director Anwar Rasheed deserves full marks for courageously depicting the scandal called miracle-healing. Without hurting religious sentiments, the film also subtly hints that God is divine but he has been turned into a business machine by ugly men.

trance movie review greatandhra

Now streaming on:

"Trance", Danny Boyle 's new thriller, is slick, silly, and frequently very entertaining. Its vibe is twisty and pulpy. Its style is candy-colored visual escapism — every shot hyped up for maximum pop. Viewers who get hung up on story logic — or prefer movies that feature at least one sympathetic character — will spend much of "Trance"'s 101 minutes gritting their teeth.

The movie opens with a London auction house being robbed at gunpoint. Assistant auctioneer Simon ( James McAvoy ) is tasked with taking the auction's most valuable item — Francisco Goya's 1798 masterpiece "Witches in the Air" — to safety. On his way to the auction house's basement vault, Simon is intercepted by head robber Franck ( Vincent Cassel ). Franck knocks Simon unconscious and grabs the painting — or, rather, what he believes to be the painting. Once inside the getaway car, he discovers that the canvas has been cut from its frame.

In a movie that runs largely on outlandish plot twists, it hardly qualifies as a spoiler to reveal that Simon was in on the robbery. The problem, though, is that the knock on the head delivered by Franck has made him lose his memory; he can't remember where he hid the painting, or even why he hid it. After torture proves ineffective, Franck decides to try a more unorthodox method: hypnosis. He hands Simon an iPad ("Trance" is sick with Apple product placement) and lets him pick out a hypnotherapist. He chooses American expatriate Elizabeth ( Rosario Dawson ) because, he says, he likes her name.

It doesn't take long for Elizabeth to figure out that Simon isn't really looking for his lost car keys. She confronts the gang and makes Franck give her an equal share in exchange for retrieving "Witches in the Air." Simon, she says, can't remember what happened to it because of repressed anxieties. Finding the painting means first figuring out what makes Simon tick.

It goes without saying that Simon turns out to be more than just a patsy, and that Elizabeth's motivations go beyond wanting a break from the monotony of treating overeaters and premature ejaculators. Part of what makes "Trance" entertaining — if not especially believable — as narrative is its go-for-broke nihilism. Its plot plays fast and loose with the audience's sense of the characters, some of whom go from sympathetic to downright scary.

"Trance"'s major problem is also its selling point: It's a Danny Boyle  movie. Shot by Anthony Dod Mantle — who won an Oscar for his work on Boyle's " Slumdog Millionaire " (2008) and has shot all but one of the director's features since " 28 Days Later " (2002) — the movie has all of the hallmarks of a digital-era Danny Boyle  flick: hyper-saturated colors, deliberately mismatched angles, and eccentric compositions that disorient the viewer without ever embracing Tony Scott-style abstraction. While not as visually kaleidoscopic as " Slumdog Millionaire " or " 127 Hours " (2010), "Trance" is still a lot of fun to look at.

It has the sort of manic energy that makes Boyle's movies so interesting; unfortunately, it also has many of the flaws that make them so frustrating. It's no coincidence that most iconic moments in Boyle's work — the "Choose life…" monologue from " Trainspotting " (1996), the zombie attacks from " 28 Days Later " — involve the characters running. Boyle is a sprinter: His movies start out fast and energetic, but can't sustain the pace for too long. His career is full of films that are great for the first hour and then devolve into generic blandness (" Sunshine " (2007) and " The Beach " are two of the most obvious examples).

While "Trance" never falls apart, its closing stretch involves several shifts in emotional perspective that the movie doesn't really pull off. To make matters worse, Boyle ends the whole thing on a sentimental note which doesn't jibe with the nihilist tone of the final act (this is also a common Boyle problem). The awkward shoehorning of Big, Serious Themes into the pulp premise doesn't help, either. However, if you can look past the sputtering conclusion — or the pseudo-intellectual banter about memory, modern art, and other assorted nonsense — what you'll find is a brisk, breezy, style-heavy crime flick that happens to be one of the most purely entertaining movies Boyle has made in a long time.

Trance Movie Review: Fahadh Faasil Is The Heart & Soul Of This Gutsy Film!

Trance is a Malayalam drama film that features Fahadh Faasil in the lead role. The movie marks the comeback of popular filmmaker Anwar Rasheed after a long gap of 8 years. Nazriya Nazim appears as the female lead opposite Fahadh Faasil in Trance , which is scripted by Vincent Vadakkan.

Did the Fahadh Faasil-Anwar Rasheed project live up to expectations? Read Trance movie review here to know...

Trance Movie Review | Trance Review And Rating | Trance Critics Review | Trance Review

Viju Prasad (Fahadh Faasil) is a struggling motivational speaker from Kanyakumari. Viju relocates to Mumbai after an unfortunate incident turns his life upside down. In Mumbai, he meets Rozario (Gautham Menon) and Gilbert (Chemban Vinod Jose) and joins them, taking the new identity of Pastor Joshua Carlton. Meanwhile, he also crosses paths with Esther Lopez (Nazriya Nazim). What happens to Viju's life after his new friendships in Mumbai forms the crux of the story.

Script & Direction

Director Anwar Rasheed and writer Vincent Vadakkan truly deserve a big applause for making Trance , which is unarguably one of the bravest films ever made in Malayalam so far. The movie deals with a highly sensitive topic with utmost sensibility. The first half of the movie is totally on point with the engaging narrative, great style, amazing visuals, and perfect pace.

But, the second half doesn't quite match up with the standards set by the excellent first half. Even though the extremely stylish making saves the show, the second half loses its grip at certain points, especially when it comes to the picturing of Joshua's thought process. Also, the Joshua-Esther track looks forced and dragged.

However, Trance is nothing like you have seen or experienced in the Malayalam cinema before. Even if the Anwar Rasheed directorial might not be everyone's cup of tea, this gutsy film will surely impress the audiences who love unique movie experiences.

Performances

Trance Movie Review | Trance Review And Rating | Trance Critics Review | Trance Review

Fahadh Faasil is one of those rare actors who constantly reinvents himself with every passing film. The National Award winner's brilliant performance is unarguably the heart and soul of Trance . Fahadh truly astonishes in the role of Viju Prasad with his impeccable acting skills and unmatchable energy. The actor once again proves that he is one of the finest actors of Indian cinema.

Nazriya Nazim has finally shed her bubbly, girl next door image with the character Esther Lopez, and has played her part perfectly. Gautham Menon, the filmmaker who appears as Rozario, has excelled in his part. The rest of the star cast, including Soubin Shahir, Dileesh Pothan, Chemban Vinod Jose, Vinayakan, Sreenath Bhasi, Arjun Ashokan, Unnimaya Prasad, and so on, have played their respective roles to near perfection.

Technical Aspects

Amal Neerad once again proves he is one of the best cinematographers we have, with the extraordinary visuals of Trance . The brilliant cinematography makes the Anwar Rasheed directorial a visually-enthralling theatre experience. Praveen Prabhakar's editing is not up to the mark, as the movie loses its pace in the second half.

Jackson Vijayan makes a fantastic debut with the unique soundtrack of the movie, which totally goes hand-in-hand with the narrative. The background score by Jackson Vijayan and Sushin Shyam is just fantastic and completely elevates the overall experience.

Trance is a gutsy attempt and a totally unique movie experience. Watch it for the brilliant performances by the star cast, especially Fahadh Faasil, and the extraordinary theatre experience. But, this Anwar Rasheed movie is definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

Rang De Review: Predictable But Watchable

Rang De Review: Predictable But Watchable

Movie: Rang De Rating: 2.75/5 Banner: Sithara Entertainments Cast: Nithin, Keerthy Suresh, Naresh, Vennela Kishore, Abhinav Gomatam, Suhas, and others Music: Devi Sri Prasad Cinematography: PC Sreeram Editor: Naveen Nooli Art: Avinash Kolla Producer: Suryadevara Naga Vamsi Written and Direction: Venky Atluri Release Date: March 26, 2021

Although Nithin scored a flop with “Check”, he has succeeded in generating curiosity around “Rang De” due to its fun-filled theatrical trailer and the presence of Keerthy Suresh. Plus, the film is produced by successful production house Sithara Entertainments.

Let’s find out its merits and demerits.

Story: Arjun (Nithin) and Anu (Keerthy Suresh) are friends since their childhood. Arjun’s father compares him with her and scolds him to excel in his studies as she does.

While she develops a liking for him, Arjun doesn’t have any such feelings towards her.

After completion of Engineering, he plans to join a foreign university so that he would be free of getting compared to her.

When Anu’s marriage is fixed with someone, Arjun heaves a huge sigh of relief. But his happiness doesn’t stay for long, due to some circumstances she gets married to him.

How Arjun and Anu continue their marital life, and what problems crop up when they move to Dubai.

Artistes’ Performances: Nithin and Keerthy Suresh have maintained superb chemistry between them. They look good as a pair on screen. Nithin is convincing as a 24-year-old youngster and the role is a cakewalk for him. The versatile actress Keerthy Suresh does the playful role with so much conviction in the beginning and does the mature acting in the second half.

Vennela Kishore provides some laughs. Suhaas and Abhinav are okay. Naresh as Nithin’s father goes overboard. Rohini is okay. Vineeth is wasted.

Technical Excellence: Veteran cinematographer PC Sreeram’s cinematography catches our eye first in the film. He is known for capturing romantic moments aesthetically and he doesn’t disappoint this time as well. Though this pales in comparison with his earlier work, still it is a bright attraction.

Devi Sri Prasad’s music is good. Two songs are catchy. Dialogues are okay.

Highlights: Comedy elements here and there Keerthy and Nithin’s face-off DSP’s songs

Drawback: Routine scenes Predictability

Analysis There are many films in these lines and so the efforts are needed in a big way to make it appear out of the box. There is nothing wrong in choosing any 'same old story', but all that matters is how to hook the audience in the best way possible.

The plot of "Rang De" is simple and routine. Predictability is written all over it. From “Nuvve Kaavali” to Atluri’s “Toli Prema”, we have seen many such films, scenes, and situations.

Director Venky Atluri doesn’t even try to project it differently. All he does is tell the same scenes and the oft-repeated story with a dash of entertainment. He succeeds in the comedy part.

There is enough fun in the first half. It is revealed that Keerthy Suresh is very much in love with Nithin and she is putting him in trouble, always out of her love for him.

The sequences of Nithin trying to score in the GMAT exam and Keerthy Suresh planting a kiss on Nithin on her wedding day are hilarious and convincing. The film works in such moments. The interval bang involves us in the story.

But Venky Atluri prefers to transport a part of his stories to a foreign location (he did in ‘Mr Majnu’ and ‘Tholi Prema’) and prolongs the story with all kinds of tricks.

Here, the second half shifts to Dubai, and the usual routine comedy sequences occupy much space. The entire Dubai episode is unconvincing and looks edited in a patchy manner. Many scenes give a rushed feel.

Luckily, the climax scenes are better handled. Due to this reason, the film gets saved from turning into a mediocre effort. However, the lame attempt of telling the old story with fun and forced emotions doesn't go unnoticed.

On the whole, Devi Sri Prasad's music, the lead pair’s face-off, and entertaining first half make this regular rom-com watchable. Despite its predictability, it ends as a decent movie.

Bottom-line: Okay Okay

  6. Trance Movie Review

In 'Trance', he literally saves one too many scenes. When he stares at the darkness, he is superb. When he enjoys the cheers of thousands, he is equally brilliant.
