Content Writing Cornell Certificate Program

Overview and courses.

Crafting effective content and copy is an essential skill for anyone looking to spread a message. Whether creating content for a social media brand strategy, writing an executive brief, or developing an email campaign, writing effective copy to deliver the right content, to the right audience, at the right time, is the key to success.

This certificate program provides an opportunity to strengthen your copywriting and content writing skills. You will examine how to write content that attracts attention and engages the reader in a manner that increases the likelihood that your message is received. You will review writing commonalities that transcend content type and delivery methods. You will then explore diverse applications and practice specific writing assignments, whether writing a post for a website or social media, creating a press release or media story, or composing an email summarizing a policy change or new business opportunity. Through each course, you have the opportunity to put each concept into practice for writing types and audiences of your choice. By the end of this program, you will have developed a set of best practices to make you a better writer.

For the best experience in this program it is recommended to take these courses in the order that they appear.

This program includes a year of free access to Symposium! These events feature several days of live, highly participatory virtual Zoom sessions with Cornell faculty and experts to explore the marketing industry’s most pressing topics. Symposium events are held several times throughout the year. Once enrolled in your program, you will receive information about upcoming events. Throughout the year, you may participate in as many sessions as you wish. Attending Symposium sessions is not required to successfully complete the certificate program.

Course list

Writing concise copy.

Writing concise copy is a crucial skill for any professional looking to communicate complex ideas to an internal or external audience.

This course provides you with important insights about how to write concisely for various professional applications, including effective issue and topic summaries, policy briefs, and memos. You will investigate how to incorporate and summarize complex content as well as how to establish an effective writing format, style, and tone for a given writing product. Finally, you will convert complex or technical content into a concise copy that is understandable for a non-expert audience. By the end of this course, you will be able to craft accessible, information-based copy describing or defining an issue, event, or activity.

Writing Persuasive Copy

Persuasive writing provides an opportunity to influence readers and help facilitate change. Any time you write material that attempts to encourage action, shape opinion, analyze options, or influence perception or direction, you are engaged in persuasive writing.

In this course, you will be introduced to a three-step process that will enable you to create compelling, fact-supported analyses, arguments, opinions, and recommendations to influence others. You will then be guided through the process of establishing strong, reasoned content while writing persuasive copy for an audience of your choice. By the end of this course, you will have practiced writing clear, concise copy that persuades readers to engage with and act upon your arguments and recommendations.

Writing Web Copy

In today's communication landscape, writing effective web copy is one of the most important skills you can master. Websites are the primary way that organizations communicate with customers, stakeholders, and an interested public. Crafting effective, tailored web content is an essential skill for communication professionals and others tasked with creating website content.

In this course, you will practice skills that will help you master writing web copy for maximum understanding, engagement, and impact. These skills require approaching communication from multiple angles — from the big-picture view to the precise language you use. In this course, you will be provided with tools and guidance that will help you define your intended audience and create written copy that will make your website stand out from the crowd — not only capturing but maintaining your audience's attention in a meaningful way.

Writing Online Media Copy

Crafting media stories for the online world is a critical skill for any professional who engages in communication with the general public. This flexible form of writing is used for public relations, marketing, blogs and informative stories. The media format is highly adaptable and is the foundation of press releases, event announcements, newsletters, articles, and other forms of communication with public audiences.

This course delves into the best practices for writing for online media. You will start by exploring the basics of effective writing skills and how to apply them in a variety of digital formats to strengthen your foundation. By creating effective headlines and openers, you will discover how to grab your reader's attention and keep them engaged. Using narrative techniques, you will develop the skills to build on your reader's attention and draw your audience in. Ultimately, by refining your transitions, word choice, voice, rhythm, and paragraph structure, you will leave this course with a stronger skill set in media writing.

Writing Social Media Copy

Creating engaging social media content is critical in today's multimedia world. Even the most seasoned writers often fail to create effective posts; social media platforms differ in content and scope, and the landscape changes quickly. Mastering fundamental best practices and avoiding some of the most common mistakes will greatly enhance your communication strategy, no matter which social media platforms you use.

In this course, you will practice amplifying your online content by using social media platforms to drive traffic and increase sharing. You will explore the proven “hub and spoke” concept to drive readers to your central website content. By learning how to differentiate your content depending on the platform, you will more efficiently reach and resonate with your target audience. Forming an overarching strategic social media approach before you craft individual posts will ensure your messaging has maximum impact. By the end of this program, you will have the skills you need to write punchy, powerful text that readers both enjoy and trust.

Marketing Symposium   LIVE

Symposium sessions feature two days of live, highly interactive virtual Zoom sessions that will explore today’s most pressing topics. The Marketing Symposium offers you a unique opportunity to engage in real-time conversations with peers and experts from the Cornell community and beyond. Using the context of your own experiences, you will take part in reflections and small-group discussions to build on the skills and knowledge you have gained from your courses.

From monster to mouse: a content strategy for inaccessible pdfs.

March 21, 2024

What to do with all those old PDFs on your website? You can't convert them all into accessible PDFs. That could take years! And it's not a good use of your resources.  You could put your head in the sand and pretend the problem does not exist. But that's not what a content hero, who creates positive user experiences and cares about accessibility, would do. A content hero would confront the monster and break the problem down into manageable pieces.

WCAG accessibility skills: a content hero's journey worth taking

March 06, 2024

Who needs accessible content and why is it important? Accessible content is content that is accessible to anyone, regardless of their abilities.  Many people with disabilities have to use special computers, browsers, software, hardware and techniques to access and use digital content. If you produce web pages, social media content, docs, PDFs, audio, or video for citizens, your content must work for all these scenarios.

We have your back: in this guide, we’ve selected some of the best online courses for freelance writers, but also resources to become a better content writer and to secure a job.

Becoming a freelance writer is not that easy as it sounds: you may think that you only need to know your language, grammar, and how to write correctly. The truth is that to become a good freelance writer, you need to know all of the above, but you also need to know the techniques to communicate appropriately and to create content that is suitable for the audience you have to reach.

The point above leads to one of the essential things to consider when it comes to freelance writing: writing is too generic because there are multiple types of writing, based on the industry, the kind of content to create, and the message to create.

These are some of writings:

  • Fiction Writing (prose and poetry, novels, screenplays, short stories, and stories)
  • Nonfiction Writing (personal essays, opinion pieces, articles for newspapers and magazines, everything that is factual, bios, etc.)
  • Content Writing (copywriting, memos, reports, all the content that has conversions and leads’ generation as a primary goal)

These three types of writing can then be further divided by niche, company type, and audience in demographic but also geographic terms; as you can see, freelance writing means a lot of things, and can be pretty comprehensive.

In this article, we will be focusing just on content writing.

Content writing is the process of creating web content, typically for digital marketing purposes. Whether it is a proper blog post with advice to get readers or a review to sell something or a social media post to create engagement, the goal of content writing is always the same : converting, at different levels.

8 Free Courses For Writers & Content Marketers

There are tons of free online courses out there to help improve your content. Here are a few author favorites.

Check out these free courses on content marketing and writing.

Increasing online competition and advancements in search technologies mean that writing content is about more than just having a solid grasp of the English language.

Great content that performs well takes into account a variety of marketing factors that not even the most seasoned writers are necessarily familiar with.

Before beginning to write content, you’ll want to consider:

  • How you’re going to optimize the piece with keywords, topical relevance, internal linking, and more.
  • How you’ll write for a diverse audience .
  • How you’ll ensure all of the writing has a consistent tone and style.
  • Whether you should hire writers who are experts in the subject matter, or writers who are experts at writing online content. In certain industries, it can be tough to find both.
  • How much will you pay your writers?
  • How many articles you are able to write and publish per week.
  • Who is going to manage the content when it comes to responding to comments, making sure links are not broken, etc.
  • In terms of marketing, which analytics reports you are going to use to make conclusions about the success or failure of each piece.
  • How you will incorporate different content types – video, infographics, ebooks, polls, reviews, interviews, etc.

It’s safe to say that if you want to write successful content that gets a lot of attention, it’s probably a good idea to get some training on both writing and marketing.

Fortunately, getting the training you need doesn’t have to mean shelling out a lot of money from your budget.

There are tons of free online courses that can help you learn everything you need to know to get the links and shares your business needs.

Read on for some favorites from myself and friends!

Top 8 Free Online Courses On Content Marketing & Writing

Disclaimer: I have not taken all of the courses listed below, but I have taken a few, and I know at least one person who has recommended the others.

They’ve also received numerous positive reviews from the hundreds of others who have taken the courses.

Without further ado, below are some of the best out there.

Skillshare Courses

Skillshare allows you to start free for 14 days, and then after that, it is a yearly fee of $96.00.

Once you pay for the membership, all of the classes are free within Skillshare.

If you don’t want to purchase a membership, the courses below can be purchased separately for anywhere from $10-20.

Still, I’ve added them to the list because you can get quite a few courses done for free during your 14-day trial.

1. Content Marketing: Blogging for Growth

This course is taught by Eric Siu , CEO of Single Grain and Founder at Growth Everywhere.

This 80-minute class will teach you various blog-writing styles, how to brainstorm a topic, and then develop your notes from a brainstorming session to a full-on blog post. He even goes into detail on how to create an engaging headline and feature image.

This is a beginner course perfect for business owners and marketers, and it has a 95% positive review rate.

At the end of the course, you’ll have written an original blog post to share, which hopefully will be the first in a successful content marketing strategy!

2. Become a Better Blogger: Content Planning

This is a course by Andrea Goulet Ford of Corgibytes, a team of expert developers who not only offer maintenance services, but courses to boot!

Ford was an unknown name to me, but her loyal followers seem to swear by her advice, so I gave the course a try and was very impressed.

She has worked with government agencies, Fortune 500 companies, and many more across the board.

This subject matter seems fairly simple, but planning can be very intricate. She helps you create a resource library to refer back to in the future, AND she makes sure that you walk away with three months’ worth of online content all planned out.

Udemy Courses

Udemy is probably the most popular avenue for online marketers when it comes to taking free classes.

They have free options (all mentioned below) as well as paid options and offer more than 32,000 courses, 18,000 instructors, and 80+ course languages.

3. Content Marketing for B2B Enterprises

This course is best for B2B companies, but it’s worth mentioning because it’s one of the few good Udemy classes that are free.

The course is by William Flanagan , CEO and Founder of Audienti, and it’s great because it uses actual scenarios that Flanagan has dealt with in his own business as well as of his clients.

There are six sections to the class, including Creating Interesting Relevant Content, Publishing Content for Conversion, and Getting Content in front of Your Audience.

4. WordPress for Beginners: Create a Website Step by Step

This might seem unconventional, but part of content marketing is knowing how to take advantage of all WordPress has to offer.

This is important for SEO as well as user experience.

The course covers posts vs. pages, the Content Editor, media files, categories and tags, content widgets, and more confusing little options you have.

It’s a basic course and best for beginners, but necessary if you have any questions about what WordPress can offer.

Coursera Courses

Coursera courses are on the rise.

The education platform partners with top universities and organizations worldwide and makes it easy for anyone to sign up (similarly to Udemy, except it’s a bit pricier and works with colleges and universities).

Coursera also has one of the largest libraries of classes in all different categories, so this is one of my favorite platforms.

5. Content Strategy for Professionals Specialization

There are four parts to this course: “Engaging Audiences,” “Managing Content,” “Expanding your Content’s Reach,” and “Ensuring your Content’s Impact.”

The course ends with a final capstone project where you use the knowledge you’ve gained in the prior four courses to design a content strategy package.

The course says that it is designed for entry-level, for-profit, non-profit, volunteer, and government enterprises, and it’s a great way to learn some of the basics of content marketing and how it can relate to a business strategy as a whole.

It’s a beginner-level course, and if you spend approximately two hours per week on the classes, you will finish in about four months.

The best part is it’s completely free, although you do have the option of getting a Verified Certificate from Northwestern University for completing the course for $49.00.

6. High-Impact Business Writing

This is the only course on the list that isn’t free, but it’s only $35 for eight hours of videos, readings, and quizzes, which is pretty inexpensive for a Coursera course from the University of California, Irvine.

This course is unique because it’s one of the few options that put a heavy focus on the actual act of writing as opposed to content marketing.

It teaches you how to write and communicate effectively in the business world.

Naturally, a lot of this is writing for an online audience and online publications (although it does get into writing business proposals, memos, etc.). If polishing up your writing skills is what you’re after, this single-course is a great option.

This course is part of a 10-course series called Career Success Specialization, which you can opt to take from the link above.

General Website Courses

If you keep an eye out, you’ll notice different agencies and businesses around the web oftentimes offer courses taught by their professionals. Below are two of my favorites:

7. HubSpot’s Inbound Certification

This course doesn’t focus on writing or content marketing specifically, but it’s worth mentioning if you’re interested in how those two areas help an online strategy as a whole.

You learn everything from creating landing pages, closing sales, and more.

HubSpot is one of the leading marketing resources on the web with some of the best content featured on their five blogs, so their course is no doubt top-notch.

Once you pass the course, you get a personalized badge and certificate that you can display on your website, email signature, LinkedIn profiles, etc.

8. Online Marketing Institute: Content Storytelling Rules for the Digital Marketer

Much like Skillshare, the Online Marketing Institute offers a free trial that allows you to try any courses you wish.

They have 70 different content marketing classes to choose from all sorted by Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced level.

The Content Storytelling class is pretty unique because it helps you understand storytelling fundamentals and how you can get creative so your content is more engaging.

Creativity is something that many businesses are lacking, so this is a cool course if you’re looking to step outside of your comfort zone.

Good content writers are in high demand, and we don’t see that changing any time soon.

It’s even possible to make a full-time income just through content writing if you take the time to learn the ins and out of the business.

The list above is a great starting point if you’re looking to expand your content writing skills, but it’s by no means an all-inclusive list.

Graduate Certificate in Digital Content Management (Online)

Curriculum overview

Emerson College’s graduate certificate in Digital Content Management trains students to develop impactful content and successfully deploy it across multiple platforms.

About the Digital Content Management Certificate Program

Housed in the Department of Writing, Literature and Publishing in the School of the Arts, this online certificate program consists of four courses, totaling 16 credit hours.

4 Required Courses

This course explores the role of metadata in the evolving information ecosystems within various publishing ecosystems. The course examines the use of specific metadata schemes within the book and digital publishing industries. Topics covered include: metadata models, ontologies, metadata generation and preservation, digital rights management, text analytics, and search optimization. Coursework will include creation of metadata in the common schemas (XML, Dublin Core, EAD, CDWA, VRA, ONIX) and projects designed to provide hands-on practice.

Fundamentals of Content Strategy

Content strategy is about developing content as a business asset, using it to achieve specific business goals. This course is designed to help students plan and execute an effective content strategy to build an audience. It will be conducted as a dynamic live project, where students will work alone and in groups to get experience in all the facets of content strategy. They will devise a strategy, set goals, create a project plan, and conduct basic research to test their assumptions. Students will create, publish, and propagate regular content to meet the needs of the audience they define. They will learn how to organize and optimize content for maximum impact, and how to set metrics, measure results, and iterate.

Electronic Publishing Overview

This class is an introduction to the main platforms and areas of online publishing. The class will provide hands-on experimentation with the main online publishing platforms and will give students an overview of key concepts such as web analytics, content strategy, and user interaction. The course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the planning, development, and management of a digital system. Students must have basic computer skills.

The fourth required class is an elective. Students may choose to take a rotating topics class on subjects such as XML, Project Management, and Usability/UX Design.

Successful completion of any of the following or equivalent undergraduate courses or industry experience in a reporting and analysis function are good examples of experience with relevant quantitative analysis concepts and techniques:

  • Algebra or math courses
  • Introductory statistics courses
  • Economics or econometrics courses
  • Research methods courses
  • Engineering courses

If students are unsure whether they qualify, they should seek approval from their graduate program director.

Learn more about the program, including application instructions, on the Digital Content Management certificate page.

Turn Your Certificate into a Master’s Degree

The Electronic Publishing Overview course counts as one of the core requirements for the MA in Publishing and Writing and will be offered every semester.

All other classes count as electives for the current MA program and are offered every other semester.

A Copywriter’s Guide to Accessibility

7 accessibility courses for copywriters, best practices for accessible copywriting, why copywriters should care about accessibility, simplify your path to accessible copy.

Stylized web browser with the silhouette of a woman holding a pencil over the screen and a man holding a pop-up box.

The best practices of good copywriting — precise language, clear value props, scannable content — all contribute to accessible copywriting. Learn how to make your content more accessible to the disabled community by following these best practices.

Think about the golden rules of copywriting: know your audience, use an active voice, keep things clear and concise, write headlines that pack a punch, and tell a clear story. These rules help you create strong copy that drives action.

You can also use the rules of good copywriting in accessibility. Keeping things clear and concise, using short sentences, using the correct headings and subheadings in order, and, most importantly, knowing your audience enables you to create good, accessible copy.

If you want to make your writing more accessible, numerous courses can help you learn best practices around accessible copywriting. We’ll review those courses in more detail below, as well as how these courses can benefit your career.

What Makes Website Copy Accessible?

Put simply, accessible copy is content that everyone can access and use — regardless of whether they have a disability or impairment. It includes the following aspects:

  • Video content

Think about it: the internet is made of these elements, yet they’re often overlooked in website accessibility. Without accessible content, much of the web would be inaccessible to people with disabilities. With 16% of the world’s population having some sort of disability , inaccessible content could keep a lot of people from using your digital content. You could also face potential legal consequences that could damage your brand reputation.

The best way to avoid these consequences is to ensure your website copy is accessible to all. The best place to get started is to educate yourself and put that knowledge into practice.

Whether new to accessibility or not, expanding your skills and knowledge in the accessibility industry is always beneficial. Below, we’ve compiled a list of available courses for accessibility copywriting.

1. Writing Accessible Content for the Web

Provided by A11y Collective , this course is designed for content strategists, creators, marketers, and web content managers. The course covers the various ways individuals with disabilities read and the difficulties they face in understanding text. It also covers how you can overcome those problems by reviewing top guidelines for accessible content. You’ll complete exercises and assignments to put what you’ve learned into practice.

  • Duration: 4-8 hours
  • Price: $110
  • Assessment: None

2. Certificate in Accessible Content

Earning a Certificate in Accessible Content is a quick and easy way to learn how to meet accessibility standards outlined in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) . The course includes five stand-alone classes that provide generic accessibility training for copywriters and strategists, such as:

  • Using a web editor: Learn how to use a CMS or web editing tool to improve accessibility.
  • Using keywords: In addition to getting tips on accessible metadata, the class also instructs writers on how to use keywords strategically.
  • Writing for WCAG 2.2 standards: Gain an understanding of WCAG accessibility standards and what your responsibility as a writer is.
  • Making accessible PDFs: Accessibility also extends to electronic documents, such as PDFs. This class provides instructions on how to make them accessible.
  • Using images and graphs online: Learn how to make every image and graph accessible, a requirement for WCAG 2.2 and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act compliance.

There is no prerequisite for this course; it can be completed on your schedule.

  • Duration: 5 hours
  • Price: $135
  • Assessment: 5 online tests to be completed after each class

3. W3C Digital Accessibility Foundations

The World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Digital Accessibility Foundations course is designed for technical and non-technical learners. This includes developers, designers, content authors, students, professionals, and people with disabilities. The unique thing about this course is that you can choose your path. For example, as a content writer, you can focus your learning on writing for accessibility. We recommend also completing the ‘Advocating’ course as it provides an understanding of real-life experiences and how accessibility is essential for some and useful for all.

  • Duration: 16-20 hours
  • Price: Free
  • Assessment: None. Can choose to get a verified certificate for an additional $99

4. Advanced Web Accessibility Training for Content Writers

Eleven Ways’ Advanced Web Accessibility Training for Content Writers provides an overview of digital accessibility and how you can contribute to the accessibility of web pages, documents, mobile apps, podcasts, and more. The course includes information on accessibility legislation, standards, and accessible content best practices. A series of four accessibility symbols fading into the distance, against a rainbow gradient background.

As you’re getting started with the accessibility courses above, here are a few best practices you should implement now to increase the accessibility of your content.

  • Use plain language: Plain, simple language makes your content more accessible to everyone, not just those with disabilities. This doesn’t mean your content must be boring, but you should avoid using jargon, idioms, and terminology your audience doesn’t understand. WCAG’s Success Criteria 3.1.5 on Reading Level provides helpful recommendations on how to best use plain, simple language.
  • Add structure: Use headers, subheaders, and bullet points to ensure your content can be scanned. Don’t be afraid of white space, either.
  • Include alternative text for images: Even if you’re not the one creating images for digital content, be sure to include alt text for all images. This ensures that users relying on assistive technologies don’t miss important context.
  • Use descriptive CTAs and anchor text: Users should know exactly what will happen when they click a CTA button or anchor text. Writing descriptive anchor text and buttons is the best way to do this.
  • Provide clear instructions where appropriate: Include clear, specific instructions to ensure that all users know how to use your digital content (forms especially). Also, remember to include error messages and how to resolve them.
  • Make mindful choices for font and text colors: Font and text colors greatly affect accessibility. For example, individuals with visual impairments may not be able to see a particular text color against a white background, or users with dyslexia might struggle to read specific fonts. Keep these in mind throughout your writing process.

As we mentioned above, the web comprises various types of content. If it’s not accessible, it prevents a considerable portion of the disability community from accessing and using the web. As a copywriter, you should strive to make your copy as accessible as possible so you don’t inadvertently exclude users from accessing digital content. This ultimately results in a more accessible, inclusive experience for all users, particularly those with disabilities.

Additionally, creating accessible copy can help you comply with the accessibility standards included in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA enforces the technical specifications included in WCAG, which includes several specifications for accessible content. This includes using clear, concise language and formatting content in a way that’s easy to follow and understand. Following these guidelines can help your organization avoid accessibility lawsuits that can have pretty severe consequences.

Finally, accessible content can help your website perform better overall. The correct use of headings, clear, simple language, descriptive hyperlinks, and alt text provides both users and SEO crawlers with a clearer understanding of your digital content. Additionally, accessible content improves overall readability, making it easier for users to find what they’r. This can help improve your overall website ranking, which can extend the reach of your audience.

Learning how to create accessible copy can feel overwhelming, and rightly so. There’s much to remember, especially when considering WCAG’s specifications. The courses above are a great starting point for incorporating accessibility into your writing or content strategy. However, it’s critical to test your content for accessibility before it gets into the hands of your customers.

Photo-illustration of a mini AI bot looking at a laptop atop a stock of books, sitting next to human hands on a laptop.

Generative AI is transforming the software development industry. AI-powered coding tools are assisting programmers in their workflows, while jobs in AI continue to increase. But the shift is also evident in academia—one of the major avenues through which the next generation of software engineers learn how to code.

Computer science students are embracing the technology, using generative AI to help them understand complex concepts, summarize complicated research papers, brainstorm ways to solve a problem, come up with new research directions, and, of course, learn how to code.

“Students are early adopters and have been actively testing these tools,” says Johnny Chang , a teaching assistant at Stanford University pursuing a master’s degree in computer science. He also founded the AI x Education conference in 2023, a virtual gathering of students and educators to discuss the impact of AI on education.

So as not to be left behind, educators are also experimenting with generative AI. But they’re grappling with techniques to adopt the technology while still ensuring students learn the foundations of computer science.

“It’s a difficult balancing act,” says Ooi Wei Tsang , an associate professor in the School of Computing at the National University of Singapore . “Given that large language models are evolving rapidly, we are still learning how to do this.”

Less Emphasis on Syntax, More on Problem Solving

The fundamentals and skills themselves are evolving. Most introductory computer science courses focus on code syntax and getting programs to run, and while knowing how to read and write code is still essential, testing and debugging—which aren’t commonly part of the syllabus—now need to be taught more explicitly.

“We’re seeing a little upping of that skill, where students are getting code snippets from generative AI that they need to test for correctness,” says Jeanna Matthews , a professor of computer science at Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y.

Another vital expertise is problem decomposition. “This is a skill to know early on because you need to break a large problem into smaller pieces that an LLM can solve,” says Leo Porter , an associate teaching professor of computer science at the University of California, San Diego . “It’s hard to find where in the curriculum that’s taught—maybe in an algorithms or software engineering class, but those are advanced classes. Now, it becomes a priority in introductory classes.”

“Given that large language models are evolving rapidly, we are still learning how to do this.” —Ooi Wei Tsang, National University of Singapore

As a result, educators are modifying their teaching strategies. “I used to have this singular focus on students writing code that they submit, and then I run test cases on the code to determine what their grade is,” says Daniel Zingaro , an associate professor of computer science at the University of Toronto Mississauga . “This is such a narrow view of what it means to be a software engineer, and I just felt that with generative AI, I’ve managed to overcome that restrictive view.”

Zingaro, who coauthored a book on AI-assisted Python programming with Porter, now has his students work in groups and submit a video explaining how their code works. Through these walk-throughs, he gets a sense of how students use AI to generate code, what they struggle with, and how they approach design, testing, and teamwork.

“It’s an opportunity for me to assess their learning process of the whole software development [life cycle]—not just code,” Zingaro says. “And I feel like my courses have opened up more and they’re much broader than they used to be. I can make students work on larger and more advanced projects.”

Ooi echoes that sentiment, noting that generative AI tools “will free up time for us to teach higher-level thinking—for example, how to design software, what is the right problem to solve, and what are the solutions. Students can spend more time on optimization, ethical issues, and the user-friendliness of a system rather than focusing on the syntax of the code.”

Avoiding AI’s Coding Pitfalls

But educators are cautious given an LLM’s tendency to hallucinate . “We need to be teaching students to be skeptical of the results and take ownership of verifying and validating them,” says Matthews.

Matthews adds that generative AI “can short-circuit the learning process of students relying on it too much.” Chang agrees that this overreliance can be a pitfall and advises his fellow students to explore possible solutions to problems by themselves so they don’t lose out on that critical thinking or effective learning process. “We should be making AI a copilot—not the autopilot—for learning,” he says.

“We should be making AI a copilot—not the autopilot—for learning.” —Johnny Chang, Stanford University

Other drawbacks include copyright and bias. “I teach my students about the ethical constraints—that this is a model built off other people’s code and we’d recognize the ownership of that,” Porter says. “We also have to recognize that models are going to represent the bias that’s already in society.”

Adapting to the rise of generative AI involves students and educators working together and learning from each other. For her colleagues, Matthews’s advice is to “try to foster an environment where you encourage students to tell you when and how they’re using these tools. Ultimately, we are preparing our students for the real world, and the real world is shifting, so sticking with what you’ve always done may not be the recipe that best serves students in this transition.”

Porter is optimistic that the changes they’re applying now will serve students well in the future. “There’s this long history of a gap between what we teach in academia and what’s actually needed as skills when students arrive in the industry,” he says. “There’s hope on my part that we might help close the gap if we embrace LLMs.”

Yes! Great summary of how things are evolving with AI. I’m a retired coder (BS comp sci) and understand the fundamentals of developing systems. Learning the lastest systems is now the greatest challenge. I was intrigued by Ansible to help me manage my homelab cluster, but who wants to learn one more scripting language? Turns out ChatGPT4 knows the syntax, semantics, and work flow of Ansible and all I do is tell is to “install log2ram on all my proxmox servers” and I get a playbook that does just that. The same with Docker Compose scripts. Wow.

News Release

US Department of Labor awards $696K to continue employment, training services for coastal communities in 6 counties affected by layoffs in Maine

WASHINGTON – The Department of Labor today announced an incremental award of $696,085 to Coastal Counties Workforce Inc. to continue employment and training services for dislocated workers affected by layoffs in Cumberland, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Waldo and York counties.

In  February 2022 , the department announced the award of a  National Dislocated Worker Grant of up to $2,296,085 – with an initial award of $800,000 – to enable Coastal Counties Workforce Inc. to provide services for people in Maine’s coastal region. A second incremental award of $800,000, announced in  July 2023 , supported employment and training services after more workers in the region suffered layoffs.

The award announced today follows layoffs at 54 employers, affecting more than 1,100 additional workers  since April 2023.   National Dislocated Worker Grants are supported by the  Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 to provide a state or local board with funding for direct services and assistance in areas experiencing a major economic dislocation event, such as layoffs that lead to workforce needs exceeding available resources.

Administered by the department’s  Employment and Training Administration , this latest funding will support continued job search assistance and follow-up services for participants affected by communitywide layoffs in Maine’s coastal communities. With today’s announcement, the total awarded for the project is the full $2,296,085.
